Many Soldiers stationed in the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria footprint are thousands of miles from loved ones this holiday season, often for the first time. Some also deal with limited financial means in the last few months of the year. USAG Bavaria and the Religious Support Office have a way to help. Operation Helping Hand 2021 will occur this holiday season for the Soldiers and families in need of financial support. The USAG Bavaria RSO runs the program with monetary assistance from mission partners like Service Credit Union and the Defense Commissary Agency. “When we see the joy in their hearts and smiles on their faces due to this small gift, we feel that we are fulfilling our call to care and serve our Soldiers and their families,” said Chaplain (Maj.) Abrahamyoungki Kim, chaplaincy resource manager with USAG Bavaria. “We are truly honored to have an opportunity like this to serve.” According to Kim, USAG Bavaria assisted over 200 Soldiers during last year’s operation. Soldiers from Tower Barracks, Rose Barracks, Garmisch and Hohenfels received a DeCA gift
son,” said USAG Bavaria Garrison Commander Col. Christopher Danbeck. “It’s just another way we can give back to our hardworking and deserving Soldiers and families. I hope that Operation Helping Hand offers all of us here in Bavaria the opportunity to better enjoy this holiday season.” Across the USAG Bavaria footprint, every unit will have the opportunity to nominate Soldiers to receive assistance from Operation Helping Hand. Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, Dec. 3. Once Soldiers are selected, the RSO will disseminate the gift cards through the tenant unit’s individual Unit Ministry Teams in the second week of December. To nominate a Soldier for Operation Helping Hand, reach out to your chain of command, Unit Ministry Team or USAG Bavaria Chaplaincy Resource Manager at DSN: 314-569-7052.

As part of a special program to naturalize active duty military members and their families, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria hosted a two-day virtual naturalization ceremony at the Tower Barracks Conference Center on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5. In total, 68 candidates from 30 countries were administered the Oath of Allegiance. Included in both ceremonies were special remarks from USAG Bavaria Garrison Commander Col. Christopher Danbeck. “Today, the history of America begins a new chapter in your hearts. You have chosen the United States of America as your country,” said Danbeck. “The fact that you made the choice to do this — on top of serving in the Armed Forces for a county that wasn’t your own until today — makes it even more awe inspiring in my opinion. Thank you for making these choices.” Following the national anthem, the Oath of Allegiance was virtually conducted by a representative with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Ceremony candidates, who took the oath, are stationed at garrisons across Germany, including: 49 candidates from USAG Bavaria, 16 candidates from USAG Ansbach, one candidate from USAG Baumholder and one candidate from the Kaiserslautern area. Additionally, one candidate even traveled to the ceremony from Poland. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, this was the second time a virtual naturalization ceremony was ever conducted at USAG Bavaria. According to Military Personnel Division Chief Michele Crawford, as long as USCIS requires assistance with this hybrid ceremony, the garrison is ready to support the joint effort. “All the candidates are relieved that we’ve been able to come up with ways that they can complete this process, and not have to wait years due to the pandemic,” said Crawford. “They have been really appreciative, and just excited, to finally be able to reach this last step in their journey to citizenship.”

USAG Bavaria recognizes over 1,100 years of combined civilian service By Julian Temblador USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Thirty-four German and American civilian employees were recognized by Col. Christopher Danbeck, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, at a Length of Service ceremony on Oct. 15, 2021, at the USAG Bavaria Tower View Conference Center in Tower Barracks. During the ceremony, Col. Danbeck, USAG Bavaria Command Sgt. Maj. Sebastian Camacho and the Local Works Council Chairman, Wolfgang Dagner, presented awards to civilian employees for 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service. “Today, we have come together to honor some of our most dedicated employees,” Danbeck said. “We are fortunate to have you here in Bavaria as you continue to demonstrate a deep interest in the welfare of this community.” One awardee, Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation employee, Melvin Gonzales, was awarded during the ceremony for 45 years of service to the U.S. Army. Present at the ceremony were the Bürgermeisters, or mayors, of the awardees who were recognized during the ceremony. Each Bürgermeister congratulated and took photos alongside the awardees.

