Ramstein honors women during luncheon Story and photo by Senior Airman Caitlin O’Neil-McKeown 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Women’s History Month is in its third week and Ramstein hosted its annual luncheon Monday to celebrate some of the great women who helped forge history. This year’s theme is women inspiring innovation through imagination. “This year is dedicated to celebrating women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Master Sgt. Richard Cring, 86th Security Forces Squadron NCOIC of commander support staff. “McMullen is just one of the many women who encompasses all of these traits. The event was able to bring her out to the community and provide them with the opportunity to hear her story.” Dr. Dell W. McMullen, Kaiserslautern school district superintendent and luncheon guest speaker, talked See LUNCHEON, Page 3

ASBBC-Europe team puts blood into lifeblood

Commentary

by Maj. Patrick A. Cutter 86th Medical Squadron chief, Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Europe Donate blood! To those who already donate blood and the volunteers who help coordinate blood drives: Thank you! Each year, the generosity of blood donors and volunteers allow the Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Europe, based in Bldg. 3738 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, to fulfill its mission of providing quality blood products to service members and dependents within Europe and Africa during peacetime and war. Donors are true heroes who make a difference and save lives. We turn your donations into products that help ensure the young Soldier critically wounded by an explosion survives, the Airman’s daughter suffering from cancer has a better chance of successfully battling a terrible disease, and the dependent spouse injured in a horrible car accident does not succumb to their injuries. In many cases, the availability of blood makes the difference

Facebook, said Spence, host of AFN’s popular morning show. “Folks enjoy being able to hear something on air and then interact later on,” Spence said. “Facebook allows us to do that. If you’re driving and hear a topic you want to discuss, you can go online later and ask your question.” Afterward, from 8 to 9 a.m., the conversation goes virtual, with the commander answering questions on the garrison Facebook page, www.facebook.com/army. kaiserslautern.

between life and death. I am very proud of the service we at the ASBBC-Europe provide and the support we receive from the community. The ASBBC-Europe conducts approximately 150 blood drives and distributes more than 5,000 blood products each year. The blood you see us collect at locations, such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center, is the blood made available for the wounded warriors and your loved ones. It is Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and patriotic civilians giving the gift of life to our fellow brothers and sisters in need. It is humbling when I see the impact our donors and volunteers have and to know it is their contribution that makes blood available on the battlefield and in our treatment facilities. If you are not familiar with our process and wish to donate or volunteer, I ask that you visit the Armed Services Blood Program website at www.militaryblood.dod. mil/europe. At this helpful site, you will find information regarding the blood donation process, the history of the military blood program, reasons someone may not be eligible to donate and a calendar listing all

of the blood drives within the area. Unfortunately, current guidelines do not allow us to take donations from individuals who have lived in Europe for more than 60 months total within their lifetime. Also, those who have recently deployed to locations such as Africa or Afghanistan are not eligible to donate blood until at least one year has passed from their return from deployment. In addition to traditional blood drives, we also use a procedure called apheresis in which we only collect platelets from the donor and the remaining components are returned simultaneously. Platelets help to regulate clotting and prevent excessive bleeding. Platelet donations are invaluable and are needed in instances where a patient with a low platelet count due to cancer, anemia or other blood disease are unable to produce their own. Blood donors may only donate once every eight weeks; however, platelet donors can give up to 24 times a year. The platelet donations are scheduled appointments and may take up to two hours. We do have a library of movies and music for donors to select from to keep

them occupied during the time they volunteer to be with us. Hopefully, you or any of your family members will never need a blood transfusion. However, be assured that the hard-working staff of the ASBBC-Europe and LRMC’s Transfusion Services have dedicated themselves to making sure the blood inventory is safe, screened for disease, efficiently managed and ready when needed. This staff is a diverse organization of expert civilian and military medical laboratory professionals with a common ambition to treat each patient as family and provide the highest possible quality service. The urgent call for blood can come at any moment, and these individuals are always ready to get the job done. It is a strong team, but we depend on the support of the local military community. I need you to be a part of our team by donating blood or time. Please contact the ASBBCEurope staff at 06371-86-7107 or 486-7107 with questions you may have regarding the blood program, volunteer opportunities or donor eligibility.

