About the project by Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente 86th Airlift Wing commander As the commander of the 86th Airlift Wing, if I had one wish, it would be that every American could stand in my shoes for 24 hours to see the great things our Airmen accomplish every day. I have the distinct privilege of getting a front row seat to witness amazing work done daily by thousands of 86th Airlift Wing Airmen who support multiple missions and commands here and around the world. With six groups, 27 squadrons and several staff functions working in harmony here at Ramstein, Landstuhl, Vogelweh, Einsiedlerhof, Moron Air Base, Spain, and Chievres Air Base, Belgium, the 86th Airlift Wing is a power projection platform

that enables mission success for the Air Force, Department of Defense, and our NATO Allies and partners. I’m regularly asked to explain what a “typical” day for our wing looks like. The question isn’t asked with the intent to oversimplify our daily accomplishments; but rather, to begin to understand what it means to live and work at the busiest — and dare I say best — mobility hub in the Air Force. So, what does a typical day look like for our wing? My usual answer is that it depends…there isn’t a good, simple description to explain a typical day for the 86th Airlift Wing. So, when public affairs approached me with an idea on how to communicate what we do every day — “A Day in the Life” if you will — I naturally thought this book and the associated products

The 86th Airlift Wing is composed of six groups, 27 squadrons and three bases in Germany, Spain and Belgium. The wing’s mission is to conduct U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation operations flying the C-20H, C-21, C-37, C-40B and C-130J aircraft, as well as provide combat airlift and operate the Air Force’s premier installation to enable and assure strategic capabilities. In addition to USAFE and the NATO Allied Air Component Command Headquarters, the 3rd Air Force, the 435th Air Group Operations Wing, the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing and a variety of other tenant organizations also reside on Ramstein.

public affairs professionals covered nearly every facet of the 86th Airlift Wing to record the lives and service of the best our Nation has to offer. From the flightline to the medical clinic, from the dining facility to the maintenance back shops, from the legal office to security posts, public affairs captured and gathered as much imagery as possible in one day — more than 7,000 pictures and nearly 12 hours of video — to accurately reflect what is great about being an 86th Airlift Wing Airman. It was a herculean effort that took months of planning and coordination for all of it to come together on that one day; and months of work on the back end to create these products for all to enjoy. As you review this book and all the other “Day in the Life of the 86th Airlift Wing” products, look closely at the images. In that imagery you will see Airmen accomplishing extraordinary things. More importantly, all those portrayed in these products

If you look beyond the uniforms and tasks performed, you will see what I see: determination, pride, selfless service that comes with the demands and honor of serving our country. The Airmen of the 86th Airlift Wing equip, train and maintain to accomplish all that is asked of them in the defense of our nation … operationally ready, honored to serve. 86th Civil Engineer Group by Airman 1st Class Michael Stuart 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Civil Engineer Group supports the infrastructure and buildings for the largest American population outside of the United States every day. With trained combat engineers and equipment, the 86th CEG assists worldwide contingency missions by providing, maintaining and protecting properties assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing, the KMC and geographically separated units. “We see Ramstein as a strategic power projection platform, and here in the 86th CEG, we help to keep that platform running,” said Col. Laura Johnson, 86th CEG commander. “We operate, maintain and protect over $9 billion of real property and infrastructure.” The 86th CEG has its hands in every mission on Ramstein, playing a part in the building and maintenance of both built structures and natural infrastructure around base. “We run construction projects; keep the water, power and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) running; provide housing; and ensure all our facilities and infrastructure are fire safe,” Johnson said. The group provides services to more than 15 million square feet of buildings within 2,200 facilities at Ramstein, Einsiedlerhof, Kapaun, Landstuhl, Vogelweh and eight additional geographically separated units in Germany. Additionally, housing and Furnishing Management Office support is provided for those living in the KMC area, with more than 2,000 military housing units on base and 11,500 off-base housing units in their inventory. “Not only do we help maintain the airfield to ensure the aircraft can fly, we also provide support to our tenant and headquarter units, many of whom have large strategic missions, to ensure their missions can continue uninterrupted,” Johnson said.

