Inspirational local mum smashes ParkRun goal

Printer celebrates 30th anniversary

The Greenridge Group, printer of The Oakey Champion, last week celebrated 30 years since its founding.

Last Saturday, Gina Lawrie crossed the Oakey ParkRun finish line - something she’s had her eye on doing since being diagnosed with rare disorder Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). Gina was diagnosed in December 2020 with CIDP, where she lost the feeling and function of her legs, and sensation and strength in her upper limbs. She has been hard at work rehabilitating and re-learning to walk since then. Both Gina and her husband Justin used to participate in ParkRun regularly and did a few overseas as well. Since her diagnosis, Gina’s goal has been to again participate in weekly ParkRun events, hence the name of her popular Facebook Page, ‘Walk with me and CIDP’. Gina has been volunteering at ParkRun for most of this year and has been walking the track on weekends and afternoons to get in some practice and be able to reach her goal of completing it in under an hour. This was the first time in two years that Gina has been able to complete a ParkRun and she smashed her goal of one hour with a time of 55 minutes. Over the course of

Gina’s treatment, she has received an initial weekly dose of plasma, as well as a full plasma exchange when in Brisbane. Her current treatment (which has now been since March 2021) involves receiving a plasma infusion every four weeks to assist with ‘washing out the nasties’ that are causing her immune system to attack her nerves. Gina has received the best hospital and rehabilitation treatment along the way and now it’s time to pay it forward. So Gina and her friends and family are encouraging people to donate blood and plasma at the Australian Red Cross Blood Donation Centre in Toowoomba later this month on Sunday August 28th. They are asking everyone to come along for a chat, donate either whole blood or plasma, have a cuppa and in turn, help out someone in need. For more information on how you can donate blood, visit Gina’s Facebook Page ‘Walk with me and CIDP’ or visit https://www.lifeblood.

Based in Toowoomba at a large premises in Wilsonton, Greenridge has expanded immensely over the past three decades from its humble beginnings of five staff in 1992 to almost 50 in 2022. Mark Osborne founded the business with the help of his wife Fran and has since passed the reins over to son Kyal, the Managing Director. Younger son Luke is also involved with the family business. Mr Osborne said it had taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get to where they are today. “To be honest, I never even imagined I’d still be in this business at all!” Mr Osborne said. “I’d just gone into business on my own for the first time, we had five staff members, and I was working around 60 hours per week. “But I’ve really actually enjoyed it.” A large part of Greenridge’s expansion has been through acquiring other businesses, including its largest competitor in Toowoomba, Cranbrook Press, in 2004 and Warwick’s Creed and Lang. Kyal Osborne said the

focus over the last decade has been expanding the business, which now includes six separate brands. From a small offset press, where anything requiring colour had a six-week turnaround, they now have an annual turnover of over $10 million. Greenridge has been printing The Oakey Champion and it’s four sister publications since April 2019. Their printing expertise has been acknowledged on a national level, recently winning multiple awards at the 39th National Print Awards in Melbourne. Greenridge won the gold, silver and bronze for the Regional Printer of the Year - over 12 employees for print perfection and were recognised as the Best Regional Printing Company in Australia. “It was very special winning these awards right before our 30th birthday,” Kyal Osborne said. “This is a real family business we have here, and I think the community has supported us over the years because of our high quality, strength of services, and diversity into new products.”

Raffle funds go to Oakey Oakey Electrical float for Carnival of Flowers top business

