uoyed by its hybrid caravan Parkes fleet juggernaut, Ezytrail is ‘testing the waters’ with what it justifiably terms a “cabin on wheels” – the Airlie GT ‘EzyHab’. “The Airlie GT or ‘EzyHab’ will introduce new and different camping possibilities based on customers’ feedback, combined with the typical Ezytrail offroad abilities,” says Ezytrail marketing manager, Sagrys Aelbregt.
STAR STABLE Ezytrail is renowned for its stable of hardfloor and softfloor camper trailers that arrive from China in a container, before heading for fabrication and modification at its headquarters in Kilsyth, Victoria. The Airlie GT is along similar lines, and once again Ezytrail’s considerable Australian design influence and R&D expertise comes to the fore in this preliminary version. “The ‘EzyHab’ comes in at an assembled stage. All parts that need to comply with Australian standards and regulations are then added, such as air-conditioner, fridge, gas and water plumbing and certification, bearings, brakes and suspension,” Aelbregt says. We recently reviewed the test model and were more than impressed with its serious offroad credibility, complemented by a decent whack of internal luxury. Okay, the 5.15m (16ft 11in) Airlie GT is a bulky brute for its dimensions, weighing in with a tare weight of 2780kg – and that’s before you factor in a 720kg payload! I’m uncertain how it would stack up over corrugations out in the sticks, so I would have liked to have given it plenty of ‘curry’ over more hostile terrain (considering I had access to a Toyota LC200 Altitude press vehicle) but had to contend with some gentle slopes within the Warburton

Valley, around 70km east of Melbourne. However, Aelbregt quickly jumped to its defence: “The Airlie GT’s weight is very well balanced and the aerodynamic design makes it a dream to tow, with twin water tanks of 160L each, nicely divided and with plenty of storage room and all main parts centred, the ball weight is very manageable. As the width of the trailer is only 2.1m, the ‘EzyHab’ sits nicely behind your car without the need for extension mirrors or the risk of damaging the van while going offroad. R&D trips have shown that the Airlie GT is ready for Australia’s off-grid travelling.” And I have no doubt the Airlie GT has the arsenal to survive remote off-grid expeditions for extended periods. It comprises a battle-ready aluminium composite and high checkerplate armour assisted by a sturdy powdercoatfinished 100x50x4mm Q345 (with 5mm-thick steel tube applied) RHS hot-dipped galvanised chassis and a robust fully-adjustable independent coil spring suspension, with twin shock absorbers on each wheel. And it rides on 265/75 R16 A/T offroad tyres with 16in six-stud alloy rims, and has 12in electric brakes. Aelbregt says, “solid coil springs will bring the van offroad without hurdles. Our suspension system has been tried and tested for the last seven years and perfected since.” I’m also a big fan of the Airlie GT’s battery (3x100Ah deep-cycle AGM) and water (2x160L) capacities – the batteries and stainless steel water tanks (with separate
Clockwise from top left: With a trailer width of only 21m, the Airlie GT sits nicely behind your car; you’ll sleep soundly in the double bed; the alfresco area has a contemporary home feel; releasing the over-centre latch on the side wall; the ‘back to nature’ Warburton Holiday Park is also petfriendly.

The Airlie GT also boasts a dual kitchen, with the external configuration being a slide-out Swift threeway hooded barbecue that’s ideal for the outdoor epicurean.
deploying the winches by the simple flick of a switch inside the van. (The electric opening will halt when the panels are levelled.) The marine-carpeted al fresco area enclosure (living room) is akin to what you’d see from a contemporary home designer. It’s a plush – and eye-catching – living room complemented by oodles of space. In fact, it’s like a private balcony! And it’s a versatile section of the van, doubling as a CANVAS CAPERS two-berth sleeping quarters after the dining table is But what really makes you sit up and take notice are dropped down and an easy to clean, easy to maintain the two fold-out compartments – a master bedroom leatherette cafe-style lounge is rearranged. Clockwise from top left: The internal kitchen ticks all the right boxes; the two fold-out sections make you sit up and take notice; an external kitchen for the outdoor chef; quality stainless steel appliances; the Airlie GT has a tried and tested suspension.

elsewhere in the van could have been devoted for packing away clothing and linen etc. There is sufficient light and ventilation in the van, and climatic control is provided by a roof-mounted Dometic CALR242 reverse-cycle air-conditioner (an updated version of the CAL242), with 2.3kW cooling and 2.1kW heating capacities and an improved modern air distribution box with a digital display that can be controlled via a remote control. Meanwhile, hot water is delivered by a 28L Swift gas/electric unit. The Airlie GT’s bathroom is a relatively compact shower/toilet combo, with virtual lip service paid to the vanity; and I thought it could have been better finished, particularly in relation to the silicone sealing. And a washing machine wouldn’t go astray while out woop woop.
THE BOTTOM LINE The Airlie GT ‘EzyHab’ is an unusual, but highly effective, design – almost a ‘hybrid’ in certain ways. Yes, the ‘tale of the tape’ reveals it’s a beefedup beast; in fact it’s built like the proverbial brick outhouse! But paradoxically it’s the brawny chassis and suspension that increases this prototype’s genuine offroad credentials … I’m sure it wouldn’t break up under topographical duress in the outback.

