These fluffy, soft and exotic party favourites are quick to make, moist and offer just a hint of Caribbean flair during gloomy December afternoons.
Ingredients:

200 grams shredded coconut 250 grams powdered sugar 200 grams marzipan 2 tablespoons rum 5 egg whites juice of 1/2 lemon optional: oblaten (a type of paper-thin wafer)

Germans love Christmas cookies so much that they designated an entire word to it: “Plätzchen.“ This means if you’re looking for cookies anytime between January and October, they’re “Kekse” but as soon as the first lights are put up, they will all be replaced by the seasonal
Instructions: Beat egg whites until stiff. Mix all ingredients and fold in egg whites. Use a piping bag or spoon to form walnut-sized drops (either on baking sheet or oblaten). Bake at 360°F / 180°C for 20 minutes. If you like, you can partly coat them with melted chocolate.
“Plätzchen.” Yes, even if the dough is technically the same all year round. No matter what you call them, I love myself some Santashaped, sugar-coated carbs. So let’s put on some Michael Bublé and

It doesn’t get more simple or classic than this one. Prepare the dough in advance and take it out of the fridge whenever you’re ready to make sure it’s firm and doesn’t crumble when you roll it out.
Ingredients:
250 grams butter 250 grams sugar 1 packet vanilla sugar 6 egg yolks 500 grams sifted flour
Instructions:
Mix and knead all ingredients. Roll out thinly. Cut into any shape your cookie cutter allows. Bake at 320°F / 160°C for 15 minutes. Get creative with icing, toppings and other sorts of decoration.

enjoy these three classic German cookie recipes.
This is my great grandmother’s recipe and the embodiment of my childhood as we spent countless afternoons making and eating these. The original recipe could feed (and did feed) an entire extended family so I cut it in half but you might still want to store some of the dough in a dark cool place until you’ve run out of the previous batch.
Ingredients:
250 grams honey 250 grams sugar 125 millilitres water 7 grams potash 7 grams salt of hartshorn 100 grams raisins 100 grams almonds or hazelnuts 50 grams candied orange peel 50 grams candied lemon peel 750 g flour 7 grams cinnamon 2 grams ground cloves 25 grams cacao 2 eggs
Instructions:
Bring honey, sugar and butter to a simmer. Dissolve potash and hartshorn salt in water by shaking it in the empty honey glass. Grind raisins, nuts, candied lemon- and orange peel in a food processor. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl before adding the remaining ingredients along with the eggs and knead well. Let sit for at least one night. Bake at 360°F / 180°C for 5-6 minutes. Glaze with lemon juice and powdered sugar.

Apple and cinnamon will warm your heart on gloomy afternoons while the rum adds just a hint of beachy sunshine to your cup. • 1 bottle of dry white wine of choice • 13 ounces strong apple tea • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, sliced • 1 organic orange, sliced • 1-2 ounces brown rum • 3 tablespoons honey • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 apple, thinly sliced (add just before reheating)

So prepare yourself for the sweet scent of gingerbread to seep through romantic alleys of fairylit historic towns as wooden booths offer culinary delights such as waffles, sausages and roasted nuts along with cookware, clothes, handmade gifts and much more. Nate Cairney Contributing writer With savage coasts, beautiful beaches, fantastic hikes, yearround golf, hearty food, and the possibility of seeing the northern lights, Donegal is especially great in autumn and winter. As a bonus: You might not find any other tourists while you’re there. For a small-ish island, Ireland has a ton of diversity. Dublin is cosmopolitan city rich with history and entertainment. The southwest coast of Ireland is famous for its cliffs and rugged peninsulas. You can visit the U.K. by traveling to Northern Ireland. But some of the best Irish experiences of all can be had in the the Republic of Ireland’s northernmost county: Donegal.
Inishowen: Rugged beauty Inishowen is the shark-head shaped eastern peninsula of Donegal, and it is packed with wild beauty and opportunities for adventure. Malin Head, which is the northernmost point of Ireland, is the perfect example. Hiking trails wind along sheer cliffs that plunge into a churning sea. On many days, visitors can see basking sharks, whales,

