1 CBCS holds inaugural landing zone safety certification course
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Hunter Rhoden, 86th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controller, peers through a lensatic compass while setting up landing zone marking panels at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Feb. 13. A combined team of air traffic controllers, airfield operations officers, radar airfield weather systems technicians and airfield managers earned their landing zone safety officer certification on Feb. 11-15. This special experience identifier allows them to perform the LZSO function in all environments.
Imagine trading out a nice, cozy workspace with heating, air conditioning, a break room and even one of those comfy office chairs for a windy, rainy and cold environment. Oh yeah, take away daylight as well. For a few members of the airfield operations career fields, that’s exactly what they did.

DAF members recognized during BEYA STEM awards
by Staff Sgt. Adam R. Shanks Secretary of the Air Force Public AffairsTwo Department of the Air Force members received awards during the 2024 Black Engineer of the Year Awards, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics conference held at the Baltimore Convention Center, Maryland, Feb. 15-17.
At the 19th Annual Stars and Stripes Dinner Feb. 16, an Air Force Airman and a Space Force Guardian were recognized for their accomplishments in STEM-related fields over the past year.
Department of the Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall explained how STEM fields are vital in Great Power Competition and how leveraging diverse talents plays an integral part in national defense.
“The Air and Space Force rely on the best leaders and technical experts in the world,” Kendall said. “They perform our mission and keep America secure from growing threats. I’m grateful for everything the STEM community does to advance that mission. The DAF has the best talent our country has to offer.”
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin joined distinguished guests onstage to introduce Lt. Col. Shari Perkins, the Air Force’s annual award winner. A prior enlisted Airman, Perkins holds multiple advanced degrees and now serves in the DAF’s executive action group. Additionally, Perkins led projects that yielded more than $25,000 in
funding for 40 STEM-related scholarships for youth.
“I can tell you from personal observation, her work ethic is as strong as her personality,” Allvin said. “In 2023, she took the reins and shepherded the development of the Air Force’s diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility strategic plan, ensuring that we had purposeful approaches to recruiting, outreach and retention.”
U.S. Space Force Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. Michael Guetlein took the stage to introduce the Space Force’s annual award winner, Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton. Middleton, a career missile officer, who currently serves as the deputy director for operations at the National Military Command Center in Washington, D.C.
“[Middleton] embodies honor, courage and commitment,” Guetlein said. “He’s highly regarded in the Air and Space Force, having received the National Reconnaissance Office gold medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal … I could not be more thrilled that you’re honoring this battle-tested warrior.”
The BEYA STEM conference is a three-day event held annually for more than three decades, focusing on minorities with professional interests in STEM fields. It offers high school and college students; as well as corporate, government and military professionals; an opportunity to come together to participate in networking, mentorship sessions, learning opportunities and recognition ceremonies.
MASTHEAD
A combined team of air traffic controllers, airfield operations officers, radar airfield weather systems technicians and airfield managers made the trip to Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, to earn their landing zone safety officer certification on Feb. 11-15.
“We are getting our AFSOC validation for landing zone operations in order for us to certify and award the special experience identifier,” said Senior Master Sgt. Bruce Zaragoza, 1st Combat Communications Squadron contingency airfield operations flight chief. “The course that we have is specifically tailored to contingency response of mobility units and airfield operations career fields.”
The SEI allows certified members to perform the LZSO function in all environments.
“As we continue to move forward in terms of agile combat employment and multi-capable Airmen, having individuals that have these special skillsets allows the theater commanders and combatant commanders to have the capabilities to move forward especially when we talk about possible austere operations in theater,” Zaragoza said. “It allows the flexibility for not only the mobility units but also the other units at main operation bases to participate in, or expand that capability.”
One does not simply get in contact with an aircraft and then tell it where to land. There is much more to it than that. Landing and launching aircraft is only a small portion of the course syllabus.
“During the first week of instruction, it’s four days straight of going over the basics of what it is to be an LZSO, the type of different criteria they will be looking for when evaluating surface conditions and aircraft characteristics. All the things that play into the function of what LZSO responsibilities are,”
Zaragoza said. “As we transition through the second week, we are focusing more on operations. So, we are assessing an airfield, making sure everything on the survey is good to go and from that point we’re also working operations for the aircraft that we are going to be receiving.”
Using the crawl, walk, run method, the students transition to an austere location to experience the scenario hands on.
“The next thing is setting up the LZ,” Zaragoza said. “In order for an aircraft to identify the landing zone and be able to land there they have to find it, so we set up airfield marking panels. We give them a target for a touchdown zone.”
Positive results of the training were noticeable after just a few days.
“We all came in day one and took a pretest to kind of see where our knowledge was at,” said Staff Sgt. Hunter Rhoden, 86th Operations Support Squadron watch supervisor. “To see how much the class has grown as a whole is insane. We came in literally knowing nothing about setting up LZs and now we can come out here by ourselves and do everything.”
The students took turns communicating with the aircraft and local air traffic control tower, successfully landing and departing the aircraft. This course gives opportunities for students to work outside of their comfort zone as well as giving the pilots opportunities to meet some of their training requirements.
“I’m a tower-only air traffic controller. I usually sit in a climatecontrolled glass bubble and clear planes for takeoff and clear them for landing. This is a lot different,” Rhoden said. “You come out here with just your equipment and set up. You’re out in the elements.”
