It’s been a very special time for Arch after celebrating 75 years of marriage last month with the love of his life, Daphne.
Both Arch and Daphne now reside at the Allora Homestead and enjoy the comforts, great staff and fellowship of other residents.
Looking back - Arch was born in Glen Innes on 2nd May 1923.
At the age of 5 his family of Mum, Dad and 6 children moved to Brookstead. It took 2 days as the roads were unsealed and top speed was 30 miles an hour. There he rode a horse about 5 and a half miles to school.
Following the sale of the property, Arch then went to Dalby State School for about 6 months before the family relocated to Pikedale, Stanthorpe on a sheep property of 3,300 acres. Living 22 miles out of Stanthorpe called for correspondence schooling.
Arch arrived in Allora on his 12th Birthday where he attended the Upper Spring Creek School.
On leaving school he helped clear and fence
country to enable crops to be grown. It was hard work back then as machinery wasn’t as it is today.
Arch was a partner in an ice run in Toowoomba and also worked at The Toowoomba Foundry.
The love of the land saw them return to Allora to share-farm a dairy farm.
They then bought their own farm in Joel Park Road and established a sheep and grain farm where they lived until retirement.
Arch was highly involved in his church and Indoor Bowls, these days still very interested in watching Tennis and Footy.
Longevity — He’d probably say A Hard Days

New Members for Allora Medical Support Group
For over twelve years Allora Medical Support Group have been ensuring Allora and surrounding community has a medical facility locally. It is only through the generous support of the local community and a number of key visionary people that the Allora clinic is here.
Recently Gary Wilson (the chair of the current committee) along with the AMSG committee warmly welcomed Steven Harrop and Kay Jensen at the February meeting who answered the invitation in our last newspaper story. Dr Peter Thomas was welcomed onto the committee at our April meeting.
Some of you may remember when the medical
practice started up in the Donovan building. As per the Allora Historical Society Inc (another great community group) this building was probably built in the 1860’s as a small house for Daniel and Margaret Leggatt. In the 1880’s a small shop was added to the front and operated by Margaret Leggatt until it closed in 1891. The building was then occupied by several different businesses including a photographer, jeweller, milliner and a plumber.
In 1895 Patrick Donovan started Donovan’s Auction Mart in Allora. Hence the Donovan building came into its name. We note also that the building has been heritage listed by the Southern Downs Regional Council.
The Donovan building has seen a few different looks over the last ten years as a variety of businesses have rented the building. Currently Meghan & Co has been operating at the
Donovan building. The funds received from the rental of the two buildings go towards maintenance and development plus the ever increasing insurance invoice.
“We are very proud of the health facilities the Allora Medical Support Group administers on behalf of the Allora community and look forward to continuing to do so into the future.” Stated Jon Constable Vice chair (past chair of many years).

Country Lifestyle
Motorists may experience delays of up to 45 minutes as road works take place along the Cunningham Highway at Cunningham’s Gap.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and contractor McIlwain began stage 1 of their reconstruction project in January, which includes including slope survey activities to identify high-risk areas.
The survey work undertaken to date has identified areas of the uphill slope that may require some degree of scaling or stabilisation to reduce the risk of rockfalls.
To safely carry out the work, intermittent stop/slow traffic changes have been implemented.
Since mid-April, from
6am to 6pm, from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), stop/ slow traffic conditions will be required for slope stabilisation works behind the safety barriers.
Road users may experience delays of up to 45 minutes during this time.
Roadside electronic signage will be located at key points along the road network to advise motorists of the expected delays.
During night works, from 8pm to 4am, traffic will be under stop/slow conditions for pavement works.
Road users may experience delays of up to 15 minutes when travelling through Cunninghams Gap during this time.
Weather or site conditions can impact these work schedules.
Stage 2 reconstruction works will involve the installation of rockfall protection systems, Gap Creek Bridge works, installation of slope monitoring technology and completing works around the Main Range National Park car park.
Stage 2 works are expected to commence in late 2023, subject to weather and site conditions.
Due to the complexity of the recovery work and to ensure the safety of the workers and the public, there may be a requirement for occasional short-term, temporary closures of the Cunningham Highway in the future.
If short-term closures are required, TMR will provide advance notice.

