Remembering Operation Market Garden

by Airman 1st Class Regan Spinner 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Operation Market Garden, commencing on Sep. 17, 1944 and concluding on Sep. 25, was a combined airborne and ground offensive involving British, American, and Polish troops. The operation sought to seize a series of key bridges in the Netherlands and open a liberation route for a rapid advance into northern Germany.

“Operation Market Garden served as proof of concept for coordinated, collaborative airborne movements, demonstrating that the concept of dropping paratroopers and towing gliders was not only a D-Day phenomenon,” said Shannon Murphy, 86th Airlift Wing historian. “The troop carrier units that transported the airborne units and towed gliders gave the operation a fighting chance, putting allied forces in place.”

The Dutch air force holds annual events in remembrance of the operation and the allied troops who risked their lives, including a flyover and other local festivities.

This year’s memorial flight consisted of nine aircraft; two Dutch C-130 Hercules aircraft, one Polish Airbus CASA C-295 Persuader aircraft, one Romanian CASA 295 aircraft, one Italian C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, two U.S. Air Force C130J Super Hercules aircraft, one German Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft and one Greek C130 Hercules aircraft.

“Being involved in the memorial drops has been great. The Dutch air force has done an exceptional job integrating with our NATO partners,” said Captain Samuel Sloan, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft pilot. “It’s an honor to participate in memorializing such a historical event.”

Today, Operation Market Garden is remembered as a symbol of valor and determination. The memorial events will continue to serve as a tribute to the soldiers who fought bravely, highlighting the importance of remembering and learning from this pivotal chapter in World War II.

Pet ownership

Being a pet owner can bring joy and wellbeing to both the pet and the owner. With ownership comes responsibility. Pet ownership in Germany and in government quarters is a privilege. Residents in family housing must comply with applicable laws, installation-specific requirements for pet ownership, registration, control, and vaccination. Pet owners must register their pet(s) with the Veterinary Clinic located on Pulaski Barracks within ten working days after arrival in the KMC. A current rabies shot is required for registration. USAG RP’s Army Substance Abuse Program honored

The Department of Defense held its annual Suicide Prevention Recognition Ceremony in the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon Sep. 6.

Hosted by the Defense Human Resources Activity, the ceremony recognized installation programs from U.S. Army Garrison, Rheinland-Pfalz, Kaiserslautern, Germany; Guam Army National Guard, Barrigada, Guam; Marine Aircraft Group 12, Iwakuni, Japan; Naval Special Warfare Special Operations Command, San Diego, California; and Air Combat Command, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Hampton and Newport News, Virginia.

Winners of the 2022 Suicide Prevention Recognition Award were selected for their exceptional and innovative suicide prevention efforts during Suicide Prevention Month observed every year in September.

Deputy Secretary of Defense

Kathleen Hicks addressed recipients and guests during the ceremony.

“It takes devoted teams to tackle the difficult subject of suicide prevention,” she said. “Over the years, we’ve understood that we cannot go about this work with a one-size-fits-all approach. Suicide has no single root cause or solution. That’s why the department is

taking a public health approach — because this problem requires a range of prevention methods and treatment options to get after it.”

Several top officials joined Hicks at the ceremony, including Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Gilbert Cisneros; Elizabeth B. Foster, executive director of the Office of Force Resiliency; Jeffrey R. Register, director of Defense Human Resources Activity;

Middle Age Market

and Liz Clark, director of the Defense Suicide Prevention Office.

The ceremony acknowledged all the installations’ creative programs, outreach efforts, and commitment to suicide prevention.

“This award is so much bigger than just the Army Substance Abuse Program team,” said Kristin James, (former) chief, USAG RheinlandPfalz ASAP. “Our submission package highlighted all the great things our community does every day to mitigate the proximal factors of suicide. It is primarily through our mature Commander’s Ready and Resilient Council process, and the great community partnerships we nurtured and cultivated, that we get a winning edge. This includes our internal partners, such as MWR and ACS and our fantastic mission partners at 21st Theater Sustainment Command.”

