It is with great joy that we present this brochure to showcase our expeditions, treks, climbing schools, polar journeys and exciting adventures. An expedition is an experience of a lifetime that includes adversity commensurate to reward. By partaking in the process of committing ourselves completely to the objective, we define ourselves through expeditions as a reflection of how we respond to the challenges we face in life. If we do that right, we are stronger and better prepared to contribute to the world we inhabit and to those with whom we share it. Being at the forefront of high-level adventure for as long as we have is primarily due to our unrelenting passion for what we do and because we are still unashamedly captivated by the magical environments that we have the privilege to share with others. The selections of adventures we offer are the result of an evolution of refinement over thousands of adventures and expeditions that have been crafted and improved upon over time. Our underlying philosophy has always been to plan and prepare meticulously because expeditions are activities where one must be ready for the unexpected as it is this `not-knowing-the-outcome-at-the-outset’ that defines adventure. Adventure Consultants expeditions and journeys regularly feature the return of many of our past expedition teammates so each trip is sometimes more like a reunion than a first-time meeting. We relish these opportunities to re-group and participate in further adventures together as much as we do in welcoming new members to our teams. The Adventure Consultants administration and guiding staff are consummate professionals who strive to provide you with expeditions and adventures that are exceptional in every way. Our expeditions are operated by employing intelligent tactics and applying the appropriate level of comfort to encourage success while still maintaining authenticity. Please enjoy this brochure on behalf of the Adventure Consultants family and we look forward to welcoming you onto one of our adventures soon.

developed a grading system that quantifies the technical nature and physical output level of each trip.
Terrain guidelines and technical requirements 1 - Scrambling on low-angled terrain of a low technical nature, on snow or rock. Ropes may occasionally be used. Climbers do not need previous experience but do need the ability to move over rough ground. 2 - Short steep sections that will require a rope. Basic snow/ice/rock climbing. We recommend that climbers are familiar with ice axe and crampon techniques and/or basic rock climbing techniques although this can often be taught during the trip. 3 - Steep terrain that requires moderate level
climbing skills on snow/ice/rock. Emphasis on good cramponing skills. Will need experience with rope techniques including rappelling/abseiling and snow camping techniques.

5 - Extreme terrain. Climber will have extensive experience on rock or ice and a complete understanding of anchors and protection techniques and a high degree of comfort following longer difficult sections of ice and/or rock in alpine gear with a pack.
7 SUMMITS
B - Defined as one who exercises regularly although not necessarily to a really high level, capable of carrying a pack weighing 18kg/40lb for several hours. Regular cardiovascular exercise (3-4 times a week, gym/bike/stairs) and include pack-carrying on rough ground once a week. C - A high standard of fitness. Capable of climbing with a heavy pack (25kg/55lb) for extended periods in mountain conditions. High level of training specific to climbing that would include heavy pack-carrying over rough terrain and other preparation such as regular gym/pool/bike training. D - Excellent level of fitness from participants
who would have an ongoing commitment to training and maintaining fitness specific to climbing. Expect long days in extreme conditions. Preparation would include heavy pack-carrying, specific conditioning through rock and/or ice climbing and habitual cardiovascular exercise.

“Good guides understand that part of the payoff is the opportunity to help create one of life’s most powerful experiences for someone they’ve just met. I salute the Guides of Adventure Consultants, who do just that every time they lead an expedition.” Dave, financial planner from America