Southern Downs Road safety advocate recognised
Community road safety warrior David Kemp is vocal in the conversation for improving safety conditions on Southern Downs roads and has been a key player in campaigning for a number of significant upgrades across the region.
Known to many simply as Kempy, his advocacy for the community was recently acknowledged by Southern Downs Regional Council through its Volunteer Recognition Program.
In nominating him for the accolade, Councillor Cynthia McDonald applauded Kempy’s unwavering commitment to do right by the community.
“I first met Kempy during one of our region’s worst droughts. He worked tirelessly to assist the community at every opportunity and he was involved in fundraising and distributing food and water to those in need.
“As the President and Vice-Chairman of the Warwick & District Road Safety Advisory Committee, Kempy also flies the flag for improving road safety on the Southern Downs.
“Perhaps one of his most significant achievements was the successful lobbying for critical improvements to the Eight Mile intersection which resulted in the Federal Government funding upgrades to the tune of $30m.” Councillor McDonald said.

Allora’s Own Pictorial Bird Guidebook
On Sunday 23rd April, the Allora Landcare Group (ALG) officially launched the second edition of their book
‘A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of Allora Mountain Flora and Fauna Reserve’. The event was held in perfect autumn weather at the reservoir level on the Mountain, with attendees coming from Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Warwick and locally. Invited guests included Councillor Marco Gliori and his wife Julie, who have been good supporters of the ALG and
frequent visitors to the Reserve. Marco spoke of the importance to protect and preserve such significant assets as the Reserve, and gave a rendition of one of his bush poems, The Million Star Hotel, to great acclamation.
Frank Coman, a CSIRO scientist based in Brisbane was the photographer for the book, and ALG thanks him again for his generosity in making the photos available. He spoke about the new bird species on the
Reserve he keeps finding, and including these resulted
in the new edition enlarging to accommodate them. The number is now well over 100. Frank is confident there will be more to be found. He answered questions on bird migration, habitat and hybridisation and signed books.
Following a very good smoko, there was a tour of the higher mountain conducted by ALG member Rob Bell along walking tracks recently maintained by women from the Warwick Work Camp. We thank them for their efforts which are greatly appreciated.
We also thank Mary-Lou Gittins, Chair of Queensland Water and LandCarers for her support of this event.
The books may be purchased for $10 per copy plus postage from the ALG via their email; alloralandcare@gmail.com

Dear Dr Chalmers,
GPO 5341 Sydney, NSW 2000

Dear Premier Perrottet
There’s a crisis in our country you can fix in your first budget, at no extra cost. With the stroke of a pen you could help secure the future of critical regional news services, using money already allocated in the budget. All you need to do is allocate a fairer percentage of the federal government’s advertising budget to local and regional news services, rather than spending almost all of it with corporate capital city media and foreign-owned digital platforms (which don’t produce any content or employ any journalists).
This can be achieved by simply adopting the Victorian Govt policy that mandates a weekly full page government advertisement in every regional and community paper.
Michelle Rowlands announced a campaign promise of $15m of newsprint costs that we faced at the time. Whilst this is welcomed by structural issues we face.
Local and regional newspapers connect more than 80% of the country, but they get almost 0% of the government advertising spend.
by the Premier of Victoria (see attached) with a policy that buy a full page advertisement in every regional paper every week
In an era where false news spreads faster on social media than the truth does, trusted local news services reach more regional Australians than any other medium. And unlike other media, every government dollar spent with a local newspaper is also an investment in regional journalism jobs.
By way of introduction, I am the Managing Director of Australian Community independent regional publisher. ACM has over 140 titles around the country. In newspapers like the Newcastle Herald, Illawarra Mercury, Wagga Daily Advertiser Leader. Additionally, we publish 47 weekly titles from the far south in Batemans Bay also have the St.George and Sutherlands Leaders in our stable of papers. The reason for writing to you is to seek your support for our industry and the Regional newspapers are the lifeblood of their towns and cities. Sadly, due to the rise increased cost pressures many titles in NSW have had to close and many more are on
During the recent federal election campaign, Michelle Rowlands announced a campaign grant funding to address the 80% rise in newsprint costs that we faced at the time. the industry it is a short term solution to ongoing structural issues we face.