During FY22, the Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP team implemented the CR2 process with various forums intended to prioritize community risks, weighted on proximal factors of suicide. The CR2 working groups then used these prioritized risks to develop mitigation strategies for use by all leaders, down to the company-level, which sustained a year-long and continuous focus on suicide awareness and prevention.

The USAG Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP team led and participated in six major suicide awareness events. The suicide awareness events employed a combination of community activities, targeted group trainings, and Soldier/Familycentric events to educate community members on the importance of creating and maintaining connections as a protective factor against suicide.

Additionally, USAG RheinlandPfalz ASAP facilitated several events focused on leader engagement, leveraging helping agencies, improving resiliency skills, integration into the overseas environment and building

In alignment with the Army’s commitment to building cohesive teams and providing Soldiers and families with resources needed to strengthen resilience and improve personal readiness, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP team formed a Coalition Empowered Community Team that organized a series of events aimed at raising awareness and dialogue around suicide prevention throughout the month of September. See the calendar of events here: https:// www.army.mil/article/269292

For additional information about these events or other resources related to mental health and suicide prevention, please contact the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Army Substance Abuse Program at DSN 541-1524.

relationships.

The Defense Suicide Prevention Office recognizes programs from each military department for their efforts in furthering education and awareness of suicide prevention annually. For USAG Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP, which serves a Soldier population of 7,000+ and an overseas U.S. community of 50,000, it takes a lot of concentrated and synchronized efforts, out-of-thebox thinking and teamwork.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks thanked all the recipients.

“The programs you provide help cultivate safe and welcoming environments where individuals feel open enough to come forward,” she said. “The resources you provide promote opportunities to reach back into our communities and show them where and how to seek the help they need, when they need it.”

The Department of Defense award commended USAG Rheinland-Pfalz for its extensive and imaginative 20212022 suicide prevention program efforts and for its unwavering commitment to excellence in suicide prevention, and to one another.

“This accolade is a testament to the dedication and compassionate commitment of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP team to educate and safeguard our community,” said Col. Reid Furman, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander.

“This award underscores the entire garrison Rheinland-Pfalz team efforts to create a safe and supportive environment for everyone, especially individuals facing challenges,” he said. “Through a combination of proactive initiatives, community engagement and a holistic approach to community-wide awareness, our ASAP team has set an exemplary standard for suicide prevention programs and continues to inspire others in the critical mission of saving lives.”

LRC Stuttgart food service specialist ‘serves up’ Stuttgart community for nearly 55 years

The year was 1968, and thousands of young men were being drafted into the Army and sent overseas. Haze Hardy, Jr. was one of those men.

When Hardy left his home in South Carolina and arrived at his first duty station at Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen, never would he have imagined that nearly 55 years later he’d still be here.

But that’s exactly what happened. He’s still here.

The lead food service specialist with Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart met his wife during that first tour of duty. She was a local German girl, and Hardy was smitten. He didn’t stay a Soldier for long, but he stayed with her and stayed in Germany. In fact, he’s quick to point out exactly how long he served as an active-duty Soldier — two years, 11 months, 26 days and 4 hours, he said.

The 73-year-old Originals Café employee started out with the Army’s club system after his enlisted time. His first of two quarter centuries in the food service business was with Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation. Hardy was working at the Stuttgart Golf Course in Kornwestheim before taking a chef position at the officer’s club on Patch Barracks, which closed many years ago.

In fact, long before his current organization was even called LRC Stuttgart, Hardy worked in food service for the Directorate of Logistics, 6th Area Support Group. Eventually, 6th ASG would become U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart and DOL would become LRC Stuttgart, 405th Army Field Support Brigade.

So much has happened and so much has changed for Hardy over the past five and half decades serving the Stuttgart community, but one thing has remained constant – his passion for cooking.

“When I entered the military, they didn’t let me cook because when you’re drafted you don’t get any choices, said Hardy, who served as a medic and enlisted Soldier. “When I got out (of the Army), I started cooking. Ever since, I’m cooking, always cooking. I love to cook.”