435th CRG conducts cargo operations in Romania by the 435th Air Mobility Squadron CONSTANTA, Romania — Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Group conducted aerial port and command and control of operations in Constanta, Romania, Feb. 15 to March 10, supporting deployment and redeployment of personnel and unit equipment to and from Operation Enduring Freedom. Establishing port operations in Romania allows personnel and cargo to change transportation methods part way through the movement, providing flexibility and more cost-effective options for U.S. Central Command deployments. “This operation allows us to keep military aircraft closer to the area of responsibility and transition passengers to commercially contracted airlift when military airlift is no longer required,” said Lt. The events included book readings for children, booths to quiz knowledge, the annual luncheon and the final professional development seminar. “I hope that attendees of this luncheon as well as participants of Women’s History Month will recognize the effort women contribute,” said Capt. This included processing them in, providing life support and out-processing, all in synch with the airlift flow. Janyska said the members of the 435th CRG pride themselves on providing a robust, customized capability with a minimal footprint. The unit’s motto, “Light, lean, lethal,” is also their way of doing business. “This entire operation is about finding a more efficient way to move forces into and out of theater,” he said. “Keeping our footprint light is a big part of that.”

ech. Sgt. Timothy Ledford, 86th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment craftsman, was honored with the aircrew flight equipment NCO of the year award for his outstanding accomplishments. The purpose of the NCO of the year award is to acknowledge Air Force military, civilian individuals and units for exceptional perfor-

mance in the line of duty. “Ledford exemplifies the core values of the Air Force and I am very pleased to work with him,” said Master Sgt. Yancey Callahan, 86th OSS AFE superintendent. “He is an NCO who his peers and subordinates should strive to emulate.” Ledford contributed to AFE operations and implemented enhancements to readiness. His leadership and management skills helped him beat more than 60 other nominees. “He’s a great leader and mentor,” said Master Sgt. Marittza Stewart, 86th OSS AFE flight chief. “He con-

stantly exceeds all of our expectations.” Along with surpassing expectations, Ledford’s experience and training also played a part in him winning this award. He mentored 13 youths in English and math and helped turn failing grades to 3.0 grade point averages. He also completed unit deployment manager and professional development seminar course training, which allowed Ledford to solidify a 72-hour, short-notice response to operations in Libya and Africa. Ledford also graduated a combat survivor evader locater radio training

course, which helped him aid downed aircrew members and accomplish strategic missions and other operations. Ledford’s dedication and motivation to improve himself and those around him made him the perfect candidate to represent as the winner of this year’s AFE NCO award. “I’m very humbled and undeserving,” Ledford said. “Being a part of the AFE career field means that we have to be meticulous and pay very close attention to detail and I just want to live up to that and…do my best every day.”

AFAF helps Airmen Colors, music, customer service in times of crisis fill center during grand opening by Senior Airman Aaron-Forrest Wainwright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Assistance Fund was created to help raise funds in support of the Air Force family during times of need. AFAF is made up of four different organizations: the Air Force Villages, the Air Force Aid Society, the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation and the Air Force Enlisted Village. According to www.afas.org, the Air Force Aid Society is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help relieve financial distress of Air Force members and their families and to assist them in financing their higher education goals. AFAS relies heavily on monetary donations in order to fund its activities, and for almost 71 years Air Force members have been contributing to AFAS. These donations fund emergency assistance programs and help AFAS put money aside so emergency assistance needs can be met, and education programs can be strengthened. Tech. Sgt. Andrew Benton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa public affairs band flight chief, set up a fundraiser in his office and raised more than $420 for AFAF. Members brought food and all who attended donated to the charity. “The Air Force Assistance Funds donates money to enlisted and officer Air Force members in times of need,” Benton said. “Everyone needs help and AFAF is set up to help their own family.” All the organizations that make up AFAF focus on different ways to assist Air Force members and their families. Whether helping widows during times of financial crisis or paying for a plane ticket home during emotional turmoil, AFAF has been there to help lighten the burden for those in need. This year’s AFAF campaign is being held by active-duty Air Force bases between February and May. Active-duty installations conduct their campaigns for six consecutive weeks within the campaign window.

