Mega Arena Takes Shape

Due to Workshop Health and Safety concerns work has been delayed on the construction of the

covered arena at the Allora Showground. The rain and strong winds have made conditions dangerous for

workers. Some of the sheeting is 11 metres long. Principal Contractor Barry Glass is aiming to finish the

construction in 7 to 8 working days, weather permitting. At this stage the Showground is closed to the public.

Premier’s Hypocrisy Challenged

There has been a local backlash against the delay by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in closing Queensland’s borders to people from NSW, particularly against the backdrop of fast action by the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. Local pundits have suggested the reason is that the Premier wanted to ingratiate herself with the rugby league community and will act as soon as teams are ensconced. Local reaction has been supported by Member for Southern Downs James Lister. I support the government in taking measures to to keep COVID out of Queensland. But my support depends on decisions being made openly, with consultation, and without hidden political agendas. Ms Palaszczuk has a bad record in this regard, and it’s regional border areas like ours which pay the price of it. We all remember the Palaszczuk government letting thousands attend The Gabba and rolling out the red carpet for movie and sports stars. This was while families were forcibly separated from dying relatives, gun shops and inland lakes were closed “to keep us safe”, ANZAC Day was cancelled, and farmers and small businesses - who pay the welfare bill in this country - were harshly locked out

of their markets, suppliers, customers and properties. It took me six months of hard slog to get those unfair things overturned, but Ms Palaszczuk will bung up the portholes for celebrities at the drop of a hat. My message to the Palaszczuk Government is this: If the borders must be closed, then do it, and forget all about getting happy snaps alongside sportsmen and movie stars.

The Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland (HMC CQ) Warwick Area’s event Frostbite Rally had a more than appropriate name this year as dozens of riders from around Queensland braved the chilly conditions and wet roads for a muchenjoyed weekend at Allora Showgrounds. HMCCQ members and visitors were pleased to be back in Allora for the Frostbite Rally after missing out last year after the event was cancelled because of COVID-19 restrictions. Riders arrived in Allora from 10 a.m. on Saturday

and went on a mystery ride in the afternoon, which provided them with an opportunity to take in the countryside of the Darling Downs without the pressure of being in a rally. On Saturday night, a dinner was held at the Allora Showgrounds which included 126 participants. Despite the cold and foggy conditions on Sunday morning, 89 motorbikes competed in the rally, although quite a few had to come back on trailers. The rally is a race where competitors follow a predetermined course and aim …story continues page 6

SCOTS PGC College plan for a strong future

Staff and students at The SCOTS PGC College in Warwick will benefit from the development of a new master plan after being successful with their grant application to the Federal Government. Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said the Australian Government will provide $28,500 towards the project through the Capital Grants Program. “Our Government is ensuring that every child gets a high-quality education no matter where they go to school. We are providing a record $315.2 billion for all Australian schools between 2018 and 2029. We are delivering real needs based funding that is matched by national reforms that will drive better results and outcomes, as recommended by David Gonski in the Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools. “This project will enable SCOTS PGC College to plan for future upgrades and support expected growth in student numbers over time. “The SCOTS PGC College has a wonderful school community, and this new master plan will further enhance the learning environment that the school can offer to staff and students.” Mr Littleproud said.

New distraction laws as mobile phone cameras roll out

Queenslanders have been warned mobile phone and seatbelt enforcement cameras would go live this month across the State as police roll out new tactics to stem the loss of lives on our roads. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the new

enforcement measures would help save lives with driver distraction and a lack of seatbelt use both still major factors in crashes. “Sadly, 29 people are killed each year in Queensland in crashes involving driver distraction and a further 43 people

who lost their lives last year weren’t wearing a seatbelt,” Ms Smith said. “Motorists snapped by the fixed and mobile cameras while not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone will be given a warning as part of a three-month grace period, before penalties are

enforced from October. “Those caught using a mobile phone while driving face a $1,033 fine and four demerit points, with double demerit points for second time offenders, while those snapped not wearing a seatbelt face a $413 and 3 demerit points.”