Cooking is one of three constants in Hardy’s life, he said. He’s been married to his wife, Susanna, for 47 years. He’s been cooking for the USAG Stuttgart community for 51 years, and he’s been living in Germany for almost 55 years.

“When I came here at the age of 18, at that time we had 70,000 Soldiers in the Stuttgart area,” he said. “A lot has changed over the last half a century, but I still love it here.”

“Where I grew up, it was a little dangerous,” said the native of Anderson, South Carolina. “I don’t like guns, and I don’t like violence, and this place is always nice and quiet. Nobody messes with you. The police don’t mess with you. It’s peaceful.”

and working as a food service specialist, the father of two, grandfather of four, and great-grandfather of four more said he likes the support he receives from LRC Stuttgart.

“I like working for the LRC. My supervisors are always nice,” Hardy said. “But they’re over there in the White House, and we’re over here getting the work done, day in and day out — blue collar.”

Sebastian Mann, who works with Hardy at the Originals Café, said Hardy and the entire LRC Stuttgart team do a great job and are very important to the USAG Stuttgart community.

“LRC Stuttgart reaches across the community from one side to the other. I’ve seen firsthand how LRC Stuttgart supports this community, and it’s amazing,” Mann said.

LRC Stuttgart is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Stuttgart directs, manages, and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Stuttgart.

Haze Hardy, Jr. has been serving the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart community for nearly 55 years. The lead food service specialist with Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart works at the Originals Café on Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen, his first duty station as a drafted Soldier in 1968.

Besides enjoying life in Germany, being married to his wife,

LRC Stuttgart reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The brigade is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. Forces throughout Europe and Africa — providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

Haze Hardy, Jr., the lead food service specialist with Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart, prepares dressing for lunch at the Originals Café on Panzer Kaserne, in Böblingen, Hardy was drafted into the Army in 1968. He said he served two years, 11 months, 26 days and 4 hours as a Soldier, but he stayed in Germany and continues to serve the Stuttgart community for nearly 55 years, now.

“I love Germany. Germany is a beautiful country, and Europe is a beautiful place. But you really don’t need to go far. You don’t have to go all over Europe. You can see amazing things, beautiful things, right outside your front door,” said Hardy.

DOD seeks to bring home WWII bomber crew lost over Germany

Bringing home the remains of those missing in action is America’s sacred duty, said Army Capt. Jordan Smith.

Smith, the leader of a 25-member team from the Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency, is working to recover the remains of airmen lost during World War II.

On April 8, 1944, a flight group of about 200 aircraft from the 8th U.S. Air Force were returning from a successful mission targeting a synthetic oil factory in Germany that was critical to Germany’s war effort, as well as two factories that produced Messerschmitt ME-110 fighter aircraft.

The flight group encountered heavy resistance, losing 31 B-24H Liberator bombers.

One of the B-24s was last seen on the return flight, accompanying other bombers in northern Germany where it was presumed shot down with the loss of all crew members.

The flight crew included four officers and six enlisted service members. The officers were first and second lieutenants who served as the pilot, co-pilot, navigator and bombardier. The enlisted service members ranged in rank from sergeant to staff sergeant and served as a radio operator, ball turret gunner, right waist gunner, left waist gunner, tail gunner and top turret gunner.

After the war, the site of the crash fell into Soviet-controlled East Germany after the war, thus complicating access for U.S. graves registration and recovery teams until after Germany’s reunification in 1990.

The site currently being excavated has been a subject of research and investigations involving multiple researchers since at least 2015, according to the agency.

Recent investigations and surveys of the site involved use of wartime aerial photographs, captured German shoot-down records, local cemetery records, and geophysical remote sensing to differentiate aircraft debris from buried gas lines and other infrastructure, as well as eyewitness accounts, according to the agency.

David Brown, a forensic archeologist for the B-24 recovery mission, said the ongoing recovery efforts began on Aug. 1.