Garmisch: A skiers’ paradise in the Bavarian Alps Andrea Griesser USAG Bavaria Public Affairs As the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics, Garmisch-Partenkirchen has over 60 kilometers of ski slopes with varying levels of difficulty. Community members can find family-friendly slopes in the Garmisch Classic Area as well as World Cup racing conditions on the famous Kandahar slope on the Osterfelder mountain. The ski season usually starts right before Christmas and ends towards the end of March. Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers skiing at three mountain locations: the Hausberg, the Alpspitze/Osterfelder and the Kreuzeck (Garmisch Classic). Although they basically merge into one big ski area, there are three different cable cars — one for each area. For the 2021/2022 season, prices start at 50 euros per day for adults. The ticket is valid for the entire Garmisch Classic Area, and you can easily get from the Hausberg to the Osterfelder area by crossing the Kreuzeck slopes. The gentle slopes around the Hausberg area are perfect for beginners and families. The Kinderland by Hausberg offers fun for the little ones on skies. Additionally, there are several ski schools that offer classes for everyone. Several mountain huts, in close vicinity of the slopes, invite adventurers to take a break. When resting, you can enjoy traditional Bavarian food while either sitting near a cozy Kachelofen — a wood burning oven — or enjoying the sun out on the terrace overlooking breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. bottom of the slopes as well as downtown in the pedestrian zone. There, you can enjoy Gluehwein — mulled wine — or hot chocolate and maybe a bratwurst or crepes. The high-altitude glacial ski area on top of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, opens mid-November; moreover, you can ski there until the beginning of May. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular and well worth a visit, even if you do not ski. A combination of cogwheel train and cable car takes you to bottom of the slopes and then up to the very peak at 2,962 meters or 8,925 feet. Additionally, every year around the months of January and February, the Alpine Ski World Cup stops in Garmisch to host Photo by Andrea Griesser both men’s and women’s races. For non-skiers, there is a great choice of winter hikes, as well as the options to try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing.

Christmas traditions in Germany by Natalie Simmel USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Volunteer The holiday season is around the corner, and soon Christmas will follow. While there are many similarities between Christmas celebrations in the United States and Germany, there are some differences and special events that U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria community members should know while celebrating overseas.
Adventskranz In Germany, people use an Adventskranz, or advent wreath, with four candles on it to celebrate the four advents or the four Sundays before Christmas. On each of the four Sundays preceding Christmas Eve, a candle is lit. After lightning the first candle, the Christmas season officially begins.
Christmas Eve There are two major differences between Christmas celebrations in Germany versus America. First, the presents are not delivered by Santa Claus, but by the “Christkind” – the Christ Child Jesus. Since Germans celebrate his birthday that day, he brings presents and joy in return. And second, the opening of the presents and family festivities occurs on the evening of Dec. 24, and not on the morning of Dec. 25.

Christmas Markets As soon as Christmas time officially starts, Christmas markets begin as well. Depending on the size of the town, they can occur for a few days or last the entire month of December. They normally consist of food stands and booths that sell Christmas related goods. Each Christmas market has a “Krippe,” which is a display of Jesus’ birth in the stable in Bethlehem. While enjoying the Christmas market, people traditionally drink “Glühwein.”It is a traditional hot mulled Christmas wine that keeps visitors warm on cold winter days. Most of the time, there is a “Pfand,” or deposit, on the mugs to ensure they are returned to the vendors.

New Year’s Eve In Germany, New Year’s Eve is the only day people are allowed to light fireworks. On any other day, lighting fireworks is against the law and needs special authorization. During this special time of year, fireworks can often be purchased within supermarkets.

