Who on earth would consider it a good idea to be married at 9am on Boxing Day?!
Well, in 1962, the young couple pictured, thought it was and, sixty years later, the extended family of Jack and Kate Gordon still consider it a great move.
As the story goes: after a few amorous dances, John Westcott Gordon of Allora cradle-snatched Kathleen Marguerita McGovern of Clifton and they were married in the St James and St John Catholic Church. Life was simple, they worked hard – many locals
will know Jack best from his time in the Allora Advertiser, and lots will know Kate as Mrs Gordon who taught for decades at the Allora State School. Much has happened across 60 years of their partnership but both John and Kate would say that their family is their greatest achievement, their universe. These days you are most likely to catch them basking in the sun on their front verandah in Warwick Street where they have lived almost their entire married life. Congratulations on your 60th Wedding Anniversary, John and Kate!
Congratulations to Robyn, Jan and the team who have made the Railway a popular meeting and eating place in Allora.
L-R - Sarah, Robyn, Rhonda, Red, Darcy and Shelley. A big cheer out to Rhonda and Red who have been with Robyn for the past 15 years. Great stuff!
With the return of the Pantry Section, after 2 years absence from the Allora Show Pavilion, now is your chance to show off your cooking talents. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend some time in the kitchen and practise on your family during the
holiday break. Preserves, plum pudding and fruit cakes can all be made well in advance.
There are sections in the Schedule that cater for all age groups and gender.
Challenge your friends and neighbours to see who may be one of Allora’s best cooks.
See you all at the Allora Show on 10th and 11th February 2023.
Throughout the year the Police Officers in Allora keep our community safe.
To Sergeant Damian Grace and Senior Constable Ben Ogden - we appreciate all the work you do and we know that you’re available if we need help or advice.
Thank you for the service and support you provide to Allora and district.

Last month the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) regional director Adam Ainsworth said all 23 government-owned sites will close following a safety assessment and the investment required to keep the network operating with a lot of the buildings no longer safe for travellers or volunteers.
Last Friday Member for Southern Downs James Lister MP and a group of concerned volunteers and media met at the Gladfield Driver Reviver site which was one of the sites due to be closed by the Department of Main Roads.
It appears, based on news reports, that the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey MP has backed off from definitely closing Gladfield and now says that the future for the
Gladfield site has not yet been determined.
However, Mr Lister is still on the case for the site to remain operating -
“The Gladfield site is the best Driver Reviver you’ll find anywhere, and I think it does great work in keeping down the number of fatigue related road deaths.
“The proud volunteers who staff it just want the Palaszczuk Government to get out of their way and let them do what they do best – providing a friendly cuppa to weary travellers and in the process, saving lives.
“I will continue to work with the community to fight this bad decision to close our driver reviver, and I encourage everyone to sign the parliamentary petition which is on my Facebook page James Lister MP – Member for Southern Downs.” Mr Lister said.

The Warwick Saleyards Redevelopment Project has reached another milestone with Southern Downs Regional Council giving the green light for external contractor EnviroAg to proceed with Stage 1 of the details design for the facility upgrades.
Co-funded by Council, with $4.5m awarded in 2021 under the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program, the improvement project will address viability issues identified from the Master Plan and Business Case including animal welfare, environment, biosecurity, industry standards, traffic management, technology and workplace health and safety.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said securing a sustainable future for the saleyards played an integral part in supporting the region’s biggest industry and looked forward to the project progressing for the economic benefit of the region.
“Council is committed to the region’s livestock industry and maintaining a sustainable and competitive market for the Warwick Saleyards,” Mayor Pennisi said.
“The livestock industry has changed and evolved since the saleyards started operating more than 55 years ago and there is no question that a development of sorts is needed to ensure the
region has quality facilities which meet current animal welfare, best practice standards and industry trends.
“The future of the facility has been the topic of extensive discussion and consultation with the community and industry representatives for many years and it’s great to see this project gain traction.
“We look forward to the future of the Warwick Saleyards and to providing the best possible facility at an affordable price to ratepayers.”
The redevelopment will also importantly allow scope for Council to explore expanding other agricultural industries on the Southern Downs.
EnviroAg was engaged to draft preliminary designs which were finalised and presented to Council in 2021.