GRUNT
There’s no substitute for grunt when you’re in the bush, and that’s exactly what a Wild Boar camper delivers.

W
ild Boar feels equally at home in thick scrub as it does tearing up the red dust, climbing a rocky incline or stampeding down a sandy beach. The population of these wild beasties is growing quickly in Australia and its brains trust is formulating stronger bloodlines every day. Wild Boar starts with an imported base and adds some good old Aussie ingenuity and technique, plus it snorts at cheap componentry, only fitting premium electronics, suspension, couplings and seals all wrapped up in a visually appealing but thick hide to weather the test of long hard Aussie seasons. “I like shiny!” says Wild Boar's Paul Burton when I commented on the highly polished stainless steel trim and fittings adorning the Limited Edition model. It's this sort of detail that separates this beastie from the mob. Wild boars are renowned for being able adapt easily to harsh environments. The Wild Boar Tough Grunt LE is made of the same rugged DNA as its gristly namesake, yet has a high level of comfort for your touring pleasure. This Wild Boar is exceptional strong and sturdy on its feet with a terrific balance that makes long miles easy. Wild Boar manufactures its own independent trailing arm suspension complete with greaseable joints, fully-welded stub axles and premium 2.6 tonne coil springs with locally sourced Dobinson’s shock absorbers. The chassis is fully galvanised box section leading to a 100x50x4mm A-frame drawbar on the demonstration, however, this will be upgraded to 120x50x3mm for the full production model. I was pleased to see the main chassis rails being full-length and folded to the A-frame, which eliminated added stress on butt welds that can be a downfall in many competitive units. Wild Boar is so confident of its strength and durability, it provides a three year warranty on the suspension and five years on chassis. It rolls sturdily on 16in 10 ply All-Terrain tyres with attractive alloy mags ( six stud Nissan pattern) rated to 1150kg each plus 12in electric brakes. Out in front is an ARK 50mm offroad ball coupling and the ARK removable jockey wheel is a sign of commitment to quality and practicality over traditional swinging or removable accessories. Paul calls the ARK jockey wheel “a Godsend”, and I agree.

“There’ll be plenty of little piggies with their noses in the Wild Boar trough when word of this gets out!” The fully galvanised tub (whoa!) is big and deep, providing plenty of volume inside the camper plus room for versatile compartments and accessories. I must comment on the quality of premium finish both inside and out, but particularly the high gloss-baked enamel coatings, showing off Paul’s years of professional spray painting experience. The unit is available in every paint scheme imaginable, and can even be matched to your towing vehicle. The stainless steel edge trimming defines the shape and the shiny hinges, compression locks and assorted fittings give a bright accent to the aesthetics. On arrival to your campsite it’s only a matter of minutes to set up for an overnighter. The tail gate tilts down easily despite its twin spare wheels, LED tail lights and reversing light. You can order any combination of tool box, spare wheel or jerry can holders you like — all for the same price.

The rear slides back and the lid folds over easily, assisted by gas struts with the internal steel bows taking immediate shape and needing little adjustment. There is a selferecting tropical roof and it would have to be the tautest version I have witnessed in comparative campers. Step easily into the camper via a slide-out stairwell to a most inviting interior. The door has removable hinges for added ease and there is a footlight for night time safety. The switch panel is immediately to the RHS complete with USB outlets, 12V socket, Bluetooth stereo with twin enclosed speakers in the cabinetry, a new touch pad for lighting and power options and a digital voltage indicator. The front bulkhead is a fine example of the level of quality in this offering. Most competitors have some sort of storage in this area, some with timber doors, some with basic sheet alloy frontage , yet Wild Boar has fitted a series of S/S roller bearing sliding drawers with flush fit doors, compression locks, sensor lighting and internal trim. The internal layout is quite the same as most forward folds with a U-shaped dinette, however the back wall folds down to create a full double bed at the rear and the portable table drops down to form yet another double bed in the middle of the unit. Again the level of finished quality through the folded steel-painted cabinetry, marine grade vinyl upholstery, carpet-lined walls and laminate flooring is inspiring. There’s a pair of 100amp AGM batteries under the seats, as well as compartment storage throughout, and overhead is a series of LED strip lights complete with dimmers. Outside we assembled the wide 2.7m full length annexe roof that can stay attached when packing for the road. It comes complete with three side walls as well as a PVC floor and draft skirt plus a further 2m day annexe and

