Christy Fairley 86th Medical Support Squadron As the winter season and, yes, the flu season draw progressively closer, your 86th Medical Group pharmacy would like to remind the KMC of services it offers and provide important information on pending changes in the TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery Program.

Commentary

TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery Program: TRICARE pharmaceutical home delivery will no longer be an option for beneficiaries receiving prescriptions at a personal APO or FPO address in Germany. German law imposes restrictions on the delivery of certain items via mail order, including pharmaceuticals, herbals and vitamins. Previously, the application of the law to U.S. forces and beneficiaries was unclear; however, recent clarification by German ministerial and postal officials has resulted in enforcement laws restricting the importation of pharmaceuticals using the TRICARE mail order pharmacy. The U.S. Postal Service will stop accepting prohibited items into the system on Jan. 1. It is important to note that other insurers who mail prescriptions are also affected by this change. Prescriptions from licensed U.S. providers may be filled at any Military Treatment Facility pharmacy. Contact the pharmacy as soon as possible to determine if your medication is available at the Ramstein clinic or to discuss alternative arrangements.

Self-Initiated Care Kit Program: The S.I.C.K. program is an over-the-counter medication program offered during the Airman & Family Readiness Center’s weekly spouse orientation briefing.

Each participant is provided a kit and educated on utilization of the “Taking Care of Your Child” and “Taking Care of Yourself” handbooks that are included in the kit. After completing the program, members are authorized to choose three OTC medications per month free of charge. The medications that you can choose from are: • Adult Tylenol 325mg • Infant’s Tylenol Drops • Children’s Tylenol Liquid Suspension • Children’s Tylenol 80mg Chewable • Children’s Ibuprofen Suspension • Sudafed Liquid • Sudafed 30mg Tablets • Claritin 10mg Tablet • Dimetapp Elixir • Robitussin Syrup • Robitussin DM Syrup • Bacitracin Ointment • Hydro-Cortisone 1 percent cream • Saline Nose Spray • Benadryl Liquid Drug Take Back Program: The 86th MDG pharmacy is dedicated to making our homes and communities safer while at the same time promoting a clean environment by providing a Medication Take Back program. Members may

bring their old, expired, unused or unwanted medication to the pharmacy for disposal any day the clinic is open. The medication disposal bin is located in the Ramstein pharmacy lobby, Bldg. 2114, Room 105. In addition, we participate in the National Drug Take Back Day, which is held twice a year.

Refill Prescriptions: We offer two pick-up options for medication refill. Refills can be picked up at the Ramstein pharmacy located in Bldg. 2115, Room 105, or at the automated ScriptCenter located in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. The first time you use the ScriptCenter, you must have your refill number and you will be prompted to set up an account. The advantage of using ScriptCenter is you can access your refills at any time as the KMCC is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To refill prescriptions at any Ramstein location, call 06371-86-5601 and follow the instructions.

German Prescriptions: A prescription written by a German provider may be filled at your MTF or at a TRICARE network German pharmacy.

New USAFE/AFAFRICA command chief shares simple philosophy

by Master Sgt. Norris I. Agnew U.S. Air Forces in Europe/ Air Forces Africa Public Affairs To hear Chief Master Sgt. Craig A. Adams tell it, he’s just a simple man. But there is nothing simple about the leadership role he recently assumed.

As the new command chief for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, Adams now serves as the senior enlisted adviser for more than 36,000 personnel spread throughout an area spanning three continents and covering more than 19 million square miles. This role makes him the right-hand man to the USAFE/AFAFRICA commander, Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, in all matters related to the health and readiness of every Airman and civilian working within the two air components.

And that’s not all. He

also assumes responsibility for enlisted theater security engagement and building partnership capacity activities with 28 NATO nations and 22 Partnership for Peace countries in support of U.S. European Command’s Theater Security Cooperation objectives.

Overwhelming? Not to Adams.

“I see it as more of an honor and a privilege that General

Breedlove chose me as his teammate to be a champion of Airmen and their families,” said the 25-year Air Force veteran from Tiffin, Ohio. “I wouldn’t use the word ‘overwhelming.’”

That perspective, according to Adams, comes from a simple observation.

“I am surrounded by absolutely amazing people,” he said. “I feel energy from our Airmen, and I feel our folks are motivated; they truly want to succeed. And I sense a pride in what they do, which is warming and impressive.

It’s an incredible responsibility to support two combatant commands, but our Airmen are up to that challenge. We have amazing Airmen, and I’m very proud of what they do every single day.”

Such an impressive force, said Adams, deserves engaged leadership.

“In this digital age, analog leadership is even more important,” he said. “Whenever pos-

sible, leaders need to be eyeto-eye and face-to-face with their Airmen. I understand and appreciate the fact everyone is busy,” Adams continued. “But we simply need to make the time for things that are important. Knowing our Airmen is important. Taking care of our Airmen and their families is important.”

Adams underscores the importance of maintaining a professional force by referring to it as a family business, a term that resonates with the Buckeye fan who followed his brother into the Air Force in 1987.

“This nametape means a lot,” he said, pointing to the name “Adams” on the right side of his ABU blouse. “But this service tape means a lot as well,” he continued as he pointed to the words “U.S. Air Force” on his left side.

“They both embody a sense of family.”

And for his new USAFE and AFAFRICA family, Adams

has some simple advice.

