Police, paramedics and fire and emergency services crews attending the scene of the crash. A spokesperson for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said the crash happened at about 2.24 on Thursday afternoon.

They said the incident was labelled as a single vehicle rollover. QFES crews found the car flipped on its side against a tree off the Warrego

Highway near the vicinity of Brimblecombe Road. The sole occupant of the vehicle was entrapped until emergency services arrived.

Two QFES crews were dispatched to the scene, where they used hydraulic tools to remove the person from the vehicle. - Continued on page 3

Mysterious call to police May is DV prevention month about high school fire

Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Month is a reminder to all Queenslanders that ending this form of violence is everyone’s responsibility.

A spokesperson from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) said they were alerted about a potential fire at Oakey State High School on the 25th April. “We got a call at about 9.30pm from someone claiming that there were people trespassing into the school yard and that they were going to start a fire,” he said. “However when we got there, we did a full sweep of the school grounds with Queensland Fire and

Emergency Services (QFES) but couldn’t find anyone trespassing. “There was no evidence of any fires or fire damage either. “It seems like a bit of a non-event from our end. “We didn’t file any reports.”

A spokesperson from QFES said they also received reports of a building on fire at 9.30pm. “We sent out two crews, but they didn’t find anything,” she said. “They joined forces with the police in searching the grounds, but left after no evidence could be found.”

Acting Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Meaghan Scanlon said this year’s theme for DFV Prevention Month is All of us, together. “This year’s theme is about all of us, working together to make sure our workplaces, our schools and our communities are safe and respectful,” she said. “We know changing attitudes around violence and instilling respect for women is crucial in ending domestic and family violence.” This year’s DFV

Prevention Month would once again aim to promote partnerships and collaborations across the community to prevent and respond to DFV. “To raise awareness, several events will be taking place across the state, including candlelight vigils in many communities, the Light up the night Charity Gala hosted by the LGBTQ DFV Awareness Foundation, and the annual Darkness to Daylight event, hosted by Challenge DV, which closes off DFV Prevention Month,” Ms Scanlon said

More events continue to be added each week on the online events calendar at www.qld.gov.au/dfvpmonth. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic and family violence, support is available at the DVConnect Womensline on 1800 811 811 (24 hours, 7 days) or DVConnect Mensline on 1800 600 636 (9am-midnight, 7 days). If there is an immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for police. For more information, visit qld.gov.au/ domesticviolence.

“This is all about uniting the community and engaging kids positively,” she said. “We do this every Thursday at 3pm and stay

until whatever time people want to stay for. “It’s great because we get all the kids when they’re leaving school walking past us.

“Heaps of them come up to us and grab a bite to eat when they’re walking home.” Senior Constable Vincent Bradley from the Toowoomba PCYC said this program could be coming to an end soon. “We have only been given funding for this program until June this year,” he said. “This funding also includes Kat’s position as Oakey Youth Connect Program Coordinator. “We’re trying to secure more funding and get the program coordinator position extended for at least another year. “But at this stage we don’t know. “We really need the funding so that we can have some sort of presence in Oakey, which allows us to engage with the youth. “We really need to get the word out.”

WITH

Pat WEIR MP The health system in Queensland is past breaking point. Every day we are hearing more stories of patients left waiting sometimes for hours to be seen by a health professional and ambulance ramping is worsening statewide. New data obtained last week by the LNP Opposition reveals more than one in four patients in the Darling Downs region are being left on stretchers, corridors, and hallways for longer than 30 minutes. Ambulance ramping is at 27 percent an increase of 4 percent from November 2021. The government has no plan to fix this growing problem. People’s lives are at risk and potentially could lead to more Queenslanders dying whilst waiting in ambulances. The LNP has offered solutions to this problem, however the Palaszczuk government is not listening. They would prefer to blame the Federal government instead of taking responsibility for health in Queensland, which is a state responsibility after all. Everyone seems to know this except this state government. I don’t want my elderly mother to be waiting in an ambulance when she requires urgent medical care, each and every one of us deserves a health system we can trust and that is working. The millions of dollars of taxpayers money provided for the Queensland Regional Quarantine facility at Wellcamp could have been spent on providing more health workers, more beds, better resourcing for triaging and real-time data monitoring. Instead, Queenslanders are subsidising a facility that has had a very small number of occupants since it’s fanfare opening in January 2022. As winter approaches so too does the flu season. I would urge you all to have your flu vaccination, stay home if you are unwell and keep our community safe.