completely separate toilet/shower tent. Up front of the living or kerb side is a large fridge compartment with full stainless steal roller slides capable of housing a 110L fridge/freezer, but supplied as standard with a 75L dual zone Eva-Kool. All compartments feature full lining, sensor lighting, quality Australian automotive seals and the forward section has twin ventilation fans. Beside this is a convenient pull-out pantry with an innovative three-drawer design that will keep even the messiest of us organised, and above is a full width pole/ fishing rod locker. Further back is the lockable water filler and then a very well set up stainless steel kitchen complete with matching Smev sink and three-burner stove complete with flush-fitting covers and wind deflectors. There are three utensils/utility drawers and a full length bench folds out for preparation, plus the new model will feature a dish rack as standard. Underneath is a set of adjustable legs to keep the food and drinks in the pot plus a flexible mount LED light to see what’s cookin'. All in all the exceptionally low package price of only $24,900 (inc fridge) actually shocked me especially when you consider the long list of premium features, additions and accessories on a beautifully manufactured camper. There’ll be plenty of little piggies with their noses in the Wild Boar trough when word of this gets out!

am very familiar with the Paradise Motor Homes range, but I was particularly interested in this motorhome because it is the top-of-the-line model, built to order, and so presented a rare opportunity to review Paradise’s flagship motorhome. Myself, Campervan & Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) CEO Richard Barwick, and Adventures Group editor Kirstie Bedford, had an excellent opportunity to inspect the Independence Deluxe at the inaugural Motorhome Legends event in Shoalhaven Heads, front panels, and a one-piece fibreglass roof. It’s not NSW recently. We road-tested three motorhomes, and obvious, but a feature of the lower panel work is that it’s this one was the cream-of-the-crop in terms of luxury easily detachable from the upper panels in the event of an appointments and features. accident. NOOKS AND CRANNIES All the external bins, of which there are plenty along both sides of the motorhome, are fully sealed and have strut-assisted doors for easy opening. Those fitted under the slide-outs are, of course, more difficult to get at when it’s fully open. Some of the bins already have a function, like those built into the nearside slide-out that contain a BBQ, flatscreen TV that has a Paradise-manufactured mounting, as well as a fridge. In addition, one of the lower bins contains

the electrics and charger controls. Richard Barwick was particularly impressed by the external storage options and features. “The articulate professional design allows for loads of room, highlighted by the dual slide-outs and ample storage option. The external additions just add value including foldaway BBQ and television along with additional fridge accessed outside and streamlined automatic awning.”
A LUXURY PAD Richard felt the attention to detail demonstrated in the interior of this luxury unit was a real credit to the Paradise team. “The finer touches are appealing including the leather lounges and swivel chairs, large queen-size bed, full-face mirrors, and technology improvements, and the use of space in the en-suite where the washer/dryer is very desirable,” he says. “I do like a couple of simple, but effective improvements, in particular the light block-out blinds and the magnetic locks on all the drawers and cupboards.” Kirstie Bedford was equally impressed, noting the surround sound, soft closing cabinetry and heated massage seats in the front cab. “It’s literally a home away from home, in fact, I’d go so far as to say many hotel apartments aren’t to the quality, luxurious standard as the interior of this motorhome.”

HOURS OF POWER Powering the Independence is an Iveco Daily cab chassis. Its GVM of 7200kg, which will require the drivers to have an LR truck licence, comes with a generous 1300kg payload capacity, and the process of getting a licence is made easy by using someone like TDT Training, (see: www.transportdrivertraining.com.au, who assist you through both your theory, and practical, driving training). It is good that Paradise has opted to use the twin turbodiesel engine which delivers up to 150kW of power and a very healthy 470Nm of torque – something all diesel drivers appreciate. Even though it’s 8.6m (28ft, 3in) long, the Independence is a very easy driving vehicle, especially with Iveco’s smooth eight-speed gearbox. For the electrical system, there’s no shortage of power with the 300A Lithium battery being charged up by to 600W of solar panel capacity or the 2.6KVA pure sine wave generator. For quiet camping applications, the 3000W inverter/charger will deliver the 240V load.
THE BOTTOM LINE There’s no doubt that the Paradise’s Independence Deluxe is an expensive motorhome. However, it does come fully kitted out with just about every motorhome comfort and safety feature in the known RV universe. Staying with the tried and true seems to be the new Paradise owners formula for the moment, and that would seem to be very wise for what is a very luxurious