CENSUS 2021 - TUESDAY 10 AUGUST From late July through to early August households will receive instructions on how to complete the Census. Most households will get instructions to complete online. This will include your Census number and temporary password. Some households will receive a paper form. Once completed, return using the reply-paid envelope provided. There are instructions on the form if you prefer to complete online. Some people living in remote areas and people experiencing homelessness will have help from Census staff. The Census is compulsory - everyone who is staying in your household on Census night must be included. This includes visitors and babies. You should complete the Census wherever you are on Census night, unless you know where you’ll be on 10 August. Census data underpins a broad range of government, business and community decisions from major policy and expenditure to local services across infrastruc-ture, health, education, and transport. It’s also used extensively for planning electoral boundaries, Federal Government grant allocation and GST distribution.

Do You Need Support Learning To Drive?

It’s sometimes hard for a young person to fill in the mandatory 100 hours needed in order to gain their P’s. This could be the answer. The PCYC Braking the Cycle Program operates in Warwick for young people aged 16 - 25 years who need assistance.

And, it won’t cost you a thing! This is only possible due to the great volunteer mentors who give up their time to help. Also, the PCYC is always looking for more volunteers to join the team. You can commit to 1 hour per week with flexible hours available, must hold an open licence (minimum 12 months) and must have or be willing to obtain a Blue card. GOOMBURRA HISTORY

The Goomburra Hall will celebrate 115 years on 11th September this year. To rekindle memories Colin Newport has delved into the history of Goomburra and will present a fortnightly column in The Allora Advertiser in the lead-up to the Celebrations. Goomburra Station was at its maximum area in 1848 under the ownership of Patrick Leslie when it consisted of 80,000 acres (125 square miles) of leasehold land with an estimated carrying capacity of from 12,000 to 15,000 sheep. In 1855, 9 square miles was resumed by the Government from the western end of the property as a Reserve for a Township. During the ownership of McLean, Hodgson & Green more land was resumed by the Government under the Crown Lands Alienation Acts of 1868 and 1876. Under the ownership of Edward Wienholt in 1878 the area of the property was further reduced by the Allora Exchange Lands Act when the Government swapped approximately 20,000 acres of Goomburra land for 40,000 acres at Jondaryan. By the time that F. W. Donkin bought Goomburra from Edward Wienholt in March 1896 it had been reduced to approximately 14,000 acres, but the property was freehold and contained some of the best land on Dalrymple Creek in the Goomburra Valley.

Goomburra sheep grazing near the “Teapot” which was the site of one of the shepherd’s huts in the early days. The name possibly comes from the course of the creek in the shape of a tea pot. F. W. Donkin is standing on the ground and a young George Anderson and his father Bill are on horseback.

to return back to the starting point at a specific time that is unknown to them. As riders leave at different times and there are short and long courses to choose from, target times varied. The route that some riders took saw them go past Clifton, where a few happened to be roadside breath tested by police. Phil Wagner, the Stunt Co-ordinator, helped to determine the routes and target times. Mr Wagner said the target times considered a number of factors such as distance and an average speed of 80 km/h. Mr Wagner was especially impressed by the performance of Peter Bartley, who arrived at the exact time he was meant to. Mr Bartley therefore won his category, which is based on the age of his bike. Warwick Area, said the weekend went very well. “Apart from the rain on Friday that put a bit of a dampener on things, we had a great time,” Mrs Carruthers said. “The catering by the Show Society was wonderful.” Mrs Carruthers said the winners of each rally category each won a mug for a trophy, providing them with something practical to use. The Frostbite Rally was first held in 1992 at Leslie Dam near Warwick before moving to the Allora Showgrounds a few years later. The genesis of the idea came from the Frostbite Regatta held by Warwick Sailing Club. The 89 participants in the rally on Sunday was slightly more than the l87 who participated in the last event in 2019 and a few less than the record amount of 94 in 2016. HMCCQ, formed in September 1970, is an enthusiasts’ club with more than 1300 members who take pride in keeping motorcycles 30 years and older on the road. There are 15 regional branches across Queensland, including Warwick and Toowoomba, and a subcommittee focused on the Indian Marque.

Halfback Matt Duggan was in superb form as Wattles’ playmaking General around the park, rewarded with being named the “Lee Group Electrical Player of the round. His performance included a try and eleven goals from twelve attempts for a 26-point personal tally against the dismal Diehards. The result saw Wattles move to second place on the A Grade competition ladder with 18 premiership points, ahead of Highfields on for and against. The points floodgates opened when green and gold hooker Kai Williamson-Duggan touched down after just eight minutes, followed five minutes later by Matt Duggan for the Warriors to ease ahead 12 – 0. Dalby showed some spark to reply with a four-pointer by winger Ryan Welsh, for what would be his side’s only points of the game.

