86th AW commander reviews new Ramstein app

by Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas 86th Airlift Wing commander In this new age, almost everyone has a smart object of some kind, holding tons of apps — finally Ramstein Air Base has its app.

I recently took it for a test drive.

This new tool from the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Office is an easyto-learn, intuitive workhorse that provides the information you need for life in the KMC right in the palm of your hand.

Ramstein app highlights • It’s free • Everything you need is right in one place • Works with iPhones, Android phones and tablets • Phone directory for Ramstein, Vogelweh and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center • Push notifications provide updates about weather, construction and emergencies directly to your phone • “PCSing?” feature that’s a vital

tool for those who will be moving to or from Ramstein soon • Easy-to-use layout that makes finding what you’re looking for a snap Bottom Line This app will make receiving information faster and easier. It features a phone directory that works offline, force support squadron events, emergency numbers and much more. This information is separated between 12 beautifully designed icons so there is no fumbling to find what you need. These features could prove to be extremely useful for newcomers; I wish I had this information in my pocket when I first arrived to Ramstein.

Top useful features The app is brand new, but a few features jumped out at me right away.

The directory in the app has important numbers for Ramstein, Vogelweh and LRMC conveniently located in an alphabetized list. You just click the name of where you want to call, and

it automatically sets up your phone so all you need to do is push the “call” button. Plus, this feature doesn’t require internet access to work, so it’s available to you anytime, anywhere.

While you travel around and enjoy the wonderful opportunities that Germany and all of Europe have to offer, you will have easy access to make medical appointments, contact travel agencies and so much more.

Another feature is push notifications, labeled only as notifications in the app. This will be particularly useful with the winter season fast approaching because it sends updates directly to your phone. Delayed reporting, school cancellations, safety information and more can be spread en masse almost immediately. It’s the only function on this app that will tell you when there is new information, so your phone won’t constantly be required to download updates.

The Ramstein app isn’t just for those who are already stationed in Germany. With the “PCSing?” feature, it can be a vital tool for those who will be arriving or leaving soon.

Someone who is about to come to Germany will find information about lodging, privately owned vehicle and household goods shipping, travel documents, finance, housing, pets, in-processing, employment opportunities and more. Leaving Ramstein and think this app no longer applies to you? It also offers information for outprocessing, such as a PCS timeline, out-processing phases and an orders checklist, to name a few.

Conclusion The Ramstein app has multiple features that can prove to be indispensable to the user. The directory, notifications and links to dynamic information make this app a must-have for anyone coming, currently staying in or leaving Ramstein. Innovators wanted for 21st century Air Force

COMMENTARY

by Lt. Col. Christian Randall 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron commander U.S. Army General George S. Patton said, “Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.”

The late Patton’s simple but powerful statement on leadership remains relevant to 21st century Airmen. The message serves as a call to innovate, and as a reminder to Air Force leaders, at all levels, the need to foster a culture in which innovative ideas are brought to bear to enhance our service’s capability to “Fly, Fight and Win.” Throughout its rich history, the Air Force has exhibited a culture reflecting a unique mix of innovative spirit and military professionalism.

There is a natural inclination to associate Air Force innovation with the leading-edge technology that drives our nation’s competitive advantage across the domains of air, space and cyberspace.

However, the imaginative spirit found in the design of the latest aircraft, missiles and satellites is equally necessary for transforming outdated business processes, antiquated organiza-

ate innovative change involves the capacity of an individual to view problems from a unique perspective, and the passion to transform the seed of an idea into a viable solution.

The ability to see the world differently demands critical thinking. The effective innovator will challenge the status quo and will question assumptions that others may take for granted.

The effective innovator also focuses on desired outcomes and end-user needs and only then considers creative ways those needs might be met more efficiently.

True innovative spirit also requires passion because development of innovative solutions requires significant individual time and effort. Innovation begins with the question, “Why do we do things this way?” but the journey does not end until an improved, viable solution has been crafted.

The effective innovator considers many options, brings in relevant external expertise, tests proposed solutions and secures organizational buy-in prior to implementation.

Leadership plays a central role in the adoption of innovative ideas. Leaders are charged

Our Air Force is attracting a generation of Airmen that brings new skills, competencies and familiarity with technology. As suggested by Patton, leaders should seek to overcome their personal biases by tapping into the ingenuity of those they lead.

