Gwynnes Win Best Kept Garden

Dale and Gary Gwynne of Allora are proud to win the Leslie Kadow Memorial Trophy for the Best Kept Garden in the Warwick Horticultural Society’s successful Garden Competition held this month. The Gwynnes also picked up a 3rd place in the Acreage Garden entry.

Well known locals Graham and Nancy Hoey (who now live in Warwick) won the Champion Iris at the Iris and Rose Show held in Clifton during Country Week. Judging was held on Saturday and the public was able to view the beautiful displays of Iris and Roses at the Senior Citizen Hall.

There’s still plenty happening all this week in Clifton including the Art Exhibition from 10 until 2pm each day at the Library, night bowls Thursday night and of course the popular Clifton Races this Saturday from 11am at the Recreation Grounds.

Allora is blessed to have many hard working volunteers in our local community.

Large Crowd Enjoyed St Pat’s Fete On Friday Night

The weather stayed fine and the locals arrived ready for a fun time.

They weren’t disappointed with entertainment, interesting stalls, games for the kids and plenty to see and eat.

St Patrick’s Fete Committee was extremely happy with the financial benefits this will bring to the School.

The Federal Government is providing funding of $20,000 to the Clifton and District Progress Association through the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

The aim is to deliver a new destination event during the traditionally quiet winter season.

Federal Member for Maranoa, David Littleproud said the Government’s investment will create economic opportunities not just in town but across the electorate.

“This is a proud day for the region in our fight to make sure we get our fair share,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The Government is backing this project so local people can have a vision for the future, while creating jobs to boost the local economy.

“This project will be aimed at attracting visitors

Under Round 5 of the BBRF, the Government has committed almost $300 million to support 295 projects across regional Australia, which will create an estimated 9,900 jobs during the project period.

This latest funding round takes our total support through the BBRF to $1.38 billion across nearly 1,300 projects.

Warwick Waste Facility Operational

Southern Downs Regional Council enters a new era in sustainable waste management practices with the official opening of the region’s first engineered lined landfill cell at the Warwick Waste Facility.

Incorporating the latest innovative technology, the new 23,500m2 cell is supported by a modern leachate collection system to ensure all contaminated water is safely collected with no impact the environment.

“Council invests approximately $10m per year in waste management and acknowledges that there’s not much financial wriggle room in this model.

“With this investment, Council has delivered an engineered site that sustainably and financially responds to the need to be more innovative on how we handle our waste products this landfill cell is an exciting

start to supporting the region for future generations.”

Southern Downs Mayor Pennisi said.

Interesting data on the facility • The cell has been excavated to 2m in depth due to geotechnical constraints.

• A total of 38,000 cubic meters of material was removed to create the cell.

• There is approximately

145,000 cubic meters of airspace available to fill.

• The site will be filled to a height of 12.5m above the natural ground level.

• The cell has a life expectancy of 5.5 year based on 26,000 cubic meters of waste to landfill a year.

• The project also included the construction of a new 7ML stormwater dam which collects clean

stormwater from around the landfill cell.

• Fully funded by Council, the project came in on the allocated $3.1m budget.

• Materials for the project were sourced locally where possible and it has been estimated that approximately $650k was spent directly on the Southern Downs.

Champion Of Champions Ekka Sheep Competition

Last Saturday the RNA Champion of Champions Sheep Event was held at the Pittsworth Showgrounds.

Sponsored by Dickson Ag, this is the richest event of its kind in Australia offering some $3000 prizemoney with the Champion in each section taking home $600 and the Reserve $400.

Prior to the Champion of Champions event, the RNA Stud Sheep competition was held to find the entrants eligible from the RNA for the Champion of Champions event. Sheep were accepted from the Pittsworth, Inglewood, Allora, Clifton, Warwick, Toowoomba and Mt Gravatt Shows.

There were sixty eight sheep at Pittsworth for the RNA competition covering seven breeds of sheep with Stud sheep from Milton Park, Sovereign Poll Dorset, Plainview, Silverdale studs and three schools.