or dolphins in the water. Perhaps because the wind is so strong, Malin Head is also one of Donegal’s most consistently sunny places, which means outstanding views all year long. For Star Wars fans, Malin Head was also used as a filming location for The Last Jedi. Visitors to Inishowen will also be amazed at the variety of spectacular beaches. Known as ‘strands,’ most possess a breathtaking mix of scalable rocks and sandy beaches. In northern Inishowen, Five Finger Strand sits beneath massive sandy dunes not far from Malin Head. Kinnagoe is a gorgeous beach on the eastern coast, which looks across the water toward Islay and the Hebrides in Scotland. Tullagh Strand, near Clonmany, is gorgeous. And Pollan Strand, near Ballyliffin, is one of the best places in Ireland to spot the aurora borealis in late autumn and winter. Outdoor enthusiasts can’t go wrong in Donegal. Hiking opportunities are everywhere. Golfers will also find what they’re looking for at the Ballyliffin Golf Club. And, of course, Irish pubs will treat any visitor right.

Whipping Atlantic winds cause roiling waters, churning sea foam, and massive waves that smash magnificently against the rocks.

BAKING WITH YOUR CHILD

DEVELOPMENTAL BENEFITS For gobble gobble and ho ho ho! The holiday season is upon us and you know what that means! Time to pack on the holiday pounds with baked goods galore! Why not make the experience of baking your holiday goodies a developmentally beneficial one for your child? Aside from noshing on some delicious bites, here are some bonus benefits of baking. Heavy work. Shopping at the grocery store is an ideal motor warm up for your child. Let them push the cart, pass you the flour sugar and other items from the lower shelves, help carry bags if appropriate, help unload the car, and help unload purchased ingredients and put them on the counter in preparation for baking. By using our big muscle groups, we enrich a child sense of readiness for learning as well as overall motor coordination. Sensory input. Even your littlest child can participate in bak-
ing by experiencing the sensory aspects of this activity. For example, you can let a baby hit the bowl with a wooden spoon to make a drum, swirl some flour on their highchair tray or simply smell the different items such as the vanilla, sugar and butter. Sequencing skills. Schoolage children can beef up their awareness of sequencing by baking. This means first understanding the steps and then executing the steps. You can simplify recipes by just using single words or drawing pictures in advance. Older children can print out the directions, read them aloud and cross them off when completed. Math skills. I am not going to act like I am good at math, but I sure understand one needs a basic understanding for successful baking. You can challenge your older
children by taking out all of the measuring cups, jars, spoons and asking them to problem solve how many of the quarter cups would you need for a whole cup of sugar, or how many teaspoons you would need for a tablespoon. Older children can even work on division — e.g. the bag of flour is 500 grams, what percentage do we need to get 300 grams. Bilateral integration. 50 cent phrase alert! This simply means using both hands together in a coordinated manner. All children can improve upon this skill through the baking process. For example holding a box of sugar with one hand and pouring it into a measuring cup in the other hand. Little ones can take a glob of dough and roll it with a rolling pin. You can even have them roll the dough into a snake and prac-
tice cutting little pieces with scissors or a butter knife. Who cares if you use that glob of dough? It is just a fun way for them to participate in the activity. Safety awareness. You can use kitchen time as an opportunity to teach or reinforce safety skills. For example, you can have a little child tell you what is a no no in the kitchen: Touching the stove, opening the refrigerator, touching knives, etc. Older children can learn about more sophisticated safety topics, such as how to safely use a toaster, how to avoid having appliances near water, the safest way to hold a knife, etc. Social communication skills. Another very important bonus to engaging in a functional activity with your child is the way it naturally lends itself to open communication. When we are doing
some thing with our hands, we are more able to share our emotions, express our thoughts and to communicate in a back-and-forth manner. Your teenager may open up about a new crush or your fourth grader may share some anxiety about performing the school play. It doesn’t matter if you are baking bread, making a pie, or even busting out a roll of ready bake cookie dough. What matters is spending quality time with your child by doing a functional and festive activity together. Wishing you a happy kick off to the holiday season! WINTER FOREST HIKING
TIME FOR ADVENTURES For my fellow hikers who enjoyed the great outdoors trekking during the warmer months of the year, there is no need to put away those boots and let Old Man Winter keep you indoors until spring of next year.
