SEAC shares priorities, goals, advice by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has four priorities that I make it a point to discuss when I speak to groups such as these at Ramstein and in the Kaiserslautern Military Community,” said Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, the senior enlisted adviser to the CJCS, during his visit to Ramstein Air Base and the KMC Tuesday and Wednesday. While visiting multiple units, Airmen, Soldiers and wounded warriors, the SEAC shared the CJCS’s four priorities and talked about reducing suicide, divorce and sexual assault throughout the military. The priorities aim to achieve national objectives in the current conflicts, develop Joint Force 2020, keep faith with the military family and renew the commitment to the profession of arms, Battaglia said. During the visit, the SEAC had the opportunity to share his thoughts and goals with more than 20 Airmen and NCOs during lunch. “It’s an honor to be able to have lunch with the most senior NCO in the U.S. armed forces,” said Airman 1st Class Davis James, 603rd Air and Space See VISIT, Page 9

African air chiefs pledge cooperation, trust, solutions Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards AFAFRICA Public Affairs DAKAR, Senegal — The 2012 Regional Air Chiefs’ Conference wrapped up here Aug. 30, leaving military leaders from multiple North and Western African nations excited about progress and resolutions involving an increase in regional coordination. One of the main points was, “the need to share information,” said Ghana air force Air Cmdr. Philip Ayisa, Tamale air force base, Ghana, commander. “African countries need to come together to decisively coordinate and face these challenges together,” he said. The attending African nations communally agree that each country, individually, does not have the

equipment, resources or air power necessary to combat all aspects of national defense. However, they accept that together it can be done. “Participation and cooperation (among African countries) is key to the improvement of our capabilities, our personnel readiness and the multiple challenges and security challenges in the region,” said Nigerian Air Marshall M.D. Umar, chief of the Nigerian air force. On the opening day, the group discussed crossregional issues (common threats and challenges) affecting all African nations in attendance. “This discussion group reflects a sincere commitment to our collective efforts,” said Maj. Gen. See CONFERENCE, Page 8

Priority two: professional development by Chief Master Sgt. James Morris 86th Airlift Wing command chief Editor’s note: This is No. 2 of 5 articles in a series highlighting the priorities of the 86th Airlift Wing.

Commentary

Develop professional Airmen, warriors, leaders. The second of our wing’s priorities drives us to develop a lifestyle in which we constantly work to improve ourselves. This is at the heart of our Air Force core value, “Excellence In All We Do,” and at the personal level it states, “Military professionals must seek out and complete professional military education, stay in physical and mental shape, and continue to refresh their general educational backgrounds.”1 On the surface, this seems relatively easy; we complete professional military education at clearly defined points in our careers to develop the skills required as we advance in rank and responsibility. Additionally, we actively pursue educational opportunities, such as Community College of the Air Force and bachelors and masters degrees, which improve our ability to think critically as we work through problems in a dynamic world. Finally, we complete technical certifications designed to make Airmen the consummate technical experts in their given area of expertise. All of these items make us better leaders, adaptive thinkers and technical experts so that we perform our tasks with great efficiency and

effectiveness. But what does it mean to be a professional Airman? Vice Adm. Ann Rondeau writes, “There are aspects that surround us and there are aspects that are inside us as military professionals.” Furthermore, she states that, “The former include ethos, culture and meaning; the latter center on identity.”2 In our Air Force, we have many documents

that help us understand our ethos, culture, meaning and identity. Take our core values: integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do. These core values tell us the price of admission to the Air Force and point to what is universal and unchanging in the profession of arms.3 See PRIORITY, next page