Aside from the experience of controlling aircraft in unfavorable conditions, the benefits of this
course carry a lot of weight for the United States Air Forces in Europe.
“LZs are important because it’s the future of warfare,” Rhoden said. “We aren’t always going to have a perfect airfield to land on so we might have to go somewhere an airfield isn’t set up to land aircraft, to get people in and out. So it’s very advantageous for us to have this capability in the air force.”
Developing teamwork and communication skills plays a vital role in the course. Operations in austere locations, with degraded capabilities will present great challenges which will only be overcome by using these skills.
“I’ve taken a lot of things out of this class and teamwork is a huge one,” Rhoden said. “Teamwork in any environment is huge. Being out here with a small group of people we have to communicate very well, so a lot of communication skills have been gained from this.”
U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sarah Zaragoza, 603rd Air Operations Center airspace manager, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Caz Cusick, 1st Combat Communications Squadron radio and weather systems supervisor, measure the distance between landing zone marking panels at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Feb. 13. A combined team of air traffic controllers, airfield operations officers, radar airfield weather systems technicians and airfield managers earned their landing zone safety officer certification on Feb. 11-15. This special experience identifier allows them to perform the LZSO function in all environments.

USAFE-AFAFRICA commander discusses Integrated Air and Missile Defense during Munich Security Conference
by Capt. Michael Hardy U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Public AffairsU.S. Air Force Gen. James B. Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command, discussed one of his focus areas, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, during a panel at the Munich Security Conference, Feb. 17.
Held every year, the Munich Security Conference is one of the largest security conferences in the world with international leaders, senior military officials and industry representatives discussing international security policy and providing a venue to address pressing security concerns around the globe.
Hecker participated in a panel on Future Missile Defense with German Air Force Gen. Christian Nikolaus Badia, NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, and the honorable Thomas Hitschler, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany.
Integrated Air and Missile Defense stands as one of Gen. Hecker’s top priorities, aiming to enhance U.S. and NATO capabilities for providing a comprehensive 360-degree protection of assets and locations to secure air superiority.
“If you look back over the last 30 years, we’re used to having air
superiority,” said Hecker during his opening remarks. “We could fly wherever we wanted to fly and drop our bombs where we wanted and not have the fear of being shot down by an air and missile defense system on the ground.”
Hecker explained maintaining air superiority through integrated air and missile defense is vital today, but that our edge is not a guarantee.
“We can’t do it the way we done it in the past,” he said.
Hecker highlighted challenges U.S. and NATO Allies face today with the proliferation of technology such as one-way unmanned aerial aircraft systems, which typically fly too low for ground-based radars to detect, and the cost of using current, exquisite IAMD systems. Adding that the keys to future suc-
cess include strong relationships and interoperability across the NATO Alliance.
Hecker praised NATO Allies for their work in areas such as starting the European Sky Shield initiative and developing innovative, low-cost acoustic detection systems that the Ukrainian military has employed to detect and intercept low flying threats.
In his panel comments, Hecker also stressed the importance of developing a mixture of high-cost capabilities and low-cost capabilities as NATO looks to upgrade IAMD systems throughout the Alliance.
“Some countries can help with the expensive stuff and some help with the low-cost stuff, then all of us can come together and have a layered defense,” Hecker said.
RAF, USAF strengthen ability to communicate across the world
by Royal Air Force NewsRoyal Air Force Tactical Communicators have joined their U.S. Air Force counterparts in Germany to hone their skills using high frequency communications. The training culminated with a combined U.K./U.S. team establishing a high frequency link with Guam, more than 11,500 km away in the Western Pacific.
“It is essential that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our allies in NATO as the alliance turns 75. This opportunity to train with our U.S. partners allows us to leverage our combined strengths, enhancing our shared tactics and strong relationships while honing technical skills in HF. This is only one small element of our work delivering on the Combined Vision Statement for Agile Combat Employment.”
Wing Commander Maisey Officer Commanding of the RAF’s Tactical Communications Wing
High frequency communications are a key part of Agile Combat Employment or ACE — the ability to avoid or mitigate attacks from an adversary, by dispersing air assets across a variety of austere locations and continuing to operate effectively with minimal support. Although HF is not new in itself, when combined with modern technology it offers an extremely effective way to communicate globally without having to rely on satellites or data cables under the ground or sea.
“The best part about this partnership is that it is not just a ‘one-off’ training opportunity. The longstanding trust and partnership that we have with our RAF counterparts will outlive Ben Maisey and me. As we celebrate the combined accomplishments of the past and present, I am even more excited for the future.”
Lieutenant Colonel Brown
The Cyberspace Communications Specialists, currently serving on Tactical Communications Wing within 90 Signals Unit at RAF Leeming, attended the Advanced High Frequency Communications Course at Ramstein Air Base. Hosted by the USAF’s 1st Combat Communications Squadron, known as 1 CBCS, they exchanged knowledge, skills and an understanding of both units’ equipment.
In September the RAF and USAF signed a Combined Vision Statement on Agile Combat Employment to commit to a new strategic approach to the employment of aircraft and
enabling functions such as communications. One of its key objectives is to replace unique systems with interoperable ones — systems that can work together and when appropriate be operated by members of either air force.
On the final day of training, led
by high frequency experts from the 1 CBCS, the U.K. and U.S. signallers collaborated to establish a communications link with 644 CBCS 11500 km away in Guam. This cooperation reinforced both air forces’ capabilities to work together and operate each other’s equipment.