Winter hiking and snowshoeing are excellent activities for those of you who are not into skiing or snowboarding and want to keep up your fitness levels while checking out amazing scenery, tasting schnapps and local food specialties along the way, visiting landmarks, and seeing a variety of wildlife and plants that thrive throughout the winter months. Below are four routes for you to start enjoying nature in the colder months. Gipfelrauschen Hike This hike begins at the Hunsrueckhaus located next to the Erbeskopf ski slope. The clearly marked trails lead you through dense spruce and fir forest areas with a variety of wide open spaces to narrow footpaths and nature preservation areas. It then takes a few upward spiral turns and drops back into a valley path that leads you to the Gipfel (peak) platform which is the highest point in the region. From the Gipfel you have a view of the hills, valleys, and villages for several kilometers in every direction. The path from the Gipfel leads you down to your start point at the Hunsrueckhaus where you can recharge and warm up with an amazing soup of the day, local schnapps, local food specialties, and visit the nature museum and souvenir shop. • Start point: Hunsrueck haus am Erbeskopf, 54411 Deuselbach • Distance: 7.5 km • Time estimate: 3 h ours • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Various flat and steep areas • Difficulty Rating: Moderate to difficult. Wind, Wasser & Wacken Hike The Wind, Water, and Rock trail is an excellent environmental education hike for adults, school groups, and anyone who wants to get out and enjoy a day crossing streams, meadows, and trekking along thick forest paths in the Hardtwald forest near Thalfang. The theme is climate protection, energy conservation through the use of wind and water power in the region, and also focuses on geology. Along the way you encounter windmills, underground springs, mineral wells, a dark narrow oak forest area, and the Berger Wacken geological area. All areas have informational signs posted, and there are a variety of rest stops along the way for a picnic lunch and snacks. Just below the start point in the village of Thalfang you will find a variety of restaurants and cafes to enjoy local food and drink specialties, as well as grocery stores and shops just in case you forgot to pack something for your day out on the trail. • Start point: Wanderpark platz, “Hunsrücker Windweg,” junction K77 / K76, 54426 Heidenburg / Berglicht • Distance: 10.1 km • Time estimate: 3 ½ Hours • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Wide open meadows, narrow trails, creek crossings, dense forest • Difficulty Rating: Easy to moderate. However, there are many adventures just minutes away from post and the housing areas. The Baerenbachfad (bear stream path) hiking trail takes you on a very quiet and peaceful journey by streams, rock formations, waterfalls, through meadows, fields, and forest areas with amaz-
ing panoramic views. Take advantage of the many rest stops along the trail for a picnic lunch or to get a glimpse of the many inhabitants of this well-preserved forest region. The old town of Baumholder has a variety of small cafes and restaurants where you can find local specialties as well as American, Italian, and Asian restaurants. • Start point: Am Weiherdamm 1, 55774 Baumholder • Distance: 14 km • Time estimate: 4.5 hours • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Excellent • Difficulty Rating: Moderate, not stroller or small child friendly • Detailed info: www.baumholder.de Feldberg Although I’ve been snowboarding and skiing for many years, snowshoeing is a way for me to mix up my activities while avoiding crowded slopes, long ticket and lift lines, and hauling a bunch of equipment around. This very popular sport does not require hours of lessons, is very easy to learn, has a low injury risk factor, is inexpensive, and a great way to relieve stress, the winter blues, burn excess holiday calo-
ries, and spend quality family time outdoors. One of my favorite snowshoe adventures start at the House of Nature adjacent to the Feldberg ski lift. All trails are clearly marked, and you can get a trail map for free or hire a guide for an additional fee. Although some of the trails can be a bit challenging while trekking through deep snow, it is worth the extra effort to experience the panoramic views, crisp mountain air, and taking a break at one of many mountain huts and lodges to relax and recharge. They offer the best local specialties that include Black Forest smoked ham, sausages, cake, cherry schnapps, beer and wine. Some of them also have overnight accommodations.
The House of Nature in Feldberg offers regular guided snowshoe tours as well as snowshoe rental. Based on snow conditions, tours are provided every Sunday from December till March at noon. • Start point: Haus der Natur, Dr. Pilet Spur 1, 79868 Feldberg • Distance: 12.5 km • Time estimate: 5 hours • Experience: Excellent • Terrain: Deep snow and slippery at places • Difficulty Rating: Moderate to difficult. What to bring: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots, gaiters to keep snow out of your footwear, all-weather clothing that includes layers, water, snacks, first aid kit, toilet paper, sunscreen, phone or GPS and Euro. Most remote huts and rest areas do not accept plastic. Dos and Don’ts: • Stay on the trails to avoid disturbing wildlife and eco systems. • Keep your pets in control and clean up after them. • Take frequent breaks based on your ability level. • Research and rent snowshoes before purchasing them. • Constantly check weather conditions and know where to go for shelter.

