“LEST WE FORGET”

It was wonderful to see the Allora Showgrounds a hive of activity on the weekend with the hosting of the Allora Show Equestrian, Show Jumping and Dressage Competitions. It was always on the agenda to proceed with the Competitions after the unfortunate cancellation of the Allora Show in February, and even though there was unprecedented rain at the beginning of the week, the Equestrian Events went ahead in perfect Autumn weather. Competitors came from as far as Mackay to the north, Glen Innes to the South, Roma to the west and all areas in between. The Ridden and Led Show Classes were very well supported on Saturday with Competitors overwhelmed by the wonderful support of our Sponsors. The Main Ring was picture-perfect after the very wet Autumn and it was great to see the six Competition Rings busy all day. The Show Jumping Events took place in the Undercover Arena with the Competitors and Judge complementing the Show Society on this wonderful asset. Visitors were

able to purchase their Refreshments from the ‘Ring Side Café’ and view the Show Jumping from the comfort of the covered Bar area. The well-supported Dressage Competition took place in the Main Ring on Sunday where two Dressage Arenas were kept busy until well into the afternoon. These Events cannot proceed without the generosity of our Sponsors and the wonderful support of the Show Society Volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the grounds in immaculate condition. The Judges, Canteen Workers, Ring Office Volunteers and Stewards are also to be commended for their efforts which enabled the Weekend to proceed. Our Show Patron, Mrs Dorothy Rubie, spent Saturday in the Ring Office, keeping the ‘younger’ brigade on task. Dorothy has given over 50 years of service to the Show Society and her contribution is still very much valued. With the easing of Qld Health mandates, it will now make the staging of events at the Showgrounds much easier, where everyone can attend, and the Show Society looks forward to announcing a date, in the near future, for the postponed ‘Allora Show Bull Ride’. Allora RSL Among Grant Recipients

As part of the first round of the Queensland Remembers Grants Program, the Allora RSL SubBranch received $31,970 for upgrades. This is one of 25 projects that shared $1.5 million in funding. Treasurer of the Allora RSL Sub-Branch Ray Saunders told The Allora Advertiser that the work to be undertaken includes stripping back and painting the RSL Hall, putting down a concrete driveway with wheel-chair access to the side verandah and finishing the sullage pit at the back of the Clubhouse. The Queensland Remembers Grants are for capital works and community projects that enhance the support and services for ex-servicemen and women. This is one of 25 projects that shared $1.5 million in funding. The program allows exservice and not-for-profit organisations that support veterans to apply for grants of up to $50,000 for minor capital works and grants between $50,000 and $250,000 for major capital works.

Hall to get a new coat of paint, driveway to be concreted and wheelchair access for side verandah.

And it provides community grants of up to $50,000 to ex-service organisations, councils and not-for-profit organisations to create or restore memorials, avenues of honour, memorial gardens and deliver commemorative activities and events. There is still plenty more funding available, with applications now open for another $1.5 million from the 2022 Anzac Day Trust Grants Program and the second round of the Anzac Day Trust COVID-19 Grants Program.

Sullage pit to be finished.

Online submissions close on 15 May 2022 and successful applicants will be announced in November 2022.

SES members are co-workers with Ambulance Services, Fire Brigades, Rural Fire Brigades and the Police. Their work includes flood boat rescue, road crash rescue, Urban and Rural evacuation searches and rescues, emergency traffic management,, agency support and community education. The worth of the SES is played out whenever there’s a disaster. For anyone interested in joining the SES there’s a six months basic training period. Members will receive world class training and their primary purpose is to assist the most vulnerable

members of the community. There are eight area offices in Queensland, manned by paid staff. Volunteers are not paid for their services. Good advice from Senior Constable Belinda Elks of the Queensland Police. Do you know where your keys are and if they are safe from prying eyes? We have recently had an increased number of vehicles stolen using the vehicle’s keys. Did you know that in Queensland, one in two vehicles are stolen using the keys? That means that thieves are locating the keys too easily. It’s important to recognise that while offenders are the ones doing the wrong thing here and choosing to steal, we also know that there are ways that we as a community can reduce the opportunistic thieves’ abilities. We want to encourage members of our community to take proactive measures to reduce the chances

of becoming a victim of opportunistic theft. Police would like the community to get involved in securing their keys, vehicles and houses. When not in use, hide keys away where offenders are unable to see them through your windows or if they manage to break into your home. Conduct a security assessment and lock up and together we can reduce the number of vehicles being stolen in our area. Crime prevention requires police and the community to work together to implement smart strategies to make our community safe. Further information on vehicle security and home security can be found on the Queensland Police website.