Of course, adoption of innovative ideas often involves risk.

There are plenty of examples of transformational initiatives that have failed; yet as leaders, those failures should serve as learning opportunities and not as excuses to discount innovative opportunities in favor of the status quo.

Innovative spirit and a culture that encourages new ways of accomplishing the mission are both part of the Air Force’s proud heritage. As Airmen, it is incumbent upon each of us to develop an innovative mindset by challenging the status quo and pursuing positive change with passion.

Innovative 21st century Airmen are needed to achieve the Air Force vision, “The World’s Greatest Air Force — Powered by Airmen, Fueled by Innovation.”

hrough thick brush and hilly terrain, 25 security forces members from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa tactically maneuvered down a mountain before taking a village Sept. 26.

Law enforcement participated in a field training exercise, the final test after completing the 21-day Creek Defender course.

After the course, security forces members were placed in a training environment where they traveled two kilometers from their insertion point before putting their newly honed skills to the test.

The course involves two parts: one part for base security sensor operators and leaders, and a second part in which students learn dismounted and mounted patrols, land navigation, range estimation, weapons firing and tactical firing

under stress.

Upon completion of the classroom portion, the defenders devised a plan to travel on foot and by vehicle from their insertion point to the village where they established a base operations center.

By using their maps and skills they acquired during the course, the defenders were able to make a thorough plan and meet their goal of taking the village, said Staff Sgt. Stephen Kraus, 435th Security Forces Squadron Ground Combat Regional Training Center instructor.

“Getting out here and seeing what we (teach students) put into action is like watch-

ing your kids grow up,” Kraus said. “For most cops, day-to-day operations differ from the combat skills used downrange.”

Many Airmen who participated in the course were training for their first deployment and were inexperienced with the skills that fall outside of their daily job descriptions such as recognizing unusual threats.

“This training has been extremely necessary,” said Senior Airman Kyle McDonnell, 86th Security Forces Squadron gate guard. “We don’t usually do these things in a normal day, so it changes our mindset to get us ready for deployment. When you aren’t

Given that classes are usually comprised of more than 100 students at a time, the instructors said it was a nice change for them to have more interaction with individual students.

“Since we only had 25 students, it allowed us to get much more in depth with hands-on training.” Kraus said.

The Creek Defender course is offered more than seven times a year to keep Airmen ready for situations they could face when deploying downrange.

• In an effort to better serve the beneficiaries of the 86th Medical Group, the following is a forecast of clinic closures due to U.S. holidays and mandatory training days: Monday (Columbus Day); Nov. 11 (Veterans Day); Nov. 12 (MDG training day, closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.); Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving); Nov. 27 (Family Day); Dec. 10 (MDG training Day, closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.); Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve); Dec. 25 (Christmas); and Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve). Fire Prevention Week

Vehicle registration payments

The Ramstein Air Base Fire Prevention Team and AAFES Exchange Loss Prevention will celebrate Fire Prevention Week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center food court. The event will feature a fire prevention trailer, fire extinguisher training, Sparky the fire dog and weather permitting, a bouncy castle.

Free winter safety checks

Free vehicle winter safety checks will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. Customers can choose two of the following inspection items: light test, antifreeze check, tire check, brake fluid check, battery test or alternator test.

Vaccination schedule

Influenza vaccines will be administered from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during duty days at the Immunization Clinic. Other influenza events are scheduled 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center and Health Promotions; 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ramstein Elementary School; and 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 6 at RES.

Retiree dental appointments

The electronic payment system at the Kapaun Vehicle Registration Office is currently inoperable and patrons will be unable to pay for services with debit or credit cards. All customers should have another means of payment, check or money order, for all transactions requiring payment. Cash payment cannot be accepted. Network repairs

On Tuesday, TKS cable service will conduct repairs to the main optical fiber telecommunications line that services Baumholder’s Smith Barracks. Residents on Smith will experience interruptions of TKS network services between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. while the repairs are under way.