Association that represent another 27 publications in NSW and, together, proposed policy announcement across our respective mastheads and available to meet with you at any time to discuss this important
A recent parliamentary inquiry recommended that a minimum of 20% of government print advertising should be placed with regional news services. A recent study conducted by Deakin University recommended the same thing. In fact, the Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, has been advocating for more regional newspaper advertising for many years.
This shouldn’t be controversial.
A more meaningful solution has been enacted by the Premier of Victoria (see guarantees that the Vic state government will buy a full page advertisement in every of the year.
We believe a similar policy could be an election promise for NSW Labor that does three - provides certainty for regional publishers and the jobs they support - provides the NSW Government with a valuable communications tool in the - moves away from the need for government grants.
We know there may be bigger budget issues, but this small policy change would be a simple and fair solution to a growing problem for regional Australia. A policy that ensures weekly federal government advertising is placed in regional newspapers would be great news for the country. And it won’t cost you a cent.
Yours sincerely,
We are working with the Country Press Association that represent another 27 publications we would be enthusiastically covering this proposed policy announcement across their websites.

GRDC releases Dispersive Soil Manual
Not getting soil management right could be costing some Queensland and New South Wales grain growers more than $1000 per hectare per year in yield losses according to new research.
The new ‘bible’ for grain growers, agronomists, researchers and farm financial advisers offers practical ways to diagnose soil constraints, develop amelioration plans to manage problems and assess the potential economic costs and benefits.
Dispersive soils are widespread throughout Queensland and NSW, characteristically they become waterlogged when wet, very hard when dry and often have a poor ability to accept and store water.
GRDC sustainable cropping systems manager –north, Dr John Rochecouste says research showed that soil amelioration which resulted in crop yield gains could translate to major improvements in profit for
grain growers.
“Gypsum-lime applications on highly dispersive soils have been known to deliver crop yield improvements of up to $5500 per hectare over a five-year period, based on 2022 grain prices. So, these are practices that have significant economic benefit,” Dr Rochecouste says.
“I would encourage growers to review the case studies in the manual, relevant to their region. This research has proved that soil amelioration has the potential to remove the yield gap that consistently arises in the case of dispersive soils. For example, we have looked at case studies where gypsum treatments on dispersive soil resulted in $1800/ha to $2300/ha net value profits after five years.
“In most instances, return on investment data also indicated strong shortterm gains from gypsum (2.5t/h) and interestingly, small repeated 2.5t/ ha gypsum doses gave
bigger profits than one dose of 10t/ha gypsum. With high grain prices, the estimated payback period or amelioration was often less than a year.”
Dr Rochecouste says that the manual was compiled so that growers could understand the potential costs and profit associated with dispersive soil treatments.
“Thanks to this manual, we have a much better idea of what works and doesn’t work, and the treatment types that give the highest return for growers in Queensland and NSW growing regions,” Dr
Rochecouste says. For more information or to read the Dispersive Soil Manual please visit the GRDC website.

