three-person team from the Norwegian armed forces medical branch visited aeromedical evacuation assets assigned on Ramstein Oct. 2 to 4. The visit helped the Norwegian team get an overview of how the U.S. Air Force’s AE and critical care aeromedical transportation process works. The visit was aimed at ensuring the Norwegian CCAT team is aware of current practices prior to launching their own CCAT mission later this year. The tour included visits to see a C-130J Super Hercules in its AE configuration, seeing patients being loaded into a C-17 Globemaster III, a visit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a stop at the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility and See VISIT, Page 3

Season brings safety to forefront by Col. Leslie Smith 86th Airlift Wing vice commander Now that the warm days of summer are quickly becoming a distant memory, the coolness of October reminds us it is time to start planning for a safe winter. As crazy as the weather can be here, it’s never too soon to make sure you’re ready. One of the most important safety issues is winter driving. In Germany, road traffic laws require drivers to adjust car equipment for the weather conditions; this includes having snow or all-weather tires on their vehicles. Failure to do so can result in additional fines from the police. A well-equipped
car ready for winter will also have antifreeze topped off, and at a minimum a windshield scraper, flashlight, blankets and a tool kit. Safety isn’t just for the road; it’s also something to be mindful in the home. Winterizing your home not only makes it safer, but you can save money, too. You should have heating systems checked, seal any drafts and be mindful of the thermostat. Doing so will not only reduce the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, but lower your utility bills. October also marks a noticeable increase in hours of darkness. Airmen should break out their reflective belts and wear them during inclement weather and reduced
visibility. This applies not only in uniform, but also during physical training. It’s not a fashion statement, but it is another way to make sure you’re seen by drivers. Additionally, Ramstein is within a short drive of some of the best winter sports and outdoor activities anywhere. Before engaging in some winter fun, use good risk management and take appropriate safety precautions. Remember you can’t expect to be in late-season form the first day out on the ski slopes. Using the proper protective equipment, checking the condition of your gear and following good commonsense practices can reduce the potential for accidents and injuries.
Finally, you can’t think about October without Halloween. It’s a great time in the KMC, but I challenge you to make sure it’s safe for everyone. If you’re driving in areas where trick-or-treating is happening, especially on base, make sure you’re extra observant for kids who may be more interested in scoring more candy than their surroundings. Parents, a flashlight and reflective gear can be a lifesaver here. Fall and winter produces some of the most picturesque moments here in Germany, but we need to be safe to make sure we are around to enjoy them. Planning ahead and having a proactive safety mindset can do just that.

host-nation support in the Logistics Directorate of the Romania Ministry of National Defense and NTC forum permanent secretary. The NTCC took several recent actions designed to improve hostnation support processes. Since March, the NTCC has established a database to capture host-nation support “best practices” developed by its members in support of International Security Assistance Force/Operation Enduring Freedom. The committee also developed an action plan designed to strengthen interagency coordination in order to more efficiently respond to civil emergencies. The NTCC decided to participate in a NATO Logistics GTS host-nation support software development program. The NTC Steering Committee decided that implementing the program would increase NTCC capabilities and improve its manner of conducting business. The ongoing projects aim to improve the way the NTCC conducts business through revised guidelines and a more robust communication plan. Improved technology and Webbased tools will expedite the communication strategy. NTCC members also emphasized the importance of expanding the knowledge management network by connecting the NTCC to NATO host-nation support agencies and VISIT, from Page 1

Steven Guillen, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa AE functional area manager. “It’s important for us to know how the other operates just in case our paths cross again.” Ramstein was chosen for the visit due to the frequency of AE movements through the area. “We know the U.S. has a lot of patients and does this mission on a near daily basis,” said 1st Lt. Erik Holmstron, Norwegian armed forces medical branch paramedic. “Although we aren’t as busy, we want our AE and CCAT

Eddie Mertens, a native of Voeren, Belgium. “We must put together an effort to facilitate hostnation support. We need to work less on the formal — and concentrate more on the informal — ways to support host-nations.” The NTCC’s informal status allows it the freedom and flexibility to work outside the elaborate framework of bureaucratic regulations that constrain official governmental agencies. It also encouraged members to build valuable personal relationships. “This NTCC created an atmosphere to foster better networking and better interoperability,” said Belgian army Warrant Officer Guy Colman, a native of Flanders, Belgium. The NTC Steering Committee also revised NTCC guidelines on national transportation. The NTCC has expanded threefold since its inception and has actively supported multiple NATO, EU and coalition operations. These operations placed ever-increasing demands on host-nation support resources. “Our fundamental principles are sound,” said Jack Kizler, the 21st TSC assistant chief of staff for CivilMilitary Operations and International Logistics. “However, in revising the guidelines, we will be able to

Crystal Karahan, 86th Medical Group African International Health specialist. “We should take the time to work together if we have the capability to assist other nations build their capability,” Karahan said. “It’s awesome to see someone else get a program where they want it to be.”

