Chandlers Celebrate 75 Years of Marriage
Daphne and Archie met in the Spring of 1945 at the Spring Creek Hall Dance. The two were enjoying their night dancing away with alternating partners to the Jolly Miller Waltz.
As the fairy tale started, the music came to an end with Daph being Archie’s dancing partner. Arch will tell you, at that moment he knew he was going to marry Daph. After a couple of years, Daphne and Archie got married at All Saints Church of England in Clifton.
Throughout their lives, Arch was a farmer and Daphne a dedicated house wife. Raising two boys Leonard and Desmond. Both boys followed in their fathers’ footsteps to become successful farmers as well.

My School Holidays
For my school holidays I have been at the Gold Coast with my family and it’s been good spending time together and taking a time off from school. The first day that we got here we went to the apartments where we’re staying and had a rest because it is a long drive with me and Jeremy and Amelia in the car with mum. Dad came the next day because he was at parliament all week. Where we are is called St George’s Defence Holiday Suites and it is a holiday building for veterans and military families and my mum and dad are veterans because they used to be in the air force. It is right across from the beach at Coolangatta and it is a perfect spot and really great.
When dad arrived the next day it was great to see him again and me and Jeremy went boogie boarding with him and mum and little Amelia played on the sand and paddled at the edge of the water and she tried to catch seagulls. The best part is the fun we have had with surfing. Mum got Jeremy and me two surfing lessons from a man called Dave and we had a blast doing surfing and we can even stand up because the surf at Coolangatta is not too big and we’re used to the really calm water at Hervey Bay where Grandpa and Nanna T live. We have so much fun doing surfing and we make dad stay out with us for two hours till he gets almost too cold because he doesn’t have a wetsuit but Jeremy and me do.
Everyone in our family loves seeing little baby Amelia who is 16 months old run around on the beach and chase the seagulls. She goes to strangers on the beach and she points to the seagulls and she says “ba” and this means birds. And you can’t even look away from Amelia for a millisecond because she heads straight for the water and she even thinks she can swim but she can’t. The two pictures are of Amelia on the beach and me on a surfboard. When people read this we’ll be back home.

Remember the ‘Fatal Five’ When Travelling
The Qld Police Service are conducting Operation Victor Easter over the Easter and school holiday period commencing 1st April until the 16th April 2023. This operation will see local Officers combined with Darling Downs District and other State resources, performing high visibility mobile patrols and static interception sites on all highways and major roads that are traditionally busy over this period of the year. An increased number of travellers coming to and through the area, local families coming home, (while others travel away), plus the commencement of the “grey nomad annual migration” all sees more traffic on the local
roads in our area, than at any other time of year. Police will be out and about to enforce and educate the motoring public with emphasis on the main “Fatal 5” factors of road crashes including Speeding, Drink & Drug Driving, Seatbelts, Fatigue and Inattention (mobile phones); all with view to achieving a fatality free holiday period. Everyone, wants everyone to get to where they are going safely. Please do the right thing, be patient on the road, courteous and considerate of other road users and whatever else you can and may do to ensure a safe and happy holiday Easter period for yourselves, your friends and families.
Motorists Caught Drink Driving
There have been 2 unfortunate incidents over the past week occurring within the Allora – Clifton area; A 30yr old Spring Creek man was charged by Allora Police with drink driving following a vehicle intercept on the New England Highway, just north of Allora on Tuesday night 28th March. The man recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.085% with his licence
suspended for 24hours following the event. Similarly on Saturday evening 1st April, a 37yr old Grantham man, returning through the area after work in Warwick, recorded a reading of 0.065% on the New England Highway, also just north of town. He had been intercepted by a Police motorcyclist from the Warwick Highway Patrol.
Crash on New England Highway
A significant traffic crash occurring only mid-afternoon on Saturday (1st April), when the 4wd vehicle a local Allora man was driving, left the roadway and collided directly with a tree beside the truck pads on the New England
Highway at Clifton. The man was air-lifted to the PA Hospital in a serious condition. While the cause of that crash is under investigation, Police are thankful that no one else was involved.
Bearing all this in mind, local Officers Damian and Ben would like to wish all local residents, family, friends and visitors to the area over the period, a safe and Happy Easter – and for those that believe –that the Easter Bunny manages to find you.
Regards and Happy Easter to all
– Damian F. GRACE, Sergeant 7722, OIC Allora Police Stn. Ph (07) 4666 3222