OUR GUIDES The friendly and companionable guides who make up the Adventure Consultants team are recognised as some of the most skilled and experienced mountaineers in the world. In addition to each of them having an extensive climbing background, our guides are qualified under the auspices of the highest qualifying body in mountain guiding; the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA / UIAGM). The AC guides have individually taken their professions to the highest of levels, yet relish the opportunity to share the environment they are so passionate about and communicate this in an atmosphere of confidence and enjoyment. If there are any specific traits we encourage in our guiding staff, it is compatibility coupled with effective leadership. We know that good leadership translates into successful and safe experiences in the outdoor environment. Leadership to us means being able to bring a group together for a common goal, with positive coaching and encouragement being highlights of the trip. These are the key aspects that set us apart and that enable us to consistently operate great adventures and expeditions. We are recognised as being amongst the best in the business, an accolade we continue to aspire to that provides our motivation for continual reflection and improvement. Whether you are considering your first foray into the mountain environment, or are returning for an intense expedition at the higher end of the scale, our guides do their very best to ensure you have an amazing time and achieve success! 5
Adventure Consultants guides are members of the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association (NZMGA) or the British Mountain Guides Association (BMG), and the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA / UIAGM). We believe that you should always insist on internationally qualified guides as you would insist on the qualifications of any person in whom you invest so much responsibility.
ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATIONS TEAM Running successful journeys and expeditions is more about experience, knowledge and strategic management than any other factors. As an organisation, we place a substantial amount of time and resources into ensuring our trips are well planned and supported. new zealand ascents ADVENTURE CONSULTANTS NEW ZEALAND The Southern Alps of New Zealand are wild and pristine with varied and diverse climbing challenges - sufficient to provide any climber with countless years of worthy objectives. Adventure Consultants is based in the small alpine town of Wanaka, nestled beneath these rugged mountains. We have close access to many different mountain areas that enable us to optimise the climbing opportunities around the weather systems and conditions.
The Linda Glacier on Aoraki/Mt Cook. Photo Ian Brown/Hedgehoghouse
The mountain environment here is often demanding. We are faced with challenging weather conditions, heavily glaciated mountains and steep alpine faces. Yet it is from this setting that great climbers are forged and where our internationally recognised guiding operation has its roots. At Adventure Consultants we relish these mountains and this is reflected in the innovative and passionate way that we operate our personalised climbing and instructional programmes.
Aoraki / Mt Cook

• Technically challenging ascent on ice, snow and rock • Long and varied climb on New Zealand’s highest mountain
Approaching the summit rocks on Aoraki/Mt Cook. Photo Mark Watson/Highluxphoto
The highest peak in New Zealand, Aoraki/Mt Cook is a popular objective and we ascend via the classic Linda Glacier route. The climbing is strenuous and of moderate technical difficulty; the summit is one of the most satisfying and exhilarating in Australasia. Aoraki is truly Himalayan in size, protruding 3,000m from the valley floor. We fly into Plateau Hut, and base ourselves here for our summit attempt. The climb takes 16 to 22 hours and to get the best of the conditions we schedule our departure for around midnight. We follow the Linda Glacier which steepens to moderately challenging ice-climbing, followed by a couple of pitches of steeper rock and mixed climbing through the summit rocks. The angle then eases a little as we focus on the summit ice cap for the final push to the highest point in New Zealand! When weather and time permit we may elect to climb over two days, with a bivouac halfway up the route to give ourselves a good start for the following morning and time to soak up the high-alpine ambience. Dates: November to April Departure: ex Wanaka, New Zealand Price: NZ$6,300
Duration: 6 days Ratio: 1:1 only
Please contact us for ascents of other routes on Aoraki/Mt Cook
Mt Aspiring / Tititea 9,951ft / 3,033m • Most aesthetic mountain in the Southern Alps • Variety of quality routes to climb, from moderate to hard Mt Aspiring was named Tititea (‘Glittering Peak’) by the New Zealand Maori and is often referred to as the ‘Matterhorn of the South’. This beautiful mountain offers various routes of high quality, from the grand but attainable North West Ridge, to the divine arête of the South West Ridge. We ascend the North West Ridge either via the ‘Ramp’ or alternatively by the full North West Ridge.
Mt Aspiring from Colin Todd hut. Photo Andy Cole
Climbing the Ramp involves moderate-angled snow climbing that requires the use of two ice tools on the steeper sections. The route meets the North West Ridge about halfway up and is technically straightforward climbing for the last 300m to the summit. Great views abound as we look into the deep and glaciated valleys to the west and beyond to the Tasman Sea. The full North West Ridge is a classic route that we generally climb later in the season once it is free of snow. This route follows the long North West Ridge requiring exciting traverses around rock towers with fabulous exposure! The more demanding South West Ridge is a climb to suit those with previous snow and ice experience. The route ascends a gradually steepening arête culminating in several steep ice pitches to the summit. It is one of New Zealand’s premier alpine routes.

