London Plane Tree Gets The Chop

Allora is well known for its magnificent trees in the main street. Unfortunately there was a huge London Plane Tree that was unwell.

The tree stood at 31 Herbert Street, Allora – just south of the old Bank building.

The Southern Downs Regional Council brought in a specialised team including a qualified Arborist to check out the situation and hopefully salvage the tree.

However, borers were found to have attacked the tree. It was removed on Monday by Garwood Tree Services as the tree posed a safety risk to the community.

A plan will be undertaken to find a suitable replacement.

Plant Shop

The Hobby Shop I think I have said before in the Allora Advertiser that my brother William and me love making model aeroplanes, tanks and ships. We are always working on a model of some sort on our own or maybe with our granddad Dan Dan who also likes building models. Well my new favourite place is a hobby shop called Hobbyrama which is in Brisbane. Because it is in Brisbane we don’t get to go there a lot, but sometimes Mum or Dad take us to Brisbane and if we are lucky we stop in at Hobbyrama. When I started building models I thought that the model kits were the most important. But actually the most important thing is all the glues and paints and thinners which you have to use to make the models look right. So when we go to Hobbyrama I use my pocket money to buy these things. On Sunday my dad had to go to a meeting in Brisbane so William and me went down too and after the meeting dad took us to Hobbyrama which was great. I got some paints and thinners which come in tiny little cans about the size of a walnut. There are so many but I am trying to get the colours which you need for model planes like the ones from World War Two like Hurricanes and Spitfires and Messerschmit 109s. The photo is of me and William at Hobbyrama in one of the isles with all of the models. They are stacked up way over my head and there are so many that I can’t believe it. Also, I have to tell everyone the sad news that I have. Last week I wrote about Albert the Skinny Cat and how lovely he was. Well Albert was bitten by a brown snake two days later and he died just as mum arrived at the vet with him. My whole family was upset and Dad was away in Brisbane for Parliament so it was horrible for him too. Poor Albert was such a loving cat and we miss him.

Plans For Allora’s Two Museums

A proposed development application was submitted to the Southern Downs Regional Council late last year by the Allora & District Historical Society, for the relocation of two buildings on the original museum site on Drayton Street to the site of the old Shire Hall on Warwick Street Allora. Submissions closed on 20th February with none received relating to this application

The application seeks a Community Change of Use, being an extension to the existing Allora Museum Precinct at 53 Warwick Street, relocation of two buildings and preliminary

approval for building works.

The museum at 27 Drayton Street is located in the School of Arts Building which was originally Allora’s first Court House, built in 1866 in Raff Street. When the new Court House was built in 1884, the School of Arts purchased the building.

The move to 53 Warwick Street will give Allora one large Museum Precinct packed with history and memorabilia from this area.

The next big step for the Allora & District Historical Society is to obtain a grant for the cost of relocating the buildings from Drayton Street to Warwick Street.

will be on Tuesday 7th, visiting Deirdre’s new country garden at Spring Creek. She’s looking forward to advice from experienced Allora and district gardeners. Please be at 1 Drayton Street at 1.30 if you wish to travel with the group. New gardeners are always welcome. Bring a plate for afternoon tea. Yet another Blue Tree

Small grass fire at Talgai

On Monday night a small grass fire was reported on Bott Road and Dalyrmple Creek Road.

One Fire Unit was called but by the time it arrived the fire had been extinguished.

The Blue Tree Project is spreading like a weed through the eastern Downs, with yet another Blue Tree painted, this time at Deuchar.

The Blue Tree can be found on the corner of East Street (Warwick Allora Road) and Marrinans Road.

It was painted by Clifton’s Emma Crewes and Wendy Bailey with paint donated

by the Get Chopped Pub at Greenmount.

Other blue trees can be found on King Street in Clifton, the New England Highway at Cambooya and Gatton Clifton Road at Fordsdale

The Blue Tree Project’s mission is to help raise awareness of mental health struggles by encouraging communication.

Home Owners Concerned For Large Grass Fire

Allora Is Ready For Those Magnificent Heavy Horses

One hundred horses will be featuring at this years festival on 18th and 19th March.

Two full days to enjoy the demonstrations of working horses as well as breed and heritage displays.

There will be a top line-up of breeds such as Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire, Draught Horse, Gypsy Cob and Drum Horses. There’ll be added exhibits this year of rare breeds including Highland Cattle and miniature goats.

You’ll find more details on the Darling Darling

Heavy Horse Festival website on - www. heavyhorsefestival.com.au or email ddheavyhorses@ gmail.com

On Monday morning a grass fire started in a paddock on Elphinstone Road Allora. Units from Allora’s Auxiliary Fire Brigade supported by Allora’s Rural Fire Brigade and Massie Fire Brigade arrived to fight the blaze.

It’s estimated that about 8 acres of grass burnt in close vicinity to a number of houses.

Home owners were using hoses to help fight the fire. It’s believed a spark from a lawn mower hitting a rock started the fire.
