New Owners At Allora Tyres
After almost 17 years of being a big part of Allora’s business scene Anne and Barry Glass have sold Allora & District Tyres to Karren and Jeff Hoare.
Anne has mixed feelings as she enjoyed the interaction with
local customers, many being farmers from around the district. She’s planning to now spend time travelling, riding her horses and visiting the grandkids.
Anne will also be busy helping
Barry out with his Engineering and Welding business.
Welcome to the new owners Karren and Jeff Hoare - both familiar faces around Allora since opening El Caballo, across the
street. This business really suits Jeff who’s a busy hands-on type guy, already feeling right at home amongst the tyres. Long-time employee Richard will remain helping out the customers.

Southern Downs Flood repair program
The Southern Downs Regional Council has been working on flood disaster recovery since March 2020.
In addition to the normal Council works budget, more than $16 million has been spent on the flood repair program to date and a large portion of the works now expected to reach completion by June 2024.
Road Works that are in Progress or have been scheduled for the Allora Region• Bridge Repairs to be carried out on Kital Road, Berat • Culvert Replacement planned for Merivale Street Allora and Talgai West Road, Talgai
Under favourable weather conditions, Council operates a twelve-month capital works program that addresses routine maintenance and includes new projects. However when a flood event impacts the region, a three-month emergency works program
is triggered with funding immediately applied to making the road network safe. Due to back-toback events between November 2021 and May 2022, the focus of works has by necessity been on emergency works to restore safe access across the road network, wherever possible. The compound effect is that the 2020, 2021 and 2022 emergency works programs has put the 2022-23 capital works program back by nine months.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said “We currently have thousands of kilometres of road to repair, circa 300 culverts to replace or refurbish, hundreds of table drains to clean out and more potholes than ever experienced in our lifetime.
“The prediction is that these repairs will take somewhere in the vicinity of two years and that is on the basis that we do not get any further rain.”

Legends of St Patrick’s Ready to Retire
Two generational teachers from St Patrick’s School, Mary Donnelly and Lesley Telford are looking to new horizons and different challenges as they embark upon that elusive gap year or should we say, retirement. Over a combined period of 60 years, both ladies have had instilled a love of learning in hundreds of students from the Allora district.
At the heart of Mary Donnelly’s expertise in the classroom is her ability to foster and build respectful and professional relationships with all of her students. It is this genuine and authentic relationship that has improved the engagement levels of all her students over the course of her career which has been extensive. Her longevity and enthusiasm in the Year 5 and 6 classrooms at St Patrick’s is testament to this fact. She will be greatly missed by both teachers, students and parents who often talk about the ‘Mary Donnelly’ experience where students are not only educated but thoroughly engaged by her wit and intelligence.
Lesley Telford’s connection with St Patrick’s began in the early 1980’s when she commenced as the school’s private music teacher. After 24 years as the school’s music teacher, Lesley feels that the time is right to move on. Lesley is extremely proud of her contribution where the music program
has expanded to include the recorder, marimba, ukulele and various choirs. To quote one of Lesley’s past students. “We thank you for your time and effort put into organising our music sessions. We’ve learnt not to blow too hard on a recorder or we’ll make deaf people even deafer”.
On behalf of the St Patrick’s Parish and School Community we wish both of you good health and eternal happiness in the next phase of your lives. Because ultimately, it is the St Patrick’s way of life.

The Williams sisters, Molly and Mahaillia were at the Allora Regional Sports Museum last Friday to hand over the special spades that were presented to them by former Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie at a celebration in July this year.
The spades have been placed in a display case along with a magic photo
of Laura Geitz, which the sisters handed to Sports Museum secretary Shelley Duggan.
These will go on display at the Museum where they will be held in trust until 2069, when a time capsule buried beneath the obelisk carrying Larua’s statuette, will be brought to the surface.