21st TSC warrant officers gain skills to implement US Army’s data centricity, zero trust plan
by Sgt. 1st Class Terysa King 21st Theater Sustainment CommandSignal warrant officers from the European theater gathered in Ramstein for the first 21st Theater Sustainment Command-led signal warrant officer professional development session from Feb. 12-13.
The WOPD’s focus was to explore methods to implement the U.S. Army’s newest data centricity and zero trust plan slated to be in effect by 2027.
More than 20 signal warrant officers and contractors from 21st TSC, UR-AF, U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command, 3rd Infantry Division and 2nd Theater Signal Brigade met to discuss what warrant officers do best: Provide technical expertise.
Col. Ernest Lane, 21st TSC chief of staff, said in opening remarks that warrant officers are champions of innovation, and the U.S. Army thrives on forward thinking and solutions.
“A lot of solutions are going to come out of this room from the people who are sitting in these seats,” said Lane. “That’s what warrant officers do. They’re out there, hunting for the next solution. They’re looking for the next problem to be able to solve. I see warrant officers as the type of leaders that look to solve their boss’ boss’ problems.”
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Randy Nkoulou, 21st TSC data operations warrant officer, and the WOPD’s lead planner, said it took about four months to plan this event.
Nkoulou said the forum will help the 21st TSC and other units modernize how each organization uses data.
“Mentorship and retention are dear to my heart,” said Nkoulou. “I want them to know that they are technical experts. This setting shows warrant officers there are solutions out there to get to where we want to go, which is being modern, being flexible, and having data for all the users to use.”
The two-day event included guest speakers from Optiv + ClearShark, NetApp, Varonis, Splunk, Hewlett Packard
Enterprise, Aruba Networks, and U.S. Army Signal Activity Kaiserslautern who shared best practices on how to recognize, transfer, store, shape, and manipulate data.
To help push the 21st TSC into the new century, Nkoulou said this forum will show how signal warrant officers can modernize sustainment operations to use new data driven technology.
“Sustainment has a lot of data,” said Nkoulou. “Before, we were focused on setting up the network and setting up applications for user. Now we have to
“It’s nice to see what my fellow warrant officers are doing, and some of the free programs and software that they recommend using so I can learn more in depth about what my job is now that I’m in data analysis.”
More seasoned signal warrant officers, like Chief Warrant Officer
4 Jason Horton, the senior technical advisor to the 2nd TSB, said events like this WOPD are important for the signal warrant officer corps to sharpen their skills.
“Being a communications warrant officer is one of the most difficult crafts to have,” said Horton. “Technology changes every day. Having these types of forums helps us stay aligned with the industry, and seeing how they’re resolving problems enables us to integrate them in the military community.”
say the most important thing the user needs is the data. We have to show the data to the boss, that data has to make sense, and we give the boss the ability to make decisions.”
Warrant Officer Chantal Tavitian, a systems technician warrant officer with the 1st Theater Personnel Operations Center, said she got a lot out of the WOPD as a newer warrant officer in the signal corps, and plans to incorporate what she learned into her daily duties.
“It comes down to networking and collaboration,” said Tavitian.
Horton said this WOPD helped signal warrant officers get an understanding of common problem sets, and how the industry is engaging these problems. By providing engineers the opportunity to network and communicate technical problems, Nkoulou said it drives home the point that signal warrant officers need to provide solutions to their home units to solve data centric problems.
“It requires signal warrant officers to shift their perception on how they are going to conduct business,” said Nkoulou. “We have to be trained to find solutions to put that data at the forefront of operations rather than what we’ve been normally doing.”
WWI doc blazes trail for black hospital, EMS community
by Katie Lange Department of Defense NewsThroughout American history, Black service members have forged new paths for future generations, despite the prejudices they may have encountered. One such trailblazer was Dr. Frank Erdman Boston, who reached the rank of major during World War I. He went on to become one of the first Black men to start both a hospital and an ambulance corps, which are still in business today.
From the start, Boston’s life seemed pretty remarkable. He was born on March 10, 1890, in Philadelphia and was one of four children born to a hairdresser and a Civil War veteran-turned-barber shop owner. Boston and his older brother, Samuel, both became doctors.
According to George Whitehair, the executive director of the Boston Legacy Foundation that preserves the doctor’s history, Boston’s mother was part French and Native American, so she taught him the healing powers of herbs and natural remedies at a young age. Throughout high school and college, he worked at a drug store.
Excelling in times of war
Boston went to Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University. He then studied at the Medico-Chirurgical College, graduating in 1915 with a degree in pharmacy and medicine just a year before the medical school merged with the University of Pennsylvania.
Boston then went to work for Mercy Hospital, one of two Black-run hospitals in Philadelphia. According to Whitehair, he also had a solo medical practice and was teaching firstaid classes for nurses when he enlisted in the Army Medical Reserve Corps in 1917. He was immediately given the rank of first lieutenant and sent to Fort Des Moines, Iowa, the Army’s only training camp for Black officers.
By June 1918, Boston was sent to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. He was a medical officer with the 317th Engineers Regiment that was part of the segregated 92nd Infantry Division, nicknamed the Buffalo Soldier Division in honor of Black troops who served in the 19th century. Boston, a captain at the time, was a doctor and field surgeon who treated soldiers while under aerial and gas attack. The soldiers fought in the bloody Meuse-Argonne Campaign, the war’s most deadly battle that raged until the armistice was signed on Nov. 11, 1918.