CBRN defense skills training could save your life by Staff Sgt. Bryan Dudley 886th Civil Engineer Squadron, Emergency Management Office In our world of 24/7 news and social media, and with just about everyone on an iPhone, trends emerge, spread and fade faster than ever before. We’re apt to flock to what is new and interesting and let what once commanded our attention fade into memory. This isn’t just a phenomenon in the world of entertainment; this also applies to how we focus on what threatens our safety. The last decade has brought us terrorism and unconventional warfare. As a result, this is what

conflict within a nation state. Most of the violence in these conflicts is low level, as compared to conventional war, and uses small arms. But, in the last decade, we have still seen armies lacing up their boots and going to war as uniformed soldiers fighting for a sovereign state. In 1999, nuclear-armed foes, India and Pakistan, engaged one another in a brief border war. Russia and Georgia fought for a few days in 2008, with Russia still occupying territory internationally recognized as being part of Georgia. Our most recent conflicts have not been as cut

18th MP Bde. Soldiers increase law enforcement capabilities Story and photos by Capt. Amanda Kehrrington 18th Military Police Brigade Public Affairs GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — The Columbine High School massacre occurred on April 16, 2007. The Virginia Tech massacre took place on Nov. 5, 2009. Nidal Malik Hasan was accused of killing 13 people in the worst shooting to ever take place on an American military base. And on July 20, James Holmes opened PRIORITY, from Page 2

Additionally, they help us get a fix on the ethical climate of an organization and serve as beacons vectoring us back to the path of professional conduct.3 The core values are “much more than minimum standards. They remind us what it takes to get the mission done. They inspire us to do our best at all times. They are the common bond among comrades in arms, and they are the glue that unifies the force and ties us to the great warriors and public servants of the past.”1 Our Airman’s Creed and Air Force symbol also play a large part in helping us to develop as military professionals. Our Air Force symbol, with its updated elements of the Hap Arnold wings and star with circle, reminds us of our Air Corps heritage and helps us to reflect on the Air Force of today and tomorrow.3 Our Airman’s Creed codifies this by reinvigorating the warrior spirit and articulating the fundamental beliefs that capture the essence of the Airman warrior and our dedication to our mission of flying, fighting and winning in air, space and cyberspace.3 The goal of our second priority, develop professional Airmen, warriors and leaders, is designed to put an increased emphasis on Airmen development. It creates a mindset within us and reminds us that we should constantly improve ourselves and cultivate an

environment where we challenge each other to be better Airmen. There are many tools at our disposal to help with this. Very simply put, we can take courses at a local university, attend the appropriate level of professional military education when it is our time or attend seminars. Additionally, we can read Air Force instructions and Air Force or joint doctrine to make sure we are performing our functions correctly. Furthermore, we can read a book listed on the chief of staff of the Air Force’s reading list to not only help us understand a bit of history, but also help us gain a better understanding of the events taking place today and gain a glimpse of where we may be heading in the future. Finally, we can participate in core group sessions to develop our understanding of all of these topics as a team. Knowing exactly when we have achieved that optimum level of professionalism will be hard to ascertain. However, I think there will be some obvious signs as you travel around our base. For instance, Airmen will take increased pride in their organizations, and the overall appearance of our facilities will improve as Airmen keep their areas clean, keep the landscaping well manicured, and keep weeds from popping up on sidewalks and curbs. Airmen will take note of what is hanging on the walls within their organizations and

update them in order to reflect their pride and show all visitors how good they are. Finally, complaints will start to disappear. Airmen will become more proficient in their jobs and take more pride in the work they perform that they will go the proverbial “extra mile” in order to get the job done right the first time, further enhancing their reputations as consummate professionals. Our commitment to developing professional Airmen is essential to ensuring we maintain the best led and best trained force in the world.4 Our future success depends upon our future Airmen who will fight and win wars long after we are gone. Their success depends on how we develop them now while working toward our vision of capable, credible, responsive Airmen — operationally ready and honored to serve! References 1. ACTION LINE QUESTION: I’m concerned about the brown metal boxes being installed at the gates. The rumor is the boxes scan vehicles for questionable materials or items — much like TSA’s body scanners at airports. While I fully support base security measures, I’m concerned about the radiation levels my kids and I are being subjected to each time we enter the base. I also wonder about the other pregnant women entering the base each day. Could you please explain the purpose of the scanners, what the radiation levels are (and if they are safe for kids/pregnant ladies), and what will the procedure be for pregnant women entering the base? Will there be an area where we can walk

around and show our IDs to the guards? ANSWER: Thank you for your concern regarding the new security measures being installed at our entry points. While specific details cannot be provided regarding security equipment function, the 86th Civil Engineer Group can assure you that the “brown boxes” at the base entry points are completely passive and do not use emitters to accomplish their function. This system poses absolutely no hazard to people or vehicles; therefore, no additional procedures are required at the entrance to the installation. The system has been put in place to increase protection of the installation and its users.