The 86th CES fire department Airmen train to hone their skills for real-world situations. Every October, the department hosts Fire Prevention Month where they perform presentations at KMC schools to teach children the importance of fire safety.

Amongst the more than 50,000 American people it supports, the 86th CEG also provides aid to NATO partners, three wings, three combatant commands and two headquarters. “We also support worldwide contingencies with highly trained, fully equipped personnel,” Johnson said. “In addition to ensuring our engineers are prepared to deploy, we also train installation personnel on how to operate in a CBRNE (Chemical Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) environment.” The awards the 86th CEG has received clearly demonstrates their dedication to getting the job done, Johnson said. s one of only two logistics readiness groups in the Air Force, the 86th Logistics Readiness Group houses the largest transportation, supply, logistics plans and war reserve materiel accounts in U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. The 86th LRG supports the training, planning, supply and transportation of three wings, 26 geographically separated units and the largest Department of Defense community outside of the U.S. “The reason the Air Force decided to set up a logistics readiness group here is because the logistics functions are so vast,” said Col. Lawrence Hicks, 86th LRG commander. The 86th LRG comprises the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron, the 86th Munitions Squadron and the 86th Material Maintenance Squadron. They provide support functions, including munitions, vehicle operations and maintenance; cargo processing, personal property and passenger movements; force reception; supply support; property accountability functions; and fuels support. “The 86th VRS maintains over 1,800 vehicles, which is the largest vehicle fleet in the Air Force,” Hicks said. “They support each and every unit on this base and across the (KMC). That includes everything from

maintenance out on the flightline to security forces doing their patrols and everybody in between.” The 86th Material Maintenance Squadron also stores and maintains 85 percent of the war reserve materiel for USAFEAFAFRICA. Hicks said he views logistics as the foundation of combat operations. “You can look back over history and see that logistics has proven to be the lifeblood of wartime operations,” Hicks said. “If you don’t have great logistics, then your mission is going to have trouble succeeding. “Basically, if you don’t have fuel, transportation, supply parts, munitions or war reserve materiel, you can’t operate for very long,” he continued, “especially at the tip of the spear, so to speak.” From helping sustain day-to-day operations for a vast area of responsibility to maintaining materials and equipment to support contingency operations downrange, the 86th LRG’s mission can be a difficult one at times. However, Hicks said he enjoys the challenge and counts on his Airmen to accomplish it. “My favorite part is working and interacting with our Airmen every day,” Hicks said. “That’s why I’m still in the Air Force — to work with great people. We’ve got some of the greatest Airmen and logisticians in the Air Force right here. They do such a fantastic job, they are motivated about what they do, and that motivates me.”

86th Medical Group by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As the largest U.S. Air Force overseas clinic, the 86th Medical Group has made its footprints visible across 93 other countries, showing its expansive capabilities. Under the leadership of Col. Christine Taylor, 86th MDG commander, the 86th MDG has received five Air Force-level awards and 36 U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa awards, such as the USAFE-AFAFRICA Clinic of the Year in 2012 as well as many other accomplishments, including receiving “Substantial Compliance” during a recent accreditation inspection. “By receiving the highest score for one of our inspection programs (Association for Ambulatory Health Care), we did extremely well,” Taylor said. “I always give that credit to our Airmen. They are the ones out there doing the work every day and making it happen. If an organization is doing the job the way it should be done everyday, then it will always be ready for any type of inspection, and we were ready.” Ramstein is the only clinic in the Air Force with a team that can provide surgery in flight. “Being on the cutting edge and providing this capability is very exciting and has enhanced our global reach operation,” Taylor said. “The 86th Medical Group is not a typical clinic; we have a very diverse organization. For instance, we have a squadron at (Landstuhl Regional Medical Center) that provides specialty care, surgical services and critical care air transport teams. We have a (Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility), which is the air-bridge for wounded warriors. We have the largest Patient Movement Center in USAFE, and, of course, we provide care to our beneficiaries in our various clinics within the wing.” The 86th MDG’s mission is embraced by four words: prevent, heal, develop and deploy. “We prevent by building healthy communities, looking at population and how we find programs to make people healthier,” Taylor said. “For healing, we use a scientific-based approach. We develop by making sure our Airmen are trained to do their job and do it well so we can

