STATE OF THE ART: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen, Brandenburg

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

After reunification in 1990, the 11 states of West Germany and the five of East Germany merged into one country. The former East German states are often referred to as “new states.”

This month our journey will lead us to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen and a part of Brandenburg.

Sandy beaches from east to west Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) is the most northern “new state” and lies along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is one of Germany’s smaller states with an area of 23,174 square kilometers and 1.6 million inhabitants. Due to its extremely long name, Germans often refer to the state as “MeckPomm.”

Schwerin is the capital with 95,000 inhabitants and the smallest state capital in Germany. It is home to the State Parliament with Manuela Schwesig of the Social Democratic Party as the Minister President who has been in office since 2017.

The most prominent landmark in Schwerin is its castle built during the Romantic Era. It is situated on an island, has a number of towers

with golden tops, a park, a historical museum and most of the luxurious rooms are furnished and ready to welcome visitors. A castle festival annually takes place in the summer.

Further attractions include the Altstadt, where magnificent city villas and town houses decorate the shores along the Pfaffenteich (lake). Small cobblestone alleys lead up to the heart of “Schelfstadt” where countless semi-timbered houses with steep gabled roofs gradually make room for red brick stone buildings. Many of the buildings entail small, enchanting gardens and courtyards. There are numerous churches and a charming shopping district.

“MeckPomm” is famed for its sandy beaches on 2,300 kilometers of coastline (including 25 islands and peninsulas) and its over 65 sea and spa towns. It is also home to both of Germany’s largest islands Rügen and Usedom, and there are two towns along the coast with exotic names, California and Brazil.

Chalk cliffs and an island of two countries

Rügen, the larger island is 926 square kilometers (somewhat larger than Berlin) and has 77,000 inhabitants. It is famed for its chalk cliffs that were formed about 15 million years ago. The highest point is Piekberg at an altitude of 161 meters, followed by the Königstuhl at 118 meters at the cliffs. As large sections of the cliffs have broken off and fallen into the sea in recent years, endangering or killing hikers, a “sky walk,”

was recently opened for more security. Two bridges link the mainland to the island and there are ferries and trains that take passengers to Scandanavia. A trip with the Skane Jet, a high-speed catamaran, will take you to Malmö, Sweden, in 2.5 hours. The city and sea resort Binz is host to one of the largest sand sculpture festivals with this year’s theme being “Back to the Middle Ages.”

The smaller island of Usedom further east has an interesting history. Throughout time, it was German and Polish on and off. Today the western two-thirds of the island, which can be reached via several short bridges, is German while the border to Poland runs right through the City of Swinoujscie (German Swinemünde) and the island without any border patrols. Swinemünde and Zinnowitz have been two of the most popular sea baths for over a century. The small town of Peenemünde on the western tip was Europe’s largest military research center from 1936 to 1945. It then served as a key East German joint naval and air Base during the Cold War Era with Soviet reconnaissance flights over the Baltic Sea. Today it has a Historic Technical Museum with a Russian atomic submarine that can be visited.

Atlantis of the North and ice-cold escape

There are many legends about the mysterious island of Vineta, which is said to have been a magnificent and wealthy merchant city

that sunk into the sea. Although about 50,000 artefacts have been found deep in the sea and a map from the 16th century depicts the island, researchers have not been able to discover it and prove its actual existence.

Once a separate body of water in pre-historic times, the Baltic Sea has only minimal tide and a very low salt content, and can completely freeze during extremely cold winters, a fortunate fact for adventurous travelers. In the winter of 1946/47 with temperatures of minus 37 degrees Celsius hundreds made their way on a perilous journey across the frozen sea with covered wagons and horses, carts and partially on foot to flee hunger and the Soviet invasion. In 1962 again a group of East Germans survived a dramatic escape, two of them on bicycles, nearly frozen stiff, but to safely arrive on Falster Island in Denmark on Christmas Day.