Before excavation could begin, German authorities were notified of the planned recovery mission, and their input was noted. Also notified was the local farmer who owns the land, Brown said. A full explanation was given to area residents about how the work would be conducted with as little disturbance to the area as possible.

A one-hectare area was leased from the farmer, who was pleased to assist, Brown said. A security fence was erected around the perimeter to prevent anyone from going into the site and injuring themselves by falling into the excavation pit or being cut by sharp objects.

Since topsoil is very important for farming, all of it was carefully removed and placed into a pile, which eventually will be used to restore the site to its previous state once the work is completed, he said.

The site where most of the bomber crashed was located by a magnetometer, an instrument that measures changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, he said.

So far, the team has excavated a hole about 2 meters deep and about as wide as half a tennis court. Brown said the hole will most likely need to be enlarged down to a total of 5 to7 meters, where the nose of the plane is expected to be found. It will also have to be widened.

Already, some of the plane’s propellers, which are still recognizable, have been recovered. Most of the aircraft, including the propellers, was made from aluminum; much of it has turned to a green and white powder due to environmental corrosion, Brown said. Aluminum manufactured at the time didn’t contain the protective alloys available today.

Brown said care is taken when removing the soil because live ordnance is still in the ground. An explosives ordnance disposal expert is on site to remove it, and German authorities will dispose of it.

After the earth is removed, team members haul it in buckets to a large filtration sorting area, which consists of numerous steel mesh screens and overhead water hoses that are used to remove the soil and clay from potential artifacts. The water then allows the soil to drop through the screens. What’s left on the screen are pebbles and small rocks, which are disposed of according to the farmer’s wishes, Brown said.

Also found on the screens are parts of the plane and pieces the airmen’s equipment: uniforms, parachutes, life vests, coins from the United Kingdom where the airmen were stationed, wrist watches, dog

tags, pocketknives, weapons, ammunition and many other items, he said.

The depth of the crater indicates a steep crash angle. Parts of the aircraft were severely distorted with a lot of melting, resulting from the fire that ensued, he said.

All evidence is catalogued, put into numerous plastic zip-close bags with silica gel desiccant packs. The contents of each bag are labeled with a description of the item and the date and location of its discovery. The bags are then placed in locked protective cases and stored away from the sun and other elements to be shipped stateside soon, he said.

U.S. military aircraft at Ramstein

Air Base, Germany, will transport the cases, accompanied by chain-of-custody personnel, to Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, where one of the agency’s two forensic laboratories are located.

“The team at the site will include all potential osseous material out of an abundance of caution,” Brown said, referring to bone tissue. Forensic experts at the Offutt lab will then conduct further analysis.

The site in Germany is one of many in 45 nations where the agency is searching for missing U.S. service members from past conflicts. There are still over 81,000 personnel missing in action, so the agency’s work will continue into the foreseeable future.

Falcon Leap exercise unites paratroopers from across NATO

Paratroopers from 11 different nations came together to conduct a two-week airborne exercise titled Falcon Leap, culminating with a static line jump onto the Ginkelse Heide drop zone commemorating the 79th anniversary of Market Garden at Arnhem, Netherlands, Sep. 2-17.

This exercise, led by the Dutch 11th Air Assault Brigade, Air Mobility Command, brought nearly 1,000 paratroopers together to conduct tactical airborne operations in three phases: Aerial Cargo Drops, Airborne Tactical Interoperability and Static Line Airborne Jumps, and High Altitude Low Opening freefall jumps. Soldiers and Airmen from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 82nd Airborne Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 86th Operations and Support Squadron and United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command were just a few of the U.S. Allies that partnered with the Dutch to plan and execute this exercise.

Lt. Col. Trent Talley, foreign exchange officer, Netherlands 11th Air Assault Brigade, Air Mobility Command, led the planning of this annual exercise and sought to increase interoperability among the 11 countries present.