“Be prepared and be ready, professionally and personally,” he said. “Take care of yourselves, your families and each other. Never hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Do your best every single day and success will follow.

“No matter the job, we have to be all in and be the best at what we do every single day,” he stressed. “If we do that, we win. Pure and simple.”

21st TSC tree lighting ceremonies

Two 21st Theater Sustainment Command tree lighting ceremonies are scheduled to take place in the KMC. The Sembach Kaserne tree lighting will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Sembach Chapel. Entertainment will be provided by the U.S. Army Europe Band’s brass quartet and the Sembach Community youth chorus. There will be refreshments, and Santa is scheduled to make an appearance. Panzer Kaserne will conduct its tree lighting at 4 p.m. Thursday on the Panzer Parade Field. Tax center needs volunteers

The 2012 tax season is almost here and the Ramstein Tax Center is looking for volunteers who have a desire to assist others in preparing their taxes. Last year, due in large part to

volunteers, the tax center was able to assist nearly 1,000 clients in preparing their returns and saved them more than $90,000 in tax filing fees. Volunteers may be officers, enlisted, civilian employees, dependents or retirees. The only other requirement is a true desire to help others. No previous tax experience is needed.

Training will be provided through online IRS lessons in conjunction with a specialized, yet understandable, course on tax return preparation put on by members of the Ramstein Legal Office in early January. This informative course will focus on the basics of preparing a return and on specific tax issues that we face living overseas and being associated with the military. nition portion with a brief overview of the command’s involvement over the past few months. Activities included the recent NATO Air Chiefs Symposium and Regional Air Chiefs Conference, which highlighted air mobility, NCO training and ISR capabilities to NATO and West African air chiefs.

The majority of the call focused on a theme Breedlove said he will continue to use when talking about being a responsible Airman: “Every Airman a Sensor.”

He said fighter aircraft have many tools to track, identify and even destroy a target including GPS navigation, radar, or a laser targeting pod. During a mission, flight conditions determine which sensors will be used to find a target, so all sensors should be prepared to respond.

He said Airmen should think along similar lines within the workplace to help identify potential threats.

“The first thing we can do in this battle is to think of every one of us as a sensor in the workplace,” the general said. “I believe that when an Airman, NCO or officer is having a problem that could eventually end up in a suicide – almost every time – the people around that person will first notice or begin to worry about the possibility the person will hurt himself.”

The general stressed that being a sensor includes all employees, not only military personnel. It is Airmen with a big “A,” military and civilian personnel, who are responsible for staying alert for signs of suicidal intentions.

Breedlove said that vigilance is important in other areas as well.

“When it comes to sexual assault I believe the same is true,” he said. The bottom line is offenders in sexual assault are often predators by nature. “If you believe the statistics,… there are predators standing amongst us today,…. these people have wrong thoughts and will use offensive tactics to have their way with our fellow Airmen.”

He said Airmen need to watch for the signs and report them.

“Quite frankly we have enough enemies in this world,” Breedlove said. “What we don’t need is Airmen with predatory behavior against other Airmen. It is my belief that in most cases we know who these predatory Airmen are and we don’t need them in our Air Force.”

Adams reinforced the general’s message. He said supervisors need to know their Airmen, get in their business and ask questions, and be aggressive about it.

“This is a family business,” the chief said.

“There’s no place in our Air Force for sexual assaults or suicides. This is our problem to solve.”

“I think an Airman who has the guts to stand up for a fellow Airman is a hero,” Breedlove said. “Be a hero.”

Breedlove and Adams finished the call by answering questions from the audience including one concerning possible impacts of sequestration.

“I echo what our Air Force leadership has said; there will be no hollow force,” the general said. “We may have to become smaller, but we will maintain a well-trained and superbly capable military.”

Law enforcement makes KMC safe for children Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Security Forces Squadron, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron and the local Air Force Office of Special Investigations detachment have recently combined efforts to make the community safer for children.

Various briefings, the KMC Neighborhood Watch Program, and the child supervision matrix are some examples of how this joint force has been providing increased security for the KMC. Referrals are made through the KMC first sergeants as well as private self-nominations. The recommended ages of participants are 0 to 15 years old.

Self-nominations can be made by contacting the Airman & Family Readiness Center.

“I think the Angel Tree is phenomenal and a great program Air Force wide,” said Dana Doan, A&FRC consultant, “We all have times that are tight when finances are low, so I think when that happens a family can look at this and know that during the holiday season their child won’t go without.”

To help spread holiday cheer to a family in need, donate at one of the 10 trees in the KMC. Locations include the Ramstein North and South Chapels, Ramstein Express, Ramstein and Vogelweh commissaries, as well as the Vogelweh Chapel and shoppette.

Each tree is set up at a different location and is sponsored by either an individual unit or by a private organization.

To donate, take an envelope from a tree and then return it with a gift card or cash enclosed to any of the tree locations by Dec. 13. Distribution of the gift cards to the families will be completed by the first sergeants.

Taylor 21st TSC Public Affairs U.S. Army Africa and 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 5th Quartermaster Detachment jointly conducted an aerial delivery familiarization event Nov. 5 to 8 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks with U.S., African and Italian soldiers.

The purpose of the familiarization was to refine and rehearse aerial delivery tactics, techniques and procedures to be applied during two major upcoming exercises — Central Accord 13 and Flintlock 13.

