In the heartland of Germany, Ramstein Air Base embodies and celebrates Veterans Day every day with their workforce and retiree community. There are approximately 56,000 active-duty military, family members, and DoD civilians that live in and around the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The KMC also includes a robust retiree community that thrives in this area, which is the largest American settlement outside of the United States. Veterans Day is a celebration of all those who have served in the military at some point, no matter how long. Ramstein Air Base is a living example of veterans at work every day, for their country, and for their host nation, ensuring the safety and security of base personnel and their families. During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate Indigenous peoples past and present and rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, promoting Tribal self-determination, and upholding the United States’ solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations. America has not always delivered on its promise of equal dignity and respect for Native Americans. For centuries, broken treaties, dispossession of ancestral lands, and policies of assimilation and termination sought to decimate Native populations and their ways of life. But despite this painful history, Indigenous peoples, their governments, and their communities have persevered and flourished. As teachers and scholars, scientists and doctors, writers and artists, business leaders and elected officials, heroes in uniform, and so much more, they have made immeasurable contributions to our country’s progress. We must do more to ensure that Native Americans have every opportunity to succeed and that their expertise informs our Federal policy-making. That is why my Administration is engaging in meaningful consultation with Tribal leaders, particularly when it comes to treaty rights, reserved rights, management and stewardship of Federal lands, consideration of Indigenous Knowledge, and other policies that affect Native peoples. That is also why I appointed Secretary Deb Haaland to be the first-ever Native American Cabinet Secretary, and why more than 50 Native Americans now serve in significant roles across the executive branch. Meanwhile, we are creating new jobs in Native American communities and bolstering infrastructure in Tribal areas. My Administration’s American Rescue plan made the largest-ever investment in Indian Country to help Tribal Nations combat the COVID-19 pandemic and to support Tribal economic recovery. My Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law secured more

than $13 billion exclusively for Native communities to deliver high-speed internet to Tribal lands, build safer roads and bridges, modernize sanitation systems, and provide clean drinking water — all while putting people to work. Through the Inflation Reduction Act, we are lowering the price of health care coverage and capping drug costs for Indigenous families. We are empowering Tribes to fight drought, improve fisheries, and transition to clean energy as part of the most significant climate investment this Nation has ever made. Those investments include climate adaptation planning and community-led relocation efforts, funding a Tribal Electrification Program to provide power to unelectrified homes, making Environmental Justice Block Grants available to

help alleviate legacy pollution, bolstering conservation programs across the country, and restoring protections for treasured lands that Indigenous peoples have tirelessly stewarded, such as Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. We are also helping Native communities heal from intergenerational trauma caused by past policies. Last year, the Department of the Interior launched the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to shed light on the harmful history of forced cultural assimilation at these academic institutions. We are investing in Tribal language revitalization, protecting Tribal voting rights, and working with Tribal partners to tackle the crisis of missing or murdered Indigenous people.

As we look ahead, my Administration will continue to write a new and better chapter in the story of our Nation-to-Nation relationships. We will defend Tribal sovereignty, self-government, selfdetermination, and the homelands of Tribal Nations. We will support Tribal economies, recognizing that Tribal governments provide a vast array of physical infrastructure, social services, and good-paying jobs that benefit their citizens and surrounding communities. We will keep fighting for better health care, child care, education, and housing in Tribal communities. We will always honor the profound impact Native Americans continue to have in shaping our Nation and bringing us closer to the more perfect Union we know we can and must be. Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden

Jr., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 2022 as National Native American Heritage Month. I urge all Americans, as well as their elected representatives at the Federal, State, and local levels, to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities, and to celebrate November 25, 2022, as Native American Heritage Day. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh. — Joseph R. Biden Jr.

VETERANS DAY from page 1 Ramstein is within proximity to several American Battle Monuments Commission cemeteries and memorials that host Veterans Day ceremonies each year. To all our veterans, thank you for your service! History November 11 is synonymous

with the last month, last day, last hour, and last minute of World War I. Originally coined “Armistice Day” by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, the day celebrated peace with parades, public gatherings, and a suspension of business. In 1938, the U.S. Congress passed a concurrent resolution that made every Nov. 11 a legal holiday. In 1954, after World War II and

the Korean Conflict, U.S. Congress amended the act to replace “Armistice” with “Veterans,” to be inclusive to all those who had served. The Veterans Affairs’ Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs states that Veterans Day is “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

Page 3

Fun Facts • Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day, celebrated in May every year; Memorial Day honors those servicemembers who died in action, or from their wounds sustained in action. Veterans Day honors all servicemembers for their service to their country. • “Lest We Forget,” a popular snippet from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Recessional,” symbolizes the plea to remember all lost servicemembers, to not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. • For a short period of time (ten years), the U.S. celebrated Veterans Day on the fourth Monday in October. The change proved unpopular, and the holiday reverted to its original date of November 11. • Many may notice that “Veterans Day” does not have an apostrophe; the VA states that “Veterans Day is not a day that belongs to veterans, it is a day for honoring veterans directly in front of us right now.” • Countries around the world celebrate their veterans annually, often under different names. Great Britain calls it “Remembrance Day,” and observes it the Sunday closest to Nov. 11; Canada and Australia also observe “Remembrance Day” on Nov. 11. Additionally, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain wear red poppy flowers on their lapel to recognize the war dead.

menting the most rapid expansion and diversification of its nuclear arsenal in its history. For this reason, and many others, the United States must remain at Lajes. The United States cannot afford to allow China to get a foothold in the North Atlantic.

