Funnel-Web Spider Enjoying The Wet

This Funnel-web was found in a Goomburra Valley garden - so a word to the wise - watch out while pulling weeds. Great photos taken by Corie Ross of Longneck Farm.

The jury is still out - is it a Monteith funnelweb, found near Killarney or a Toowoomba Funnel-web, the most common species in South-east Queensland?

The Allora Advertiser would love to hear from readers who may know the answer.

Response from SOUTHERN DOWNS

REGIONAL COUNCIL to JOHN ELLWOOD’S

Letter to the Editor - 19 October.

A Council spokesperson has supplied this response to The Allora Advertiser -

In recent weeks, there has been a number of enquiries and correspondence regarding an earth levee upstream of the Allora township on the Dalrymple Creek. Evidence suggests the levee is not newly constructed, however investigations are ongoing.

The Dalrymple Creek hydrological flood plain is a dynamic system subject to many influences, primarily the intensity of rain fall events.

Council has taken the matter seriously and is using a number of assessment tools to review the situation to date. From the information available via hydrological modelling, aerial photographs and recent flood photographs, no conclusive result has been obtained. The present detailed hydrological modelling of the catchment does not extend upstream to the alleged works site. Historical state archive photographs show patterns of land use from the late 1960s to 1970s consistent with the present day land use patterns. This has presented no conclusive evidence on the alleged detrimental impacts of high flow events and changes to flood plain performance.

In an endeavour to provide a more reliable assessment of the Dalrymple Creek flood impacts, Council will undertake flood mapping for Allora with Federal funding from the Preparing Australian Communities program. Council is currently developing the Request For Tender for this project and it is expected to award the tender early in the new year.

Until the additional hydrological modelling is completed, no conclusive evidence is available to suggest any dramatic shift in risk for the local residents.

Many take advantage of workshop

A free workshop hosted in Clifton last week by Condamine Catchment Management Association (CCMA) provided attendees with the tools to secure grants for their groups.

Held at the All Saints Anglican church hall, a total of 28 people from Clifton, Allora and as far as Warwick attending the workshop, including landholders.

CCMA secretary MaryLou Gittins said the session provided attendees with the guidance of having the correct language to use when applying for grants.

She stressed the importance of adapting an idea to the place where the grant comes from, whether it be local, state or federal government or corporate or philanthropic group.

She said the workshop helped to build knowledge on concepts such as community resilience and strengthening capacity.

CCMA aims to provide a sustainable future for the Condamine community and catchment through faster cooperation and coordination.

Littleproud’s Budget Reaction

The Nationals leader and member for Maranoa David Littleproud says Labor has broken the hearts of Maranoa locals in its first Budget.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised if he won government, there would be “no one held back, no one left behind”.

But in Labor’s first Budget, Maranoa locals have been held back and left behind in three key areas - cost of living, childcare and infrastructure.

The COST OF LIVING crisis is set to get worse under the Budget.

Mr Littleproud said drastic increases in grocery bills were man-made by Labor and the Budget would make the average Maranoa family worse off by at least $2000 by Christmas.

“Groceries are eight per cent higher, not just because of natural disasters, but also by a Labormade disaster in scrapping the Ag Visa. Supply has been slashed because farmers and processors are only working at around 60 per cent capacity, which has put upward pressure at the checkout for families in Maranoa,” Mr Littleproud said.

Retail electricity prices are already up 20 per cent this year

and predicted to increase by a further 30 per cent next year, while the $275 promised by Labor to reduce electricity bills is now gone.

“Interest rates have already gone up and are predicted go up further under Labor, which is ripping hundreds of dollars out of households each month.

CHILDCARE - Labor’s Budget has clearly turned its back on families desperate to find childcare places in Maranoa.

While the Treasurer announced $4.7 billion in childcare measures, he couldn’t create one new additional childcare place in Maranoa, leaving families in the local area no better off.

“Labor has put the needs of Maranoa families last – refusing to increase availability of desperatelyneeded childcare centres in our regional communities.

INFRASTRUCTURE - Labor has also put an axe to funding for roads, rail and dams in regional and rural communities.

Programs cut include the Energy Security and Regional Development Plan, Regional Accelerator Program, Community Development Grants Program and Building Better Regions Fund.

