Now open on Thursdays from 12 until 4pm. Glyn Rees invites visitors and locals to view the magnificent display of sporting memorabilia. The Museum will still be open every Sunday afternoon.
Thank you
to this great community of Allora Everything was thrown at us to cancel our Cancer Council Afternoon Tea but we said ‘cancer doesn’t stop because of rain, so nor will we’. And those who were able to get through the waters without danger showed up to enjoy a great afternoon. It’s always so nice to enjoy the company of others, meet new friends and eat scrumptious cake. We sincerely thank you all; those who showed up, those who couldn’t attend yet donated their ticket cost, the many businesses who donated and sponsored and those who helped on the day. THANK YOU.
Together we raised $2010 to be donated to the Cancer Council. George & Kerry Smith of Drayton House Les & Loraine Struthers of Mary Poppins House

Days for Girls had a gathering in April when we packed 90 kits for despatch to Papua New Guinea (PNG). The kits were sent direct to a midwife who does rural walking women’s health clinics, so the kits will help in her work. Would any members of the community be willing to sponsor the postage of future boxes to PNG? Postage is approx. $150. The cancellation of the Heritage weekend has had a major effect on our funding this year as it was our major fundraising opportunity with our multi-draw raffle being held then. We will continue with smaller raffles so any business/individual who would be willing to assist us with ticket sales would be appreciated. There will be more opportunities throughout the year to contribute to disaster relief and other similar activities so the group is requesting donations of: new ladies knickers, small hotel style soaps, new face washers, new 100 per cent cotton (non-stretch) material, sewing thread or monetary donations. Items can be dropped into Cassaz Colourful Curls Allora, Allora True Value Hardware store or Bryson’s Florist Warwick marked Days for Girls. If dropping items in please text, phone or email contacts below so that we know to pick them up. Tax deductible monetary donations over $2 can be made to: Allora Days for Girls, BSB 064 032 Account: 1012 7292. Items or donations can also be handed in on the last Friday of a month. This Friday, 27 May, we will continue assembling kits for a refugee consignment later in the year) as well as offering sewing lessons for those who wish to learn to make components for kits. There will be sewing machines, overlockers and material. Various skill levels from basic beginner to the more complex depending on your confidence level can be catered for. If you’re not into sewing there are other activities to complete. Come along on Friday 27 May at 9am to the Function Room, MacKillop House, Warwick Street, Allora. Please bring a small plate for morning tea, coffee and tea provided. - Allora & district Days for Girls Executive team alloraqld@daysforgirls.org

History abounds in Allora
At the end of Term 1, early years students from St Patrick’s School visited the local Allora Museums. We were greeted by local historians, Jim and Kaye, who volunteered their time so history buffs young and old could understand a past way of life. This excursion allowed students to make connections with the way life used to be and compare it to the way it is now. Having the opportunity to explore artefacts enabled us to make links with what the students had been learning at school. St Patrick’s students asked wonderful questions and were intrigued with the answers of a bygone era. We all decided that if you get the opportunity to visit the Allora museums on their open days, it is worth the trip to discover where our beautiful town of Allora and surrounds originated. Some student reflections are provided for your enjoyment. Today we went to two museums in Allora. First, we saw
a lot of mannequins, they were dressed in olden day clothes. Then we saw a typewriter, they are used for typing. Next, we saw an old classroom, they had wooden desks and chairs. We also saw old cars, they had lots of missing paint. Then we saw a huge windmill, it was rusty and laying on the ground. We also saw a seeder; it was used to put seeds in the ground. We also saw an old crib that rocked. Mrs. H and I found a skull (The Talgai Skull) it was black with white teeth. We saw an old shaver and lots of the tops of them were rusty. After, we saw a little perfume bottle. Lastly, we saw a place where
war people died, it is called a war memorial. (Poppy) Today we went to the Allora Museum. We looked at olden day artefacts. Then we looked at olden day stuff including an old printer, wool table, and wool press. Next, we discovered women’s
Page 7
underwear, it was hugely different from now. Lastly, we found old classrooms, they were little and did not have air conditioners. We found a one-hundred-year-old piano. (Hunter) Mrs Jannita Hentschel, Year 2 Classroom Teacher