The 86th Mission Support Group is one of the largest MSGs in the Air Force and is larger than some wings with approximately 3,600 members serving more than 50,000 Americans — the largest concentration of Americans outside the continental U.S. The 86th MSG supports Ramstein with the 86th Security Forces Squadron, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, the 86th and 786th Force Support Squadrons, 700th Contracting Squadron, 86th Communications Squadron, 2nd Air Postal Squadron and the Deployment Transition Center. “The mission of the 86th Mission Support Group is to support combat airlift and ensure the strategic capabilities here at this installation,” said Col. Troy E. Dunn, 86th MSG commander. “Ramstein is truly a power projection platform, and the 86th MSG plays an important role in that. “We’ve strived to foster a climate of respect, where we encourage our outstanding Airmen to step up and step in,” Dunn continued. “This climate of respect has resulted in a multitude of innovations and accolades for the 86th MSG. The Deployment Transition Center provides U.S. Airmen and Marines with a chance to decompress and reintegrate into their units and families after deployments. Their ground-breaking mission has received recognition from Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, who said the DTC is “one of the best initiatives to come out of 12 years of combat.” “We are proud of what the transition center has done in the past, what they are currently doing and their long-term future in our Air Force,” Dunn said. “Until the last person leaves the deployed or combat envi-

ronment, the DTC is here to stay.” The 86th Communications Squadron is the largest in the Air Force and provides strategic communications and cyberspace support for three geographic areas of responsibility. Providing security and law enforcement for the KMC is the 86th Security Forces Squadron and the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron. Their combined AOR is a massive 1,100 square miles — an area about the size of Rhode Island. The 700th Contracting Squadron provides contract execution for the wing as well as U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa requirements to ensure the ability to purchase necessary materials, services and goods. The Kaiserslautern community enjoys a variety of services, entertainment and support thanks to the combined efforts of the 86th and 786th Force Support Squadrons. Whether enjoying a performance by the Tops in Blue, getting a new identification card or settling into a room at lodging, service members have the 86th MSG to thank. “We’re dedicated to taking care of Airmen and their families,” Dunn said. The 2nd Air Postal Squadron is one of only two in the Air Force and covers 91 countries supporting 350,000 Department of Defense and Department of State personnel. They are the outstanding professionals to thank for that letter from Mom or Dad. “I really love the Air Force,” Dunn said. “I am the third generation military in my family… so this is all I know and love it. I love Airmen. I love being around Airmen and their families, so it’s really important to me that we give back and take care of them.” The mission focus of the 86th MSG ensures it will always be a power projection platform. Additionally, it provides world class support to the combat airlift mission, strategic capabilities and the KMC.

T

he 86th Maintenance Group accomplishes all aspects of aircraft equipment maintenance to fulfill the 86th Airlift Wing’s airlift, contingency and support missions. They also provide back shop maintenance and ground support for Air Mobility Command, U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command assets. “We are very much linked into the mission to generate combat air power, primarily with the C-130J Super Hercules,” said Col. Raymond Briggs, 86th MXG commander. “However, we also provide the oversight and hosting for four other airframes. Without maintenance, none of those associated missions across any of the five airplanes would get in the air.” The 86th MXG comprises two squadrons: the 86th Aircraft