DOGS LOVE GOING ON WALKS! by Marion Velten professional dog trainer, contributing writer
Living with a pet, particularly a dog, is an enrichment for everyone who loves animals. But, as with all kinds of pets, the most important thing before taking a dog into your home, is making sure that you will be able to satisfy all the new family member’s needs. Dogs are very sensitive and social individuals. One of the most important you need to provide is enough exercise by taking it out on walks. Some people may think that a dog is satisfied with playing in the yard or dog park but walks are not only crucial for its physical health, they also allow them to see new things, discover all kinds of distractions, get used to regularly seeing foreign people, socialize with other dogs, get used to traffic and noises of daily life. A healthy, adult dog needs at least 2 hours of walking per day. For puppies, it is a little different. Their bones and joints are still fragile and soft. For them, the average is 1
minute of walking per week of age. This means an 11 week-old puppy should not be walked more than 11-15 minutes at once. There are wonderful places in and around Germany where dogs can run freely and off the leash. And your dog is not the only one who will benefit from the walks: going out into nature, breathing fresh air, exercising and meeting new people is just as healthy for us humans. A lot of German citizens speak English and encountering fellow dog owners often leads to new friendships. Taking your dog on walks means that your furry friend needs to be well-trained: it should not pull on the leash, bark at peo-
ple or other dogs. Those are very important skills, which your dog should learn quickly. Otherwise walks can be more than frustrating for the both of you. Once your dog has learned to behave outside, you will see how refreshing and relaxing a dog walk can be. It will come home, exhausted and satisfied, happy to simply lie down and take a nap for the next 2 or 3 hours, dreaming of all the exiting things he has just encountered. And believe me, you will feel the same. Nothing better than a good walk in fresh air! During the winter months you might lack the motivation to go out and may consider cutting your
usual routes short once the days do the same. However, winter walks come with a number of health benefits and should not be underestimated, not to mention the fact that your dog does not care about the weather and still needs his daily workout. Once you’ve given your body a few minutes to adjust to the cold, nothing but good things will follow. Any form of exercise, no matter the pace, increases your overall energy for the rest of the day while simultaneously helping you sleep better and longer at night. Vitamin D is crucial to your bones’ health by supporting your body in absorbing calcium and noticeably boosts your mood as
it functions like a natural antidepressant. Unplugging for as little as one hour each day can help reduce stress and feelings of anxiety as well as inspiring you to enjoy the beauty that’s right in front of you, be it nature, friends you meet on your walks or simply your dog’s happy face as it frolics through snow-covered fields. Bonus: Your body will burn more calories as it’s trying extra hard to keep you warm. And finally, think about how accomplished and relaxed you’ll feel once you and your furry buddy curl up on the couch with a well-deserved cup of hot chocolate or tea.