Gordon
Family Visits Allora Museum
The Allora & District Historical Society had a visit on Friday from Noel Gordon who presented the museum with a timber-framed certificate awarded to his great-grandfather, Andrew Gordon, for sawn timber exhibited at the Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1888.
Andrew Gordon & Co. purchased Hall Bros. sawmill on the north-west corner of Drayton and Forde Streets, and in 1888 operated Allora Steam Saw Mills. The mill was later moved to the head of the Goomburra Valley on a property presently owned by Noel and his brother. The only sign of timber cutting activity still on the property is a half-filled-in and overgrown saw pit near
the creek. Noel, his father, and his grandfather were all carpenters, following the involvement of Andrew Gordon with timber.
At the museum Noel was able to view the portraits of his great-great-grandfather, Samuel Gordon, who was Allora mayor 1873/74 and his great-grandfather, Andrew Gordon, who was mayor in 1892, 1893 and 1899.

Professor Craig Baillie appointed to GRDC
An internationally recognised research leader, who is also one of Australia’s leading agricultural engineers, has been appointed to the position of General Manager of Applied Research, Development and Extension (RD&E) with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).
Professor Craig Baillie will step away from his role as the University of Southern Queensland’s (UniSQ) first Head of School and Dean for Agriculture and Environmental Science to take up the full-time position with GRDC in early June.
In announcing the appointment, GRDC Managing Director Nigel Hart said the Toowoombabased research leader would bring more than 20 years’ experience in applied research, agricultural technology and commercialisation to GRDC.
“Craig is probably best known for leading the UniSQ research team that developed the vision-based precision spray technology incorporated into See &
Spray™ Select that is now in use commercially by John Deere.
“This innovative system uses integrated camera technology to rapidly detect green plants within fallow ground and automatically triggers an application of herbicide. It has made a fundamental difference for grain growers and is an incredible example of science research collaboration with commercial partners.”Mr Hart said.
Professor Baillie was raised on a cotton property in Central Queensland and credits his childhood with fuelling his ongoing passion for agriculture and his dedication to improving farming systems.
“I am really looking forward to joining the GRDC Executive team and I am confident in that role I can continue to make a difference for Australian agriculture,” he said.
“GRDC is the national leader in RD&E investment, and I am keen to be part of an organisation that invests so significantly in research
and is supporting the science behind critical ag technology developments.
“Growing up in Emerald, I understand first-hand the need for improved farming technologies. I believe that ag tech is the way of the future for Australian agriculture, whether it’s driverless tractors or
automated irrigation and it is one of the most important areas we can invest in for farmers.”
Professor Baillie, who will be based in GRDC’s Toowoomba office, replaces Dr Peter Carberry who retires in May after four years as GRDC’s General Manager of Applied R&D.

Saturday 11 March
2023 saw Allora Amateur Swimming Club Inc. hold their annual Club Championships, which marked the end of the Club season. There were doubts as to whether the day could proceed given the forecasted rain, however the weather Gods were with us, and the rain held off for the proceedings.
It was an actionpacked day in the pool enjoyed immensely by both swimmers and spectators. It was great to see and hear swimmers cheering on their mates in the pool. There were 25 records broken as well as 5 new records created. Bailey Harm had
an exceptional day in the pool breaking the record in all 10 events that he swam in. Records broken by Bailey of particular note were the Open Mens 200m breaststroke where Bailey broke the record by almost 20 seconds and the Open Mens 200m backstroke where Bailey broke the record by over 40 seconds.
Aiden Brown broke 3 records in the multiclass category and created 5 new records in this category also.
The longest standing record broken was in the girls Under 8 years age group with Sylvie Moore breaking the 50m backstroke record previously set by Melissa Willet in 1993.
Trophies were awarded to age champion and runner up age champion in each age group as well as personal best trophies for the highest number of personal best times achieved throughout the season.
A new trophy was introduced this year in memory of former Allora Swimming Club member Nicky Haig. Nicky was an energetic and enthusiastic member of Club who enjoyed Club nights and the social opportunities it offered to the full. The Nicky Haig Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Club member who embodies the spirit and essence Allora Swimming Club of
enjoyment, participation and encouragement of others. The shield was presented by Nicky’s parents, Tony and Kerry Haig, to the inaugural winner, Ella Hutchison.
Country Coach Of The Year - Andrew Fidge. The Allora Swimming Club extends a huge thank you and congratulations to Fidgey for all he does for our squad swimmers.
We wish all swimmers competing at the Australian Age Championships in April the very best of luck. We hope everyone enjoys the ‘off season’ and we look forward to seeing you all back in the pool for the 2023/2024 season.