USQ assists battle against powdery mildew
A recently developed app aims to make management easier and minimise the impact of powdery mildew on the mungbean industry as part of a project co-funded by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC). The ongoing, unseasonable wet has delivered an additional headache in the form of powdery mildew for mungbean farmers in Queensland and New South Wales. Powdery mildew in mungbean is caused by the fungal species, Podosphaera xanthii and Erysiphe vignae. It initially appears as small white powdery spots, and can spread to cover the entire leaf surface. A disease that impacts mungbean crops annually, powdery mildew, thrives in milder temperatures and high humidity and can lead to yield losses of up to 40 per cent if left unmanaged. With little genetic resistance in current mungbean varieties, management of the disease relies heavily on the application of fungicides. Director of the USQ’s Centre for Crop Health, Professor Levente Kiss, said the PowderyMildewMBM app supported farmers’ fungicide application decisions. “Using tools like this app also helps mungbean growers to make assessments on a paddock by paddock basis and predict the likely economic returns from the sprays,“ he said. “The University of Southern Queensland is really proud to be assisting GRDC in helping growers realise the benefits of the app and supporting them to lower the impact of powdery mildew which is a significant issue.“ Professor Kiss is also leading another project investigating the same issue that is looking at the possible development of resistance to fungicides in crop pathogens. With the support of the Broad Acre Cropping Initiative – a co-investment of the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and USQ – the research team has for the first time recently detected the DNA marker of resistance to a fungicide used to control mungbean powdery mildew. “There is mutation in the DNA of the pathogenic fungi that
Ritemate half button Shirts
causes this crop disease,“ Professor Kiss said. “We have found this in the Darling Downs region and that’s a major red flag,“ he said. “Through our work with the Australian Fungicide Resistance Extension Network, another GRDC-supported project, we hope growers take notice of this finding and make the most of the useful guidelines developed by the Network to apply fungicides more strategically to preserve their effectiveness for many years to come. “These chemistries are still the best, and sometimes they are the only tools we have, to control some of the most significant crop diseases.“

Local Talent Shines in Tough Day at Goondy
Under 7 - The ‘Willett Electrical’ Under 7 wee Warriors under the watchful eye of Coach Shadai Daley were in fine form against a home side that boasted over twenty players. “Wattles played a great game” according to the proud coach, “Archie Moore shining in green & gold”. “Young Archie was fantastic defence, so effective quick ripping tags, scoring try’s that eventuated from nowhere a few times and was hot on Goondiwindi’s heals throughout”. The Under 7 side have certainly hit their straps after just
a month since the opening game of the season, but they could do with some additional numbers, with Coach Daley issuing an invite to any youngsters in the Central Downs who are keen for an opportunity. Under 8 - Coach Tim Johnson was impressed with the very strong team performance by the ‘Railway Hotel, Allora’ Wattles Under 8 lineup against the Goondiwindi Boars. “Wattles effort in defence from all is pleasing to see” according to the coach. Coach Johnson commended his team on their level of improvement every week. Under 9 - It’s been an amazing week for ‘Dalrymple Landscape Haulage’ Wattles Under 9 players what with some gaining Central Downs representative selection, a visit to Goondiwindi matching up against the young Boars and on Sunday afternoon running on to Cbus Stadium on the Gold
Coast to play at half time in the Gold Coast Titans verses Cronulla Sharks National Rugby League clash. Coach George Berry rated his team’s effort in their NRL thriller highly, “a very excited team played very very well in the wet conditions coming away with a 3 tries to 2 win against the Norths Ipswich Tigers.” “The game was over as quick as it started but the kids will remember the experience forever”. Under 10 - It was late in the game before the ‘Black Toyota, Warwick’ Wattles Under 10 side started to click in to gear, seeming a little jet lagged after the lengthy trip west. Talented halfback talent Levi Zadow impressed against the well drilled Boars, as did hard working forwards, enforcer Bryce Bateman and Leo Thompson-Cleary. Wattles fronted with good team numbers, despite the absence of handy back Jackson McMillan due
to illness. Under 11 - The usually challenging road trip to Goondiwindi to play the Boars was not an issue for the “Clifton Auto Ag Repairs’ Under 11 team. The Warriors produced a superb brand of footy to win three tries to two. Tries were scored by Banjo with a great display of eyes up footy from dummy half, Jack Harrigan with good hard running close to the line and the nous to get low to score and William Bishop whose virtual solo effort to run 60 metres untouched left many in the crowd in awe! Under 12 - Coach & Wattles club President Jason Fogarty considered the bus outing to the footy an awesome day and a great team building experience, especially the victory celebration at the Leyburn Hotel on the road home with the young Warriors enjoying pizza and softdrink.

