Day 4
Saint Vincent de Cosse to Les Eyzies 22km/13.5mi/6hr
From Château Monrecour you start off following the course of the Dordogne River along riverside paths, meandering through fields of maize, then climb up into the lively town of St Cyprien and via well marked paths through shaded woodland to your hotel set in lovely private gardens just outside Les Eyzies.
Day 5
Périgord is one of the largest and most picturesque areas in France. It is divided into two by the river Dordogne which founded the historic frontier between France and England during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Along its banks you‘ll find over a thousand castles steeped in legend and history, and witness to centuries of conquests and distinct cultures. Today the rich and varied culture of this land is still here for you to discover. The towering strongholds of Beynac, Castelnaud, Domme and Montfort offer breathtaking views and your route also takes you to little-known châteaux hidden deep in the woods. The walks will take you past dramatic limestone cliffs, along tranquil riverside paths and through mediaeval villages. You’ll also climb through fields and shaded woodland to hilltop towns offering spectacular panoramic views. You’re never far from both the Dordogne and Vézère rivers, so you often get the chance to swim and fishing and canoeing are also alternative options. The Périgord is renowned for its traditional gastronomy and at the end of each day, you’ll experience a delicious Périgord feast washed down with fine Cahors or Bergerac wines. Try the gourmet fare of foie gras, truffles, confits d’oie and the walnut liqueur eau de noix. You stay at a grand country manor, a beautifully preserved château, a stylish “ Very HHHH eco-friendly hotel and a familyenjoyable holiday. run hotel set in the lovely traditional hamlet of Tamniès en Périgord. All Beautiful area, lovely route. “ hotels have private swimming pools.
At Les Eyzies
Les Eyzies – an archaeologist’s paradise – lies at the base of steep limestone cliffs crowned with evergreen oaks and junipers. The rock is lined with caves and shelters inhabited by Stone Age man tens of thousands of years ago and the town is world-famous as the ‘capital of prehistory’. The Grotte de Font de Gaume contains multi-coloured paintings of animals and a remarkable frieze of bison.
Day 6
Les Eyzies to Tamniès en Périgord 24km/15mi/6hr
Leave Les Eyzies taking the GR6 path through sleepy hamlets and shady wooded valleys. First stop is the Roc de Cazelle - a troglodyte cave complex excavated in the cliffs and inhabited from prehistoric to mediaeval times (and even, allegedly, as recently as 1966!). Then it’s on through woodland to the hilltop village of Tamniès en Périgord for a refreshing dip in the pool.
Day 7
At Tamniès en Périgord
The pretty flower-filled village of Tamniès en Périgord looks down on the Vallée de la Beune. There is an interesting C12 church housing an amazing multi-coloured wooden crucifix. Not far from here is the C16 Château de Puy Martin, perched on a hill and renowned for its lush furnishings and tapestries. We provide full walking notes for a local circular walk; alternatively there’s a sandy lake beach just 5 minutes walk away where you can swim if you fancy a change from the hotel pool.
Day 8
Tamniès en Périgord to Sarlat 15km/9mi/4hr or 19km/12mi/5hr
Your walk from Tamniès back to Sarlat takes you through woodland and up through the hills - great views of the surrounding valleys - via Marquay and on through the sleepy village of Campagnac with its evocative château. Then you’re on the outskirts of Sarlat, ready to savour its mediaeval delights again.

