The sentinels continued their vigil during the flower ceremony, though they changed their traditional position, walking on the east side of the tomb to allow the public access.

Nov. 9 with remarks, performances and offerings from representatives of the Crow Nation — an echo of 100 years earlier, when Crow Chief Plenty Coups participated in the Nov. 11, 1921, interment service for the first Unknown Soldier. The flower ceremony was to end with the same benediction given by the first Army chief of chaplains in 1921.

For the first time in nearly 100 years, members of the public walked on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plaza and laid flowers to personally honor the unknowns. The event is one of many at Arlington National Cemetery marking the centennial of the tomb, the

grave of three Unknown Soldiers and a symbolic tribute to the memory of all U.S. service members through history. Families with small children and other civilians, veterans and service members all stood in line for the opportunity to approach the sacred space, many offering prayers or salutes in addition to flowers. The upcoming holiday season can present safety hazards in many different ways in your home, whether you are residing on or off-base. If planning to stay at home during the holidays, it is essential to know about potential home hazards. The KMC Housing Office has collected a few important “Holiday Safety Tips” for you and your family.

The DOs and DON’Ts »» DON’T wait before the deep chill of winter sets in. Winterize your home now! »» DON’T put exterior decorations that can impede walking paths. Keep your stairs clear, and don’t cover railings with decorations in such a way that people can’t grab on if they need to steady themselves. »» DON’T forget to check all lights and extension cords for frayed wires, damaged sockets, and gaps in the insulation. If they are damaged, toss them! »» DON’T link more than three strands of lights together. »» DON’T plug different light sets together, including one of your old incandescent light strings, into a new LED set. »» DON’T mount lights in any way that could damage the electrical cord’s insulation using nails, tacks, or staples. Instead, string them through hooks, use plastic clips, or secure them with insulated tape. »» DON’T overload electrical circuits. »» DON’T run extension cords under rugs. Instead, run them next to the wall, so there is no tripping/fire hazard. Never connect extension cords together. »» DO watch while cooking in the kitchen. Statistically, unattended cooking is the most common cause of home fires. »» DO keep the proper type of fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen. »» DO hang outdoor lights safely (test your lights before it’s time to hang them). If you’re using a ladder to hang your lights—have a second person hold the bottom of the ladder for added safety. »» DO turn off all of your decorative lights when you leave the house and before you go to bed. Or be sure to keep lights on a timer (follow the KMC housing guidance for the applicable times). »» DO place candles safely from anything that could catch fire, and never leave them unattended when lit. Make sure that your candles are in sturdy holders with no risk of falling over! »» DO unplug unused appliances when you’re away from your home or on extended leave. »» DO look for safety-certified decorations to prevent possible electrical issues.

786 FSS goes full send Story and photos by Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Force Support Squadron works around the clock to provide premier total force support and quality of life at Ramstein Air Base. Additionally, the 786 FSS runs one of the largest postal offices in the Department of Defense. Sending out packages, official mail and regular mail for all Ramstein residents is just one of many things the squadron does. “Throughout the holidays there is an influx in mail,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Brieland Lanear, 786 FSS postmaster. “Loved ones back from the states are sending packages and people are also ordering much more while sending more packages back to the states.” This year, 786 FSS upgraded several systems to improve email notifications individuals receive when packages are ready for pickup. Lanear asks patrons to be patient while Airmen and volunteers work to make sure notifications are sent out properly to ensure members pick up their mail on time. During this holiday season, 786 FSS is taking volunteers to help sort the expected upsurge of packages.

“We rely heavily on our volunteer force throughout the holiday season to help us get through this surge of packages that comes with being the third largest post office in the Department of Defense,” said Lanear. “We are coming up on our holiday season so we just implore anyone that wants to come out and volunteer to do so.” Volunteers can sign up to assist the post office on Ramstein’s webbased Appointment Plus tool. “Every hour of help we get is essential to the mission, especially during the holiday season,” said Tech. Sgt. Darren Webster, 786 FSS postmaster. 86 MXG: Empowering innovation Story and photo by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many believe maintenance is what keeps the world going — from vehicles, buildings, your home and everything else in between. If no one keeps up with repairs, failure is imminent. Everything needs tender loving care to stay operational and the U.S. Air Force and its aircraft are no different. If maintenance professionals do not keep everything tight, there will not be flight. The 86th Maintenance Group operates out of Ramstein Air Base, and it’s one of the busiest maintenance units in the Air Force. They play a pivotal part in Ramstein’s role as a Global Gateway to Europe and beyond. With the 86th Airlift Wing’s fleet of C-130J Super Hercules, C-21s, and C-37s, the wing provides U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation capabilities. The 86 AW’s C-130Js have the highest utilization rate in the Air Force, and the 86 MXG is solely responsible for keeping the aircraft ready for anything. “At a moment’s notice we provide