Building Demolition
An historic building erected nearly 100 years ago was in the process of demolition. The building on the corner of Herbert and Drayton Streets was erected in 1890 as a general store for Barnes, Archibald and Company. In the mid 1890’s ownership was transferred to G. P. Barnes & Co. who operated the business until closing in 1939. Holmes & Co. conducted a cash grocery store for a short time in the 1940’s before the building was converted into a service station. After the Stewart family moved Allora Motors to the Warwick and Herbert Street’s corner in 1976, Bob Whitehouse moved his chemist’s shop into the old Allora Motors building. The pharmacy was operated by Elaine McCormick from 1980 until its closure in 1989. The site is now occupied by the Mary Poppins Park. Allora’s Past 75 years ago May 1947
Rugby League
The Clifton juniors defeated the Allora juniors by 3 points to 2 on Sunday at the Allora Show Ground, this being the first time this season the junior team had been defeated. In the senior game, Allora won by 2-nil. The ground was muddy and it was showering lightly throughout the game with the result that the ball became greasy and was difficult to hold. The Clifton backs showed better form than the Allora backs, although these are improving with the progress of the season. The Allora forwards, however,

were quicker and stronger than the Clifton men. Allora won by a free kick by M. O’Dea from a difficult angle.

In response to a requisition, his Worship the Mayor convened a meeting for the purpose of deciding in what manner the town would celebrate the record reign of our Sovereign the Queen. After somewhat lengthy discussion it was resolved to hold a monster picnic and sports, the surplus money going towards the planting of trees in the principal parts of the town. Two separate subscription lists were prepared, one in aid of ornamental trees, the other in the interests of the children. The meeting then chose a general committee consisting of over fifty gentlemen representing the town and surrounding district.
Disastrous Fire
On Sunday last Mr. T. Gibson of Upper Spring Creek had the misfortune to lose several stacks of hay by an outbreak of fire. Six of the destroyed stacks are reported to have been of lucerne and two of wheat, this hay being in sheaves. The stacks are said to have contained up to 100 tons of hay and as they were not insured Mr. Gibson will be a heavy loser. Upon the fire being observed neighbours assembled from all sides but nothing could be done and much sympathy is expressed with Mr. Gibson in his severe loss.