Mt Tasman / Horo Koau 11,476ft / 3,498m • Classic ascent of long snow and ice route • New Zealand’s second highest mountain Mt Tasman is considered by many to be the most beautiful peak within the Mt Cook region and the ascent has the technical character to make it truly memorable. The routes are predominantly snow and ice with classic ridges and steep alpine faces. New Zealand’s second highest peak, it is a major ascent and with its proximity to Aoraki/Mt Cook the views are unforgettable! Bivouacs are often required to complete an ascent of this mountain. The usual route is via the North Shoulder, which requires an initial ascent of Mt Lendenfeld, followed by a traverse of Engineer Col, before climbing the steep and exposed North Shoulder, then traversing the airy ridge from here to the summit. A big day out on the mountaineer’s mountain! Dates: November to February Departure: ex Wanaka, New Zealand

The sharp soaring peak appears like a standing wave over the pristine waters of Milford Sound and we climb a route that follows the skyline ridge that is never hard, but it is exposed, from the deep blue waters of the fiords to the summit itself. Prior to making the ascent of Mitre Peak, we warm up on some of the excellent alpine rock routes in the Darran mountains of Fiordland before we snatch a fine day for the ascent of this stunning mountain. The climb is long and involved, most of the time on rock, with some snow sections too. Climbers must be competent on long alpine rock routes to be able to seriously attempt the climb, but for the initiated, achieving the ascent will be the real highlight of a climbing trip in the Alps. Alpamayo 19,412ft / 5,917m • Climb one of the world’s most beautiful mountain faces • Immerse yourself in the local culture and people • Moderate-altitude mountaineering on technical ground This mountain is often referred to as the most beautiful mountain in the world with its classic fluted snow slopes descending like fingers from the summit. We ascend via Alpamayo’s Ferarri Route, or the Italian Route, depending on conditions. The ascent involves moderately steep snow and ice climbing to 70 degrees and expedition members will require a background on this type of terrain prior to joining the trip. We acclimatise on an ascent of 5,686m Vallunaraju before moving to Alpamayo for the ultimate ascent. A technical climbing day takes us to a high camp from where we embark on the steep ice-face to the summit. We stay in local hotels for initial acclimatisation days, later moving to comfortable Base Camps that are well-catered. Apart from high mountain camp moves, the load-carrying is provided by porters and donkeys. This is a great high-altitude technical adventure! “AC was great, mostly for pre-trip communication, knowledge of the guides and the total experience.”
• Second highest peak in South America • Highest active volcano in the world Straddling the borders of Chile and Argentina, Ojos del Salado is Chile’s highest mountain and Argentina’s second highest, after Aconcagua. ‘Ojo’ can boast that it is the highest active volcano in the world and the second highest mountain in the western hemisphere. It is an (almost) non-technical peak skirting the edge of the Atacama Desert and is therefore dry and barren. Highlights of this trip include Laguna Santa Rosa, where we delight in watching the Andean Flamingos which nest on the lagoon year round, and the turquoise waters of Laguna Verde with its hot springs which ease tired legs during our rest day there.