Services impacted include: TKS easyConnect (telephone and internet service), easyTV, AFN cable TV broadcasts and Exchange Connect Wi-Fi service. Once the repairs are completed, all services will automatically resume; no special procedure is required. Should local residents experience any technical issues after 5 p.m., the problem should be reported to the 24-hour TKS service hotline at 0631-3522-499.

Flu vaccination correction

The flu shots for the Red Ribbon event Oct. 17 will be held at Sembach Sports and Fitness Center, Bldg 105, not on Rhine Ordnance Barracks as stated in the vaccincation story in last week’s KA.

that were completed in August, the first major renovations applied to the station since its establishment in 1955.

“The new station looks perfect,” said Thomas Haupt, 86th CES driver operator. “The first thing that you would see standing here is the stall. It is now large enough for the fire truck to be parked in and keep conditions comfortable for the Airmen here.”

The recently renovated station has a completely remodeled interior.

“Things like having our own sleeping quarters and brand new appliances are really nice” said Senior Airman Kyle Ledford, 86th CES driver operator. “The new schedule will have us working the same 24-hour shift together, and we’ll always find ways to keep each other motivated.”

the Airmen to be assigned to a more dedicated schedule, increasing the efficiency of the unit, said Ledford.

“The new station definitely helps us with our response times to calls in the housing region,” Ledford said. “We now have a dedicated crew of about

four to six people with on-off rotation days, and I think we’ll be very proficient that way.”

The renovations are helping the Airmen at Fire Station 2 maintain high morale and keep the families of Ramstein safe.

However, some of them have plans to open their own business and work for themselves.

This is where Boots 2 Business comes into play.

B2B is an entrepreneurial program provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration as a training course within the Department of Defense’s Transition Assistance Program.

“I found out about the Boots 2 Business program after volunteering through Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families initiatives,” said Todd Moss, B2B instructor and professor of entrepreneurship at Syracuse University. “I have a lot of family members that have served in the military, so I jumped at the chance to get involved with this program.”

As veterans account for approximately 13.5 percent of U.S. small businesses, the goal of the course is to provide assistance to those interested

in business ownership or other self-employment opportunities.

The two-day B2B program that was held on Ramstein started with an introductory video followed by a two-day workshop on various topics including planning, economics, financial and legal matters.

“I absolutely love instructing this course because I love the energy and creativity that I see when we teach this course to military members and veterans,” said Jamie Davis, B2B instructor and former business executive. “They are really engaged, genuine and excited.”

The course helps service members view their plans from different perspectives and receive feedback from peers and business owners.

“It provides a different outlook on my long-term goals since I don’t plan to make the

military a career,” said Senior Airman Ronald Musto, 1st Combat Communications Squadron tactical network technician.

After completion of the twoday workshop, participants are eligible to register for an online, instructor-led eightweek course to further develop their specific business plans.

Though led by Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families program, the online eight-week course is taught by professors from several accredited universities.

“I really enjoyed this class and look forward to the eightweek course,” Musto stated.

B2B is currently offered at more than 165 military installations and is completely free to service members.

Nobody will know his last thoughts as flak exploded into his aircraft, dragging him down toward the German countryside. Maybe he took a last look at the picture of the woman and child he had clearly visible in his cockpit or maybe he had thoughts of his hometown.

Second Lt. Priesley Cooper Jr. was shot down during a mission 70 years ago near the village of Dietingen, Germany, during World War II. Cooper remained buried at the village’s local cemetery until 1950 when he was moved to an American cemetery in Belgium.

However, there was no closure for the pilot’s family as only rumors and theories were available about the crash location.

It wasn’t until this year that a flight cap was found and set the village of Dietingen on a journey to find the crash site and return the cap to the pilot’s family.

The former mayor of Dietingen and a group of historians took time to locate Cooper via his cap, which had

a social security number written inside of it.

Eventually the village’s journey led them to Silvano Wueschner, 86th Airlift Wing historian, who took the challenge head on to discover the information.

Wueschner was appreciative of Dietingen’s caring and compassion for the pilot.

“It is significant that after 70 years someone would turn it over to the mayor for repatriation to the family,” Wueschner said. “That to me was an act of immense kindness. Who

would think that someone would still have the family in mind after all this time?”

He discovered two relatives in Texas and records describing Cooper’s mission and his unit.

