2022 was a disappointing year with no Allora Show and no Allora Showgirl. But bring on 2023 and we have our Show back and it’s looking bigger and better than ever.
The call is out - The Allora Show Society is encouraging girls aged between 12 and 19 to enter the Allora Showgirl competition. This year there’s been a change
with no fundraising required. All that’s needed is an entry submitted by Sunday 22nd January. Judging will take place on Thursday 2nd February.
Entry forms and further details are available from Judy Emms - phone 0468 912 068.
The Allora Show will be held this year on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th February.
Commencing this week the office of The Allora Advertiser will be CLOSED every Thursday. The office will OPEN every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am.
If you have an urgent enquiry on Thursday please phone The Clifton Courier office on 4697 3603.
Part of the Queensland Government’s $19 million Southern Downs Drought Resilience program included upgrade works to the intake pump station at Leslie Dam.
Water Minister Glenn Butcher said the upgrade work includes replacement of three 55-year-old pumps, pipework and the electrical switchboard.
“The new pumps are more powerful and energy efficient and will significantly improve the community’s drought resilience.
“The new switchboard is based on the latest technology complying all the current relevant regulations and standards.
“This equipment, in effect, will increase the amount of water that could be pumped from Leslie dam.” he said.
“I’m pleased to say that these new pumps, along with additional works by Sunwater, will enable access to water at much lower levels than the previous, old pumps and this means more water will be available in drought times for urban supply than has previously been available,” Mr Butcher said.
The Queensland Government allocated $4.54 million to increase Leslie Dam’s usable water capacity, and by upgrading its water treatment systems and pumps has increased capacity by 1700 ML
(or about 680 Olympic swimming pools).
Warwick has no contingency supply and carting to a town the size of Warwick is not feasible.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Vic Pennisi said the improvements would ensure the pump station would be fit for purpose for decades to come.
“As our community grows, the increased capability and efficiency of our pump station will be very beneficial,” he said.
These upgrades are part of a broader drought resilience program being delivered in partnership with Seqwater, Sunwater and Southern Downs Regional Council, and in consultation with Toowoomba Regional Council.
If anyone can help, even for a few hours, at the Heritage Weekend, on 28th or 29th January, it would be greatly appreciated.
With no Covid restrictions in place helping at the entry gates is easy.
There are also other
positions where volunteers are needed.
Please help the busy committee that organises this huge event for Allora.
Phone Graeme on 0428 717 623 or Mark on 0438 623 734.
This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise, show your appreciation and say thanks to the champions of our community by nominating them for the 2023 Australia Day Awards.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the annual awards are an important community initiative and encouraged residents to nominate someone who deserves a real pat on the back.
“Southern Downs is home to an army of individuals who make a true difference at a grass roots level to our community and liveability through their tireless contributions,” Mayor Pennisi said.
Nominations close at 5pm this Friday, January 13 with winners being announced at the Australia Day Awards on Thursday January 26. Contact SDRC for details on how to nominate.
The overall Southern Downs Citizen of the Year will be selected from the collective group from all categories.
The Queensland Government has announced new action and stronger laws to further protect community safety.
This tough new action includes:
1. Increasing the maximum penalty for stealing a car from 7 years to 10 years imprisonment
2. A more severe penalty of 14 years if the offence of stealing a car is committed at night, where the offender uses violence or threatens violence, is armed or pretends to be armed, is in company or damages or threatens to damage any property 3. Amend the Youth Justice Act requiring courts to take into account previous bail history, criminal activity and track record when sentencing 4. Increased penalties for criminals who share these crimes on social media 5. Extreme High Visibility Police Patrols 6. A $9.89 million fast-track sentencing program in Brisbane, Townsville, Southport and Cairns so children spend less time on remand and more time serving their sentences 7. The construction of two new youth detention centres 8. A trial of engine immobilisers in Mt Isa, Cairns and Townsville 9. The appointment within Queensland Police Service of an Assistant Commissioner to the position of Youth Crime Taskforce Commander 10. The increased penalties apply to adults as well as juvenile offenders.
The Government will introduce the required legislative changes into the Queensland Parliament in February 2023.

The Allora and District Garden Circle takes a break in January so that we can be with family and friends during the Christmas/New Year holiday.
This year we do have two items of homework. Firstly, we can take photos of notable trees around the district, for inclusion in our
Secondly, we can pot up surplus hardy plants from our gardens to give to the Allora Show Society. Members of the Show Society are creating new garden areas at the showgrounds. We have been asked whether we could contribute easy-care perennials, for either shade or full sun, e.g. - salvia, bilbergia, agapanthus, gazania. They need to be ready for planting in late February.
The lack of rain has meant less time spent mowing, so maybe more time for homework.
Best wishes for 2023.

A spokesperson from the Southern Downs Regional Council has identified the weed as Curled Dock, a common weed of pastures and croplands. It is a perennial up to 2m tall. Seed germinates from autumn to spring and it grows into a rosette of leaves over winter to form a solid taproot. Rootstocks shoot in early autumn and rapidly produce a rosette of many leaves that shade and crowd neighbouring
plants. Flowering stems emerge in spring and top growth usually dies off over summer though some rosette leaves may survive in summer moist areas. Most seedling don’t flower in their first season under field conditions. Flowers at the middle of the seed head open first then progressive towards the top and then towards the base. Seed ripens 16-20 days after flowering. The old flowering
stems remain attached to the plant for most of the following season, though most of the seed has shed by late autumn. Chemical control is
the preferred option, both selective and non-selective are effective. Please seek specific advice from your chemical seller and the chemical label on the drum.
Jeremy said I could do the article in the paper this time.
I like model planes and I like flying gliders with my grandfather Dan Dan. On Sunday dad took Jeremy and me to where they fly radio controlled model planes in Warwick called Warwick Aeromodellers Club and it was great. I got to watch the grown ups fly their planes and everyone was really cool.
One of them called Greg is going to give Jeremy and me some lessons and the other guy called Peter let me borrow his special computer simulator for flying RC model planes so that when I have my first lesson I’ll already have some practice. If I like having the lessons from Greg on real model planes, I can join the club as a junior and I hope I can do because I love model planes.
Jeremy is also practising the simulator but because I am already a gamer with a PS4 and a gaming PC its easy to me. Maybe I can join the Air Force like my mum and dad did one day. But Jeremy isn’t too bad either and he also thinks maybe he will become a pilot too, but he also wants to be a journalist.
Dad did this photo of me with the simulator and its controls are just exactly the same as the RC controller that you have to use to fly a real RC model plane. I’m in Grade 4 this year and happy new year to everyone who gets this article from me and also from my brother Jeremy.