Fire Prevention Week Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente (left), 86th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. James Morris, 86th AW command chief, sign the 2013 Fire Prevention Week Proclamation Oct. 4 on Ramstein. This year’s theme of Fire Prevention Week is to stress the dangers of kitchen fires.
Fire escape plans: Get out safely Imagine what it would be like to wake up at night and find your house is on fire. What would you do? Where would you go? Could you get everyone out safely? Do you know that in less than 30 seconds, a small flame can grow completely out of control and turn into a major fire? It only takes minutes for a house to fill with thick, black smoke. In the event of a fire, it’s important to remember every second counts, which is why you and your family must always be prepared. Escape plans help you and your family get out of the home safely. And now that school is back in session, it is time to once again prepare and practice your fire escape plan with everyone in your household, including children and those with disabilities. The National Fire Protection Association offers the following tips to consider when preparing your escape plan: • Bring everyone in the household together and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. If you live in a household with children, consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each
room, including windows and doors.
location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries twice a year.
• Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department and teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them, that way any member of the household can call from a neighbor’s home or a cellular phone once safely outside.
• Always choose the escape route that is safest: the one with the least amount of smoke and heat, but be prepared to escape under toxic smoke if necessary. When you do your fire drill, everyone in the family should practice getting low and going under the smoke to the exit. • If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with the door closed. If possible, place a towel under the door and call the fire department to alert them to your location in the home. Go to the window and signal for help waving a brightcolored cloth or a flashlight. Do not break the window, but open it from the top and bottom. • Choose an outside meeting place (like a neighbor’s house, a light post, mailbox or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the
• Practice your fire escape plan at night and during the daytime. • Be fully prepared for a real fire; when a smoke alarm sounds get out immediately. Once you’re out, stay out. Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues. For more information on fire prevention matters, contact the KMC Fire Prevention Office at 480-5940 or 06371-47-5940. If you live on an Army post, contact Army Fire Prevention at 493-4500. In case of an emergency, dial 1-1-2. (Courtesy of KMC Fire Emergency Services)

435th CRG air advisers conduct master base planning in Bulgaria by Maj. John C. Sherinarian 435th Contingency Response Group Members of the 435th Contingency Response Group conducted an air base master planning event with the Bulgarian air force at Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria, Sept. 16 through 20. The event provided an opportunity to evaluate and assist with current plans and future exercises with the Bulgarian air force. It also built new partnerships and strengthened ones already in place. Four Ramstein Airmen, three from the 435th Air Adviser Branch and the 435th Construction Training Squadron commander, led a familiarization course covering installation development planning concepts. The five-day event supported U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s efforts to improve and integrate Bulgarian air force facilities and equipment, in addition to providing expertise to the Bulgarian air force for the upcoming fourth generation multi-role fighter capability. The air advisers also met with senior leadership at the Ministry of Defense in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, briefing the Bulgarian air force commander on master planning and specific projects to assist how the Bulgarian’s prepare for future training. “It’s a unique opportunity to conduct a mission that assists in the modernization of one of our allied partners,” Tech. Sgt. Brandon Williams, 435th CRG UPGRADE, from Page 2
Maj. Steven Chetelat, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa directorate of communications knowledge operations branch chief, said the migration is required to consolidate USAFE-AFAFRICA’s multiple networks onto the Air Force’s central network known as Air Force Network, or AFNet. “The upgrade is driven by the fact SharePoint 2007 is becoming increasingly difficult to support from a technical and security standpoint,” Chetelat said. While the final leg of the project for the wing is about to start, the actual planning and development for implementation began much earlier and encompasses