Ecuador is a country of exquisite scenery, friendly people and outstanding mountains. Those of you who are relatively new to mountaineering, or experiencing altitude for the first time, will thoroughly enjoy this programme. Our qualified guides introduce you to international-standard climbing techniques through our glacier school, and you climb three splendid volcanic peaks including Ecuador’s highest, Mt Chimborazo. We begin by climbing the trekking peaks Pasochoa and Rucu Pichincha near Quito. These completed, we ascend Cayambe where we practice our climbing skills before moving onto Cotopaxi. Chimborazo is the third summit that we climb on both névé and hard glacial ice. When travelling between our mountain destinations we stay in restored haciendas, some dating back to the early 1800s, which are now well-appointed resort hotels. On rest days we can visit the majestic and wild ecological zone of the ‘cloud forest’ and revel in the region’s amazing biological diversity. Dates: Duration:

“When I decided four years ago to complete the Seven Summits, I wanted to try a different guide company for all of my climbs until I found one that I was comfortable with, had the experience on all the summits and met all my expectations. After using three other companies, I am now in the process of planning my third climb with Adventure Consultants. Stephen, financial advisor from Canada

“Maximisation of chance to get to the top would be the main reason I would recommend Adventure Consultants. Small group numbers, the max oxygen option and flexibility. Detailed dispatches were greatly appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and never once felt fear or apprehension. Looking forward to climbing with AC again.” Paul, 40 year old from Australia
The Adventure Consultants methodology and tactical approach to climbing Mt Everest has seen us achieve the highest success rates and our extensive experience gives us the edge when it comes to the big decisions. We provide a consistently higher Sherpa and Guide ratio than any other operator, resulting in more support and backup for your summit attempt and therefore a greater safety margin and chance of success. We are constantly developing and evolving our operational systems to ensure you participate in the best expedition available. We figure our expedition members do not deserve anything less! In the interests of giving you the most optimal chance to summit, we limit our team size to ensure the group summits on the best weather day; sometimes there is only one summit day! Large teams offering cheap climbs often miss out as they split their groups over several potential summit days. Our guides are seasoned professionals who are trained and assessed through the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) resulting in a greater repertoire of skills that enables them to provide a dedicated level of security to you during the expedition. The guide’s contribution is predominantly around making decisions to keep you safe and healthy and to avoid mishap. This is based on years of first-hand experience on the mountain and is in contrast to startup operators looking to learn the ropes at your expense or locally-led groups which are wanting of preventative strategies and back-up contingency in case of mishap. For well over two decades we have been at the forefront of providing the most current communications systems for our expeditions. These deliver comprehensive weather forecasts which enable us to plan our ascent around favourable weather. Additional meteorological interpretation provided by veteran Everest guides through our head office in New Zealand helps manage the decision making process. Our Wi-Fi data connection allows you to keep in touch with sponsors, business,

Aconcagua 22,841ft / 6,962m • Most scenic route on the mountain, away from the ‘trade route’ • Ideal preparation for Himalayan high-altitude climbing • Realistic proven timeframe for the ascent and acclimatisation through better leadership and logistics
Aconcagua is the highest peak outside of the Himalaya and highest in South America. It is located in Western Argentina in the heart of the Central Andes. While it is a very physical climb, it is one of the more achievable Seven Summits. An ascent of this eminent Andean Peak is a perfect choice for those wishing to experience high-altitude expedition mountaineering and is often undertaken as a preparation climb for the big mountains in the Himalaya. The lessons gained about how you perform and the skills taught by the guides will establish robust guidelines for any future aspirations you have at high altitude.

Adventure Consultants offers high-quality expeditions to Aconcagua and we achieve a superior success rate due to our logistical approach and our understanding of acclimatisation techniques for climbing at high altitude. We have factored in the ideal number of days for the trip to encourage adequate acclimatisation and a realistic timeframe to achieve summit success. Our guides are seasoned veterans who are focused on encouraging you to achieve the maximum satisfaction and learning from this ascent. We climb Aconcagua via the 360 traverse route as it is less visited and features the best camp sites. By traversing Aconcagua you will also get to see both sides of the mountain and complete a circular journey. Dates: Price:

The highest mountain on the North American continent, it is one of the much sought after Seven Summits. The expedition follows the West Buttress Route which is technically straightforward but also considered a true ‘expedition’ ascent and a demanding climb. Adventure Consultants operates this expedition in conjunction with our North American partners, the American Alpine Institute and Mountain Trip, who are approved Denali National Park concessionaires with extensive guiding experience on Denali. We fly from Talkeetna to Base Camp on the southeast fork of the Kahiltna Glacier at 7,000ft/2,134m. From there we commence the climb of the West Buttress moving through increasingly higher camps until we are in a position to ascend to the summit. An ascent of Denali is a physically challenging, yet incredibly rewarding experience.

Elbrus 18,510ft / 5,642m • Get a taste of high-mountain adventure on one of the Seven Summits • Experience moderate-altitude mountaineering on non-technical ground Elbrus is a giant dormant volcano that separates Europe from Asia. It has become one of the coveted Seven Summits as it is the highest peak in Europe. We begin the expedition either in the cultural centres of St Petersburg or Moscow, or in the Caucasus spa town of Mineralnye Vody. We then travel deep into the Elbrus region where we hike the local hills to aid our acclimatisation. Being relatively high, Elbrus certainly demands respect and we approach this by climbing to higher elevations each day during our acclimatisation phase whilst sleeping at lower elevations at night. A cable car takes us up to our accommodation at the base of the climb, at a new modern hut, where we can learn basic snow and ice techniques from the guides prior to the ascent. The summit day entails climbing long snow slopes with views over the wooded valleys to the surrounding peaks. As with any foray to high altitude, it is imperative that expedition members are fit and in good health. Elbrus is an appropriate objective as your first or second of the Seven Summits.

Elbrus Ski This scintillating adventure in the Russian Caucasus mountains features a climb to the summit of Elbrus to target the ski descent from one of the Seven Summits. We initially enjoy ski touring in the tree clad valleys and glades around the Elbrus massif while acclimatising for the project ahead. We base ourselves from lodges and hotels as we ski-high, sleep-low a few days as we discover new terrain and ski tours. We then launch to the high lodges on the slopes of Elbrus and from there we tour progressively higher for a couple of days prior to making the ski ascent and descent from the summit of Elbrus. Once the mission is completed, we return to the hotel in the valley floor for celebrations before transferring back to Mineralnye Vody for our home-bound flights. Carstensz Pyramid 16,023ft / 4,884m • Equatorial mountaineering adventure • Exhilarating rock climbing • A remote and exotic Seven Summits peak Possibly the most exotic mountaineering location on earth, Carstensz Pyramid in Western Papua is a large limestone escarpment jutting out of the rainforest. Coveted as the highest peak in Australasia, Carstensz is one of the most remote of the Seven Summits. The mountain was first climbed in the 1960s on an expedition led by Heinrich Harrer of Eiger North Wall fame, yet has received few ascents due to factors such as intricate permit requirements and local unrest. We have been operating expeditions to Carstensz Pyramid since 1990, climbing the North Face in a long day from Base Camp. The ascent involves a combination of scrambling and climbing using fixed ropes on rock and we recommend climbers have recent rock climbing and fixed rope training prior to the trip. Located in wild jungles where local tribes live much as they have for thousands of years, Carstensz Pyramid is one the most exotic peaks on the planet. Access into and out of the region is via helicopter straight to Base Camp, a dramatic journey that keeps the timeframe achievable for a Seven Summits peak.