Adventskalender The advent calendar is long part of the German tradition to help children countdown the days until Christmas Eve. The calendar has 24 doors with little surprises inside and starts on Dec. 1. Each day, children open a calendar door until Christmas Eve arrives. Advent calendars are often theme-based, and nowadays the fun is not only restricted to children. Advents calendars are getting increasingly popular outside of Germany as well.
Saint Nikolaus Dec. 6 is a special day in Germany. Saint Nikolaus Day is dedicated to bishop Nikolaus from Myra, who helped women and children in 300 A.D. On the night of Dec. 5, German children traditionally place their boots in front of the door. Then Saint Nikolas visits the children with his companion Knecht Ruprecht, or servant Ruprecht – this character may also be represented by the Krampus. While Saint Nikolaus praises the good children with small gifts like oranges, walnuts and chocolates, Knecht Ruprecht originally punishes the naughty children. Now, Saint Nikolaus is more often seen alone, since he is the main attraction and punishing children is frowned upon. Saint Nikolaus can be found in Christmas markets or town centers, and each school normally has their own voluntary Saint Nikolaus actor.

Heilige drei Könige Jan. 6 is “Heilige drei Könige,” or Three Kings Day. On this day, the three holy kings — Casper, Melchior and Balthazar — walk around giving blessings to homes. Normally, children are dressed as the three holy kings and go door-to-door asking for a donation for the church. In return, the home will be blessed with chalk markings on the entrance. This day marks the end of the Christmas time. With these cultural tips, USAG Bavaria wishes you a happy holiday season as you experience this winter in Germany!

It is just as easy to be irritable and mean during the holidays as it is to be generous and sweet. Many families find themselves blissfully swimming in a sea of wrapping paper with gratitude one hour and the next screaming over who is hoarding the game system, causing a mess and not helping out enough. The holidays intensify our sense of connection to those we love. Yet they often are accompanied with temper tantrums, snarky comments and irritated arguments. Feelings of glad tidings and merriment can easily be overshadowed by recurring resentments or negative assumptions. Often, we react with frustration and anger rather than peace and joy. When the big day is finally here, research shows many families begin to argue around 10 a.m. A study of over 4,000 households found that arguing was one of the most experienced rituals of our holiday celebrations. The key triggers of conflict were: stressful pressure to cook the perfect holiday meal, arguments over what to watch on TV, and children creating chaos or messes. In addition, during larger family gatherings we are likely to encounter other people that regularly irritate us. Psychologist Leonard Felder reports in his research that three-quarters of society has at least one family member who annoys them. University of Louisville psychologist Michael Cunningham identified that “social allergens” run high during the holiday season. Social allergens are habits others have that get down to your last nerve. For example, relatives who always need to “one up you,” kids playing electronics at the dinner table, or a partner who forgot to buy a present as promised.

