Tulbagh, named after Cape governor Ryk Tulbagh, is a town located in a mountain basin, the “Land van Waveren”. The town is almost completely surrounded by majestic mountain ranges - the Obiqua Mountains to the west, the towering Winterhoek on the northern end and the Witzenberg on the eastern side. The Great Winterhoek Mountains tower 2077m above sea level and are picturesquely snow-capped in winter. The race starts at Saronsberg wine estate, a contemporary addition to the rich heritage of Tulbagh valley. Formed in late 2002 when Waveren and Welgegund - two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen – were purchased and combined. Heading towards town, the routes flow clock-wise along the foot of the mountains crossing the Klein Berg River and many of its tributaries. Many famous wineries are seen from the route while traversing the basin where many of the footpaths and animal paths were used by the indigenous Bushmen and Khoi peoples thousands of years ago.

Notice to all participants Although the organizers endeavour to remove dangerous rocks and cut as much of the long grass and overhanging bushes, trees, thorns and vegetation as possible before the event, weather conditions sometimes result in certain unforeseen obstacles on the route. The Tulbagh leg of the MTN National MTB Series driven by Nissan is owned by ADVENDURANCE. The event was first started in 2011 with 500, mostly Cape mountain bikers including the cream of the best mountain bikers in South Africa. Tulbagh is the youngest of the events in the National MTB Series, a great historical venue and picturesque setting in the heart of the Cape surrounded by some of the best mountain bike trails in the world. The race and route was inspired by the Cape Epic and with the help of Pieter van Wyk who has played a vital role in building many of the mountain bike trails that this area is quickly becoming famous for. The event supports local business and the local community. NISSAN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Half-Marathon This route has some stunning views of the three mountain ranges that surround Tulbagh and the famous wine farms around town. The 2014 route circles the town before heading to the major climb of the day. The route moves in a clock-wise direction that has been fine-tuned in 2013 flowing a lot better and will remain the same for 2014. With some stunning views if you take time out to stop, take in the surroundings and perhaps a photo or two. For the “Race Snakes” the route will present itself with enough challenging sections to test technical skills, while the substantial climbs, and fast, sketchy down hills will test both fitness and courage. MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Marathon For 2014 the route is clock-wise starting off with a long drag towards the Witzenberg, the first set of the mountains on the eastern border of Tulbagh. This climb is close on 15km long and although not ascending a great deal (just over 300m) it will definitely wake you up with what’s to come. It’s a challenging and exciting route with a lot of variables in terrain, surfaces and some tranquil views of the town and vineyards below. The race really gets exciting around the 45km mark where you will experience some undulating contour climbing with rewarding downhill single track sections in between until you reach the peak at the around the 60km mark (also King of the Mountains). MTN NATIONAL MTB SERIES Ultra Apart from two small difficult loops, the Ultra will follow the same route as the Marathon until about the 63km mark but this is where all similarity ends. The route takes the riders back up to the top of the mountain twice! The route takes the riders back up to top of the mountain twice! The technicality of this route is harder than the marathon, with a good deal of single track riding, with steeper ascents and descents.