The Allora Show Society Equestrian Group recently held a very successful competition weekend. On Saturday 9th October a T shirt (relaxed, unofficial show horse) Hack Day was held with special classes for Off The Track Thoroughbred horses with generous prizes including $500 from Racing Queensland with riders travelling from Chinchilla, Roma Brisbane, Boonah, Toowoomba and the local areas.

Then, on Sunday, 10th October a Dressage Competition was held at the showgrounds and it was well supported by both locals and riders from Inglewood, Brisbane and Boonah areas.

Drone Commander adds to fleet

Cambooya-based agricultural business Drone Commander has expanded their fleet by adding a DJI AGRAS T20 Spraying Drone.

Drone Commander principal Roger Woods said the T20 in DJI AGRAS T20 signifies that it has a capacity of 20 litres or kilograms.

“It is double the capacity of our other drones,” Mr Woods said.

“It has very high levels of technology.

“We can cover a much larger area in much shorter time.”

The new drone can cover six hectares an hour, which is better than double the amount Drone Commander’s previous drones could cover.

Mr Woods said Drone Commander has been given permission to use the new drone commercially by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

“They came and tested us on our farm at Cambooya.

“CASA granted us approval to use the DJI AGRAS T20 commercially,” he said.

We had two whole teams out this week. It gave Patto a headache trying to juggle the players. The Pig Lures who won on a forfeit from Railway, were split into three teams. Ashleigh was happy to be with Bowls, Beers and Bitches and had some great laughs. Not sure where Chris ended up. The first night back for Bev and straight into the top team.

Patto should be thankful she and Plug were in top form!

Saleyards Moved

The Allora Municipal Saleyards are being moved from Jubb Street to the Allora Showgrounds by a team of volunteers. The move is being made with the permission of the Warwick Shire Council. The yards have a capacity of about 400 head of cattle in 70 pens and will be used for the Allora Show sale and for commercial sales.

Plague Case

The Committee of the Toowoomba General Hospital sent a letter of protest to Dr. Sapsford of Allora for sending a suspected case of Bubonic Plague from his private hospital, to the Toowoomba Hospital by the Clifton Ambulance.

The boy, aged 9, had spent a night in the Allora

hospital before being sent to Toowoomba.

At last report the boy was doing as well as could be expected.

Allora’s Past 150 years ago October 1871

Warwick Police Court

Iasbella Williams, a girl 17 years of age, was brought up in custody, charged with stealing Treasury notes to the value of £2, the property of Mr. John Holmes of the Crown Inn at Allora.

The prisoner pleaded guilty and was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment.

Allora Sports Club Re-Elects Kev Harrison As President

At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Sports Club Kev was elected unopposed for the 16th consecutive year. Other executive positions resulted in Rob Hoey continuing as VicePresident, Greg Patterson as Patron, John Ellwood as Secretary/Treasurer and Wendy Ellwood as Provedore.

Golf Club elections resulted in Lenny Hoey being returned as Club President with a new Golf Club Captain elected in John Ellwood.

We have six chickens and a rooster at the Lister house. The chickens are very friendly and have a really good time wandering around our property pecking at things and laying eggs. But I have decided that this story is about George the rooster because he is the most fabulous bird because of his beautiful feathers and colours.

George is a friendly rooster and never chases us or tries to hurt us with the spines on the back of his feet. Whenever I watch him he’s just making sure that all of the girl chickens are okay and if he hears one yell out because she’s just laid an egg he runs off straight away to check she’s okay.

About two weeks ago George got this bad-looking scaly horrible stuff on his feet which was caused by this tiny insect called a mite which burrows in and eats his feet from the inside. Dad had to spray special oil on George’s feet which would block off the mites’ burrows and kill them from lack of air. George didn’t understand this and so he wouldn’t let us catch him to put the oil no matter how hard we tried because he was so fast.

Eventually Dad and me went into the chicken house when all the chooks were asleep. George was sitting on top of a perch and dad sprayed his feet with no problem. Even though George’s eyes stayed open and he made a funny sound he must have stayed asleep underneath because he didn’t mind being sprayed.

George’s feet have started to get better now and life is normal for all of our chooks.