“Falcon Leap is a two-week exercise that brings together the joint training objectives between the Dutch Air Force, 336 Squadron, and the Dutch Army’s 11th Air Assault Brigade,” said Talley. “It focuses on the interoperability between joint and multinational forces. The air and ground com-

limited or constrained by national caveats. Falcon Leap is designed to identify those caveats and also identify the level of risk authorization required to achieve results for the warfighter on the ground and bring to bear multinational joint operations.”

The first week of the exercise focused on the logistical aspect of airborne operations as 5th Quartermaster Company, 16th Special Troops Battalion’s sustainment personnel worked with their Dutch Allies to rig parachutes, prepare cargo loads and ensure each heavy equipment drop met safety standards. Warrant Officer 2 Dustin Colwell, senior airdrop systems technician, 16th Sustainment Brigade served as the airborne commander for his unit, including 5th QM Co., 16th STB. Colwell led the planning efforts for over six months leading into this exercise, led the training and conducted static line jump operations with his team. Yet, his first order of business during the operation was ensuring the planning and logistics were synced with NATO Allies and the cargo drops were a success.

“It’s always refreshing to work with other countries,” stated Colwell. “You can see how they operate, their intricacies and you build a partnership that will work on the battlefield. We’re rigging bundles to test out our TTPs [Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures] and build upon our rigging procedures together. We’re using Dutch, Romanian and Italian aircraft to conduct these airdrops and that is when it truly moves into that joint multinational planning. It’s been

The Dutch and U.S. Allies successfully dropped over 40 bundles of cargo onto Marnewaard Drop Zone accomplishing their goals for the first phase of the exercise. On that drop zone, and every drop zone within the exercise awaiting both cargo and the safe landing of every paratrooper, are the Dutch Soldiers that make each airborne operation successful. The Dutch Pathfinders.

The Dutch Pathfinders, 11th Air Assault Brigade are organized into three teams that are spread across every drop zone in the Netherlands ensuring it is safe for Soldiers, aircraft and cargo to land and the drop zone is secured.

Dutch Sgt. 1st Class Gerben Korevaar, team leader, Dutch Pathfinders has been a part of the unit for five years of the 18 years total he has served in the Royal Netherlands Army. During each Falcon Leap exercise the Dutch Pathfinders pride themselves on taking care of the landing zones.

“Every Falcon Leap we do all the drops,” said Korevaar. “Every year it’s our party. From HLZ’s [Helicopter Landing Zones] to JTACers [Joint Terminal Attack Controllers] we ensure everyone can conduct their missions and actually land out here.”

Korevaar joined the Royal Netherlands Army at the age of 21 and immediately served in Afghanistan. Each team member has multiple deployments and experience working with other nations during combat operations, with one Sgt. Maj. having eight deployments. Korevaar and the Pathfinders know firsthand the importance of training exercises

“The most important part of this exercise is coming together,” said Korevaar. “It’s international with Germans, Italians and U.S. and it’s very interesting to see the different countries coming together. If you are looking now at everything that’s happening in Ukraine you see that everything is getting more professional and more serious than ever before, and that’s why this year we’ve taken a more tactical approach. Our eyes are open and all the countries participating in this exercise are welcome. We are learning from each other and that’s most important.”

As Korevaar and his pathfinders ensured drop zones were safe for the next week paratroopers from each nation conducted jumps on five different drop zones across the Netherlands, with one in Belgium. Paratroopers conducted static line jumps from Romanian, Italian and many other nations’ aircraft with jumpmasters from each nation. After each successful jump, each paratrooper earned that nation’s parachutist badge during a wing exchange ceremony.

The culminating event, on Ginkelse Heide drop zone, was the airborne exercise commemorating the 79th anniversary of Operation Market Garden. Market Garden was the largest airborne operation in American history and during this ending to this exercise, every paratrooper was allowed to honor that history right here in Armhem successfully jumping from an aircraft, earning them their last foreign parachutist badge from their partnered nation.

Spc. Joshua Stevenson, para-

chute rigger, 5th QM Co., 16th STB, jumped with Italian troops on his final jump during the commemoration to Market Garden.