air adviser. “This mission will set the table for future missions and have continued positive effects on our partnership for years to come.” The cooperative military event included presentations on the history of the Bulgarian air force and a base tour highlighting potential infrastructure projects. The mutual exchange of ideas and information during this event was important to continued planning and cooperation of U.S. and Bulgarian forces.
the entire command. “We’ve done a lot of planning to carry out the migration and upgrades. All of the command’s SharePoint is hosted at Ramstein, and the migration is by site not by user,” Chetelat said. “The changes will mean when the 86th Mission Support Group undergoes the upgrade, all visitors to the new site will experience it in SharePoint 2010.” The migration for the wing is scheduled to conclude at the end of November. If users encounter problems, they should contact the Enterprise service desk at 480-4357. Additionally, the 86th CS has SharePoint 2010 training available for Ramstein users. To sign up for training, call 480-0984.
“Our objective was to support the Bulgarian air force’s modernization by sharing lessons learned on past Air Force modernization efforts and advising the Bulgarian’s efforts towards projects that provide the greatest long term benefit,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Elliot, 435th CTS commander. In preparation for these missions, 435th CRG air advisers completed more than 120 hours in the formal Air Force Air Adviser course. Subjects covered included advising fundamentals, interagency partnerships, interpreter support, in-country activities, strategic guidance, and cross-cultural communication, among many others. During the event, the air adviser team met with several subject matter experts of the Bulgarian air force, discussing a broad spectrum of topics to include the structure of their military, enlistments, and career progression. They also talked about specific views of their planning process and proposed projects to assist with future multinational exercises. “This event enhanced master planning capabilities and benefits (USAFE-AFAFRICA) by reducing the costs of future military exercises with Bulgaria,” Capt. Justin Rex, 435th CRG air adviser. The Bulgarian mission was another successful event for the dedicated Airmen of the 435th CRG’s air advisor branch. The development and enhancement of a NATO partner aids the Air Force’s goal of building mutually beneficial partnerships.

Saving water creates fluid funds
Potable water by definition is water fit for consumption by humans and animals. Though often taken for granted, access to potable water is crucial for survival and necessary for the mission. Installations within the KMC obtain potable water by either purchasing it from a supplier or through wells pumping water from the ground water reservoir. Whether purchasing potable water or calculating the costs associated with production, it’s clear that water is an expensive, precious resource. The water usage and cost for Air Force facilities and military family housing within the KMC exceeded 500 million gallons and $6 million last year alone. That doesn’t even include the wastewater treatment bill! Every resident within the KMC is responsible for water conservation. Water saving initiatives will not only positively impact our ecological relationship with water sources, but will also result in a significant reduction of utility bills. Common sense and an active concern to save water will markedly reduce consumption without sacrificing cleanliness or interfering with your lifestyle.

Oct. 8, 1919: The first transcontinental air race in the U.S. kicks off. Sixtythree planes competed in the first roundtrip aerial derby between New York and California. The winner of the 5,400-mile race was Lt. Belvin Maynard with a total flight time of 24 hours, 59 minutes, and 49 seconds. Oct. 11, 2002: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Peace Prize “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Oct. 12, 1810: The origin of Oktoberfest starts when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later King Louis I of Bavaria, marries Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to attend the festivities that were held on the fields in front of the city gates. These famous public fields were named Theresienwiese, “Therese’s fields,” in honor of the crown princess, although locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the “Wies’n.” Horse races in the presence of the royal family concluded the popular event, celebrated in varying forms all across the German state of Bavaria. The annual Oktoberfest begins in late September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. More than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually at Oktoberfest.
Air Force Common Acts of Courtesy states that members, regardless of rank, should give the senior person, enlisted or officer, the position of honor when walking, riding or sitting at all times. The junior member should take the position to the left of the senior member. Common acts of courtesy aid in maintaining discipline and promote a smooth conduct of affairs in the military establishment.

Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared pan. • In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/3 cup sugar with the cinnamon. Squeeze lemon juice into a medium bowl. Breaking the chain of infection, injuries Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Holly Mansfield 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Group public health flight is the first line of defense from the world’s smallest insurgents — viral and bacterial terrorist in the form of communicable disease. Keeping the public from receiving infections or diseases is its main priority. In order to give military members and their families safe working environments, clean eating facilities and proper hearing protection for noisy work areas, the flight is broken up into different sections. “We have occupational health, epidemiology, and food safety and sanitation,” said Capt. Amanda Huston, 86th MDG force health management and community health chief. “Each section helps prevent the spread of disease by catching it at the source.” Each unit plays a vital role in keeping military members safe at their job and their eating facilities clean. Breaking the chain of infection is a key factor to staying healthy. Without a safe environment and sanitary food to eat, people would be more vulnerable to catching a virus or developing a physical injury. “We try to break the chain of infection first so Airmen are mission ready at all times,” said Senior Airman Angela Seifert, 86th MDG public health technician. “In epidemiology, we surveillance portable diseases like lime disease, tick viruses and sexually transmitted diseases.” Interviewing patients who think they are showing symptoms of a portable disease and then finding a solution could end the situation before it escalates. In order to stop the illness at its lowest level, patients need to report it when they start showing signs
of infection. “If someone is showing signs of having an infection they can call and schedule an appointment,” Seifert said. “During the appointment, we will interview them to see what exactly is wrong and then determine if they need treatment.” Seeking proper treatment for communicable diseases is extremely important, but it’s not the only danger Airmen of the public health flight want to eradicate. Many Airmen here work in hazardous environments that can pose threats to their health in other ways, such as potential hearing loss. “Out of the 3,800 members in our hearing program, there are 1,800 people who require hearing tests,” said Staff Sgt. Lyndell Logan, 86th MDG NCOIC of occupational health. “We test on average 300 members per month.” Members must receive an initial hearing test prior to starting their job. This test is to collect their beginning hearing scores. “We judge a person’s hearing throughout their career based off the score of their initial hearing test,” Logan said. “A member must take a hearing test every year after their initial test to see if their hearing has gotten worse or stayed the same.” A hearing test lasts for 8 to 12 minutes, but if a person’s hearing has gotten worse they will be looked at further. When this happens it is considered a significant threshold shift. If the hearing is still bad after the follow up test then they may have to take a 14-hour noise free audiogram. “During the audiogram the patient is kept away from loud noises so we can test their hearing even closer,” said Logan. “If their hearing is still bad they may be sent to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for further testing.” Once further testing has been done,