Only four of the eight candidates attended the event - Independent Suzie Holt, Australian Federation Party’s Ryan Otto, United Australia Party’s Melissa Bannister and One Nation’s Grant Abraham. Each of the four candidates gave a prepared speech outlining their goals and visions for Groom, then a panel-discussion ensued with questions from the audience.

Suzie Holt. Independent candidate Suzie Holt, who is representing the group Voices for Groom, worked as a social worker and volunteer throughout the region. “I believe in people, not parties,” she said. “Policy, not petty politics. “I have a local team who believes in the same things. Ms Holt said she has a big picture approach and wants to grow Groom by tackling big issues like health and agriculture. “We want to make Groom the region of choice. “We’ve been hearing from our community that they want a vision for all of Groom. “Groom is not just Toowoomba. “It’s also the hubs of Pittsworth, Oakey, Jondaryan, Westbrook, M e r i n g a n d a n , G o o m b u n g e e , Kingsthorpe, Highfields and surrounding areas.” “We need investment and infrastructure, particularly regarding water security and technology. “We need to bring government investment to Oakey, because right now it’s not happening because Groom is too safe. “Right now when we do get funding for defence, the tender process only benefits large companies and not small local businesses. Australian Federation Party candidate Ryan Otto was a former maths and science teacher at Toowoomba State High School until he was stood down due to the vaccination mandate.

Grant Abraham.

Melissa Bannister.

passports,” he said. “Instead of spying on people, we plan on using that momentum to create an app that will allow them to directly view upcoming legislature and provide polls, surveys and input to create that community engagement.” One Nation Candidate Grant Abraham has had a 25 year career in youth justice, child safety, and corrections, including ten years in the police force. Mr Abraham is born and raised in Toowoomba and has spent most of his life in the region. “My personal decisions about my health and choice not to get vaccinated were in conflict [with QPS], so we parted our ways. “My entry to politics was birthed out of a complete frustration for the way our country is going. “I feel like we’ve lost a lot of our Australian culture. “Over the last three decades, it’s slowly been going further and further backwards. “The last two years was the exclamation mark on the end of the journey for me. “I thought, don’t whinge and complain about something you’re not prepared to do yourself. “So that’s why I put my hand up to be a voice for our community. “I want to keep the wealth within our country and for our people,” he said. “We are importing way

too many goods that could be made here. “We need to revisit the concept of the Bradfield scheme and see if that can be reignited and introduced here in Groom for water security.” United Australia Party candidate Melissa Bannister is also a lifelong Toowoomba local and comes from a health background. “My parents built their first home here in Oakey on Hamlyn Road. “I’ve spent 33 of my 34 years here in the Toowoomba area. “I spent six years with Queensland Health where I was the consumer and community engagement officer. “We are elected to serve you. Not lobbyists, not our mates, not our parties and not for corporations. “If we keep voting the same, we’ll keep getting the same.” Ms Bannister said her party’s main goals are paying off the national debt by introducing a 15 per cent export licence on all unprocessed iron ore. She also said the party wants to freeze fuel excise and reduce tax on a person’s second job. “We want to increase the age pension to $180 per fortnight. “We want to look at forgiving and helping people pay off their hecs fees. Ms Bannister concluded by stating her support of New Hope Acland Mine.

Ryan Otto.