African partnership nations participating in the event were Cameroon and Mauritania.

There were representatives from the Italian Army as well as U.S. Soldiers from 824th Quartermaster Company, 10th Special Forces Group, 560th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and 11th Aviation Brigade.

“I think this familiarization is a great opportunity, because it allows us to associate soldiers from partnership nations with low-cost, low-altitude delivery system prior to the exercise, which makes things easier. It’s also good to meet with some of the soldiers we will be working side-by-side with during the exercise and build a relationship with them,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Orlando Velez, an airdrop assistant technician for 5th QM aerial delivery section.

“This familiarization is important, because instead of 5th QM showing up in Africa during the exercise and taking two weeks to familiarize 50 soldiers about LCLA, they had the opportunity to familiarize a handful of Soldiers who now can take what they’ve learned back and teach their people prior to the exercise,” said Walter L. Murrell, an exercise planner for USARAF. During the four-day event, 5th QMs introduced partnership nation soldiers to the LCLA delivery system. They, along with U.S. Soldiers, were subsequently introduced to the free-drop-delivery system.

The Low-Cost Aerial Delivery System is a suite of expendable parachute and container air items designed to be a lowcost alternative to older aerial delivery equipment.

The system can be used for either lowvelocity (descent rate of 28.5 feet per second or less) or high-velocity (descent rate of 50-90 feet per second) airdrop of all classes of supply from typical container delivery system altitudes and payloads.

LCLA parachutes are a specialized subset of LCADS and have the same

low-cost, expendable attributes. They are uniquely suited to support Soldiers operating in harsh, austere locations, such as the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan.

LCLA capabilities are designed for delivering payloads between 80 and 1,000 pounds at altitudes below 500 feet above ground level. LCLA is a one-time use system.

The FDS is one facet of LCLA aerial resupply that requires no parachute.

Instead, FDS is an innovative packaging system whereby supplies can be free dropped at low altitudes.

According to Murrell, learning the low-cost process of getting supplies to soldiers engaged in operations is very important to partnership nations.

“This familiarization is specifically good for our special forces, said Cpt. Adgnau Babe, a soldier with the Mauritanian army. “We like the material we were introduced to, because it’s new and efficient, and it’s a good way to deliver assistance to our soldiers.”

“I am glad we had the opportunity to learn about this new system, and now I

will take what I have learned back to my superiors and tell them how much this could help us in our future operations,” said Sgt. Maj. Roberto Bose, an Italian special forces soldier.

Participants also received a small portion of pathfinder training and were allowed to apply what they learned about aerial delivery systems as they set it up and broke it down several times.

Towards the end of the familiarization, partnership soldiers prepared and assembled four LCLA system bundles and on the final day, they watched exactly how the systems worked as it was dropped from a C-130 Hercules.

“This whole experience for me was fantastic, because I feel like I’ve learned so much in so little time,” said Adjutant Chief Nagi Linegih El-Mamy, a soldier with the Mauritanian army. “It was also good to see the professionalism of the U.S. Soldiers and see a well trained Army that is really proud of the job they do.”

Murrell said, based off feedback from after-action reviews completed by Soldiers who participated in previous familiarization events, USARAF determined this familiarization event was essential to the success of the upcoming Central Accord 13 and Flintlock 13 aerial exercises.

“The intent of this entire event is for partner nations to carry forward with the knowledge they learned and go back and train their Soldiers,” Murrell said.

“I have no doubt in my mind that what we’ve learned over these past few days can greatly help us make things easier for future missions, and I will definitely ensure I pass what I have learned to my fellow soldiers as we prepare for exercise Flintlock 13,” El-Mamy said.

CFC-O goal surpassed by $84,000

by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 2012 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas ended Nov. 16 with the Airmen of Team Ramstein raising $750,296 — $84,796 more than the original goal.

The CFC-O is an annual event where service members and civilian personnel can contribute to thousands of charities that help those in need around the world.

“This year’s campaign was completely successful,” said Capt. David Milodragovich, one of two CFC-O representatives for Team Ramstein.

“We provided a surplus of donations, which is a good testament to how good of a campaign we had this year.

Last year, for example, an extension was needed to meet the goal set.”

However, a successful campaign is not without a few challenges.

“There were some roadblocks in the beginning of this year’s campaign,” Milodragovich said. “The start of the campaign was affected by real-world operations and an (operational readiness exercise). These events slowed, but didn’t completely hinder our campaign.”

Success of the CFC-O is

driven by unit representatives, who strive to ensure they contact 100 percent of the personnel they’re responsible for during the campaign. The representatives are selected from volunteers throughout units, some wanted to help a larger cause; others were aided by the assorted charities found in the CFC-O and wanted to give back.

because they are seeing huge results as they turn over the mission to an Afghan Army that is large and well equipped,” said Westphal on Nov. 23 during an AFN interview at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at the conclusion of his trip.

Their work also includes working alongside an Afghan police force that Westphal said is probably the strongest link in fighting the Taliban. “As we leave, we are leaving it to an Afghan Army that is strong and solid.”

On a similar note, Westphal addressed the transformation of U.S. Army in Europe as part of the overall reduction of military forces and withdrawal of Soldiers in Europe.

Although the Army presence in Europe is growing smaller, Westphal said Europe remains an important and critical ally and that the U.S. is unquestionably linked to its NATO partners.