By the end of his military service, Boston had attained the rank of major, which few Black men of
that time achieved, Whitehair said. Boston was also a known associate of famed scholar and NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois. Boston wrote letters about his wartime experiences to Du Bois, who had been instrumental in encouraging Fort Des Moines to be established for Black officers.
Boston returned to Philadelphia after the war and continued his civilian career as a doctor, but he continued working with the military, too, running a free clinic for U.S. and British war veterans, according to the National Museum of Health and Medicine. In 1924, he became the first commander of the city’s Lt. William G. Junken VFW Post.
A groundbreaking venture
By 1931, Boston had moved to the suburb of Lansdale after a fishing buddy recommended it, Whitehair said. Two years later, he formed an ambulance corps called the First Aide Emergency Squad, which provided first aid and emergency training. The corps worked like current-day emergency medical services but came along about 40 years before EMS became an actual profession.
Those who worked for the corps wore uniforms and trained like a military unit. During World War I, medical technologies such as mobile X-ray machines and motorized ambulances were used for the first time, which may have contributed to Boston’s intertest in starting the corps, Whitehair said.
It turned into a very successful venture. Boston and his corps teammates were credited with saving hundreds of lives during March 1936 storms that wreaked havoc across Pennsylvania, flooding rivers and leading to a major disaster in the town of Lock Haven, where the corps was in charge of rescue work.
“Hundreds of civilians were saved due to the efforts of Dr. Boston and his corps,” Whitehair said.
In 1934, Boston also opened the 23-bed Elm Terrace Hospital and eventually became its head surgeon.
The Boston Legacy Foundation says he is one of the first Black men to start both a hospital and an ambulance corps, and they’re still around today. The hospital is now known as Jefferson Lansdale Hospital, and the ambulance service is known as the Lansdale Volunteer Medical Services Corps.
According to Whitehair, Boston also started a service akin to Meals on Wheels well before that service became established in America.
“Dr. Boston may be one of the first in food delivery as he would secretly deliver meals to people in the area who were struggling, especially coming out of the Great Depression and the war,” Whitehair said. “Boston would make house calls and he would take baskets of food and deliver it to people who had no money, and [he] never asked for thanks or recognition.”
Spreading kindness and compassion
Boston’s accolades were abundant. He worked with the Boy Scouts and was a member of various medical associations, including as one of the first Black members of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S., of which he became a life member in 1959 after 30 years of membership. Boston was the recipient of two U.S. Presidential Citations — one from President Harry S. Truman and another from President Dwight D. Eisenhower — for his work in the community.
Boston never married, but he did have a life partner, Mabel Reed, who worked with him throughout his practice and was his partner in running the ambulance corps, Whitehair said.
“Mabel managed the [ambulance corps], which was unheard of in the 40s and 50s,” Whitehair said, highlighting Boston’s forward thinking.
In 1959, Boston sold the hospital but remained its chief of surgery. That same year, he was diagnosed with cancer. He died on Feb. 8, 1960, and was buried in White Marsh Cemetery in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 7: Scotland’s Castle Trail
We are nearing the end of my trip and heading for a less famous part of Scotland: the east. I had initially planned on seeing the wild north but my decision to explore the east coast instead was made in the hope of better weather. I had spent weeks in pouring rain and didn’t mind it at all but with fall approaching fast, I felt I needed to get some sunshine in before the days got shorter again. To my own surprise, I ended up absolutely loving the east with its cozy fishing villages, glorious castles and flower gardens.
At the beginning of my trip, back in England, I purchased a year-long National Trust membership for £26, which includes admission to hundreds of sites in England and Scotland, where it’s called National Trust for Scotland. Most of the castles, historic mansions and gardens in the east are owned by NT as private families often struggle with keeping the estates in good shape and gift
them to NT to be maintained and enjoyed by the public. Some days I visited up to 3 castles in a row, saving around £10-12 admission per attraction. Spending more than a week doing virtually nothing but visiting flower garden after flower garden and wandering the halls of ancient castles provided me with insight into the country’s history of clans, wars, splendor and etiquette that you can read about but never really grasp until it is laid out in front of you in the form of a set dinner table, a nursery, narrow stairs leading to shabby staff quarters, etc. You’d think you get tired of these beautiful sights after a while but let me tell you: some things never get old. Unfortunately you’re not allowed to take photos of the interiors so I suppose you’ll just have to see them yourself.
Drummond Gardens
The following sights are sorted geographically, starting in Edinburgh and heading north along the coast towards Inverness. I strongly recommend driving through the Cairngorms on your way back to Edinburgh as it is a magnificent drive through different sceneries. Keep in mind that there are roughly 300 castles, stately
homes and ruins in Aberdeenshire alone so one can’t write about them all, let alone visit them all. For more inspiration, visit the official website on The Castle Trail.
Edinburgh
I suggest starting your trip in Edinburgh as it has the most affordable direct flights from Frankfurt and co. Plan at least a day here just because it’s a beautiful piece of both culture and history with lovely architecture, great restaurants and plenty to do and see. Check out our post on 6 thing to do in Edinburgh if you need some inspiration.