Cooper belonged to the 52nd Fighter Group, now based out of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. The relatives were soon contacted and informed of the developing situation.

“Having read the account of our Uncle Priesley Paul’s last mission and final resting place, I am moved in ways deep and powerful,”

said Ben Warton in an email, Lt. Cooper’s nephew. “The grief over Priesley Paul is generational in nature and thus has been shared by his descendants. (The work) has assuaged that grief and replaced it with a sense of pride and appreciation for life well lived for one who will be forever young.”

The village felt they could still do more and set a date for a memorial stone laying ceremony. Unfortunately, due to age, Cooper’s relatives were unable to be present during

the Sept. 25 ceremony. “(This journey and memorial are) act(s) of reconciliation and meant to convey compassion and sympathy to the families in the United States years after the war,” said Hubert Burkard, Dietingen mayor emeritus.

During the ceremony, Col. Harry Benham, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Operations and Plans chief and F-15 Strike Eagle pilot, spoke about being a young fighter pilot in combat and understanding Cooper’s fears, thoughts and emotions as he went into combat. He also spoke about how grateful he was that someone was there for Cooper when he crashed and died.

“In death, enemy and friend fade,” Burkard said. “This monument is dedicated to the memory of the American, but at the same time, to the German soldiers who were forced into this excessive and unfortunate war. We should also remember the innocent men, women and children of the civilian population who died or were left to suffer.”

Standing side by side 70 years later at the crash site, the only interruption to the silence was a bugler playing taps and the snap of feet as Benham and other Airmen joined the citizens of Dietingen to offer closure to Cooper’s family, bring two nations together and give a final salute to a fallen Airman.

The American Cancer Society reports one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

The ACS estimates that approximately 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer, 62,290 new cases of carcinoma in situ, which is the earliest and non-invasive form of breast cancer, and 40,290 deaths from breast cancer have been reported in 2015 for women in the U.S. However, women are fighting back with early detection. Developing a plan to detect breast cancer is imperative in fighting this disease.

Women should individualize their plan according to their health, family history and age. The following steps should be considered when individualizing an early detection plan: • Perform a self-breast exam. To learn how to do a self-exam, talk with your doctor. If you choose not to do an SBE, you should still be aware of how your breasts normally look and feel. Report any changes you notice to your doctor; changes do not necessarily mean cancer.

• Get a mammogram. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends women ages 50 to 74 years get a mammogram every two years.

Women younger than 50 years or who have certain health histories should discuss when to start getting mammograms with their doctor.

• Have your doctor do a clinical breast exam.

Some cancers may not be found by doing a mammogram alone but may be found when your physician does an exam.

Women who have breast implants can still do SBEs, get mammograms and have a clinical breast exam. Let your technician know if you have implants when making a mammogram appointment.

Remember, having a mammogram plus a clinical breast exam done by a health care professional is the most effective way to detect breast cancer early.

Winter is coming; are your tires prepared?

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The golden leaves of fall begin to fade away and along come the frosted branches of winter. In order to fully enjoy the holiday season, keeping ones winter tires in mind is a priority.

It is highly recommended in Germany that all motor vehicles have winter or all-season tires fitted during road conditions brought on by the winter season; however, if involved in an accident without winter or all-season tires, the driver will be cited or fined on the spot.

Winter or all-season tires have a symbol of Mud + Snow (M+S), a three-peaked mountain, a snowflake or a combination of all three.

Tech. Sgt. Natalie Turner, 86th Airlift Wing Ground Safety occupational safety technician, states that while there isn’t a specific time period set in Germany to switch to winter tires, the local drivers use “von O bis O,” from O to O, as a rule of thumb, meaning winter or all-season tires should be on vehicles from October to Ostern, or Easter.

“During the first snowfall last winter, we had nine vehicle accidents in the morning involving KMC personnel,” Turner said. “Three of those vehicle drivers were cited for not having the appropriate tires. Since inclement weather is unpredictable, it’s important to be prepared now to help keep yourselves, your families and others on the road as safe as possible this winter.”

If reusing winter tires from the year before, it is important to ensure the tread on the tires are up to standards as well. There is a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm, but experts recommend a minimum of 4.0 mm to safely navigate roads.