U.S. Air Force Col. Brian Hardeman, the 65th Air Base Group commander, recently discussed his goals moving forward, as well as the appreciation he has for the Airmen who continue to propel Lajes Field forward as a strategic force enabling power projection. Q. What would you like your Airmen to know about you and your overall vision as the recently appointed commander of the 65th ABG? A. First, I want the members of the 65th Air Base Group to know that everyone has a voice and is critical to the mission. It does not matter whether you are military, civilian or local national, everyone is a valued and equal member of the team. Team 6-5 is charged to execute the mission, which is to enable power projection, assist transient and divert aircraft and support the Portuguese Air Force search and rescue mission. To execute the mission, we must remember the world and its threats are changing and we must change to stay ahead of those who wish to challenge us. What worked in the past may not in its entirety work for us today as our threats continue to evolve. Today’s military, with the help of our host nation partners, are here to innovate and accelerate toward a future where our countries and our partners can thrive under the security and strategic advantages airpower alone provides. I expect members of Team 6-5 to challenge the status quo and make necessary changes to keep us ahead of our threats. Secondly, I want to ensure every member of Team 6-5 has an opportunity to develop whether that is professionally or personally. I want to help my teammates reach their full potential — that is the only

way the Air Base Group will thrive. Everyone must recognize that resilience and diversity add to the power of Team 6-5. Finally, the United States, Portugal, and Spain have shared interests, a shared history, and most importantly a shared future. Our relationship is a symbol of trust and confidence. I am proud of our unique and special relationship, and I am proud of each and every one of the members in the 65th Air Base Group, which is why it is extremely important to continue to build upon and foster the exceptional relationships with our Portuguese and Spanish host nation partners. Q. What are your goals as the 65th ABG commander? A. To execute the mission, develop our Airmen, and to maintain exceptional relationships with our host nation partners. With linkages in our cultures, our prosperity, and our security, the quality and scope of cooperation between the United States, Portugal, and Spain is awesome and high. With shared interests, history, and most importantly a shared future, our robust security relationships are paramount to addressing an evolving security landscape and transnational threats. All three of these goals require teamwork and for the group to “fly” in one direction as a cohesive and integrated team. Q. With that in mind, what are your expectations for members of your team? A. I expect all members of Team 6-5 to be good teammates and treat each other, to include our Portuguese and Spanish host nation partners, with dignity and respect; there is no place within my group for anything less. I want Lajes Field and Morón Air Base to be awesome assignments and great places to work. That cannot hap-

pen if we do not value each other as teammates and treat each other with dignity and respect. These basic attributes are essential to our future success. Q. Your Airmen consistently maintain a high ops tempo. What can we do moving forward to prioritize and take care of the mental health of our subordinates, peers, and ourselves? A. Simple: watch and listen. People are creatures of habit, if someone seems “off,” unusually quiet, or something just does not seem right, say something. Ask the person how they are doing and if they are ok, but do not ignore it. Asking someone if they are all right or need to talk can make the difference in someone’s day or prevent something bad from potentially happening. The other aspect is to listen to people. People have the tendency to want to talk when they should just listen. I like to equate that to 80 percent listen, 20 percent talk. You would be amazed at how much you can help someone by just listening. Q. How is the mission at Lajes Field evolving? A. The mission at Lajes Field is evolving, we are reposturing for strategic competition. China is our primary national security threat and is the United States number one pacing challenge. China would like to possess Lajes due to its strategic location in the North Atlantic. The location of Lajes allows the airfield to act as a strategic projection platform which enables bombers and fighters to remain outside the threat ring, but close enough to support the European Deterrence Initiative and Middle East operations. The Azores is an important location, and the United States must hold on to it. Over the next 10 years, China is expected to double its nuclear stockpile while imple-

Q. What are some of the unique capabilities of Lajes? A. Lajes Field is a force enabler, which is a unique capability. Lajes provides the Air Force the ability to project power to maintain Air Superiority by enabling the ability to strike targets at range and generate sorties in support of Agile Combat Employment and Bomber Task Forces. Current and future operations at Lajes supports SecAF’s Operational Imperatives, specifically number five, Resilient Forward Basing, and number seven, Readiness to Mobilize, Deploy, and Fight. Again, the location of Lajes closes a capability gap in the Air Force’s ability to support operational plans in a contested environment, which is why the Air Force must increase its investment in funding and manpower to ensure Lajes is properly postured for the future fight. USAFs only military pier The military pier located in the town of Praia Da Vitória is a great location for the Navy to dock ships like Aegis cruisers, frigates, etc., after small capital investment. Navy ships docking in Terceira will deter China’s aspiration to build an Atlantic PRC fleet and thwart expansion in the region. The pier is also used to replenish the fuel storage tanks for Lajes. Largest fuel storage / ramp space in USAFE The strategic value of Lajes Field cannot be overstated. Out of all the bases in USAFE, Lajes has the largest ramp size and jet fuel storage