Westphal said he does not foresee further reduction in forces for the Army unless necessitated by significant future budget cuts.

as well. Especially during this time of year, it is dark when we arrive and leave for work. You need to be wearing something that enables us to easily identify you. Crosswalks do not guarantee safe passage. As the user of said passage, make sure you make eye contact with each driver before you step out, and, more importantly, make sure they stop! I was in a crosswalk right by the Burger King drive-thru exit on Spangdahlem. The driver looked right at me, stopped, looked to his left so he could make his right turn and then proceeded. He must have forgotten I was there, because I ended up on his hood kissing his windshield.

Fortunately, I wasn’t injured and got a free breakfast out of the deal. The important thing to note is he looked right at me but it didn’t register in his head. Wait for the eye contact, the acknowledgment and the vehicle(s) to stop.

I normally do not like to lump motorcyclists and bicyclists, and I guess I have to include the “tricyclists,” but the bottom line is you folks do not have much protection. I am a motorcycle rider of 22 years, and I cannot stress the importance of being seen, dressing appropriately and having good situational awareness of your riding environment. You really have to pay attention to everything that is going on around you, because it is usually our four-wheeled friends who report that they did not see us.

This may come off as one guys’ driverisms to some; however, I can assure you that I am looking after everyone’s safety and well-being. When we are over here, we have to adapt to our host nation’s rules of the road, but at the same time, still practice our style of driving back in the states. It is easy to adapt to some of the local driving customs, but I must tell you that approaching another vehicle at a high rate of speed and driving a car length or two off their bumper is not the best technique to get the vehicle to move over. Back home, that will likely get you some form of sign language and perhaps some verbal feedback as well. Eventually, most of us will return back stateside. They do not drive like this back home. It is your responsibility to adhere to the local driving laws as well as the laws on base.

Here are some other considerations: Pay attention to what is going on. The weather is changing and freezing temperatures are upon us, so plan accordingly. You might have to leave earlier. If you are going to be late, then be late and take one on the chin. Remember, when on base, there’s no need for speeding. Slow it down, let’s merge together, and pay close attention to the surroundings. I do not want to limit this to the holiday season. This is something that we need to keep on top of yearround. We all know the slogan, “Fit to Fight,” so let’s practice “Fit to Drive” in every aspect.

Army plans to increase its role in the Pacific, said Westphal. PACOM is not new to the Army, but its mission will include strategic changes among U.S. forces and allies.

One thing that never changes regardless where his travels take him, said Westphal, is the Army commitment in taking care of its Wounded Warriors. When asked about the prioritization of medical care for Wounded Warriors as the Army faces budget constraints and possible sequestration, Westphal said that commitment “is a priority — not a negotiated priority.

A wound to a Soldier is a wound to the Army. A wound to the Army is a wound to the nation. We’ll never compromise our care for our wounded warriors.”

Westphal said he always makes a stop at LRMC when in Europe because “it’s so important to connect with wounded warriors no matter where you are in the world.” Westphal praised the continuum of military medical care from combat zones, to LRMC, to long-term definitive care at stateside hospitals, such as Walter Reed.

Milodragovich said this was his first time as a CFC-O representative and although there were things that took getting used to, it was a good experience for him.

“This was my first time helping lead the campaign, things would get interesting trying to get information from some representatives or get information out to the representatives, but in the end things turned out well,” Milodragovich said.

“There are 58 different units just from the 86th Airlift Wing, on top of that there are approximately 80 combined throughout Ramstein that we were responsible for.”

For Jones, this was his second time being a representative and although he admits the first time wasn’t a great success, he had a better time being a representative this year.

“This was my second time being a CFC-O representative. The first time was in 2003 when I was stationed here for the first time,” Jones said. “I did not do as well then, but it definitely gave me some experience on raising funds.

“This time around I had great support and had 100 percent of my squadron donate. I would be a representative again,” he added.

“I would like someone else to follow up on what I have done and hopefully they can do a better job, but if not I will answer the call!”

erman and American military representatives from Baumholder and city officials came together to pay their respects to the victims of both world wars and of terror and violence on Germany’s national day of mourning Nov. 18.

Shrugging off the brisk November weather they laid wreaths at the Baumholder cemetery, the memorial in Erzweiler and at the U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder headquarters.

The memorial in Erzweiler dates back to 1957.

Lt. Col. Michael D. Sullivan, USAG Baumholder commander, and Command Sgt. Major Augustus Wah, together with Peter Lang, Baumholder city and district mayor, and Lt. Col. Ingo Osbahr, German Military Training Area commander, gathered at the memorial for fallen Soldiers in the city cemetery and laid the first wreath. Other officials present included representatives of the German reservists of Baumholder area, representatives of the Baumholder shooting club, and representatives of the German Association for disabled veterans.

the memorial in front of the USAG Baumholder headquarters.

Sullivan spoke to the guests about remembering the fallen. “It is important for our two communities to remember those who lost their life for our countries. We will honor their memory, their bravery and the sacrifices they have made.”

American Legion post remembers those who served

Graves of U.S. service members buried in the KMC are not forgotten, thanks to an effort by the local American Legion post.

Each year, in fact, legionnaires from Kaiserslautern Post GR01 place U.S. flags beside their headstones. Most were veterans who married a German spouse and remained in Germany after their service was done. Their graves are in Kaiserslautern, Landstuhl, Morlautern, Siegelbach, Schwedelbach, Otterberg, Otterbach and Ramstein.

