Ballito is situated roughly 40 kilometres north of Durban. It forms part of the KwaDukuza local Municipality, and iLembe District Municipality. Dolphins are common on this stretch of the North Coast shoreline, hence the nickname Dolphin Coast. The town was established in 1954 as a private township, by the Glen Anil Development Corporation/Investments which was headed up by Dr Edward (Eddie) Rubenstein (1903– 1972). The word “Ballito” translated from Spanish means “little ball”. The town’s name was borrowed from a glossy advert for Ballito hosiery made by Ballito Hosiery Limited of St. Albans, England The area was originally a portion of a sugar cane farm at Compensation Beach owned by Basil Townsend.

Holla Mountain Bike Trails launched on 1 March 2009. Holla Trails are a system of marked mountain biking trails among the farms in the Ballito area. Only riders with a Holla permit are allowed access to the farmlands in the Ballito, Compensation and Upper Tongaat area, those without permits are trespassing and risk prosecution. This arrangement was carefully negotiated with private landowners in the region who were becoming increasingly concerned about the uncontrolled growth of mountain biking in the area.

The Ballito leg of the Ashburton Investments National MTB Series is owned by ADVENDURANCE. Holla Trails consists of over 340kms of marked and signed trails and is continually being improved and added to! There are trails for both novice and experienced mountain bikers alike. Riders are amazed at the variety of track and spectacular scenery that is available. There is plenty of track for the newer riders and it will finally give many people who want to get into mountain biking the chance to get out without getting lost and risking trespassing. The sport of mountain biking has been given a huge boost by becoming more accessible to aspirant riders. The Sugar Rush Park is a great venue where riders are able to park their cars in a secure environment, and shower after their ride before enjoying drinks and a light meal on weekends. The emphasis at the trail head is to create an environment that reintroduces kids and families to the outdoor activities of the days of old. You won’t find any computer games or cartoon networks here. It’s all about getting outside to play. Thanks to all the 20+ land owners through which the route traverses; without your co-operation this event would not be possible. Ultra Marathon Year Men

Route and features 13.
NATIONALMTBSERIES.COM
Half-Marathon The half-marathon goes out in a north westerly direction and moves clock-wise taking you on mostly the yellow route of Holla trails but with a couple differences. A new course record is sure to be set in place for this route. The route flows in a clock direction and features a fair amount of climbing with 30% single / jeep track. Marathon The marathon route extends on the 42km route by another 36km. Few riders have ventured this far. The marathon heads directly inland towards the escarpment. This is where the climbing starts as riders make their way to the Rainfarm game lodge and beyond. Riders can expect gravel roads and jeep track with periodic singletrack sections through indigenous forests, making their way up toward Glendale Heights. What awaits you cannot be put into words, you’ll have to come see for yourself. You’ll be climbing up on single track along the river, before hitting a long 11km climb to what will feel like the top of the escarpment with stunning views over the whole of Ballito. The queen of the mountains will be at 33km. With the tech zone at 36km just before returning down. The route features 25-30% single track and is very well balanced to test all of your abilities. Ultra Marathon The ultra route does the exact same marathon loop till just before the venue. Here the second tech zone will be the mark of a second much shorter loop of only 24km.

This 24km route will feel like a long cross country lap with a singletrack climb along the river followed by a long climb before descending towards the venue there will a short climb just before the finish. The ultra is not for the faint hearted and although only 102km it will be the ultimate tester for any endurance athlete.

Are you part of SAS? SASeeding (SAS) is an exciting race administration system aimed at improving the standard of cycling events. Upon registering with SAS each cyclist receives a permanent and unique SAS number; which also doubles as a race number and timing chip. SAS gathers race results from various race organisers and uses these to create a race index. This enables SAS to divide large numbers into smaller batches in accordance with a riders ability which effectively eliminates congestion. Riders are provided with a more enjoyable and safer riding experience. SAS recently started the first MTB ranking system in conjunction with KIA, so riders can now view their national ranking on www.kiarankings.co.za