This popular walking holiday is based in two contrasting centres so you can enjoy the very best bits of this beautiful corner of southern Italy. The Amalfi Coast offers walking with breathtaking scenery at every step. Walkers will appreciate the network of wide and well-maintained mule paths criss-crossing the region, some of them centuries old dressed stone steps. The paths wander among lemon and olive groves, pines and oaks, valleys and ridges. They are lined with sweet-smelling herbs and bright with freesias, geraniums and honeysuckle. The tracks are never far from the sparkling blue sea and give spectacular views of the near-vertical towns below. The walks generally start on higher ground and descend to the coast in time for an afternoon dip! Our guides are very enthusiastic about showing off their region. They’ll teach you all about the local flora and folklore and make sure that you taste the “ Great best food from the region including hand company to deal with . picked trattorie where you can stop for lunch (allow approximately We were looked after very £15 per day). The HHH Hotel Garden in Ravello perches above the famous Amalfi coast and affords stunning views from its dining terrace, just a stone’s throw from the celebrated Villa Rufolo and the historic main square. All 10 rooms are air-conditioned with balcony and sea views. The Bellavista Francischiello in Massa Lubrense is a friendly HHH family-run hotel with incredible views of Capri. There is an outdoor pool, panoramic sun terrace and small spa. All double rooms are air-conditioned with balcony and sea view.
well indeed! ” Ms B Philliben
Ravello/Pontone/Amalfi 10km/6mi/3-3.5hrs
Ravello is enchanting and “must sees” include Moorish Villa Rufolo and its semi tropical gardens. After lunch we follow a scenic path down to Ponte dello Ziro watchtower to enjoy great coastal views, then descend to Amalfi via the Valley of the Mills. Time to visit one of the old mediaeval paper mills, and the strikingly striped C13 Cathedral before returning to Ravello by bus.
Day 4
Sentiero degli Dei 11km/7mi/4hr
Past treasure caves and terraces of lemon trees, we explore the “Pathway of the Gods”, Amalfi’s most scenic walk. When the nearly vertical town of Positano comes into sight, we have a bird’s eye view of tiny boats, pretty villas, grey volcanic beaches and churches. Lunch in a traditional trattoria perhaps, then on to our second hotel, in Massa Lubrense, by minibus.
Day 5
Free day
The most popular option is to take a bus from just outside the hotel to Sorrento (15 mins) and pick up the hydrofoil across to Capri. Known as the “Pearl of Naples”, Capri is arguably the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean. It has over 800 species of flowers and plants, and magnificent grottoes along the coast.
Day 6
Pompeii and Annunziata 11km/7mi/4.5hr
First stop today is Pompeii (1 hour by minibus, transfer provided). We’ve employed an expert local guide here so that you can truly discover this ancient city. After lunch it’s on to lovely Annunziata, from where the King of Naples laid siege on the English who were occupying Capri at the time. Explore its pretty park, offering balcony views of the island, before descending to the unspoilt port of Marina della Lobra.
Day 7
Punta Campanella 12km/7.5mi/4.5hrs
Walking through herb-scented scrubland, we reach Sorrento’s “Land’s End”, and the watchtower of Punta Campanella. There are breathtaking views across to Capri from here. The point got its name when in 1558 Saracen pirates, escaping with captured women and gold, stole the bell from the local church, but were unable to set sail until they had thrown it overboard. Every year on St. Valentine’s Day the bell is said to rise to the surface and toll once more. In the afternoon we follow a coastal path back to our hotel in time for a limoncello by the sea before dinner.

Oeschinensee 15km/9mi/5hr
Widely regarded as the jewel in the crown of the Bernese Oberland, Oeschinensee is, in our view, the most beautiful Alpine lake in Switzerland. After a short ride up on the gondola (included), you climb to the viewpoint at Heuberg. Nothing can prepare you for the cobalt blue of the water surrounded by the razor-edged peaks of the Doldenhorn (3638m), towering 2000m above it, and striped by dainty waterfalls trickling down from the Frunden glacier.
A weeks’ stay here uncovers the very best of the region: a huge turquoise lake enclosed by towering cliffs, a ‘hidden’ valley headed by a glacier you can touch, a sheer gorge carved out by glacial meltwaters, an Alpine pass that has been used since Celtic times and more wild flowers than you ever even knew existed! Oh and what views! The 3970m Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau and Matterhorn all proudly display their white peaks, and a plethora of other summits and glaciers is closer to hand. Amazingly, all of this is accessible on well-defined paths directly from the hotel or after a short bus or gondola ride.