Proceeds from the Community Chest Raffle, sponsored by the Bernborough Tavern, have this month gone towards building the Oakey float which will feature in the Carnival of Flowers parade this September. Raffle Coordinator John Webster said the local community had raised $470 to go towards building the Oakey float. Float organiser Zoe Grainger said the money will go towards purchasing the final decorations as well as the materials needed to make a miniature replica of the town. “The plants that will be on the float have all grown and we’ve been deadheading the flowers to ensure they bloom just at the right time for the parade,” she said. “We also have most of the decorations too, it’s just a matter of finding enough people and time to put it all together. “The next big task I’m currently focussing on is building a mini scale town of Oakey out of corflute. “I’ve been speaking with a lot of businesses about incorporating them into the mini town replica because I want this year’s float to be a reflection of the Oakey community and all the businesses and individuals that make up the town. “The pharmacy, Tavern, IGA and Foodworks have all expressed interest which is great! “We’ve already had some groups donate money to us, including CWA Oakey who gave us $250 and Nathan from the Pharmacy who gave us $100. “I am so grateful to those

Awards founder Steve Loe said he was excited to reveal the expansion of the program to 100 categories this year, giving more small businesses the opportunity to be recognised. He said since the Awards’ inception in 1999, it’s only become bigger. “I have been immensely proud to watch and be part of the continued growth of the awards program as it has evolved into the nation’s most respected initiative to recognise small business achievements,” he said.

“If you are an owner and manager of an Australian small business, you deserve to be acknowledged and recognised. “I encourage you to be part of this exciting awards program and celebrate your achievements and success. “I hope to meet you at our next Australian Small Business Champion Awards gala event.” This year’s National Presentation Evening will be held over two nights at The Star in Sydney over 2nd and 3rd September.

(Left to right) Community Chest Raffle Coordinator John Webster, Oakey Float Organiser Zoe Grainger and Bernborough Tavern owner Michael Carpenter. who have supported us already. “We initially had challenges finding somewhere to store the float, but David Coops has kindly offered to temporarily store it for us.” Ms Grainger said she eventually wants the Oakey float to become a community-driven campaign where everyone is involved. “I’m talking to the local schools as well to see if we can get the students to help

decorate it,” she said. Ms Grainger said this is a fantastic tourism opportunity for the town as people travel from Brisbane and all along the coast to attend the Carnival of Flowers. “Toowoomba gets a lot of money from the festival and it goes for four weeks and we miss out on that. “We are the only regional town who enters a float in the parade, so we can pave the way for other towns like Pittsworth and Crows

Nest to enter. “Hopefully, one day we can have gardens as part of the show as well. “Then we will see an overflow into Oakey and people will come and stay in the motels and support the local businesses. “This can be our niche, just like how Chinchilla has melons to promote their town.” To donate or help build and decorate the float, contact Zoe Grainger on 0434 408 291.

Darling Downs volunteer receives excellence award

Maurice (Pat) Forrest, who has been dedicated to volunteering with the Rural Fire Service (RFS), has been named the South Western Region’s RFS Volunteer of the Year. Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP said Pat has volunteered throughout the region for many years. “Pat has shown true dedication to the Felton Broxburn brigade by acquiring land and contributing to the station build project, which was officially opened in October 2021,” he said. “Pat showed operational excellence during the Peachey and Crow’s

Nest fires in 2019, which devastated the Darling Downs area. “He has also delivered a training program to brigades within the Pittsworth area, enhancing the relationship with local The brigades and increasing the operational readiness and capability of the area. “During his time with the RFS, he has demonstrated outstanding compassion, support, commitment and diligence to his brigade,

and I thank him for that. “It is thanks to volunteers like Pat we are able to support our community during tough times, whether that be bushfires, floods or storms.” Queensland Fire and Tavern Emergency Services Acting Assistant Commissioner South Western Region Mark Stuart said alongside Pat, a group of 14 volunteers, one posthumous award, two retired volunteers and one retired staff member would

also receive prestigious awards to acknowledge their service with the RFS. “Eight volunteers will receive the National Medal for 15 years of service (including one posthumous award), with three volunteers to receive the 1st Clasp to their National Medal for 25 years of service and three volunteers to receive the 2nd Clasp to their National Medal for 35 years of service,” he said.

TO THE PAST “Euston” Part IV: New owners Following the early demise of William Kent at “Euston” in February 1874, Martha and family remained at the homestead while the paddocks were rented out.