he sounds of cash registers and customers’ chatter mixed with cutters swiping fabric and speakers pulsing salsa music gave art enthusiasts reason to celebrate. Even before the official March 15 opening of the Kaiserslautern Arts and Cultural Center, people at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern were coming out to the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne to shop, said Ed Codina, the center’s director. The garrison’s directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation opened the doors in early March, followed by a two-day grand opening event. The store for fabric, supplies and notions – the tools and materials used for quilting and fine arts — is the anchor of the new center, Codina said. “We can offer the best fabrics store in all of MWR Europe,” he said, estimating the number of fabrics available. “I would put it in the hundreds.” They are what Codina calls state-of-the-art fabrics – the latest styles coming from quilt and trade shows, top manufacturers. And customers were thrilled to see them arrive. Ernie Gilgore, an avid quilter and knitter, said the new center fills a gap for art enthusiasts.

CHIEF’S CORNER

German Polizei Corner Avoid vehicle thefts, break-ins The German Polizei has been receiving notifications from Americans about vehicle thefts and break-ins. According to a statistical survey conducted by the Landstuhl Polizei department in 2012, 98 percent of Americans whose cars were stolen or broken into failed to secure their vehicles properly. Vehicle thefts and break-ins can be avoided. A safety-conscious attitude and the activation of an anti-theft system can avoid damage and worries. Always remove the ignition key, even when you are away for only a short time, like when getting gas. Only then is the car’s anti-theft device activated. Also, remember to let the steering wheel lock by clicking it into place. Always close windows, doors, the trunk, the sunroof and the gas cap, even if you are only away from the vehicle for a short time. A locked gas cap makes it difficult for a thief to steal gas.

The meaning behind our national anthem by Chief Master Sgt. Gregory N. Myers Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe superintendent What do you think of when you hear our U.S. national anthem? In the military, we have the privilege of hearing our anthem so often that I wonder if people forget the words and what they mean. I have even heard some people say we should change the words to something else more appropriate to the current spirit of our country and something the modern generation would understand better. You may agree or disagree, but if anything, it does cause one to ponder

Get ready! Most Airmen who fail their fitness assessments fail because they were not ready. Isn’t it surprising that although we are given either six or 12 months to maintain our physical fitness before the next assessment, some of us fail anyway? Some Airmen fail a component of the assessment, and then either walk out or quit trying hard with the remaining components. If we give up on our fitness assessment, how can our leadership advocate for us later? How will we know where we stand for improving? Many of the injuries that occur to some of us during an assessment are legitimate; however, some Airmen fake an injury once they realize they are not going to pass. Attempting to outsmart doctors and unit leadership only weakens the trust that these Airmen have worked so hard to build. We are left with an Airman who not only is not in shape, but is also dishonest. Those are a few examples of people who are not ready for their fitness assessments. If you’re not ready, then get ready. Whether you participate in a squadron PT program or have your own, you must give your best effort and not settle for less. You should know what you need to score to pass, but you should focus your physical fitness on exceeding that score (training for the minimum can produce minimal results). You should mostly eat healthy foods, and this means at home too, not just at work where your co-workers see you. Additionally, you can visit the health and wellness center if you need help improving your fitness. Last but not least, your fellow Airmen are standing by to help you, but you have to help yourself first. The point is this, if we live up to our core val-

more about the meaning of our anthem and what it means to us. Is it possible our familiarity with the anthem has masked the spirit we should have when we hear it played? I have taken the liberty of writing an alternate version with words that reflect the thoughts that go through my mind when I hear it play. This in no way takes away from the original words, but just clarifies for me — in modern terms — what the words mean to me today: Say, can you see it? The flag. There — it is still there. I can just make it out by the first light of day. It looks like it has

