How the Woolshed should operate
With Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) yet to provide any plans for the future of the historic Jondaryan Woolshed, an internal report compiled by a Council officer from discussions with community members and volunteers reveals the ongoing problems plaguing the facility and details a clearer vision for the local attraction. The leaked report titled ‘Volunteers Vision for Jondaryan Woolshed’ details recommendations from a “volunteer’s perspective” which Council may use to create a plan for the future for the facility. According the document, although the Woolshed’s ongoing closure is put down to COVID-19 and safety issues, the problems with the entity “are far more deep rooted than these issues alone”. It lays blame at the management of the facility over the last ten years for the problems at the site with the Woolshed now losing touch with its core purpose and community expectations. “Most of the volunteer base would agree that watching the management and administration of the Woolshed over the last ten years has been like watching a car crash in slow motion,” the report stated. “The key issue at the Jondaryan Woolshed is essentially the balancing act of fiscal responsibility versus social and cultural needs. “[The General Manager]

The woolshed was a hive of activity during the last Jackie Howe Festival held in 2016. presents an unchallenged tyrannical rule over the facility and play[s] a dominant role in dictating strategic direction of the facility, often without consultation with the volunteer base or community. “With the revolving
door management at the Woolshed (at least six over the last ten years), the volunteered base sits in a constant state of heightened anxiety.” Through discussions with volunteers, the report makes recommendations to restructure the
management of the Woolshed but without moving the facility out of Council’s control. This includes breaking the current operations into three sections - events, museum and the caravan park. Continued on page 3

‘Bruce owner of AquaGuard knew exactly the quality of water out here and recommended/sold us an IEX or Ion Exchange Water Softening System for the whole house. The System removes the hard minerals totally making it impossible for them to build up in pipes and appliances. He said that breaking them down is simply shifting the problem from one place in a home to another. Local boy is newest mini meat cooking champion
Local boy Brayden Barnes is following in the footsteps of his grilling enthusiast parents Jess and Mitchel Barnes winning the KidsQue BBQ competition at held at SmokeFest in the Gold Coast earlier this month. This was Brayden’s first competition and to top off the achievement the fouryears-old boy was the youngest competitor in a field featuring entrants up to 15-years-old. His steak cooking skills took the win, thanks to only a little bit of help from Mitchel cutting and turning the meat for safety reasons. The senior team, the Smooth & SmOakey Salad Dodgers, placed fifth overall at the Gold Coast event against sides from across the country. Their pork entry topped the field, they tied third in chicken, sixth in lamb and fifteenth in beef.

FarmFest traffic
Although now in its second day, Oakey residents still need to be aware that increased traffic conditions will be continuing at the FarmFest site off the Warrego Highway. Motorists are urged to follow all directions and be vigilant especially when approaching traffic turning right from the highway into Brimblecombe Road.

LOCAL SIDE COMPETES AT CABOOLTURE The ‘Salad Dodgers’ backed up their Gold Coast successes by taking part in the Caboolture BBQ & Beer Festival at the weekend. The team outperformed their previous efforts being named Reserve Grand Champion as well as winning two first places in steak and bakehouse, a second in pork ribs and third place in chicken. These consistent results mean the ‘Salad Dodgers’ now sit in the top five in the Australasian Barbecue Alliance 2020/21 Championship Series leaderboard.

No upgrades in pipeline for Hospital
Queensland Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to undertake major upgrade works to the Oakey Hospital. Mrs D’Ath updated the Queensland Parliament on plans for the Oakey Hospital after receiving a question from Member for Condamine Pat Weir. She said maintenance works with continue at the local facility.
“I am advised by the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service that there is no immediate plans for upgrades at their facility at the Oakey Hospital, however regularly maintenance works occur which involve

Kelvinhaugh State School
Kelvinhaugh State School was formerly located on the northern side of WithornKelvinhaugh Road as it intersects with OakeyKelvinhaugh Road. The school was first known as Mayburn Provisional School when it opened on January 20, 1905
and a few years later on January 1, 1909 it became Mayburn State School. It was then located at Silverleigh-Kingsthorpe Road south of Oakey Creek. In 1926 the school was moved to WithornKelvinhaugh Road and was renamed Kelvinhaugh State
School. This move was reportedly made by loading the structure on a wagon and carting it between locations. This name matched the name of the Kelvinhaugh Cheese Factory, opened in 1919, which was taken from the named of a property then owned by the Woods family. The school’s first teacher was Elizabeth Barron. Most of the school’s students were children of factory workers or farmers. The school was closed on October 31, 1952. The building was purchased by Les Morwood and shifted to the Goondiwindi district. Although only operating for just over 25 years, the school had a big impact on the local children and their families.