The Gasterntal and Kanderfirn Glacier 13km/8mi/5hr
This is a day full of thrilling experiences, starting with an exciting 20 minute minibus ride (included) along a narrow road literally carved out of the rock wall. The Gasterntal is Kandersteg’s ‘hidden valley’, dozens of snow-fed waterfalls thundering down the sheer rock faces carved out by a gigantic glacier 10,000 years ago. From this romantic nature reserve, and with the mighty rock walls of the Tatlishorn and Atels towering up on the right, you meander through woods and open meadows; look out for lady slippers, fire lilies and more than 25 varieties of orchid!
Kandersteg is in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, where the great arc of the Alps culminates in some of its highest and most spectacular peaks. GUIDED, HOTEL-TO-HOTEL
On the way to Jasenice we stop first at ancient Epidaurum in Cavtat for a gentle stroll along one of the peninsulas. Then onto the hills to Jasenice where a cobbled path lined with rosemary winds across an open valley dotted with oak trees with Mount Snjeznica (1234m) to our right and Mount Straziste ahead. Then Dubrovnik’s mountainous coastline frames the horizon as we descend through meadows bright with crocuses to Velji Do where we’ll lunch on lamb and fish cooked in a traditional peka (charcoal oven). Free time this afternoon to enjoy a quick dip in the hotel pool before a guided tour of Dubrovnik and dinner.
Day 3
Croatia’s rich cultural heritage is matched only by its amazing natural beauty: sandy beaches, unspoilt islands, tourist-free villages and barely-visited historic sites - all perfect for exploring on foot. Travelling with our local guide, in an air-conditioned vehicle, we follow easy coastal paths to rocky coves and forest paths leading to tiers of shimmering waterfalls. We’ll also visit the many historically significant sites that have influenced modern day Croatia. There’s the UNESCO listed old town of Dubrovnik, its well-preserved ramparts surround a honeycomb of Renaissance churches, secret courtyards and sumptuous merchants palaces. Founded by the Romans, Split’s famous UNESCO Diocletian Palace was once the Emperor’s retirement home. Today its warren of narrow alleys houses the town’s Cathedral, and its cavernous cellars are used as art galleries. Finally on to Trogir, where the first Greek settlers landed, listed by UNESCO for its wealth of “ We have classical buildings such as St Lovro’s church not stopped talking and the Venetian loggia. We’re extremely pleased with our choice about this holiday since of hotels too, all of which are near the we returned! ” historical centres. In Dubrovnik, we stay in a HHHHH hotel on the Lapad Mrs B Ingram peninsula with its spectacular cliffside position offering superb views. On Brac, our HHH hotel in Bol, a pretty honey-coloured stone mansion, lies on the harbour front, with all rooms affording sea views. Our HHHH hotel in Trogir is in the old town, run Trogir by the Buble family, whose history Split in the town can be traced over eight Brac centuries. Evening meals and some Blaca Bol lunches are taken in local restaurants where we’ll savour the excellent regional cuisine. Air conditioned rooms Ston are guaranteed throughout.

Makarska and Brac Island
Today we head to Brac Island via Ston (3hr transfer includes 10km along the Bosnian coastline) famous for its oysters. A short stroll takes us to Mali Ston where we have lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to Makarska where we board the 50min ferry to Brac Island. After the ferry, a 40 minute drive to Bol, our destination for the next two days. We arrive just in time for dinner in a lovely restaurant by the seafront.
Day 5
Blaca Monastery 5km/3mi/2.5hr
Visit Blaca Bay where we’ll learn how monks once exported 70,000 litres of wine a year to Venice and had a Viennese piano hauled up here, before following a coastal path that winds through pine trees to turquoise blue coves where we’ll stop for a picnic. Then a last swim on Bol’s horseshoe sandy beach before dinner in the old town.
Day 6
Bol to Trogir via Split
It’s a 40 minute drive to Skrip, the oldest village on the island, where we visit the Folk Museum, housed in a C17 tower built to fend off the Turks. We then follow a mule track descending gently past olive groves and figs to Splitska. After our walk we board the ferry (50 mins) to Split for lunch, then we’ll join the guided tour of Split where we visit the UNESCO listed Diocletian Palace, Romanesque cathedral and old city walls before continuing to Trogir where you’ll spend your last two nights.
Day 7
Krka National Park 8km/5mi/3hr
We drive to Krka National Park (90 mins) to observe a myriad of lakes and waterfalls. A stony path lined with aleppo pines gently descends to Lake Cikola, then a brief ascent rewards us with views over the park. After a picnic, we’ll explore the tiers of ponds bright with yellow water lilies that shimmer below mighty Skradinski waterfall. Then along the river bank to pretty Skradin with its marina, returning to Trogir before our final dinner.