more information for treatment will be given to the patient. A good way to keep problems like this from escalating is to get tested regularly if you work in a noisy work area. This is a method used by the food safety and sanitation office. Random inspections of eating establishments on bases in the KMC give an accurate rating of how safe and clean they are on a daily basis. “We average 50 to 70 random inspections per month,” said Airman 1st Class Christopher Blount, 86th MDG public health technician. “At each inspection, we make sure the facility is compliant with the Food and Drug Administration guidance.” During an inspection, they must make sure the facility is clean and the employees are practicing good food handling techniques, wearing hair nets and gloves, and are of good health while at work. Not meeting the standards is considered a discrepancy. Having too many could be considered a health hazard.
“If a discrepancy can be fixed on site, it will not be counted against them,” Blount said. “We inspect 97 public facilities in the KMC and all temporary food booths that are used at events. We do this to make sure people are getting food that is made and served properly so they don’t get sick.” Along with random food inspections, the food safety and sanitation office also provides food recall information to food distributors and anyone who sells food on base. Giving this information to the distributers could stop consumers from receiving bad food. Whether it’s getting tested for portable diseases, hearing tests or inspecting food establishments on base, the Airmen of the public health flight are here to keep military members, their dependents and civilians healthy. The next time you go to work or out to eat, remember that public health is doing its part to break the chain of infection.

Defense Department bolsters victim advocacy with new initiatives by Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr. American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — The Defense Department continues to take steps to improve victims’ confidence in sexual assault advocacy through a multi-pronged approach, said the deputy director for the Department of Defense’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. Air Force Col. Alan R. Metzler, SAPRO’s deputy director, emphasized that the first step to stopping sexual assault in the military is through prevention and working to reinforce cultural imperatives of mutual trust and respect, team commitment, and professional values. When prevention fails, he said, we have taken steps to improve victims’ confidence and combat under reporting through new measures that went into effect this week. Metzler outlined the DOD Sexual Assault Advocate Certification Program (D-SAACP) and the Defense Sexual Assault
Incident Database, two initiatives set to improve the advocacy services provided to victims of sexual assault. D-SAACP is a training and certification program for Sexual Assault Response Coordinators and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocates. The D-SAACP professionalizes the victim advocacy roles in alignment with national certification standards and standardizes many of the requirements for SARCs and SAPR VAs across the Services. SARCs and VAs play a vital role in supporting victims of sexual assault and are central to commanders’ efforts in building rapport and trust needed to create a cohesive team within every unit. More than 22,000 SARCs and SAPR VAs have completed D-SAACP training and met national certification standards. “Proper training for SARCs and SAPR VAs is critical to ensuring that all SAPR responders are equipped to provide professional and informed advocacy services,” said Metzler. “Victims can be confident they have
access to professional victim advocates and will be treated with dignity and respect throughout their recovery.” In order to apply, SARCs and VAs must submit an application, which requires signing the SARC/SAPR VA Code of Ethics, submitting two letters of recommendation, and completing 32 hours of victim advocacy continuing education training. SARCs and SAPR VAs must re-certify to continue providing victim assistance services every two years. Also, on Oct. 1, the department met Congressional requirements to implement a standardized, centralized, caselevel database which maintains information on sexual assaults. DSAID will serve as the database of record for future reporting. DSAID provides SARCs the enhanced ability to provide comprehensive and standardized victim case management. DSAID will help each Service to more thoroughly assess the effectiveness of their response efforts by providing a better tool to man-
age cases and track referral services for victims of sexual assault. Privacy rules for the database comply with DOD and federal regulations regarding information assurance, privacy, and records management. “Our sexual assault prevention and response program is focused on the concerns and needs of victims and we have worked diligently to improve our system of response,” said Metzler. “We encourage victims to seek help, and we value their decisions and respect their privacy.” The Defense Department, recognizing that increased victim confidence and reporting is “a bridge to greater victim care and offender accountability,” remains committed to prevention of sexual assault and providing comprehensive care to victims of this crime. “The Defense Department, and its leaders, take the crime of sexual assault very seriously,” he said. “We are leading change to create an environment where everyone is safe and victims do not experience retaliation.”
Family Advocacy: Building stronger families by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