been through quite a battle, but it is so beautiful. We were all so proud of it, of each other, and what we stood for as the sun went down last night; it seemed to tie us all together — every person, every dream. Even as the battle raged all around us, its broad stripes and bright stars gallantly streamed in the wind, waving over the ramparts, and announcing our intention to stand strong against the enemy. When the sun went down, the battle intensified, and we fought on. If our courage wavered, if our resolve was tested in that dark place, we only had to wait for the red glare of a rocket or the light of a bomb bursting in the air. For in

ues of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do, none of us should fail our fitness assessments due to lack of preparation. If you’re not ready, then get ready! (Courtesy of Master Sgt. Dathan Hayes, 2nd Air Postal Squadron first sergeant)

And if we were still there, then all that we were fighting for still stood a chance to still be. A glance of the colors in the heat of battle gave us hope and the gritty resolve to do everything in our power to see that hope realized. Say, does that flag, that beautiful star spangled banner, still wave over a land of free men and women? Is it still the beacon of life and liberty, the vigilant guardian over the home of a brave nation? Please tell me our dream still lives on.

AFSO21 implements equipment swap by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As part of an Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century initiative, a recent equipment exchange program was implemented from Jan. 25 through Feb. 22. The main goal of this initiative was to find, share and redistribute supplies between units instead of having each unit purchase new ones. During initial planning, the team set up a SharePoint site in order to track and make supplies available to Airmen and units with access to it. However, only select members were able to update the site, said Capt. Luis Rosado-Medina, 86th Logistics Readiness Group executive. More than 100 personnel representing 86th Airlift Wing units were trained in the AFSO21 procedures. They were shown how to manage the SharePoint site and given guidelines on what they were

looking for in office storage closets. “During the training, I told them that we don’t need to have closets full of supplies,” said Master Sgt. Shannon Huffman, 86th Material Maintenance Squadron readiness NCOIC. “I explained that having a clean and organized storage room is important for people to be able to find the supplies needed.” First, the team needed to “clean house” and get all the supplies neat

and orderly. When that was finished, the next step was to document all supplies and make them available to the base. “More than $200,000 in supplies were found and posted on the website with more than $34,000 of that being redistributed,” Rosado-Medina said. Some of the office supplies available were toner, reams of paper, folders, surge protectors, pens and

notepads. Along with that were a few “not so ordinary” items like a treadmill, elliptical machine and video camera. “It is critical for us to save the Air Force money,” Huffman said. “We need to be responsible with the dollars that we are given and being able to share our assets is important.” Despite their best efforts, Airmen were finding misplaced office supplies after purchasing new ones just weeks before, Rosado-Medina said. This new process will hopefully help units avoid excess spending. “Any opportunity units have to avoid costs of purchasing something new and freeing up office space is worth utilizing a process like this,” Rosado-Medina said. “Every dollar we spend on pens is less bullets and less gas we are able to put on aircraft.” AFSO21’s framework can assist any unit in implementing ways to save time and money. The program also encourages everyone to look at their processes and find ways to improve them.

Sister before self by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Author’s note: This article was originally published Nov. 28. Due to significant interest in the outcome of the story, updates have been added for its completion. The day he found out about his sister’s condition, he knew he would go through any lengths necessary to help her. In December, Tech. Sgt. Simon Garcia, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron project manager, entered the operating room for an elective procedure — a kidney transplant. “I was notified about it and immediately I knew it was probably going to be me (who would be a match). I don’t know why or how, so I started the process,” he said in an interview prior to the surgery. Garcia knew there would be some special considerations about organ donation in the Air Force, so he began researching. “I’ve never known anyone who had to go through the process of being a match. It was a big learning curve for me and my leadership,” said the veteran cable dog. “(I) heard some rumors, or people’s minimal experience with the process…in the beginning it was daunting, but the more and more I dug with DOD policies and working my way down, everything (the policies) say is without coercion they encourage people to be donors whether that (is) blood or organs or bone marrow.” While in Germany, Garcia began medical tests “in correspondence.” He underwent procedures locally like DNA tests and CT scans, and sent results for analysis where his sister was being treated. He also received some outside help when his commander put him in contact with two wing commanders at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, who had also gone through the process of preparing for a kidney donation. “We reached out to (the wing commanders) and they emailed Sergeant Garcia back and encouraged him,” said Maj. Angela Freeman, 1st CMXS commander. “From the time I let my leadership know, they were on board with it and were fully supportive. I’m thankful for that,” said Garcia, recalling Freeman’s actions and also how his first sergeant had even walked around the base hospital asking questions for more information.