If a driver becomes stuck or is involved in an accident during the winter months and still has their summer tires on their vehicle, they are charged with an on-the-spot fine by the German Polizei. These fines can range from €70 to €100 per tire on a vehicle involved in a traffic accident, and not all insurance companies cover the damages under these circumstances. When a major accident with injuries occurs, the driver can be charged with reckless driving and face more severe consequences.

“Winter driving conditions such as rain, snow and ice dramatically affect the braking distance of a vehicle,” said Senior Airman Kathryn Patchoski, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron traffic manager. “The driver’s capability to complete a smooth and safe stop is severely limited due to reduced tire traction. If the vehicle causes an obstruction and aggravation to other traffic, the fine may be doubled. You may also be prevented from continuing your journey unless the tires are changed or the weather conditions change.”

Someone looking to switch their tires in preparation of the wintry road conditions can find the means at the Ramstein Auto Skills Center.

The center provides services Monday through Friday, by appointment, to change tires and can be reached at

The center also provides space and equipment for anyone interested in changing their own tires. The bays are open seven days a week, but a class is required to learn how to use the tire mounting and balancing equipment prior to use.

Classes are held at 1 p.m. every Saturday on a walk-in basis.

The charge is $4.50 per hour to use the bay, $3 per tire to use the balance machine and $2 per tire to use the mounting machine.

The winter months have much to offer for all Airmen and their families. The correct type of properly fitted tires create a safer environment for everyone who is out enjoying the season.

Linda Via accompanied her husband, Gen. Dennis L. Via, commanding general of Army Materiel Command, during his visit to Europe, diverting her own itinerary to concentrate more on community leaders and organizations.

As the spouse of the Army’s most senior sustainmentfocused leader, Via spends much of her time providing family leadership and mentoring to communities supporting sustainment organizations throughout the Army, including the 21st TSC and its partner organizations in Europe.

Via attended a number of informational briefings throughout the Kaiserslautern area, including a visit to U.S. Army Installation Management Command Europe, Army Community Service, the Sexual Harassment /Assault Response and Prevention Center, and the Department of Defense Education Activity

Headquarters, all located on Sembach. She also visited Kaiserslautern High School on Vogelweh, where she spent time talking with students and staff members.

Throughout the week, several presentations and conversations focused on helping school children adapt better to living in Germany and getting parents more involved in their children’s lives.

Via’s whirlwind tour ended with her participation in the 21st TSC Family Readiness Executive Steering Committee Forum.

“We are in the process of redeveloping our Family Readiness Program,” said Col. Ronald D. Brown Jr., deputy commanding officer, 21st TSC. “We are happy that Mrs. Via is here today to give us some direction in making our Family Readiness Program much more userfriendly and effective.”

During the forum, spouses and parents presented their concerns, issues, and proposals for better and more cohesive communication between available resources and leaders, Soldiers and families.

Brussel sprout season has started - one of the most tasteful and delicious vegetables, in my opinion.

Preparation Cut the bacon and the onion into fine dices. Trim the hard leaves from the brussel sprouts and cut a cross into the bottom – this will make them soften

quicker. In a large pot, boil the brussel sprouts with salt, ground white pepper, nutmeg and a half teaspoon of butter.

Boil your brussel sprouts until they are almost done and then place them into iced water to cool them quickly.

Save a cup of the boiling water and toss the rest. Melt a teaspoon of butter in the pot, add the bacon and onion dices and let them roast on medium heat, taking care not to burn the butter.

Then, add the brussel sprouts, some of the boiling water and add salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste. Place a lid on the pot and let the brussel sprouts heat up again, stirring occasionally. After three to four minutes you will have a delicious fall vegetable side dish fit to accompany any dark meat.

If you prefer it a bit more creamy, just add some liquid cream to it, giving it a few more minutes to heat up.

Via shared her thoughts and observations with the forum committee members.

“All of the issues that were brought up during this week affect everyone living here within the Kaiserslautern area,” she said.

Via also stressed how important it was for parents to be actively involved in their children’s school.

“It is great to participate as much as you can,” Via said. “Appeal to other spouses and ask if they have free time to volunteer at the schools and work with the kids. They can document these hours in their volunteer portfolio.”