OUR ECONOMY IS ON TRACK TO COME BACK Australia’s economy is on track to come back. In fact, our economy outperformed all major advanced economies in 2020. In the second half of 2020, it grew at the fastest pace on record and there are now more people in work than before the pandemic.
CONTINUING OUR COMEBACK To build upon the progress we’ve made, the next steps in the plan provide more support for individuals, families and businesses to help secure the economy and create more jobs.
JOB CREATION IS ON TRACK Over the next 10 years, many more local jobs will be created and secured through investment in roads, rail and community infrastructure. More homes will be built in more communities thanks to HomeBuilder and the New Home Guarantee. More training will be available through JobTrainer. And there’ll be new apprenticeships, traineeships and more places in higher education. And there’ll be more opportunities for families to access work with more affordable childcare.

And our $1.2 billion investment in digital infrastructure, skills, and incentives means that more businesses in communities right across Australia can be part of the thriving digital economy.
LOWER TAXES & GREATER SUPPORT FOR MORE AUSTRALIANS
We’re supporting hard hit industries such as aviation, tourism and international education.
Tax cuts for 10 million low and middle income earners will put more money in their pockets to spend at local businesses, creating more economic activity and more jobs.

COMBINED CHURCHES SERVICE I recently had the absolute privilege of attending a combined churches service in Oakey. It was wonderful to see how everyone worked together and made for a very special morning. Two local school chaplains were in attendance and shared something of their work. The local communities are indeed blessed to have these positive influences in schools. It seemed to fit in so well with a reminder from our bishop about the words of Bishop Michael Curry at a certain royal wedding three years ago: ‘Think and imagine a world where love is the way. Imagine our homes and families where love is the way. Imagine governments and nations where love is the way. Imagine business and commerce where this love is the way. Imagine this tired old world where love is the way.’ Remember that what we feed grows and what we neglect dies. What are we feeding in our everyday lives? - June Evans Anglican Church member
Letters To the Editor COMMENTS ON MOUSE PLAGUE Dear Editor, The comments by local MP Pat Weir (“Local member labels PETA’s mice plague advice bizarre”, 26 May) reminds me of the words of Robert Burns, “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley”. Burns meant that things can go wrong, even when well planned. It’s unfortunately the case that the conditions causing these millions of tiny animals to search desperately for food at the expense of our hard-
working grain growers are aggravated by a chronic lack of planning from governments. Severe mouse infestations happen about every ten years, and date back to the early 1800s, a few years after European ships arrived carrying convicts and other, smaller passengers. While science has leaped ahead in most areas, little has been done to avoid these very predictable events. Is it really too much to expect for the government to invest in humane and effective methods of prevention, rather than
handing out poisons that will endanger us all, including farmers’ families? Instead of making divisive comments pitting city against country or misquoting PETA’s recommendations that householders catch and release the occasional mouse in the suburban house, misrepresenting our humane approach to a different situation, Mr Weir should concentrate on minimising suffering to all animals, including mice and men. Desmond Bellamy Special Projects Coordinator PETA Australia
Whether a friend or foe, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is inviting community members to have a say on the Region’s canine residents and how they spend time in public places.
TRC Environment and Community Portfolio Leader Tim McMahon said Council was interested in hearing residents’ feedback on the type of public places dogs should or should not be able to access. “Council is responsible for the management of a variety of public spaces for recreational and environmental purposes,” Cr McMahon said. We understand people have different levels of interest in and connections to dogs “For many, dogs are a part of the family and join their owners in a range of recreational activities. “While some may not own a dog of their own, but enjoy being around them in shared open spaces, such as parks and off-leash areas. “Others might prefer to spend time in places that are dog free and value the provision of dedicated areas for the protection of wildlife. “As our Region’s population continues to grow so does the number of dogs living here and the ways in which they are involved in many people’s
daily lives. “We’d love all community members to share their thoughts and ideas on dogs and how they interact with our shared spaces, whether you’re a dog owner or not. “Community feedback will be used to help achieve Council’s goal of creating
a positive relationship between people, dogs and outdoor places. “Residents can have their say through Council’s Your Say website until 30 June 2021.” For more information visit yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au, call Council on 131 872 or email info@tr.qld.gov.au