Through his persistence, Garcia was able to find a source who could guide him through the entire process when he met Senior Master Sgt. Jessica Dunn, 86th Medical Support Squadron TRICARE operations and patient administration flight superintendent. “(Dunn) was able to answer a lot of questions and point me in the right direction,” Garcia said. Although this was Dunn’s first time encountering a request for kidney donation, she was able to assist Garcia with the approval process up to the Air Force Medical Operations Agency. “AFMOA oversees the execution of the Air Force Surgeon General policy,” Dunn said. “My role is to ensure the member receives the appropriate AFIs and guidance...and make sure all the information that I can foresee the reviewing authority may ask (is available).” According to the office of the Air Force Surgeon General, there are approximately 10 organ donation requests per year, which are approved through AFMOA. However, approval to undergo the procedure does not excuse Airmen from potential risks to their health or career. “I counseled (Garcia) about the elective treatment and his subsequent ineligibility for disability compensation for any adverse residuals incurred secondary to the elective treatment,” Dunn said. “If he’s on a long-term profile, he may need to go through the medical evaluation board.” Garcia was expected to have a full recovery, but he knew risks were still a factor. With the possibility of complications resulting in removal from the military, the 15-year technical sergeant was steadfast in his decision to press forward with the procedure. “My primary focus right now is my sister, so I mean (my career) kind of comes second,” he said approximately a month prior to surgery. “I’ve been (in the military) going on 15 (years) so if it’s time for me to make a change, then its time.” The surgery took place as scheduled with Evelyn Garcia’s body accepting her little brother’s kidney as its own. “Surgery went about as smooth as one can pray for,” said Garcia in a recent interview. “I received the news immediately as I came to. I remember asking how she was…however I was too medicated to absorb the good news…I knew by faith that it was going to work out.”

In December, Tech. Sgt. Simon Garcia, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron project manager, entered the operating room for an elective procedure, a kidney transplant, to save his sister’s life. The surgery took place as scheduled with Evelyn Garcia’s body accepting her little brother’s kidney as its own. Recently, both brother and sister have returned to work and are thankful to have overcome the challenges faced by surgery. According to the office of the Air Force surgeon general, there are approximately 10 organ donation requests per year, which are approved through the Air Force Medical Operations Agency. However, approval to undergo the procedure does not excuse Airmen from potential risks to their health or career.

His sister expressed a similar story. “When I woke up I was struggling to get that mask off because I wanted to know how my brother was doing. That’s the first thing I asked after I was able to get the words out,” Evelyn said. “The only thing about all this is that I didn’t want my baby brother to do this, because he was young and had a family to tend to and because he’s my little brother. I’m supposed to be the one there for him, not the other way around. “But it’s like he told me, ‘Would you have done it for me?’ And without missing a beat I replied to him, ‘Yes,’ because that’s what you do for your brothers and sisters,” she continued. “I guess we are made from the same cloth.” Since the surgery, Garcia has accomplished what he set as his goal three months ago: getting his sister better and returning back to work, now at his new duty station at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass. “I have since resumed most of my daily physical activities, and as far as work, I can do everything I did before,” he said. Both brother and sister say the experience has helped them maintain perspective on challenges in life. “I feel the same as I did before about the surgery,” Garcia said. “Try and not dwell over trivial issues and cherish those you love because their life can come to an end in the blink of an eye.” “I look at life differently. I am blessed and tend to take things more slowly than before,” Evelyn said.