“The 21st TSC command group is very aware of this issue of parental involvement,” Brown said. “This is a high priority for this command.”

Brown suggested that all parents attend the parent-teacher conferences which are held two times during the school year.

“This attendance helps connect the parents to schools,” Brown said.

Via suggested that all of the issues boil down to good communication efforts.

Via also pointed out that living outside of the United States is truly a unique and positive experience.

“Please remember the increased value that military schools bring to the table. Look at the positive points,” Via said. “The schools are smaller. Your children have the

chance to meet other children from all over the world. Share these and other opportunities with your children.”

Via closed by commending all members on the excellent programs and work they had already put in place.

“I want to thank all of you for everything you are doing and to continue to do,” Via said. “I can see from these meetings and presentations this week that Germany and Kaiserslautern are in good hands.”

Lorenz stressed the importance of following standard mandatory procedures prior to transporting any equipment and supplies to this area.

The purpose of visiting the Purple Ramp, according to Lorenz, was to familiarize the Army participants with specific Air Force requirements.

“We are here to familiarize the Army with the needs of the Air Force,” Lorenz said.

“In order for the Army to utilize (this facility) we need to provide quality products (that can) just be loaded and ready to go.”

Lorenz explained that proper cargo preparation includes blocking, bracing, packing, crating and tying down of all equipment, including vehicles and tanks.

“You must do the work,” Lorenz said. “To deploy, don’t bring everything you think you need — bring everything you know you need.”

The training also included a tour of the Ramstein Passenger Terminal.

Atlantic Academy avenue to building German, American bonds

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The city of Kaiserslautern and the surrounding region host the largest American military community outside of the United States. That’s why in 1996, the state government of Rheinland-Pfalz founded a unique institution here that promotes GermanAmerican relations, the Atlantic Academy. The academy, which is a nonprofit association, tries to build bridges between German and American citizens in the region. It wants to create an understanding for a political and cultural solidarity between nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Germans learn about

American politics, society and culture, and Americans find out about the German side. The academy’s goal is to promote transatlantic understanding with seminars, workshops, lectures, musical performances and discussions.

“All events we sponsor have a transatlantic background,” said Sarah Wagner, Atlantic Academy education manager.

This means they deal directly or indirectly with issues of U.S. foreign and domestic policy as well as American culture in order to find similarities between both countries, to discuss differences and to provide fact-based knowledge from experts on hot-button issues.

“Our staff works closely

with the military community,” Wagner said. “In May, we hosted an art exhibit with works from local Department of Defense students; and in August, the annual summer school group visited Ramstein Air Base and introduced Germans to the civil and military components of U.S. foreign policy.”

Recently, the academy conducted discussions and workshops in English with speakers talking about local opportunities for entrepreneurs, cultural differences in business life and networking opportunities for both Germans and Americans.

Staff Sgt. David Lund, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron, Civil Engineer Fire Department, mans the blood pressure station while Students at Ramstein Middle School receive their annual health screening. With the assistance of volunteers from numerous organizations within the base medical community, more than 860 students in grades six through eight were seen in three short days. Among the many organizations that provided volunteers were the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Surgeon General, 86th Aerospace Medical Squadron, 86th CES, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, 86th Medical Support Squadron, 86th Medical Group and 21st Operational Weather Squadron. These civilians and service members were friendly, helpful, efficient and, above all, patient. Without their support, students could not have received their health screening in such a timely manner.

Tongeren’s Flea Market and Holland’s Caves Tongeren’s Sunday morning flea market is world-renowned and if you are an American stationed in Europe, you will hear about this gem. It’s absolutely worth going to visit. When my friend Heather said she would show a group of us her old stomping grounds in the Netherlands and Belgium’s famous flea market for a weekend, we jumped at the chance to go. Here are some of the best tips from our Benelux (minus the lux) trip.

Aachen, Germany Our first stop was Aachen, Germany. This cobblestone covered, larger university town is the last stop in Deutschland before entering the Netherlands. We visited the Aachen Cathedral, which is known for the royal seat of Charlemagne, the first king of the Holy Roman Empire.