A try and conversion to Ty Betts before the break had Wattles leading 6 – 4. The Coach’s half time chat inspired a Jonte May scoot down the blind side and touch down, his conversion unsuccessful but Wattles boasted a 10-4 advantage. The home side were up to the task though, responding with a try to trail 10 - 8 Second half hooker Declan Fogarty carried two defenders over the line from five metres out to score a well-deserved try. With the Ty Betts conversion, Wattles eased ahead 16 - 8.
With just five minutes remaining Goondiwindi snared their third try to bring the end result of 16 - 12 Wattles way. Under 13 - After the long safari to Goondiwindi it was a long match for the Wattles Under 13’s losing 44 – 0 to their hosts. The ‘Nutrien Harcourt Cooke, Clifton Real Estate’ Warriors were outclassed by a cracker Boars side, but a lesson for the Warriors is to learn to play their own game instead of worrying about the oppositions. Under 15 - While the ‘Nutrien Harcourts Cooke Real Estate’ Under 15 Warriors got edged out by Goondiwindi by a slim 14 – 16
margin, it was a game of positives for the visitors. Winger Rylan Marks made his comeback to the playing field for the first time this season and celebrated with two vital tries. Usually a centre, Rylan crossed to touch down early in the first half and midway through the second stanza. Pat Denny raced in for Wattles final try in the dying minutes of the game. Ben Barbierato converted for a single goal to help achieve his sides total. Under 17 - In another close tussle at Goondiwindi the ‘Hamblin Builders’ Wattles Under 17’s were
edged out 10 – 16. Hamish Gartery and Koby De Luca cashed in for touch downs, while Bryce Stewart kicked a goal. Wattles got away to a less than happy start, trailing 0 – 10 after ten minutes of play, the score holding until half time. The ‘Club Hotel, Clifton’ Wattles’ Ladies League Tag Under 15 & 17 sides enjoyed a bye Round on Saturday. Wattles will be in action this weekend at Platz Oval up against Interstate rivals the Tenterfield Tigers. Be aware though, there will be no Under 8, 10 & 12 games. Glyn Rees
In a history reversal Wattles ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ top grade side’s undefeated run came to an 18 – 12 halt at Gilbert Oval on Sunday afternoon courtesy of the Goondiwindi Boars in a wet and grimy cracker of a contest. This time last season it was Wattles who snuffed out the unbeaten run of the Boars 30 - 22 at Goondiwindi in their charge to an eventual Hutchinson Builders TRL A Grade premiership. Despite the loss, the Warriors remain level with the Gatton Hawks on nine premiership points at the head of the A grade table after the formerly unbeaten Gatton Hawks were beaten by Highfields 14 – 6 also on Sunday. Wattles slick centre Austin Jennings has shrugged off recent injury concerns crossing for two four-pointers against the Boars taking his try total to eleven from just five games. After a lengthy playing absence Boars’ halfback Micky Hazzard returned to front Wattles in the Round 6 clash and won the Lee Group Electrical Player of the round. It’s back to the drawing board for Captain/Coach Travis Burns and his charges as they prepare for an encounter with the Southern Suburbs Tigers next Saturday at Platz Oval. Aside from valuable premiership points, Wattles will be out to retain the annually contested silverware, the Ragh Family Trophy. While the loss has left a nasty taste Captain/coach Travis Burns
is obviously keen to move on and make amends. “As a team we won’t be looking past our next game, a loss can bring you back to earth”. “We’ll be looking at eliminating the simple game issues in this week’s preparation, and I want the players to have a good game for themselves against Souths”. Goondiwindi 18 (Geof-frey Prince 2, Gary Prince, Brandan McGrady tries; Malcolm McGrady goal) defeated Wattles 12 (Austin Jennings 2, Tyson Stevens tries). Reserve Grade - Wattles Garth Lonergan/Nick Morris coached ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ Reserve Grade side were focused on a return to the winner’s circle on Sunday against Goondiwindi, and did just that coming home with a wet sail. After wins over Valleys, Newtown and Warwick to start the season they suffered a 24 – 14 loss in their previous outing at the hands of the Highfields Eagles. The Warriors expected a tough while even contest with the Boars who were boasting two wins from their previous four outings. Co-coach Lonergan was proud of his team for scraping the win together. “We were short in numbers, and Under 19 forward Will Denny and the experienced Mick Duggan joined the line-up for the impressive effort.” Front-rower Mitch Duff and outside back Dale McAntee took Wattles player honours, but Lonergan rated highly his side’s achievement of keeping the Boars
scoreless. While the Warriors were focused on being well on their game on the Boars home turf, they found the try line on three occasions, big Mitchy Duff in for a double and the Boars unable to puncture the green and gold defence. Wattles 18 (Mitch Duff 2, Dale McAntee tries; Tom Morris 3 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 0. Wattles Under 19’s kicked back for a bye on Sunday, as Goondiwindi are not fielding an Under 19 team this season. The Warrior Colts will be in action on Saturday though against
Ipswich side the Redbank Plains Bears. It will be a rugby league Super Saturday all day at Platz Oval this weekend with Wattles Juniors hosting Tenterfield in all junior grades other than Under 8, 10 & 12’s from 8.30 am. TODAY’S QUOTE -
Macintyre Animal and Pet Rescue
On Sunday mum took William, Amelia and I for a drive to Goondiwindi to visit the Macintyre Animal and Pet Rescue (MAPR). The ladies there are really nice and all of the animals there are really well looked after. We got to hold some newborn kittens and puppies and mum let us adopt two kittens. The kittens are white and ginger, and white and grey and they are brother and sister. They are about 8 weeks old and are really playful. We already have two cats named Granville and Norman and all of our pets are named after characters from the great British comedy Open All Hours. So the new kittens needed names and we called Solution below the boy Albert Arkwright and the girl Gladys Cookie. When we got them home we kept them in the cage for 20 min so that our cats could smell them. Norman and Granville hissed a little bit but they were ok. Now they are locked up in William’s room while they get used to their new home. They purr all the time and like to play with feathers on string and chase little balls around the floor. We really love all animals but rescue pets are the best. Jeremy Lister, age 11