air power for whatever the needs of the Air Force are at that time,” said Master Sgt. Reid Beimling, 86th Maintenance Squadron Maintenance Operation Center section chief. “We keep all of our aircraft flight-worthy because we never know when or where they might be needed. Readiness is key to our mission.” The 86 MXG is critical to the success of the 86th AW’s mission. If they could not bring their skill set to the table, much of the Global Gateway mission would come to a standstill. “We are absolutely vital to the 86th Airlift Wing mission,” Beimling said. “We are here to ensure the success of any airlift operations anywhere, at any time. If we do not do our jobs the mission would come to a halt. As the world has seen multiple times in recent years, we are very good at our jobs.” Recent large-scale operations, such as Operation Allies Welcome, put strain on many of the units across the 86 AW. the evacuees were cared for. Not only that, we oversaw the initial bed down and installed heaters throughout the pods.” Like many operations of the past, innovation was the key to success. The 86 MXG leadership strives to empower Airmen to come up with innovative and unique solutions to make their fleet run smoother. “It is always amazing to see what our Airmen can think of and how they can use it to better our force,” said 1st Lt. Alexander Norton, the

required a long transportation time for pregnant evacuees. Melvin realized the importance of being able to provide treatment as soon as patients arrived due to some being close to delivering. Melvin and his team gathered supplies and equipment, such as an infant warmer and a neonatal transporter, needed to assist a woman with delivering a child. They stationed themselves on the flightline near the Installation Deployment Readiness Center to provide critical care in a timely manner. Chapman believes that Melvin’s decision played an important part

in there being no casualties that took place at Ramstein. The transportation time that would have resulted without Melvin’s quick thinking, could have proven fatal. This is not the first time that Melvin, a Newburgh, New Yorknative, caught the attention of multitudes of people for his expertise. Melvin grew up singing in a children’s choir. While stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, Melvin spent his free time performing before multiple audiences, some as large as 450 people, who came to listen to his musical performances. From these experiences, Melvin learned how to remain calm under pressure, regardless of the gravity of any situation. “I just tell myself to not stress or panic and to find a solution,” Melvin said. “That is how I go about a lot of things in life. I like to create actions that create change. While you can stress and worry, it does not bring you any closer to resolving the issue. I keep that at the forefront of my mind at all times.” Being recognized for his accomplishments moved Melvin deeply and led him to an epiphany. “To get this coin from General Olson is such a huge deal for me,” Melvin said. “It makes me realize that whatever you do, whether you feel like you’re doing something really important or just doing your job, someone is seeing it. So keep doing it and stay on track, keep striving and keep pushing forward.”

Women Airforce Service Pilots, their fight for veteran status by Stephen Arionus, PhD Air Force Personnel Center On the evening of August 23, 1943, a pilot named Mabel Rawlinson died in a fiery crash in the North Carolina swamplands near Fort Davis. Unbeknownst to her, she was doing night exercises in an aircraft that another pilot previously flagged for engine troubles. In a separate incident, when a woman pilot trainee died in a crash, her classmates had to send around a collection to return her body to her family because the government would not foot the bill for the expense. And on October 2, 1944, in Victorville, California, another plane crashed killing all on board. In that incident, all but one crew member received a funeral with full military honors. That last crew member and her family received nothing. Each of the pilots who gave their lives in service to their nation were Women Airforce Service Pilots; however, due to a bureaucratic technicality, the federal government classified all WASPs as civilian employees rather than military during World War II. This was never meant to be a permanent status. At the time, many believed WASPs would eventually be militarized like other all-women auxiliary units. “Civil service was a convenient expedient to get the program started,” stated retired Air Force Col. Bruce Arnold, the son of Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold. The United States just needed pilots. Gen. Hap Arnold worked on the principle

It would take more than 30 years and an act of Congress before WASPs would receive the recognition of their efforts in WWII, and the status as military veterans. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and brought the United States into the war, the nation was woefully underprepared. It would take months for the United States to become the “arsenal of democracy” that President Roosevelt envisioned; it took time to convert plants outfitted to mass produce cars into ones that could output a B-24 Liberator every 63 minutes. WASP, understood that the bottleneck in terms of pilot production would be their training. She believed WASPs could help produce more pilots by shouldering some logistical burdens thus allowing male pilots to focus on combat related training and overseas duty. She outlined her proposal for Eleanor Roosevelt, which ultimately became the roadmap for WASP with the addition of some modifications including the incorporation of Nancy Harkness Love’s independent pilot program for women, the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron. Between 1942 and 1944, more than 25,000 women applied to become a WASP, but only around 1,100 completed training and earned their silver pilot’s wings, according to historian Katherine Sharp Landdeck. Thirty-eight WASPs died in service of their nation. WASPs flew 12,000 aircraft 60 million miles thus allowing male pilots to focus on combat related training. Although their primary responsibility was to ferry newly built planes from the factory floor to points of embarkation, WASPs also

