The local student has completed her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and at Care Charley’s Place through education provider Kath Dickson Institute of Early Childhood Studies. Sydney is now the first Oakey High School student to commence studies towards a Diploma while she is still at school. Oakey State High School Vocational Projects Officer Haley Darr said Sydney is a great example of someone suited to working in early childhood education. “Sydney is very passionate about working with children and I think it comes through when
she talks about working in the industry,” Ms Darr said. Via the online awards announcement Sydney said the Certificate III has given her a clear career path. “The training I have received has changed my life because I really had no idea what I wanted to do and being given the opportunity to do my traineeship has given me a solid pathway,” she said. Local pharmacy offers Police called following high school lockdown COVID-19 vaccine
The Oakey Pharmacy has commenced administering COVID-19 vaccines to Oakey residents providing an alternative location for residents to get their vaccination.
Nathan Jervis from The Oakey Pharmacy administers a vaccine to Jen Schuller. The Oakey Pharmacy’s Nathan Jervis said he commenced providing vaccines on Thursday and has already seen a positive response from the community. He said the process is simple and mostly painless. “Jump on our Facebook page, ‘The Oakey Pharmacy’ and we have a link
there that they can book online or give us a call on 4691 1048 and book in,” Mr Jervis said. “You can also go to the Federal Government’s website (https://covidvaccine.healthdirect.gov.au) and it will direct you to us.” Mr Jervis said the process starts with filling out a suitability form.

Ms Darr said Keesha’s efforts are another first for Oakey State High School. “No one else has achieved this,” she said. “The training Keesha is doing has had a big impact on her life.” Other locals who were finalists include Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician student Hans (HL) van der Merwe who was top three in the Apprentice of the Year award and his employer Oakey Beef Exports who was a finalist for the Large
“If you’re suitable, you can get the vaccine and then you will have to wait for 15 minutes afterwards. Then it’s good to go,” he said. The pharmacy currently only offers the AstraZeneca vaccine but is hoping to expand to Pfizer or the Moderna in coming months. Mr Jervis said it is preferred that residents over 60 get this vaccine but locals of all ages are able to make an appointment. He said people under 60 will have a risk assessment and consent process. Police attended the Oakey State High School on Wednesday after a disturbance caused the school grounds to go into a short lockdown. A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the lockdown was a result of a student behaviour issue. “Oakey State High School went into lockdown Wednesday 28 July for approximately 15 minutes as a precaution in response to a student behaviour issue,” the spokesperson said. “Parents have been informed and support will be provided by the school’s Guidance Officer to any students that may request it. “Students involved have been dealt with appropriately under the school’s Student Code of Conduct. “Due to student privacy
no further information can be provided.” Oakey Police Senior Constable Warren Schefe said police attended the school but no further action was taken. “Police attended after
the lockdown had ended,” he said. “We weren’t required to take any official action. He said police undertook extra patrols in the area after 3pm on Wednesday as a precaution.

TO THE PAST
A Variety of Businesses
Following the departure of the second “Attic” from 3 Cherry Street, the next business to take occupancy of Shop 2 was Video & Convenience (ca. 1995), the proprietors being Dennis and Sharyn Flanagan. After the closure of the Oakey Drive-In in 1984, several video shops operated
to fill the void. Prior to their move to 3 Cherry Street, the Flanagans had already conducted video shops in two different locations - Oakey Video Centre (ca. 1987) in Shop 3, Oakey Arcade, Campbell Street and Oakey Video & Sound Centre at 86 Campbell Street (ca. 1990).
While in Shop 2 at 3 Cherry Street, Dennis re-fitted and insulated the interior of the shop. Next in line, came a request from Derek Tuffield to open a LifeLine Store in Oakey and after an interview with Desley Weise, this came to fruition with the opening of LifeLine in Shop 3 on August 8, 1997 with Desley as the local manager, a position she held on and off for many years. On June 30, 2000 after the video shop left Shop 2, LifeLine expanded into there where it remained at 3 Cherry Street until moving to a new location in Campbell Street which was believed to be more convenient for customers. This new store (formerly a drapery store) was officially opened on February 6, 2017.

State government water Study continues into assessment kicks off future use of Depot
The State Government has commenced it’s $3 million Southern and Darling Downs Regional Water Assessment initiative which will investigate water supply needs across the Toowoomba, Southern Downs and Goondiwindi and parts of the Western Downs. Once complete, the assessments will set out how existing infrastructure, new infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions can be used to maximise water supply in each area and drive economic growth. Potential sources of water supply will be considered across boundaries of local government areas and catchments to maximise benefits, increase the effective use of existing infrastructure, and minimise costs. To kick-off the assessment the Southern and Darling Downs advisory group including local council representatives,
industry stakeholders and representatives from Sunwater, met for the first time recently. Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said the first meeting was productive. “The advisory group is looking forward to identifying the opportunities that will best serve the Southern & Darling Downs region. “Local expertise and experience will be essential to getting the right solutions for each region and we welcome local mayors, council representatives and leading industry bodies and thank them for engaging with us.” “The program will build
on previous studies to ensure we’re making the best use of our existing knowledge and efforts as we develop a comprehensive strategy to address future water supply needs. “Next steps include engaging with stakeholders to identify the future water demands for the area as well as compiling a comprehensive list of all relevant previous investigations and projects in order to build on that knowledge.“ For information go to: www.rdmw.qld.gov.au/water/ consultations-initiatives/ regional-water-assessmentprogram