Here are the top five things you can do to prevent the Grinch from stealing your holiday joy: Clearly define three things that are most important to you and why. For example, perhaps setting up the tree is in your top three because the tree lights have a joyful, calming effect on the children and remind you of being a kid again. Write down these top three experiences in advance and share them with your family.
Give yourself permission to say “no.” If a task, event or experience is not part of you or your family members’ “top three things,” consider not doing it at all. The goal is to simplify and avoid overstimulation and exhaustion. This can help you feel more grateful for the amount of quality time together and to take less time for granted. Come up with clear expectations of who is responsible for certain chores on the big days of celebration. Specify when chores should be completed and reinforce a “team spirit.” For example, perhaps you have a 15-minute “family cleanup time” at 11 a.m. to reduce aggravation over one person doing it all. One idea is to have a Christmas-helper jar: Each family member draws two to three chores for the day with a time frame for completion (e.g., set the table by 2 p.m., help dad or mom in the kitchen between noon and 1 p.m., separate recyclables from 11 a.m. to noon, clear dishes and load the dishwasher after dinner and before evening electronics time).
Write love notes or words of appreciation throughout the season. Jot down kind words on a sticky note for one other person at least once a day and make them feel special. This habit will train your brain to notice the wonderful things about the season rather than what is annoying. Give up a sense of perfection and worrying over details. No one will remember what side dishes you served or what present they received five years from now. But they will remember how it felt to spend quality time with you. hile the seasons change and leaves start to fall, imagine medieval castles illuminated by Christmas lights and small stalls offering everything from traditional food, candy and drinks to handmade local tree decorations, candles and hand-crafted wooden toys like vintage merry-go-rounds. Germany is home to the ‘Christkindlmarkt,’ or Christmas market. These festive markets offer traditional delights for your senses. Aromas of gluehwein (spiced mulled wine), lebkuchen (gingerbread) and sausage fill the air as you wander through the cold mar-
kets, soaking up the festive atmosphere of Christmas again. You cannot find a better place to enjoy the season than a snowy winter in Germany! Make the journey to a Christmas market where you will find lovely wooden chalets and experience a down-to-earth holiday cheer. Some of these street markets date back to the late Middle Ages and can be found throughout Germany — both in big cities and small villages alike. U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria installations. It includes some of the largest, oldest and most beautiful markets in Germany, as well as Austria and the Czech Republic. The list also includes local markets in neighboring communities and some very unique markets, such as the one around Auerbach’s iron ore mine. Some of the markets held in castles or other special locations charge admission fees, but children often get discounts or free admission. If you are interested in smaller and local markets, pay attention to the dates. Some are open for a single day or weekend only. Most markets are open from noon until approximately 8 p.m. Some Christmas markets may have longer opening hours on weekends. Larger markets that run until Dec. 23 or 24 will usually close by noon on the last day.