capacity compared to any other base in Europe. To put that in numbers, the ramp at Lajes is 21 percent of the total ramp size in square miles, and Lajes holds 48 percent of the total jet fuel storage capacity in gallons. Atlantic area control / homeland defense Lajes secures the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea Lines of Communication, which amplifies operational reach. By occupying Lajes, the United States maintains North Atlantic area dominance, which translates to the “high ground” of the Atlantic and provides the initial deterrence/defense to protect our homeland. Comms / satellite downlink coverage of the Mid-Atlantic Gap Lajes personnel maintain a High Frequency Global Communications System on Terceira Island. The HFGCS is used to communicate with aircraft in flight, ground stations, and some naval surface vessels. Common uses of the HFGCS are to place telephone calls, obtain weather, arrange refueling, and transmit Emergency Action Messages. Q. Are there any additional topics you would like to discuss? A. I would like to say it is an absolute pleasure to be your commander and I am proud to lead the 65th Air Base Group with my command team, squadron commanders, and senior enlisted leaders. I can honestly say there are few experiences more rewarding and humbling than command. The opportunity to lead the Air Force’s greatest resource, our Airmen, and work side-by-side with our host nation partners, is a task I do not take lightly, and I am truly honored. The group is composed of phenomenal humans who do awesome work to execute a demanding mission.

TALK OF THE TOWN: Union Community Winnweiler by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern or in the heart of the Palatinate Forest. Talk of the Town is a series highlighting the union communities within the County of Kaiserslautern, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Union Community of Winnweiler. The series aims to inform American service members and their families about the communities they’re joining during their time in the KMC. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages. Each month we will feature a different community and provide facts about its history, heritage, and the local experiences it offers. Our next stop will lead us to the Union Community of Winnweiler, located within Donnersberg County, the northern neighbor to Kaiserslautern County. The county seat is in Kirchheimbolanden and Winnweiler lies just south on the foot of Donnersberg mountain. We invite you to discover interesting and maybe not-so-well-known facts about your home away from home. The current Union Community of Winnweiler consists of the individual towns and villages of Börrstadt, Breunigweiler, Kreuzkapelle

Falkenstein, Gonbach, Höringen, Imsbach, Lohnsfeld, Münchweiler an der Alsenz, Schweisweiler, Sippersfeld, Steinbach am Donnersberg, Wartenberg-Rohrbach and Winnweiler as the administrative seat with its town sections Hochstein, Alsenbrück-Langmeil and Potzbach. The total union community has about 13,800 inhabitants and an additional 900 Kaiserslautern Military Community members also call it their home. Mayor Rudolf Jacob has been the Mayor of the Union Community since 2008 and would like to extend a warm welcome (see Page 7). Prisoners of war and a new settlement Most likely Winnweiler was founded in the second half of the 8th century. It was first officially mentioned on Feb. 10, 891 as the village “Winidowilan,” which can be translated to mean “the settlement of the Wenden.” The Wenden, a Slavik population group, was settled as prisoners of war by Charlemagne within his territory. In the 18th century Winnweiler was first seat of a Lorraine and later a Habsburg-Lorraine upper office for the County of Falkenstein. The castle was built in 1604 and demolished 200 years later, but the Chapel of the Cross, which can be seen from afar, is a reminiscence of the time and is a popular church for weddings. Additional information about the

castle is available at the museum in Winnweiler. A strategic military installation The Union Community of Winnweiler plays an important role in U.S. military history as well. After World War II, when Germany was divided into four occupational zones and Rheinland-Pfalz was in the French zone, the French began constructing an airfield. Upon heavy protest by local farmers, a compromise was agreed upon and one section of the newly constructed Sembach airfield was located in the County of Kaiserslautern. About one mile north the administrative area was developed on Heuberg, a sandy area of little agricultural value, however, located within Donnersberg County. Up until 1995 both sections were known as “Sembach Air Base,” home to the 86th Fighter Wing and 17th Air Force. The installation is now used by various U.S. Army units, such as a Military Police Brigade, a Medical Brigade, the United States Army Corrections Facility Europe, a small Navy intelligence unit and a recently activated Air Defense Artillery Brigade Headquarters. The post is now commonly referred to as “Sembach Kaserne.” Celts and Romans Celts and Romans were also fond of the valley surrounding the mountain and left numerous traces that can be seen and experienced. Over 2,000 years ago, Celtic ancestors

erected an impressive central city on the plateau of the mountain, referred to as an Oppidum. This Oppidum was the central hub in the Rhine River valley and is one of the largest Celtic settlements north of the Alps. Romans, on the other hand, built settlements and created clay products in neighboring Eisenberg and near the village of Katzenbach. Take a journey into history and experience the mystic and exciting world of the Donnersberg Celts and Romans! Keltendorf A visit to the Celtic village in Steinbach is like a fascinating journey into the mystical world of early inhabitants at Donnersberg. The small, reconstructed village is more than a museum, you can actually experience the culture of the Celts. Venture into a journey of the people who inhabited Donnersberg more than 2,000 years ago. Dwellings with wooden posts and semi-timbered structures, wooden shingles and facades made of clay, give realistic insight to the lives and times of the Celts. Visitors can try Celtic handcraft techniques such as felting, building arrows or creating beads out of clay. For more info, visit https:// www.donnersberg-touristik.de/de Falkenstein Castle Falkenstein Castle is first recorded in 1135 as the castle of the Lords of Falkenstein and is located just northwest of the