St. Andrews
This charming university town is famous because St. Andrew’s is not only the oldest university in the country but also happens to be the place Prince William, future king of England, met Kate (née Middleton), who later provided the other future king of England. While there’s not too much to do there, it’s worth stopping by and taking a look around.
Glamis Castle
Sometimes referred to as Scotland’s Most Beautiful Castle
(who even gets to decide that?), Glamis is the childhood home of The Queen Mother and boasts almost 1,000 years of history. It further provided inspiration for Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which is commemorated with a wooden sculpture forest leading to a gorgeous walled flower garden. Admission costs £15.50 and unfortunately isn’t owned by NT so everyone has to pay.
Kirriemuir
The birthplace of the great J. M. Barrie is most famous for its Peter Pan statues and the playwright’s childhood home as well as his final resting place including what might be the prettiest tombstone I have ever seen. It is only a short walk up a hill that takes you to an adventure playground for children and the adjacent cemetery (interesting combination, I know). I stayed in a lovely B&B a few miles out and my host not only gave me a private tour of the town but also gave me a copy of Barrie’s A Window in Thrums, which is said to be inspired by Kirriemuir. I definitely recommend staying here and having a cup of tea in the summer house overlooking their garden (the East is pretty much all gar-
dens, deal with it) and the endless fields surrounding the property. Pure serenity. Admission to the birthplace museum costs £7.00 if you’re not a NT member.
Drum Castle
Drum Castle is a mixture of eras as the tower house dates back to 1323, the chapel to the 1500s, the oak forest to the 1700s, the main mansion to the Jacobean era and finally a lower hall from the Victorian era, which was later converted into a library containing 4,000 books. The rose garden is split into quarters showing the different cultivations of roses between the 17th and 20th century.
Aberdeen Aberdeen ended up quite surprising me with its beauty. The Maritime Museum is a multi-story, award-winning museum on everything ocean related. Admission is free so it’s definitely a must-visit. A number of cute cafés and restaurants as well as good shopping opportunities await here as well. To no one’s surprise, my favorite café was Bonobo Café because they have a little rooftop terrace with lots of green and an in-house cat. Dogs welcome!
Crathes Castle
Painted ceilings, oak panels and more during a self-guided tour through this classic 16th century tower house but it’s the outdoor premises that really takes the cake. The walled garden has lots of opportunities to sit and take in the scent, views and lack of noises. 6 marked trails of different lengths lead through a beautiful forest and along a river whose water appears dirty at first until you find out it’s actually the color of tea (gotta love a euphemism). Admission costs £13.00 for non-members.
Craigievar Castle
Some say the pink tower castle inspired Disney’s Cinderella Castle, others are adamant about Neuschwanstein being the true inspiration but I have been to both now and let me tell you: it doesn’t matter. There is no artificial lightning above the ground floor because its original owners only handed it to NT under the condition that it would not be changed. This means stopping by on a grey day isn’t advisable but makes it all the more special on a sunny day as the historical artefacts and rooms look exactly the way they would have hundreds of years ago. It dates back
to 1576 and the exterior remains virtually unchanged since 1626. The interior can only be viewed via guided tour but you’ll be thankful for all the background info it provides you with. What would nowadays be referred to as a rooftop terrace offers a lovely view of the surrounding hills. Admission costs £13.00 if you’re not a member.
Pitmedden Garden
This beautifully designed garden dating back to 1675 really lives off sunshine so try to see it on a sunny day. There’s also a Museum of Farming Life, which highlights the agricultural past of the area. The café invites you to sit outside and enjoy a hot soup or cup of coffee with this stunning view. Their annual ‘cornkisters’ event in September lets you purchase fruit and vegetables grown right here in the garden. Admission costs £8.00 if you’re not a member.
New Slains Castle
Sometimes referred to as Dracula Castle because Bram Stoker stayed here in 1859 and people rumor that it inspired the famous novel. Inspiration or not, it should not be missing on your itinerary. Walking through the ruins
and imagining what it once looked like/ what secrets its walls keep is a great way to spend your afternoon. The view from the tower (which includes no security measures whatsoever and should therefore not be climbed if you’re scared of heights) is absolutely breathtaking but just picturing yourself having breakfast overlooking the North Sea and these gorgeous cliffs is enough to make you understand why it’s so famous. Parking and admission are free because frankly there’s neither an official parking lot nor a specific entrance point.
Newburgh Seal Beach
My friend likes to tell me I look like a seal so I wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to hang with my family and don’t let this blurry photo (or any photos of me for that matter) fool you- it’s a lovely sight. Take a walk on the white beach and watch the seals enjoy the sunshine or perform their little choreographies in the water: it’s truly mesmerizing and there’s free parking on the premises.
Fyvie Castle
Fyvie Castle may have been my favorite of them all; its eerie ghost stories and magnificent art as well
as the large green hill it’s throning on are a sight for sore eyes. Bonus: the tour guide was very cute, just saying. Nonetheless it was the walled flower garden that truly blew me away. These colourful Dalias were accompanied by fruit trees, herbs and all other kinds of happiness inviting you to sit in the sunshine with a book and revel in nature’s glories.
Leith Hall, Haddo House and Brodie Castle
Leith Hall, Haddo House and Brodie Castle are three more wonderful sites run by National Trust that I visited on my trip. You guessed it, they all have flower gardens, cute cafés and picturesque interiors. All three are north of Fyvie on your way to Inverness. If you don’t want your trip to end just yet, you can drive even further north than Inverness and see the famous Dunrobin Castle right on the coast. Admission costs £12.00, it’s not owned by NT. Admission to the garden is free.