Last house before Denmark and a tea pot

Rostock, another former member of the Hanseatic League is the largest city in the state with a population of 208,000 inhabitants. It lies along the Warnow River and is famed for its university opened in 1419. It has a botanical garden with an Arboretum (tree garden) and a stone garden section.

The Gothic Marienkirche in the Altstadt has an astronomical clock from the 15th century. The area around the old docks has become a popular tourist entertainment area

with pubs, bars and restaurants, and cruises around the harbor or out to the Baltic Sea are fun activities. The large pedestrian zone along typical northern red brick buildings and new shopping malls invite you to discovery tours even during rainy weather.

You can take a direct train to the sea town of Warnemünde at the mouth of the river. The popular town invites you to its 14-kilometerlong beach, ideal for wind surfers and kite fans. Numerous cozy vacation apartments in old fisher houses, fish restaurants and its famous lighthouse with a round building with cafés, nicknamed the “Teepott” encourage you to stay longer. There is a plaque at the old pilot station, reminding visitors of the storm flood 1872, which wiped away most of the town, reading “last house before Denmark.” The town has also become a popular stop for large cruise ships on their way to other Baltic destinations.

Let’s go east

Our journey will lead us further south to the Free State of Sachsen, directly along the border to Poland in the east and the Czech Republic to the south. Dresden is the capital with 554,600 inhabitants, home to the State Parliament and Michael Kretschmer of the Christian Democratic Party as Minister President since 2017.

Sachsen is a land of castles and fortresses, many built during the Middle Ages. Dresden along the Elbe River is famous for its restoration of

historic buildings destroyed during World War II. The most prominent one is the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) that was completely rebuilt at a cost of 130 million Euros, about 100 million thereof from private donations. The church in Baroque style was reopened in 2005 after a twelve-year construction period.

Rollin’ down the river

Other attractions include the “Zwinger,” a palace with gardens and a fine porcelain collection, inspired by the palace in Versailles. The “Grünes Gewölbe” (Green Vault) contains the largest treasure collection in Europe. The world-famous Semper Oper was flooded during the severe Elbe Flood in 2002 and there are several palaces to visit. Dresden has had a fleet of steamboats with the oldest ship “Meissen” put into operation in 1885, inspired by Proud Mary on the Mississippi River. You can enjoy a relaxing cruise past Dresden’s skyline with the “Golden Angel” atop the Academy of Arts building, pass under the “Blaues Wunder,” a steel bridge over the river built in 1883 and painted in blue, passing by parks and marshlands up to Palace Pillnitz with royal gardens. Over 2.3 million tourists visit Dresden annually, including many Americans, outnumbering the visitors to Berlin in 2019.

A dual city

Prior to World War II the western part of Poland belonged to

Germany including the provinces of Ostpreussen (East Prussia), Pommern (Pomerania), Niederand Oberschlesien (Lower and Upper Silesia) and about two million people were displaced from their homeland after the Soviet invasion. Shortly after its foundation, the East government acknowledged the new Oder-Neisse-Line as the final German-Polish border in the “Görlitzer Abkommen” July 6, 1950, with a length of 640 kilometers.

The small city of Görlitz became situated in two countries, but 1998 the two parts of the city declared themselves a “European City” and has since served as a prime example of how two nations can overcome boundaries. The dual city GörlitzZgorzelec is very picturesque with historical buildings, a market square and promenade along the Neisse River.

The “Sächsische Schweiz” with its “Elbsandsteingebirge” is a low mountain range just north of the Czech Republic. One special point of interest is the rock formation “Bastei” where a 76-meter-long bridge was built for a panoramic view of the landscape. The area is also popular for hiking or for trips to the Czech Republic.

Witajce do Budyšina

The small city of Bautzen plays a tri-fold historic role, for one it is famous for its towers and Middle Age city center and a brand of hot mustard that has been produced there for centuries. The city and surround-

ing Lausitz Region is also home to the cultural group of Sorbs, a West Slavic ethnic group that still maintains its own language. Road signs and cultural buildings are depicted in German and Sorbian with about 200,000 speakers that might welcome you in their language Witajce.