WINTER DRIVING What to do when bad weather hits Bavaria Inclement weather brought on by the autumn and winter months can deliver a blow to Bavaria and the surrounding area, affecting your decision to travel. Garrison officials and street cleaning crews at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria installations at Garmisch, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck will do everything they can to keep services running. Snow and ice, however, may result in changes in road conditions, school closures, work delays or a temporary shutdown in some garrison services.
What to do Be in the know. Here’s how: • Register in Alert! today. Ensure you and your family receive Army Alert messages before bad weather hits. The system notifies users in several ways: as a popup on their workstation computer, an email to work and home addresses, a text message to their cell phone, and a voicemail to their work, home and cell phones. • Stay connected to home. army.mil/bavaria. In the left hand column there is a “Road Conditions” button. Click it to find out about school closures, road conditions and weather conditions. • Log on to the USAG Bavaria Facebook at facebook.com/ USAGBavaria for information pertaining to weather updates, delays, closures and driving conditions.
• Download the USAG Bavaria mobile app. Select your location and click Road Conditions & Closures. • If you are without Internet access, call the “Weather & Roads” hotline, at any time of the day. For current driving conditions in Grafenwoehr, Netzaberg and Vilseck, call DSN 475-ROAD (7623), CIV 09641-837623. In Hohenfels, call DSN 466-4001, CIV 09472-834001. And in Garmisch, dial DSN 440-3300, CIV 08821750-3300. • Tune into AFN Bavaria radio at 98.5 FM in Grafenwoehr, 107.7 FM in Vilseck, 89.9 FM in Amberg, 93.5 FM in Hohenfels or 90.3 FM in Garmisch. Or, listen online at AFN 360. Radio DJs provide updates on conditions in Bavaria. • If you are a Soldier and are still unsure, call your staff duty officer for further guidance.
Driving and Road Conditions: Understanding the difference When you get updates from garrison Facebook, AFN radio or the Weather & Roads hotline, you will encounter two terms: driving conditions and road conditions. The driving condition is an advisory to drivers of privately owned vehicles — in other words, an advisory to you as a Soldier, civilian or parent who is deciding about driving to work or school. Driving conditions levels are set as follows: Non-hazardous: Conditions allow for normal vehicle operation Hazardous: Drivers are likely to encounter snow, slush and patches of black ice. Caution is advised during vehicle operation. Dangerous: Drivers are likely to encounter snow, drifting snow, black ice and limited visibility. Extreme caution is advised during vehicle operation. Extremely dangerous: Drivers are likely to encounter snow, heavy drifting snow, extreme sheet ice, limited visibility and potential “white out” conditions. Only emergency travel should be conducted. Road conditions are set at green, amber, red and black. These levels only pertain to conditions for dispatching military tactical and non-tactical vehicles. All DOD sedans, station wagons, carryalls, vans, buses and public works vehicles are considered “non-tactical.” Contrary to popular belief, the driving and road conditions do not dictate whether you as a Soldier, civilian or student should come to work or school, though they are indicators that you should practice caution commensurate with the current condition.
Road conditions are determined for both on- and off-post. Conditions are set based on the most deteriorated spots on-post and within the surrounding communities. Military police patrols may deem amber conditions on General Patton, for example, but red in Schmidmuehlen or Hohenburg. Therefore, road conditions are red. If you have concerns but no installation-wide delay or closure has been announced, contact your staff duty officer or supervisor. Commanders and supervisors are empowered to decide whether individuals can delay reporting. The garrison shuttle will not run during red or black road conditions. The dining facilities remain open. How to prep your car for winter Winter is here. While the snow is fun and picturesque, it can also make for hazardous road conditions — especially if you have never driven in snow. Whether you are a winter-driving newbie or an old pro, here is a quick guide to winter road readiness. Vehicle Checklist • Ice Scraper and Brush • De-icing windshield spray. The night before an anticipated winter mix, spray the surfaces of your vehicle with a high quality product designed to prevent the formation of ice. Simple formulas involving a few household ingredients are also an option. • Snow shovel. While you are not expected to shovel the community road, but you may need to clear the area around your vehicle. • Sand and Tiegen-Eisfrei. When the temperature drops below freezing—as it often does overnight—a layer of ice forms over many ground surfaces. Apply sand to the sidewalks, steps and street around your house to prevent slips and vehicle skids. Road salt is strictly prohibited in Germany and the garrison. TiefenEisfrei, an environmentally friendly deicing product, is permitted and may be used to cover patches of ice. • Car battery charger. • Jump start cables.
Winter Tires European winter tires have two kinds of markings: a snowflake for snow tires or M+S for tires designed to work in mud and snow. All-season or all-weather tires may also have the markings and are acceptable for winter driving, but tires designed specifically for snow function better than all-weather tires. In November 2010, the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, passed a federal law that is much more specific about winter tires. This German federal law was amended in 2015 to require the use of winter tires when conditions are icy. As of January 2018, new winter tires must be marked with the Alpine-Symbol (a 3-peak mountain with a snowflake in the center). The law also apply to motorbikes, trucks and buses, regardless of whether the driver is the owner or is renting the vehicle. All of these vehicles must be equipped with winter tires if you drive in snow or icy conditions.
Before you go Clear your driveway and sidewalk Off-post residents in leased housing and private rentals are responsible for snow and ice removal in their driveways and on public sidewalks bordering their home from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Remove snow and ice from your vehicle German law requires that drivers remove as much snow and ice as possible, particularly from windows, mirrors and headlights. Make sure you have maximum visibility — no peephole driving — and that your vehicle does not present a hazard to other drivers.
Driving in snow
Winter tires must be marked with the 3-peak mountain and snowflake by Sept. 30, 2024. Tires marked only with M+S, which stands for mud and snow traction, may serve as your winter tire through Sept. 30, 2024. In some parts of Germany, particularly in the southern mountainous region, snow chains may be required if directed by road signs or police. USAG Bavaria Safety office and ADAC recommend carrying snow chains and checking your route prior to heading out. Know how to put snow chains on before you need them, and make sure you don’t exceed 50 kph when driving with them. Remember, if you don’t follow these requirements, you can receive a ticket of 80 euro or higher.
Drive slowly It is often difficult to determine where patches of ice develop or when a mix of slush will send your tires sideways. Operate vehicle functions smoothly, particularly during turns and braking, and gradually accelerate and decelerate. Give yourself a few extra minutes of travel time. Following distance Don’t tailgate. Increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Your car may require more than twice the amount of time and space than usual to perform unexpected stops or maneuvers. Avoid parking on poorly treated hills if possible While driving, use momentum gained before the incline, and apply slight pressure to the accelerator if necessary. Do not stop on a hill. Tire skidding Watch out for icy patches, especially on bridges, overpasses and heavily wooded areas. To prevent skidding, drive slowly and make gentle turns. If your vehicle skids, take your foot off the accelerator or brake and continue to steer in the desired direction.