Although we missed the 2 p.m. English tour we were able to visit the inside later after a church service to walk through the cathedral before 7 p.m. The majesty and honor of this place was sensed from the minute we entered. Having been the place of coronation for over 500 years for German royalty, the reverence and omniscient emotions took me over.

Aachen is also a town known for its “gingerbread” or Printen, similar to lebkuchen but not the same. There were several stores to buy from in the old city and we smelled the sweet aroma permeating the walkways of this very old Roman town.

Maastricht&Valkenburg, Netherlands We stayed in Valkenburg, NL. Valkenburg is a beautiful town with overlooking castle ruins that have a great story behind them. When the King found out Napoleon was coming to invade and had plans to blow

up his castle, the King took matters into his own hands and destroyed his own castle. The ruins remain unchanged. Although the ruins were closed to visitors while we were there.

We also enjoyed a wine tasting in a cave while we were in Valkenburg at the Bistrot a Vins. Be sure to make your reservation ahead of time as they are voted the best restaurant in Valkenburg and are quite busy. This was a super fun add-on I would highly recommend.

There is also a restaurant row in Valkenburg so choosing a place to eat wasn’t difficult and was within walking distance of our hotel.

On Saturday morning, we decided to visit Maastricht, NL, mostly because we heard about a morning flea market and Maastricht is located on the Maas river. The views of the bridges were amazing. While we were here we also went on an underground Maastricht cave and fort tour.

One of our favorite stops on the trip. Our tour guide Michael was hysterical, even leaving us once in the dark, damp cave to find our way out.

Not really…we held on to the wall and it was just for a moment. He was so delightful and lighthearted, be sure to ask for him by name as his English tour rocks.

The fort tour was given by Ralf.

The top floor views of the fort allow you to take pictures of Belgium and Maastricht which are absolutely gorgeous. This impregnable fortress only took 8 months to complete. It was hard to believe, so you’ll have to see it for yourself. The fort tour lasted about 45 minutes while the cave tour was about an hour.

Tongeren Flea Market Sunday morning we woke up very early to get to the Tongeren Flea Mar-

ket, as the hours are from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. We planned on grabbing breakfast and a coffee at one of the many cafes when we got there.

We arrived right when the vendors were setting up so we knew we would have to make several sweeps. We split up but made a meeting point for midday and then later in the afternoon.

Tips to help you shop smart All of the vendors liked to “haggle,” don’t be embarrassed about asking for a lower price. They have come to expect this and actually look forward to this practice. Also, I have a friend who says if we don’t barter a little bit it will keep the prices high. I didn’t pay full-price for one item, well maybe one, it was a Dutch cow bell which was unique, it was special to me.

Some stores used to take the VAT form, but the rules have changed now.

We mentioned it to our new friends at Antiek Patrick, right on the square, and he cut the price of my wall mirror and said: “There’s your VAT,” with a smile.

Many of the vendors had similar pieces, they know what we are looking for so don’t settle on a piece if it’s really high. Chances are, you’ll find it around the corner for less. This happened to my friend, Anita, and she got a steal on a stain-glass type window.

Everyone spoke English; this made shopping and eating very easy. I’m still learning Deutsch and have not moved onto Dutch.

Transportation & hauling information We rented a 7-passenger van to haul our limited purchases back.

However, a van/truck was not much more and we would have been able to fit larger and possibly more pieces.

Our rental was under €200 for the

weekend. The van/truck was about €50 more for the same time. I can’t guarantee the price but it’s worth checking into. *Special Note about Esso card for rentals – one of the key items we learned the hard way is there is a fuel ration on all car rentals (no matter the size of your vehicle). All 1-7 day vehicle rentals are allotted a small ration for fuel. (See customs office for more details). *also to apply for the Esso ration card you must have the rental vehicle registration to take to the customs office, fill out the paperwork, then head to AAFES Customer Service to obtain the card, and put money on the balance to use on the economy – this delayed our trip by 2 hours!* Aachen is the last place you can fill up at an ESSO. We did not have to gas up the entire time we were in Belgium and the Netherlands. Major bonus by the time we came back to Stuttgart, I had .73 Euros left on my ration.

This was an unforgettable trip and we are planning another trip to stock up on more European treasures. We had a great group of gals with lots of laughter and discovery, making the trip fantastic.