Last, but not least, prison Bautzen I, also known as the “yellow misery” and Bautzen II, of the Stasi (state security administration) was used to imprison political critics during the National Socialistic regime, Soviet occupation and during the East German era. Up to 7,000 inmates were imprisoned at one time under inhuman conditions starting 1946 and precise records of how many prisoners died there have been lost through time. The historic buildings are now a museum and memorial site.

Monotonous gray to peaceful protest

Our last stop in Sachsen is in the largest city of Leipzig with 500,000 inhabitants. Even during the East German era, the city was a remarkable business center and rather crowded with typical gray and monotonous panel buildings.

Many of the historical buildings were so heavily damaged during the war that they couldn’t be rebuilt, but the city hall in Renaissance style with its historic museum is located at the Market Square in the city center and composer Johann Sebastian Bach is buried in the Gothic St. Thomas Church.

The colossal Monument to the Battle of the Nations with a height of 91 meters is the most prominent landmark in Leipzig. Connewitz is a swinging and colorful city section resembling bustling Berlin in the 1920’s with diverse cultural events, is popular among students, with theaters, restaurants, cafes and concert halls as well as art courses, workshops and alternative performances.

The Nikolai Church was the meeting place for the peaceful Monday demonstrations in East Germany, eventually bringing about the fall of the East German regime in 1989. Once a typical East German gray industrial city, Leipzig has returned to its old splendor and is well worth a visit.

500 miles from home Frankfurt/Oder is a picturesque mid-size city in the State of Brandenburg along the Oder River. It has a historical city center and was first mentioned as Vrankenforde when it received city rights in 1253. The city holds a few surprises, such as being awarded the “City of the Future Award” in 2016/17 and has developed into a bustling business hub in the last three decades. The distance from Kaiserslautern to Frankfurt/Oder is almost exactly 800 kilometers (500 miles), making it the furthest point away from home in the Kaiserslautern Military Community on mainland Germany.

Nostalgic pleasure

Located in Brandenburg the

Spreewald is a German biosphere southeast of Berlin with 300 kilometers of navigable waterways, fed by numerous side arms and shallow canals of the Spree River. It is also one of the most relaxing areas in Germany with a nostalgic atmosphere that will draw you back into a whimsical fairytale landscape of the 19th century.

A boat ride in a flat bottom “Kahn” where the captain steers the vessel with a punt (a long wooden pole) through the dreamy forest along tiny villages with wooden houses. The Sorbs that settled there in the mid 1850’s will tell tales of their simple lives and sell large pickles, a specialty of the region as whole fruits, in soup or as jam, along the way. Ready for a break from your busy schedule, the Spreewald is the place to be to absorb quiet and solitude. A museum at Castle Lübben has a historical display and a train ride on the Spreewaldbahn, an old steam train, may top off your spacation.

The State of Brandenburg has an area of 29,500 square kilometers and 2.5 million inhabitants, and completely encircles the City of Berlin. The capital is the romantic city of Potsdam with prestigious palaces and was also location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, which defined Germany’s history for the following 45 years. To keep you in suspense, we’ll continue our tour of the rest of Brandenburg next month, slowly closing in on our final destination.

86 AW connects USAF, Allies, partners for Astral Knight 23-6

The 86th Airlift Wing participated in Astral Knight 23 Part 6, an exercise aimed to demonstrate proactive and reactive Agile Combat Employment deployments, at Ramstein Air Base; Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania; and Rovaniemi Air Base, Finland, Aug. 18-23.

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron and 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Ramstein AB, participated in the multinational live-fly field training exercise by transporting Airmen and cargo necessary for quickly launching and recovering aircraft at both locations.

“Airlift is essential when personnel and cargo are required to be at a new location on a shorter timeline than it would take to move by ground,” said Capt. Mandy Olguin, 37th AS C-130J Super Hercules weapons officer. “It is important

to constantly validate our assumptions in the ACE scheme of maneuver because these processes can rapidly change. It is important to understand where our limitations are in order to maneuver more efficiently if directed to execute ACE in a real-world scenario.”