and dry as one nation against another, but they still occur and we must still be prepared to fight this kind of war. Long-range missile programs are one facet of conventional warfare that we have spent billions of dollars to develop and defend against. Missiles the size of a school bus being launched at us is frightening enough, but even more so when we consider that those missiles could be fitted with warheads filled with deadly chemicals. Could we ever use this training? At least once a month, emergency management instructors instructing Chemical, Biological, Radiological/Nuclear Defense Survival Skills are asked, “Have we ever been attacked with nerve agents?” Sometimes, it’s a disgruntled challenge, but often the question is asked out of a genuine interest in the threat posed to today’s Airmen. There is not a short answer that can be given to this question, so the simplest answer given is, “No, but …” American air bases have never been attacked with chemical warfare agents via a missile. Our service members have been targeted by Scud missiles during both campaigns against Iraq during Saddam Hussein’s rule. Those missiles were not fitted with chemical or biological warheads even though Iraq had produced and used chemical weapons in the past. During Iraq’s eight-year war with Iran, the Iraqi military brazenly used chemical weapons against the Iranian army, causing at least 10,000 casualties as a result. Iraq used artillery rounds to deliver chemical munitions against the Iranians, but they had a robust missile program and launched at least 361 missiles into Iran. These missile strikes could have been several times deadlier had the Iraqis had the ability to fit those missiles with chemical warheads. More than two decades since that war has ended, some nations still possess chemical warfare agent warheads and long range missiles and the technology that once eluded Iraq — the ability to fit the warheads to the missiles. Iran and North Korea are two of those nations. The U.S. has service members stationed within range of Iranian and North Korean missiles. That is why we need to recognize this threat as being just as real and dangerous as any other. Take it seriously; the threats are real So, the next time you find yourself sitting in front of the computer re-accomplishing your CBRN CBT, don’t just use the “click-click” technique. Keep in mind that the information in that computerized training might just save your life or your wingman’s life. Then, when you’re MOPPing-up during your CBRN hands-on class, recognize the importance of correctly donning the gear and consider the consequences if you don’t. The gear was not created to annoy, frustrate or hinder you. It was designed to keep you safe. We may never have to use the skills we’re taught in CBRN DSS, but as they say, “An ounce of prevention is more valuable than a pound of cure.”

Regimental CSMs tour communities Story by Staff Sgt. Michael J. Taylor 21st TSC Public Affairs

T

he 21st Theater Sustainment Command is hosting a multiregimental command sergeants major community tour from Tuesday to Sept. 14 in the communities of Bamberg, Grafenwöhr, Heidelberg and Kaiserslautern. The regimental command sergeants major participating in the tour are from the force sustainment career management fields, and the 21st TSC organized the tour as the unit responsible for all force sustainment (except medical) in the Army in Europe, said Sgt. Maj. Bryan L. Novak, the personnel sergeant major for the 21st TSC and a St. Paul, Minn., native. “We felt it was our duty to provide this opportunity for all of the force sustainment Soldiers in the Ordnance, Transportation, Finance, Adjutant General and Quartermaster Corps,” Novak said. “This visit will also allow us to showcase what some of our