towed aerial targets for aerial combat training for their male peers, and some even served as check pilots. Chief of the Army Air Corps, Gen. Hap Arnold described WASP’s service as a complete success. Moreover, he said it was “on record that women can fly as well as men” and that they could fly any plane — from AT-6s to B-29s, WASPs flew each platform “like veterans.” Such praise from Gen. Arnold was notable, especially because he was skeptical of women’s ability to fly before he met WASPs. By the end of their service, they had made Gen. Arnold a believer. One of the most respected military pilots of his age praised WASP’s competency and skill during a time when much of society still believed that women should remain in the domestic sphere, certainly not flying a military aircraft. In 1944, with the end of the war in sight, the War Department disbanded the WASP program five days before Christmas with little warning, a plan for demobilization (some women had to pay for their own way home), and without the militarization of their unit, something most assumed would eventually happen. According to the official AAC history, “it was the general consensus (within the AAC) that within a short time the WASP would be nonexistent as a separate organization.” Arnold was a proponent of militarization. Some believed it would fold into the Army’s Women’s Auxiliary Corps whose members handled things such as switchboard operators, mechanics and typists; however, Jacqueline Cochran thought that women pilots should be commissioned directly into the Army using existing authorities. WAC placed certain limitations on women that did not suit experienced, skilled female aviators. Congress gave authority to the AAC to make temporary officer appointments, but the AAC chose not to do so adhering to

a narrow interpretation of the law stating it applied to men only. Years later Senator Goldwater pointedly remarked, “Women could be commissioned as typists, file clerks or nurses, but when they wanted to fly aircraft, women were not even considered to be ‘persons’ in the eyes of the law.” After the war, WASP veterans continued to press for the recognition to which they believed they were entitled. Surviving members enlisted the aid of prominent voices including Senator Barry Goldwater, Congresswomen Margaret Heckler and Lindy Boggs, along with retired Col. Bruce Arnold. Their efforts led to Congressional hearings in 1977. This was not the first time a bill for the militarization of WASPs came before Congress. Those earlier efforts failed in large part because of opposition from the same type of groups who opposed the 1977 bill: the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans among others. Their argument against recognition in 1977 was that granting veteran status to WASPs would open the floodgates to other people, thereby diminishing the status of, and entitlements to, veterans everywhere. These fears proved unfounded. Congress passed the GI Bill Improvement Act of 1977, which retroactively granted WASPs “active duty status” for the “purposes of laws administered by the Veterans’ Administration.” In 2016, Congress passed a separate law affording WASPs burial rights in Arlington National Cemetery after the Secretary of the Army denied WASP Elaine Harmon burial at the cemetery. As we celebrate Veterans Day, let’s take a moment to remember the remarkable history of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. Their story reminds us that the term “veteran” and the rights associated with it are not etched in stone, unaltered for time eternal. Rather that designation is granted by the state and is therefore susceptible to the vicissitudes of Capitol Hill politics. Nevertheless, from the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (precursor to the Veterans Administration) in the aftermath of the Civil War to equitably extending GI Bill benefits to all who served in WWII, veterans’ tenacity ensured the state kept the promises it made — both implicit and explicit — in exchange for their faithful service to the nation. As the United States moves away from a perennial war footing to one of peacetime, with thousands of citizen-soldiers becoming citizen-veterans each year, it becomes imperative for us to remember the debts we owe to previous generations who safeguarded our democracy because, as the history of the WASPs has shown, it is far too easy for us to forget.

Department of the Air Force releases addendum to Disparity Review by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs In addition to the two Inspector General Disparity Reviews released over the last year, the Department of the Air Force released an addendum, which focused on the intersection of race, ethnicity and gender. The DAF IG Disparity Review Addendum follows the DAF’s 2020 Racial Disparity Review, which addressed disparities impacting Black Airmen and Guardians, and the Sept. 2021 Disparity Review, which addressed disparities based on gender and among other racial and ethnic groups not covered by the RDR. Data from both reports was used to create the addendum. “It is clear we still have work to do in fostering inclusive environments where every service member feels respected and valued, and has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “Where barriers exist, we need to break them down. I am convinced diversity in our force makes us a stronger team and more capable to answer our nation’s call.”