This iteration of AK23 is the culminating piece to a larger, overarching exercise which started in May. The exercise enabled U.S., Lithuanian and Finnish airmen to enhance command and control procedures while improving logistics with Allies and Partners in the Arctic and Baltic regions through multinational inter flying formations and ground operations.

Additionally, the 37th AS transported approximately 90 U.S. Airmen to Lithuania from the 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy, and the 48th FW, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England.

“Our mission is to be ready all the time and work with any

country we are allied or partnered with,” said Maj. Sandra Salzman, 37th AS pilot-physician. “With mutual support between Allies and Partners, we can execute any mission that is asked of us — any time of the day or night. Exercises

allow us to practice that and work out the kinks now, so if, and when, we are asked to do it we are a fast and fit team.”

The U.S. Air Force regularly trains with Allies and Partners across Europe to ensure timely

and coordinated responses during peacetime and contingency operations. Exercises like AK23-6 provide an opportunity for Allies and Partners to synchronize their responses and provide a unified front across the Alliance.

nearly 18 months to complete due to the artist’s extensive research into each of its numerous elements.

The artist, Warren F. Neary, focused the content of the piece on the contributions of Airmen and Guardians throughout the eras. Beginning with the earliest airpower innovators in the Army Air Corps, the art highlights significant milestones and achievements.

“[Neary] met with DAF leadership and visited bases around the country to capture the range of the missions and the people that compose our Air and Space Forces,” Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall remarked. “The people you see in the painting are depictions of real Airmen, real Guardians; both are part of our heritage and those who are currently serving ... [This artwork shows] people who helped build our organization, the aircraft and equipment that shaped our experiences and the missions that drove it all.”

In addition to depicting Airmen and Guardians, the artwork features various Air Force and Space Force platforms and systems. In total, 114 unique visual elements are incorporated into the piece. Each group of elements in the artwork is designed to form the shape of the delta or infinity symbols. The delta symbol carries a deep, historic meaning for both the Air Force and Space Force and signifies upward trajectory and rapid advancement. The infinity symbol represents the ever-present requirements for adaptation, improvement, innovation and vigilance.

Neary has created many works of art throughout his career depicting subjects of air and space power. He has received national-level recognition, and his artwork has been exhibited in the National Museum of the Air Force, the Museum of Aviation, the U.S. Air Force Art Collection and the U.S. Army Center for Military History, in addition to private collections.

Port Operations in Esbjerg showcase interoperability between Denmark, UK, US

ESBJERG, Denmark — The Motor Vessel ARC Endurance delivered an estimated 800 vehicles and pieces of equipment, including the M1A2 Abrams SEP-V3, M2 Bradley, and the M88A Recovery Vehicle, belonging to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division deployed to Europe, at the port in Esbjerg, Denmark, on Aug. 25. The 2/3ID ABCT, stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, replaces 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, stationed at Ft. Cavazos, Texas, as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ commitment to Operation Atlantic Resolve.

“The United Kingdom and the United States have had a successful, long-running partnership,” said Brig. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “This operation is a significant milestone in that partnership

because it demonstrates both the 104 Logistic Support Brigade and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s ability to plan and execute combined operations. Similarly, Denmark is an original NATO ally. Its willingness to host both the U.S. and the U.K. in support of this and future operations clearly demonstrates its commitment to NATO and its positive relationship with the U.S. military.”

Soldiers from 21st TSC’s 386th Movement Control Team, 39th Movement Control Battalion, and in coordination with the 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), 104 TEG, Homeguard District South and Southern Jutland, and commercial organizations discharged the vehicles and equipment, efficiently executing its reception, staging, and onward movement.

“It’s been wonderful working with our Danish and British partners, having a Danish soldier tied in with us, seeing how we do things and explaining how they do their operations,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Julia Johnston, acting port opera-

tions officer in charge with the 386th Movement Control Team, 39th Movement Control Battalion. “Even with the United Kingdom, to see what and how they’re doing things and how they manage a port operation like this, you get to learn a lot about their culture and military, making building those relationships possible.”