Soldiers are doing.” During the tour, Soldiers can expect to get an update on their regiment. Their regimental CSMs will tell the Soldiers and leaders the “State of the Corps.” This will include any changes that may be occurring with the structure of military occupational specialties or unit structures across the Army that affect each corps. Each regimental CSM will also speak about their respective Army Career Tracker and tell the Soldiers and their leaders what “gates” Soldiers should be hitting at each grade. These gates include civilian and military education and what types of jobs Soldiers should be seeking to make them more competitive for promotion. Accompanying each regimental CSM (except Quartermaster) will be the branch sergeant major from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, who is in charge of overseeing assignments within their branch. Soldiers will be provided the opportunity to have a one-on-one

interview with their branch SGM to discuss their individual career plans and how HRC can help each Soldier get an assignment that aligns with Army manning guidance and the Army Career Tracker for their MOS. The regimental CSMs will be visiting the communities to talk with anyone, not just Soldiers from the 21st TSC. Officers and civilians, who are leaders of Soldiers in these career fields, are also encouraged to attend, so that they are better able to provide proper counseling and guidance to the Soldiers that they supervise ensuring that their Soldiers are more competitive for promotion, Novak said. Battaglia: Engage troubled troops, reach out by Claudette Roulo American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — The military’s top enlisted leader wants service members to use September’s National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month as an opportunity to learn what to do when a fellow service member, family member or veteran reaches out for help. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan B. Battaglia, senior enlisted adviser to Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said service members who seek assistance — and those who are in a position to offer it — need to know that it’s OK not to be OK. “We can still operate and function as effective service members (and) effective family members within our armed forces, within life (and) as members within society and not be 100 percent fit,” Battaglia said. “Like myself, for example. From some combat wounds and injuries over the years, I’m no longer 100 percent, and that’s OK by me, because I understand that it’s OK not to be OK.” Thanks to the resilience programs such as Total Force Fitness, Battaglia added, he has been able to better assess his fitness levels and return his mind, body and spirit to a new optimal level of performance. “I believe each person has their own threshold of when they may need help or assistance,” he said. “The moment that indicator lights up within yourself that (you) need some help and assistance or things are not right ... it is time to reach out.”

Service members, family members or veterans don’t have to wait until they feel suicidal to take advantage of the services offered by the military and the Veterans Affairs Department, Battaglia said. And the need to reach out can revolve around any sort of adversity or challenge that arises in a person’s life, he added. But no matter what the situation may be, asking for assistance is the crucial first step, Battaglia said, and there are many places to turn to for help. Each service has specific programs shaped and tailored toward its service members and families, he said, and VA also has programs that provide for veterans. The Military Crisis Line — 1-800-273-8255 — is “one common denominator throughout the entire department,” Battaglia said. Service members, family members and veterans in need of assistance, either for themselves or for a loved one, can call the number day or night to speak to someone. “That someone who will answer will be a medical health official ... with the background and expertise to make some immediate assessments,” he said. “That phone call has complete confidentiality.” Battaglia said he uses the acronym NOW to educate service members about suicide prevention. The “N” means, “There’s NO problem too big that should cause an individual to take his or her own life,” he said. “If you have a problem that you can’t solve, come to someone — a leader, a chaplain, a commander — and, by God, we can solve it together.” The “O” is for OUTREACH, he said. he threat of rain did not stop the members of the KMC who gathered at the new Army and Air Force Exchange Service KMC Express Store grand opening Aug. 31 on Ramstein. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held with Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th Airlift Wing commander; Col. Fred Hannah, AAFES Europe-Southwest Asia commander; Chief Master Sgt. James Morris, 86th Airlift Wing command chief; John Sharpe, AAFES Europe-Southwest Asia area manager; Jeffrey Crisp, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern deputy commander; and Airman 1st Class Lesli Jimenez, Airman of the Quarter. Hyde opened the ceremony with remarks to the AAFES staff and supporters. “Thank you for representing what you are — a part of this community,” he said. “Community is a team endeavor. Thank you for being our faithful partner.” The $7 million, 11,000-square-foot express store equipped with 28 gas pumps is the biggest gas station in Europe and took only a year to complete. “Outreach is literally a fingertip away — and that outreach can come from texting your team leader to knocking on your chaplain’s door or even notifying an immediate family member,” he said. “But outreach is literally a fingertip away.” As importantly, the “W” stands for WE care. “As leaders, we understand and clearly recognize that, as members of this professional organization, our men and women have committed to our nation and we are committed to them,” he said. “This is an equal opportunity issue; it affects everyone. So whether it is junior leaders, senior leaders or non-leaders, anyone who comes abreast of a person who looks or appears like they may want to hurt themselves, it’s time to engage and act immediately.” Leaders have the added responsibility of dealing with the aftermath of a death by suicide, Battaglia said, which can further strip away at morale, cohesion and unit readiness if left untreated. “As leaders, we are taught, molded and developed to be problem solvers,”