As Old Man Winter will be visiting us soon, the skiers and snowboarders are anxiously awaiting the opening of resorts all over Europe to enjoy the winter wonderland. For those of you preferring a more slow-paced approach to outdoor winter fun, we have just the right option for you: Grindelwald Schlittelbahn, or Grindelwald sled run. ture and was hooked within a few minutes. Sledding is normally associated with taking the kids on a small hill, riding down for a very short time and having to schlep back up over and over again, which can be a bit exhausting. One of my favorite sled adventures is only a few hours away from the Kaiserslautern Military Community area. The quaint village of Grindel wald, Switzerland, boasts the world’s longest sled run which is 12.5 km long and known as the Big Pintenfritz. I first took this sled run a few years ago on a weekend ski/snowboard adven-

Things to consider Check snow and weather conditions first thing in the morning. High winds, fog, and snow can take you by surprise within minutes. Check for updates on transportation fares, rental fees as well as closures due to weather.
Do be aware of sleds behind, passing or in front of you. Most injuries occur during crashes with other riders. Don’t wear a scarf or any loose clothing or jewelry. They can get tangled up on the sled especially during a wipe out.

MEANINGFUL HOLIDAY GIFT by Katie F. Boltuch Contributing writer
The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time to start thinking about what to get your spouse or loved ones.

If you’re like me, you have that one family member who is simply impossible to buy for. Does “I don’t need anything this year, just you” sound familiar? One thing I’ve always been good at, if I may brag a bit, is selecting gifts for friends and family — even for people like my father who seem to have everything. If you haven’t purchased any holiday gifts or are totally at a loss as to what to get for your significant other or loved ones, I’d like to share some personal tips as well as ideas from others on how to select that perfect and meaningful present.
Know your audience
More often than not, we select a gift for others based on what we would want rather than what they would want. Take a step back and really think about the person. Have they already mentioned something they would want? If not, the next thing to do is to think about that person — what are their interests, hobbies, etc.
What are their interests? What do they enjoy?
Although it seems logical, we don’t always consider the hobbies of our loved ones. Does your spouse like to fix things? Maybe there’s a tool they’ve wanted for a while or they need a new tool chest.
Have they mentioned something they might be interested in starting, such as fishing or scrapbooking? A subscription to magazines or even a beginner book on the subject could help. For example, when my sister was learning how to knit, I bought her a how-to book as well as a few different kinds of yarn. This gave her an opportunity to learn more about the various styles of knitting, the fabric and how to design new items.
Give them an experience
The actual gift doesn’t always have to be tangible. “If they have tons of stuff then try to do an experience — a pass to the zoo, a sports game, etc.,” suggested Katie Reynolds from Miesenbach. Do they like music? Maybe their favorite musician or band has a concert or event coming up they might enjoy. Do they like art or history? Buy them tickets to a museum they’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t had a chance. Do they love watching sports? Instead of getting them a jersey or another element of sports paraphernalia, maybe think about a subscription to a magazine or sport network, such as NFL Ticket. You could also consider sending them on a scavenger hunt for their gift. The search for the gift can add to the adventure and make the experience memorable.
Sometimes simple is the best option
Thanks to websites like Pinterest and Etsy, you are all but sure to find simple answers to your dilemma. Do your in-laws have a favorite vacation destination or location they love to visit? Think about framing a picture or drawing of some of these places. What about a formal family picture? No need to break the bank on this one either. Ask a friend to help with pictures, upload the picture to a user-friendly website like Shutterfly to edit photos, make canvas prints or create a picture album. It’s a heartfelt gift that never goes out of style.
Do it yourself
The holidays can get a bit busy so this may not be a great option, but if you have the time and resources, sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones we make ourselves. Referring back to Pinterest, there are boards for everything and anything you can think of with regards to DIY gifts. From creating a family scrapbook, mounting pictures in a frame or even creating a cookbook of all your family recipes as a keepsake, help is there for you! Additionally, you can also find some great ideas if you can’t think of any yourself.
Home is where the military sends us
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? One of the things my husband and I do is send trinkets from each new location we live. Karlie Gaspard from Birkenfeld agreed, explaining that since she’s been living in Germany, her and her husband have been sending German-themed gifts to family and friends. Of course, if you’ve been in Germany for more than a year you may have already thought of this, but you should also consider gifts from the places you visit while you’re living overseas. If you’re planning a vacation soon or are about to go on one, think about things that your family or loved ones might enjoy that you can only get in those destinations.
Consider gift cards
I shudder at the thought of this because I’ve always thought of gift cards as impersonal, but sometimes they can be very thoughtful. “Last year we got my parents a Home Depot gift card because they needed to get work done on the house,” explained Brooke Sands from Bann. Does that special someone really need a break? A gift card or certificate for a massage or spa day would be appropriate. What if you know a store the person likes to shop at but you aren’t quite sure
what to get them? This is when a gift card would be appropriate.
Use the internet
There are a variety of great websites that can help with selecting a gift. One of my go-to sites is www.uncommongoods.com. This site not only has awesome gift suggestions, but you are also likely to find some of the most unique presents you’ve ever seen. Another site is www.gifts.com/ finder. When you visit this site, you’ll be prompted to answer a few questions based on the personality of the person you’re shopping for. Do the short quiz and peruse their suggestions. If all else fails, check to see if they’ve made an Amazon Wish List. Simply go to www.amazon.com and search for their name or email under the Wish List section.