Maintenance Squadron and the 86th Maintenance Squadron. The 86th AMXS handles maintenance of the C-130s, and the 86th MXS performs all of the maintenance work done in the shop as well as some maintenance on the airplanes. “I think we have some of the best Airmen in the Air Force,” Briggs said. “On the 86th AMXS side, there are Airmen who were trained by Boeing to become flying crew chiefs on the C-40; these are very elite mechanics. While all the additional support falls under the 86th MXS, from sheet metal and metals technology, to conducting letter checks, the highest level inspection performed on the C-130, they do it all.” Letter checks are in-depth inspections performed every 270 days on the C-130s assigned to Ramstein to secure the longevity of the airframes. “During a letter check, the C-130s are taken off the flightline and dissembled to be scrutinized,” Briggs said. “The process can take one, two or three weeks depending on what’s

being checked, but once it’s done, the airframe is put back on the flightline once again ready to accomplish the mission.” To ensure that mission gets done, the 86th MXG works closely with the 86th Operations Group. “Maintenance and operators have a very special relationship more so than with other groups,” Briggs said. “Neither of us can accomplish the mission without the other. Even if we never fly the airplane and are just put on alert, there is a crew. An airplane without a crew is just a nice looking pile of aluminum.” Briggs said there are three separate, yet intertwined, components that make a mission happen. There needs to be a reason for the mission to happen, the airplane must be ready to go and there needs to be an aircrew. “They all have to come together, being totally mission ready, configured and properly scheduled at the exact same time,” Briggs said. “The only way we can do that is with a

complete partnership between the OG and our Air Mobility Division.” Though there are maintenance groups around the world, Briggs said Ramstein is the most coveted assignment for maintainers. “I think I have the greatest job in the Air Force here,” he said. “Our mission is great, we have great people and we get to see the impact of what we do. Almost 40 percent of people who volunteer for Korea want to choose Ramstein as their follow on. They are willing to be away from their families for a year just to come here. That’s how amazing Ramstein is for us. “Airlift brings a quiet diplomacy. Whether we are moving an African strike force to engage some rebels or we are transporting medicine to the sick, our people get to see the good they are doing in the world (and) all the lives they are impacting,” Briggs continued. “Without the maintainers, none of this would be possible, that’s why I feel we have the best job in the Air Force.”

Wing Staff Agencies by Staff Sgt. Kristopher Levasseur 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Airlift Wing Wing Staff Agencies consist of several base units organized directly under the wing. “The Wing Staff Agencies are a diverse group of offices that provide crucial support to the wing commander, senior leaders and wing Airmen to meet mission requirements,” said Col. Leslie Smith, 86th AW vice commander. “Each office contributes a skill set needed for the wing to operate effectively, efficiently and in compliance with AFIs (Air Force Instructions) — both host nation and U.S. laws — and other guidance.” These organizations perform very specific functions for the wing and the Airmen of the 86th AW and include: antiterrorism and force protection; chaplains; comptroller squadron (finance); command post; command-

er’s executive administrators; community engagement; community support coordinator; exercise; inspections and readiness; historian; information protection; inspector general; judge advocate; equal opportunity; protocol; public affairs; safety office; and sexual assault response coordinator. WSA Airmen handle a wide variety of functions for the wing, but Smith said one of the most notable traits is not what they do, but how they do it. “The best part of working with WSA Airmen is getting to watch them in action,” Smith said. “For many who came to the WSA, they did so by stepping out of their comfort zones and are now working programs, superbly I might add, that impact the entire wing. It’s fun to watch them take on greater responsibility and grow as Airmen and leaders.” For more “Day in the Life” images, visit www.ramstein.af.mil.

Only high resolution photos will be considered for publication. Also, only photos with people in them will be picked for the paper. hroughout its history, the 86th Operations Group has influenced countless lives around the world. From enforcing no-fly zones during the Cold War to conducting combat operations on the continent of Africa today, the 86th OG’s versatility to go from fighter aircraft in the early 1990s to combat and distinguished visitor airlift today has played an intricate role in guarding America and its allies. “There’s nothing like being a part of something so much larger than you,” said Lt. Col. Brian Langridge, 86th OG deputy commander.