Interoperability is a crucial notion in the military; having relationships between Soldiers from other countries makes NATO operations a success and allows the workflow to be smooth and cooperative, allowing for a constant progression of each tasked mission.

“There’s been a lot of interoperability between ourselves, the Danish, and the Americans, especially with the Defender operations over the previous couple of years,” said British Chief Warrant Officer2 Adam Gallagher, 29 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps movement controller. “During missions like these and working together, we’re improving our personal and working relationships, understanding how each

unit works, how each Army differs and learning best practices from how we all do things differently. It makes missions like this a success, and it makes it easier to plan for and execute in future understandings of how each role differs from the British, Danish and U.S. Militaries.”

Each country has its appreciation for understanding and pushing to develop and maintain working internal relationships between each of the present militaries, and as they develop, successful operations become a repetition to ensure success is inevitable for these participating militaries.

“The internal relationship between all three countries is very crucial, no doubt,” said Danish Lt. Col. Tobias Tesch, commander of the Homeguard district South & Southern Jutland. “However, this is the ninth time we have received ships within the Esbjerg harbor and have very good cooperation, both with the British and U.S. forces. [We are] consistently trying to develop and even improve our relationships on a daily basis and during operations.”

The Esbjerg port operation also demonstrated that the U.S. Joint Forces provides proactive and scalable options for priority missions.

The 2/3ID ABCT “Spartans” will fall under the command of the U.S. Army V Corps. Also known as “Victory Corps,” V Corps is America’s forward-deployed corps in Europe and works alongside NATO Allies and regional security partners to provide combat-ready forces, execute joint and multinational training exercises, and retain command and control for all rotational and assigned units in the European theater.

Since April 2014, U.S. Army Europe and Africa has led the Department of Defense’s Operation Atlantic Resolve land efforts by bringing units based in the U.S. to Europe on a rotational basis. Deployed units are ready, combat-capable forces able to conduct extensive bilateral, joint, and multilateral training throughout their deployments to more than a dozen European countries. Moreover, Operation Atlantic Resolve enables the U.S. to enhance deterrence, increase readiness, and support NATO.

Dog Jog for Life: Unlocking the power of pets in Suicide Prevention

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to prevent suicide. However, suicide prevention is not confined to a single month; it is a yearround effort.

Understanding Suicide Prevention: Suicide prevention involves understanding risk factors, protective factors, agency resources, and the support systems comprising friends and family. It is about recognizing the signs, knowing when to intervene, and where to find help. One invaluable tool is the A.C.E. (Ask, Care, Escort) training, which underscores the importance of empathy, trust-building, and asking the critical question: “Are you thinking about suicide?”

As a guiding principle, we emphasize that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. Demonstrating CARE means active listening without judgment, allowing individuals to share their stories and reasons behind their thoughts

of suicide. We must respect their ambivalence and be present to understand their feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and despair.

Taking Action: To intervene effectively, we must defuse any suicide plan. This includes removing any potential means of self-harm and working with individuals to develop a safe plan for the present and the future. It is about getting a commitment from them on what they will do and stating what we will do to support them.

We also emphasize the importance of ESCORTING individuals in need to the best available help, ensuring they receive the assistance they require. However, in our efforts to support human lives, we sometimes overlook a remarkable source of solace and strength — our pets.

The Role of Pets in Suicide Prevention: Enter “Dog Jog for Life,” an event that embodies the spirit of suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Our dogs often understand our moods better than we do ourselves. They offer us empathy, share in our joys, and stand by us during our darkest days. Our connection with them is unwavering.

With our pets, there is no worry

about societal stigma, betrayal, rank, or titles. They provide a deep sense of trust, assuring us that we are not alone in our struggles. Our dogs are silent, respectful listeners who do not interrupt or judge. When we feel hopeless and helpless, they offer us empathy and a reason to keep going. Even in moments of ambivalence, they are consistently present and engaged.

