CWA Oakey President Wendy Gordon, who addressed guests at the morning tea, said, “The first thing that comes to many people’s minds when you think of QCWA is tea and scones, so let’s have a ‘sconversation’.“Thehumble scone and Devonshire tea have certainly been symbolic of the QCWA,” she said. “The Association was established on 11th August back in 1922, with Ruth Fairfax as the first State President. “Behind all the aprons, scones and teapots are very determined ladies.” Ms Gordon said some of the initiatives the QCWA has been responsible for include supplying medical equipment to rural hospitals, lobbying for mandatory seatbelts in cars for road safety, sending stationary packs to poor countries, introducing audio rumble strips along highways and opening aged care homes including the one in Oakey (CWA House McLean Care). “A lot of people don’t know that all of those were resolutions put through the CWA branches to the government - this is a small sample of the QCWA’s achievements.”

Last week, the Oakey branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (CWA) hosted a morning tea at the Oakey Railway Station to celebrate 100 years of the CWA in Queensland.

Locals and travellers alike spent a morning in the sunshine at the Oakey Railway Station celebrating QCWA.

History of Brook Farm and Kippington

This land was originally part of Westbrook Station and adjoined Gowrie Station on the east. By 1900, Henry Burton, one of the six members of the Company, had bought all this land and named it “Brook Farm”. In February 1902, the northern section of this farm, consisting of 497 acres, was sold to C. S. Roberts from Bowen who intended going into dairying. Dissatisfied with this property, Roberts purchased “Goomburra” in May 1902 and sold “Brook Farm” to George Hando of Wellington, NSW who took up residence there by

January 1905 saw this property sold once again to William Kent II, eldest son of the late William Kent of “Euston”.Priorto this, he had owned “Dalgangal” Station on the Burnett River in partnership with his brother, Crofton, sixth son of the late WilliamWilliam.IIhad married Emily Celia Sly of “Strathmore”, Toowoomba at St. Luke’s Church, Toowoomba on November 29, 1882 and they had seven children (five sons and two daughters aged from 21 to 4) when they came to Oakey.Mr. H. Andrews had built the grand house on “Brook Farm” (now Dunshane) before they moved in February 1905. Following this purchase, William retained 230 acres on the northern side of the railway line and transferred 267 acres on the southern side of the line to his brother, Crofton, who had married May McLellan in Emerald on April 2, 1901.Crofton named his property “Kippington” where he also had a homesteadUnfortunately, built. William didn’t live long to enjoy his new property as he passed away, aged only 50, on February 7, 1906, almost exactly 32 years from the day his Father died. Kent Street in Oakey was named in their honour. To be continued... - Valerie Weise-Young

Since May 1898, all the land southward from Oakey Creek to the present 4AK Road bordering the eastern side of the Oakey Creek Reserve and old Toowoomba Road (now Hamlyn Road) belonged to the Oakey Creek Coal Company.

Ms Miller said there were two driving reasons for publishing this book. “The first was to show my children that we can do anything we put our minds to if we put in the hard“Thework.second reason was to put a smile on children’s face, especially those who don’t have a lot to smile about.”A portion of the proceeds for the first 1,000 books sold directly through the author’s website will be donated to Act for Kids – an Australian charity providing support services such as therapy, family intervention and education services to children and families who have experience, or are at risk of, child abuse and neglect. National Tree Day Reminder!

Before their first day on board a rescue helicopter, the retrieval registrars undergo rigorous training at the LifeFlight Training Academy. The intensive course requires doctors to learn specific pre-hospital and retrieval clinical skills and put them into practice at Simulation Training, learn helicopter winching operation techniques and for the first time, be taught via a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience. All new RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctors must also complete Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), so they’re prepared for the extremely unlikely event of a helicopterLifeFlightcrash.

Training Academy Instructor Shaun Gillott said the rigorous training includes being inverted and blacked out or blindfolded to simulate that they may not be able to see when conducting the egress. “It’s very important that we give the new doctors the opportunity to practice the skills that they would need if they are ever faced with the real situation,” he said.“At the end of the day, they’re all doctors who can treat people whenever they come across them. “This winch training is about how do we deliver those doctors to people who need them. “We can put someone down 250 feet, through the trees, to someone who’s had a motorbike accident, or fallen off the side of a cliff. “It’s one of the ways we deliver medical experts to where they need to be.” The scenarios are designed to mimic worstcase incidents the new doctors may be confronted with in real life, such as a multi-vehicle crash, a house party with a drug overdose, and a ship disaster.

Following his federal election win, Member for Groom Garth Hamilton has been appointed Deputy Chair of the House Standing Committee on Economics. Mr Hamilton said Toowoomba Region will have its voice heard in one of parliament’s most powerful institutions as the Committee can directly question the nation’s key financial institutions and regulators, including the Reserve Bank. The Committee also has the power to conduct far reaching policy inquiries. Mr Hamilton said it was a great honour to have been appointed to the role and looked forward to working with Chair Dr Daniel Mulino.“This is a crucial time for economic policy in this country with the rubber hitting the road in terms of rising interest rates and inflation,” he said. “Toowoomba Region’s businesses, industry and households will have a unique take on the impact of these national issues, and I’m here to listen. “I will be reaching out to key stakeholders in our local area, and I’d also encourage the community to get involved.” Previous inquiries conducted by the House Economics Committee include a review of the major banks and superannuation sector.
