Catholic Education Week Launch in Toowoomba - students volunteered to attend and represent Allora St Patrick’s School. Mili W. and Douglas E. with the Principal Keith Blaikie.
Catholic schools across Queensland celebrated their community spirit during Education Week - the theme being Communities of Faith, Hope and Love. The official launch was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Toowooomba last Tuesday, July 26 and hosted by Diocese of Toowoomba
Catholic Schools Office at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Allora’s St Patrick’s School was represented by the Principal Keith Blaikie and students Douglas E., Mili W. and Maggie P. Dr Pat Coughlan, Executive Director Catholic Schools said Toowoomba
Catholic schools represented a microcosm of Catholic education in Queensland. “Some of our schools serve primarily Indigenous communities, others serve agricultural and rural communities and we also have schools serving those students who have
disengaged from mainstream education,” said Dr Coughlan. “It was wonderful to showcase the rich tapestry of Toowoomba Catholic schools during the launch event and sharing the wonderful work of our communities of faith, hope and love.”

Southern Downs Poultry Club recently staged their popular Annual Poultry Show and Treaty at the Allora Showgrounds. Exhibitors and interested parties came from many parts of Queensland as well
as New South Wales. In fact there were more entries than expected so extra cages were needed. The judges were very impressed with the quality of entries as well as the cleanliness of the cages and the pavilion.

Varroa-targeting pesticide under development
Amid Australia’s first Varroa Destructor Mite outbreak, the grower-owned research and development corporation Hort Innovation has joined forces with the University of Sydney to develop a world-first hormone-based pesticide that is safe for honey bees but fatal to Varroa mite. As part of the $1.2M initiative, scientists will create molecules that selectively bind to and interfere with the hormone receptors of Varroa mite and fellow honey bee pest, small hive beetle, interfering with reproduction, development, and behaviour. The target receptors are absent from vertebrates, making the pesticide safe for other beneficial animals in the environment. Hort Innovation chief executive Brett Fifield said the project aims to help safeguard Australian honey bees and will have positive impacts to horticulture production. “Thirty per cent of global agricultural production is reliant on pollination by honey bees,” he said. “And across the board, this production is currently under threat from pests including the Varroa mite and the
small hive beetle.” “The development of a commercial pesticide that is fatal to Varroa mite and small hive beetle, but not honey bees, will lead to a worldwide market opportunity to export Australian-based technology. It will also offer a significant step toward protecting global agricultural systems that are reliant on honey bee pollination.” Varroa mites cause weakness in honey bee colonies by feeding on larvae and pupae. They can also live on adult honey bees, transmitting viruses. Chemical control methods exist but research shows Varroa mites globally are building up tolerances and some treatments aren’t suitable for the Australian environment. Small hive beetles are a major pest in the warm and humid regions of of Australia. The larval stage causes damage to honeycomb, destroying brood and stored honey and pollen, resulting in honey fermentation and colonies becoming ‘slimed out’. Currently, Hort Innovation is investing more than $61M into research and
development projects that aim to enhance and protect pollination security in Australia – from work with
flies and native bees that are not affected by Varroa mite to mechanical methods of pollination.