Life On The Land
- By Trevor Saal
Eighty years of farming and life on the land, 1942-2022
My great grandfather came from Germany in 1852 on a two-year contract with the Leslie Brothers at Warwick.
He bought an allotment in Allora in 1854 and grew vegetables and small crops.
He moved to Spring Creek on 160 acres in 1866.
He was the first to plough land and grow crops in the Spring Creek area.
My grandparents also farmed at Spring Creek and my parent started farming at Pilton in the early 1920s.
So, farming is in my blood.
I left school in 1942 aged 14 and started my life in farming. I could drive a tractor when I was 12.
Life changed a lot in 1938 when the family shifted to an 1100 acre grain farm at Brookstead - plenty of room to move around and
sheep to chase, tractors to drive on the weekend and on holidays.
The main tractors driven in those days were the L Case, Twin City, Massey Harris and Bulldog, at about 25-30 horsepower, all steel wheels.
The main implements were a 14 twin disc plough, 7-6 scarifier, 16.18 run drillif you could plough 20 acres it was a big day.
In the early 1940’s after the war, things were very scarce and hard.
In 1947-48, machinery started to change with more horsepower, rubber tyres and bigger implements and you could cover up to 50 acres a day. In the 1950s, farming changed again with more machinery.
Trevor, now in his 90’s, lives at Pittsworth.

Last Rifle Competition Shoot For 2022
A very heavy downpour early on Sunday 20 November could have put paid to the Stan Buckley Memorial Shoot at the Laurie Bowe Rifle Range for lesser mortals, but the day went ahead as planned. Marg Buckley, her two sons Darren and Gavin and daughter-in-law Donna travelled from Brisbane to represent Stan’s family. Marg presented the trophies and thanked those who attended before the gathering enjoyed a BBQ lunch.
Daph Bowe was presented with a coin purse with plaque attached thanking her for her many years of service to the Club, not least of which is 9 years as Treasurer; the Club was certainly in good hands under her stewardship.
The three Stan Buckley Memorial trophies were won by Cooper Steffen in Junior Open Rimfire with a score of 507.5; Ashleigh Brown in Ladies Open Rimfire scoring 563.15; and Gary Manteit in Mens Open Rimfire with a score of 582.24.
Second and third respectively in the Mens Open Rimfire were
Ben Duggan scoring 575.17 and Jason Edwards scoring 555.14.
In the Ladies Open Rimfire, Helen Manteit was second with 551.9 and third, Marg Sullivan with a score of 433.8.
Ben Duggan shot the Best RBA Card of the Day (235.4/250.25) and Gary Manteit shot the Hunter Class and Rabbit & Crow Best Cards of the Day with scores of 199.11/200.20 and 149.6/150.15 respectively.
After lunch, the Centrefire competition got underway with Gary Manteit scoring .3760 to take out first place. Ben Duggan in second place scored .4516. Helen Manteit scored .4662 for third place and also shot the smallest group of .211.
This was our last rifle competition shoot for the year. Shooter of the Year trophies for Shotgun, Pistol and Rifle will be presented at the Club’s Christmas Party on Sunday 11 December. All members and their families are invited to the party to celebrate a great year of shooting and we look forward to a bigger and brighter 2023. We start shooting again in February 2023. President Helen can be contacted on 0418 791 991 or Secretary Margaret on 0437 661 700.
We wish everyone a very happy and safe Festive season.

Wheat Crop
The dry, clear, hot weather of the past week has brought about a considerable change to the prospects of an abundant harvest in the Allora district. Mr. J. Kelly showed us a sample bunch of his favourite Allora Spring wheat that is well filled with grain in an advanced stage. Mr. C. Wright left at this office a sample of Mummy wheat grown on his farm at Elphinstone. To the top of the ears it is over 6ft in height and the straw is clean and hard, without a sign of rust. Messrs. Gilmore, Abernethy and Tickle of Goomburra, anticipate that some of the wheat in their district will be fit to cut in another week. (Allora Guardian).

The great big BBQ breakfast
On Sunday two of my friends from school came over to my place. One of my brother’s friends also came over but he was a bit later. Mum decided we were going to have a big BBQ breakfast and that we had to cook it ourselves. We didn’t really want to eat at first, so we played handball for a while. Then when we got hungry we went into the music studio and asked mum if we could get started with breakfast. We all voted on which type of eggs we all like and everyone liked scrambled eggs except for my brother William. On the menu was bacon, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, halloumi, mushrooms, zucchini and onion. The only thing that was missing was pancakes. Mum also made us all hot chocolate from the coffee machine with marshmallows. After the huge breakfast we played twister until it was time to go.