Richard believes Paradise would be at the top of everyone’s wish list, “with a price tag that is applicable to the quality”. “The attention to detail is a real credit to the manufacturer’s ability to deliver a fantastic motorhome. You could want for no more than what is provided in the Paradise Independence Series. Paradise should be congratulated on a very aesthetically pleasing, practical and luxurious motorhome.” Adventures Group editor Kirstie Bedford agrees, “if you’re looking for five star luxury on wheels, you’ve found it – Paradise really does reflect its namesake.”

vans Head, a gem on the far North Coast of NSW, is known for sun, surf and beautiful beaches. However, on a weekend in October when the Option RV Owners Club met for its inaugural rally, celebrating Options’ 10th anniversary, the sun and sand gave way to rain. It seemed as though it wouldn’t stop. The rain played the blues, flooding portions of the North Coast Holiday Parks Evans Head, washing out the barefoot bowls, causing a couple of lengthy blackouts and putting a damper on the sausage sizzle. But for the more than 100 caravanners who attended it didn’t matter – at least not too much. That’s because they gathered from across eastern Australia, from Melbourne to Townsville, and despite the rain, it was clear they belonged to an extended family rather than just another caravan club..
THE LOCATION Named after a marine surveyor, Lt Evans, RN, who carried out the first marine survey of the coastline in the area, Evans Head is a wonderful destination when the weather is good and the fish are jumping. Great beaches include Shark Bay for novice surfers, and Airforce Beach for 4WD enthusiasts. When we arrived, we were in time to join the conversation around a sausage sizzle and were keen to discover and enjoy Evans Head’s natural beauty. And then the rain started to fall. That didn’t matter; it was just an opportunity to retire to some Option RV caravans and yarn to the owners.

“Our customers become more like friends and family”
NOT A HARD OPTION The Dumaloski family own an unusual Option RV van. Unlike the normally swift construction turnaround, the Dumaloski family waited ten years for theirs. It’s not that it’s remarkably different. It has quality suspension and is well appointed. In fact, other than a rather heavy looking bench top, it’s on par with the typical quality product associated with Option RV. In a break in the rain, the family sat below their awning and explained why owning Option RV has meant waiting a decade to enjoy their own caravan. Phil Dumaloski takes up a story that dated back to 2007 when his father Chris started the business, and then shortly afterwards encouraged his sons Phil, Steve and Damien to pitch in to get things moving. ‘We thought, there’s something in this, and we actually fell in love with building vans. We started building 35 units a year and then got involved with Caravan World Dealership on the Sunshine Coast and things escalated from there on,’ Phil explained. Phil said that for the last decade the family business has been busy building ‘everyone else’s
dreams,’ and they’ve been so busy that it took this long for them to find the time to build a van that the Dumaloski family could share. Now Phil reckons they’ve got the time to get out and about and enjoy their own Option RV caravan – capable of housing his parents Chris and Mary, or perhaps Phil, his wife Lench and their bubbly children Mia and Michael. Sitting beside daughter-in-law Lench, Mary Dumaloski grew teary glancing down the rows of Option RV vans that had assembled for the inaugural club rally. She says, ‘our customers become more like friends and family,’ and the idea that so many owners had thought so much about their vans and the family overwhelmed her. It was a sentiment that Lench echoed later that evening when we met the entire group of club members for dinner at the Evans Head Bowls Club, saying their customers ‘were family.’ While munching on mouth-watering Chinese tucker, Option RV patriarch Chris underscored the idea, saying business ‘grew not just from work, but on memories.’

