yet seen in the town and parking was at a premium with side streets filled with vehicles. The theme for this year’s event was centred around two icons - the historic Pioneer Arms Hotel and the QCWA.

The Pioneer Arms is celebrating 125 years this year and there were plenty of customers to help mark the occasion on Saturday. While the Goombungee branch of QCWA was formed only in 1962, the local members maintain

their strong presence in the district and uphold the 100-year-old traditions of the organisation. Naturally, there were scones and pikelets along with a special song performed by Megan O’Brien.

Goombungee residents Nicole Clenton and her daughter Jordyn met up with some friends who travelled from Oakey - Mandy Burow and children Lucas, Cohen and Makayla.

SES latest beneficiary of fundraising Remembrance Day

Thanks to those who participated in a monthly raffle held at the Bernborough Tavern in October, Oakey SES group has received a cheque worth $680.

John Webster has been organising the raffles for about 18 months and chooses a different local community

group or organisation for which to raise funds. The November raffle was held last weekend and

raised money for St Monica’s Primary School. Oakey SES group leader Trevor Flynn said the group

is thankful for the donation. He said all are welcome to attend training sessions every Monday from 5 to 7pm.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. For more than a century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts. At Oakey the day has special significance as the district has been host to members of the nation’s defence force for almost 80 years - first in early 1943 when the air field was constructed to provide a home for the RAAF’s No. 6 Aircraft Depot, to alleviate the high workload of No. 3 Aircraft Depot at Amberley.

Conrad Vohland’s memorial card

This expensive version of a memorial card which was printed at 142 King Street, Sydney by Memorial Card Engraving Co., was in memory of my greatgreat-grandfather, Conrad Vohland who passed away at Oakey on December 5, 1905 in the presence of his large family. He was born in Frankenau, in the province of Hesse, Germany on November 11, 1827 (195 years ago). At the age of 35 years, he sailed with his wife, Magdalene (nee Ludde) and five eldest children, on board the “Beausite” for Queensland, where they arrived in Moreton Bay on September 5, 1863. They resided at Highfields and Middle Ridge for

some years and when Westbrook Station was thrown open for selection in 1877, Conrad took up land at Crosshill, where he engaged in farming and a butchering business (at Dead Gully) for 22 years. During the past several years since 1900, he resided at Oakey with his third wife. The funeral of the deceased took place at the Lutheran Cemetery, Aubigny, the officiating clergyman being Pastor T. F. Langebecker. The late Conrad Vohland was married three times, his first two wives dying in childbirth. He attained the age of 78 years and was survived by his third wife, six sons and eight daughters (two

of them being my great grandmothers). He had 78 grandchildren

Excellence in Leadership Award for St. Monica’s educator

A dedicated team member from St. Monica’s School at Oakey is among outstanding educators and staff from Toowoomba Catholic Schools who were celebrated at their annual Excellence Awards, held last Wednesday.

One of the award recipients on the evening was Rebecca McGregor who is Middle Leader and Assistant Principal: Religious Education at St Monica’s. Ms McGregor said she was delighted to receive the Excellence in Leadership Middle Leadership Award. She started in the city office of Toowoomba Catholic Schools in 2018 as Education Officer: Literacy, which saw her cover schools across the Diocese. By 2021 Ms McGregor was missing being in the school environment, so when a position came up at St. Monica’s she applied and was successful. She had an immediate impact on teaching

and learning when she commenced her work at the school. With faith and exceptional pedagogy as her foundation, Ms McGregor promoted collective responsibility and accountability for student achievement and wellbeing. Her willing dedication to leading professional development, collaborative planning and teaching, and genuine interest in each individual soon became a model for others. She now spends two days a week in Middle Leadership, two days on Religious Education and one day teaching Art, which she loves, as it keeps her in touch with classroom activity.

Middle Leadership Award winner Rebecca McGregor. The award citation said Ms McGregor’s selfless actions and genuine care and concern for the

academic, spiritual and psychological growth of all staff and students make her a leader people

Kulpi students enjoyed talking about safety on farms and took a lot of care drawing and colouring

their entries. This week, Kelly Ostwald, Regional Director of AgForce, visited the school to present participating students with Certificates of Thanks. With a tick treatment shortage nation wide, it is vital that your pets be on a paralysis tick preventative. Without prevention if your pet gets a tick and no tick anti-serum is available, it will be even harder for your vet to treat your fury friend and they potentially will not be able to save them. On the 30th October I had the absolute privilege of attending Grace Church for an Ecumenical Service. This combined worship has been happening in Oakey for a while on the 5th Sunday of the month when one occurs. A group of wonderful young people from Rockhampton accepted an invitation from that church to lead worship and ‘bless Oakey’. In this time of so much economic disadvantage it was indeed inspiring to see these people come and provide such service. It’s not that I don’t appreciate our own church but I would just like to acknowledge the uplifting and welcoming situation we were a part of, too. These events cannot

happen without much time and planning and on behalf of all who attended I would like to say it was a truly wonderful and blessed morning. It really did recharge the batteries for the week ahead. I do have to admit that I had been going around in circles with a few issues recently but the message came loud and clear that I need to get back to prayer and Bible reading to move on. The message also came in a few ways over the last week that we all need to appreciate the wonderful blessings that we do have before facing the problems in front of us. “With thankful hearts offer up your prayers”: Philippians 4:6 - June Evans Anglican Church

At Oakey this year, she was coached by her father, Eddie Dean. Oakey finished fifth of nine teams. Mireka formerly played for Toowoomba Valleys and Western Mustangs. Australia and the Cook

Islands are competing in Group B alongside New Zealand and France. After the final group matches to be played Friday morning (Australian time) the top two sides will advance to the semi-finals, then the final.