The data in the disparity reports released this year indicate females were generally equally or overrepresented in promotions, enlisted leadership, and professional military education designations. Females have also made gains in both overall accessions and racial-ethnic diversity in accessions when compared to their male peers. However, with few exceptions in the data, this addendum found the overrepresentation of White females in these categories may have masked the disparate promotion and opportunity representation of females from under-represented groups. This addendum report provides additional clarity into disparities previously identified in the RDR and DR. Data examined at the intersection of race, ethnicity and gender indicated disparities in DAF opportunities and discipline primarily fall along racial-ethnic lines and gender lines with the following findings offering additional clarity: • Racial-ethnic minority females were notably underrepresented in career fields that historically lead to wing commander, and in top senior leadership positions such as chief master ser-

geant, wing commander, and Senior Executive Service (SES). For example, racial and ethnic minority female pilots make up less than 1% of the total RegAF pilot force. Within RegAF operations career fields, for all races and ethnicities, female representation decreased as rank increased, falling to zero for Black, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Multi-Racial female general officers. • The disparity among Asian American service members serving in leadership roles is most prominent among Asian American males, who were underrepresented in officer and enlisted leadership positions when compared to White males, and all other racialethnic minority males. • Previous reports found Black officers overall were underrepresented in wing commander positions and officer development opportunities. This addendum found Black male officers were equally or overrepresented in wing command as compared to their respective eligible populations, while

Black female officers were underrepresented. Additionally, Black female officers were underrepresented in Senior Developmental Education (SDE) designations and were promoted below the in-thepromotion-zone rate to O-6. In fact, between CY16 and CY20, Black females with squadron command experience promoted to O6 at a lower rate than the overall rate for officers with or without squadron command experience combined. • Female officers and civilian employees were selected/ designated for developmental opportunities at higher rates than their male counterparts, but males proportionally represent the majority of those who attend professional military education, with the following exceptions, Black female officer SDE designations and Multi-Racial female officers in both IDE and SDE designations. • This addendum found Hispanic/Latino and Asian American military males had consistent disparities in promotion opportunities. They

were promoted below the average rate for all RegAF enlisted and officer promotions. With regards to inclusion, the DAF conducted a more focused analysis of select survey responses. Of all the race, ethnicity, gender, and rank groups surveyed, the report found that minority female officers generally held more negative views on the topics surveyed. Overall, females had less trust than their male counterparts that their chain of command would address racism, bias, and derogatory comments and behavior. “Understanding where disparities exist helps us recognize where changes need to be made to eliminate them,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones. “Our words, actions, and policies directly convey the value we place on every Airmen, Guardian and civil servant’s service.” The Air Force is incorporating this new data into its ongoing root cause analysis and will consider action plans to address where appropriate. The Inspector General will evaluate these additional categories as part of its yearly review.

Dutch interoperability tool poised to turbo-charge multinational cooperation Story and photo by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Interoperability with Allied forces is a top Department of Defense priority. According to the Netherlands Army officers who visited 21st Theater Sustainment Command in November, the Dutch have created a web-based tool that will make multi-national sustainment planning faster and more accurate. “We created an interactive host nation support system which allows all the participating countries to have a smooth operation,” said Second Lt. Daan Verwaaij, a Dutch Army officer. “Instead of papers, spreadsheets, and emails, it’s all electronic within the system.” Over two days, Verwaaij and his colleagues Maj. Geert Vanhaastrecht and Maj. Peter Gijsbers, both Dutch Army officers, walked 21st TSC Host Nation Support staff through the web-based system, dubbed iHNS, in development since 2018. The objective of their visit was to help the U.S. get started on the system and set the stage for other countries to follow. “The expansion to other countries is one of the major milestones we want to achieve,” said Gijsbers Lt. Col. Scott Gum, Chief of the 21st TSC Theater Movements Center, said the program could be useful throughout the 21st TSC. “This tool that the Netherlands has built helps us communicate

all together instead of having oneoffs, emails and phone calls from different people,” he said. “A lot of different sections across the 21st have requirements, so even though it’s the iHNS system that we are looking at, it’s not just host nation support. There’s transportation requests, the Theater Movements Center is involved, there’s security. We are exploring what’s possible for potentially using it for Defender 22 and beyond.” One of the major benefits of iHNS, is that it eliminates multiple emails and telephone calls, according to Vanhaastrecht. “Now you have one complete overview of everything that’s required for an operation in one place, and there’s only one version of it, so there’s no

differences in the version of the statement of requirements.” Planners will no longer have to keep track of spreadsheets going back and forth, or be unsure if they have the latest version. “In this case, when you log in, that is the latest version, always,” said Gijsbers. In the past, relying on outdated information has resulted in mishaps ranging from not having enough supplies to missing rendezvous. “Forces were crossing a border at one point and the host nation forces that were expecting the crossing forces were at another border crossing point because the information wasn’t shared correctly,” recalled Verwaaij. Capt. Michael McKinney, 21st TSC TMC, provided another example of the importance of being able to share information in real time. “Say the number of personnel changes coming in,” he said. “And on one spreadsheet there were