Who is crazy enough to go camping in Germany during the winter? Especially when the night time temps start dipping into freezing. I am that person with a few others that have learned how to pitch a tent, make a fire and enjoy this great outdoor adventure even when the sun rises late and sets early. Proper planning, having the right gear, and finding the right place to go can make you a happy camper during any season of the year. During the winter season, you don’t have to deal with bugs, slugs and a crowded noisy campground with campfire parties keeping you up all night which allows you to enjoy the peacefulness of your surroundings. However, if you don’t prepare in advance it can lead to a miserable experience especially if you’re taking the kids along. If you’re an experienced fair weather camper, you only need to make a few adjustments to your equipment, location, eating and drinking habits, food storage as well as making sure that any electronics will not freeze up and fail during extended exposure to cold weather. One of the best things that I’ve experienced about camping in winter is to wake up early, gear up and enjoy a snowshoe hike,

CAMPING RESORT ZUGSPITZE
Located at the foot of Germany’s highest peak, this camp ground has a ski room for storage of your gear, rental area with discounts, as well as a shuttle to the surrounding popular areas. If you are a hiker or cross country skier, there are many tracks just outside of the Ammergau Alps. Skiing, snowboarding, horse carriage rides and many other winter activities are offered directly from the campground. If you live in the KMC or Baumholder area and don’t want to travel far for a winter camping experience, Bostalsee is the perfect campground for you. The site is is only a short drive heading north on Autobahn 62 direction Trier. The campground is open year-round with areas for pitching tents, caravan camping, and rustic huts that are excellent for the entire family. The amenities include electrical connections, personal hygiene facilities, trash disposal, Wi-Fi, and is only a short distance from the Center Parc vacation center with indoor pool, outdoor heated pool and spa. If you want to partake in winter sports you will have to drive to the Erbeskopf area which is about 25 minutes away. There you can cross-country ski, downhill ski, sled, and snowboard. What to bring: Cold weather rated tents, sleeping bags, blankets, cooking gear, first aid kit, sunscreen, water, food, firewood, snacks, all weather clothing layers, cell phone, and euro cash as plastic is not accepted everywhere. Dos and Don’ts: Do have snow chains and emergency kits in your vehicle. 4WD is no match for icy conditions. Also, water and snacks to tide you over in case of a long delay during travel. Do check your camping equipment especially for wear and tear as well as temperature ratings. Don’t venture out alone especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Don’t leave your trash for someone else to gather or leave a campfire smoldering throughout the night. Don’t use a heat source that requires fuel and open flame inside a tent or cabin. WINTER IN AUSTRIA