“This was great,” said Stevenson. “I met a lot of new friends from a lot of different countries. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I now have Romanian, French and Italian jump wings. I can’t describe this feeling.”

As the different chalks of paratroopers from many different nations landed and walked back to their lead jump instructors for the exercise, to attend their specific wing exchange ceremonies Falcon Leap concluded with each country honoring and remembering the sacrifices of every nation during WWII and why this exercise is important during the last wing exchange ceremony during the commemoration of Operation Market Garden.

Capt. Travis Waters, brigade air operations officer, 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division discusses those sentiments before he awards his paratroopers the American parachutist badge to Spanish paratroopers.

“This experience is very humbling,” said Waters. “As we come here to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden all the way from Fort Liberty it has been an honor to serve with you. We all come from many different nations and we all speak many different languages, but we all speak paratrooper. We work and fight together just as they did 79 years ago and today we honor them with our own service. It’s truly been an honor serving with you and to get to put these jumpwings on your chest today.”

KMC hosts suicide awareness play

Soldiers assigned to 21st Theater Sustainment Command participate in a play produced by the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, Army Substance Abuse Program, “Second

Chance,” that brings an emotional battle to life, as a Soldier endures struggles with suicide. Multiple performances of the play took place on Sep. 6, at the Sembach Tiger Theater as a part of the Army’s Substance Abuse Program annual training.

September is Suicide Prevention

month, the universal themes and realistic approach of “Second Chance” allows it to take place at any U.S. military installation worldwide while supporting the Army’s initiatives of raising awareness and promoting resources to prevent death by suicide.

The story begins with Spc. Jones, played by Mr. Clayton Harrison, adolescent support and counseling services, receiving the good news that he passed the promotion board and is on the path to becoming a sergeant. He plans to celebrate the exciting news with his wife, played by Tech. Sgt. Marquita Allen, United States Air Force Europe - Air Force Africa. Instead, he goes out drinking with some friends, a decision that leads him to an unfortunate series of events.

The dynamic cast takes the audience down the dark, realistic path any Soldier or civilian can go down when everything seems to go wrong in his or her life. Jones battles a drinking problem, marriage issues, a run-in with the law, and must deal with the consequences. The production ultimately leads to the Soldier receiving a second chance in life.

The play allows the audience to witness the struggles of the Soldier from multiple perspectives, from his battalion commander to his fellow Soldiers and his wife.

According to the writer of the play, Russell Jordan, from the USAG-RP ASAP, the characters’ scenarios and overlooking warning signs happen all the time.

“Sometimes, we see things with our eyes, but we have to be able to see invisible things clearly. We have to be able to see with our hearts,” said Jordan. “When we see those kinds of things, we have to ask the question that takes courage to ask, because when we ask what if the answer is, ‘yes.’ It takes courage to ask ‘are you thinking about killing yourself.’”

If someone were to say yes, they want to kill themselves, Jordan urges people to show that individual you care by listening. It is imperative to know suicide prevention resources and be aware of the people you work with to recognize the warning signs. For many years, the Army has shared the suicide prevention acronym ACE, which stands for Ask, Care, and Escort.

The acronym reminds people that when faced with this situation, you need to ask the question, take care of the person, do not leave them alone,

and then escort them to someone that can provide professional help.

“Don’t prejudge, don’t look at your clock, don’t come back with something to say before they even finish,” said Jordan. “You are listening for reasons that they want to die, and they are telling you that — we have seen it. But we also have to listen to the reasons why they want to live.”

As part of these efforts, the community is invited to attend four powerful suicide prevention plays entitled “Second Chance.” The play is being offered at multiple times and locations to ensure maximum participation: Sep. 25 and 27 at the Baumholder Wagon Wheel Theater – 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, contact your chain of command, a chaplain, or call the Military Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255.

Parades a’plenty

A huge parade of Oktoberfest landlords and breweries is the official prelude to the opening of the Oktoberfest. It involves about 1,000 participants, including the landlords’ families in decorated carriages, the magnificent horse-drawn drays of the Munich breweries, waitresses on decorated floats and all the beer tent bands. Starting at 11am, the parade runs from Sonnenstraße-Schwanthalerstraße to the Oktoberfest grounds.