50 people, but the actual number coming in is 60 or 70. If the folks in the Netherlands didn’t get the right information from the United States planners, the 70 people are going to show up and there is not enough food or water and all the things that they need. Garrison CYS slam dunks service, named one of five best in US Story and photo by Shaylee Borcsani U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz In a full court press against the coronavirus pandemic, Baumholder Child and Youth Services slam dunked its reimagined youth sports program during the COVID lockdown and scored a national award. Baumholder’s Youth Sports and Fitness Programs won the “Excellence in Youth Sports” award from the National Alliance of Youth Sports in a ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 27. This award is given to five United States youth sports programs worldwide. NAYS is a non-profit youth sports organization whose mission is to empower and educate youth sports leaders so children have a safe and positive athletic experience. “We competed against very large organizations like the YMCA and AYSO (American Youth Soccer),” said Marcel Fisher, Baumholder youth sports and fitness director. “This award is a big deal as it highlights our youth sports program at Baumholder as one of the best in the country.” Fisher said Baumholder’s CYS received this award because of its ability to continue to provide, and even grow, the youth sports program during the peak of the pandemic. “Admittedly, the goal we set was a towering one,” said Fisher. “Some of the hurdles we had to overcome were low staff, low resources, and mental fatigue, but we had to face these challenges head on so we could continue to serve the children in the community.” Fisher said he and his team designed creative ways for the community’s youth to stay active. “We had to get to get out of our comfort zone during the pandemic with the goal to provide a safe way for kids to continue be active,” said Fisher. “We had to get creative, and that is what we did.” New programs included: • A Virtual Start Smart program that introduced popular sports to children ages 3-4; • Healthy habits videos highlighting healthy snacks and how to make them; • A virtual basketball skills camp offering a “pick-up and play initiative” for families to check out equipment. This allowed children to play remotely from their living rooms, backyards, or garages; • Skill Development camps that taught golf, archery, soccer and cross country; and • “Fun Fridays” meet-ups between the community’s youth to participate in disc golf, bowling and wall climbing.

The program's virtual content netted 3,600 views and 615 enrollments for the skill development clinics and Start Smart. Fisher said the new clinics were well received netting 224 fall enrollments, which is the highest single-season enrollment the staff can recall. “The most challenging aspect of this was creating ways the youth could still be active in our sports programs,” said Fisher. “We did not possess a lot of virtual content creating experience, so we had to create video products.” Fisher said innovation and hard work by his team led to the success, including contributions from: • Whitney Clemmons, assistant director, who created and started virtual basketball skills camp along with camera operations and video editing; • Andhia Campos, fitness specialist, who led the exercise and start smart instruction during the virtual basketball camp, created warm-up and cool-down exercises, and edited videos; • Randy Ault, equipment and facility assistant, who prepared and organized sport equipment bags and revived and improved a CYS facility in Baumholder; and • Henry Wilkerson, Landstuhl’s fitness specialist, who was the basketball coach during the virtual basketball skills camp. He created individual drills and more. For Campos, the most challenging aspect was learning a new skill. “Having to learn how to edit a video, cut out content, and move it around, adding sounds and music at precise moments of the videos, and having to figure out how to increase

or lower the sounds was something that we had to learn to do in limited time,” said Campos. “This challenge was overcome by trial and error, and by conducting research online.” Fisher said the award is just the start. “We are a small, but a very mighty program,” said Fisher. “We care about the community’s kids and this award shouldn’t be an exception. It should be the expectation. We are going to strive to make sure that Baumholder is one of the top youth sports programs in the world.” Jennifer Hodges, Baumholder’s Child and Youth Services coordinator, lauded the work done by the Baumholder FMWR professionals. “This is a true team effort,” said Hodges. “This program showed potential when I first came on board but it needed blood, sweat, and tears. The team has put forth that effort, and this award exemplifies that. It is so exciting.”

Garrison winds down from historic OAW mission Story and photo by Shaylee Rawls Borcsani U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Ushered out of Afghanistan and finding themselves in the middle of the Kaiserslautern Military Community, the last of the Afghan travelers left U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Oct. 9. More than 34,900 Afghan evacuees traveled through Ramstein Air Base and Rhine Ordnance Barracks since Aug. 20. ROB accommodated approximately 12,000 travelers and hosted over 2,000 support personnel with operations managed by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “Supporting this mission required coordination of garrison support at various levels,” said Henry Kaaihue, garrison directorate of plans, training, and mobilization. “There is a lot of coordination within the garrison to make old, shuttered and uninhabited buildings operational and inspecting and ensuring they have utilities and are livable.” Overall, 29 large fest type tents were erected on the garrison’s footprint to house the travelers in eight zones called ‘Life Support Areas’ while more than 800 Soldiers augmenting the operation lived in 14 barracks throughout Baumholder, Miesau, and Sembach. “We did not have the living space on ROB to just house all the travelers and supporting Soldiers overnight,” said Greg Williams, directorate of public works chief. “We had to use all of the capabilities we had, like opening barracks that were shuttered, finding ways to heat and power the tents, and ensure barracks were operationally ready for occupants.” According to Williams, maintaining all the facilities, infrastructure and support operations was not an easy task, but the garrison was able to adapt to mission support requirements quickly. “This was a very large mission for our team and we were able to accomplish it without degradation of services to the community,” said Williams. “What the team accomplished throughout the mission is outstanding, and they made it seem