Mount Vinson 16,050ft / 4,892m • Climb with the pioneers of Vinson guided ascents • The most pristine and remote of the Seven Summits • Experience the unbelievable vastness of the Antarctic interior • South Pole Ski the Last Degree and first ascent options available Antarctica’s highest mountain, Mount Vinson, lies within the Ellsworth Mountains, 700 nautical miles from the South Pole. Adventure Consultants pioneered guided ascents of Mount Vinson in 1990 and has been operating successful trips to the mountain ever since. Because of our longstanding background of mountaineering in the Antarctic we have a well-established ascent methodology and a flawless ascent record. An attempt on Mount Vinson requires involved logistics due to the extreme nature of the weather and conditions in Antarctica. We begin the adventure in Punta Arenas at the southern point of Chile. Here we board a polar-capable aircraft and fly to a blue-ice runway and tent camp at Union Glacier on the Antarctic continent. As weather allows, we move by Twin Otter aircraft to the Base Camp on Mount Vinson and begin the ascent, which is usually completed over five or six days. The climbing on the mountain is not technically difficult but the venue is incredibly remote and conditions often extreme. Good pack-fitness is essential as all members must share the load-carrying of the expedition supplies and equipment. As with all our expeditions we adhere to a strict environmental code and these efforts are rigidly reinforced in Antarctica. Expedition members often comment on how this ascent fulfils the desire to experience the breathtaking majesty of the Antarctic interior. The highest point in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is perhaps one of the best known mountains of the world. It is the easiest of the Seven Summits and definitely the most romantic! Kilimanjaro is like an island, standing tall and sentinel surrounded by the hot, dry plains of Tanzania. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. We climb via the picturesque Shira-Barafu Route which allows spectacular views of the peak and the surrounding countryside. We ascend through the tree line into a wild volcanic moorland landscape with the high summit dome overhead. Each night is spent in tents that are set up by our local staff, enjoying wholesome meals served in our dining tent. We depart the top camp for the summit soon after midnight to allow us time to reach the peak before the afternoon clouds roll in. The route follows rocky trails to the crater rim where we are rewarded with views of the remnant glaciers. It’s not too far from here to the summit itself where you can relish the views from the highest point in Africa! This expedition features a smorgasbord of African culture and scenery, providing a fabulous excuse to visit this wild continent. Lhotse 27,939ft / 8,516m • Climb the world’s fourth highest mountain • Or, combine an ascent of Everest with Lhotse The fourth highest mountain in the world, Lhotse is an exhilarating climb that follows the Everest climbing route as far as Camp Three. A narrow gully splits the upper North West Face making for an exciting and interesting finale to the climb. The expedition benefits from the infrastructure we have for our Everest expedition and is therefore well resourced and supported. From Base Camp we ascend the famous Khumbu icefall and enter the Western Cwm that we follow to Camp Two, surrounded by the towering flanks of Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest’s South West Face. The route steepens as we climb the icy Lhotse Face to Camp Three then on through the Yellow Band to Camp Four at the base of the summit gully. 2,000ft / 600m of climbing up the icy gully follows, sometimes with rocky sections that keep you on your toes, making this a challenging ascent. You have the option of joining the expedition specifically to climb Lhotse, or as a combo climb, making the ascent directly after your Everest summit from South Col. Cho Oyu 26,863ft / 8,188m • Climb with the most experienced expedition operator on the mountain • Experience high-altitude climbing on the world’s sixth highest peak and prepare yourself for Everest • Visit the vibrant cities of Kathmandu and Lhasa Cho Oyu is the world’s sixth highest mountain and considered to be the easiest of the fourteen 8,000m peaks. Many of our expedition members use the experience gained here as a ‘stepping stone’ to Everest - or climb it as their ‘once only’ 8,000m goal. Our itinerary has been tailored to include a visit to the city of Lhasa, the heart of Tibetan culture. Here we explore the Potala Palace and other cultural sites while acclimatising for the journey ahead. We then travel overland to the base of the mountain followed by a short walk to Base Camp. The climbing route links features devoid of undue hazard with only a few short technical sections, yet the ascent path is direct, allowing climbers to gain altitude without covering a lot of distance. As with all ascents at high altitude, the climbing is strenuous and requires a high standard of fitness, but as a peak to experience the thin air at 8,000m for the first time, Cho Oyu is ideal. Dhaulagiri delivers a big burly adventure for those with prior experience on the high peaks. Even the approach hike through sublime green farm, forest and sub-alpine takes us back to a time where empty trails through rugged terrain was the norm. North Pole - Ski the Last Degree • Travel over the sea ice to the top of the world • Immerse yourself in extreme wilderness High intensity journey by ski over the Last Degree to the North Pole. Initially, we partake in a training programme to introduce all the skills you will need to prepare you for the journey ahead. We then fly by light aircraft to the ice at 89º North and the start of the trek. The challenge of the journey comes from the ever-changing sea ice that moves constantly, making for challenging navigation and physical travel days. The daily journey takes seven to ten hours with the expectation that we will arrive at the North Pole on around day ten of this two week expedition to the very top of our precious world. Challenges aside, an expedition to the top of the world is an amazing experience. North Pole - All The Way • Polar travel in the steps of the early explorers • Incredible experience in the wildest frontier The North Pole is the ‘test piece’ of polar expeditions and a serious undertaking. Surrounded by sea ice and in total darkness for half the year, the North Pole is attainable only during a short ‘window’ of time. If too early, darkness and extremely cold temperatures prevail. If too late, the frozen Arctic Ocean melts into drifting pack ice enshrouded by water. The expedition will travel and live on the polar pack ice. Each day will be an adventure as we navigate over pressure ridges, search for routes around open leads of water, and set camp on multi-year pans of ice. Expedition members will be required to tow a laden sled and be an active contributor to camp setting and cooking procedures making for a very physical adventure. We all owe it to ourselves to express our true spirit of adventure, now you can achieve it on this amazing journey!

