Fire Prevention Week Story and photos by Senior Airman Andrew Bertain 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron showcase their abilities to put out a fire on a training aircraft while hosting an open house at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 21. The 86th CES invited the Kaiserslautern Military Community and local partners to the open house to spread awareness of fire safety while cooking this coming holiday season.

Fire Prevention Week is an annual event aimed at raising awareness about fire safety, and this year, the U.S. Air Force is actively promoting cooking safety. The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention,” emphasizing the crucial role individuals play in safeguarding their homes this coming holiday season. Cooking fires represent the number one cause of home fires and home injuries, making it vital for Team Ramstein to be wellinformed and proactive in preventing kitchen-related fires. To address this issue, the Air Force is urging the community to adopt essential fire safety practices in their kitchens. See FIRE PREVENTION, Pages 16-17

RAMSTEIN CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH

How software updates, patches keep your computer safe Courtesy article We are all quite familiar with the situation. We log into our computers to work, read emails, or simply browse the web when suddenly, we receive a pop-up message informing us that it’s once again time to update our computer’s software. Ideally, we update the software and restart our computers right away. Realistically, we schedule it for another time or simply ignore the recommendation. This decision can lead to vulnerabilities being exploited, which can have devastating outcomes for the end user. So, what exactly are software updates and patches and what can happen if we ignore these recommendations from the operating system? This along with some best practices on how to keep your system and data safe are topics we will cover in this year’s Cyber Awareness Month. Since 2004, the President of the United States and Congress have declared the month of October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month. A month dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. As we celebrate the 20th annual Cyber security Awareness Month, the 86 Com munications Squadron Wing Cybersecurity Office is launching a new awareness program encouraging four simple steps that every individual can take to stay safe online. These are not just actions for Cybersecurity Awareness Month but steps we should all follow every day throughout the year. One of the most important of these, is software updates and system patching. What are software updates and patches? General software updates can include a variety of different features that will improve, fix, and replace older versions of the same software. Patches are updates that address specific issues to improve the usability, performance, or security of a program.

Why do software updates and patches need to be installed? Software updates and patches need to be installed as soon as possible to protect your computer, phone, or other digital device against attackers who aim to take advantage of system vulnerabilities. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends that individuals enable automatic updates so these are installed as soon as they are available. Leaving the system unpatched or out-of-date, can lead to the compromise of data and with computer attacks becoming more and more sophisticated, it is crucial to do everything in your power to protect your data. During 2022, the worldwide number of malware attacks reached 5.5 billion, an increase of two percent compared to the preceding year. In recent years, the highest number of malware attacks was detected in 2018, when 10.5 billion such attacks were reported across the globe. Where do I get software updates/patches? Software updates should only be downloaded from trusted vendor websites. Links in emails should not be used since these can link users to websites that then host malicious files disguised as legitimate updates. Most supported operating systems will receive vendor updates that mitigate vulnerabilities, however when these reach end of support, these updates will stop, opening the system up for exploitation. Users should update their systems and be aware of when vendors will cease to provide platform support. Best practices for software updates • Enable automatic software updates whenever possible. This will ensure that software updates are installed as quickly as possible • Do not use unsupported end-of-life software • Always visit vendor sites directly rather

visit a website, your browser sends this cookie back to the server to provide it with information. Avoiding suspicious websites can limit any vulnerabilities posed by cookies and if you are prompted to accept cookies, the safest option is always “deny.” » Clear browser cache: Accident ally navigating to an unsecure site may make your system vulnerable and clearing your browser cache can limit the potential to accidentally return. Your browser history functions to help you remember previous web pages, while a cache helps speed up your device’s memory of visiting that site. Steps to clearing your cache depends on the Operating System used as well as the browsing platform.