ow manning at the office, being in a foreign country or just another late night at work may be normal for some, but add them all together and the stress can become overwhelming. Handling stress is an important part of life and if not handled correctly, it could harm a loved one. That’s where Family Advocacy can help. “Domestic abuse occurs worldwide, including military families,” said Carmen Schott, Family Advocacy outreach manager. “But the only way we can provide help is if they come to us. A person can tell their supervisor they have a medical appointment without revealing it’s with Family Advocacy. Even if we have to call back at your office to speak with you, we do not identify ourselves. We just say that it is the clinic calling.” Going to Family Advocacy before it becomes too much to handle can prevent situations from getting out of control, requiring security forces and leadership to become involved. “Once security forces responds to a domestic violence incident, that service member’s first sergeant is then notified and the member is mandated to come to us for assessment,” Schott said. “The only time we are required to report something is when a patient actually tells us about an instance of abuse or that they are a danger to themselves or others.” In order to avoid mandatory intervention, Family Advocacy also provides courses for those who feel

they need help at home, such as couple communication counseling, stress management, anger management and much more. “The best thing to do is to seek help before an abuse occurs,” Schott said. “We offer many prevention programs, and the most important thing to keep in mind is that domestic violence tends to get
progressively worse in a relationship if intervention isn’t made.” Early intervention is not only important for married couples but for unmarried couples as well. Family Advocacy has changed its policy concerning domestic violence referrals to where a person no longer has to be married for it to be considered domestic violence. “Some of the more frequent cases we see are where the individual won’t allow their partner to leave the home or they were being held against their will during an argument,” said Thea Levine, Family Advocacy victim advocate. “The best thing you can do is to just let your partner leave and take care of the matter once everything has calmed down.” By requiring at least three years experience helping families, counselors have the background needed to provide aid in any situation even if an attack has already been made. “We see strong people fall into abusive relations, and what is difficult is they aren’t being abused by a random attacker, it is the person they love,” Levine said. “These survivors have spent a majority of their life and may even have kids with their abuser; this is what makes taking action so hard for them, and this is where we come in. We provide the counseling to help the survivor, assure them that what happened is not their fault and to give them the hope they need to recover.” To contact Ramstein’s Family Advocacy Program, call 479-2370 or 06371-46-2370. than what the chief actually needs. Q: Why did you want this job? A: I wanted to see a different side of the Air Force. The commander really relies on the command chief, and ultimately, they look out for the Airmen. I wouldn’t have this outlook without the opportunity of having this job. Q: What is your original job?
A: I’ve been personnel for 13 years, and my one year for this special duty is almost over. Q: What is your favorite off-duty activity? A: I like to hang out with my daughter, Cadense, and we watch the TV show “Martin.” She likes to watch scary movies too, but I don’t like them. Q: What is one fact no one would guess about you?
A: I love country music. Brad Paisley is my favorite artist to listen to. Q: Would you recommend this special duty to anyone? A: Yes, I love this job. I always listen to Chief and what he has to say. He’s always black and white and sets the standard for what he expects. Watching him has made me not only a better NCO, but a better overall Airman.

ancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the breast, it is called breast cancer. Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women. Breast cancer screening means checking a woman’s breasts for cancer before she has any symptoms. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to cause symptoms. Most women who are 50 to 74 years old should have a mammogram every two years, according to the CDC. If you
are 40 to 49 years old, or think you may have a higher risk of breast cancer, ask your doctor when to have a screening mammogram. Some things may increase your risk of getting breast cancer. If you have risk factors, you may be more likely to get breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about ways to lower your risk and about screening. Reproductive risk factors include: • Being younger than 12 at your first menstrual period. • Never giving birth, or being older than age 35 at the birth of your first child. • Starting menopause at age 55 or later. • Using hormone replacement therapy. Other risk factors include: • Getting older. See CANCER, Page 18