Queensland residents lose millions to scammers in 2020
Queenslanders lost more than $32 million to scammers in 2020, according to the latest Targeting Scams Report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman wants Queenslanders to protect themselves from scammers who do not discriminate in who they target, or how they operate. “Scamming is big business and our best defence against these con artists is to understand their modus operandi and be alert to spotting new scam trends,” she said. “In 2020, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) noted an increase in reports of scams
during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly fake online stores, phone calls by scammers pretending to be from trusted organisations or government agencies, scams via email and text, and itinerant trader scams.” Scammers are always finding new ways to take people’s money, with losses by Queenslanders up from $27.3 million in 2019 to $32.1 million in 2020. “While the report revealed that Queenslanders reported more than 39,000 scams to Scamwatch,

research shows that 33 percent of people who lose money to a scam will not report it – so figures in this report underestimate the extent of the loss,” Ms Fentiman said. The national top three scams in 2020 (by the amount lost) were investment, dating and romance and false billing scams. For every scam reported by Queenslanders that involved a financial loss, the average loss was almost $8,330, which makes Queensland the state with the highest average loss. Scam numbers continue to rise and scammers are always refining their tactics and techniques to get consumers to fall for their ploys. “If something seems not right with a phone call, an email, text or a pop-up, the take time to consider who you dealing with,” Ms Fentiman said. “Delete, do not respond or click any links. Proud Blonde D’Aquitaine cattle producers Belinda and Wayne Hess of Maclagan exhibited the best the breed can offer at the Beef Australia 2021 event last month taking home several sashes and promoting their cattle to a wider audience.
ABOVE: It was a family affair at Beef 2021 with Belinda, William, Wayne and Angus Hess exhibiting their stud’s cattle, Waite a Wyle Rose Blossom and Waite A Wyle Romantic. Belinda Hess said the stud took eight head and returned with five after selling their young heifers at the event. Overall the Hess’ stud Waite A Wyle Blondes won Champion and Reserve Junior Champion Female, Calf Champion Female and Reserve Champion Calf Champion Female and Reserve Junior Champion Bull as well as firsts in Breeders Group, Dams Progeny and Sires Progeny. Cattle purchased from the local producers by the Mellors family of Chinchilla also had success taking out the Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Bull. Mrs Hess said their stud and the other Blonde D’Aquitaine producers demonstrated the long term benefits of the breed. She said judge John Mercer spoke highly of the exhibits in their section. “Mr Mercer commented on the structural correctness of all cattle, the maternal strength of the females and the market suitability of all cattle across the diverse climate of the Australian

to secure great genetics that we have had and are not stopping here,” she said. “We, for the first time in 2020, did a small embryo program and are now planning to flush embryos from what we feel are some of our best females and have sourced semen from bulls. “We feel we can meet the market going forward.”

THE OAKEY CHAMPION
Big roll-up for Polocrosse event
Toowoomba Polocrosse had a fantastic weekend at the Oakey Showgrounds, hosting its annual polocrosse carnival with teams travelling as far as Roma and Wandoan to complete in the event. Club president, Jo Lossberg, said all up 42 teams entered into the event. “With 6 players per team, and a lot of extra horses, the Showgrounds were packed to capacity,” she said. “With perfect weather and great fields for polocrosse (that are maintained by our local player, Gary Lang), all players were very happy with how the weekend went.” The A grade final was won by Tansey, with the top Gold Coast team making them work for their hardearned win. Ms Lossberg said, alongside hosting the carnival, the club is preparing to build a storage shed at the local Showgrounds thanks to a grant from the
Queensland Government’s Community Benefit Fund. “This shed will be of benefit to both the Show society and polocrosse to store equipment needed for both organisations,” she said. “We have also received a grant from the Toowoomba Regional Council that will aid with the maintenance of the grounds.” If any one is interested in this fantastic familyoriented sport, contact Queensland Polocrosse Association via https:// polocrosse.com.au for more details on how to get involved.