easy, which is even more incredible.” Hygiene and fuel The temporary living quarters meant the garrison needed hygiene points for the travelers, done via contracts. A total of 272 showers and latrines and 213 handwashing stations were placed throughout the LSAs. As the mission’s timeline extended, the temperatures began to drop. The low temps created a need for heated tents and the Army needed fuel to generate the heat. “Approximately 100,000 liters of fuel flowed through ROB during the entirety of the mission,” said George Brown, garrison DPW administration and operations branch chief. “The garrison is extremely helpful for missions like OAW because they have the ability to quickly create and expand upon existing contracts relatively easy,” said Capt. Alexander Lovely, 21st TSC. “This allows for us to get the needed resources quickly.” Contracting a partnership to fuel effectiveness The quick contracting ability that Lovely is referring to comes via the garrison’s logistics partnership with the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. The garrison worked collectively with the brigade to provide full-spectrum support. Contracts that were created or

expanded include: • Cleaning the DPC area after mission completion • Custodial cleaning • Emergency quarters for service members • Heating equipment and lighting for LSAs four • Pest control • Play sand for the children in the DPC • Privacy fence screening Coordinating with multiple units can create confusion, but the garrison had rotating designated operations liaison officers like Billy Whisler. His role was to be the communicator, coordinator, and tracker for tasks like escort operations and work orders. “My job was to make sure we were on the same page as other organizations,” said Whisler, “We wanted to ensure integration of the appropriate and necessary garrison services and operations to meet mission needs. When you are dealing with multiple units operating in different capacities, information, coordination and synchronization is key. Being present with other key personnel lessens the risk for miscommunication.”

The garrison’s directorate of emergency services increased the force protection of the camp site and assisted with bus escorts from ROB to Ramstein Air Base along with medical transports to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “We conducted approximately 195 bus escorts to and from Ramstein Air Base for approximately 12,000 travelers,” said Terry Dunlap, deputy director of garrison directorate of emergency services. “We did one to five round trips daily with anywhere from one to five buses at a time.”

A whole team approach Further contributions from the directorates of human resources, resource management, religious support office, and other garrison directorates and staff offices provided a stable, efficient foundation for its client, the 21st TSC and Ramstein Air Base, to operate. The garrison’s entire effort from the time the first aircraft touched down until the final flight left the runway at Ramstein was nothing short of amazing, according to Michael Amarosa, deputy to the garrison commander. “From top to bottom, this team showed why IMCOM professionals are simply the best, putting people first and showing what the gold standard for a ‘Ready Garrison’ looks like. The garrison team was able to come together in a short amount of time and do remarkable things in support of the mission,” he said. “Thank you to all of the garrison team members and partners who came together to make this mission a success.”

Air Force releases alternate component fitness score charts by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs The Air Force will officially add new alternative components to physical fitness assessments beginning Jan. 1, 2022. The updated scoring charts can be found here. After announcing the components in July, over 9,000 data points were collected to determine the point values for each component by assessing approximately 2,000 Airmen from 23 installations. Airmen will have the choice to perform these options to meet the strength and cardiovascular requirements: Cardio • Traditional 1.5-mile Run • High Aerobic Multi-shuttle Run (20M HAMR) Strength • Traditional Push-ups • Hand Release Push-ups Sit-ups • Traditional Sit-ups • Cross-Leg Reverse Crunch • Plank “While testing these components at various installations, we

received a large amount of positive feedback,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel, and services. “The changes to the physical fitness assessments reflect what we learned and our desire to provide Airmen with additional flexibility in maintaining fitness standards.” Airmen can schedule their assessment and sign up for their desired cardio option via myFitness, which will be available for scheduling starting on Dec. 10. While members can select their desired cardio option when scheduling their assessment, they will select their desired strength components at time of their assessment. While the waist measurement is no longer a component of the fitness assessment, DoD Instruction 1308.3 still requires Airmen to be measured for and maintain a healthy body composition to ensure physical readiness. The Air Force Surgeon General, who has responsibility for overall Airmen health, has reviewed alternatives and determined waist-to-height ratio as the best available method for assessing body composition. AF/ SG will be providing guidance on this program in the coming months.