Travis Burns Warriors methodically added another 58 points at regular intervals in a more than convincing victory. Long Serving Teacher Retires

After a teaching career spanning 39 years, the last 25 of which were spent at the Allora State School, Mick Dwan has retired. Mr Dwan said that he clearly remembered his first day at the Allora school and could not believe that twenty-five years had passed. He said that when he arrived in January 1971 the school had a principal and six primary school teachers, with no support staff. “The school currently has a staff of 33,” he said. Mr Dwan said that his greatest achievements were in seeing the pupils that he had taught achieve success in life. Following retirement he will return to the family farm at Massie. During the war years the activities of the Allora Rifle Club lapsed, although the range was used by members of the local VDC and other troops and is therefore still in fair condition. To reform the club, a meeting was held this week and was well attended by 30 persons who hope to become members. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr W. A. Moulday; President, Mr. H. G. The caterpillar pest has made its appearance in many parts of the district and paddocks of oats have been stripped of leaves and heads. Past experience has all gone to prove that the pest, beyond stripping wheat of flag, does little damage to the crop and the caterpillars have been welcomed by reason that they clear the wheat paddocks of wild oats. Honey Bees are here for keepers

The Australian Government has announced a $600,000 grant for honey bee bushfire recovery research and development. Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said the grant would help the Australian honey bee industry to build resilience and bounce back. “This funding is great news for our beekeepers and will help them get their buzz back and build resilience for future disasters,” Minister Littleproud said. “The grant will help the Australian honey bee industry undertake key research about how to help rebuild hives after bushfires. “The research will help beekeepers understand how decreased forest resources after fires affects honey bee biosecurity and nutrition.

“It will also investigate best practice supplementary feeding and hive management technology.” AgriFutures Australia will manage the research as the rural research and development corporation for the honeybee and pollination industry. Bushfire recovery research and development is part of the industry’s Bushfire Recovery Plan, which was released by the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council in August 2020. Fast Facts: • The 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires destroyed an estimated 15.6 million hectares of native Australian forest, severely compromising the viability of the honey bee industry and the plant industries that rely on critical pollination services. • The honey bee and pollination industry Bushfire Recovery Planand six point action plan identify short-term support measures and longer-term industry change initiatives to ensure its ongoing viability. • This grant complements

previous support of $270,000 provided to the bee industry to support the National Bee Pest Surveillance program and the National Bee Biosecurity program. • The industry levy contributing to these programs was significantly reduced due to declining honey bee

production as a result of the 2019-20 bushfires. • The AgriFutures Honeybee & Pollination Program supports R&D to ensure a productive, sustainable and more profitable Australian beekeeping industry and secure the pollination of Australia’s horticultural and agricultural crops. June 1 - August 31

We had a lot of exciting plans for the winter holidays but because of the recent lockdowns in NSW and Brisbane the holidays didn’t go as we had planned. Mum and I were planning to go to the nursing home in Brisbane so we could see Great Nana there and we even got the flu shot for it, but we didn’t go because of Covid. We planned to go to the Cuskelly music winter school but we couldn’t go because of Covid. We also couldn’t go to Evans Head because there weren’t any cabins left in the caravan park there and because of Covid. The only exciting things that happened during the holidays was Mum’s birthday party where she announced the baby and we went to Toowoomba. I’ve already talked about Mum’s birthday and Jake’s birthday last time so I’ll start from the end of last column. So after Jake’s party in Toowoomba we went to KFC. And by we I mean me because I am the only person who likes KFC. We stayed in Toowoomba overnight and the next morning William had an appointment with his orthopaedic surgeon who fixed his broken arm. About two weeks ago William had a second surgery on his arm to remove the pins holding his broken arm together. So at this appointment they just took the dressing off and checked how it was healing. The good news is that William’s arm is now better so he can play footy and do all the other stuff William likes to do. When we got home from Toowoomba William and I went straight to riding the buggy and dirt bikes. The next morning we went kayaking at Storm King Dam but I’ll have to finish this story next time as I’ve run out of words.