On June 1, 1876, the eldest daughter Mary Elizabeth was married at “Euston” to James Henry McConnel of “Cressbrook”. September 6 and 7, 1876, saw the largest sale ever to take place in the Darling Downs district, when James W. Grimes sold Mrs. Kent’s large and splendid assortment of modern household furniture and effects as well as horses, cows and sheep, wagonette and buggies. After this sale, the homestead remained vacant for nearly two years until Henry Drew Caswell from a property near Maryborough purchased “Euston” in March 1878 for £36,500.

The Caswell family, which consisted of Henry, his wife Jane and eight children - six daughters and two sons aged from 18 to 4 years, took up occupancy in the homestead in July 1878. Sadly, Jane Caswell passed away at “Euston” on November 12, 1880 and a few years later, eldest daughter Lillian, aged 23, passed away at home from heart disease on August 28, 1883. Another tragedy struck the family in May 1887 when Henry and one daughter were thrown from their dogcart when it capsized. The daughter was uninjured but Henry, aged 55, never rallied from

the accident and passed away on May 31, also at “Euston”. This left the family as orphans. The third daughter, Enid, passed away on October 30, 1907. Both sons had moved on to other properties but the other four daughters all remained spinsters and lived at “Euston” up until the 1950s. Shortly after the death of the last sister in 1953, one of the grandsons Reid Caswell, his wife and young son occupied “Euston” for a short time until they relocated to another property at Gin Gin. The homestead fell

Show off your horse at the Oakey Show!

At this year’s Oakey Show on 27th August, horse owners of all experience levels are encouraged to have some fun and enter their horses into one of the 13 categories for a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Stall organiser Jess Henry said there’s a class category for horses and riders of all levels. “You can register before or on the day for just one dollar,” she said. “We have some fantastic prizes up for grabs thanks to our sponsors Wandilla Equine Services, Bronc

Stomper Western Wear, Halter Heaven, the Oakey Agricultural Pastoral and Rodeo Society and of course Project Cowgirl who is sponsoring the entire horse stall. “This is a great opportunity to get you and your horse some exposure. “It’s a community event,

Project Cowgirl’s Jess Henry riding her horse Wimpys Lil Player aka ‘Oats’ at a competition.

so we want all horse riders in the community to be involved and that’s why we organised this stall in the first place. “We noticed that this year’s show was missing a horse event, so that’s when Project Cowgirl stepped in and decided to put something together so locals can have a bit of fun with their horses.” On the day registrations will cost $1 per rider. Horse health declarations must be submitted on the day and organisers ask that you present to steward on arrival. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet. If you want more information or to register your interest, call Jess Henry on 0414 411 678.

Busy Times for St Ruth Hall: CSG information session

St Ruth Hall rang to the sounds of music and laughter as dancers took to the floor on Saturday, 30th July, for the second time this year - the Christmas in July celebrations were the perfect opportunity to shrug off winter chills and farming blues to enjoy light hearted fun. The following Wednesday, the hall opened again when a Community Information and Support Session was held for farmers and neighbours on coal seam gas (CSG) activities between Dalby and Cecil Plains. Shay Dougall, consultant and landholder advocate, was the main speaker. The non-profit grower initiated meeting began with an overview of CSG regulatory framework. Farmers from other district groups offered their support. Bev Newton of Kupunn stressed the importance of ensuring CSG companies “baseline measurements” of subsidence are accurate. Gayle J. Pedler, a farmer from the eastern side of the Condamine River, said discussions and questions flowed on other subjects

including Area Wide Planning, Deviated Wells, and Land Access rules. “Those who attended were concerned that Deviated Wells are planned to come under the Condamine River,” she said. “CSG activities have not previously impacted cropping lands east of the Condamine River. “Being a priority agricultural area, Regional Interests Development Approvals under the Regional Planning Interests Act are required. “Exemptions include CSG companies having farmers sign agreements. “A member of the Springvale farmers group noted that he and others will have a RIDA application lodged over their farms. “He commented that

the details he has received since being informed of the RIDA is very different to the information he received in previous months of inquiries.” Ms Pedler emphasised that, whilst farmers’ business plans and compensation deals were a

private matter, CSG is not an agricultural activity and communities should be better informed. “With Gas companies operating from a position of regulatory and financial power with the most to gain financially, they should have a duty of care

100 years of QCWA at Kingsthorpe Last Wednesday, the Kingsthorpe Branch hosted a celebration to mark 100 years of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) serving the community.