Among all the Option RV owners, Dennis and Alice Smith are some of Option RV’s earliest clients. They bought their RV within the first 12 months of the company’s formation. It happened when a friend’s caravan kept blowing 12 volt lights. After the friend had used up any spares he had, and then all of Dennis’ spare lights, they wandered over to a caravan dealership to see if they could buy some new ones. Instead of buying the lights the two men ended up buying new vans. Dennis purchased Option RV’s 47th van produced and his mate picked up number 48. So keen to see their new van, Dennis and Alice left their home at Port Stephens on the NSW central coast and drove for 1000km to Melbourne’s northern outskirts. They then moved into the caravan park near the Option RV factory so they could visit daily and watch their van being built. The couple reckon they decided upon the Option RV because it would enable them to ‘free camp’, and it had the host of fixtures and fittings - including satellite television - that they didn’t have in their old caravan. Moreover, the couple thought the van was ‘value for money.’ A decade later while camping at Woodford on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland, the couple bumped into other Option owners who told them about the club and its first rally. “We thought,” Alice says, “what a great thing to be able to be part of.” Thinking about the Dumaloski family he added with a smile, “none of us could hold them in higher esteem than what they are”.
Walking around the Option RV club members, one theme dominated the conversation. It was simply the generosity and kind spirit of the Dumaloskis. For example, so taken by the family and the quality of their product, one member has joined the rally despite having just ordered her van and having to camp in another brand caravan while she waited for hers to be built. Then there was the story of a pair of long-term customers, Allan and Zelma Shipton. The ever-witty Zelma reckons their names are easy to remember because ‘Allan starts the alphabet and I have always finished it.’ Explaining how they ended up with an Option RV, Zelma says, “they got us in straight away because we had an accident in our previous van. We were trying to think of a name for our new van when Phil said he’d been to the Caribbean for his honeymoon. So, we called it the Caribbean and it’s been a honeymoon ever since.” Adventurers at heart, every winter they pack up, leave their NSW Central Coast home, and head to the Gulf of Carpentaria - returning home every September or October. For them, their caravan design meant things like the simplicity of two 12 volt fridges, drawers rather than a slide out pantry, and a generous mid-van en-suite. They arrived at the Option RV rally expecting that Option owners would be as nice as the Dumaloski family, and Allan says the group hasn’t disappointed them, and they’ve already meet many new mates.

W
hile more and more coastal caravan parks are being turned into commercial developments, four shires in Western Australia have gone to great lengths to preserve a chunk of the WA coastline for future generations to enjoy coastal camping. The stretch of coast, along the Coral Coast in the Mid West of Western Australia, is a three hour drive north of Perth, an area which sees many RVs pass through via the Brand Highway (particularly during wildflower season) or along the Indian Ocean Drive, meandering through Nambung National Park to see the famous Pinnacles desert. There’s plenty of walking and cycling trails and local residents day trip to the area for 4WD adventures, fishing, bird watching, snorkelling, surfing on giant white sand dunes and swimming in Ellendale Pool, a natural watering hole along the Greenough River. If this 340kms of pristine coastline existed anywhere
else in Australia, the area might be prime real estate for coastal condos and high rises, but the local towns here have made it a priority to retain the coast specifically for the self-drive leisure tourism market, and preserve freedom camping, right on the beach at popular spots such as Cliff Head, or low cost camping at Sandy Cape.

A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT Spearheaded by Nicole Nelson, Acting Director Planning, Community and Infrastructure, at the Shire of Irwin, the $2.5 million Coastal Nodes Project included short stay campsites, which are among 200 campsites in the Mid West, including those at Sandy Cape in the Shire of Dandaragan, Milligan Island in the Shire of Coorow, Cliff Head in the Shire of Irwin and Lucky Bay in the Shire of Northampton. When the shires first teamed up with support from the Mid West Development Commission, and Tourism Western Australia, seeking funding from ‘Royalties for

Regions’ (a government initiative enhancing regional development), the goal was to simply put a serious refresh on the area’s much-loved coastal campsites. This was in order to attract both the self-drive tourism market and fishing and aquatic day-trippers, and open up the region from as far south as the Indian Ocean Drive to the north at Lucky Bay, south of Kalbarri. The local governments, which share the region’s boundaries, then decided to join forces to make the area a self-drive drawcard with a shared commitment to refreshing camping and campground infrastructure. The project was extended to include not only refreshing the sites and facilities, and planting native species of vegetation, but also included the rehabilitation of old access tracks and entry points off the main road to ‘open up’ the Mid West coast and increase access. Now complete, the ‘Coastal Nodes Project’ is expected to attract an additional 4,700 people annually bringing an additional $585,000 into the region. But like any new project, it brought with it its own set of challenges, says Nicole Nelson. “Some local governments received enquiries from residents who were concerned about opening up their favourite fishing and camping spots to the nation, but
66 TradeRVs.com.au
each site is well separated from the next, so there’s lots of privacy and lots of sites on offer.” She says, “this project is also quite rare in that four local governments in two development boundaries have worked together in one development”. “It did mean regular meetings were not always possible in person, so there were constant emails, and regular phone conferences being sent to the team to ensure everyone was on track.” Nelson also adds that the locations proved to be tricky to redevelop, as they were without both water or power, and had limited accessibility, meaning everything needed to be carted in, “products were specifically designed to ensure protection from the elements to ensure they were low maintenance, because the infrastructure needed to be able to stand up to the harsh coastal conditions of wind, salt and rust, and withstand the test of time.”
THE BIGGER PROJECT The project is one of six priorities identified within the Mid West Tourism Development Strategy 2015-2025, which focuses on increasing accommodation capacity from camping through to resorts, and opening up day use sites places previously overlooked or under developed.