This gentle and unhurried gastronomic cycling holiday follows a triangular route through the heart of the great Loire Valley. En route highlights include the majestic châteaux of Amboise and Chambord, and the rich Renaissance splendour of Chenonceau. You’ll pass vineyards, sunflowers and pretty, sleepy villages, before pedalling gently along shady riverbanks and out through open countryside abundant with wildlife.
Arrive at Chissay
On each cycling day, you’ll have the opportunity to taste dozens of different wines – stopping at big wineries or village vineyards as the mood takes you – in a wine region more varied and diverse than any other in the world.
“The Headwater experience is something everybody should do. ” Mrs L Kohn
The places you’ll be staying in have been hand-picked for their elegant cuisine, extensive wines and beautiful settings. All have picturesque gardens and private swimming pools, and the Château de Chissay (where you spend 2 nights) is a former royal residence! Headwater’s specially created gastronomic menus (typically 4 courses) include dishes such as sandre en croûte d’escargots, selle d’agneau a l’ail nouveau and tarte tatin all washed down with a glass or two of the many fine local wines.
St Ouen-les-Vignes Chissay
At St Ouen-les-Vignes
It’s just a 5km cycle south to the narrow bustling streets of Amboise. Visit the flamboyant Royal Palace and the elegant Clos Lucé, a C15 manor house where Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked for the last few years of his life. His workshops house 40 giant models of some of his most spectacular creations, the first plane, helicopter and tank, and the beautifully landscaped gardens bring life to his botanical drawings and geographical designs. Alternatively it’s an easy 15km return cycle along the river Cisse to wine capital, Vouvray. Here you’ll find wine tasting possibilities and the option to visit Château de Valmer where King Charles VII once stayed.

At Chitenay
The C17 château at nearby Cheverny, with its wonderful white stone facade, is a popular day trip. The richness of its furnishings and antiques is incredible, and the gardens are superb. This château was used as a model for Moulinsart by the author of Tintin and a permanent exhibition is open for viewing. Alternatively keen cyclists can head for the magnificent château de Chambord - it’s a 50km round trip! Set in the heart of the huge Forêt de Boulogne, this C16 masterpiece appears straight from a fairytale, and reflects the lavish tastes of its original owner, King François I. Today, the surrounding park has been declared a national nature reserve, protecting all sorts of wildlife including deer, boar and eagles.
Chitenay to Chissay 31km/19mi
Head south past well-tended vines and sleepy hamlets surrounded by fields of sunflowers. Lunch perhaps on the terrace beside the fortified château of Fougérès-sur-Bièvre, before free-wheeling downhill to the River Cher where the charming old quarter of mediaeval Montrichard is huddled beneath the C11 keep. Lots of open air cafés and splendid half-timbered houses. A final flat cycle follows the Cher back to Château de Chissay for a well earned dip in the pool!
Day 7

St Ouen-les-Vignes to Chitenay 37km/23mi or 43km/27mi
Lovely peaceful cycling today with a choice of routes depending on how energetic you’re feeling! The shorter option takes you via the sleepy village of Limeray (lovely white church with impressive collection of statues) or you can head north through open countryside to Autreche – masses of wildlife so keep the binoculars handy! All cyclists then go on to Chaumont – the château here once belonged to Catherine de Medici and is quite spectacular. Between May and October, it hosts the International Garden Festival with a different theme each year. A final shady riverside stretch takes you via the pretty villages of Les Montils and Seur and on to Chitenay where you’ll spend the next two nights.
Day 6
Chitenay
Chissay to St Ouen-les-Vignes 27km/17mi
Gentle pedalling along the banks of the Cher will bring you first to the superb Château de Chenonceau with its famous arches majestically spanning the river. Described by Flaubert as floating “on air and water”, it’s arguably the most beautiful of all the Loire landmarks. Lunch here perhaps on the terrace of the Orangerie restaurant before heading off through the shady Amboise forest and on to Amboise. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to explore properly today as you can easily come back tomorrow. Your final stretch leads to the elegant village of St Ouen-les-Vignes and Jacques and Odile Arrayet’s bijou hotel beside the river. Odile is a professional sommelier, and Jacques artistic chef de cuisine, so you’re in for some treats here!