A brunch took place at the Kingsthorpe War Memorial Hall, which is next to the Branch’s rest rooms, and saw past and present members of the Darling Downs Division attend. This also included past members from nine former branches - Acland, Biddeston, Cooyar, Haden, Jondaryan, Maclagan, Meringandan, Norwin and Upper Lockyer-Withcott. Guests travelled from as far as Brisbane, Jandowae, Norwin and Warwick to celebrate the momentous occasion. Darling Downs Division President Elaine Kieseker has been working on the QCWA executive for over a decade and has juggled the positions of State Vice President and now Division President. “Not many organisations make it to 100 years,” she said. “So it’s important we celebrate this achievement. “What I love most about my job as Division President is going and meeting up with the community every day. “Especially meeting up with the young mums and seeing the future generations who will help keep this organisation growing.”

Tomorrow (11th August 2022) will mark exactly 100 years since QCWA’s long history in Toowoomba began. It was the Cambooya Branch where Mrs Ruth Fairfax, the first president, was elected in August 1922. The organisation formed to improve the

welfare of women and children in the country and has been monumental in establishing education facilities, student hostels, waiting mothers hostels, maternity and child welfare services and medical and hospital facilities, to name a few. Although widely

known for their tea and scones, QCWA members have always been ready to assist in other areas, such as wartime assistance and disaster relief. The Kingsthorpe Branch has nineteen members, with the oldest member at 100 years of age and the youngest at just 10 years

old. The Branch’s longest serving member, Marie Ehrlich, has been with the branch for 73 years and has four generations of family also registered as members. State President Sheila Campbell said that whilst many things have changed

over the years, the most important things like fellowship and sense of community have remained the same. “We are very proud of the Association and all its achievements over the past century and today has been a lovely day of celebrating memories,” she said.

Residents may have noticed a heightened number of police patrolling the area over the past month as part of ‘Operation Zero’ - a campaign targeting road trauma. Operation Zero saw hundreds of police out on the roads throughout the Southern Region in July in an attempt to prevent road trauma. Over the past decade, the month of July has been the worst month for lives lost in Southern Region.       Acting Inspector David Campbell, Operations Southern Region, said despite the best efforts of police throughout the

region, seven lives were lost this July - two fewer than the same time last year. Within the Darling Downs District, operations were conducted in Toowoomba, the Lockyer Valley, South Burnett and border region, resulting in 10,142 roadside breath tests (RBT) or roadside drug tests (RDT) and 890 Traffic Infringement Notices being issued.

New platform makes Stripe rust using drones easier ‘epidemic’

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) has released a new drone processing platform which will make mapping fields and analysing crop data easier for farmers. Developed in partnership with Land Solution Australia, the recently launched platform UAS ortho-Cloud is set to transform how farmers manage their fields. Dr Gharineiat, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland,

said the platform puts the power back into the hands of farmers, saving them time, money and resources. “Most drone mapping services currently in the market are expensive, complex and difficult to use if you don’t have the proper

training or experience,” she said. “Our platform was developed specifically for users with little or no knowledge about processing aerial drone imagery. “A farmer simply just has to upload their aerial

images into the cloudbased service, and it will automatically create precise maps of their crops.” The project was supported by an Australian Government Innovations Connections grant from the Entrepreneurs’ Programme.