“To register a grave, a U.S. flag is placed on the graves of veterans, their family members, and any other U.S. personnel that are buried in the cemeteries,” said Demetrius R. White, the post commander.

If there was flag already there, it’s collected and replaced. The old flags are retired during an annual Flag Day ceremony each June 14. They record the information so the grave can be found again later on.

Robert Leist, a civilian employee at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, and

local legionnaires Michael Young, Joseph Chonko, David Sears, and Djuan Stenson also took part.

“Partnering in community service has been the key to the program’s success,” White said.

Several organizations support the effort, including the Boy Scouts of America, local fraternity and sorority chapters, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

They begin their effort in October, with the goal of visiting each U.S. grave by Veterans Day. Some served in World War II. Others were in Vietnam. Some serve during peacetime.

Whatever the case, they deserve respect, Leist said.

Some graves are military style headstones. Others are German graves inscribed with details of the veteran’s service.

“One was a guy who earned the Silver Star and the Purple Heart in Vietnam,” said Leist, a former Army noncommissioned officer who served eight years in the military police, two of those spent deployed to Iraq.

It’s the first time Leist took part, he said.

“We opened up this new annex to help alleviate some of the congestion from the Northside Post Office and

to give our Airmen in the dormitories a location close by where they could mail their letters and parcels,” Supinger said.

Now that the annex is open, the Southside of Ramstein has a fullyfunctioning post office just like its Northern counterpart.

“Having the new annex open is more convenient for the Airmen because of its location. It keeps them from having to walk or get a ride to the Northside Post Office if they don’t have a car,” said Senior Airman Nikeen Coleman, 86th CS postal specialist.

With these new services available, Airmen here can mail packages faster and more efficiently than before.

The new Southside Postal Finance Annex is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It is located across from the Southside Post Office in Bldg. 2410 behind the Service Credit Union.

Sister before self by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs he day he found out about his sister’s condition, he knew he would go through any lengths necessary to help her.

Now seven months later, Tech. Sgt. Simon Garcia, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron project manager, is scheduled to fly home Dec. 1 and enter the last phase of a major operation — kidney transplant.

“I was notified about it and immediately I knew it was probably going to be me (who would be a match), I don’t know why or how, so I started the process,” he said.

Garcia knew there would be some special considerations about organ donation in the Air Force so he began researching.

“I’ve never known anyone who had to go through the process of being a match. It was a big learning curve for me and my leadership,” said the veteran cable dog. “(I) heard some rumors of people’s minimal experience with the process. In the beginning it was daunting, but the more and more I dug with DOD policies and working my way down, everything (the policies) say is without coercion they encourage people to be donors whether that (is) blood or organs or bone marrow.”

Garcia began medical tests “in correspondence.”

He underwent procedures locally like DNA tests and CT scans, and sent results for analysis where his sister was being treated.

He received some outside help when his commander put him in contact with two wing commanders at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, who had also gone through the process of preparing for a kidney donation.

“We reached out to (the wing commanders) and they emailed Sgt. Garcia back and encouraged him,”

said Maj. Angela Freeman, 1st CMXS commander.

“From the time I let my leadership know, they were on board with it and were fully supportive. I’m thankful for that,” said Garcia, recalling Freeman’s actions and also how his first sergeant had even walked around the base hospital asking questions for more information.

Through his persistence, Garcia was able to find a source who could guide him through the entire process when he met Senior Master Sgt. Jessica Dunn, 86th Medical Support Squadron TRICARE operations and patient administration flight superintendent. “(Dunn) was able to answer a lot of questions and point me in the right direction,” Garcia said.

Although this was Dunn’s first time encountering a request for kidney donation, she was able to assist Garcia with the approval process up to the Air Force Medical Operations Agency.

“AFMOA oversees the execution of the Air Force Surgeon General policy,” Dunn said. “My role is to ensure the member receives the appropriate AFIs/ guidance … and make sure all the information that I can foresee the reviewing authority may ask (is available).”

According to the office of the Air Force Surgeon General, there are approximately 10 organ donation requests per year that are approved through AFMOA. However, approval to undergo the procedure does not excuse Airmen from potential risks to their health or career.

“I counseled (Garcia) about the elective treatment and his subsequent ineligibility for disability compensation for any adverse residuals incurred secondary to the elective treatment,” Dunn said. “If he’s on a long-term profile, he may need to go through the medical evaluation board.”

With the surgery scheduled for mid-December, Garcia is expected to have a full recovery, but risks are still a factor. With the possibility of complications resulting in removal from the military, the 15-year technical sergeant is steadfast in his decision to press forward with the procedure.

“My primary focus right now is my sister, so I mean (my career) kind of comes second,” he said.

“I’ve been (in the military) going on 15 (years) so if it’s time for me to make a change, then it’s time.”

Garcia has no question about his motivation to step in and help his sister.

“She’s kind of like my second mom,” he said.

“I have a small window, so I need to get this done and move out. I want to get (my sister) better … but I guess it’s just the military mindset.”

“She took care of (my family), cooked for us even at a young age ... even when I joined the military.”

With this bond to his sister, Garcia explains that it’s hard to see her in this state, admitting he would not have coped so well if he were facing the same challenges.

Even with the surgery on his mind, his biggest concern is to get his sister better and move on to his next duty station.