Cairngorms National Park Mountains, Lochs, wildlife and more await on your drive back south through Cairngorms National Park. If you’re not actu-
ally interested in castles but prefer spending your days outside cycling, hiking, wild water rafting, etc., this might be the perfect destination for you. Whether you’re just passing through or staying for a while, definitely stop by the Mountain Café in Aviemore. They bake all their own cakes and make delicious soups, sandwiches and daily specials. The Scones with homemade jam and clotted cream are absolute heaven.
While driving through Cairngorms you can also visit one last castle, Blair Castle, which dates back to 1269 and has huge grounds with (fenced in) deer, the UK’s second largest tree, a picturesque walled garden and much more.
Where to stay
Check out Airbnb and booking. com for cute B&Bs and cottages along the road. I stayed at The Sail Loft Bunkhouse in the small village of Portsoy, which was right on the beach, impeccably clean and had a well-equipped kitchen as well as an outdoor seating area overlooking the ocean. They also have a wooden hot tub in their little garden. Perhaps the best hostel I stayed at during my entire tripthey have double rooms as well.
High-speed US Army Chemical Corps officer takes first place in Savannah Bridge Run
by Walter T. Ham IV for Army.mil NewsA high-speed U.S. Army Chemical Corps officer took first place in the ruck division of the 10-kilometer Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run in Savannah, Georgia.
U.S. Army 1st Lt. Brian M. O’Leary, the team leader of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Response Team 2 from the 25th CBRNE Company (Technical Escort), competed against 67 other athletes in the ruck division of the race.
O’Leary came in 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher during the race that went through historic downtown Savannah and across a steep bridge.
“The bridge run is something of an institution here in Savannah, so I had wanted to participate since I moved here,” said O’Leary.
The race took place on a cool morning with misty rain and heavy fog blanketing the historic city in coastal Georgia. The Savannah race had more than 4,200 competitors in all divisions.
The ruck division was much smaller, said O’Leary, a native of Zionsville, Indiana, who graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he studied Engineering Technology and Philosophy.
“My division was a 10-kilometer ruck route crossing the Talmadge Bridge twice, a 1.4-mile span at a 5.5 percent grade over the Savannah River,” said O’Leary. “That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s the steepest hill around. Standing on top of the bridge with a ruck on my back, looking over the river and the city below was a surreal experience that I’ll remember for a long time.”
Commissioned in the U.S. Army in May 2021, O’Leary leads a CBRNE Response Team that saves lives and enables operations.
CBRNE Response Teams tackle a variety of challenging missions, including initial sampling, limited decontamination, packaging, escorting, detection, munitions assessment, explosive threat mitigation and contaminated sensitive site exploitation.
The Fort Stewart, Georgia-based CBRNE Response Team 2 is part of the 25th CBRNE Company, 83rd CBRN Battalion, 48th Chemical Brigade and 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command, the U.S. military’s premier CBRNE formation.
From 19 bases in 16 states, Soldiers and Army civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command confront and defeat the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations.
To forge stronger relationships with other units, O’Leary also recently organized the Norwegian Foot March on Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The Norwegian Foot March is an 18.6-mile, 25-pound rucksack march where participants who complete the march in the prescribed timeframe before dawn and work a full day after the march earn a Norwegian Armed Forces Skill Badge.
“We had 97 Soldiers attend from 20 units across Fort Stewart,” said O’Leary. “I was very pleased with the turnout. The goal of the event was to build relationships with units on post to help our Chemical Soldiers better integrate with and enable them when we train in the field. With so many units being represented, we built a lot of great
relationships that should leave a lasting impact on the installation.”
Capt. Jose G. Matos, the commander of the 756th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), was the first-place finisher in the Norwegian Foot March with a time of 3 hours and 43 minutes. The 756th EOD Company is part of the 184th EOD Battalion, 52nd EOD Group and 20th CBRNE Command.
A graduate of Interamerican University of Puerto Rico who is from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Matos has served in the Army for eight years after serving in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves for eight years and deploying twice on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
Demonstrating his commitment to physical fitness, O’Leary usually exercises twice a day, in the morning for physical training and again at the end of the day with a few of his Soldiers.
“While I’ve always had a passion for running, rucking and cycling, muscular strength and overall fitness were new challenges that the Army introduced to me,” said O’Leary. “When I joined ROTC, it took me a long time to get my fitness to a place that I could be proud of.”
O’Leary said physical fitness is critical to mission readiness in the U.S. Army, the world’s premier ground combat force.
“A fit body is the foundation of a strong Soldier,” said O’Leary. “Being fit means more than running fast and lifting heavy. It means living a lifestyle that allows you to sustain that level of strength for the long haul. Diet, sleep, stress management, injury recovery, and of course, strenuous exercise all play a factor.”
The CBRNE Response Team leader said his focus on fitness has helped him to set the example for his Soldiers and gives him experience to lean on when he is pushing them to improve.
O’Leary learned the importance of grit, tenacity and determination from firsthand experience.
A few years before commissioning, O’Leary broke his neck in an accident during an interstate cycling trip. He said the long road to recovery was a tremendous setback.
“Once I got clear of the restrictions the injuries brought, I attacked fitness with a new resolve; understanding how fragile life is has given me a new dedication to
be as strong and as capable as I can,” said O’Leary. “Not long after the end of my recovery, I rucked my first 30 miler.”