Beyond emotional support, our dogs keep us active, ensuring we get out of the house, interact with others, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They are true companions in every sense.

Our pets, often overlooked in discussions about suicide prevention, serve as lifelines of support. They offer comfort, companionship, and unwavering empathy when we need it most.

So, as we commemorate Suicide Prevention Month, let us not forget to hug our pets and say thanks, buddy. This article is dedicated to my dog Buddy, a constant source of inspiration and comfort.

Dog Jog for Life 5K Fun Run is scheduled for Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Landstuhl Physical Fitness Center.

Sacrifice Remembered: 449th AEG, Camp Lemonnier Community honor fallen comrades with memorial half-marathon

On Aug. 26, 2021, at 5:50 p.m. local time, a terrorist attack occurred at Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan, killing 183 people, among them 13 U.S. service members. Two years later and a continent away, the memories of that day remain clear to many members of the military community at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

“When the bombing happened, I remember not wanting to believe it and seconds later seeing a surveillance feed with masses of people running in all directions and everything covered in smoke and haze,” said Lt. Col. Brian Ayers, 81st Expeditionary Rescue Squadron commander and former member of the Personnel Recovery Task Force during the drawdown. “That’s when it hit me and we all immediately jumped to work preparing for the influx of wounded that would come, including potential casualty evacuation flights.”

Members of the PRTF had arrived in the country the month prior, ahead of the planned drawdown and while things initially seemed calm that quickly began to change.

“As more districts began to fall to the Taliban, it was apparent that momentum was shifting in their favor and on Aug. 15 they entered Kabul,” Ayers said. “The next 10 days were full of stress and chaos as the system for processing thousands of at-risk evacuees, allies, and Americans was developed and refined. It was during this time that many of us came in direct and enduring contact with the servicemembers who would later be killed at the Abbey Gate bombing, since you would see the same faces over and over again.”

As the Taliban expanded their control over Kabul, thousands of civilians made their way to Hamid Karzai International Airport, which made it a target for terrorists.

“In the end, we learned that 13 of our fellow Americans had been killed, and many were folks we knew, whether by name or face only,” Ayers said. “It was a heavy feeling. It was a tough day, and the weight of the deployment began to really hit hard.”

For the second anniversary of the bombing, the 81st ERQS along with other members of the 449th Air Expeditionary Group and Camp Lemonnier community came together to run a halfmarathon to remember those who lost their lives. At a separate installation, the 303rd ERQS also held its own event in commemoration of the attack.

“The rescue community often will remember our fallen

with different workouts, from PEDRO 66 in Afghanistan, JOLLY 22 in England, and JOLLY 51 in Iraq to name a few,” said Ayers. “Because of the 13 service members lost in the Abbey Gate Bombing, a half-marathon felt fitting, remembering each one of the fallen for every mile run.”

Despite the heat of the Djiboutian night, service members pushed themselves to complete the 13 mile run in honor of

those who had to lay down their lives two years before.

“We work in a very unique profession, and I think it’s important to not only remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but to remember that they were people just like us,” says Ayers. “The job can go from

mundane one moment to requiring everything of you and those beside you the next. Each one of our fallen were volunteers who stepped up to be a part of something bigger than themselves and in the end gave their lives doing so. That deserves remembrance.”

Team 21 places focus on safety, people

Sustainment Soldiers assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command conducted a 48-hour command wide safety stand down to increase awareness on all aspects of safety and review trends of Class A, B, and C level incidents involving vehicle operations, on and off duty throughout the European Theater, Aug. 30-31.

Units across the U.S. Army conduct safety stand downs yearly to focus on various safety procedures to combat complacency. The 21st TSC team conducted their safety stand down before summer’s end, ensuring that continual efforts are made to enhance driver training programs across the theater while safely carrying out missions

around the European theater.

“There is nothing more important than our people,” said Brig. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “You have to care. The safety and welfare of our people in this command and within the communities of our host nation is my priority. That’s why this emphasis on safety within everything we do is important.”