She says other priorities include opening up the Abrolhos Islands to visitors and the Kalbarri National Park iconic skywalk, which is currently underway.
THE RESULT So far, Nicole says, they have received overwhelmingly positive feedback. “The response has been extremely positive with users doing all our marketing for us on social media, including drone footage of the locations placed on YouTube. “All sites are being well utilised and users are supporting the participating local governments by purchasing their supplies from the nearby towns of Kalbarri, Northampton, Dongara, Port Denison, Leeman, Green Head and Jurien Bay.” She says the collaboration allowed the local governments to develop great working relationships, so they can look for ways in which they can include the whole Mid West region, working alongside the Mid West Development Commission and Tourism WA in attracting visitors as well as creating economic benefit to the region. As the Project Manager, the Shire of Irwin has also spoken at several tourism and local government conferences to inspire other regions to work together to achieve similar great results. “Following our start up, Tourism WA took the idea to local governments in the South West of the state who also developed 11 campsites across six local governments,” she says.

“We are proud to have lead this project, it’s great to identify a need, but to successfully see the project to completion is another thing. It has taken us several years of careful planning, talking to the right people and collaboration, and we’re now seeing the benefits through visitors’ positive feedback. “To make a difference we needed the entire region to be RV friendly, not just one town, and are confident the RV market will travel from the other side of Australia to support the region and travel the beautiful coastline.”
THE FUTURE The concept is one Tourism Western Australia was quick to support. “Western Australian beaches are regularly
voted among the best in the world, and with good reason,” says Tourism Western Australia’s CEO Steve Wood. “Along its 12,500 kilometres of coastline, you’ll find some of the most stunning World Heritage scenery, once-in-alifetime wildlife encounters, and endless opportunities for beach holiday memories. “Camping in WA is a great way to immerse yourself in the world-renowned natural wonders and diversity of Western Australia’s coast.” For the Shire of Irwin, the campaign has shown how with a bit of collaboration, and a lot of hard work, coastal parks needn’t be resigned to redevelopment, and how big thinking from small towns is opening up entire new areas to the RV market.

ifestyle Campers sees the definition of the Reconn as “a small, strong hypercamper prepared for anything, designed and manufactured by highly trained personnel in Australia, and capable of conquering any landscape” and I would say that most certainly applies to its new Reconn R2 model. The Reconn R2 follows the very successful Reconn, which has been a part of the extensive Lifestyle range for three years. However, the newcomer isn’t simply offered in the calming blue and white colour scheme which has become a major feature of the Lifestyle image, and now comes in an ominous matt dark grey and black, with a whole new persona. And wow, does it ever have a presence. The Reconn is really aimed at couples with a taste for adventure. “We want people who, when everyone else says, ‘let’s turn right,’ will say, ‘we’re going left,’“ says Lifestyle CEO John Swinglehurst. And that about sums up what the Reconn R2 offers. Basically the Reconn R2 is a big camper with lots of storage room, a limited internal living area plus a big, comfortable bed and one of Lifestyle’s roomy, well laid out side kitchens. It isn’t a small camper, and at 5725mm long (standard drawbar), 1880mm wide and 2100mm high and with a Tare weight of 1700kg, as tested (1600kg standard and well up on the original Reconn’s 1400kg), it may have some limitations in tight scrub (though we couldn’t find any)—but it has a go-anywhere capacity that will give you confidence to branch out on your own, well off the grid.
72 TradeRVs.com.au
We took it through some pretty rough and tight situations, down steep slopes, over boulders, over loose gravel, along dirt and over corrugations and quite frankly it never put a foot wrong. It was comfortable to sleep in and that kitchen is fantastic.
SO, WHAT’S IT MADE UP OF? The R2 rolls on a sturdy 150x50x3mm hot-dip galvanised chassis. The suspension is Cruisemaster trailing arm independent with dual shocks, rated at 2600kg to match the camper’s ATM. When we had it out, it had 270L of water on board, plus two gas bottles and the awning and poles—so was well short of fully-loaded. We thought that it might have resulted in a ride that was too stiff, but it seemed to move freely and without any sign of being anything other than well adapted to the job. Our camper rolled on attractive optional 16x7in rims with 285/75R16 mud-terrains, wider than the standard 265/75R16 rubber. These are attached to 12in drums. The basic set-up includes a single spare mounted on the rear, though our test unit had dual spares. Unlike so many Lifestyle campers the R2 doesn’t come with an internal ensuite— although that’s coming as an option—but it did have an optional toilet installed beneath one of the internal seats, accessed by lifting off the seat cushion. This was to be standard, but some customer enquiries were along the lines of leaving it out, so several original features have been converted to options and the base price has dropped from $56,950 to $53,950. There is comfortable seating on sumptuous internal upholstery for three adults around an extendable table