Days for Girls – Allora and District update
Days for Girls Allora and district’s gathering in June saw the ladies undertaking a variety of tasks to get the components required for a possible trip to Griffith Uni for a packing day as part of the uni’s volunteer program. On 20 July two of the Allora and district DfG group gave a presentation to Rose City chapter of the Probus group. Approximately 30 plus Probus members attended. Heather Goonan from DfG gave a brief history of DfG internationally and in Australia and how long Allora and district group
had been going and explained what is done each month. It was an attentive audience and there were completed kits for audience members to look through. Members of the audience then asked a series of questions. Also in June, executive members of the Allora and district DfG group did a trip to Tradways in Staplyton to replenish much needed supplies of flannelette, thread and cotton materials. The group also supplied some kits to the local ‘Share the Dignity’ group as part of an ongoing program to assist any women and girls in need, no matter where. Allora and district DfG group would like to thank those people who have personally and/or anonymously donated monetary
funds to the group. It has been a problematic year with many functions being cancelled so all support is most welcome. Winners of the Adventure board raffle was Dennis winning the Warwick Gliding Club, air experience flight voucher and Alison C winning the Downs Explorer Railway trip and meal voucher. Thanks you for all people who brought tickets in the raffle and a big thank you to the Warwick Gliding Club and Downs Explorer Railway. As always the group is requesting donations of: new ladies knickers, small hotel style soaps, new face washers, new 100% cotton (non-stretch) material or monetary donations so please think of us, if you are doing a
cupboard clean out. Items can be dropped into Allora True Value Hardware store or Bryson’s Florist Warwick marked as Days for Girls. If dropping items in please text, phone or email contacts below so that we know to pick things up as not all executive members live in town. Monetary donations over $2 are tax deductible and can be transferred to: Allora Days for Girls, BSB 064032 Acc: 10127292. Items can also be dropped off at gathering times. For more information about DfG contact any member of the Executive Team - Heather Goonan Mobile 0434 907 904, Lenore Wissemann Mobile 0428 973 432, Shirley Cornhill and Kaylene Williams or email: alloraqld@ daysforgirls.org

Green Machine Inspires Wattles Victory
An inspiring performance by fullback Jackson Green guided local league heroes the Stillwater Pastoral Company Wattles Warriors to a 25 – 6 victory in Sunday’s much anticipated clash with joint top of the table combatants and Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy mid-season champions the Highfields Eagles at a cool, breezy Platz Oval in front of a sell-out crowd. In what is highlighted as Green’s best game of this year, he was named Lee Group Electrical Player of the TRL’s Round 15 after engineering a mighty performance from the last line in cahoots with dynamic halfback Matt Duggan. Green was rewarded with two tries, the second in the sixteenth minute of the second stanza a gem as Duggan off loaded right and wide finding the fullback racing in to a yawning gap and skirting defence to score for Wattles to secure an 18 – 6 lead. The home side ran up a 12 – 0 advantage by the 26-minute mark courtesy of Green’s initial try in the first stanza and another by hard working back-rower Tyson Stevens. The Eagles player/ coach Jarrod Lee touched down minutes prior to the break to put his side on the scoreboard trailing 12 – 6 at half time. The game erupted on a couple of occasions in the latter stages with tempers flaring resulting in fiery Eagles forward Darcy Maroske being sent-off eight minutes from full time, after a previous sin bin spell. Wattles had more than an
edge on the Eagles though in the final forty minutes with a try by Kai WilliamsonDuggan mid-half and a Matt Duggan field goal in the latter stages sealing the game and reinforcing the Warriors shared standing at the top of the Hutchinson Builders Toowoomba Rugby League A Grade premiership ladder with the Gatton Hawks. Wattles captain/coach Travi Burns was thrilled with what he rated as his side’s best effort this season. He was impressed across the park but rated back-rower Brendon McBryde and centre Nick Van Der Poel exceptional given their recent return from lengthy injury spells. However, as a result of Sunday’s clash, Burns himself is under an injury cloud along with veteran lock Dale Perkins and front-rower Mitch Koina heading in to next Sunday’s important contest against the Southern Suburbs Tigers in Toowoomba. With three fixtures remaining against Southern Suburbs, Goondiwindi and Warwick in the run to the final’s series, Burns is focused on three successes if the
Warriors are to secure a firstgrade minor premiership. Off field on Sunday the Wattles club enjoyed much success with their inaugural Wattles Warriors ‘Old Boys and Supporters’ Day that featured the stars of stage and screen from the Toowoomba Rugby League Premierships sides of 1997 (A Grade) and 1992 (Reserve & Third Grades). Wattles 25 (Jackson Green 2, Tyson Stevens, Kai Williamson-Duggan tries; Matt Duggan 4 goals & field goal) defeated Highfields 6. Reserve Grade - The Tony Morris Tiling Warriors rolled the mid-season championship reserve grade President’s Cup title holders Highfields to snatch top spot on the Clive Berghofer Land Sales premiership ladder after a convincing 30 – 12 victory. It was the third time the two teams had met in 2022 with Wattles finally earning the honours on Sunday. Co-captain/coach Garth Lonergan rated the result highly, but we “had to dig deep and back our defence in the last fifteen minutes when Highfields got back on top.”
“It’s certainly great to be sitting at the top of the ladder, but staying there will be tough with the games coming up.” Veteran front-rower Aaron Schied, centre Darby Peardon and five-eight Joe Morris were among those to shine in a gutsy result. The Warriors dominated the first half to lead 20 – 6 at the break, before centre Lachlan Henry touched down to seal the result in the final minute. Wattles 30 (Mitchell Duff, Warren Draper, Joe Morris, Tom Morris, Lachlan Henry tries; Tom Morris 5 goals) defeated Highfields 12. Under 19 - Highfields were too strong across the paddock for the Warriors Under 19 colts on the end of a 50 – 6 loss. Front-rower John Lazzaroni crossed for Wattles sole try, converted by halfback Matthew Wilson. In a challenging contest the Black Toyota, Warwick Wattles Warriors were well served by the efforts of centre Jacob Meddleton, front-rower Marley Tunstead and hooker Lachlan Meacle. Glyn Rees