• A high-octane trip where we ascend the three tallest peaks in Greenland We initiate the journey in Iceland to fly by ski plane directly onto the glacier below Mt Gunnbjörn in the Watkins mountains on Greenland’s east coast in the Arctic wonderland. Each of the climbs involves big days of skinning up to where the peaks steepen. Here we transition to crampons, climbing roped the last few hours to the summit for startling Arctic panoramas over massive glaciers and craggy peaks. Once back at the skis you get to enjoy turns on the long cruise down-glacier back to camp. We’re that far north there is no need to worry about being caught out by sunset! After we’ve climbed Mt Gunnbjörn we pack up and move camp on our sleds closer to the Island’s 2nd and 3rd highest peaks, Mounts Cone and Dome, which we climb over the following two days. After two weeks on this journey the ski plane returns to whisk us back across the Denmark Strait to Iceland. Dates: May 13 - 25, 2020 Departure: ex Reykjavik, Iceland

Antarctic Peninsula Yacht Based Expeditions • The last frontier, true adventure, vast wilderness, abundant wildlife • Climb and ski from comfortable sailboat accommodation
Bespoke group and family adventures are our specialty. Photo Guy Cotter
The vast and remote Antarctic environment is rich in amazing wildlife and untouched mountain landscapes. We access the pristine mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula on a specialist Antarctic yacht in a small group of up to seven members. Due to the size of the vessel we have exclusive access to remote anchorages that are off-limits to larger ships, allowing us an unlimited degree of flexibility. Each day we head to shore to climb and ski or merely observe the wildlife. A multitude of peaks exist in the region, many of which are unclimbed and all of which have new route potential from the easy to the extreme! In stable weather multi-day trips are possible into more remote areas. You can choose to climb mountains, ski from high coastal peaks and/or tour around the region with your guide. Every day you mingle with the wildlife at close quarters from the boat and on land. Whales, seals and penguins are abundant and we are all drawn to spend many hours observing and photographing these incredible creatures. This journey is available to adventurers of all levels who have a desire to immerse themselves in the real wilderness on this yacht-based expedition. Become one of the adventurous few who get to experience the abundant wonders of the Antarctic Peninsula.