Upcoming eastAUSmilk AGM

Co-CEO of eastAUSmilk Shaughn Morgan welcomes a ‘new era’ for Queensland and New South Wales dairy farmers ahead of their upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) set to be held at the Lismore Turf Club at the end of the month. eastAUSmilk was formed less than a year ago on 1st December 2021, when the former Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation and NSWbased Dairy Connect came together to form a single dairy farmer organisation representing both states under the united badge of eastAUSmilk. Mr Morgan said each organisation took leadership roles across a broad spectrum of policy issues, ranging from the introduction of the Dairy Mandatory Code of Conduct through to the demise of $1/L milk. “Yet like most Industry bodies, it was proving difficult to arrest the decline of dairy farms with the resulting decrease in milk production,” he said. “This has become even

more evident over the past decade and has been an ongoing trend since deregulation of the dairy industry in 2000. “By joining together, our two bodies could represent a greater number of dairy farmers before government and stakeholders, as well as providing an enhanced service to our dairy members. “Under the chairmanship of Matt Trace and ably supported by his Board, each representing one of the six District Councils, eastAUSmilk has proudly continued the strong traditions of its august past but always looking to the future.” The Board recently farewelled Gary Wenzel and he was thanked for his support of eastAUSmilk. As with farming

succession, the Board said it was pleased to welcome sixth generation Kerry Valley dairy farmer Kay Tommerup to the Board. Her family’s dairy farm can proudly trace its history to 1874. With an eye on the future of eastAUSmilk and dairying in Queensland and NSW, the 2022 AGM will be held on 30th August

at the Lismore Turf Club. The Board and members are looking forward to visiting the Northern Rivers. Formal notification and further information will be sent to members shortly. To become a member of the industry association, visit the eastausmilk website at https://www. eastausmilk.org.au/

Experts are warning that this growing season stripe rust is on the rise after the significant green bridge over summer has resulted in earlier inoculum development. NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSWDPI) Senior Plant Pathologist, Steven Simpfendorfer provided an update on cereal diseases for the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). “We’re seeing an early epidemic this season growers wouldn’t usually be reporting infections this early on,” he said. “This has meant there’s significantly more seedling infections this year, including in RMR (resistant/moderately resistant) varieties, but growers who selected more resistant varieties to help manage the disease shouldn’t be too alarmed. “Growers should be proactive and consider applying an early fungicide to manage seedling infections in later sown wheat crops as all varieties are susceptible at this stage.”

He said growers should be assessing crops closely and making informed fungicide decisions while crops are most vulnerable at early growth stages. It is estimated that over five million tonnes of wheat are lost each year to stripe rust alone and GRDC has invested significantly in helping Australian growers identify the disease and manage it to prevent yield loss.

Birthday celebrations for the School of Army Aviation

As Swartz Barrack’s School of Army Aviation turns fifty years old, let’s take a look back on the history of the School.

The School of Army Aviation (SAA) was formed on the 1st August 1972 at Amberley fifty years ago and was previously known as the Training Squadron of the 1st Aviation Regiment before being renamed what it is today. Just one year after opening, the SAA relocated from Amberley to a new permanent facility at Oakey in 1973. The School originally trained pilots, aircrew and groundcrew on Bell Sioux, Kiowa, Porter and Cessna 180 aircraft. Now, trainees use CH47F Chinook Cargo

Helicopters, Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH) and MRH90 Taipan Troop Lift Helicopters as part of their learning. Currently, the School of Army Aviation forms the third and final component of a Joint Pilot Training system, comprising the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) 1st Flying Training School at RAAF Base Sale in Victoria, the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) 723 Squadron Helicopter Aircrew Training System and the United States Army Flight School 21 at Fort Rucker in