IT’S BACK AND IT’S BIG!

Rotary’s Annual Big Book Sale Is On Next Week

There’s a huge collection of secondhand books for you to pick through over 6 days commencing Tuesday 19th April from 9am until 4pm at the Rotary Storage room, corner Tooth and Wood Streets Warwick. “We can’t wait to open the doors” said Rotarian Sally Edwards, “We have even more donated books, CD’s and DVD’s than last year in every category. “There’s a large area full of kids quality books both fiction and non-fiction and every child who comes receives an extra free book” she said. Paperbacks will be priced at $1 and hardbacks $2.

“This is one of the main fundraisers for our club each year and all the money raised goes back into the local community” President of the Warwick Rotary Sunrise Club Peter Rodeck said. “We usually run the book sale in April but our sales have been disrupted by Covid. This year we are back on track but Covid precautions still apply. Everyone will be asked to sanitise their hands on entering and maintain a safe distance from other patrons however it is a big space and there is plenty of room for everyone to keep a safe distance apart”. Plenty of parking is available around the side streets and volunteers will be on hand to help carry out your books if you buy up big. Rotary is still accepting donations of books. Boxes of books in good clean condition can be left at B & K Motors, Albion Street, Warwick.

Support For Ag Shows

Early last year, then President of Allora Show Society Mark Pillar joined Member for Maranoa David Littleproud to officially open the Ring Side Café at the Allora Showground.

Agriculture to benefit from more skilled migrants and workers

Maranoa businesses will soon be able to fill critical skills shortages and labour needs, particularly in agriculture. Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said significant increases in the number of places allocated under the Government’s Migration Program and Working Holiday Maker visa program would help bring much needed skilled employees and workers to the electorate. “Our Government’s Migration Program will focus on skilled migration, with the Skill stream increasing to 109,900 places – 30,000 places above 2021-22 planning levels,” he said. “Regional visas will also more than double to 25,000 places in

Ritemate half button Shirts

total, with Maranoa businesses to directly benefit from this. “To support Australian agriculture and the sustained growth of the tourism sector, our Coalition Government has announced a one-off cap increase to the number of places available to Working Holiday Makers from countries with which Australia has a Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa arrangement. “As a result, around 11,000 additional Working Holiday Maker visa places will be available for prospective backpackers, with these backpackers vital to Maranoa’s agricultural sector, as well as to remote tourism and hospitality businesses.”

Agricultural shows will benefit from $15.4 million under the Federal Government for a second round of the oversubscribed Agricultural Shows Development Grant Program. Minister for Agriculture and Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said the funding would support the growth and longterm sustainability of this important industry. “Show societies will be able to use these funds to upgrade or repair showground infrastructure,” Minister Littleproud said. “The grants provide regional communities with the opportunity to make showground facilities safe,

attractive and accessible for showground users and the 6 million annual visitors. Agricultural shows are important as they are a driver for innovation and education, they showcase Australia’s food and fibre, and support local economies. “They generate $1 billion for regional Australia in economic benefits, they’re supported by around 50,000 volunteers, and most importantly, they play an important role in the social and economic fabric of regional Australia. The last couple of years have seen unprecedented disruptions to agricultural shows, and this is our way of helping out.”

Lights Out Inspires Warriors Rematch

Wattles A Grade side were forced to warm their heels until Wednesday evening this week as they prepare to run on in their Round 2 restart clash with the Newtown Lions at Drayton. An electrical issue blacked out the Jack Martin Memorial Centre on Saturday evening soon after play commenced. It was a frustrating ending to the nights program according to captain/coach Travis Burns who was keen to match wits against the Lions after Wattles impressive 24 – 12 victory over Valleys last week. Burns could feel somewhat confident after Newtown were dealt a 50 – 6 walloping by reigning premiers Goondiwindi in the opening Round. The ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ Wattles line-up included representative back-rowers Brendon McBride and veteran Dale Perkins, both making their first appearance in the new season, while lock forward Ryan Duggan is an absentee. Promising Under 19 back Matthew Wilson has caught the eye of the coach and was named for his A Grade debut, and while he took the field briefly on Saturday, his initial official top-grade game will now take place four days later. Mentor Burns has had the job of keeping his top seventeen focused for the return to Newtown’s Jack martin Centre for the midweek clash, their last on field outing until Sunday April 24th at Platz Oval in a pre-season Barrett Family Shield re-run against the Warwick Cowboys. Wattles A Grade lineup to meet Newtown: 1. Jackson Green, 2. Aaron Hooper, 3. Austin Jennings, 4. Nick Van Der Poel, 5.