“I have my moments where I do get nervous when I think about it, but I’m so distracted by the logistics of it,” Garcia said. “I have a small window, so I need to get this done and move out. I want to get (my sister) better … but I guess it’s just the military mindset.”

For others who may face the decision or challenges coming with an organ donation, Garcia offers this advice: “Stay adamant and stay patient. It’ll work itself out.”

Officials: Remove unauthorized decals from private vehicles

by U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs HEIDELBERG, Germany — U.S. European Command antiterrorism officials want to remind U.S. forces personnel stationed in Europe to avoid being targeted by terrorist or criminal forces by blending in and not standing out from the crowd.

One way to do that is to remove decals and stickers that identify a privately owned vehicle as belonging to an American.

Army in Europe Regulation 190-1 (Driver and Vehicle Requirements and the Installation Traffic Code for the U.S. Forces in Germany), which applies to forces stationed in Germany, states that installation and Department of Defense decals not issued in Europe, such as installation access stickers issued at bases in the U.S., must be removed from vehicles before they are registered in Europe.

Displaying decals, stickers or banners on USAREUR-registered vehicles other than those authorized may result in cancellation of a vehicle’s registration, failure of the mechanical inspection, or both. Additionally, displaying license plates or decals in violation of AER 190-1 is a traffic violation that can result in a driver having two points assessed to his license.

The only emblems authorized for display on USAREUR-registered vehicles are: • Installation verification decals issued to employees of non-DoD agencies who work on or have routine access to U.S. military installations • German environmental emissions control decals • Handicap parking permits • European highway vignettes indicating that

‘It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play’ opens at Hilltop Theater

T

he holidays are fast approaching, but before you get caught up in the holiday rush, indulge yourself in a warm, fuzzy Christmas story to remind you what the season is really

about.

As its name suggests, “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” is a stage adaptation of the heartwarming Christmas classic presented as a 1940s radio show broadcast in front of a live studio audience.

The Baumholder Hilltop has transformed its theater into a fun and nostalgic Armed Forces Network radio broadcasting studio — 1940s style.

The normally behind-the-scenes happenings are at center stage, giving the audience a glimpse of a world they typically don’t get to see. Onstage, five actors and a sound-effects person deliver the lines of all the characters and produce organic sound effects.

The story is familiar to most of us. George Bailey is a man who has given up his dreams in order to help others. As George is preparing to commit suicide on Christmas Eve, figuring his life insurance is worth more than his life, his guardian angel, Clarence, intervenes and shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his community would be had he never been born.

The cast and crew from both Baumholder and Kaiserslautern are rehearsing long hours in preparation.

Little Teeth Big Smiles keeps children grinning Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A young boy ran the toothbrush under the water then applied the toothpaste and began to brush his teeth in circular motions, just like the dentist taught him. On his tiptoes and outstretched, he could barely see his reflection as he opened wide to brush his back teeth.

“The lady told me to make sure I brush my teeth everyday and showed me how to floss with string so I have my teeth for forever,” said Kai Kramer, 9, son of Master Sgt. Randall Kramer, 86th Medical Support Squadron.

More than 100 other children 10 years old and younger attended the Little Teeth Big Smiles outreach program at the dental clinic Nov. 17 on Ramstein.

“This program was started because Ramstein covers a large community and we don’t get a chance to see as many family members as we would like,” said Capt. Erin McNamara, 86th Dental Squadron general dentist.

The event is held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The program was started to ensure children are kept up to date with their X-rays and teeth cleaning. For infants and toddlers, well-baby exams are done.

“It’s important to teach young children good habits like showing them how to properly brush and floss,” said Staff Sgt. Misty Claar, 86th DS NCOIC of pediatric dentistry. “(Seven is the age) when a child should be able to brush their teeth on their own.”

Many kids grow up fearing the dentist, Claar said.

“It’s my main objective to help kids get over their fear by making this a fun day,” Claar said. “We joke with the kids and make their time here a fun one.”

She said different techniques at home can help children with their brushing behavior.

Showing children how to brush their teeth and then positively reinforcing good teeth cleaning behavior is a good technique.

At the end of their visit, each child received a goodie bag with a toothbrush, dental floss, a sticker and a pamphlet of information.

“We have been getting a lot of feedback from parents saying that it has been very convenient to have this done on a Saturday,” Claar said. “Most parents work during the week, so it is great to be able to do this for them.”

Getting ready for an event like this takes some time and planning, McNamara said.

“A couple months out we have to coordinate with the schools to make sure there aren’t any major events going on that day,” McNamara said. “Then about a month out we start advertising for it and the week of we get the goodie bags set up and make sure all the supplies are where they need to be.”

If you didn’t get the chance to attend this latest Little Teeth Big Smiles event, there will be one held in the spring.

After rinsing his mouth out with water, the boy smiled big in the mirror, showing off his pearly whites and grinning from ear to ear knowing that he was taking good care of his teeth.

A

n air evacuation nurse with the Canadian forces deployed to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as part of the casualty support team recently visited children at Smith Elementary School on Smith Barracks but instead of focusing on her job Capt. Denise Olson talked to the children about bagpipes.

“I’m here today at the school because I’m actually instructing three of the teachers here on how to play the bagpipes,” Olson said.