At least $4.6 billion has been

ripped out of regional and rural water plans. Labor has put an axe to Maranoa, deferring funding of $899.5 million over four years for projects including the Emu Swamp dam and pipeline.

The funding for Emu Swamp Dam, previously pledged by the former Coalition Government, was to construct a 12GL dam on the Severn River near Stanthorpe and a 117-kilometre pipeline distribution network.

“This project was vital because it would have increased the availability of water by up to 40 per cent in the region.

“Taking away the funding takes away confidence and certainty for

farmers to expand agriculture production. It will especially impact growers of apples, stone fruit, vegetables, herbs and grapes.

“Maranoa locals are facing a cost-of-living crisis and taking money out of our area will hurt the

Amelia in the park

Last weekend Dad took Amelia to the park in town and William and I went with them. My brother and I really love playing with Amelia and because she loves being outside it is even more fun for her to be in the playground in the park. This was the first time that Amelia has gone down a slippery slide and she was really excited. Dad held onto her but she loved it and made this kind of squealing sound when she went down. After that William went on this big swinging basket thing with Amelia and she went “goooooo, gooooooo” so obviously she likes that one too. And there is also a kind of octopus ride on a big spring and Amelia stood on it and held on tight and she was really happy. Amelia is almost 11 months old now and she knows how to clap her hands and wave and she’s doing wees in the potty too so she is really growing up quickly now. Soon I think Amelia will be walking because she can stand up and push this toy walking thing on wheels along. Sometimes she says “did-dar” which is for dad and “mar-mar-mar” for mum but only sometimes. I think Amelia will be walking on her own by Christmas, and maybe even saying more words. When William was one year old he pointed to me and said “bwada” which meant brother. I hope Amelia does the same thing for me soon. The picture is of Amelia at the

WEEK 9 - Finally spring weather is upon us, bringing with it hundreds of suicidal beetles hatching on the green making play a little bumpy. With the music pumping, thank you Ryan, it was game on.

Much jubilation on Rink 1 with Ty on fire as Skip for the first time for Railway Hotel giving Patto’s team a bit of a flogging and the girls from Beers, Bowls & Bitches downing Pig Lures, was it a quiet trip home in the car Ashleigh with your father. Russell please wait

for the game to finish before removing bowls from the rink.

John E had a winning streak in the raffles with 3 prizes, other winners were Danny, Bryce, Josh T and Glen. Thank you to our sponsors, Railway Hotel, Allora Sports Club, Allora Butchery and Right 1st Time Cleaning.

Dewy had a chance for a draw in the Jackpot for the $160 but no luck so $180 next week, a big incentive to buy more raffle tickets. Thank you Tony Morris Tiling for your sponsorship.

Lucky toucher winners were Russell, Simmo, Jackson, Ty, Dave Smith and Chris B. Thank you Right 1st Time Cleaning for the chocolates.

Winners on the night Doesn’t Matter (thank you to Josh T & Josh D, you played very well) and Losers Generation Gap.

Thank you to all our helpers on the night. Team captains don’t forget to organise subs if they are needed. See you all back

again next Tuesday night for another great game of social bowls, hope you all back a winner in the Melbourne Cup.

Allora Golf Notes

In absolutely splendid conditions on Friday afternoon we saw a field of 19 players contest the weekly Duck Run. Winner on the day with 20 points was Ty in a countback from Duke. Nick won the approach, Errol the long putt and Duke the nearest the pin.

Sunday the golf course was in almost perfect condition for the Allora Butchery four ball best ball competition. Winners were John and Russell Sparksman with 45 points from Macca and Mick on 44 in a countback from Nick and Jack. Great to see Mick and Jack back having a hit

in the Sunday comp. Also great to see Ray and Doreen back after a couple of weeks off basking in the glory of their Allora Advertiser Volunteer of the Month Award. Congratulations and well done to you both - richly deserved.

Next Sunday will be the Railway Hotel Monthly Mug. We still have three first round matches in the Matchplay which need to be played by next Sunday.

Also a reminder about our Open Day on 20th November. We will have two shotgun starts, 7.30 am and 11.30 am. Cost $25 which includes a BBQ lunch.