USO programs help lift spirits Story and photo by Senior Airman Jose L. Leon 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The USO hosted a Stronger Families Seminar for couples looking for help with their relationships Oct. 3 and 4 on Ramstein. Service members encounter diverse conditions, and often, they are affected physically and emotionally. The seminar included several topics designed to help service members and their families cope with some of the negative effects the military life style can have on loved ones, such as different personality types, handling arguments, compromising and many techniques that can be helpful in improving household dynamics. “Our nation’s military families face unprecedented stressors, extended deployments, invisible and visible wounds and the challenges of reintegration,” said Andrea Sok, USO communications manager. These barriers pose a challenge for many within our ranks. Sok reiterated how the USO makes itself available to anyone in need through programs and services. “The USO has made a commitment to be always by the side of these men and women and their families by providing best-in-class programs and services to help them face these challenges,” Sok said. Overcoming these issues is not a simple task and may require outside help. There are many volunteers within the USO who make themselves readily available.
Noel Meader, Stronger Families executive director, instructs facilitators on how to assist with troubled relationships Oct. 2 on Ramstein. Members from the chapel, Family Advocacy, the Airman & Family Readiness Center and other organizations from the KMC attended the facilitator training in order to sharpen their couple counseling skills.
“Delivering the program, the enthusiasm of the recipients; that’s where I get the joy,” said Michael Lewis, USO Europe director of operations. In 2012, the local USO reached approximately 480,000 military members and their families through approximately 520 events.
“USO staff and volunteers make incredible moments happen for our troops and military families every day,” Sok said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.” To contact the USO, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/kaiserslautern.uso or visit them online at www.uso.org.
Community comes together to support 10th AAMDC Soldiers, families Story and photo by Staff Sgt. John Zumer 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Public Affairs Ask military family members about the prospect of their loved one deploying, and the odds are good you’ll be met with a long face. However, Soldiers with the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command recently participated in a readiness fair aiming at easing the pressures often associated with deployment. The Sept. 26 event, officially billed as a Family and Soldier Readiness Fair, brought together more than 25 agencies from across the KMC. The purpose of the event was to bring Soldiers and their families into contact with helpful vendors in preparation for deployment. Among the many agencies present were the USO, Kleber Health Clinic, Edelweiss Lodge Resort and the University of Maryland. One vendor said the numerous agencies and Soldiers under one roof at Armstrong’s Club made for a tremendous success. “It’s been a fantastic day,” said Berniece Jones, president of the
Sgts. 1st Class Stanley Quinn and Michael Browley, Sexual Assault Response Coordinators for 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, speak to a group of Soldiers Sept. 26 at Armstrong’s Club in Kaiserslautern. The Soldiers were participating in a readiness fair that brought together vendors, families and Soldiers to learn about the many agencies available in the KMC to help with numerous issues, including education, shopping and travel.
Kaiserslautern Landstuhl Spouses Association, whose organization spent the afternoon passing out literature to those who filed by. The KLSA, which presently has 80 members, meets regularly to promote friendship and belonging through social activities and community involvement. Along with the other groups
and organizations present, Jones was pleased with having the chance to share KLSA’s mission with others. “We’re just thankful for being able to give to the community and hope to be able to for a long time,” said Jones, citing the more than $100,000 the KLSA has donated this year to deserving groups. Recipients include the USO,
wounded warriors, KMC schools and the Red Cross, among others. For many, it was their first exposure to the offerings available by the many vendors. This proved vital for a deploying Soldier or the family members left behind. “I learned about a lot of new agencies in the community, especially some of the ones affecting the single Soldiers,” said Pfc. Damon Phillips, an early warning systems operator with Bravo Battery, 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, 10th AAMDC. The event was weeks in the making, and the final result was worth it as evidenced by the large amount of people who turned up. “We thought it would be great if we could make it personal and convenient,” said Lori Sweazey, the family readiness support assistant for the 10th AAMDC, and one of the people most responsible for bringing vendors, Soldiers and families together. Sweazey, married to a 10th AAMDC Soldier assigned to the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was thrilled with the turnout. “It really is one-stop shopping,” Sweazey said.