“I guess you can say I’m enjoying life more and seeing things more clearly.” The technical sergeant extended his thanks to his wife for her care, his former medical care provider, the 86th Medical Group, as well as members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, including the 1st CMXS and their squadron commander. Evelyn was grateful to the medical team who performed the surgery, but mostly she thanked her brother. “I love my baby brother and that has never changed; I will always love him, but there are no words for what he has done for me,” she said. “We were bonded by blood before, but now even more so. We are bonded forevermore, a literal piece of him lives in me now. Thank you, my little brother, Simon Peter.” For others who may face the decision or challenges coming with an organ donation, Garcia offers his story and this advice: “I encourage those that are thinking of doing this to definitely do your research and contact me if you have any questions. I will do my best to share my experience with you to help you make your decision. I pray that you have the same support I had throughout this process. Stay adamant and stay patient. It’ll work itself out.” For more information on the organ donation process, consult Air Force Instruction 41-210, par. 2.53; AFI 44-102, par. 6.12; TRICARE Policy Manual section 7.1, chapter 1; TPM section 24.8, chapter 4; and TPM section 24.9, chapter 4.

Lessons From A Pro

Invest for retirement now by Staff Sgt. David Salanitri Air Force Public Affairs Agency WASHINGTON — A member of the Air Force Civic Leader program and financial expert recently addressed several ways Airmen can prepare better for retirement. John O’Connor, chairman of J.H. Whitney Investment Management, spoke about what Airmen can do now to take away a substantial pension by the time they retire. Currently, only 13 percent of enlisted and only 16 percent of officers collect a pension, he said. Thinking about the future can be hard, but starting young can make life easier down the road. “The whole secret to getting where you want to be is starting with a plan,” O’Connor said. He emphasized the first step Airmen should take is to educate themselves on their finances. “The biggest mistake people make is overspending,” he said. “They get used to carrying some sort of consumer debt. The best investment you can make is to pay down debt if you have it.” Once debt is paid down, Airmen

should begin saving and letting compound interest work on their behalf, O’Connor said. “Once you begin to save, you begin to earn interest on your interest,” he said. “Time can either be on your side, or time can be your adversary.” O’Connor stressed that all Airmen should enroll in the thrift savings plan, or a similar retirement plan, as soon as possible. That retirement plan can then be “the keystone tool around which a lot of your other choices can be made,” he said. He added that Airmen shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help as solutions may be one calculation away. “Because it was born as a math problem, it can be fixed as a math problem,” O’Connor said. The next step is to understand the true value of a dollar. O’Connor said people need to learn how to spend money wisely. “Always think of the price of something, not as what’s on the sticker, but in terms of the pretax money I have to earn to pay for the price on the price tag,” he said. During the week, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and local military leaders met with students to discuss career management and building resiliency. Each professional discussed bouncing back from hardship from their own perspective. “Something very special about the training being provided by the military resiliency trainers is that it’s the same training many of the student’s parents receive,” said KHS school psychologist Kirsten Kone. “I have found that the students listen and take to heart the skills taught by these Soldiers because their parents go through the same training.” The four NCOs offered their train-

ing during two school periods, reaching more than 160 students. Each resiliency trainer took a small group to a different portion of an auditorium to interact with the students on a more personal level. The training goal was to find out what the students thought resiliency means and how they can become more resilient. “We hope that the students will talk freely with us about how they perceive events in their lives and how they react,” said Sgt. 1st Class Veronica Short, the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st TSC master resiliency trainer. “We hope to help them put events in their lives into perspective and have a more positive outlook.” Each trainer gave a brief introduction to their group, then simply asked how everyone in the group was doing. The students spoke to each trainer about subjects varying from how they interact with their parents, dealing with deployments and school dress code policy. With every topic, the trainers encouraged their group to assess each issue and discuss why that topic is so important. “We want these students to walk away from this with a different view of their world,” Short said. “A lot of

these kids deal with peer pressure and they think high school will never end. We want them to have a different perspective so they can see a bigger picture of the world.” As each session came to a close, it was apparent that both the students and their trainers enjoyed taking this time to talk. Students asked the school faculty for just a little more time to discuss their issues and learn from the Soldiers.

