Oakey Police Senior Constable Ken Cahill said police were called to the Hospital on Thursday evening following reports of a woman causing a disturbance at the facility. “Police will allege the woman caused a disturbance and became abusive to the Doctor and nursing staff,” Senior Constable Cahill said. “The woman was removed from the hospital where she continued kicking at the hospital doors and behaving in a generally disorderly and threatening manner. “Police will further allege the woman assaulted a 13-years-old girl who was attending the hospital.” Senior Constable Cahill said the woman was “well affected” by alcohol but this was not excuse for her behaviour to hospital staff. He said police arrested the woman and she was taken to Toowoomba Watch House where she was given strict bail conditions. Senior Constable Cahill said the 54-years-old Oakey woman was charged with assault and public nuisance and will appear at the Oakey Magistrate’s Court at a later date. Darling Downs Health confirmed that the incident occurred and said safety of staff is a priority for the organisation. “The matter is now before the courts therefore we can not provide any more information,” the spokesperson said. “The safety and wellbeing of our staff and patients is always our priority.

Two Oakey State High School Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) teams have run in first and second in their first ever competition taking on teams from across Queensland and northern New South Wales in the Bundaberg Pedal Prix. As part of the Prix, the boys and girls teams were required to keep the vehicle moving for eight hours as well as compete against the 48 bikes in competition. At the end of the event the girls team finished first in the restricted category with the boys coming in a close second in their event. HPV coordinator John Joyce said the teams were overjoyed by their results. He said the teams were nervous to start the event but soon got into the swing of the competition. “They did very well in their first race,” he said. “Now we are preparing for the big event in September. It will be a full 24 hours event and we call it the Bathurst of Pedal Prix, so it will be a one for the students.”

Kelvinhaugh Bus Run

A diminishing number of pupils brought about the closure of the Kelvinhaugh State School on November 7, 1952. Of the remaining eight, four were from the one family and they left the district. In the ensuing years, another generation of children on the local farms came of school age therefore

required an education. The older two Jarvis girls (Janice and Lois) had started school at Goombungee - a fair hop from home - in 1956 and 1958. Early in 1960, their father Arthur, was approached by Doug Peters of Oakey to ask could those girls transfer to the Oakey State School if

he started a bus run to the crossroads at the site of the former Kelvinhaugh school. That agreement became a sealed deal and the wheels were set in motion. Consequently, Doug and Enid Peters sold their family ute to buy a VW Kombi van which Enid drove and so began the Kelvinhaugh Bus Run in 1960. This was the humble beginning of Peters Coaches. When our Weise family moved to the farm at Kelvinhaugh in October 1962, we four kids made a total of 20 kids in that little Kombi van - we were virtually like sardines in a tin. But they were good times when we were all young and carefree. At the end of that school year, the Boodua school was closed so Doug purchased

Quinalow State School choir shines in Eisteddfod win The high performing Quinalow State School primary-aged choir proves that size doesn’t matter, winning the Best Small School Choir trophy in the 2021 Dalby Eisteddfod as well as several other first place section prizes. The choir, made up of students between the classes of Prep and Year 6 competed against other schools from across the district in the folk and hymn sections. A smaller group of senior singers also entered a concert item section and performed a lively song from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. Their wins in these sections made them a clear front-runner for the overall trophy. Quinalow State School teacher Ruth Watts said choir is an integral part of the small school. “Since I began the program about 15 years ago singing has become a tradition at the school and in the wider community,” she said. “It’s huge for the students. They perform at school and local events and we have entered the Eisteddfod almost every year.” Mrs Watts said the hard work put in by the current and former students has seen the school win almost every year they have entered the Dalby event. She credits the overall enthusiasm and level of input by the students for the program’s success. “We have about 40 kids in the choir. It’s about 80 per cent of all the students in the primary school,” Mrs Watts said.

ABOVE: The high achieving Quinalow State School choir with teacher Ruth Watts. RIGHT: Senior choir students Gabrielle and Kody hold up the group’s trophy. “Choir is voluntary and the students commit to lunchtime and afternoon practices. “The parents have also been fantastic supporting the program. “The students just love being a part of the choir and they get a lot from it. “They are always soo grateful to be able to perform. I find that at the beginning of every year I have students asking me when choir will begin and excited to start up again.”

Rainbow Staircase project proposed

Oakey resident Ellisa Parker is looking for more community support to transform Oakey’s Queensland Rail Pedestrian crossing into a Rainbow Staircase to signify the community’s commitment to be inclusive and promote diversity. Ms Parker said this proposed art project will bring multiple benefits to the community. “I believe this would be of benefit to Oakey 4401 on many levels,” she said. “It will aesthetically, bring colour to an otherwise grey concrete space that is located in the heart of Oakey CBD.” Ms Parker said a similar

project at Rainbow Beach has attracted hundreds of people to the community including famous actor Chris Hemsworth. “Nationally and globally, these art installations become major tourist attractions,” she said. She said the stairs are also a “symbol of commitment to an inclusive and diverse community”.