In addition to the approved new options, the Air Force continues to test future alternatives. Key tenets for new options include ensuring the test is an equivalent measure of fitness, regardless of testing method, and ensuring approved alternatives can be available at every location so all Airmen have the same set of options. This currently limits options like swimming or biking where sufficient equipment is not available at all locations. Likewise, based on equipment requirements and the need for continued testing, the one-mile walk is not being incorporated as an option at this time. The two-kilometer walk will remain a fitness component for those who are not medically cleared to perform the two approved aerobic options. The Air Force Services Center is working with installation Fitness Assessment Cells to schedule and conduct training for Unit Fitness Program Managers and Physical Training Leaders to ensure proper administration of the new components. The alternative events will not apply to Guardian annual fitness tests as the U.S. Space Force develops and implements their service-specific Holistic Health Assessment over the next year.

Advent, advent – A cheerful holiday season Advent is a special time full of century-old traditions as well as modern customs in Germany. The noun “advent” refers to ‘a coming into place, view or being; arrival’. More commonly the term is used to describe the season and the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

One of the older customs is that of the “Adventskranz,” a wreath bound out of fir branches and decorated with four candles. The first candle is lit on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas, taking place on Nov. 28 this year. The second candle is lit on the following Sunday and so forth up to Christmas.

Another fun-filled tradition, especially loved by younger (and maybe even older) children is the Advent calendar. The calendar can be store bought filled with chocolate, sweets or other small surprises or just as well be homemade using small jute sacks, colorful boxes, cloth pockets sewn onto textile backgrounds or in any other creative style. The individual days are marked with numbers from one to 24 and starting on Dec. 1, the recipient can open one “door” and find a surprise to sweeten the waiting time and countdown to Christmas.

St. Nicholas Dec. 6 marks the arrival of St. Nicholas who visits children and fills their freshly shined shoes with small presents such as chocolate, fruits, nuts or small toys. The tradition dates back to the fourth century when Bishop Nicholas of Myra (now in Turkey) brought fruits, nuts and tangerines to poor families.

are brightly decorated with lights, decorated indoor and outdoor trees and colorful ornaments as in many other countries around the world. Glamorously decorated stores are packed with presents to be bought, gifts to be wrapped and special seasonal dishes are on offer.

Christmas Markets The Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlsmarkt are not to be forgotten, which take place in towns and cities around the country. One of the most famous markets is the Weihnachtsmarkt in Trier, Rheinland-Pfalz, but other venues, such as medieval markets taking place in castles have become popular in recent years. The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern will be held from Nov. 22 to Dec. 23 and then again as a “New Year’s Market” from Dec. 27 to Dec. 30. The annual Cultural Market, located within the Fruchthalle is taking place from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19. Cheerfully decorated wooden booths offer handcrafted gifts, decorations, toys, candles and ornaments. Delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Rostbratwurst, crepes and sweets will let your mouth water and drinks such as spicy Gluehwein (mulled wine), punch and hot chocolate will keep visitors warm on cold winter evenings, while the aroma of cinnamon, cloves and oranges, and scented candles will lift you into the holiday spirit.

Heiligabend / Christmas Eve Finally, on Christmas Eve on Dec. 24, families traditionally meet for a light dinner and wait for the gentle tingling of a bell. This marks the arrival of the Christkind (Christ child) or the Weihnachtsmann (similar to Santa Claus) who brings children gifts. Some families sing Christmas carols together, others might visit a church service, while it has become popular for the younger folks to head out to Christmas parties after exchanging gifts.

any kid (over the age of 2). It is a great sensory activity and can work on hand strengthening too. Just buy a kit and have fun! 5. Exercise ball. This one may be for the slightly older kids. But sitting on them can help to take away some of the energy a kid has built up. Plus, they are great for sorts of activities and exercise without feeling like exercise at all! 6. Weighted blanket. Have a kid that likes to throw themselves into things. Do they really like those big, snuggly hugs? A child may be seeking that sensory input from anywhere they can get it. Weighted blankets are great for just that. By giving a child that input, it may help to calm and prevent those random dangerous couch dives we all know about. 7. Puzzles. These are great for all levels and children. Start off with

simple shape sorters, then easy puzzles placing one item into a board with simple shapes, and move up from there! Anyone can work on puzzles, but sometimes may need a little guidance if the puzzle is tricky. Simple puzzles like shapes and animals can help with word associations as well for those learning new words and sounds. 8. Art supplies! This can be as simple as markers, crayons, and colored paper, to maybe a kid’s easel with chalkboard/dry erase to those art supply kits you see for kids. Art is great way for kids to be able to express themselves. It can also stimulate thinking, creativity, and fine-motor skills. Maybe get a smock for a child to wear to decrease the mess or try and do messy activities outside to help with the clean-up.