A TRIED AND TRUE RESOURCE Throughout our lives all of us have experienced times when things go ‘pear-shaped’, become uncomfortable and, even worse, we can become upset, betrayed, suffer loss of friendship, become ill and have to undergo a period of healing or time of constant supervision by medical people. Then there are those devastating times when we face the death of loved ones. Another scenario is that of the work-scene. Life can go swimmingly when you are in paid employment in a job that you like, and one where you feel that you are helping others in their lives. Out of the blue, conditions beyond your control change all that and you may find yourself out of a job, now having to look around for another job. The feelings we, as humans, experience cause us to be discouraged, to suffer lack of confidence, to feel as though we are carrying a huge load on our shoulders. We may think that no-one loves us and that the whole world is against us. From these feelings we can become desperate in our loss, from one or more of the cases mentioned above, and not know where we can get some form of help from. These days we have many organisations which have been established to help people who are suffering from a large number of traumas. Most of the methods of help use a listening ear to listen to what we can say about our situations, where we can try to verbalise what we feel. Some give ideas of how we can move out of the feelings we are experiencing. In all of these, each one of us has to want to act for ourselves, and not expect healing to come without effort from our part. Back in 1855, Joseph Scriven, who was living in Canada, wrote a poem for his mother who was in Ireland, as a comfort for her. This poem became a very well-known hymn, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”. In this hymn we have the words which give us positive moves, that if we take all our problems to Jesus, in prayer, we can find peace and comfort. To be able to do this, we have to have faith in Jesus as our Saviour. Those who have such a faith still suffer, as all humans do, but seem to be able to travel through their ‘low’ times and recover to at least some extent knowing the ‘peace that passes all understanding’. So, when we are feeling dejected, despised, forsaken – take it to the Lord in prayer! - Daphne Webster OAM Pastor, Oakey & District Uniting Church
TRC Property Services portfolio leader Cr James O’Shea said the proposal to develop a business case for future uses of the site was endorsed in January. He said the current site analysis will inform this business case. “This analysis comprises complex land designation matters and other business case development requirements, including detailed scope development, ongoing stakeholder engagement, financial, risk, and implementation processes,” Cr O’Shea said. “Once the business case development is completed, the final report, including
recommendations, will be presented to Council for consideration. “Council is determined to see the site returned to productive use for the benefit of the Oakey community.” The business case which Council is investigating involves keeping some community use of the site as well as creating a Business Incubator and Training Hub centre within the facility, which may involve connecting with the high school and tertiary training providers to promote business growth and develop employment opportunities, especially for young people.

Oakey QCWA welcomes new committee
The QCWA Oakey branch is looking forward to a prosperous and jam-packed next 12 months following its Annual General Meeting last week with Wendy Gordon continuing her leadership position alongside treasurer Carol Lee, vice president Jill Mobbs and secretary Lois Speed OAM. Community member and Oakey Show Society president Judy Byers chaired the meeting on behalf of the organisation. In reflecting over her first term as president, Mrs Gordon said COVID-19 has continued to bring challenges but that the QCWA has managed to achieve a lot during the
uncertain times. She said relationships with non-profit groups and programs, such as Protea Place, Box Off the Streets and the Oakey Show Society has enabled the branch the connect with and assist new people. She said in total branch members recorded over 870 volunteer hours
Catching up in Condamine WITH
Pat WEIR MP Roads are an integral part of all our lives. We use them to travel to our places of work, transport our families and socialise on an almost daily basis. Every day roads are utilised to carry commodities, freight, and goods to meet our needs. We would hope that safety was paramount to all road users and the condition of our roads would be maintained to a high standard. The Condamine Electorate office receives a significant amount of correspondence from constituents regarding road issues, with their main concerns being the poor quality of the road and the inadequate maintenance of the roads they have to travel on. Condamine being a regional electorate has a large number of agricultural and manufacturing businesses utilising these road networks for business activities frequently and often with heavy loads. I have been calling on funding for the Clifton-Leyburn road and finally there have been monies allocated for repairs and pavement seals. These funds will go some way to improve the road conditions however it will be more of a patching job when a complete reconstruction is required for some parts of the road, like many of the regional roads in Queensland. During my time as the Member for Condamine I have asked quite a lot of questions of the Minister about the condition of our roads and when funding will be available to ensure the road is safe to traverse. Most of these requests have fallen on deaf ears.
with countless more not officially reported. Mrs Gordon thanked the outgoing committee for its support over the 2020/2021 year, especially treasurer Kara Grant who stepped down from the executive. “I would like to thank the members of the executive for [their] support and encouragement over the past 12 months,” she said. “It certainly has been a challenging year with the uncertainties regarding the pandemic. “I especially want to thank Kara [Grant} for her effervescence and enthusiasm that she has shown over the past few years as she completes her time as treasurer. “I look forward to the coming year.” Member for Condamine Pat Weir commended the Oakey QCWA on their efforts over the past year. He said the last 97 years since the local branch opened shows the enduring importance of the organisation. “The aspects of the QCWA has changed over the years but the importance of the QCWA has not. We saw that recently during the drought and bushfires. The role the QCWA played in that is evident,” Mr Weir said. “I congratulate the