Stay safe this winter by Senior Airman Whitney Stork 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs With the winter months approaching, Airmen are encouraged to take the appropriate precautions at work and at home. There are no specific dates for the winter months; however, the recognized months here in Germany are from October to April. “The first and most important thing is to slow down when driving and walking,” said Staff Sgt. Anthony Little, 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office ground safety technician. “Slowing down is the first key step. You want to make sure you give yourself ample time to get to your destination.” Service members on Ramstein and Vogelweh have the current road conditions posted at the gates and at their disposal on the Ramstein Web page. Service members should be checking these conditions constantly. “Everyone should listen to (Armed Forces Network), check Facebook and look at the weather before they try to go anywhere,” Little said. “They need to stay updated and keep their shops updated so they know what applies to them specifically.” The safety office will also push out additional information to unit safety representatives and use various outlets to get the word out as much as possible, added Staff Sgt. John Paul Diaz, 86th AW Safety Office ground safety technician. Everyone is susceptible to the host nation laws in Germany, which include the winter driving laws. Some of these laws include the following: CANCER, from Page 15 • Not breastfeeding. • A personal history of breast cancer, dense breasts or some other breast problems. • A family history of breast or ovarian cancer (parent, sibling or child). • Changes in your breast cancer-related genes (BRCA1 or BRCA2). • Getting radiation therapy to the breast or chest. • Being overweight, especially after menopause. • Smoking or chewing tobacco. • Drinking three or more alcoholic drinks per week. • Eating a high fat diet. • Sedentary or inactive lifestyle. Note: Some women can have
• When the road is slippery due to snow, ice, slush or frost, the vehicle must have at least all-season tires meeting the European Union directive. • Drivers are required to have anti-freeze solution in the windshield wiper fluid when winter weather threatens to freeze the fluid. • Unnecessary car idling is prohibited under state and local environmental and noise laws as well as traffic law. • Peephole driving is also prohibited. All motorists are responsible for clearing the entire windshield and making sure their view of the road is not being obstructed. This means the front, rear and side windows must be completely cleared of snow and ice. “Car windows have to be completely defrosted and clear of any snow and ice,” Little said. “People who try to ‘peephole’ drive or have sheets of ice fly off of their cars are subject to a variety of penalties and fines.” Along with the perCourtesy graphic sonal responsibility of winter safety, units have to take preventative measures. “All shops have to shovel the sidewalks and entryways of their facilities to prevent mishaps,” Little said. “Every wing has someone qualified as a unit safety representative, and Airmen should contact them for shop specific information.” Units should also be salting the ground to prevent ice from sticking. Each organization should contact their safety representative to get a full list of what is expected of the respective shops. For more information, call 480-SAFE (7233) or 06371-47-7233.

animal may still be alive and kick out, or the animal could be infected with rabies. In Germany, it is considered poaching if somebody takes a deer carcass off the road and brings it home. Doing so can result in the confiscation of the vehicle and a fine. In some cases, a prison sentence of up to five years is possible. If a motorist gets in an accident involving a wild animal, the car owner needs a written confirmation by the police or the game lessee so the comprehensive insurance will pay for the damage. The game lessee follows animal protection laws and is obliged to find the injured animal and put it out of its misery. In 2012, more than 3,000 motorists were involved in animal-related accidents. More than 600 people were severely injured and 20 died. • Autumn is usually the time when black ice first

occurs. Pay special attention to the roadway during this time of the year. • During this time of year, agricultural vehicles often make the roads dirty with gravel and mud, creating dangerous road conditions, especially for motorcyclists. Dirt on the road, mixed with moisture, can create slippery street surfaces. • Heavy winds or storms can also cause road dangers and obstacles. Driving in these elements, motorists should adjust their speed, be careful when passing trucks or busses, and watch for signs on bridges and in forests indicating special weather conditions. Motorists should also refrain from parking under trees during windy or story weather; falling branches can damage vehicles and injure passengers.

Motorists must be extremely careful during fall months by being aware of dangers on the road, including fog, storms, black ice and wildlife crossings. According to the German automobile club and Polizei officials, there are ways to safely get through these seasons. • Whenever there is dense fog, a general rule is to slow down, drive even more carefully and always have the lights turned on. • Adjust your speed to the range of sight. If visibility is only 50 meters ahead, don’t drive faster than 50 kilometers per hour. If it is 100 meters, don’t drive faster than 80 kph, and if visibility is 150 meters, don’t drive faster than 100 kph. • Focus on the safety poles, not the center stripes. The poles on the right side of the road always have rectangular reflectors, and those on the left have two round reflectors. The density of fog can be estimated by the distance of those safety poles. On regular roads, the distance between two poles is 25 meters, and on the autobahn it’s 50 meters. Last year, there were 386 injury accidents related to fog, so motorists should be cautious. • Motorists should also reduce their speed while driving through forest areas. During daylight and dusk hours, wild animals become more active and can dart out in front of vehicles on the road. If wild animals suddenly appear, motorists should brake immediately, turn down the lights and blow the horn. Do not swerve to avoid hitting the animal; swerving can cause the motorist to lose control of the vehicle. On streets with deer crossing traffic signs, motorists should drive cautiously and anticipate any animals that might venture onto the roadway. In the event of an accident with an animal, turn on the warning lights, secure the vehicle, call the police and care for any injured people. The injured or dead animal should never be approached or touched; the