Few places can stir emotions quite as intensely as Umbria and, to visit here is to embark on a journey into a timeless world of sun-drenched landscapes, ancient hill villages and some of the friendliest people we’ve ever met. This 8-night independent cycling holiday combines scenic pedalling through olive groves, sunflower fields, vineyards and apricot orchards with the chance to explore some of the most fascinating towns and historic villages in the country. You’ll freewheel along the stately Roman Via degli Ulivi and follow in the footsteps of emperors at the sacred springs of Campello sul Clitunno. Highlights include the lovely hilltop wine village of Montefalco, ‘the balcony of Umbria’, and the fascinating historic city of Spoleto crammed with exciting Roman remains including Emperor Vespasian’s mother’s house, baths and mosaics. Of course, no trip here would be complete without spending time in magical Assisi. Be sure to visit St Francis’ Basilica with its beautifully ornate frescoes and his peaceful forest retreat on Monte Subasio where he’d stroll and preach to the birds. The hotels we’ve selected for this holiday are pretty special too, ranging from a stunningly restored ancient hamlet, set in its own manicured gardens, to a panoramic HHHH hotel in Spello with a gourmet restaurant and one of the most prestigious wine cellars we’ve ever stumbled upon! Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Italy for under 16’s. As we cannot provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own.

We recommend an additional two nights in Spoleto (making four nights in total). Spoleto has a wonderful history reflected in its architecture dating back to the Etruscans, but you can also take the train to Rome, or the bus to nearby Norcia - the bus ride alone is worth it! For those wanting to be more active, why not walk the well signed trail up Spoleto’s Monteluco. As you climb, the views of the Vale of Spoleto are certainly impressive. Or perhaps walk along the famous Spoleto - Norcia railway, now a peaceful Via Verde taking you on a journey through the magical Valnerina. Catalunya is a semi-autonomous area of Spain, steeped in culture, its traditions and festivals date back over thousands of years. Rich in mediaeval villages, highlights include prosperous Peratallada, peach coloured Pals and fashionable Begur. The rocky coastline is dotted with pretty fishing villages, crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches which are perfect to explore. This holiday is full of contrasts and variety and explores one of the most beautiful corners of Catalunya. It’s gentle cycling too, occasionally off-road, through olive groves, peach orchards and pine forests, and along pretty coastal paths. The landscape is gently rolling for the most part, making this an easy cycle and a relaxing holiday. The changing seasons bring white blossom in spring, sunflower yellow in summer and warm gold at harvest time. Fabulous coastal views and perfect beaches with aquamarine sea make this an inspirational area. You stay in a variety of hotels, all with pools, which have been hand-picked for their charm and character. The family run Hotel Garbi in the traditional fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell, is set on the hillside overlooking the sea. The stylish Hotel Sa Punta in Platja de Pals is set in attractive gardens and is within walking distance of the beach or you can cycle to nearby Begur. Two nights of the holiday are spent at the Castell d’Empordà, a magnificently restored C14 castle perched proudly on its outcrop, “ The scenery was just outside La Bisbal. Flanked by the majestic Alpine peaks of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the turquoise shoreline and pebbly beaches of Lake Constance are shared between three countries. The routes have been specifically designed by our local partner, Donau Touristik, and checked by our managers too. This is a region brimming with history and cultural highlights such as the fairytale castle in Meersburg, the flower decked palace in Konstanz and books dating back over 1,000 years in St Gallen’s UNESCO library. Not only is this itinerary easy level cycling on lakeside paths, the flexibility of our route notes is also a huge bonus. We give you fully detailed cycling notes to take you from each hotel to the next. If, however, you wish to shorten, or lengthen your route at any point, “ It was easy you simply hop on the local train or boat – taking your bike with you cycling with excellent – and tailor your journey to suit.