During the stand down, the sustainment theater halted all nonmission essential activities and took a couple of days to reflect on the basics of vehicle safety.

“We can become complacent within our own jobs and what we do every day,” said Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Scarborough, movement and maneuver support non-commissioned officer, 39th Transportation Battalion. “It’s a routine we get into and then we

miss the small things and I think the safety stand down, helps getting us back to the basics and bringing us back to what we know is right and is very important.”

In recent months, there has been an increase in vehicle accidents across the European Theater. Considering these events, sustainment leadership held the stand down prior to Labor Day weekend to highlight the importance of safety to prevent similar incidents. They used this time to analyze accident trends and decide what steps need to be taken to increase the safety of Soldiers as they operate government and personally owned vehicles daily.

“Before we put Soldiers into vehicles and put them on the road, we have got to make sure they are good to go,” Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, senior enlisted advisor, 21st Theater Sustainment

Command. “This is not just in the motorpool but for their POVs as well.”

The safety stand down included classroom instruction and practical exercises to help Soldiers master the basics and apply their knowledge in realistic vehicle operation and safety scenarios.

“The safety stand down has been very informative, and it’s taught us a lot. This was a good reminder of how to maintain vehicles properly and ensure we are driving safely,” said Spc. Robert Younger, a Soldier assigned to 519th Battalion. “Getting handson experience and walking through step-by-step procedures, letting us know where we could find it and in things like [Field Manual] FM regulations was really helpful.”

The practical training consisted of exercises specific to safety

when driving a vehicle, host nation laws and regulations and foundational Army knowledge. These exercises ranged from instruction on adequately operating a vehicle OCONUS to German road sign familiarization.

“It’s been good to see new faces and have a smaller group of people where you can get more personal training with a chance to get that hands-on experience,” said Younger. “My favorite part of the training has been the motorcycle safety, and it helped me get an insight on how it helps make the road safer for motorcycle drivers.”

Safety stand downs are essential for units across the Army to analyze and study what they could be doing better in their own organizations through reviewing safety policies, procedures and practices to fully identify and mitigate job hazards.

ABC IN KMC: October Fest

When service members are notified of their selection for an overseas assignment, they may feel a sense of anticipation for various reasons, including the opportunity to travel and immerse themselves in a new culture.

This holds true for many service members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, who may have missed the chance to experience an authentic Oktoberfest. This year marks the 188th celebration of Oktoberfest in Munich.

While the annual festival enjoys worldwide recognition, it is possible that many are unfamiliar with its history and how it has evolved into the celebrated event we know today.

Oktoberfest originates from Munich with the marriage of Ludwig I, the future king of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, Oct. 12, 1810, where celebrations lasted five days. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wed-

ding, participate in festivities, and watch horse races.

According to the city of Munich’s website the celebration was so popular it was brought back the following year and included an agriculture fair.

Many new additions were made in following years including horse races and food and drink vendors. These vendors eventually moved to beer halls in the 20th century.

Today, Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world pay hom-

age to the Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival is traditionally a 17 to 18-day celebration, ending on the first Sunday in October. Since 1950, the mayor of Munich has kicked-off the festival by tapping a keg. What might be a surprising

fact for visitors is that the large tents are completely newly constructed with fresh timber every year and building starts in July.

Oktoberfest will be held Sept. 16 to Oct. 3 this year. Members planning to attend Oktoberfest celebrations — locally or across the country — should ensure they have a plan for transportation if drinking alcohol. Members are encouraged to have a plan and use resources available like local cab companies, public transportation, a designated driver, and their immediate supervisor.

Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving is available Fridays and Saturdays between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Members should call AADD at 0152-5172-3356 if their original plan falls through.

Oktoberfest in recent years has yielded six million visitors, including Germans and other tourists, and roughly two million gallons of beer.

For more information about Oktoberfest, visit www.oktoberfest. de.