village of Imsbach. Around 1500 Uhland I acquired the castle rights and expanded it. His descendants then purchased a castle in Austria and settled there, leaving the structure to decompose. In 1674 it was besieged by French troops and eventually remained a ruin until it was partially restored after 1979 and is now used for medieval festivals and other festivities throughout the year, including a romantic Christmas market scheduled for Nov. 26 and 27 this year. The tiny town of Falkenstein with 220 inhabitants boasts two restaurants and a nostalgic, “timeless” café that offers homemade cake. Mining and Minerals The Pfälzische Bergbaumuseum (mining museum) in Imsbach invites you to experience over 2,000 years of mining in the area. You can learn all about ores, rocks, and fossil fuels of the region in the former schoolhouse in Imsbach, which now houses a museum. The occurrence, extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, and mercury are explained as well as the use of current stones and raw materials. The mineral display “Terra Crystallum” is new. You can experience historical mining in the “Weiße Grube” and “Grube Maria” (mine pits). English tours are also available. and a Jewish cemetery. The “Jüdisches Museum der Nordpfalz” gives valuable insight to the small Jewish community first mentioned in 1674. In 1901 a new synagogue was opened, but destroyed during the regime in the late 1930’s. A memorial plaque made out of sandstone with a carving is situated at the former site of the synagogue. A further place of interest in Schweisweiler is a small village museum “Leo’s Tenne”, which displays traditional handcraft professions such as stonemasons, roof tile makers, wagoners, hammersmiths and casters as well as household goods and devices. The venue can also be rented for events, concerts or gatherings. The adjacent farmhouse with a picturesque garden gives insight to the history of the village based on a selection of old photographs.

In addition, there are numerous dining opportunities in the individual villages, including a dart and billiard lounge in the town of Winnweiler. As in other traditional towns, Winnweiler has two annual festivals, the Johannismarkt in late June and Oktobermarkt in early October, a Christmas market is planned for Dec. 10 and 11 this year. In addition, each village has its individual village celebration during the summer months. Did you know that… • Up until recently, one of the few still family-owned breweries in Germany was located in Winnweiler? • Mark Forster, a popular German singer and songwriter was born and raised in Winnweiler? • The actual border line between Kaiserslautern County and Donnersberg County runs straight through the gate shack at Sembach Kaserne? • Donnersberg is the highest mountain in the Pfalz region with a peak of 687 meters (2,253 feet)? • The name Donnersberg (thunder mountain) is thought to refer to “Donar”, the Germanic god of thunder? A warm welcome to the Union Community of Winnweiler The Union Community of Winnweiler is often referred to the „gateway to Donnersberg“. Coming from the west it is an excellent starting point to dive into the beautiful and diverse Donnersberg landscape. And, it is worth it — the union community has a lot to offer: Breathtaking views into the distance and a fantastic vista onto the highest mountain in the Pfalz region, wild romantic and light flooded forests, impressive rock formations and geological findings, wide valleys with small streams that phase into the distance, fields and meadows, idyllic lakes and old county style villages. The Chapel of the Cross, which can be seen in the distance, the Schlossplatz and Lohnsbachaprk invite you along to a leisurely stroll through Winnweiler. A stop at the Jüdisches Museum or the Museum für Fotographiehandwerk or a climb up to Hochstein Kreuz with a fantastic view is definitely worth it. Winnweiler ia also the starting point of the Pfälzer Höhenweg and the Hinkelstein Wanderweg (both hiking routes) and I’m personally pleased about the re-opening of our completely renovated swimming pool. Further excursions will take you to the Keltendorf in Steinbach, Castle Falkenstein and the Bergbau-

erlebniswelt Imsbach, symbolic for various ages of our history. Children will adore a train ride with the Gartenbahn in Börrstadt. My favorite place? I admit, it is difficult with this multitude of choice, but I love to walk around the Oberes Pfrimmtal. Around Sippersfelder Weiher relaxing, shady forest paths, fresh air and clear water invite you to „refuel“. And, last but not least, experience Pfälzer hospitality! Is there anything better than rounding off a day after hiking or biking with a cool drink and an excellent dish together with a group of nice people? We look forward to your visit and cordially invite our Kaiserslautern American members to join in our village life and experience our union community at its best! Sincerely,

Rudolf Jacob Union Community Mayor

Noble Skywave: Global radio contest

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron adjust antenna mast guy wires during Noble Skywave at U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder, Oct. 26. Military units from every corner of the globe participated in Noble Skywave, a contest to see which unit could operate a high frequency radio station the most effectively.