than clicking on advertisements or email links • Avoid software updates while using untrusted networks What actions can I take? The actions and decisions users can take to deter hackers and cybercriminals are not always as complicated as some might think and, in most cases, only take minimal time and effort. This is a small price to pay compared to the devastating effect that data loss can have on businesses and personal livelihoods. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and National Cybersecurity Alliance have highlighted vital action steps that everyone should take. 5 Things you can do: 1. Think before you click: Recognize and Report Phishing: If a link looks a little off, think before you click. It could be an attempt to get sensitive information or install malware. 2. Update your software: Don’t delay — If you see a software update notification, act promptly. Better yet, turn on automatic updates. 3. Use strong passwords: Use long, unique, and randomly generated passwords. Use password managers to generate and remember different, complex passwords for each account. A password manager will encrypt passwords securing them for you! 4. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA): You need more than a password to protect your online accounts, and enabling MFA makes you significantly less likely to get hacked. 5. Clear browser cache and cookies: » Cookies are small files created by websites you visit to hold information about your online activity generally designed to help improve user experience. Whenever you

More tips to keep yourself safe: • Change your password every so often – at least every six months • Have your password be complex, and use different passwords for different accounts • Keep your personal information personal (i.e., Birthday, Mother’s maiden name, favorite color, favorite movie) • Be wary of the apps you download and only download trusted, reliable apps – be sure to review the permissions you allow the app • Utilize a multi-factor authentication method (i.e., password and code sent to the email or phone number) What are some indicators of malicious software on your system? • Your internet searches are redirected • You see frequent, random pop-ups • Your friends receive social media invitations from you that you didn’t send • Your online password isn’t working • You observe unexpected software installs • You receive notifications of logins from unknown devices or locations • Your system slows down, and you notice programs crashing unexpectedly

On-/off-base clothes dryer safety Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues. There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers. » For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!! » These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window. » For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month. More safety tips: » Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

» » » »

Regularly clean the lint filter. Never place plastic articles in the dryer. Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use. Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc. » Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual. » Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered. » Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed. If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510. Fact: The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failing to clean or maintain them properly.

MAINZ, — The Ministry of the Interior and for Sports hosted a German-American Day celebration at the state chancellery commemorating German-American relations and the transatlantic partnership within the state, Oct. 12. Germantown in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was founded Oct. 6, 1683, by German and Dutch settlers. Today, about 17 percent of Americans have German ancestry.

In 1983 former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Oct. 6 as German-American Day to celebrate and honor the 300th anniversary of German immigration and culture in the United States. In a formal ceremony Reagan called on Americans to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Michael Ebling, Secretary of the Interior and for Sports RheinlandPfalz, invited key leaders in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to take part in this year’s ceremony.

A U.S and a Rheinland-Pfalz flag decorate a table at a German-American Day celebration in Mainz, Oct. 12. The flags are a symbol of three centuries of German-American and transatlantic ties.

Ebling underlined the significance of close ties to U.S. forces with their presence over seven decades, and how this shaped relations within the state in his speech. Norman Thatcher Scharpf, U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt consul general, commended the role of the strong transatlantic relationship for three centuries. Prior to the festive ceremony, a panel discussion took place with members of various agencies, such as the Atlantic Academy in Kaiserslautern, Polizei Rheinland-

Pfalz and the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt. The discussion centered around transatlantic relationships over decades. Additionally, Roberto Saldanha da Costa, 86th Airlift Wing Host Nation advisor, gave an overview of past situations, such as the COVID19 pandemic, Operation Allies Welcome and the war in Ukraine, and described how building and sustaining strong, resilient partnerships can withstand such circumstances. In a discussion hosted by David

Sirakov, Atlantic Academy director, Da Costa also stressed the significance of grassroots initiatives like the WiR! program. The WiR! program is a state initiative to promote and maintain German-American relations in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. It is partnered with the GermanAmerican Community Office in Kaiserslautern. The evening was rounded off with musical entertainment and an opportunity to meet and greet military and civilian key players.