“Everyone wants to be on a winning team, and the 86th OG is that team. With all the missions that we have to complete and amount of responsibility we have, we’re not allowed to fail. If you watch the news and see boots on the ground in the European Command and African Command theaters, chances are we put them there,” Langridge continued.” And virtually all airlift going to Central Command comes through one of our airfields. While what we do is very important, we are only one piece of a very large pie — the 86th Airlift Wing — and the incredibly large mission the wing has as the gateway to three combat commands while serving as the host wing supporting USAFE, NATO, two additional wings and the KMC.”

The 86th OG is made up of six squadrons, including one in Belgium and one in Spain, and has participated in major operations, including operations Odyssey Dawn, Jukebox Lotus and Atlantic Resolve, to name a few. “This is one of the most diverse ops groups, I would argue, in the Air Force,” Langridge said. “Operating three airfields in three countries, providing medical care for aeromedical evacuations, flying five different types of airframes with a variety of crew positions, delivering the most senior U.S. military and civilian leaders to locations around the world, while providing combat airlift every day, and to do it so seamlessly, is just amazing and is a tribute to all the groups in the 86th AW.”

Glade, she brings a message that she will be the last one to ever arrive in the Glade, as the end is near. Starring Dylan O’Brien and Aml Ameen The Maze Runner

This is Where I Leave You

A boy named Thomas wakes up in a strange place called the Glade with no memory aside from his first name. The Glade is an enclosed structure populated by other boys and is surrounded by tall, stone walls that protect them from monsters called Grievers that live in the Maze, which surrounds the walls around the Glade.

When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens.

Every day, some of the kids who are Runners venture into the labyrinth trying to map the ever-changing pattern of walls in an attempt to find an exit. As soon as Thomas arrives, unusual things begin to happen and the others grow suspicious of him. The Maze seems familiar to Thomas, but he’s unable to make sense of the place despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. When the first girl arrives in the

The Giver “The Giver” centers on Jonas, a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet, as he begins to spend time with The Giver, who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined — a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows he must escape their world to protect them all — a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. Starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep

Dress to Impress - German Style! Beer festivals, wine festivals, folk festivals, German weddings and Sundays in Bavaria… there are many reasons to get donned up in traditional German dress (Tracht). With Oktoberfest (Munich) and Cannstatter Wasen (Stuttgart) almost upon us, there is no better time to equip yourself with a Dirndl or Lederhosen and party like a German.

By contributing writer

Lederhosen

A man’s traditional clothing is made from leather, linen and wool – originally designed for workers for the durability of the materials used. The full outfit includes knee-length trousers or shortpants made from leather, worn with rustic shoes and wool socks. Jackets and hats vary according to region and occasion. The outfit is usually sold as a set.

But where to start? What is correct? And most importantly… where to buy? Follow our guide below and you won’t go wrong…

Dirndl

Starting with the ladies, the Dirndl is a three-piece costume that can be worn in any number of beautiful colors and patterns. You can almost certainly buy the whole outfit together as a set, which saves a lot of time and effort.

Dress/Kleid

The dirndl dress is actually made up of two pieces (most often stitched together):

the skirt (Rock) and the bodice (Mieder). The bodice is quite like a corset: there might be hooks or eyelets through which a chain or ribbon is threaded. Running around the edging by the cleavage and neckline will normally be a trim – either in the form of braid, frills, or ruffles – and sometimes piping. It’s these beautiful details that really make one Dirndl stand out from another, and you can always add more to your own to personalize it. The skirts tend to be very full or ‘swirly’ and often based on a checkered fabric. Traditionalists will insist that the skirt should fall below the knee or the ankle, but it’s very common nowadays to see mini-skirt style that finishes above the knee.

Pumpkin bread from fresh pumpkin

Story by Dennis Weaver Contributing writer

Use as you would canned pumpkin. Extra puree freezes well.

So you grew pumpkins this year. Or maybe you will buy some to decorate the house or yard. Don’t throw them out; use them for baking. With pumpkin puree, you can make great baked goods from bread, to pies, to muffins. Sure you can buy canned pumpkin from the store but fresh is better, healthier, and you’ll save money.