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron participate in Noble Skywave at U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder, Oct. 26. Noble Skywave is a contest set in an environment where the participants must use high-frequency radio technology to contact other military unit radio stations around the globe and whoever contacts the most takes first place.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Military units from across the world participated in Noble Skywave, a global cyber contest, at U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder, from Oct. 26 to 27. Noble Skywave is a multinational high-frequency radio contest hosted by the Canadian Armed Forces. This year’s competition brought together 429 military units from across 13 nations who compete to determine who can most efficiently utilize high-frequency radio technology. Each team was placed into one of three categories based on the amount of transmitting power their radio station has. Teams worked together to set up a fully functioning radio station and utilized their skills to connect with other radio stations, some being thousands of miles away, during the contest. “There is a set number of stations playing in this contest, and our objective is to contact as many of them as possible,” said Airman

1st Class Matthew Recchia, 1st Combat Communication Squadron cyber infrastructure technician. “Whoever contacts the most stations, wins.” High-frequency radio technology and its operators are crucial to the U.S. military, Allies and partners as it is not reliant on conventional ways of communications technology, such as satellites or cell phone towers which are vulnerable to weather conditions or an attack from an adversary. If conventional ways of communication were to ever go down or become inoperable, that is where high-frequency radio comes in. The technology works by bouncing radio waves off of the ionosphere, a layer in the atmosphere that is electrically charged by the sun, allowing communication between people that are a vast distance apart. “Last year, our farthest link was 11,700 kilometers away,” said Senior Airman Kelley Jay, 1st CBCS radio frequency transmission systems technician. “We communicated with a radio station in Peru from Germany by using this radio technology.” In this year’s competition, the

longest connection the 1st CBCS made was with New Zealand, at approximately 18,000 kilometers away. Most importantly, by using high-frequency technology, one can send documents, emails, orders or anything else needed to ensure mission success. Though it is a contest, Noble Skywave provides the opportunity for military partners to come together to enhance their skills for a common goal of defending the NATO Alliance. “The purpose of the contest is to keep our high-frequency radio skills sharp,” Jay said. “But, it also ensures the international communications community is interoperable and ready to respond effectively if the need arises.” U.S. forces in Europe live, train and operate with Allies and partners from strategic locations across the continent to ensure a timely and coordinated response during peacetime and crisis. Within their category, 1st CBCS came in third place with a total of 200 connections made with other radio stations around the world using high-frequency radio.

LRMC hosts joint mass casualty exercise Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron along with U.S. Army Soldiers, U.S Air Force Airmen and staff assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center participated in a joint-force mass casualty exercise at LRMC, Nov. 2. The exercise tested responsiveness to transport, triage and treatment of patients as well as LRMC’s bed expansion capabilities. The 86th AES works in tandem with the LRMC team by evacuating injured, deployed service members and treating them in-air. The patients are brought to Ramstein Air Base, and quickly transported to LRMC, which is strategically located nearby. At LRMC, medical teams work quickly to stabilize patients. Once stabilized, they are flown back to the U.S. for further medical care. The exercise included executing LRMC’s emergency management plan to respond to a mass casualty situation, integrating response operations and components to the Regional Trauma Network, and effectively communicating — both internally and externally — at all levels. “This is monumental,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Noe Muniz, LRMC Commander’s Initiative Group chief. “Within the hierarchy of the multifaceted healthcare system, we have our leaders in the emergency room and the emergency operations center working on mission control. It is critical everybody is able to act and think decisively so our medics are able to do their jobs effectively.”

The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron along with U.S. Army Soldiers, U.S. Air Force Airmen and staff assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and triage patients at LRMC, Nov. 2. Exercises like these are important to evaluate the U.S. military’s strategic medical skills and improve processes.

As the largest American military hospital outside of the U.S., LRMC serves as an evacuation and treatment center for all deployed U.S. service members and civilians. The exercise simulated a flight evacuating patients to Ramstein, using actors and mannequins, and rapidly delivering them to LRMC

on an ambulatory bus, said U.S. Air Force Capt. Mike Burton, 86th AES flight nurse. After patients were triaged, they were brought to the appropriate hospital department for further treatment. Medical teams were tested on life-saving procedures, such as placing chest tubes, arterial lines

bilities. Inspectors observed the exercise and took note of ways to improve response in the event of a real-world mass casualty situation.

US, UK explore interoperable, battlefield-ready 3D printing capabilities by Maureena Thompson Army Futures Command CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Warfighters from all branches of service and allied nations will need to work together closely on future battlefields to outwit and outperform adversaries. As the U.S. military and its partners take strategic steps to expand interoperability in theater, they are also evaluating how to maximize operational dexterity — including through the clever use of advanced manufacturing. Encompassing everything from 3D printing to robotics, advanced manufacturing harnesses innovative technologies to improve traditional processes. The military’s application of advanced manufacturing in operational environments offers warfighters the ability to fix issues and make repairs on location and on demand, without needing to wait hours or days for key parts to arrive. At Project Convergence 22, a U.S.-hosted all-service and multinational experiment designed to improve future force interoperability and readiness, U.S. and U.K. forces are assessing how they can strengthen interforce support through collaborative advanced manufacturing activities. “It’s enjoyable, the integration,” said British Army officer Maj. Alex Shand of the experience. As part of PC22 experimentation, Shand and his colleagues were able to successfully print — for the first time ever — U.S. Army materiel replacement parts using a British Army 3D printer. Craftsman Olivier Hankins experiments with extended reality goggles and 3D printing capabilities. This functionality is important because it shows how a multinational partner could potentially