Dalby Diehards Successful in Rod Frahm Cup Clash
The Wattles Warriors reigning premier top graders fell short of resurrecting themselves after their recent unsuccessful Barrett Family Shield challenge against the Warwick Cowboys, losing the season opener Round 1 clash to the Dalby Diehards on Saturday evening at Dalby.
The Diehards snatched the match in the later stages 35 – 28 regaining the prestigious Rod Frahm Memorial Cup, the silverware contested annually between the two clubs.
A Wattles club Life Member and Clifton business identity, Rod Frahm also shared a close association with Dalby rural industry.
The cup named in his honour was first contested in 2007, and since then Wattles have secured the award on seven occasions and the Diehards nine.
The ‘Stillwater Pastoral’ Warriors first minutes in the 2023 Toowoomba Rugby League fixtures saw the loss of up-andcoming three quarter Lachlan Henry who left the field with a game ending head knock.
Henry has been a player on the rise in recent seasons, and looks to have cemented a slot in Wattles A grade line up, with coach Travis Burns looking forward to the youthful centre back in action in the team’s next outing. The coach felt his team had much of the running of the first stanza, “our defence scrambled well, but a few shortcomings and costly errors cost us, a couple of opportunist tries stood Dalby in good stead.”
“Our structure worked well, and while a loss I am reasonably happy with how we went.”
Dalby 35 defeated Wattles 28

Reserve Grade - Wattles ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ Reserve grade line up continued on their winning way after a recent trials success over the Warwick Cowboys, with an impressive 20 – 10 win over Dalby.
While the Warriors still have some players in contention to return to their line-up, Coach Tony Morris was more than pleased with his team’s performance.
“Our backs and forwards all stood strong across the park, and executed the game plan in ideal fashion.
Toyota, Warwick’ Warrior’s armour. Sheppard paid the price for a lifting tackle, that was considered by some judges as harsh judgement.
Talented five-eight Judd Rei was another unable to finish the game after an injury in a lifting tackle that saw his opponent incur a penalty.
Coach Cameron Hamblin was short on numbers in the ranks, after such an impressive showing last week in a 16 all draw with Warwick.
“Dalby were just too strong” said a disappointed Coach, but praised those that did run on, “despite the scoreboard, the players held their own.”
Allora Hardware Duck Run - After the recent rain, the course is looking beautiful!
On 21 points, Ty won Friday’s duck run, 1 point ahead of Garth on 20 who was runner-up on a count back from Moose. Nearest the pin on the 16th was won by Moose, the long putt on the 11th by Jimmy and the approach on the 14th by Aaron. Thank you Allora Hardware
Railway Hotel Allora Monthly Mug - The ever consistent John Sparksman took out April’s Railway Hotel Monthly Mug on Sunday with a score of 38 points. Second was John “C grade champion” Ellwood only 1 shot behind on 37 and Kenny Wilson coming in 3rd on 32 points. The approach on the 3rd went to Martin, visiting from Proserpine, and on the 14th to Neil Chandler. The longest putt on the 1st was won by John S and the 10th to John E. Thanks to the Railway Hotel Allora. Well done all.
Congratulations to Willy’s Wiring for a great day on Saturday raising approximately $5,000 for Ronald McDonald Charity House.
Wattles 20 (Tim Hentschel 2, Garth Lonergan, Travis Pitman tries; Jordan Henry 2 goals) defeated Dalby 10

Dalby 40 defeated Wattles 6 (Lachlan Hearn try: Koby De Luca goal).