O’Leary challenged other Soldiers to push themselves further than they think possible.
“For Soldiers who are trying to work on fitness, I’d say this: exercise is supposed to be uncomfortable,” said O’Leary, who hopes to attend Ranger School later this year. “I remember how hard it was to get into the gym for the first time or to push myself to get out and start my first long run. Remember that if you want to be something you’ve never been before, you need to get out and do something you’ve never done before.”
Sports heroes who served: Olympic gold medalist in hurdles was a career Soldier
by David Vergun Department of Defense NewsWillie Davenport competed in the Summer Olympics’ 110-meter hurdles in 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976, winning a gold medal in 1968 and bronze in 1976.
Davenport also was one of the few athletes to participate in the Winter Olympics, competing in 1980 in the bobsledding event.
Besides having a successful athletic career, Davenport also made a career in the Army, first enlisting in 1961. His duty stations included Lee Barracks in Mainz, West Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1965.
Using his GI Bill, Davenport attended Southern University A&M in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While in college, he joined the Southern Jaguars football team.
Davenport excelled at college football and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints as a wide receiver in 1969. He was also drafted by the San Diego Chargers later in 1969.
However, he never signed a contract with either team.
In his 1980 try on the U.S. bobsled team at the Winter Olympics, his fourman team finished 12th.
“There is myth in this country that Blacks can’t make the Winter Olympic team. Jeff [Jordan] and I proved this to be wrong and that you don’t have to be rich and white to make it,” Davenport told “Jet” magazine in 1980. Jordan was on Davenport’s bobsled team.
In 1981, Davenport received a direct commission in the Louisiana Army National Guard. He later commanded the Oregon Army National Guard’s 741st Corps Support Battalion.
In January 1993, Davenport became the Army’s track coach. His duties not only included coaching, but also recruiting and assessing athletes who applied for the 70-member team.
“I have something to contribute. Not just because of my experience but because to be a coach you must be a teacher and a motivator. And I think I qualify,” Davenport said.
He coached the All-Army men’s and women’s track teams to an unprecedented four undefeated seasons from 1993-96.
“He really relished working with young people and helping them along. He understood how the Army’s sports program worked, said Army Chief Warrant Officer Dennis Loy.
The athletes who run in the summer and slide in bobsleds during the winter were important to him, but so were the young athletes. One indication of Davenport’s commitment to America’s youths, Loy said, was an annual celebrity golf tournament he held in Oregon. The proceeds provided college scholarships for young women.
Davenport became chief of the National Guard Bureau’s Office of Sports Management in September 1999. He had planned to retire before his 60th birthday on June 8, 2003, but he died of a heart attack on June 17, 2002.
Davenport was 59 and had attained the rank of colonel.
The Global Gateway on display
Looking for something to do on a spring weekend and experience an awesome, historic and red-hot steel setting? An exciting option may be just down the road towards France, full of Saarland’s coal and iron history, interesting changing exhibits and a trip into the past.
The Völklingen Ironworks (German: Völklinger Hütte) is a former blastfurnace complex located in the town of Völklingen, just past Saarbrücken. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 due to its exceptional preservation and testimony to ferrous metallurgy and the Industrial Revolution.
Iron production took place from 1882 until 1986, when it had to be closed due to ecological reasons. Sink holes, attributed to coal mining, were discovered throughout Saarland and the additional steel crisis made this step inevitable. Up until then it was the only intact ironworks surviving the 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and North America.
In 1873 Julius Buch planned and built steel works on the banks of the Saar River, an ideal location close to numerous coal mines in the region. In 1881 Karl Röchling acquired the complex and constructed a blast furnace for producing iron and two years later smelter operations began. Furnaces were added between 1885 and 1893 and a coking plant was opened in 1897. In 1900 the first gas-blowing engines were introduced, making it the first largescale ironworks to use gas to operate the blast furnaces. By 1910, Völklingen Ironworks was Germany’s largest producer of steel beams, a large conveyor belt system was installed in the plant, and the technology used at the ironworks became a model for other factories across the world during the early 20th century.
With a shortage of labor during and after World War I, up to 1,446 people from territories occupied by Germany, most of them from Russia and Belgium, were forced to work involuntarily at the ironworks between 1915 and 1918. Forced labor was again used in World War II, when a total of 12,393 people, including prisoners of war and civilians
deported from the Soviet Union, worked at the plant under miserable conditions. After World War II, only minor maintenance was conducted until the plant closed in 1986, but retains its 1930sera appearance today, with intact blast furnaces and the original coking plant. In 1996 the museum was opened with the aim of presenting its history and making the site culturally accessible for visitors to explore and dive into the past.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Today the Völklinger Hütte is a hands-on museum and also a unique location for international exhibitions, festivals and concerts. The Ferrodrom is an interactive science center focusing on the making of iron and visitors can tour the production areas, where huge gas machines stand in the blower hall. The outdoor area features tall towers with a platform at 45 meters (147 feet) height with a grand view over the vast and almost spooky premises. Since 2011 it has also been a venue for the annual UrbanArt Biennale displaying urban art.