assist the U.S. military in making rapid equipment repairs on the battlefield, Shand explained. The increased flexibility could prove beneficial if a nearby unit lacked a 3D printer, for example, or if supply chain disruptions were preventing the timely delivery of missing parts. Aiding the ability of warfighters to execute on-the-ground repairs is the British Army’s development of extended reality goggles. The high-tech goggles can be worn by an individual tasked with making repairs and synchronized virtually with relevant subject matter experts. These experts can then

view what the individual on the ground sees and offer detailed instructions on how to tackle complex repairs, including by sending files, drawing overlay pictures, or rendering 3D models. While the technology is still in initial phases of development and has yet to be ruggedized for field use, its pairing with 3D printing capabilities and evaluation at PC22 shows promise for the future, offering what Shand described as “an understanding of the right mix of technologies and skills to conduct repair by repair on the battlefield as a joint force.”

Cyber awareness starts with the people

U.S. Army Lt. Phillip Prater, information security system manager, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, speaks to 21st TSC members about cybersecurity topics such as phishing, network policy violations and spam at Panzer Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Oct. 19. October was Cyber Awareness Month and this year’s theme was “See Yourself in Cyber.” The 21st TSC’s G6 cybersecurity branch took it upon themselves to push cyber awareness through multiple outlets. Prater and the G6 team created a campaign, briefed senior leaders and hosted eight discussions to reach the people and encourage them to make smart decisions at home and at work. “We’re trying to build a bridge between us and the actual community here on Panzer Kaserne,” said Prater. Saltzman formally elevated to Space Force’s highest position – Chief of Space Operations by Charles Pope Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Pledging to build on the Space Force’s achievements while also infusing the nascent service with new approaches, Gen. B. Chance Saltzman was officially installed Nov. 2 as Chief of Space Operations, the service’s highest-ranking military post, and only the second person to hold the position in the Space Force’s history. In remarks during a solemn “Change of Responsibility” ceremony, in which he was elevated to the job from retiring CSO, Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, Saltzman promised to “work relentlessly to make the Space Force the combatready force that our nation needs” while acknowledging it “will not be an easy or short-lived task.” Saltzman praised Raymond for doing “the heavy lifting to establish the Space Force,” for being a mentor, and for setting the Space Force on a path on which Saltzman can build. He also thanked his wife Jennifer, his two children, and a long list of other unnamed friends and colleagues who he said comprised the “bedrock of support” across his career. “My goal will be to provide you the resources, tools, training and experiences you need to unlock your massive potential,” he said, referring to the cadre of nearly 15,000 Guardians and civilians who currently comprise the Space Force. Saltzman said he would rely on them to continue building the Space Force and ensuring that it succeeds. “You have my commitment that I will work relentlessly to make the Space Force the combat-ready force that our nation needs, so get ready because I’m going to need your best as well,” he said. In addition to Raymond, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Secretary of the Air Force passes the flag to Gen. B. Chance Saltzman as he assumes command of the U.S. Space Force during the transition ceremony for the chief of space operations at Joint Base Andrews, Md., Nov. 2. Saltzman relieved Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond as the second CSO, the senior uniformed officer heading the Space Force. Photos by Andy Morataya

Gen. Mark Milley, and Department of the Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall took part in the ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris offered a letter praising Saltzman’s selection and Raymond’s service. As CSO, Saltzman will join Milley and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In his remarks, Austin praised Raymond’s service and his work guiding the Space Force since its creation. He called Saltzman a worthy and capable successor. “There is no one better to take the helm than General Chance Saltzman. … For the past two years, he’s helped this new service get off the ground as a Deputy Chief of Space Operations. So, we’re lucky to have General Saltzman take the colors today.” Saltzman’s job as CSO will be ensuring that the nearly 3-yearold Space Force continues develop-

ing and successfully achieving its broad and crucial missions. In that respect, he is well prepared. But Saltzman noted in his remarks that the stakes are high. “The world is becoming increasingly dangerous, and preserving U.S. national security interests in space is growing harder every day,” he said. “Without the space capabilities you are designing, building, protecting, and operating, the Joint Force will not be capable of accomplishing its missions. A resilient, ready, and combat-credible Space Force is indispensable to deterrence today, tomorrow, and every day after that. In the worst case, if deterrence fails, the Space Force will be an indispensable component of our joint force at war.” Since August 2020, Saltzman has served as Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Operations, Cyber,

and Nuclear. In this role, Saltzman has overall responsibility for operations, intelligence, sustainment, cyber, and nuclear operations for the Space Force. Commissioned in 1991 after graduating from Boston University, he has deep operational experience with missile and space systems as a Minuteman III launch officer and as a satellite operator for the National Reconnaissance Office. He also served as the first Chief of Combat Plans for the Joint Space Operations Center and, later, as Chief of Combat Operations. Despite its small size compared to the other military services, the Space Force’s strategic importance is beyond dispute. Saltzman pledged to build on Raymond’s accomplishments. “The inspired work that General Raymond started has set us on a path,” Saltzman told the Senate