Her talent is in high demand wherever she goes, especially during holidays like Memorial Day or Veterans Day. “(Veterans Day is) a very busy day for me for piping, so I asked the teachers if they would like me to come and speak to the children a little bit about this day and about poppies and why it’s kind of a special day,” she said.

Dressed in her kilt and piping uniform, Olson fielded questions from the children about everything from what was inside the “bag” to what the decorations on her uniform were. Of course, she also played for the children who were surprised to learn how loud the pipes sounded in their school library.

Olson has been playing the pipes for 35 years and says that her hobby actually paid for her college and nursing school. For six summers she had a job on the Cabot Trail, a tourist location in Nova Scotia.

“I didn’t have to look for any other job. That was my job, eight to nine hours a day, playing the bagpipes for visitors to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, and it paid for university and nursing school,” she said.

She became interested in bag piping through highland dancing when she was 7 years old.

“At the age of 10 I thought, well, I’m already dancing to the music, I’d like to learn how to play it,” she said.

Olson comes from a very musical family. Her father plays several instruments and so do her uncles.

“I’d already started to take piano so I was very interested in music. It has been fantastic,” Olson said.

Olson has been in Germany for six months and will be flying back to Canada soon. Reflecting on her career and time in Germany she said, “I’ve been in the military for 22 years and I’ll see what happens when I go back. It’s been a fantastic deployment and I’ve been very fortunate to be in Germany and to have the opportunity to continue my piping.

I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to speak to the children today about the bagpipes and about Veterans Day or Remembrance Day in the common wealth, and its significance.”

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that allows the body to use glucose for energy.

Nearly 26 million children and adults in the U.S. — 8.3 percent of the population have diabetes including 5.7 million who don’t know it.

One in three Americans and one in two minorities born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

What are the types of diabetes?

There are two main types of diabetes, Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes usually develops in childhood.

Type 2 diabetes which accounts for almost 90 percent of all cases usually occurs in the people over 45 years of age and is more common in overweight people.

What increases your risk of getting diabetes?

The major risk factor for type 1 diabetes is a family history diabetes and certain viruses.

The risk factors for type 2 diabetes are: older age,

overweight or obesity, pre-diabetes, family history, prior history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, race and ethnicity.

Heart disease, stroke, eye disease (glaucoma, cataracts, blindness), nerve damage, and gum disease are some of the complications of diabetes.

What are the common signs and symptoms of diabetes?

The most common symptoms are increased thirst and urination, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, tingling or loss of feeling in hands and feet, slow-healing sores or frequent infections and erectile dysfunction.

How can I reduce the risk of complications?

Schedule regular checkups, including yearly physicals and eye exams, routine dental appointments, annual vaccines and perform daily foot exams. Set your personal goals and review recommended goals for diabetes self-management action plan with your health care provider and/or disease manager.

What can you do to prevent diabetes?

There is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes.

Keeping an ideal body weight and an active lifestyle may prevent type 2 diabetes.

Monitor your blood pressure, take your medications and self-monitor your blood sugar as directed by your health care provider.

Stop smoking and learn coping methods to manage stress.

To prevent short and long term complications of diabetes, visit your health care provider or diabetes educator at least four times a year and talk about any problems you are having.

Christmas markets offer unique gifts, musical entertainment

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In Germany, Christmas markets are special highlights taking place during the pre-Christmas time, also known as Advent. The Christmas market season just started in the majority of towns and cities.

Villages usually choose one Advent weekend to hold their markets.

The history of Christmas markets dates back to the 14th century. After farmers had sold their crop, they paid their workers. After attending worship services during Advent, those workers spent their money right away at little markets set up around the church. The most common items offered were sweets and toys. Also, craftsmen selling baskets, pottery, spices, clothes and Christmas tree ornaments were available.

Today, most Christmas market-goers just want to enjoy the atmosphere and taste the typical goodies such as roasted chestnuts, cinnamon waffles, potato pancakes and Thüringer bratwurst. Shoppers getting cold, should take a break and taste a cup of “Glühwein” to warm up. Glühwein is a heated mostly red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks.

Those who are interested in buying some unique Christmas decorations find vendors selling a variety of candles, angels, Advent wreaths, Christmas pyramids and nutcrackers. Other shoppers needing special Christmas gifts have a choice of handmade pottery, handcrafted leather items, glass products, jewelry, wooden toys and puppets.

Besides food and merchandise, Christmas markets feature daily activities, musical entertainment, merry-go-rounds, appearances by Santa Claus, and in some towns there are set-ups of living nativity scenes.

Generally, most Christmas markets in bigger towns open at 10 or 11 a.m. and close between 7 and 10 p.m. depending on the day of week. The markets in little villages usually don’t start until the early afternoon.

The E-Street Cafe is just one of Ramstein’s places to obtain the desired cup of joe. With friendly service and a full menu of seasonal delights, it’s hard not to stop in for a morning or afternoon treat.

“We often cater to the request of our customers, you want it: we make

it,” says Alex Flaugher, E-Street Cafe barista. “Most times individuals just take the menu drinks and add flavors and ingredients until it’s all their own. Making a special drink is fun and really easy, we already have the supplies and we like to experiment. “ The E-Street Cafe has around 600 purchases a day and an estimated one million customers per year.

Not only do they have a wide selection of cold and hot beverages, they also have a selection of food and desserts; to include wraps, bagels, muffins and a variety of cheesecakes.

Specials for the holiday seasons include a variety of fall and winter themed drinks.