Warrior Juniors Host Goondiwindi
Under 7 - In a proud lead in to Saturday’s contest against Goondiwindi the Willett Electrical Under 7’s were presented with their tackle ready certificates on Thursday afternoon at training. It was a positive group of youngsters that took the field in their last home game of the season. Both teams very eager to play, and despite some hefty defence from their opposition the young Warriors finished the game with their heads held high. Henry Ferguson, James Patterson, Archie Moore took some especially big hits but like the Warriors they are they got back up and kept playing. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though with Henry Ferguson, James Patterson and Chaz Daley on fire with some inspiring tackling. George Mullen and Buddy Turner are making progress each time they take the field, with coach Shadai Daley commenting “it’s great to see them enjoying the game”. Under 8 - Wattles Railway Hotel, Allora Under 8’s impressed coach Tim Johnson with their skill improvement and dedication. Joint Man of the Match honours went to Henry Johnson and Thomas Saville for their effort and team play. Both ran strongly, were busy and directed play well as first receivers. William Erhlich was back to his bruising best with his defence while Hunter Ryan carved up with some great stepping.
“It was great to see our little mate Joseph Ramsey come to watch our last home game and receive his #12 jersey” said coach Johnson. Under 9 - In the face of a much bigger Goondiwindi opposition the Wattles Dalrymple Landscape Haulage Under 9’s can be proud of their efforts. “The whole team stepped up to the challenge” according to coach George Berry. Ayden Willett, Sophia Voss, James Mason, Alex Wolski & Liam Hoey played their best games of the season. While Noah Schwenke, Flynn McInnes, Harry Jones, Rylee Boom & Saxon Darlington were once again solid throughout the contest. William Berry and Malakai Darlington in the second half particularly, were brutal in defence making well timed hard tackles. Under 10 - It was a bustling result reversal for the Under 10 Black Toyota, Warwick Warriors who struggled against Goondiwindi in their previous encounter. But it was the Warriors day on Saturday, and while Levi Zadow (2) and Jack McMillan crossed for touchdowns, Mick Willett scored a scorcher in the final moments running half the field including a chip kick to regather and score. Coach Russell McMillan was more than pleased, “they all played very well.” Beau Henry regained his form after recent illness while Leo Thompson-Cleary and Bryce Bateman again led the Warriors defence from the front. Kobe Davis and Adam Butler continue to show fine improvement in their tackling technique. Under 11 - It was a very special lead up to the Under 11 game with Wattles team major sponsor and former Wattles Junior
Club President Paul Morris of Clifton Auto Ag Services making the official presentation of jerseys to the team and chatting to them about rugby league. In a tough contest against their opponents from the west the young Warriors held firm for a drawn result, each team crossing for three tries apiece. Under 12 - While lock Jack Burton was his usual exceptional self in defence, team mate and back-rower Hugh Denny continues to impress in another outstanding all-round effort that helped the Ryanie for Tyres Wattles Under 12 side to a dominant 24 – 0 victory over Goondiwindi, Coach Jason Fogarty commended each player in his line-up on their continued improvement in such a great team effort. “This group of boys have confirmed they are a special group of junior rugby league players, they were under a lot of pressure from Goondiwindi in first half but continued to put in a brutal defensive