immediately inside the door. Overhead were three touchdimmable LED lights, and an optional swing-down fan. The floor is vinyl. The bed is a queen-sized inner-spring pillow-top mattress that is 1107mm above the floor. That puts it at about the level of an adult’s lower rib cage, so it requires some kind of step to access it and may be a bit difficult for older knees. The primary access is via the bench seat along the driver’s side with a secondary option of a fold-down step near the entry door. The latter is a bit problematical as it is right inside the doorway and access through the door is prohibited when it’s in place. There are three large screened windows around the bed and three smaller windows at the front, above the table. All have internally zipped covers. These can all be left open when lowering the roof. For the occasions when the weather is inclement and all the windows must be closed there are four shielded vents just below the roofline to allow air to circulate. The roof is a pop-top, which on our test camper was equipped with an automatic lift system. Simply undo the four corner over-centre latches – don’t forget them or the low-geared auto system will buckle the roof – and press the button inside the door. In a minute the roof is up and locked in place. In the event of a failure with the electronic system, the
74 TradeRVs.com.au
roof can be manually lifted into place if the system is disconnected. The body itself is made from aluminium composite panelling over a sturdy galvanised frame. There is foam insulation in the aluminium roof and all the walls other than that at the front. In front of the doorway is a fridge locker with an excellent carpeted slide. At 990x190x580mm the space is big enough to take up to an 82L Evakool and still have room for an optional pantry drawer above. It was good to see sturdy anchor points provided. Above the door and at the back of the space were two handy LED lights. The camper is attached via a Vehicle Components DO35 hitch and sustained at the level when free-standing with a heavy duty Ark XO dual jockey wheel. With the high ATM a break-away unit is fixed to the front of the drawbar. The ball weight is an estimated 160kg when empty.

design glitches, but most of what we pointed out the crew were aware of and had fixes in hand. As an adventurous tourer we can’t see how you’d want anything more. Yes, it’s a big camper, and when fully loaded it would be a heavy package, but our test unit, which must have been close to two tonnes in weight as we headed west along the motorway out of Brisbane was recording 12.4L/100km on the fuel consumption gauge of our Pajero, and it handled all that we threw at it with style. For what you get, the price is pretty good, there is a huge options list and I, for one, would be perfectly happy to set out on my next adventure in one.

DIY Installing an air compressor
ONBOARD AIR COMPRESSOR WORDS TONY RABITT
Onboard compressed air when you need it at the push of the button

INSTALLATION W
hether you’re into hard-core four wheel driving or weekend camping with the family, there is one thing every four wheel drive should carry as standard equipment and that’s the ability to compress air. Adjusting tyre-pressures to suit driving conditions, operating diff locks and inflating air-bed mattresses are among the most common uses of these must-have devices. Compressors suitable for four wheel driving fall into two categories: portable and onboard. The portable varieties are popular as they can be cost-effective and are readily available at just about any automotive parts and accessories outlet but, seriously, you can’t beat a good quality onboard system. It’s a common misconception that onboard systems are complicated to install yourself or expensive to have professionally fitted. Well I can tell ya folks, after
this DIY, you’ll have the confidence to fit-up your own onboard air compressor with ease. I recently upgraded my system to the ARB High Output CKMA12 onboard air kit—and it was dead easy. The kit comes with a comprehensive installation guide, a complete wiring harness and all the hardware to complete the job. The tools required are minimal and readily available. The main compressor unit is designed to accommodate flexibility in installation as the base and main body can be manoeuvred into a variety of positions in order to fit into obscure places, if required. The unit can be used as a stand-alone air compressor for tyre inflation but can also be used to power ARB’s Air Locker systems. In fact, the CKMA12 comes pre-wired to plug straight into ARB’s Air Locker systems. Righto, let’s get into it!

Decide on a suitable location for the unit Most people seem to mount their compressors in the engine compartment, and that’s fine, however I chose to mount mine in the cargo area just in front of my fridge. When I bought my old GQ, the compressor was located inside the rear quarter cavity behind the trim. It was a very handy place to have an onboard compressor, but unfortunately the CKMA12 has different dimensions so will not fit.