“The E-Street Cafe is my early morning life saver,” said Dennise Everheart, a Black Friday shopping enthusiast. “With all the seasonal flavors they added to the specials, there’s no better way to get me up and ready for the holidays.”

Not only do they spread the season cheer to all they serve, they also make time to serve the community.

Last month was breast cancer awareness month, said Michael Forcier, 86th Force Support Squadron.

The E-Club Cafe was dedicated to the cause by selling shirts and other supportive merchandise, which allowed all the money raised to be donated to the cause.

“Base support or community involvement, call it what you will,” said Flaugher. “Our team tries to do as much as we can with our customers and the Ramstein community.”

The E Street Cafe is located in the Ramstein Enlisted Club.

Hours of operation are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

rid-iron supremacy was on the line as the 435th Security Forces Squadron, 30th Medical Command and four teams from the 18th Military Police Brigade battled in the second annual inter-service Sembach Flag Football Championship, Nov 18.

The Air Force was denied winning the title for the second year in a row by the 92nd MP Co., which pulled out a 15-8 victory, allowing the Army to claim bragging rights for another year.

In the inaugural tournament last year, the 435th SFS beat the Army to begin a rivalry that is not only in the spirit of competition but has strengthened the partnership between the military police and the security forces.

“I love the Air Force versus Army rivalry … it’s a good time,” said Bryan Meraz from the 435th SFS. This tournament was arranged with

the intent to bring a fun and entertaining event to the Soldiers, Airmen and families of Sembach’s growing community.

This year’s tournament had a slight change, as it began in multiple locations — Daenner Kaserne and Sembach Kaserne.

The 435th SFS earned the right to play in the championship game with a triple overtime 32-31 victory over the 230th MP Co. in the first semifinal game. In the second semifinal, the 92nd MP Co., stationed in Baumholder, defeated the 30th MED COM, 15-8.

“We had six teams in a really tight tournament. It began with group play … group one played on Sembach and group two played at Daenner,” said Jeff Thomas, an operations specialist with the 18th MP Bde. After the group play, the top teams remaining were the 435th SFS, 230th MP Company, 92nd MP Co., and new to Sembach, 30th MED COM. There are plans to continue these tournaments in sports such as football, baseball and basketball.

Wrestling referees needed again this year

by Meghan Augsburger Ramstein High School intern The wrestling referee is one of the most important figures on the mat for both the flow of the matches and safety of the wrestlers. Every year, many forget the importance of the wrestling officials at high school meets. Many criticize their performance and question their intentions.

Those who comment may not fully understand the commitment these referees make or how much they care for the safety and well being of the wrestlers.

On any given Saturday during wrestling season, officials give up their time to allow ath-

letes to compete. Conditions aren’t always easy, referee Brian Augsburger said.

“The first time I was out there, it was a long day,” he said. “I left at 4 (a.m.) and got home around 10 (p.m.) that night. I was exhausted but I really enjoy it.”

In general, four venues are in session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Referees arrive earlier in order to weigh in the wrestlers and get the meet started on time. Once the meet starts, the action is almost non-stop.

Referees trade off with each other and officiate roughly 50 matches per meet. The number of refs available at each meet has a direct bearing on how many matches they officiate.

With only seven refs signed up for this season, their workload is likely to increase significantly.

This problem can be solved though; the Kaiserslautern Officials Association is looking for interested volunteers who love the sport.

In order to become a wrestling referee, those interested are required to attend a KOA sponsored clinic. However, becoming proficient and confident in the sport comes with experience.

“It takes a lot of confidence and courage to step on a wrestling mat and officiate, but it is very important for the safety of the wrestlers that you are not afraid to stop the match at any time,”

said Jason Ille, a KOA official.

Over time, officiating matches becomes less intimidating and more enjoyable.

“There’s a lot of interaction with the kids, other referees, and some of the coaches.”

Augsburger says. Officials often recognize and chat with wrestlers who have participated in years before.

As far as questions on the intentions or bias of the referees, parents and athletes need to realize that many of them have no affiliation with any of the schools. These officials are out there because they love the sport and want to provide the wrestlers a chance to compete. Without them, meets would be officiated by

Cross country Ramstein High School cross country and track runners were well represented at the Potzberglauf road race, which was held Nov. 10. The course started in the village of Gimsbach and climbed 342 meters vertical in 8.2 km to finish at the summit of Potzberg. Finishing first in his age group was Josh McDowell, in a time of 47:09. Finishing third in his age group was Galen McCarver, in a time of 46:39. Matt McDowell finished fourth in his age group in a time of 48:23. Physics teacher and assistant cross country and track coach Dennis Edwards finished third in his age group in a time of 42:53.

The Landstuhl running association LLG will sponsor its 24th Christmas run Sunday. The 1,300meter children’s run will begin at 12:30 p.m., and the 7.6-kilometer main run is scheduled for 1 p.m. The route will be made up of three 2-km loops around the Christmas market in Landstuhl.

Starting point will be the Sickingensporthalle (gym) on Kaiserstrasse 128.

The finish line will be at the Christmas market, in front of VR Bank. The children run is for children of any age, from bambini to 15 years old. The main run is for participants older than 15. Baumholder’s Jingle Bell Jog

The Jingle Bell Jog takes place Dec. 7 at the Hall of Champions Fitness Center in Baumholder.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the jog starts at 9.