If you are in a hurry, you can cook your pumpkin in the microwave or steam it on the stovetop. Cooked this way, it seems to have a higher water content than when baked. That’s okay but you will need to cook it down on the stovetop to remove some of the water — at least for some recipes.

While we’re biased toward fresh pumpkin, quite frankly, in many recipes we have a hard time telling the difference between fresh and canned. And we often use commercially canned pumpkin for the convenience. Most recipes call for pumpkin puree but that’s not the only way you can use fresh pumpkin. You can grate fresh pumpkin and add it to your bread or muffins. It’s even good in a casserole or in a soup. Grated pumpkin will give you attractive flecks of orange in your bread or muffins and a little chewier texture. But since most recipes call for puree, here’s how to prepare it: 1. Cut a sugar or pie pumpkin in half. (Some thin-walled pumpkins are stringy and not as good for baking.) Remove the seeds. Place the halves in a baking pan, flesh side down with 3/4 inch of water in the pan. Bake for 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees or until the flesh is tender. (For small quantities, you can cook the pumpkin in the microwave.) 2. After the pumpkin has cooled, scoop the flesh out, place it in a food blender, processor, or your food mill and process it until it is smooth. If stringy filaments remain, strain it. 3. Often, especially from smaller or immature pumpkins, the puree will not be thick enough — a spoon should stand upright in the puree. To thicken, place the puree in a saucepan and cook, stirring often, until the puree becomes thicker.

In some recipes, it doesn’t matter whether the puree is thin. If you add a thin puree to a yeasted bread recipe, you’ll have to add a little more flour to compensate. That’s not a problem. If you are making pancakes, the thinner puree just means less water or milk to get the same consistency. On the other hand, if you are making cookies or scones or muffins, balance matters. You can add more flour or less liquid and it may turn out okay but you won’t know without trying. PumPkin BreaD reciPe In the following bread recipe, you may use a thinner puree. Just be prepared to adjust the amount of flour that you use to accommodate different moisture contents of the pumpkin puree. This is a great pumpkin bread recipe! It has an attractive orange color, it’s moist, and it’s packed with nutrition and flavor. We usually make it with white bread flour but you can substitute whole wheat flour. (If you use all whole wheat, add several tablespoons of wheat gluten.) The recipe calls for raisins but walnuts make it a great pumpkin bread also. This bread is not sweet like a dessert bread. You can add more sugar if you like. If you choose, add one cup of chopped walnuts. Incidentally, try this bread toasted with red current jelly. It is terrific! ingreDientS • 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups white bread flour (you can substitute up to 3 cups whole wheat flour) • 1/4 cup brown sugar

• 1 seven-gram packet of instant yeast • 1 1/3 cup warm water, 110 degrees • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 cup pureed pumpkin or canned pumpkin • 1/2 tablespoon salt • 6 tablespoons melted butter • 1 1/2 cups raisins, golden raisins, or currents DirectionS 1. Place half the bread flour, sugar, and yeast in the bowl of your stand-type mixer. Add the warm water and beat with a dough hook until it is partially mixes. (The purpose of this mix is to hydrate the yeast.) 2. Add the rest of the flour, the spices, the pumpkin, the salt, and the butter. Knead with the dough hook at medium speed for four minutes. When the dough comes together, add the raisins and continue beating for the remainder of the four minutes or until the gluten is developed. You will likely need to adjust the moisture level either by adding flour or water. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn once, and cover. Set the bowl in a warm place and allow it to double in size. 3. Grease two 9 x 5-inch loaf pans. Form two loaves, cover them, and let them rise until doubled and puffy. 4. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until done. The internal temperature should be at 190 to 200 degrees. Remove the loaves from the pans and let the bread cool on a wire rack. Baker’s Note: The pumpkin in this bread makes it very moist. Pumpkin has a very mild flavor and acts as background for the spices and this has a mild bread combination of spices. Add more spices if you prefer. Read more lifestyle stories at www.militaryingermany.com