Dutch military, contractors provide port assistance for incoming US aviation brigade

A UH-60 Blackhawk belonging to 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade is downloaded from ARC Endurance at the port of Vlissingen, Netherlands, Oct 17. Aircraft, vehicles, and equipment arrived in theater for a rotational deployment to build readiness, increase interoperability and enhance the bond between ally and partner militaries using multinational training events.

by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command

VLISSINGEN, NETHERLANDS – More than 40 aircraft and hundreds of U.S. Army equipment pieces and vehicles from 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade were received by 39th Transportation Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, with the support of Dutch military and civilian contractors at the port of Vlissingen, Netherlands, on Oct. 17. Port operations took place day and night by 635th Transportation Detachment, 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), 1st ID CAB, and Dutch personnel to download Blackhawks, Apaches, Chinooks, Humvees, other wheeled vehicles, and equipment from the commercial cargo vessel, ARC Endurance. U.S. Army Capt. Matthew DeGennaro, commander, 635th Transportation Detachment, 39th Transportation Battalion, spoke highly about his efficient team. “We have some Soldiers where this is their first mission. So, it’s been a really rewarding experience being able to see my more senior NCO’s mentor my junior Soldiers and teach them how to do their MOS (military occupation-

al specialty) specific tasks,” said DeGennaro. DeGennaro’s Soldiers effectively execute reception, staging, and onward movement by scanning all items coming off the vessel, safely guiding vehicles to staging areas, and ensuring customs forms are prepared correctly. In January this year, the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team came through the port of Vlissingen, and now, the host nation is showing their extended capabilities by supporting an aviation brigade. Vlissingen’s accessibility and onward movement modality versatility helps maintain and enhance levels of readiness, provide operational flexibility, and develop relationships. Netherlands Armed Forces Maj. Willibrord Voets, officer in charge, said the open communication between U.S. troops, civilian contractors, and their military allows the operation to run smoothly and builds trust. Air Force, Army, and drone detection support was provided by Dutch military to ensure the port’s security and arrange the operation’s facilities and life support areas. “It’s really a team effort across everybody from the Dutch to the Americans. It’s a great experience,” said 1st Lt. Christine Martin,

port officer in charge, 635th Transportation Detachment. The aviation brigade from Ft. Riley, Kansas, is part of a rotational deployment, replacing 3rd ID CAB, who is exiting the theater later this year. About 270 1st ID CAB Soldiers were on-site at the port to assist operations and guide and assemble their aircraft. Maintenance and tests were conducted on aircraft before they flew to their final destinations, and all other vehicles and equipment will be transferred by commercial line haul. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command is U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s lead organization for all sustainment activities including logistics support, transportation, combat sustainment, human resources, finance, contracting and all other areas in the field of sustainment. The command also serves as the responsible headquarters for USAREUR-AF’s military police, medical and sustainment brigades, providing combat engineers, military police and medical professionals during partnership training and other operations in support of not only USAREURAF, but also NATO, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Central Command. Tiger Team stacks it up Story and photos by Kathleen Sevigny Sembach Elememtary School On Saturday, Oct. 21, Sembach Elementary students participated in the Offener Hessen Speed Stacking tournament in Stockstadt. 126 stackers from Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Japan were there to show off their skills. What is speed stacking? It is a fun sport where you stack specially designed cups up and down in a specific pattern as fast as possible. Cup stacking uses both sides of the brain and is great for hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity. Participants race against the clock or other stackers. There are individual, doubles, and team events. It is a Junior Olympics event and has been featured on the Tonight Show, in the NY Times, and as a challenge on the Amazing Race. The novice Sembach Tigers team had time to get in a few practice rounds before the competition began. Each team member put forth their best Tiger effort and the excitement of the tournament atmosphere helped them to score their personal best times. Louis Kelly took 2nd place in the 3-3-3 category and the 3-6-3 category. Sofia Castro took 3rd place in the 3-3-3 and 3-6-3. And Lilliyana Desancic placed 3rd in the Cycle category. We are very proud of our whole Tiger Team and look forward to the German Nationals which will be held in Speicherdorf in November. Go Tigers!