Work and School Delays, Early Dismissals & Closures When a delay is announced at any of the USAG Bavaria communities, the garrison’s Department of Public Works needs time to clear roads and parking lots. Primary roads are cleared first, followed by secondary and tertiary roads. Garrison employees have up until two hours to report to their normally scheduled reporting time, but no later than 9 a.m. School buses will pick up children from their bus stops two hours after their normal pickup time. When inclement weather results in work delays or early closures, Child Development Centers and School-Age Centers are open to mission-essential personnel only. If an early closure is announced, nonmission essential personnel must pick up their children immediately. All other CYS facilities and programs will be closed in accordance with the garrison closure plan. During a work delay, expect garrison front-door services such as the fitness centers to open no earlier than 9 a.m. Appointments— such as those scheduled at the medical and dental clinics—may be postponed. Your responsibilities as a community member You are responsible for your own safety. The decision to drive to work or send your children to school is up to you. Weather conditions can vary drastically across Bavaria, as well as change at a moment’s notice.

Understanding how the Garrison responds to bad weather When conditions warrant, the garrison command team may direct delayed reporting, early release or garrison closure for schools and garrison employees. This decision is based on a combination of driving and weather conditions. The garrison command team’s decisions apply to all personnel, mission partners, directorates, agencies and DoDEA-Europe schools. The announcement of delayed reporting or garrison closure will be made as early as 4 a.m. The garrison’s Installation Operations Center (IOC) — which is staffed 24/7 — updates the weather website and weather hotline, and notifies AFN broadcasters, who then broadcast updates as early at 4:30 a.m. An Alert! message is sent to registered users. The garrison command team make every effort based on available data to announce an early release two hours prior to the forecasted degradation of road conditions. This allows for DoDEA school officials to stage school buses and prepare students and parents. The IOC will also contact mission partners in addition to updating the website, phone recordings and AFN.

USAG Bavaria honors community veterans by Julian Temblador USAG Bavaria Public Affairs The 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria honored all veterans, during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Tower Barracks 172nd Memorial site on Nov. 10. Before Nov. 11 was declared Veterans Day, it was called Armistice Day to signify the date that the Central Powers laid their weapons down during World War I. Sgt. Mitchell Makely, assistant operations NCO of 1-91 Cav, hosted the ceremony and cited the words of President Woodrow Wilson. “A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities, and gave to the world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and juster set of international relations.” Makely continued to cite President Wilson to explain what the day means. “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the

Sebastian Camacho, the guest speaker, said that this is the day we honor all the brave men and women who stepped forward to defend our nation throughout history. “Regardless of the military branch in which our veterans have served, this day belongs to them,” Camacho said. “Generations of
patriots have dedicated themselves to the defense of our country to make us stronger and more resilient as a nation.” Also in attendance were members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Tower Post 10692, including James Joyce, the Department Commander of Europe District for the VFW. “It’s a chance for us to recognize all veterans, past and present,” said Joyce. “A lot of times, the general public doesn’t realize that active duty service members
are veterans too. This is an opportunity for us to recognize them.” At the end of the ceremony, Camacho and VFW members laid wreaths as a way to pay respects to veterans who had lost their lives in defense of the nation. “While Memorial Day is a time to remember those who