The first Sunday of Oktoberfest, the Oktoberfest Costume and Rifleman’s Parade takes place, which includes over 9,000 performers.

A varied succession of regional costume groups, “troops” in historical uniforms, marching bands, riflemen, thoroughbred horses, oxen, cows, goats, the decorated drays of the Munich breweries, floats displaying typical local traditions and historic carriages all pass by in a 7-kilometer-long procession through the streets of the city center. Ribboned trees, harvest garlands, craftsmen’s tools from bygone days, harvest produce, dancers decorated with flowers, stars and crowns, trumpeters on horseback, flag-throwers and a host of other performers transform this traditional Munich procession into a brilliant highlight on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest.

Family attraction

Munich’s Oktoberfest is very much intended for families. There are dozens of fairground attractions such as shooting galleries, dodgem cars, merry-go-rounds, ferris wheels and high adrenaline rides. There is something for everyone, and brand new white-knuckle rides and attractions are added each year.

Plus, there are hundreds of stalls offering candy floss, gingerbread biscuits, sweets of all descriptions, tasty savory snacks and lots and lots of souvenirs.

From Monday through Friday (except holidays), from 10 am to 3:00 pm, the sign “Mittagswiesn” means discounts for attractions, admissions and prices.

Festival beer tents

Munich’s largest and most traditional breweries invite you to join the fun in one of a dozen or so huge festival beer tents –the most famous party tents in the world. Drink beer by the liter, or eat traditional Bavarian food such as giant pretzels with Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese delicacy).

Party to live music from brass bands playing traditional Bavarian schlager (party) music as well as current hits, and enjoy yourself with thousands of other people from all over the world, dancing and singing the hours away. It’s terrific fun.

You should expect to pay around €13-15 for a Maß (litre mug) of beer. And prepare to be very impressed by the servers who can carry up to five mugs in each hand!

Big Oktoberfest tents:

• Augustiner – This is the only tent still

serving the beer from large wooden barrels rather than from the steel ones used elsewhere. The tent seats as many as 8,500 people.

• Bräurosl – (Pschorrbräu tent) Not long ago Pschorr celebrated their 100th anniversary with a specially brewed beer. The tent seats 8,400 people.

• Hackerbräu – This is the only tent with a revolving stage in the middle. The tent seats 9,300.

• Hofbräu – As this is the tent tourists are most familiar with it is the one with the most international flair. Party till you drop is the order of the day here! You will even get served with a beer if you haven’t got a seat. The tent seats 9,350.

• Löwenbräu – This tent is the traditional meeting place for fans and players of 1860 Munich football club. The tent seats 8,500.

• Ochsenbraterei – Spatenbräu – This is a must just to see the ox on a spit! Some 70 to 90 oxen are consumed during the 16 days of the fair. The tent seats 7,400.

• Winzerer Fähndl – Paulaner – A tent with real Bavarian charm and the occasional celebrity. Players from FC Bayern Munich can sometimes be seen here. The tent seats 10,900.

Smaller Oktoberfest tents: These slightly smaller tents are run exclusively by Munich-based publicans, all of whom are under licence to the larger breweries.

• Armbrustschützen (Paulaner) – This tent is all about hunting and visitors can sit in the themed boxes (pheasants or badgers) and admire the hunters’ trophies. The tent seats 7,430.

• Fischer-Vroni (Augustiner) – This is a small and cosy tent located right next to at the entrance which offers grilled fish as well as sander, whitefish and salmon trout. The tent seats 700.

• Festhalle Schottenhamel (Spatenbräu)

– This is the oldest tent at the Oktoberfest dating way back to 1867. It is extremely popular with the younger visitors. The tent seats 10,000.

• Hippodrom (Spatenbräu) – Not long

ago the Hippodrom had two reasons to celebrate: the 100th anniversary of the tent taking part in the Oktoberfest and the 50th anniversary of serving Spaten beer. The gallery is always full of celebrities from the worlds of film, sport and business. The tent seats 4,200.