Mitchell Bourke, 6. Travis Burns (c), 7. Matt Duggan, 8. Michael Pearson, 9. Kai Duggan, 10. Jordon Crocker, 11. Tyson Stevens, 12. Les Hartvigsen, 13. Dale Perkins, 14. Ryan Stevens, 15. Mitch Duff, 16. Brendon McBride, 17. Matthew Wilson. Coach: Travis Burns. Reserve Grade - Hot on the heels of their racking up a half century belting of Valleys in their last outing, Wattles ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ reserve grade side dished out some similar discipline as they accounted for Newtown 54 – 6 on the Lions home turf. In slippery, slopy, wet conditions the Warriors raced to a 22 – 0 half time advantage before continuing the momentum to gather a further 32 points in the second stanza. While Co-coach Garth Lonergan felt his team “could’ve completed their sets to a better level”, he was still very happy with the win. The Lions only points came off a kick, a positive sign according to Lonergan, “but we still have plenty

to improve on going into the upcoming contest with Warwick”. While those in green and gold could boast classy performances across the paddock, mobile forward Mitch Duff and playmaker Joe Morris shone throughout. Wattles 54 (Dale McAntee 2, Carlos Smith 2, Zack Stevens 2, Declan Sullivan, Garth Lonergan, Alex Morris, Tom Morris tries; Tom Morris 7 goals) defeated Newtown 6 (Josh Duncan try; Ashley Shepherd goal). Under 19 - Wattles ‘Black Toyota’ Under 19 lineup headed to Ipswich on Sunday, proving more than capable opponents before finishing behind the might of Ipswich Brothers 24 – 10. Brothers and fellow Ipswich club Redbank will compete in the Toowoomba Rugby League Under 19 premiership after regular clubs Goondiwindi, Souths, Newtown and South Burnett withdrew for the 2022 season. Wattles were never out of the game, only trailing 6 – 12 at half time and 10 – 18 as

full time approached. They were more than competitive with the bigger opponents, and while they gave some ball away cheaply Wattles forwards held their own admirably against their heavier opposition pack. While not capitalised on, half Matt Wilson’s kicking game provided foundation and opportunity. Back-rower Will Denny was tireless throughout while back-rower Tyson Stevens can lay claim to Wattles Player of the Match honours. Home town lock forward Nate Townsley shut the game out for Brothers when he charged down a kick and scored in the later stages. Ipswich Brothers 24 (Caeden Hockings, Parnell Aue, Nate Townsley tries; Caeden Hockings 2, Parnell Aue, Zane Kaatz goals) defeated Wattles 10 (Lachlan Meacle, Chris Watt tries; Matthew Wilson goal). Wattles take the field again in a clash of the Southern Downs titans at Platz Oval against the Warwick Cowboys on Sunday April 24th. Glyn Rees

Letter From Member For Maranoa David Littleproud MP This election – to be held on May 21 – presents a clear choice.

It has been an absolute honour to represent Maranoa since 2016 and I am proud to have secured more than $6.9 billion for our region. You know what the Coalition stands for, you can see what we’ve delivered and you can see our plan for the future. We’re delivering tax relief for workers and small businesses. We’re halving the tax you pay at the petrol pump for six months and our tax plan will put more money in your pocket in the coming weeks and months, on top of our longerterm tax relief for everyone earning up to $200,000 a year. I’m about better and safer roads to make sure you and your loved ones get home safely – like the $678 million investment for the Outback Way to unlock the interior from Winton, $508 million to upgrade the Warrego Highway from Miles to Toowoomba, $36.19 million to upgrade the Gore Highway at Wyaga Creek in the