Armed Services Committee Sept. 13 during his confirmation hearing. “It is a path towards advanced capabilities, modern, resilient architectures, and innovative approaches to meet our service missions.” Saltzman inherits a Space Force as it transitions from the early planning and organizational phases required to form the first new military branch since 1947 to one that focuses more on the Department of the Air Force’s operational imperatives. Milley used his remarks to highlight Raymond’s service, to thank him for his 38-year career and occasionally poke good-natured fun at him. Turning serious, however, Milley said Raymond “paved the way and is very much a pioneer” in the United States’ journey into space. Space is now considered a new and indisputable “warfighting domain,” which is why the United States — primarily through the Space Force and its allies, is focusing heavily on space and adapting to the new conditions. Militarily, space has never been more essential since “space power” provides a series of foundational capabilities upon which our joint forces depend. It wasn’t long ago when space was an exclusive club, limited almost entirely to the United States and Russia (and before that, the Soviet Union). With only two “players” roaming the vast reaches of space, it was considered a challenging but peaceful environment. There are now 72 countries actively operating in space. That number is growing as the cost of launching vehicles into space is falling to the point that more nations, along with many commercial enterprises, are jumping in. As congestion in space increases, so too are the intentions for being there. All of that raises the stakes for operating freely and without threat in space.

What does vitamin b do for me? Much more than you think

by Janet A. Aker Medical Health System Communications Meet the vitamin B team. These vitamins are the key players that help convert your food and drink into energy to keep your brain and body going. “All your B vitamins equal energy,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Michael Kantar, a dietitian who heads the Nutrition Management Department at Naval Hospital Camp Pendletongoes to the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton website in California. “It's not as if you take the vitamin and you have energy,” he added. “Rather, your B vitamins are the assistant to your metabolism to break down energy from the foods you eat.” Your metabolism is the process of chemical changes to make energy cells needed to grow, reproduce, repair, and stay healthy. The metabolic process also helps get rid of toxins. How essential are B vitamins? It’s the biggest reason ever. “The most important benefit of the B vitamins is life — they are essential to all persons, and any deficiency can cause serious health problems,” said Patricia Deuster, who holds a doctorate in nutritional sciences and is acting executive director of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences’ Consortium for Health and Military Performance . What are B vitamins and how can you get them? Consisting of eight different essential nutrients, each B vitamin has specific func-

tions as explained by the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health: • thiamin (B-1) • riboflavin (B-2) • niacin (B-3) • pantothenic acid (B-5) • pyridoxine/pyridoxal (B-6) • biotin (B-7) • folate (B-9) • cobalamin (B-12) Your body cannot produce B vitamins on its own to support proper metabolism, so it is important you eat a well-balanced diet. No one food provides all of the B vitamins. To maximize your intake of B vitamins without taking dietary supplements, you should select a variety of non-processed foods. Current nutrition science says you should aim for a varied diet that consists of whole grains, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins (beef, pork, poultry, and fish). Eggs and dairy products are a good source of at least four B vitamins. Many types of cereals and baked goods are enriched so, although processed, they provide many of the B vitamins. One super B vitamin food is perhaps something your parents may have tried to get you to eat as a child–with varying success. “Believe it or not, one food high in many of the B vitamins is beef liver,” Deuster said. For meatless eaters If you’re a vegan or a vegetarian, you should be able to get your B vitamins easily

in the food and drink you consume, provided you are choosing a variety of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. The exception is vitamin B-12, which is naturally found in animal foods. For those strictly meatless eaters who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has cautioned that their babies might not get enough vitamin B-12, and the mothers should be counseled about taking a B-12 supplement. Vitamin B-12 a key player Vitamin B-12 is needed to form red blood cells and DNA. It is also crucial in the function and development of brain and nerve cells. To ensure you’re getting enough vitamin B-12 — even if you eat meat or animal-based foods — try consuming fortified plant-based foods such as plant-based milks, including soy and almond milks, said USU assistant professor Jonathan Scott, a registered dietitian who holds a doctorate in health and rehabilitation sciences. Other non-animal-based foods rich in vitamin B-12 include: • Nutritional yeast and yeast spreads • Tempeh, a fermented soy-bean cake • Tofu • Cremini mushrooms • Plant-based “meats” • Nori seaweed Additionally, as you age, you are able to absorb less B-12 from your diet. You should consider adding a vitamin supplement, Deuster suggested.