other services and policies Environment As people who live very close to the natural world we are genuinely proactive in minimising our impacts by educating our staff and guests in appropriate techniques to preserve the environment. With our roots in the New Zealand outdoors we have always been conscious of the need to ‘leave only footprints’ and we apply this philosophy to every venture we embark upon. Be it a weekend in the hills or a major expedition, we are particular about leaving the area cleaner than we found it. Adventure Consultants was the first expedition company to operate clean-up expeditions to Mt Everest and we were removing abandoned oxygen bottles from Mt Everest before well-funded ‘clean-up expeditions’ became fashionable. Our efforts are ongoing with ‘treading lightly’ on our expeditions and in our operation overall and we continually strive to improve our waste minimisation and recycling to achieve best practice both at home and abroad. In addition to our pre-existing high standards, we practice ‘Leave No Trace’™ principles as a Registered Guide/Outfitter with ‘Leave No Trace’™ to minimise our environmental footprint.
Social responsibility It cannot be refuted that our travels have an indelible impact on people whose lands we visit. Yet much can be gained from the sharing of values and ideas if we are respectful in our interactions, especially if we abstain from the western tendency of imposing our own values onto our hosts.

The majority of adventure operators will increase profits and reduce your trip costs by having large groups - yet Adventure Consultants journeys are conducted in small groups to encourage a more personalised and less intrusive approach.
“Highly recommended. The Dhaulagiri expedition was well organised, well-resourced and led by a highly experienced, motivated and competent team of guides supported by Sherpa. The environment on the mountain is high risk and thus paying for this level of support is key to a safe and successful trip. This was the reason that I chose AC for my first 8000m expedition and I consider this to have been an excellent decision.”
The well-being of our staff is important to us, especially those in impoverished regions where porters are often exploited by agencies wanting to offer you a lower price point. We believe in, and support, porter protection initiatives that are an integral component of our standard doctrine towards local staffing. Adventure Consultants is a Visionary Society Member of the dZi Foundation. We care about the well-being of the local people and their communities in the regions we visit and we know you do too. A portion of your trip fee is donated to support the efforts of the dZi Foundation whose ‘Revitalise a Village’ programmes provide help and localised empowerment initiatives to communities throughout the mountain regions in Nepal and India.

The theme is ‘mountains’ and includes spectacular climbing footage from many of the world’s highest peaks including exceptional footage from the summit of Everest.
Website and dispatches We have a fortnightly e-newsletter with easy sign up on www.adventureconsultants.com and photo albums for each trip as well as virtual tours, maps, trip notes with itineraries, equipment lists, FAQs and lots of interesting articles and advice about climbing, trekking and skiing. A very popular aspect of our trips is that most expeditions have dedicated dispatch web pages that your friends and family can follow while you are on the expedition. The page is updated most days direct from the trip by the expedition leader, with pictures and updates on the team’s progress. Adventure Consultants was one of the first expedition companies to provide this service as standard on our expeditions and treks. We also have a large following on social media where insider news from the world of mountaineering is posted regularly.

Prices include
Guide fees, hut fees, all meals and snack foods whilst on the trip, group equipment such as ropes, tents and stoves, ground transport ex Wanaka, course manual (A Climbers Guide to New Zealand Mountaineering Techniques 2010, published by Adventure Consultants), Department of Conservation concession fees (37125-GUI), 15% New Zealand Goods and Services Tax and aircraft access as below. Aircraft access
The nature of the New Zealand mountains dictates that we utilise helicopters or ski-planes when entering the backcountry. This saves days of heavy load-carrying and allows us to concentrate on the climbing objective whilst making the best use of fine weather days. Aircraft access costs are included in all trip options except the 3 day Backcountry Ski Tour which is ski in / ski out access. For some trips we have also included the egress flight out from the mountains where this adds value to the itinerary – check inclusions / exclusions for the trip on the website. For the rest of the trips, egress flights out of the mountains are not included and should they be required, these would incur additional cost if utilised.