In addition to the permanent display on the premises and in production halls, the following exhibitions are currently
being featured: German cinema from 1895 to present (until Aug. 2024), “We all except the others” (until Sep. 2024), Movement.Power.History (until Aug. 2024), The Story of Planet A, a comic series of 14 billion years of history (until Apr. 2024), and “Forced Labor,” as a permanent exhibition, and further exhibitions planned later in the year.
The site also offers a bistro with snacks and warm drinks in the historic production hall, and except for the viewing platform, the Völklinger Hütte is easily accessible in all areas via ramps and elevators for walkers, wheelchairs and strollers. Guided tours in German, English, French and sign language are available upon prior request. For details, visit: https://voelklinger-huette.org/en/ Völklinger Hütte will be celebrating its 30th anniversary as World Heritage Site in a large event scheduled for June 2. Also, stay tuned for a Ramstein Road Trip on the topic coming soon!
Why not combine history with a shopping spree and a picturesque stroll along the Saar River, a visit to the grand casino or the prestigious castle with underground tunnels in Saarland’s capital Saarbrücken on the weekend?

Beethoven walking tour
Bonn offers a unique opportunity to see Beethoven’s origins- and they’ve preserved just about everything the man touched. For tourists, the city offers a self-guided walking tour — aptly named the “Beethoven Walk” — which features 16 points of interest, all related to the famous composer. Some stops on the tour are more noteworthy than others; nonetheless, the walk is a good way to get a feel for the city. You can pick up a pamphlet with a map of the walk at the Bonn Information office (Windeckstrasse 1).
Some highlights along the route include Beethoven’s Haus (the house where he was born and raised) which is now a museum complete with instruments. Follow the journey through the musician’s life with a stop at St. Remigius Parish Church (Pfarrkirche St. Remigius) where a 10-year-old Beethoven played the organ during Sunday service (the organ itself is at the Beethoven Haus). The grave of Beethoven’s mother is also featured on the tour and is an interesting and humanizing historical marker. Also popular is the “Beton” concrete sculpture featuring a bust of Beethoven, done by artist Klaus Kammerichs in 1986.
Market Square and Altes Rathaus
I’m a sucker for a good daily market and Bonn’s market in the center of town is a great one, with vendors filling the square outside of the Altes Rathaus.
In the evening, when the market clears, you can get a better view of the beautiful Altes Rathaus (old city hall) without the crowds.
Sterntor
This Roman gate originally stood near the edge of town but was moved to this tourist friendly locale. The Sterntor dates back to 13th century and is really impressive to see up close.
Botanical Garden
Behind the beautiful Bonn University is Bonn’s famous Botanical Garden (Botanische Gärten in German). The Botanical Garden is best known for being home to the Titus Arum, the world’s largest flower, which is well known for its distinctive rotting smell (although it is currently dormant). The grounds here house around
11,000 plant species both in indoor greenhouses and sprawling outdoor gardens.
Bonner Münster
Bonner Münster church is a Roman Catholic Church in the center of the city. Its grand stature is hard to miss. Out front, giant sculpted heads of Saint Cassius and Florentius lend an ominous and artistic edge to one of Germany’s oldest churches.
Museums
Bonn has no shortage of cultural attractions and, lucky for visitors, they’ve conveniently cultivated many of them in the Museum Mile. Located along the B9, the
OHA survey empowers KMC service members
by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public AffairsAn Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate.
The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses.
Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.
KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates.
The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses.
Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members.
To take the 2024 OHA and Utility survey, please visit https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/ Overseas-Housing-Allowance/OHA-DataCollection-Surveys/
Museum Mile accommodates five museums all within walking distance. The Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik is a free museum located on the strip which highlights “contemporary German history.”
How to get there
By car Bonn is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes north of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 50 minutes northwest of Wiesbaden and 3 hours and 30 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.
For train details and additional information, visit the DB Bahn website at https://www.bahn.de/.
Army Secretary says astronaut’s Army values inspire others
by David Vergun Department of Defense NewsArmy Col. (Dr.) Frank Rubio, an astronaut, orbited Earth for 371 days, setting a U.S. record for the most days in space on a single spaceflight.
Rubio “is a stellar example of the Army’s core values and what it means to lead a life of service,” said Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, who presented him with the Army Astronaut Device during a pinning ceremony at the Pentagon today.
Those core values, she said, include leadership, team building and resilience. All values that have served him well on Earth and in space.
There are only two other active-duty soldiers who have this device today, she noted.
“Col. Rubio has a powerful U.S. Army story to tell, how his experiences in the Army developed him into the leader he is today and how he has managed to maintain strong relationships with his family that weathered
deployments everywhere on Earth, as well as in space,” she said. Among the places he
deployed to were Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. During those deployments, he logged over 600 combat flight hours piloting his
Black Hawk helicopter, she said. Besides being an astronaut, Rubio is also a medical doctor and has worked in a number of
Army medical treatment facilities, Wormuth said.
Rubio said what he did was a team accomplishment — the teams being the Army and NASA, as well as his wife and four children.
Of his family, Rubio said, “Without them and the support that I get from them, none of this would have been possible.” He also thanked the NASA team who provided him with outstanding training.
Young soldiers today have great opportunities to make incredible achievements, he said.
Rubio’s 371 days started Sept. 21, 2022, when he left Earth on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station.
On Sept. 27, he landed back on Earth, having traveled 157,412,306 statute miles. During his time in space, he saw the arrival of 15 visiting space vehicles to the space station, and he conducted three spacewalks that totaled 21 hours, 24 minutes.