“Facilities like this enable combat power and make life more convenient and bring us a taste of home,” Hyde said. Open 24/7, the facility also offers customers video rentals, simple housewares and a large snack avenue he said. “Problem solving is good, but a goal for all of us is to be the problem preventer. Our ultimate objective (in prevention) is essentially removing suicide out of one’s decision making process or as a possible course of action in solving a troop’s personal problem.” There’s no one reason or indicator that leaders can rely upon, in capturing the “why” of suicide, Battaglia said. “However,” he added, “active leadership engagement is an area where many leaders, specifically my peer group, believe we can improve.” Engaged leaders will be better able to detect and help troubled troops, Battaglia said. “There’s so much time spent together that leaders will better know their people and can pick up changes from one’s normal disposition or behavior,” he said. And it’s a year-round job, the sergeant major added. “While September is officially designated as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, this issue is so important to the health of our force that we need to treat every month as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month,” he said.

with a wider assortment of items. It also provides the widest selection of beverages from across Europe housed in 24 large coolers. “We are delighted to be a part of this community,” Hannah said. “We were able to enhance the KMC

by combining three facilities into one. We couldn’t have done it without the support of the staff and community.” The new exchange store is now the only operating gas station on Ramstein.

CONFERENCE, from Page 1

threat instructor training course Aug. 20 to 24, graduating 30 18th MP Brigade Soldiers. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the course takes active shooter threat tactics training to the next level by emphasizing leadership, teach backs, and adult learning, as well as the traditional technical skills needed by field training officers and special agents. “Planning a mobile training team to come from Homeland Security to Germany is something we don’t often get; this is a once in a multiyear event and the opportunity to have them here as such an accredited and recognized organization is phenomenal,” Kirschner said. Professional law enforcement is the No. 1 line of effort for MP Soldiers. This course started Soldiers with the fundamentals, principles and methodology and progressed into more dynamic realistic scenarios. “This training is extremely important. Unfortunately, it’s a skill you will never need until the time arises,” said Staff Sgt. Donald Johnson, 529th MP Company squad leader, 95th MP Bn, 18th MP Bde. “It’s a perishable skill. It conflicts with our tactical training, so it’s hard for Soldiers to get out of the tactical mindset and get back into the law enforcement mindset, because things are so different. But it is very vital, because at a moment’s notice we could be called and we need to be ready.” This type of training is required for military police as law enforcement professionals and must be trained as a first responder in any emergency situation. Traditionally, law enforcement would wait for SWAT or other assistance before moving inside. Since Columbine, traditional response is no longer taught. “The sooner law enforcement officers can get in there the more lives we save,” said Thomas Crabill, senior instructor for the Active Shooter Threat Instructor Training Program, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. “In nontraditional response, the first responders have to move