effort to wear down their opponents before hitting their straps in the second half. Wattles 24 (Hugh Denny 2, James Saddlier, Ty Betts, Archer Steinhart tries; Ty Betts, Jonte May goals). Under 13 - It was long day at the office for Wattles Nutrien Harcourts Cooke Real Estate Under 13’s as they were well out played by the Boars to the tune of 70-0. Tom Worboys, Orry Gilmore and Henry McMillan were strong in a beaten team Under 15 - Alas the Drayton Medical Centre Wattles Under 15 outfit suffered a frustrating loss brought about by unforced errors that allowed the Boars to stay in the contest. Goondiwindi landed first points, but Wattles responded to level the ledger with a try to Jackson
May. The game remained in the balance before Charlie Spina crossed before half time for the Warriors to trail 14-10. The second half was a great spectacle of end to end footy with Paddy Denny involved in some great plays that saw him cross for a double and Nico Denny off for a runaway try. The Boars were up to the task though capitalising on home side errors and posting tries to claim the win. Charlie Spina was recognised Wattles best by visiting Bulldogs Regional Officer Blake Mara. Goondiwindi 28 defeated Wattles 26 (Paddy Denny 2, Nico Denny, Charlie Spina, Jackson May tries; Billy Peardon 3 goals). Under 17 - The Hamblin Builders Wattles Under 17 side saw victory slip from their grasp as the Boars touched down in the final minute of play and converted to level the scores resulting in a 26 all draw. Coach Shane Wright blamed poor marker defence a weak link for his team. “We allowed them to make to much ground up the middle, which will be a focus of training this week.” Wattles halves Corey Deehan and Bryce Stewart impressed creating room for their outside backs, with Hamish Gartery and Lachie Clements benefiting. Front-rowers Graham Hopper and Darcy Betts took Wattles pack forward supported capably by Mr Consistency George Nott. Wattles 26 (Hamish Gartery 2, Lachlan Clements, Bryce Stewart, Sam Gilmore tries; Bryce Stewart 3 goals) drew with Goondiwindi 26. Wattles head to Tenterfield this Saturday for Round 13 of the Warwick & District Junior Rugby League premiership. Glyn Rees

Amelia’s first tooth
Baby Amelia is almost 8 months old now and she finally has her first tooth coming through. She loves to eat all sorts of food and we often give her a tiny bit of whatever we are eating at dinner. She really likes pumpkin and mashed veggies but doesn’t really like sweet food like pear. Amelia goes everywhere with us and she loves to meet people and always gives them a big smile. She’s not crawling yet but rolls around on the floor everywhere. Whenever she is in the music studio with us she always rolls over to where the instruments are and tries to pluck the strings on the cellos.

Superbikes Championship - 3 Days Of Thrills At Morgan Park
Downs Region is a favourite. The people in the region are terrific and the hospitality is second to none and the way they welcome our Championship entourage is wonderful. “In 2022, we are bringing all of our major classes back to Warwick for the first time since 2019 and we are really looking forward to a fantastic weekend of the best motorcycle racing in the land.” Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said that hosting the Championship was a win for both the region and the burgeoning tourism industry. “The flow-on effect of welcoming thousands of race fans from across Queensland to the region will have tremendous economic benefits to our local businesses. “Warwick’s reputation as the Horsepower Capital of Australia will not go unnoticed and hosting this event sends a very clear message to other sporting organisers – Southern Downs means business!
