A Tara woman died at the scene of a head-on crash at Bowenville on Friday. The Forensic Crash Unit continues to investigate the cause of the two fatal crashes, one of which resulted in the deaths of a Gympie woman and her

daughter at Mount Irving on Thursday and another in which a 24-yearsold Tara woman died at Bowenville on Friday. Oakey Police Acting

Officer-in-Charge Sergeant Scott Nicol said both incidents were tragic and are a timely reminder to all motorists to be careful when driving on local roads.

One critical after local crash

Continued from page 1 “It is a reminder to everyone on the roads not just in Oakey but across the region to acknowledge and adhere to the Fatal Five.” Sergeant Nicol said the Fatal Five are: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, driving distracted and fatigue. He said motorists also need to drive to the weather and road conditions. He said the setting sun may have been a factor which contributed to the crash that killed a Tara woman on Friday. TO THE PAST

Local trucking success story

The award winning Oakey based trucking company, Findlays Bulk Services, was established by Neil and Marlene Findlay on 4AK Road, Oakey in 1974. Neil had driven for his father and when he and Marlene married in 1973 they ran a truck, an International Loadstar, in partnership. Over the years, the company grew to 40 trucks and 100 trailers travelling the eastern seaboard of Australia from Adelaide to Atherton covering 4,000 kilometres of country. Oakey was always the headquarters. The company’s biggest single task was transporting dry freight, including grain, seed, protein meal, fertiliser

and coal. They did the only imported grain movement in Australia when they won the contract with the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service to move the controversially imported protein meal out of Melbourne, Newcastle and Brisbane. They were so proud when they won the National quarantine award for that task. At its peak, Findlays employed 60 people, 52 full time. The business was reduced to a third of its size before it was sold to brothers Stephen and Michael Broadbent of Beaufort, Victoria in 2007, who kept the company name. The Findlays final ties with Oakey were severed when their Aubigny

Mr Pitt said the Federal Government is doing everything it can to push its state counterpart to make a decision. “We are doing everything we can,” he said. “They need to make a decision. “We can’t continue to have a situation where it’s the court that decides what happens in Australia, Queensland and Oakey. That’s the job of government. “What we have seen at New Acland in my view is an absolute disgrace. “There are billions of dollars worth of equipment currently parked up. “There are hundreds of jobs that have already been lost. “It is a proposal that has been on the table since 2007 for extension and still no result.” Mr Pitt said it is clear to local residents that mining is not a new feature of the Acland locality. “This is a mine that has been here since 1914, originally as an underground,” he said. “It has co-existed with agriculture for all that period.”

OH WHAT A FEELING

Arthritis occurs in animals when the cartilage lining of the joint wears down, resulting in inflammation, swelling and pain. This can happen as a result of many things from disease, conformation or excessive weight gain. Symptoms of arthritis in animals may include: stiffness; reluctance to want to move, exercise, play or jump (particularly in cats); dragging of back legs; and reluctance to groom themselves in cats. Arthritis can not be cured, however vets can slow down the process of degeneration and manage the pain associated with it. Management strategies include: - weight control: excess weight causes additional pressure on already affected joints. Calorie restricted diets and gentle exercise to maintain ideal (low end of normal) body weight are essential for animals with arthritis.

- Pentosan injections: this drug helps to increase production along with a better quality joint fluid and increases blood supply to joint surfaces. Pentosan injections have been proven to slowdown the progression of arthritis and help control the pain associated with the disease. - 4CYTE: is available for dogs, cats and horses in a liquid or granule form and stimulates healthy cartilage production and suppresses chemicals responsible for poor joint function. - prescription joint diets: these diets contain omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to help maintain joint health. Better soil testing could ‘save dollars on-farm’

A leading soil scientist is calling for an urgent rethink of how soil constraints are assessed with concern that an over-reliance on a commonly used soil test is resulting in costly and ineffective soil management strategies on-farm 38 per cent of the time. Nuffield Scholarships open

Applications are now open for the Nuffield Scholarships program that gives Australian farmers and fishers a global perspective to learn, grow and remain competitive.

Nuffield Australia Scholarships let producers see leading and innovative businesses across the globe, to find ideas and forge connections that can improve value chains. Each scholarship is valued at $30,000 and Nuffield Australia will award up to 20 scholarship this year. They are open to farmers, fishers and those in associated industries aged between 28 to 45, and no tertiary education qualifications will be required. Nuffield Australia CEO Jodie Redcliffe said bringing home the new best practices, ideas and resources helps Australian agriculture navigate the turbulent global marketplace and seize opportunities. “Building capacity in agriculture, horticulture and fishing is more important as ever, as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and trade tensions,” she said. “There has never been a better time to research how the world has changed, and how agricultural sectors can adapt to complex food supply chains, trade restrictions and changing consumer

behaviour going forward.” Applications close on Friday 6 August 2021.

Ciesiolka returns Achievement to Broncos side Awards open

Following her success in 2020, former local Shenae Ciesiolka has returned to the Brisbane Broncos squad. She has been recently signed to the 2021 team alongside five other premiership players Chelsea Lenarduzzi, Julia Robinson, Tallisha Harden, Lauren Brown. Broncos NRL Women’s Coach Kelvin Wright told broncos.com.au that Ciesiolka (right) and the other new signings perfectly fit the Broncos team culture. “Chelsea, Julia, Tallisha, Lauren and Shenae bring talent, work ethic and experience but most importantly they buy into our team-first approach in everything we do,” he said. “All five players have key roles in our team – Chelsea and Tallisha provide strength and experience in the pack, Julia and Shenae speed and strike out wide, and Lauren has great versatility and skill in playing a range of positions.” The Broncos aim to continue where they left off after winning the 2020 Premiership over the high calibre Sydney Roosters. The NRL Telstra Women’s Premiership kicks off in August. The foundation sides Broncos, Dragons and Roosters will be joined by new NRLW teams Parramatta, Gold Coast and Newcastle.

that persistence pays off

After spending several years on the floor before taking an opportunity to complete an apprentice role, Oakey Beef Exports employee Hans van der Merwe is proof that hard work and commitment never goes unnoticed, being named a finalist in Darling Downs South West Region Training Awards.

The 28-years-old Oakey resident and now fully qualified electrician is one of three people from across the Darling Downs to be announced a finalist in the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year section. Hans is also joined by employer, Oakey Beef Exports, which is also a finalist in the awards and is contesting the Large Employer of the Year category. Although Hans had worked at Oakey Beef for about six years before taking on the apprenticeship, he said he knew that he was always going to become an electrician. “I chopped and changed my mind when I was in high school. But in the end I went back to wanting to be an electrician,” he said. Hans didn’t have to look far for inspiration with his father working as an electrician and now teaching the skill at TAFE. Hans said this family connection definitely drew him to the field and the wide variety of work on offer to electricians. But with the qualification taking about four years to finish, Hans said he was aware that it would take more than a passing interest to remain committed to the training. He said it was the years working hard on the kill floor that made him motivated to move forward. “I worked my ass off for like six years to try and get this and I was not going to take it for granted,” he said. “Now, I get to do stuff that I really enjoy.” After finishing the apprenticeship in September, Hans is already preparing for his next career step. He is taking on some responsibility with tasks at the plate freezer and is hoping to undertake more training, such as in hazardous areas which will