Carlton Everhart, 3rd Air Force vice commander. “Capacity building has continued to be the focus of what we have done here this week, and I think we’ve learned a lot from each other.” The second day focused on the use of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and strategic airlift in Africa and how to properly enable the sharing and inter-cooperation of these assets within the affected African nations. “ISR is more than just an aircraft, more than just sensors. It takes a considerable amount of manpower to put it together and placed in the right hands in a timely manner,” said Col. Gordon Hendrickson, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa director of intelligence. “It’s important for us to draw together these air chiefs from throughout Africa and help guide them into coming up with those solutions to many of the unique challenges that they face.” Strategic airlift capabilities in African countries are also limited due to the limited resources available. “Strategic airlift remains a critical supporting capability that should be achieved, maintained and improved,” said Ghana air force wing commander, Nana Adu-Gyamfi. “A systematic use of pulled and shared (strategic airlift) assets would reduce duplication, overhead and medium, and longterm capabilities.” The last subject discussed was the use of air-ground integration where Lt. Col. Craig McCarty, 435th Air Ground Operations Squadron commander, spoke about the capabilities close air support can bring to the fight. “CAS is something that can help bring together the African armies and air forces to allow them to work more efficiently with each other,” McCarty said. “In the long term, it will act as the baseline information for when each country starts cooperating and working together.” At the end of the conference, Everhart had a few parting words for all the attendees. The conference ended as a resounding success as military leaders packed up and prepared to leave Senegal to bring home lessons learned, an understanding of the challenges affecting the region and possible solutions to those challenges. “Thank you so much for this opportunity. It’s an immense effort that we’ve put together here and I look forward to making great strides in progress for the benefit of these nations,” Everhart said.

Staff Sgt. Jason Taggart, 615th Military Police Company, 709th MP Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, enters a room with a suspected active shooter inside and fires on the active shooter during a scenario during an Active Shooter Threat Instructor Training Program taught by federal law enforcement instructors from the Department of Homeland Security Aug. 20 to 24 in Grafenwöhr, Germany.

in. We teach them to move in there by themselves as quickly as possible to at least pin down the shooter and get them in an environment where they can’t kill innocent civilians.” This training course not only teaches the Soldiers to be operators in response to an active shooter, but certifies them to be accredited instructors so they can go back to their home stations and teach the active shooter threat response training to their subordinates down to the lowest level. “I hope they take away the ability to not only perform the response tactics they learn but also to relay them to their Soldiers and actually teach this to their Soldiers in order to improve our security posture,” Kirschner said. Kirschner said there are some steps being taken to professionalize law enforcement in Germany and across the 18th MP Brigade. “We are taking many steps to professionalize it, and by bringing in accredited programs and making certified instructors in all different levels of force, response and tactics, that is going to make our program that much better,” he said.

721st APS knows its cargo Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Taking charge of cargo, passengers and the many processes that go into loading an aircraft, the 721st Aerial Port Squadron’s mission is to develop Airmen, provide air transportation services at Ramstein and sustain three combatant commands. The 721st APS was responsible for helping move more than 65,722 tons of cargo, 285,735 passengers and 16,000 aircraft last year. None of that could be done without the help of the many sections within the 721st APS. “The load planning flight selects cargo for movement based on destination, priority and system entry time to fully maximize usable space on aircraft with cargo and passengers,” said Senior Master Sgt. Rich Rizzo, 721st APS squadron operations superintendent. “They ensure safety of flight by determining center of balance with all cargo selected for movement.” With help from the load planning section, the cargo processing flight helps build, weigh, measure, secure, cap and process all originating cargo for movement via air. “They also help with the breakdown of terminating cargo, make sure everything is accounted for and segregate it for onward movement via surface,” Rizzo said. While the cargo processing section is responsible for building and breaking down each pallet, the Mechanized Material Handling System sorts each pallet to expedite loading procedures. “We use the MMHS to help us prioritize and move pallets,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Stirewalt, 721st APS load planning supervisor. The MMHS can move cargo easily, and has pictures from four different angles. It also has a 3-D picture for the load planner to use while planning

where cargo needs to go on an aircraft. “Having to move and palletize 42 pallets of cargo at any other base can take up to an hour,” Stirewalt said. “With the MMHS, it cuts that time down drastically, therefore helping us keep the mission moving.” Helping with the loading and unloading of cargo is the special handling and in-transit munitions sections. Special handling is in the name and it’s also a part of what they do. “Our sections handle all human remains, hazardous material, refrigerated materials, registered mail and ice or re-ice sensitive cargo,” said Master Sgt. Christian Peters, 721st NCOIC of special handling. “We additionally prepare and inspect the cargo.” Airmen are trained in a one-week course that certifies them as hazardous