CMSAF meets high-speed recruiters, Sorensen team at motorsport drifting event

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass takes a selfie with Branden and Amanda Sorensen, Air Force Recruiting Service-sponsored drivers, in front of the U.S. Air Force recruiting booth during a Formula Drift event at the Irwindale Speedway, Calif., Oct. 14. The Sorensen’s spent time at the recruiting booth where they met with fans and Airmen while promoting the USAF to the crowd.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Colin Hollowell Headquarters Air Force Recruiting Service

IRWINDALE, CALIF. — It wasn’t just any other day in beautiful Southern California. A sunny, picturesque day with temperatures in the low 80s. If you didn’t know any better, you would have thought that a fog had rolled in just as the festivities had begun. But no, that smoke accompanied by the distinct scent of burnt rubber is exactly why thousands of fans congregated together at the Irwindale Speedway; it was race day. Motorsport fans traveled from all over to attend the Formula Drift event, Oct. 14. U.S. Air Force recruiters with the 369th Recruiting Squadron, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves spent the morning showing the F-16 Fighting Falcon static display that sat to the left of the hangar, an interactive recruiting asset that allows the public to try their hand at three Air Force specialties; aircraft maintenance, metal fabrication and a virtual reality simulation of in-flight refueling operations. The recruiting setup drew attention from a variety of patrons, but it isn’t every day when the Air Force’s highest enlisted leader pays a visit. Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass’ first stop of the day was spent meeting recruiters who

were supporting the event, where she had the opportunity to recognize a few Airmen who had been identified by 369th RCS leadership as superior performers. “These three individuals have really embraced the challenges that we have faced in the Air Force Recruiting Service this year,” said Chief Master Sgt. Jeff Kelloway, 369th RCS senior enlisted leader. “They have really strived to master their craft and improve their skills, and really have exceeded on all fronts this year despite those challenges; we couldn’t be more impressed with their actions and what they have accomplished.” Tech. Sgt. Aaron Munoz-Case, one of the three recruiters recognized, was celebrated by his leadership for his initiative to lean into utilizing social media to reach a wider audience, something that Bass shared that she can relate to.

Munoz-Case said he was excited to meet a senior leader who understands the value of social media as a communication platform. “I really appreciate that she recognizes the need for Air Force recruiters and leaders to have a digital footprint,” Munoz-Case said. “I think it helps us reach potential applicants from all walks of life and allows us to connect with communities who may not know what being an Airman is all about.” Munoz-Case said that her recognition motivated him but he was especially inspired after she joined their team to interact with Formula Drift patrons. Bass spent time sharing her Air Force story and conversing with several of the motorsports fans who took the time to stop in and experience the recruiting booth. After talking with several potential future Airmen, Bass was in for a

thrill as she continued to her next stop of the day’s events. Bass met with Amanda Sorensen, AFRS-sponsored driver, who daringly invited her to join in a joyride in the Air Force-branded, high-performance stock car. Sorensen showcased her professional driving abilities by expertly balancing speed and control while drifting around the track, filling the stadium with the smoke and aroma of burnt rubber. Sorensen exited the track to drive Bass to meet her brother, Branden, who is also an AFRS-sponsored Formula Drift driver, at the recruiting booth where the trio met fans and signed autographs. Among the fans in the crowd were an especially proud group of soon-to-be Airmen and their families. Bass took a moment to personally congratulate the young men and women who were minutes away from reciting the oath of enlistment on the track during the evening’s opening ceremony. Following the opening ceremo-

ny, the crowd roared with a combination of praise for the patriotic introduction and excitement for the day’s main event. Bass finished the evening enjoying the Formula Drift event, but she spent the day experiencing something uniquely special. Bass witnessed two key moments in the recruiting process; an applicant’s introduction to the Air Force and the recruit’s reciting the oath that every enlisted service member, past, present and future decrees to gain admittance into the armed services. “It was really inspiring to get to spend time with our recruiters who are out there looking for the next generation of Airmen,” Bass said. “I particularly enjoyed having the opportunity to meet some of their recruits and hear their ‘why’ before watching those 18 young men and women raise their right hands and make that commitment in front of 45,000 fans. It’s a reminder to everyone of what makes us the world’s greatest Air Force.”