If you are looking for a change in scenery, culture, and adventure outside of Germany this winter season it can all be found in Zell Am See, Austria. Located a little over 7 hours by car from the KMC area this winter sport region is worth the drive.
My first visit to Zell am See was during the summer a few years ago for a group mountain bike adventure in Leogang. We explored the region, traveled to Zell and discovered what it had to offer after our last biking tour for the season. We returned in December during Christmas and checked into a small villa. and shots of Austrian Stroh Rum that gave a kick strong enough to keep us warm for several hours whilst out playing in the snow. This amazing town by the lake has a public transportation system that is so easy to use and convenient you never have to worry about getting lost, caught up in traffic or dealing with challenging driving conditions during the height of the winter sport season. There are ski busses that constantly run to the cable car lifts of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the Schmittenhöhe. Most stops are located either on the same street of your accommodations or just a short walk away.

With over 60 runs for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders, this area has something for everyone. To let you know in advance, the gondola ride was a bit long and high for some folks in my group. The gondola takes you over very steep valleys and can tend to sway a bit when the glacier winds pick up during a snow storm, so this ride is not for the faint at heart. Schmittenhöhe
77 Kilometers of slopes for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders. This has always been my favorite area because of it’s weather conditions. The winds are relatively low due to the lower
altitude, and it faces south, which places it on the sunny side of Austria, giving you a more pleasurable experience without spending your time on the slopes not being able to see where you’re going, trying to stay upright in the wind. If you are not a down hill skier or snowboarder there are plenty of other activities awaiting you in this region. Winter hiking around the lake, cross country skiing, snowshoeing trails, sledding, and more are just minutes away from the center of Zell. If you don’t want to play in the snow you can spend the weekend relaxing and staying warm in the region’s two major spa facilities.

THANKSGIVING TURKEY Thanksgiving: Pre-turkey

When it comes to Thanksgiving, turkey just might be the most essential part of the holiday. But it wasn’t always that way. For better or for worse (especially for turkeys), it took the help of a nineteenth-century nursery rhyme writer to earn turkey the prime spot on the Thanksgiving table.
In the American mythos, the first credited Thanksgiving is generally agreed to have happened in 1621, when a group of European settlers and Wampanoag people shared a meal of deer, harvest vegetables, and possibly ducks and geese. Of course, no one at that meal called it Thanksgiving. In fact, the name didn’t really begin to be used until more than 200 years later. And it wasn’t until 1863, during the middle of the Civil War, when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. Despite the lack of an official name, however, many colonial-era Americans celebrated the harvest season with feasts that included many types of food, including turkey. These feasts weren’t particularly formal. And naturally, because it was the 19th century, none of them involved falling asleep after the meal in front of a televised football game.
Turkey enters the scene

were beginning to see the benefits of eating turkey. And the benefits haven’t changed much since. Turkeys are big birds. They can feed lots of people. They were plentiful in New England, and were easy to find (and hunt) in the wild. Colonial farmers also found that turkeys were easy enough to domesticate, and that they were the perfect bird for feasts, since turkeys didn’t provide eggs like chickens or geese. So it wasn’t surprising that these birds began finding their way to early American tables.
The godmother of Thanksgiving
But it took Sarah Josepha Hale, most notably the author of “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” to thrust both Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving turkey into the American national consciousness. In 1827, Hale published Northwood, a novel that prominently featured a chapter on a New England Thanksgiving meal. Notably, the book included a roast turkey as the meal’s centerpiece.

About the same time, Hale began campaigning to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. Because social media had yet to be invented, her effort took more than three decades to come to fruition. By the time President Lincoln did make it official, turkey and Thanksgiving had almost become synonymous.
Turkey today?
Though contemporary Thanksgiving means different things to different Americans, turkey is still an inescapable feature, for many of the same reasons that it was in Hale’s day. Turkeys are plentiful. They’re large and relatively affordable. They’re part of a well-established tradition. And they fit in American ovens (which isn’t always the case in Europe). So even if you opt for a veggie or vegan Thanksgiving (who among us hasn’t longed to try Tofurkey?) this year, be sure to give a small salute to America’s holiday bird: The turkey.