“The NCO carries the historical adage in our military,” Battaglia said. “You can be a significant and positive impact to any young service member to lead them in a way where they will serve their military in a positive and productive manner.” Part of being a rolemodel NCO is staying resilient. Having a high-profile job comes with many stresses, and Battaglia shared his

materials inspectors. “Getting hazardous materials cleared takes a lot of coordinating with the German government to make sure the cargo is authorized,” Peters said. All the hazardous cargo must be precisely packaged and handled properly. “Everyday our Airmen have to ensure the safe packaging and loading of hazardous material, which is key to guaranteeing the ‘safety of flight’ for the multimillion dollar cargo, aircraft, passengers and aircrew onboard,” Peters said. None of the cargo movements could be done without the help of ramp services, Rizzo said. They provide the safe and timely loading and unloading of cargo on a wide variety of commercial and military aircraft.

routines for staying resilient. “I make use of the Total Force Fitness program to bring inner peace and relaxation,” Battaglia said. “I try to take the time out of my busy schedule to golf, jog and get good physical training in daily.” Additionally, Battaglia visited the contingency aeromedical staging facility where he met and talked with wounded warriors.

“Being a part of the 721st and knowing that by doing my job it helps get loved ones home to their families is very rewarding,” Peters said. Just by doing their day-to-day job, the 721st APS helps the mission at home in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. “The movement of fallen warriors through Ramstein back to CONUS is a sobering reminder that there are military service members in close contact with the enemy,” said Lt. Col. Melvin Maxwell, 721st APS commander. “We understand those members depend on Airmen of the 721st APS to do our jobs effectively to ensure they are sustained.” (Editor’s Note: This is the second article in a three-part series on 721st APS operations.)

“I was very impressed with the wounded warriors, Airmen, Soldiers and their families,” Battaglia said. “It is always an honor when I get a chance to shake the hands of the men and women that serve with me.” Battaglia’s visit also included an enlisted call and a tour of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “The action-packed itinerary gave me a great taste of

the things Team Ramstein has to offer in support of the combatant commands,” Battaglia said. “I am impressed with the personnel and beautification of the base. It sets as a role model for other bases.” For more information on the SEAC’s travels, follow him on Twitter at www. twitter.com/seac_jcs and on Facebook at www.facebook. com/seac.jcs.

Employee leaves 46-year legacy by Stefan Alford Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs In April 1966, America was embroiled in an increasingly unpopular war half a world away while the No. 1 song in the nation was “Ballad of the Green Berets,” by U.S. Army combat medic Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler. Other popular music acts included the Beach Boys and Rolling Stones, while that year’s television programming featured numerous shows that would be nostalgically adapted into future big-screen versions: “Mission Impossible,” “Batman,” “The Wild Wild West,” “Star Trek,” “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Bewitched” and “Get Smart.” Amid this background of domestic tension and shifting popular culture, 17-year-old Ruth Schirra first came to work at Landstuhl’s second General Hospital (precursor to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center) as an administrative specialist. They say the more things change, the more they stay the same, and 46 years later, America was engaged in an increasingly unpopular war half a world away, the Rolling Stones and Beach Boys were still around, another 1966 TV show was revamped as “Dark Shadows” played in cinemas, and Ruth Schirra was still coming to work at LRMC. “The corridors look exactly the same,” she said, adding that sometimes she gets flashbacks of how things used to be by just walking down those unchanged hallways. At the end of September, however, the longest term civilian employee at LRMC will walk in the medical center doors and through the halls for the last time. After nearly half a century,