Story and graphic by German American Community Office This week’s topic is about turning at traffic lights. In Germany it is a bit different than in the U.S., but don’t worry, we’ve got your back. There are two different green arrows that indicate how and when you can make a turn at a red light. Scenario 1: Red traffic light and green metal arrow. In this scenario, you are allowed to make a right turn on the right lane even though the traffic light is red. You do not have to, though! When you do, your car must come to a standstill at the line for 3 seconds and you need to yield to other participants in traffic. Pay special attention to other cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. If there is no danger to other members of traffic, you can make the turn.

Scenario 2: Red traffic light and green light arrow. In this scenario, you can make a right turn without stopping at the line. This green light arrow also gives you the right of way and you do not have to yield to other members of traffic. Scenario 3: Red traffic light and no arrow. Whenever there is a red traffic light that does not have a green arrow attached, you can not make a right turn. You have to stop at the traffic light until it turns green. Once the light turns green, you can make a turn but have to yield to oncoming straight traffic.

As always, not adhering to German traffic regulations is fined. Up to €70 and one point against your license if you don’t stop at the line in the metal arrow scenario 1. If you endanger someone, the fine goes up. At least €118.50 and one point against your license if you run a red light. If you endanger other traffic, fines go up and your license will be suspended. As snow, ice and a cold season is coming around the bend, next week we’ll discuss driving in winter and the importance of appropriate tires.

Fire Prevention Week FIRE PREVENTION from Page 1 “The leading cause of cooking fires is unattended cooking, so we would like to remind people to stay in the kitchen and to set timers,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Taylor Leuck, Kaiserslautern Military Community Fire and Emergency Services noncommissioned officer in charge of fire prevention. In case of a fire in a pot or pan on the stove, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the top and turning off the burner. Should a fire erupt in the oven, Leuck advises to turn off the heat and keep the door closed to contain the flames.

However, safety always takes precedence. If there is any uncertainty about handling a small fire, the KMC Fire and Emergency Services underlines the importance of evacuating the premises immediately and reaching out for professional assistance. “Safety is our number one concern,” Leuck said. “If you have any doubt about combating a small fire, immediately leave your house and call 06371-47-112 to contact our emergency dispatch center.” For any further questions involving fire safety, the Air Force recommends visiting the National Fire Protection Agency website for invaluable information offering a wealth of cooking and fire safety tips.

ABC IN KMC: November Notions by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A kindergarten kid proudly presents a handcrafted lantern at St. Martin’s parade.

The month of November tends to be rather foggy, rainy and windy. However, a few events can light up the season and bring color to dreary days. Allerheiligen For Germans in the region November kicks off with a public holiday. All Saints’ Day is a religious celebration and public holiday in many parts of the nation. As its name suggests, the Catholic Church honors not only its well-known saints, but also the women and men who had secretly lived and defended their beliefs, and proclaimed the Christian message, but were not officially canonized. During the course of the first decades after Christ, it became increasingly difficult to individually honor each saint with a celebration. As early as in the fourth century, an annual celebration was then held the first Sunday after Pentecost in honor of all of them. At the end of the eighth century,

the religious celebration was moved to Nov. 1 in Ireland, which coincides with the Celtic New Year and marks the beginning of winter. This tradition eventually spread to the European continent. A modern tradition is to decorate graves of deceased with driedflower bouquets, wreaths or flower bowls and cover existing plants with fir branches to protect against frost. So-called grave or eternal lights with candles are also placed on graves in memory of beloved family members. All Saints’ Day is celebrated on Nov. 1 in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria as

a public holiday with all stores and public offices being closed. Other German states in the northern and eastern regions as well as Hessen celebrate “Refor mationstag” (Reformation Day) in honor of Martin Luther, initiator of the Protestant Reformation, on Tuesday, Oct. 31 instead. St. Martin Although not a public holiday, another exciting event takes place on the evening on or about Nov. 11. St. Martin might ride through your town on a white horse and bring joy to children. Saint Martin of Tours in France figures prominently