Mr Otto also joined the convoy to Canberra in February where he camped in front of parliament for two weeks in an effort to overturn the mandates. “I was given the ultimatum of take a jab or lose my position and everything that I’ve worked for at university since 2014,” he said. “I had a bad allergic reaction to a tetanus jab last year and didn’t want to take the risk. “Ever since I’ve been unemployed, so I’ve been running this campaign on a shoestring budget.” Mr Otto said he is a former ‘donkey voter’ due to being disenfranchised with politics previously. He idolises Plato’s theory of direct democracy where voters vote on every decision and law that is passed. “The average person today stands voiceless, unable to effectively communicate with their representatives and contribute valuable ideas, he said. “I pledge that every month we will hold a community meeting with an open agenda where people can ask me any questions they want.” He also said that his party wants to use technology to hear the voice of the people, not against the people. “The Australian Federation Party is working on using the current infrastructure of QR code apps and vaccine

Winter Shelter Toowoomba is a charity that offers accommodation and support services to the city’s homeless people. This fundraiser is the 28th Toowoomba Mayoral Prayer Breakfast and will be held at Rumours International on Tuesday 24th May 2022 and is open to everyone in the community. Cr Antonio said he was pleased to see the charity breakfast return after COVID-19 restrictions forced the event to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. “Winter Shelter Toowoomba is backed by Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland in conjunction with seven church organisations and support services to house up to ten homeless people a night over winter,” he said. Participating churches

include Toowoomba West Anglican Parish, St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Hume Ridge Church of Christ, South Toowoomba Baptist Church, Belong Church, Toowoomba City Church partnering with Reform Church and the Rangeville Community Church. “Our Region is fortunate to have numerous support services that assist people who are experiencing difficulties in different aspects of their lives,” Cr Antonio said. “The Toowoomba Mayoral Prayer Breakfast has the distinction of being one of the few events of its kind in Australia that is completely supported by its home businesses and organisations with proceeds delivered back to a chosen charity. “Many supporters, such

as TAFE Queensland South West (with their hospitality and cooking students and teachers), Rumours, generous food suppliers and service groups have been loyal and valuable backers from the first function. “I again thank all business people and volunteers for contributing to the function, which has raised around $300,000 for more than thirty charities in this Region.” Acting General Manager of TAFE Queensland South West Region Jenni Butler said this event will offer students hands-on learning and practical experience. Residents are invited to join the community breakfast at Rumours International, 323 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba from 6am on Tuesday 24th May. Tickets are now on sale.

The funding will allow Bridgeport’s Moonie Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Project in the Surat Basin to provide safe storage of CO2 in the Moonie oil field. New Hope Group CEO Rob Bishop said the funding will help fasttrack development of CCUS technology which is important to the transition to a low-carbon economy. “We’re proud to be a key player in the creation of Queensland’s first carbon hub and help unlock pathways to a low-carbon future,” he said. “Thanks to Federal funding, CO2 emissions from the Millmerran Power Station in the Darling Downs will be captured, transported and stored at Bridgeport’s Moonie CCUS facility.

“Bridgeport’s Moonie CCUS project plans to initially capture and inject 55,000 tonnes per annum of CO2 into Bridgeport’s Moonie-27 injection well. “By 2028, up to 1 million tonnes per annum of CO2 is planned to be injected, extending the life of the Moonie oil field which has been operating for over 60 years and transforming its use for CO2 storage. “New Hope is committing $27.5 million investment in the project alongside the $15 million Federal grant for a total project value of $42.5 million. “We’re committed to building a sustainable and resilient business that will support the needs of our customers and stakeholders, while investing in emission reduction initiatives.”

Declining number of volunteers

Australian Sports Foundation research shows volunteers are in decline, however they have posed a solution. Volunteers are the backbone of community sports clubs across Australia, and we all know someone who almost single-handedly keeps a sports club afloat and running smoothly. Research from the Australian Sports Foundation showed 42 per cent of sports clubs reported a decline in volunteering, in large part due to the increase in workload, pressures and responsibilities of implementing COVID-19 protocols. The Australian Sports Foundation and CLUBMAP are proud to announce an exciting new partnership to guide Australian community sporting clubs to success, both on and off the field. The initiative will focus on delivering to the volunteers on committees and in organisational roles, strategic advice,

resources and taxdeductible fund-raising opportunities with importance placed on revenue generation and good governance in sports committee structures. Further, both the Australian Sports Foundation and CLUBMAP recognise that tomorrow’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes are participants in community sport right now and together the organisations can create a ten-year pathway for athletes from all corners of Australia. Let’s retain critical volunteers and upskill them and make their life easier so everyone can benefit from their local community sports clubs. Australian sporting clubs in need of financial or structural support are invited to join a free webinar, presented by CLUBMAP and ASF on Monday 9th May.