Wattles Under 17’s shine in big day out at Tenterfield
double for the more than competitive Wattles league tag ladies, the honours went Tenterfield’s way 16 – 10 at full time.
Under 15 team who racked up a 44 – 22 win over Tenterfield.
Thanks to a six tries to two advantage the Hamblyn Builders Wattles Under 17 outfit served up a convincing 30 – 10 win among the highlights of last weekend’s fixtures at Tenterfield.
Wattles Warriors junior teams headed to the New England Tablelands on Saturday for their second Round of Warwick & District junior Rugby League matches against the Tenterfield Tigers at historical Rugby League Park.
Under 17 touchdowns were shared between Hamish Gartery, Billy Peardon, Darcy Betts, Byron Joppich, Corey Gascoyne and Bryce Stewart, who was also on target with three conversions.
Club Hotel Under 17 Ladies League Tag - Despite a tremendous effort by speedy winger Billy-Leigh Gorringe who ran in an impressive try
Stephanie Lyons was successful with a lone Wattles penalty goal, in a match with just a converted try the difference.
Coach Dan Wallis commended his players on an inspiring effort, especially their second half when they held the home side scoreless.
All in Electrical Under 15 Ladies League TagIt was a tough day at the office for Wattles Under 15 LLT team, finishing behind Tenterfield 40 – 4.
The girls in green and gold never gave up at any stage, showing they are a better team than the score suggests.
Alex Gilmore was strong as always at the back & scored Wattles only try.
“The girls are coming along nicely with their best footy still in front of them” said coach George Berry.
Drayton Medical Centre Under 15 - Coach Tom Duggan was more than impressed with the performance of his entire
“They were challenged to start the match with intensity, and they delivered, keeping well on top of the home town Tigers.”
Wattles attack was very impressive and much improved from their preseason trials form.
Nutrien Harcourts
Clifton Under 13 - Wattles Under 13’s clashed with a determined Tenterfield outfit coming away with a 24 – 10 success.
But after a positive start to the game the young Warriors lost their way to an extent.
They showed resilience though to tough out the second half, scoring two late tries to come away with the win.
Clifton Auto Ag Repairs
Under 11 - Despite a sterling effort across the team, and a classy Jackson McMillan performance that included a try double, the home town Tigers were just a little too much of a challenge for the Under 11 Warriors.
The consistent Bryce Bateman was again impressive leading his forwards and was rewarded with a touchdown.
Bryce, Levi Zadow and
Jackson Shannon were all successful with goals in a gutsy green and gold effort that bristled with team improvement.
Dalrymple Landscape
Haulage Pty Ltd Under 9 - The Chris Ryan coached Under 9’s posted a deserving positive result, with all players shining especially William Ehrlich with his fine defence and Rhys Gascoyne’s four touch downs.
The young Warriors had the opportunity to kick for goals last Saturday which they enjoyed.
Willett Electrical Under 7 - Under 7 coach Jared Gault was full of praise for his team’s “fantastic game” against the Tigers.
“They all played very well as a team in attack and defence.”
On Saturday’s performance all of the young Warriors were considered players of the match.
Bye Round This Weekend
This weekend is ‘feet up time’ for the young Warriors with a Warwick & District JRL Round 3 bye, before taking in the MIT (MillmerranInglewood-Texas) Jets the following Saturday in Round 4.

Burns demands winning results against Danes
The Dane’s have a single win from their three games, their most recent outing where they walloped Oakey 40 – 14 at Club Pittsworth.
After a weekend break the ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ Wattles Warriors top grade team are fully focused on returning to the winner’s podium after their local derby clash with neighbouring Toowoomba Rugby League club the Pittsworth Danes at Platz Oval on Saturday.
The Warriors have just a single fixture success from three outings since the season got underway, a second-round win over Southern Suburbs and losses against the Dalby Diehards and Warwick Cowboys.
Coach Travis Burns isn’t taking the Danes lightly, nor should he with them perched above his Warriors on the Hutchinson Builders A Grade premiership ladder. Pittsworth are coming off a healthy 30 – 16 last start win over the Oakey Bears, and will have a spring in their step as they run on to Platz Oval.
Tony Morris Tiling Reserve Grade - Balanced at the head of the TRL Clive Berghofer Land Sales reserve grade ladder, Wattles undefeated reserve graders can be considered a healthy wager to continue on their winning way against Pittsworth.
Coach Tony Morris has certainly stepped off to an impressive start in his coaching career, with an undefeated record after the pre-season and three TRL rounds.
Black Toyota, Warwick Under 19 - After a tough night against the Dalby Diehards back in Round 1, the Cameron Hamblin coached Wattles colts have been on winner’s street for their last two outings.
Given the team comparisons against the Danes, the Warriors will start favourites and hopefully continue their success.
Team mentor and fivetime Wattles club Player of the Year Cameron Hamblin isn’t coming in to any suggestion of the result being in the bag though, “the team has a great opportunity to cement another win but Pittsworth won’t be giving anything away as always. We will need to be committed and willing to earn it.”