GACO CORNER

Welcome to our informational series on driving in Germany. Last week we discussed traffic circles. This week our driving topic is bicycles.

Bicycles are a common sight on German streets, especially in the summer. Interactions between cars and bicycles aren’t always friendly and sometimes even dangerous so we are trying to put out guidance that can make the coexistence between the two easier.

Some basic rules:

Please slow down as soon as you see a bicycle on the road ahead. Check to see if there is oncoming traffic before starting the passing maneuver.

Keep a distance of 5 feet (1.5 meters) distance when passing a bicycle inside of city limits.

Keep a distance of 6.5 feet (2 meters) when passing a bike outside of city limits or while passing a child on a bike or a bike with a bike trailer within city limits.

If the required distance cannot be kept, don’t pass the bicycle. This might require some patience, especially when there is traffic on the

opposite side of the road as well.

All in all, please be cautious, the bike is the “weaker” road user and no amount of stress or urgen-

cy will justify causing an accident.

This ends our series about driving in Germany. For

additional questions, please contact the German-American Community Office (GACO) at info@gaco-kl.de.

Pfälzer party of the year

The Wurstmarkt, or Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival as some people refer to it, is one of the largest, most traditional and entertaining wine festivals in Germany. It is over 570 years old, and still as young as ever. It is the festival of festivals — the main celebration of the year in the Pfalz.

It takes place in the middle of the town, outside the famous giant Wine cask (Dürkheimer Riesenfass) — the largest wine barrel in the world, which also houses a restaurant. The festival is reminiscent of a Weihnachtsmarkt, with fairground rides and many food stalls being temporarily installed for the event.

Overflowing wine

You can enjoy over 150 different wines only from the Bad Dürkheim region in over 50 different places throughout the fest — from the mellow Riesling to the finest sweet ice-wine available in the many wine tents.

Or visit one of the many traditional “Schubkärchler” — small traditional wine stands with scrubbed wooden tables worn smooth over the years. Or if you prefer to enjoy a fine wine in a more tranquil and intimate atmosphere, the Weindorf — the sophisticated wine village — is the place for you. Bad Dürkheim wine loses none of its flavor wherever you drink it.

There is even a beer hall for those who prefer the grain to the grape!

Live music

Live entertainment is one of the distinctive features of the festival, and it takes place inside large wine halls, which are similar in atmosphere to the Munich Oktoberfest. Traditional German brass bands will play schlager music (party music) and popular hits that will have you dancing arm in arm with your neighbors.

Fairground and attractions

While wine and wurst are at the heart of this festival, the Wurstmarkt is also famous for its travelling fairground attractions and numerous stalls that offer fun for the whole family. A huge ferris wheel sits in the center of the festival grounds – when you sit at the top it offers the best views of this incredible event as well as the surrounding vineyards.

Origins of the festival

In the 12th century, local farmers and wine growers began to gather to sell their produce

to the pilgrims heading towards the chapel on top of a nearby mountain, Michaelsberg. By 1417, the event was known as Michaelismarkt and over the next few centuries, it grew into a three-day fair. It was first called Wurstmarkt in 1832, simply because a large number of sausages were sold during the fair – the name stuck and the market morphed into what it has become today.

St Michael’s Chapel

Enjoy a short walk to the Michaelskapelle (St. Michael’s Chapel), which sits on the Michaelsberg above the market. Up until the 15th century, pilgrims walked up the hill on St. Michael’s Day, and this is the origin of the Wurstmarkt festival.

As local poet Karl Räder once said of this hugely popular event: “The Wurstmarkt is the only festival where you meet old friends you’ve never seen before.”

Exactly right, come along and enjoy this huge event and leave with some terrific memories and new ‘old’ friends. Discover more about the Wurstmarkt on the Bad Dürkheim culture and tourism website.

Getting there

Enjoy the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt without having to worry about driving. The greatest wine festival in the world is in the heart of the Pfalz and is easy to get to by bus or Deutsche Bahn train from any direction, all around the clock. Leave your car at home and just enjoy yourself.