DIY Safety and Standards

KNOW YOUR
LIMITS WORDS malcolm street
When it comes to maintenance there are plenty of DIY jobs you can do, but sometimes it’s necessary to leave the bigger, more difficult ones to the professionals
I
think the popularity of doing DIY maintenance on our vans and vehicles is declining. This is due, in part, to the fact that these vans and vehicles have become more sophisticated in recent years. Take a car for instance. Back in the day, I knew how to set spark plugs, check the battery acid levels, change the oil and roughly tune the carburettors – my first car, a VW Half Back, had two! But times have changed and we’re now faced with fuel-injected engines, hefty emission requirements and sealed batteries. These days, engines are often simply too complicated to work on without a diagnostic computer to plug into. And caravans can be much the same. Back in the day, it was a matter of checking the towball grease, re-packing the wheel bearings, de-rusting the chassis (none of that fancy hot-dipped galvanised stuff back then!), and fitting extra shelves and lighting because both were usually in short supply. But, despite technological advances, there are still plenty of maintenance and DIY jobs you can do yourself – if you have the knowledge and the experience. However, there are others that you should not attempt without due care or the right assistance from a professional. Just about anyone with basic mechanical/handyman skills can build, repair or maintain a caravan or camper trailer without falling foul of the law. The Federal Government’s Vehicle Standards Bulletins outline what you can and can’t do, and the one of major interest here is VSB 1 (small trailers under 4.5t). If you build a caravan without any gas appliances or 240V power supply, for instance, by installing diesel or methylated spirits-fired cookers, water and space heaters, then all you have to comply with to get your caravan/ camper trailer registered are the relevant essentials in VSB 1. Motorhomes are a little different and there are a few more regulations to comply with, including the
need for Second Stage Compliance on the original cab chassis.
GAS MATTERS
Top: There are no applicable standards to fitting 12V systems such as LED lighting Above: knowing what you are doing at all times is important.
But most modern RVs do have an LP gas system and, consequently, the entire gas system has to comply with Australian/New Zealand Standard 5601. That means any work done on the gas system needs to be performed or signed off by a licensed professional. I recently read on a forum about someone wanting to add an external LP gas outlet to their van for a barbecue. In many ways it’s a simple job but, legally, it has to be done by a licensed gas fitter.
ELECTRICAL AND SOLAR Like an LP gas system, most RVs also have a 240V mains electrical system and you are required by law to have that installed and maintained by a licensed electrician to the requirements of AS/NZS 3000 and 3001 – both electrical standards. And there’s another, lesser-known
CaravanWorld.com.au 79
DIY Safety and Standards complex but, strangely enough, there are no applicable standards to adhere to, so anyone who knows what they are doing can work on them. That’s the caveat here, though – it’s very important that you know what you’re doing. Many 12V devices are quite complicated and, consequently, quite expensive. And while a mistake might hurt your bank balance and your pride, it could also start a fire!
DRILLING HOLES There is nothing illegal about drilling holes in caravan walls and cabinetry to mount shelves or fittings, but you have to be aware of what might be behind or in the wall. Caravan manufacturers often run mains 240V cables through the walls and across the roof. So a mistake here could be very expensive and you may end up having to remove the wall cladding! Personally, I don’t think it’s a great idea to drill holes in the roof of your RV, either – it’s just one more place for water to leak through! You also need to consider the strength of the external walls of your van. Quite a few modern caravans don’t have frames and, while they may be strong enough in their original guise, adding something like a weighty shelf or awning that the manufacturer didn’t account for might be a bridge too far. Even the professionals get it wrong here, though – I’ve seen many sagging roofs caused by retrofitted air-conditioners!
CHASSIS ADDITIONS Adding anything to a chassis, like a storage box or bumper bar, should be done with care. Apart from the original chassis structure, which is welded together, many accessories are bolted on rather than welded by the manufacturers themselves. You don’t see it much on caravan chassis, but I have DON’T BE TEMPTED seen many truck chassis with ‘no weld’ signs, to avoid It can be tempting to do a little bit of work on the electrics chassis distortion and weakening. yourself – things you might deem simple jobs – but things Then there is also the issue of adding things like extra can and do go wrong. water tanks or storage boxes that might affect the balance For example, the powerpoints in caravan bathrooms are or towing dynamics.. often in odd places but it’s usually to do with the location of the sink. You might think your powerpoint could be better relocated by drilling a hole in the bathroom or kitchen wall and tapping into the back of the kitchen powerpoint.