Return of the Raiders
by Sgt. 1st Class John S. Wollaston U.S. Army NATO Brigade Public Affairs
If you look at all the banners hanging in the Kaiserslautern High School gymnasium, you’ll find numerous championships for basketball, baseball, track, volleyball and even a couple of banners for varsity golf championships. Many of them are as recent as last year. Amid those recent tributes to the school’s sports achievements, you will find one lone banner for America’s most popular sport — football. That seminal American sport played on grass and Astroturf every fall from pee wee to the pros has garnered this high school exactly one championship — circa 1980. Thirty-three years is a long time to wait for football glory, no matter how you measure it. That’s 33 senior classes that have passed through KHS without a football championship. The U.S. presidency has changed five times since K-Town hung a football banner from the rafters. In 1980, Dr. Barrett Smith, the current principal of Kaiserslautern High School, was just four years removed from being a student there. And prior to this year, things got even worse, as the varsity
racked up zero wins. Teams started looking at the schedule and chalking up K-town as a win before the game was even played. But something changed this year. Whether it’s the new stadium, the first time in the 60-year history of KHS they’ve had their own facilities, a senior class that has finally said “Enough” or head coach Aaron Scalise’s system fully taking root, the Raiders of Kaiserslautern High School have been able to utter two words not heard in the hallways in a long time. “Winning streak.” From the rubble of what he inherited two years ago, Scalise has begun to build his program on what he calls “1440 football.” That’s how many minutes there are in a day, and that’s how many minutes a day he is committed to making the Raiders a winning team. It is also how many minutes he expects his players to devote to the effort as well. “1440 football is our philosophy, which questions our student athletes, ‘How do you spend your time?’” Scalise said. “If you want to be a great football player, what are you willing to do to become a great football player? If you want to be a great lawyer, an architect or a military leader, what are you willing to do

with your time to maximize your potential?” The belief and dedication is beginning to show results. In their inaugural game at the new stadium, K-Town demolished the local national team from Hanau, 44-0, before a full house. That was the team’s first win of any kind in two years, and the mixture of relief and joy showed not only in the players but the coaches, fans and family members as well. Next was a road game in Vilseck and the first true test of the team’s newfound win-
ning ways. The Raiders found themselves down 13-0 to the Falcons late in the third quarter. Instead of folding or giving up, like past teams would have done, this team dug deep and came from behind to beat the heavily favored Falcon’s 14-13. The team that, prior to kickoff, was overheard being described as “scrubs” by the Falcons’ players, sent the home team and its fans away with what was, for some, their first loss to K-Town in their high school football career. “That victory set the tone for our season. In years past, when we would fall behind early, the game seemingly was over,” Scalise said. “Our comeback win demonstrated a great attitude our student athletes hold, understanding they will battle to the final whistle.” “It feels good. This team has hope now,” said senior linebacker Tyshon Hendrix. “Before, no one wanted to play football because we were losing. Now, everyone is coming out; everyone wants to see the games.” Hendrix said that after two years of playing on teams that racked up no wins, where they are this year isn’t taken for granted in the locker room. “We know what it’s like to be down, and now that we’re coming up. This feels nice,” he said with a smile. “Our
goal was to just make the playoffs. Now, our goal is to be playing on Nov. 6. We’ve just got to take it one step at a time” In addition to the new stadium, new equipment and new winning attitude, this is also the first year since taking over that Scalise feels the team and the system is completely his, he said. “Beyond our new stadium and field and new equipment, the biggest change that has occurred over the past couple of seasons is I finally have ‘my guys.’ The guys in our program this year have only played football for me at KHS,” Scalise said. The Raiders have improved to 4-0 after a narrow road win at Patch in Stuttgart and a win against a second local national team. The Raiders’ record is a spotless 4-0 (2-0 in Division I), and the junior varsity is now 2-0 after defeating the Vilseck and Patch JV squads. “My goal for the varsity team was to make the playoffs and from there, we’ll see what happens. For a team that hasn’t won a game in a long stretch, some people believed this was too lofty a goal,” Scalise said. “We have not reached our goal as of yet, and still have to play some great teams ahead of us. However, we are certainly going to try.”

But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone — tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth — and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may
be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Riddick (R) — The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet. Soon, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.