Norco announces More farms eligible for Regional pricing increase Investment Corporation loans

Norco has announced that members of the co-operative will receive an additional 5 cents per litre for all milk supplied during May and June 2022. The board of directors and the management team are aware of the rapidly increasing costs of production and the unprecedented challenges that members face as a result of the recent natural disasters that have occurred throughout the Norco supply base. While Norco has been impacted at a number of its sites by the recent floods in Lismore, the Norco board and management met two weeks ago. Chairman of Norco Co-operative Michael Jeffery said at the meeting they discussed the operational financial performance of the co-

operative year to date along with the need to provide immediate support to the members. “The announcement of the additional cooperative premium payment of 5 cents per litre is in recognition of the conditions on farm and the need to provide immediate additional support to aid in the recovery,” he said. “Norco remains committed to passing on price improvement wherever possible and is currently exploring opportunities to deliver further price improvement for its members in the upcoming 22/23 financial year.”

Helping Aussie farmers manage pests and diseases

Grants of up to $2 million will help Aussie farmers access safe and effective chemical solutions to manage priority pests and diseases that can damage crop and livestock. The final round of the Australian Government’s 11-year $26 million assistance grants will be used to provide farmers with the priority agvet chemicals they need to improve

productivity. Learn more about the assistance grants at https:// www.awe.gov.au/agriculturel a n d / f a r m - f o o d - d ro u g h t / ag-vet-chemicals/improvedaccess-agvet-chemicals/agvetassistance-grants.

Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) concessional loans will become available to additional farm businesses from 1st July 2022. More farm businesses will be able to apply for Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) loans under a revised definition of ‘farm business’ resulting from a public consultation process. Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said the expanded definition will allow more farm businesses to apply for concessional loans to support the long-

term strength, resilience and profitability of their businesses. “I welcome this change of definition as it allows RIC loans to be made to additional industries that are contributing to the agricultural industry’s target of a $100 billion sector by 2030,” he said. “From 1st July 2022, the revised definition will make the RIC’s concessional loans available to a number of

new industries, including the thoroughbred breeding, turf farming, nursery, floriculture, and medicinal crop industries. “RIC loans provide vital assistance to farmers and encourage growth, investment, and resilience in Australia’s rural and regional communities. “The eligibility update follows industry and public consultation completed by the RIC in late 2021 that

asked if the loan eligibility should be expanded, to which most agreed. “Businesses in the newly eligible industries will still be required to meet the RIC’s existing loan eligibility requirements, including to be in financial need of a loan and be financially viable in the long term.” For more information visit the RIC website at www.ric.gov.au.

A new super round of Queensland’s largest one-off funding grants has been announced to support community groups impacted by the recent natural disasters. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said $30 million has been set aside for the next round of the GCBF to help local community groups recover from the recent flooding events. “We know recovery for our Queensland

communities following a natural disaster will take a long time,” she said. “That’s why we have combined the May and August 2022 rounds of the GCBF to create a supersized Disaster Recovery Round. “Any community group that has been impacted by a natural disaster in the last two years can apply for a grant of up to $100,000. “Applications from community groups for

other non-recovery related projects are still welcome in this new round, however the funding for projects not linked to a natural disaster will be limited to the standard grant amount of up to $35,000. “The Disaster Recovery round will open on 16th May 2022 and close on 15th July, which we hope

will give groups enough time to assess the damage to their facilities and equipment and work out what they need to get up and running again.” For more information about the Disaster Recovery Round, visit https://www.justice.qld.gov. au/initiatives/communitygrants/current-round.