Schirra officially retires Sept. 30. “Time has just gone by so fast, it’s hard to believe,” said the pharmacy department secretary who has spent just as much time using a typewriter on the job as she has a computer. Her first position at the hospital was with the dental service, where the nearby born-and-raised Hermersberg native applied after high school on the suggestion of a friend who worked for the Americans here. “My English was good,” she said, “but it was the British English, so I got a lot of funny looks at first. Now, I speak English more than my own language.” Along with her adopted language, “her sense of humor and attitude sometimes make you wonder, is she really German?” said Harry Raith, LRMC chief of safety and Schirra’s colleague since 2001. “She is always very positive,” he said. “However, she manages to fool you with an absolute straight face.” Raith cited an example from a 2004 employee trip to Trier. It was June and 98 degrees Fahrenheit, yet Schirra convinced her fellow staff that she had spent the day figure skating at an ice rink. “She has touched many lives here,” said Raith, who has spent many years as a member of the LRMC German Works Council. “Working at LRMC without her is hard to imagine — almost like France without red wine or Wisconsin without cheese.” Through the years, Schirra has worked in several areas of the hospital, including the now-defunct automated data processing branch, nuclear research, and the radioisotope section (now nuclear medicine), before joining the pharmacy staff in 1993. Asked what it was like working here back in the ’60s and ’70s, she

laughed and said, “Not as hectic, that’s for sure. It was a different pace back then.” “The mission of this place is patients,” she said, and with two major combat operations going on for the better part of the last decade, that mission has unfortunately grown. “The administrative staff across all departments is integral to the mission and we have a great team here. I’ll miss the friends I’ve made and I’ll miss the challenges and having a structured routine.” She’ll certainly be missed by those who have come to rely on her job expertise, continuity and friendly attitude, said Lt. Col. Rodney Jorstad, the director of the pharmacy. “She has an incredible memory regarding programs and people,” Jorstad said. “Just imagine how much knowledge and history we are losing. Quite simply, she knows everything and everybody and is loved by everyone who has had the pleasure to work with her. She always has a positive

and caring attitude, big smile, and puts others’ needs before hers. People don’t just think of her as an outstanding person to work with — they consider her a friend.” Schirra plans to stay occupied in other ways once retired. “I have a family, a house and a huge dog that will keep me busy,” she said. “I’ll also do some traveling and work on my genealogy research.” After six decades at LRMC, she could easily do a facility-related “genealogy” project. “This used to be pathology,” she said of the pharmacy area, “and the pharmacy used to be by the front doors where patient administration is now when I came to the section. The basic infrastructure hasn’t changed overall, and the DFAC (dining facility) has always been where it’s at and the church is still the same.” One thing that will soon be different, however, is the corridors will have one less long-time fixture in them.

Page 22 FESTIVAL, from Page 15 from the fact that early fest goers ate enormous amounts of sausage during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main attraction of the fest are 36 little wine tents called “Schubkärchler,” wheelbarrows, because vintners rolled wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to Michelsberg hill to quench pilgrims’ thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrims visited the little chapel on top of the hill, which resulted in market activities with many vendors selling their goods on the hill and along the streets leading up to the chapel. When church dignitaries no longer accepted this type of pilgrimage, market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the “sausage fair” was born. While vendors lost in importance throughout the years, amusement features became more and more important. In the year 1830, there was a circus, fire-eater, puppet theater, riding school, showmen and musicians. In the year 1910, city officials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michaels’ day, because of better weather. Ever since 1985, Wurstmarkt celebrations have taken place for nine days. During World War II, the event didn’t take place, and after the war, in 1947, a fall fest has been celebrated instead. In 1948, there was a fish market due to the lack of meat. Vendors sold fish sandwiches and fish wurst. On top of that, each visitor was allowed only one bottle of wine. The first regular Wurstmarkt after the war took place in 1949. The little wine tents (Schubkärchler) will open at 10 a.m. each day. Various bands perform party music, traditional jazz, rock, pop and German folks music in the fest tents. For more information, visit www.duerkheimer-wurstmarkt.de. The German railroad company, Deutsche Bahn, offer rides from Kaiserslautern to Bad Dürkheim every 30 minutes. Passengers have to change trains in Neustadt. Tickets cost €20.50 for two to five passengers. Tickets are available at the ticket machines; just touch the VRN screen, choose Bad Dürkheim and then click on Wurstmarkt-Ticket.