“Building resiliency in these students is so important, because it will help these kids make important life decisions as they get older,” said Sgt. 1st Class Erica Stenson, the operations NCO for the 266th Financial Management Support Center. “I know I had a great time talking to the students, and I think they will walk away with a better understanding of what it means to be resilient.”

How much do you know about rabies?

Dental Health Month at KES

R

abies is a virus that is normally spread by the bite of an infected (rabid) animal. The virus is almost always fatal without proper postexposure treatment. In Germany, including in the Rheinland-Pfalz area, the risk for rabies is very low. Wild animals known to carry rabies in Germany are foxes and bats. Rabies is still common in more than 150 countries and is often found in stray dogs, cats and other wild animals. You can protect yourself and your family by reducing your exposure to rabies and seeking care if exposed. How can I reduce my exposure to rabies? • Vaccinate pets (cats, dogs and ferrets) on a regular basis. You can schedule appointments with the Pulaski Veterinary Clinic by calling 493-4444 or 0631-34064444. • Avoid contact with stray and unfamiliar animals. • Avoid and report dogs and cats that appear unusually hostile, confused or timid. • Do not handle wild animals, especially bats. • Minimize situations that attract wild and stray animals, such as leaving the lids of your outside trash cans open and leaving pet food out. • During daylight hours, be particularly careful of wild animals that are not normally out during the day, such as bats. How can I reduce the risk of rabies during and after my deployment? • Avoid contact with stray and unfamiliar animals. • Never “adopt” stray animals as mascots. • Immediately report all bites and scratches to your supervisor and seek care from a health care provider. Make sure to clean wound with mild soap and water before seeking care. Altered behavior may be one of the first signs of rabies — nocturnal animals seen during daylight, normally timid animals becoming more bold, etc. Who can I contact if I see a stray animal on base or in base housing? Contact 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Customer Service at 489-6623/7703/7107 or 0631-536-6623. What are the symptoms of rabies in humans? Early symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat and feeling tired. Advanced symptoms include pain and tingling at the place where bitten, seeing things that aren´t really there, a fear of water because of sudden tightening of the muscles in the throat, paralysis and the inability to move parts of the body. When should I seek treatment? Seek medical care right away if bitten by an animal that you suspect could have rabies. In people, it can take several months to show signs of rabies. By the time symptoms begin to show, the disease is almost always fatal. If you relocate or return from a deployment before finishing post-exposure treatment, make sure to notify a provider at your new location. For more information, including prevention tips, contact the public health department at 479-2086 or 0637146-2086, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/rabies. For the Love of Freud Story and photo by Laura Rutkowski Contributing writer London is notorious for attracting swarms of tourists to its well-known landmarks and museums. While London’s hotspots are remarkable in their own right, I am interested in a different London. The London I speak of is concealed well, hidden along cobbled streets, marked with poorly placed or nonexistent signs. Venturing off the beaten track allows for an intimacy with London, an intimacy that is spoiled when shared with hoards of tourists. A lesser-known gem of London exists in the form of the Freud Museum. Located at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead, the museum is the former home of the father of psychoanalysis, Dr. Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis is a technique used in therapy to bring forth repressed thoughts and experiences so they can be dealt with effectively. Freud and his family fled to London after the Nazis took control of Austria in 1938. Turned into a museum by Freud’s daughter, Anna, the quaint home contains not only Sigmund’s possessions, but a whole room dedicated to Anna as well. Most impressive of all is perhaps Freud’s study, where books line the shelves and his desk sits comfortably in the decadent room. The appearance is unexpected to say the least. A mixture of Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Oriental statues, figurines and ornaments clutter up the room in an endearing way.