in the development of Christianity in fourth-century Europe. This gentle, humble servant, known best for helping those most in need, was chosen by the people of Tours as their spiritual leader, and is considered to be the patron saint of all children. Tradition has it that children in the region build and decorate lanterns in his honor. They parade through towns singing “Laterne, Laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne…(Lantern, lantern, sun, moon and stars…). Many villages organize cheerful parades and music with children carrying their colorful hand-made lanterns bringing light into the dark. This may be an inspiration for creative activities at pre-school or elementary school in the KMC, as villages are thrilled to share the event with other children. Show off your handcraft skills, join in the fun and grab the opportunity to meet other neighborhood kids. There may be bonfires with food and drinks as well as pretzels for kids in your village. Check your local “Amtsblatt” for exact dates and event times in your individual community.

National Day of Mourning On a more solemn note, Sunday, Nov. 19, is observed as the National Day of Mourning in commemoration of members of the armed forces of all nations and civilians who died in armed conflicts. This includes fallen soldiers of both world wars, recent armed conflicts, and civilian victims of armed aggression. Every year U.S. Army and Air Force leadership representatives lay wreaths during ceremonies at cemeteries within the KMC along with their German counterparts. Advent This year the Advent season, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, starts on Sunday, Dec. 3. However, many Christmas markets in the area start in late November, such as in Kaiserslautern on Nov. 27. Colorful lights and decorations, sweets and treats at the markets are sure to make your mouth water and brighten up your evenings. Stay tuned for a full list of German and neighboring country markets in the Nov. 24 edition.

On the Wilderness Trail Eifel National Park’s straightforwardly named Wilderness Trail is special. Rare for this part of Germany, it offers an 85-kilometer trail that can be finished in four days. Which means, of course, that backpackers can take the time to immerse themselves in meadows and forests while sleeping under the stars. Walking the Wilderness Trail also allows visitors to get a deep sense of what makes the park special. Founded in 2004, it is technically a “National Park in development,” which means that the land in the park is in the process of reverting to full wilderness. The park’s motto, in fact, is “Let nature be nature.” Why is this cool? For starters, a big part of the park was once the Vogelsang Military Training Area, used by NATO forces until 2005. Thus, it was not wildly natural. Which makes the park’s motto all the more meaningful, since nature is recovering rapidly right now. Forests are growing back. Birds and mammals returning to forests. It’s happening fast, too: nearly 60 percent of the park has returned to its native state. This is a great chance to see what “nature being nature” looks like. However, don’t let the wilderness tempt you away from the trail. Since this was once a military training area, there is still unexploded ordinance in the area. Trail markers are clear and warnings are frequent. Make sure you pay attention to them! The beauty of a dark sky Have you ever seen a map of Europe at night? This is a very well lighted continent,

which isn’t a bad thing. But it does mean that we rarely get to see a lot of stars when we live here. Not so in Eifel National Park, which was recently classified as the first International Dark Sky Park in Germany. Nighttime visitors (on clear nights, of course) are in for a treat. You’ll see stars that you didn’t know existed, as well as the full beauty of the Milky Way. There is also an observatory nearby that regularly organizes astronomy workshops, which can be a lot of fun for families. It’s also illuminating in different ways: sometimes it’s reassuring to know that there’s a massive, dazzling universe out there. Eifel National Park in a day For day trippers, the park is a great choice. Admission to the park is free. You

can take your time driving through it. You can also bring your bike or a good pair of walking shoes, since there are more

than 200 kilometers of wilderness trails. The landscapes are fantastic. You’ll find rivers, forests, meadows, rolling hills, and occasionally challenging walks. There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, too. The park is home to red deer, wild boar, wild cats (a threatened species, and super cool to spot if you can find one…but don’t worry, they’re not much larger than house cats), rare bats, lizards, birds, and much more. There are also a variety of activities for families, including guided walking tours, a junior ranger program, and a “Dreams of Wilderness” exhibition (with an entrance fee) that is open daily. The park website offers maps and tips for visitors. Getting to Eifel National Park By car, Eifel National Park is approxi mately 2.5 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and about 4.5 hours from Stuttgart.