9. Anything that pedals! Tricycles, bicycles, etc. There is even a great one without pedals called a Plasma car that uses the arms only. Anything with pedals or like this helps with coordination, balance, strengthening, and so much more! They are always great. Germany is a great time for the whole family to get some pedals and go explore the trails! 10. Games. There are so many games out there for children of all ages to play. Simple card games like Go Fish! and Memory are great for the smaller kids. Move on to games that teach kids to win and lose gracefully. There can also be co-op games where each person builds on the next and not competing. Think outside the box. It doesn’t have to be a board game. There are tons of games for everyone in the family to play. There you have it! The top 10 toy ideas for a holiday wishlist for your children to support developmental skills. This list encompass many age groups and a variety of ideas. No matter the toy, you want to make sure it makes the child happy, is safe, and can form memories for everyone.

SOCA VALLEY from Page 1 the dark space from a square hole above us. We continued along the stone tunnel. It was about 12ft wide with an arched ceiling — partially hacked out of the rock, partially built with cement — wide enough for an armored vehicle to drive through. World War 1: The Isonzo Front The tunnel was built by Russian POWs for Austria-Hungary during World War 1. In 1915, Italy had declared war on Austria-Hungary, claiming land across the border at the Isonzo river – now called the Soca river – with a goal of gaining the port city of Trieste. What is now an idyllic alpine valley became a bloody front line battlefield. Locals were warned and fled as both the Austrian and Italian armies took up positions on the high mountain peaks opposing each other across the Soca (Isonzo) river. More than two years of fighting raged with fortification built and trenches being dug throughout the valley. Driving Over Vršič Pass The Austrians used Russian POWs to build a road up over the Vršic pass – creating a solid supply route. To commemorate the 10,000 prisoners, and the hundreds that died, the road is now called the Russian road. They built the tunnel we explored. It’s a beautiful drive over the Vršic pass. We counted the 50 hairpin turns along the way, and noted they were still cobblestone while the rest of the road is paved and barely wide enough for two cars to pass. At the pass there is an incredible view down into the Soca valley that rivals any scenery in the Alps. Rocky, jagged snow-covered

peaks line the edges while steep green hills fall down into the Soca river. Triglav National Park Along the way are numerous places to stop and see relics of the great war. We spotted tunnels, small outposts, crumbling towers, and the base structures for a system of cable cars the Austrians used to transport supplies. The waterways here are some of the prettiest I’ve ever seen; clear aquamarine that contrasts with the white limestone around it. This is the heart of Slovenia’s Triglav National Park, set aside to preserve 340 square miles of Julian Alps. In the Trenches The valley widens into farmland near the town of Bovec. This area saw some of the bloodiest battles during WW1. It was the heart of the Isonzo front and there are still many ruins to see today. The most memorable site for my family was the Outdoor Museum Revelnik. It is a preserved trench system built by the Austro-Hungarian army. We wandered the trenches, popped into the old medical bunk, explored the natural and expanded cave system beneath, and imagined what life would’ve been like for a soldier in the middle of winter. This spot would not have been deep in the woods as it is now but exposed in the middle of the Soca Valley, it’s only protection the hill it was dug into. It was both fascinating and somber. Hiking along The Walk of Peace We visited the area in October, so many of the typical Soca Valley adventure activities were closed for the season. It is known for rafting, canyoning, and caving. But, we were content with having the place to

ourselves. There were no crowds and the sun was shining. The mountains here are limestone, which gives it dramatic scenery; steep-sided gorges, high peaks, and waterfalls gushing out of caves. We did a lot of hiking, some of it along The Walk of Peace which is a 230km trail system established to commemorate the WWI Isonzo front. It begins in Long Pod Mangartom, a small mining village high in the Slovenian Alps and descends over 11 stages into Trieste on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The trail is pending UNESCO listing and features WWI history coupled with beautiful natural scenery. In the Soca Valley, there are numerous other WWI sites like an old battery at the Celo outdoor museum, a memorial to Italian soldiers killed in a huge gas attack, and Forts Hermann and Kluze. Fort Kluze was originally built to defend the area against the Turks in the 1400s, and again against Napoleon’s forces who destroyed it. The Austrian empire rebuilt the fort along with Fort Herman which sits on the hill above it. Currently, Fort Kluze is used as a history museum while Fort Hermann and the tunnels which connect the two have been left as a ruin for exploration. The road up to the forts was inaccessible when we visited, however, we were able to hike to the base of Fort Kluze. The hike took

us along the aquamarine Koritnica river, over some hanging bridges, and along a deep gorge. Somewhere we found another tunnel “Keep going! Keep going!” the kids chanted as we made our way along the tunnel. We did keep going for a while, until the entrance was a small dot of light behind us and our phone lights couldn’t see further into the darkness in front of us. Eventually, the cave floor was full of water. “Time to turn around,” I said. “But where does it go?” my daughter asked. “I don’t know. All these old tunnels were secret when they were built. It could go on for miles, or have a ladder to a fort just up there in the dark. It’s a mystery I’d love to solve, but we need to go back.” Since returning, I’ve researched that tunnel and can’t find any information about it. I guess that secret will remain deep in the mountains of the Soca valley.