The main feature of the study is Freud’s psychoanalytic couch, where Freud’s patients were asked to free associate. Free association involves speaking about anything that comes to mind without choosing something specific to talk about. Adorning the couch are a lavish Iranian rug and chenille pillows. Undeniably, the couch looks very inviting to lie on. In fact, the room does not convey the predicted clinical image, but rather, it shows off Freud’s taste and personality. Other areas of visitation in the house include the dining room, conservatory, Anna Freud’s room and landing. In addition, the Freud museum hosts exhibitions in a designated room, showcasing different kinds of art and Freud-themed work. In the video room, home videos of the Freud family can be viewed. The museum gift shop is located in the conservatory, where practically anything can be bought, from Freud finger puppets to books detailing his works. While the Freud museum might be an acquired taste, or a place for psychology majors such as myself to revel in, the museum is also fascinating for anyone to experience. Previous knowledge of Freud is unnecessary, because the museum provides ample amounts of background information. London is a city full of people, constant bustle and an abundance of things to do. Family Advocacy observes April as Child Abuse Awareness Month by Carmen Schott Ramstein Family Advocacy outreach manager April is a very important month to many agencies here at Ramstein. I always joke that April is the month of everything. It is known as Month of the Military Child, Alcohol Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Autism Awareness Month, to name a few. Most importantly, it is also known as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. We are always try-

ing to prevent child abuse, but this month is more about remembrance. Throughout the year, Ramstein Family Advocacy works hard to provide resources, classes and support to military families in the KMC. April is a very special month to remember how precious and innocent our children are. Children are the most precious resource we have. Their honesty and innocence enables them to show great compassion and love to others. Children are our future, and it is important to remember that April is

the month of honoring all the children in this world, especially our military children. Family Advocacy will be out in the community in April, networking and providing information and resources to families at various events. We will be providing an information table at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center April 1 with a variety of other base agencies kicking off the month of April. We will be giving out information on parenting, stress management, anger management and variety of self-help tools. We are here to help military families

and are here to be a source of support for parents. In April, we will be offering a wonderful course titled, “Active Parenting of Teens,” and for anyone out there who has a teenager, I am sure you have been tested and struggled at some point on what was the right discipline or path for your own teen. As parents, we want the best for our children and when they become teenagers many things begin to change. We are offering support for parents and providing practical skills that can help enhance the relationship parents have with their teenagers.

The model train swap met in Ramstein-Miesenbach displays various model train set-ups, accessories, dolls and miniature cars Sunday.

amstein-Miesenbach’s culture and conference center, Haus des Bürgers, will turn into a mecca for model train fans Sunday when the Model Train Friends Westpfalz sponsors its 42nd Model Train Swap Meet. “We received requests for display tables from more than 50 exhibitors and clubs from Germany and other countries,” said organizer Günter Wenner. “Unfortunately, we were not able to accept all requests, because there only is a certain space capacity in the Haus des Bürgers.” Vendors will present everything dealing with model trains and accessories. The event also will display dolls, doll accessories, tin toys and miniature cars. The international swap meet is a special market and the biggest of its kind in southwest Germany. Besides new items, there will also be used locomotives, carriages, tracks, signals, houses, lamps, bridges and spare parts. Collectors will find bargains and receive good advice from experts. “As organizers, we put the emphasis on displaying specific items,” Wenner said. “The swap meet is not just an event to swap, sell and buy, but also an opportunity to show off unique pieces and set ups.” There will be a special test track, where the newly bought stuff can be tested right away. Also on display will be garden railroad track items presented by garden railroad vendors. Model car race fans can enjoy a racetrack. A model train cafe will be set up in the foyer, where visitors can take a break. The swap meet will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; doors open at 10 a.m. Admission fee is €3 for adults, €1 for youth and free for children.

Visit www.kaiserslauternamerican.com/movies.php for details The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (PG-13) — Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray, whose cult following surges with each

outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act — both onstage and off — if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place. Starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey. The Call (R) — In order to save a young girl’s life, an emergency operator must confront a killer from her past. Starring Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin.

I am 43 year old male inquiring if anyone would like to attend a Jazz concert in Mallorca in May. I would like to go with someone (perferrable a female, but a male is welcome) to this concert. I have already purchased my plane ticket, I am more looking for someone to share hotel accommodations. The price is almost doubled for a single person. In addition, we can see the island together. If all goes well, we can become Travel buddies, because I am always traveling. Let me know if you are interested, serious inquiries only thank you. Andrew email: myemailtotalk.g@gmail.com