• Käfer’s Wies’n-Schänke (Paulaner) –Meeting place for the rich and famous. Because of the extended licensing hours to 1 a.m. there is always a real crush to get in here after the other tents close at 11 p.m. The tent seats 2,900.

• Schützenfesthalle (Löwenbräu) – Old Bavarian specialities such as Boeff Lamotte or suckling pig are served here. The tent seats 5,442.

Note: During weekends, beer tents are often closed by noon due to overcrowding, so either reserve in advance, get in early or go during the week.

Oktoberfest Food

Visitors also eat huge amounts of traditional hearty fare such as Hendl (chicken), Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Haxn (knuckle of pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezn (Pretzel), Knödeln (potato or bread dumplings), Kaasspotzn (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian traditional food as Obatzda (spiced cheese and butter) and Weisswurst (a white sausage). It’s all delicious and perfect for soaking up beer and wine. Just don’t think about the calories.

Dare to dress up

• Dirndl - Traditional German Dress at Oktoberfest

• Lederhosen (leather shorts) for men and Dirndl (traditional Bavarian dress with full skirt, apron and tight bodice) for women are practically compulsory. Well not really, but you will be the odd one out if you do not go in costume.

ABC IN KMC: Trilateral Training

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of Police Inspection 2 in Kaiserslautern, the Bundeswehr and Security Forces recently took part in a three-day seminar at Ramstein Air Base. Based on various joint police operations, the group trained under the motto “Training together — learning from each other.”

Participants eagerly welcomed the joint training opportunity after an extensive break due to the pandemic. The two-phase event was organized and led by Marco Lorenz and Steffen Potschang, two German speaking training instructors with the 86th Airlift Wing Security Forces.

The exercise included tactical first aid, law enforcement techniques, one and two-man fights, room searches and clearance. The first part focused on the topic emergency medical care, also known as TCCC – Tactical Combat Casualty Care in military terms. The 86th Medical Group supported the exercise with realistic dummies to cre-

ate a scenario as authentic as possible. U.S. Forces had gained twenty years of experience since the war in Afghanistan and its well-developed first aid strategy was bundled into a joint concept to enable a uniform training experience together with their German police and armed forces colleagues.

First as theoretical instruction, participants were then directly able to deepen their knowledge with practical exercises. These involved treating wounds with broken or severed limbs and strong bleed-

ing, problems with blood circulation or stabilizing patients under shock. In particular, the trainers made sure that only materials contained in the LebEL-Notfalltasche (German emergency kit) were used. The realistic dummies provided by the Medical Group with blood circulation, a pulse and blood pressure were especially impressing and strongly resembled actual casualties during the training.

In the second part the participants practiced various training scenarios focusing on the topic “PO

CQB – Police Officer Close Quarter

Battle.” Additional members of the Security Forces and Bundeswehr joined in this portion of the exercise. The training began with theoretical instruction of tactical procedures in buildings. An empty part of a former high school building and a recently modernized training bunker were used for this phase of the exercise. This created a valuable learning experience in enclosed rooms with moving targets which could, in real life incidents, actually shoot back at the participants.

The 86th Security Forces S3T Training unit consists of three German instructors and five U.S. personnel. Lorenz and Potschang are responsible for planning and conducting eight-week initial training courses for newly assigned German civilian personnel as well as routine sustainment training throughout the year.

Security forces team colleagues commented that they looked forward to further training opportunities with German partners and friends and pointed out that the exercise supports General James B. Hecker’s, United States Air Forces and Air Forces Africa commander, priority of partnerships. “After three days of intense impressions during the joint training, we are grateful that we could even intensify our long-standing excellent relationship with U.S. colleagues,” Johannes Grub, inspector at Police Inspection 2 in Kaiserslautern, commended.

Further valuable joint trainings with the Security Forces, the Bundeswehr and the Polizei are currently in planning.