Ms Parker said June which is LGBT Pride Month is the perfect time to consider adopting this project idea. “This is a sign of diversity and inclusion,” she said. “Pride month of June is a fantastic opportunity to show solidarity with all members of the community.” She asked Oakey

VR prepares students for life

Getting ready for work and life outside school can be daunting but Virtual Reality is helping the kids of Oakey State High School prepare for the real world. Endeavour Foundation, in partnership with Arrow Energy, has provided a Virtual Reality (VR) learning hub to Oakey State High School. Originally designed for people with learning disabilities, the VR learning programs are proving a hit with students of all abilities. Local sites in Grains, pulses JBS confirms and oilseeds hacker payment biosecurity making inroads program

The owners of the Beef City feedlot, JBS USA have confirmed they paid the equivalent of $11 million ransom in response to the criminal hack against its operations.

Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Environment and Community Committee has approved a list of localities to be the focus of the 2021-2022 Biosecurity Surveillance Program.

It will run from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. Localities in this program will include: Highgrove, Doctor Creek, Mount Darry, Greenwood, Kelvinhaugh, Wainui, Formartin, Wellcamp, Umbiram, Wyreema, Millmerran, Clontarf, Googa Creek and Emu Creek. Approval of the program gives Council officers the option to enter properties to identify the presence or extent of invasive biosecurity matter as well as the right to direct property-owners to take “reasonable steps

within a reasonable time to remove or eradicate the matter”. As part of the program properties within identified priority surveillance localities will be inspected to confirm the presence and extent of invasive biosecurity matter. All properties inspected for this purpose will also be monitored for compliance. Where it is necessary to enter a property in order to complete an inspection every effort will be made to contact the occupier and obtain their permission to enter.

Science to Practice Forum registrations

Registrations are now open for the first Future Drought Fund (FDF) Science to Practice Forum to be held from 29 June to 1 July. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said the forum would bring together for the first-time participants in the eight new Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs. “The Science to Practice Forum will provide an important opportunity for Hub members, including farmers, industry, and communities to connect

and collaborate,” he said. “The Forum is a free event. We want a wide range of voices to be heard at the forum to provide input into what is important to help farmers and communities become more drought resilient.” Find out more at https:// hopin.com/events/futuredrought-fund-s-science-topractice-innovation-forumbuilding-the-foundations-ofdrought-resilience

into Pakistan

Australian canola, chickpea, lentil and wheat exporters now have improved market access into Pakistan following successful technical negotiations between the two countries. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said improved market access into Pakistan created market opportunities for Australian growers and exporters. “These negotiations have delivered really positive outcomes for Australian farmers and exporters,” Mr Littleproud said. “Firstly, we will resume exporting canola to Pakistan, which has not occurred since 2016‑17. “Secondly, Pakistan has approved methyl bromide fumigation of chickpeas and lentils, and phosphine fumigation of wheat, which will reduce costs and give greater flexibility to exporters. “This also brings Pakistan into alignment with Australia, India and Bangladesh for preferred rates of fumigation, allowing for easier transhipment across the region. “Pakistan is an important trading partner for Australia. Australia’s agricultural exports to Pakistan grew 35 per cent year on year to $194 million in 2020.

“The negotiations demonstrate the value of the Government’s investments in expanding agricultural trade and our agriculture counsellor network over recent years. “These investments are vital not just for improving market access for Australian growers and exporters but also for strengthening our relationship with important trading partners.” Nick Goddard, CEO of the Australian Oilseeds Federation, welcomed the improved market access. “Australian canola growers need more overseas market options for their product, and developments such as this make accessing the Pakistan market just that much smoother for the Australian canola industry,” he said.

At the time of payment, the vast majority of the company’s facilities were operational. JBS USA CEO, Andre Nogueira, (right) said after consultation with internal IT professionals and third-party cyber-security experts, the company made the decision to mitigate any unforeseen issues related to the attack and ensure no data was exfiltrated. “This was a very difficult decision to make for our company and for me personally,” he said. “However, we felt this decision had to be made to prevent any potential risk for our customers.” Mr Nogueira said the FBI stated this is one of the most specialised and sophisticated cybercriminal groups in the world. JBS USA’s ability to quickly resolve the issues resulting from the attack was due to its cyber-security protocols, redundant systems and encrypted backup servers. The company spends more

than $200 million annually on IT and employs more than 850 IT professionals globally. The CEO said JBS USA has maintained constant communications with government officials throughout the incident. Third-party forensic investigations are still ongoing, and no final determinations have been made. Results of preliminary investigations confirm that no company, customer or employee data was compromised.

USQ leads soil research

University of Southern Queensland Professor of Soil Science and Agrimetrics, John Bennett, will lead a new research project that aims to support Australian farmers manage their soil to increase access to soil water. The “Assessing Soil Water Storage” project is one of 12 new research projects announced as successfully gaining funding support from the Soil CRC. Professor Bennett said the project aimed to quantify how the diagnosis and management of soil constraints could change soil water attributes such as infiltration, storage, drainage and crop interaction. “In a climate where every millimetre of water storage is invaluable, the project will allow greater precision in crop planning

and production, as well as help understand how management might increase or decrease the water available,” Professor Bennett said. “The project will report on mechanisms influencing the variability and dynamic of soil water storage and access. The main outcome will be the development of a protocol to develop pragmatic and data driven on-farm models, rather than seeking an ubiquitous predictive model based on global data.” Professor Bennett said it was hoped that this project

would pave the way for a bigger investment into understanding the soil water dynamic. “For our grower groups involved in the project, it will allow greater planning of on-farm decisions – the whole intent is to lower risk,” he said. The Soil CRC is funded by the Federal Government through the Cooperative Research Centre Program and by its 40 participant organisations, including eight universities, four state agencies, eight industry organisations and 20 farmer groups.