Vitamin B-6 on defense Vitamin B-6 also serves many key roles in keeping your body healthy and would benefit from more research, Scott said. “It is involved in over 160 biochemical reactions related to carbohydrate, fat, amino acid, and nucleic acid metabolism. The vitamin also serves as a signal for cells, acts as an antioxidant, participates in the functioning of the immune system, and more,” he explained. Foods richest in vitamin B-6 include: • Organ meats, such as beef liver • Chickpeas • Tuna • Salmon • Poultry • Potatoes • Fortified cereals Resources Check how well you are feeding your brain and body: • The CHAMP Human Performance Resources’ Warfighter Nutrition Guide helps warfighters learn to fuel their daily performance nutrition needs at https://www.hprc-online.org/nutrition/ warfighter-nutrition-guide. • U.S. Department of Agriculture’s My Plate program discusses how to build a healthy plate and a pattern of healthy eating at https://www.myplate.gov/. • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 edition, provides nutrition information for all age groups at https://www. dietaryguidelines.gov/.

Volkstrauertag — Day of National Mourning by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In Germany the National Day of Mourning is always celebrated on the 33rd Sunday of the year. In 2022 it will be observed on Nov. 13. The Sunday is observed in commemoration of members of the armed forces of all nations and civilians who died in armed conflicts. It was first observed in 1952 and recently also includes

any victims of violent oppression and acts of terrorism. By tradition, speeches to tribute the service men and civilian victims are held at ceremonies in cemeteries within the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Leading representatives of the United States Air Force and Army are invited to lay wreaths together with local German officials and military counterparts. Story and photo by German American Community Office In 2021, Germany altered its traffic laws and also implemented a few new traffic signs. You may have spotted it somewhere, but many drivers are not familiar with this new sign. The sign with a white back-

ground and a black frame under the blue parking symbol depicts four people, two females and two males, as well as a car separated into two parts. It means that only official car sharing vehicles may park there. This does not apply to any private car sharing or pooling initiatives. If you park there, you can face a

€55 fine and might also be towed, resulting in additional expenses. Another sign saying “Carsharing frei” (free) underneath a no parking sign, allows car sharing vehicles to park there.

LISBON from Page 1 ping, and beautiful views. For many, Lisbon in December is love at first sight. From the airport, taxis plunge toward the city’s heart. Tangerine sunsets transform palm trees to black silhouettes while evening lights blink to life. Clean shopfronts gleam with tile, textile, soccer jerseys, gelato counters, kebap stands and a thousand other wondrous things. Lisbon during the holidays In central Lisbon, the towering white columns of the famous National Theatre sparkle with Christmas lights. Across the street, in Rossio Square, a ginger-scented cluster of wooden huts and temporary pines reveals Lisbon’s annual Christmas market. It may not be as vast as some of those in central Europe, but it’s still pretty awesome: the booths offer candy, hot drinks, Portuguese artwork, and dozens of other things that make for great gifts or souvenirs. Lisbon also holds a remarkable Rossio square

blend of history, music, art, and culture. Crowds are scarce, prices are reasonable, the wine is bold, children are welcomed, English is widely spoken, and the desserts are sublime. And in terms of doing cool stuff? You’ve got options. Incredible buildings abound. The Castelo de São Jorge towers above Lisbon, is brilliantly lighted at night, and allows you to share space with strutting peacocks while surveying the city and harbor. The small town of Sintra is a short train ride outside of Lisbon, and is absolutely worth a day trip to visit the colorful Palácio da Pena and famous thousand-year-old Castelo dos Mourous. Walkable Lisbon Lisbon is also one of the most walkable cities in Europe, and has a variety of fascinating neighborhoods. Wandering the Alfama district — which is a maze of medieval alleys, fado bars, restaurants, and orange trees growing out of stone walkways — is like stepping into the age of explorers. trast to the nearby Baixa district, where wide boulevards contain chic shops and fine restaurants. If you want history, the Gulbenkian Museum houses a comprehensive and accessible collection that stretches from ancient Greece to the twentieth century. Or you can wander through Jerónimos Monastery and wind past tourists snapping photos of psychadelic stained glass until you reach Vasco da Gama’s tomb. As with many other places in Lisbon, you can stand face-to-face with the past and marvel at its resonance with the present. Though Lisbon in winter can be rainy, visitors can also be treated to a week’s worth of sun and warmth. When the sun’s out, you get the crisp, clean smell of a sunny winter morning somewhere warm, like southern California or Florida. Winter in Europe rarely gets this good. Four Lisbon essentials 1. assistance. Though English is widely spoken, leading with the local language is a helpful practice. 2. Viva Viagem card: If you’re planning to be in Lisbon without a car for more than a day or two, consider getting this public transportation pass. It is reloadable, and allows access to Lisbon’s excellent system of trains, buses, subways, and trolleys. Learn more at www.metrolisboa.pt/en/buy/ viva-viagem-card. 3. Fado: Literally meaning “destiny” or “fate,” fado is a sparse, beautifully melancholy form of traditional Portuguese music that has roots in lamenting sailors lost at sea. Live music can be found in fado bars abound in Lisbon, which are well worth a visit. 4. Pastéis de Belém: Before you visit Jéronimos Monastery, stop at this world-famous eatery and enjoy a freshly-made pastel de Belém (or three). Your soul (and stomach) will thank you for it. DRAMA

Black Adam (2022)

Till (2022)

In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and Black Adam has gone from man to myth to legend. Now free, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern-day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone.

Till is a profoundly emotional and cinematic film about the true story of Mamie TillMobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14 year old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. In Mamie’s poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.