Lieutenant Colonel Scott Dore Commanding Officer of SAA gives a speech to the crowd at the Australian Army Flying Museum attending the 50th-anniversary cocktail party. - Photo, Bradley Richardson

the United States. Aircraft and personnel from the School have also supported communities in Central, Western and South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales with assistance during both floods and bushfire events. The School trains both initial employment and transitioning personnel in Pilot, Aircrewman, Ground Crew Mission Support and Ground Crew Aircraft Support trades. In doing so the School of Army Aviation delivers Combat Aviators who can be quickly deployed on operations in Australia and overseas. The staff of the School of Army Aviation recently celebrated the Unit’s 50th Anniversary with a cocktail function held at the Museum of Army Flying at Oakey. The current

Commanding Officer of the School, Lieutenant Colonel Scott Dore, pinpoints the current blended workforce comprised of the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, Australian Public Service and contracted personnel as the key to the School’s success and wishes to continue on this path for the next fifty years. “Fifty years is a significant milestone and there were people here celebrating on Friday night who were instructors at this school fifty years ago,” he said. “Since then, we have continued to evolve and change the way we train. “We could not do what we do without the experience and mission focus we have from all our staff in this unit. “We fly more hours than any other unit. “Between our three

aircraft types, we fly about 4,000 hours every year. “We train about a dozen trainees every year in what is the most complex training system Army has to date. “I look forward to continuing towards the end of the year and into the future as we continue to work towards our next fifty years of the School of Army Aviation.” Lieutenant Colonel Dore has worked in Defence since 1995 and has been posted at the Oakey Base four times since 1996. He has held his most recent position of Commanding Officer of the school for twenty months. “It’s very exciting what we do here and as we continue to look forward into the future, I’m excited about how we will train as we talk about the new virtual and mixed reality

technology. Lieutenant Colonel Dore said in the span of 26 years he has witnessed rapid technological transformation, especially regarding the simulated training activities. “Now about 50 per cent of all training in the school is simulated,” he said. “Now it’s a more synthetic and virtual training environment. “It makes it safer for our trainees and we don’t have to worry about the weather impacting exercises. “Also, the simulations allow us to do things and create situations that we can’t do in real life.” It is a tradition that the Commanding Officer and the youngest trainee (in this case, Trooper Sally Campbell) cut the cake together with the symbolic Sword that represents the Australian Army Aviation.

While the teaching methods and technology have changed over the years, students have continued to carry the school’s motto “Strive for the Best” with them throughout their lives. Gail Hannam (nee Grundy) was the first generation of the Grundy family to attend the school. She was there from 1954 to 1959 and reflects on her earliest memories of her school life: “What always comes to mind are the few weeks at the end of 1953 when I went to school on the bus with the Ward children,” she said. “I had been a Correspondence School student for three years and didn’t know what a Head Master was! “I was scared of Mr Weber when he fired questions at me on my first day.” Her nephew Russell Grundy attended from 1970 to 1975 and one of his earliest memories of school life is the centenary celebrations in 1972. For Russell, the friendships and core values he formed at Jondaryan have continued throughout his life. Reflecting on the newer generations, Russell said he feels the pace and pressure has increased. “I’m impressed how students after me have managed this by taking it all in their stride as they adapt to modern technologies with ease,” he said. Anita Polzin (nee Grundy) was a pupil from 1993 to 2000 and enjoyed her schooling experience so much that she can remember “waiting for school holidays to end so I could return to the classroom”. It is perhaps one of the reasons why Anita became a teacher and she has

Anita said she was horrified yet impressed by how the teachers taught a class of 40-plus students in the poor conditions in early 1900s. “Another change has been the introduction of technology and how reliant we are on using technology, and interactive whiteboards in our teaching,” she said. Anita’s son, Miles Polzin, is the fourth-generation of the family to attend Jondaryan, commencing school in 2021. Miles likes the school’s

An added bonus that has helped him settle in has been having his Oma, Cora Grundy, working at the school. “It is very special to know that my Pa and Mum have attended this school and now I can celebrate this with my family and class friends,” he said. The family reflected on the highs and lows of their schooling years in the lead up to the 150th celebrations and feel the school’s motto is a “good mantra for life”. “It’s nice to know you were just a small part of an enduring legacy—a