The Istrian Peninsula at the top of the Adriatic, (just below Trieste), was Italian until 1945 when it became part of Croatia. People still speak Italian here, and it is even taught in schools. In fact, Istria is sometimes known as ‘Croatia’s Tuscany’. It houses a treasure trove of antiquities, including a vast Roman amphitheatre in Pula, and exquisite Baroque and Byzantine basilicas in Rovinj and UNESCO Porec. Inland, tiny frescoed country churches and stone beehive huts called kazuna are sprinkled over oak forested countryside. Red-roofed villages with peeling shutters soak up the sun, producing olive oil and wines among the finest in the Mediterranean. This holiday explores Istria’s west coast. The first three nights are spent on Fazana’s pretty harbour, where fresh fish is landed on the dock opposite the hotel terrace. From here you can explore Pula, loop inland to Vodnjan (Istria’s ancient capital), and visit the amazing Brijuni Islands National Park offshore. You’ll then spend two nights in Rovinj, a coastal hilltop town of marbled, boutique-lined alleys, before the last two nights in Porec, where yachts line a waterfront of arty bars and restaurants. This trip is perfect for occasional cyclists who love laid back harbour-front dining, hotels of real charm, and varied cycling trails. Along the way, swimming in crystal clear seas every day is taken for granted, and electrifying sunsets are the hallmark of every evening. In Fazana, Rovinj and Porec with such an enticing choice of excellent Porec value restaurants, many of them on the waterfront, we have left the choice to you. Please note that cycling helmets are compulsory in Croatia for under 16’s. As we cannot provide these, we strongly recommend that you bring your own. Rovinj

Extending your stay
Day 2
For extra nights in Croatia we recommend staying in Porec. Call for details or see our website.
Pula and Brijuni National Park 20km/13mi
Pula is an easy warm up ride. There are mazes of marbled alleys to explore, many packed with Roman remains including a beautifully preserved amphitheatre from 27BC. Spend the day here or head back to take the boat to the Brijuni National Park - Roman villas, Byzantine villages, herds of deer and pine-fringed bays make for an amazing visit!
Day 3
Vodnjan Circuit 20km/12mi or 33km/20mi
Pedal inland through lemon, pine and olive trees to Istria’s ancient capital of Vodnjan, a sleepy village full of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Pick up some picnic supplies at the bakery, then head north for lunch amid kazuna, stone beehive style huts, near the C8 church of Sta Foska. Return along the coast passing remains of Roman baths on the shore. Back in Fazana, take a sunset stroll along the harbour.
Day 4
Fazana to Rovinj 38km/24mi
Head north through walnuts, plums, almonds, figs and vines. A steady, gentle ascent brings you to the small town of Bale, known as Castrum Vallis by the Romans who built a castle here to protect their salt trade. It’s then downhill to the sea and a winding coastal path under umbrella pines, bayhopping for 8km by crystal seas. Rovinj rivals Venice (just a day trip over the bay) for charm, where marbled alleyways are soft with candlelight and lively dining tables.
Day 5
Rovinj Circuit 12km/8mi
Lose yourself in art galleries and boutiques, find a sunny swimming cove, or even pop over to Venice for the day. Alternatively, enjoy a lazy northern loop passing ruined churches, olive groves and oxblood soils tilled by rusty tractors. On your return, enjoy a swim from the boat piers, then enjoy a sundowner on the shore. After sunset some bars put cushions on rocks and underwater lights shimmer as fishing boats return for the night.
Day 6
Rovinj to Porec 42km/26mi
Take sun-dappled back roads inland to the head of the Lim Fjord, an impressive wooded valley and today’s big challenge! Freewheel down to the base and ascend a 2km hill to the panoramic viewpoint on the other side. After lunch in one of many grill restaurants en route, head back towards the sea to meet the coast 10km south of Porec. You follow the water all the way to the pretty harbour and your waterfront hotel.