Goondiwindi region and $20 million to upgrade Warwick’s Eight Mile Intersection. We’re making record investments in health and other essential services. The Coalition’s plan is to have record bulk-billing; we’ve made Telehealth permanent to limit the tyranny of distance and listed more than 2800 drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to make medicines more affordable for you and your family. We have invested in tourism to not only diversify economic opportunity and create local jobs but also celebrate and educate about our unique way of life, history, innovation and resilience. Whether it was securing $47 million in funding to stimulate the Outback’s economy by rebuilding Winton’s Waltzing Matilda Centre after it was destroyed by fire, upgrades to Longreach’s Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre and Qantas Founders

Golf Course

Allora Golf Club President Mark Henley said that members had been practising on the new course for the past six weeks and all was in readiness for the official opening on April 19th. Mr. Henley said that the formation of the course had been made possible by many different contributions from organizations, businesses and private individuals, including a traineeship grant of $247,000 from the Southern Inland Queensland Area Consultative Committee and a machinery grant of $15,500 from the Warwick

Outback Museum, Charleville’s Outback Museum of Australia, $5 million to develop Cunnamulla’s Artesian Hot Springs and Warrego River Walk and $4.5 million to help transform Kingaroy’s CBD. Maranoa’s agriculture has done the heavy lifting in our economic recovery post COVID-19 and I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with farmers and graziers to boost Australia’s production to $100 billion by 2030. This government has committed more than $5.5 billion in direct support across the seven themes of Delivering Ag2030 – Trade and Exports, Biosecurity, Stewardship, Supply Chains, Water and Infrastructure, Innovation and Research, and Human Capital – which sets the foundation for industry to not only achieve its goal, but to help primary producers build resilience and access new markets across the world. Valedictory

Nurse Waldow, who is leaving Allora after occupying the position of matron of the local hospital for about two years, was on the eve of her departure accorded a send-off at which many inmates of the hospital were present. Dr. Sapsford, on behalf of her many friends, presented the matron with a well-furnished silver purse, the doctor’s appreciative remarks being endorsed by hearty applause. The Rev. A. E. Lapthorne responded on Matron Waldow’s behalf. Dainty refreshments were served and a musical programme was contributed to by many present. Allora’s Past 150 years ago April 1872

School Holidays with Amelia

Because school holidays have been on for the past week I got to spend a lot more time with my baby sister Amelia who is four months old now. During normal times when I am at school I don’t get to see what mum and Amelia do all day except for on weekends which are a bit different. Every morning Amelia wakes up at about 5.30am. This morning dad changed her nappy and mum gave her a feed. Straight after this Amelia did a great big poo and dad had to change the nappy again. After this she had a quick bath and then spent some time next to dad while he read the newspaper. This is when she is really happy and smiles a lot and makes all kinds of cute noises which show that she is happy. Sometimes mum and Dad put Peppa Pig on the TV and Amelia squeals and throws her arms around because she loves Peppa Pig. At about 7.30am dad went to work and mum gave Amelia another feed and she went to sleep after that for about an hour. For most of the day she has this routine where she wakes up, gets a new nappy and then plays with her mobile and has tummy time and plays with William, Mum and me. I like to do this thing where I grab her hands and slowly pull her up from lying down to sitting up. She gets really excited and is starting to learn how to hold on. After a while she starts to get a bit upset and wants a bottle of milk. As soon as she finishes the bottle you have to put her down to sleep. Sometimes I whisper to her while she’s going to sleep and she makes those cute noises again. SUDOKU At night time, we put Amelia in the high chair while we eat dinner. Even though she can’t eat real food yet she loves it when she gets to sit with everyone together. After we’ve all had tea we give Amelia another bath which she loves, and then we dress her and get her ready for sleep with another bottle. Then she sleeps from about 8.00pm until about midnight when mum and dad feed her again. Mum says that if you are careful, Amelia falls back asleep really quickly and then just feeds while she’s asleep so that she just keeps sleeping until the morning. In between all of the things that Amelia does, she also goes out with us in the car, or my grandparents Nonna and Dan Dan spend some time with her so she gets to have a good time. William and I really love Amelia. It’s not like we get jealous about having a new baby in the family because we really love playing with her because she’s so cute. When the school holidays are over I will miss getting lots of time with her.

He went to the chicken coop and replaced every single egg with a brightly coloured one. A few minutes later the rooster walked in saw all the coloured eggs, then stormed outside and killed the peacock.
