Oakey’s Oz Day Grand P
The countdown is on for the annual Australia Day celebrations at Oakey with the organising committee pulling out all the stops to make sure the event goes ahead with most of the popular competitions, including a new addition not to be missed - Dunny Races. While many Australia Day events have been drastically changed across the region, the local organising committee has gone above and beyond to hold a fun-filled day which is also COVID Safe. Committee chairperson, Fay Telford, said the group has worked hard to bring the event to the community with most of the activities and morning tea free of charge. Continued on page 3 RIGHT: Australia Day committee member, Craig Commens, shows off his Dunny vehicle which is set to blow away the competition on Tuesday.

Australia Day event TRC votes on future goes ahead at Oakey use of Oakey Depot
Continued from page 1 “We are happy that the event can go ahead almost like previous years,” Mrs Telford said. “There is a limit of 1,500 people allowed at the event. Plus we will have hand sanitiser stations and will be observing social distancing. “Some events can’t go ahead because of COVID-19, like Tug-o-War. “We also won’t be having any activities in the creek.” Mrs Telford said many competitions are still going ahead as usual including billy boiling, the ironman - open and junior, the dry regatta and a new activity for 2021, the Dunny Races. She said locals can construct a ‘dunny’ cart which has to be humanpowered and safe for the competitors. For more information on the Dunny Races call Craig Commens on 0428 717 519. AWARDS CEREMONY Australia Day will kick off at Arthur Shooter Park from 8.30am with a welcome from Councillor Tim McMahon. Local resident, farmer and longterm QCWA Oakey branch secretary, Lois Speed, will then give her insights on what Australia Day means to her. This will be followed by the awards ceremony with the local Citizen of the
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) officers presented Councillors with a report outlining possible uses for the now closed Oakey Depot site, at the January Ordinary Council Meeting.
Special guests at Australia Day will be guest speaker, Lois Speed (above), and Cr Tim McMahon (below).
Year and other awards to be presented.
Rosalie awards invitation only
After planning a fun, family day out at the Goombungee Sports and Recreation Grounds, the Rosalie Australia Day committee has had to cancel the program due to COVID-19 restrictions, and open it to invited guests only. The event will now be held at the Goombungee Public Hall and only be open to award recipients and other invited guests. For more information on the changes call Toowoomba Regional Council on 131 872.
Australia Day at the Tavern
Following the official celebrations, the Bernborough Tavern is hosting a laid back Australia Day event packed with entertainment from 2pm to 6pm. Residents are invited to dress up in their favourite bogan outfit to enjoy an afternoon of fun at the Tavern. An egg and spoon race will be run to see who has the best coordination skills as well as a pie eating
competition and guess the weight of the meat tray. Singer Lisa Sutton will be performing throughout the event. For more information and expressions of interest for pie eating competition call 4692 0900.
A free morning tea will run from 9.30am and the activities will start at 10am. For competition entry forms and rules go to the Oakey Library, TRC Oakey Service Centre or the Oakey Community Services Facebook page. Remember to bring a chair, picnic blanket, hat and sunscreen.
The report featured four proposed options for the future of the site. The Council officers recommended the fourth option which would combine some Council and Community uses with a Manufacturing Industry Business Incubator Precinct section. The community use provision would ensure the future of the current SES and RV facilities as well as providing options to have other community groups at the site. The option would also allow Council to keep some of the site for its requirements, such as for storage The Business Incubator and Training Hub centre would be a first for the Toowoomba Region and would be modelled on the Business Enterprise Centre run by Ipswich Region Inc. It is envisioned that the centre would encourage business growth in the region and could house: - manufacturing start-ups; - transport and logistics start-ups; - recycling industry startups; - social enterprises; - youth employment/ training initiatives; or - long term unemployed training and employment programs. It is anticipated that the Councillors will vote to approve a business case for this recommended option. The three other options presented to Councillors included selling the site for single or multi-use
About 60 Council workers transferred from Oakey Works Depot at Lorrimer Street to the new Charlton site last year. commercial operations; converting the area to a fully community use premises; and to restore the Depot to Council use as a satellite, storage or a remodelled purpose. The report acknowledged that Council would have to gain approvals from the Queensland Government, which owns the land and has deemed it for use as ‘Quarry and Local
Government’. Any redevelopment of the site would also require Council to budget for upfront and ongoing costs. Council officers will prepare a detailed business case on the preferred option and the Property Services Branch is preparing a submission in the 2021/22 Capital Works program budget for consideration by Council.

A 35-years-old Kingsthorpe man was charged with unlicensed driving and mid-range drink driving after being stopped at a Charlton Roadhouse late on Friday night. The driver had his licence disqualified at Oakey Magistrates Court earlier in the day. This related to unlicensed driving and drink driving charges resulting from a traffic incident in
October 2020. The driver’s vehicle had its number plates confiscated for seven days. He will appear before Oakey Magistrates Court in February on the latest matters.

She was deeply attached to her husband and sank into deep depression following his demise and for the rest of her reign she wore black. This snippet appeared in the Brisbane Courier on

Approvals to import fall armyworm virus
The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has received approval to import a biopesticide for research purposes, marking a significant step in the fight to combat fall armyworm (FAW). Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) approval to import Fawligen® meant the Queensland Government could start working on management packages for impacted industries. “Since the initial detection of FAW in Australia in January 2020, DAF has worked closely with industry to find ways to address the threat posed by this voracious invasive pest to Queensland’s agriculture industry,” Mr Furner said. “Fawligen® is a biopesticide targeting the FAW caterpillar which ingests virus particles, becomes infected and dies, spreading the virus to other FAW larvae in the crop. “DAF first applied in March 2020 to bring Fawligen®, which is produced in the U.S. by
Australian company AgBiTech, into Australia. “Getting DAWE’s approval to import Fawligen®, a naturally occurring caterpillar virus which targets FAW, is a key step forward as it has the potential to be a game changer for producers.” Mr Furner said having access to Fawligen® would allow DAF researchers to immediately commence
small scale work with AgBiTech to assess its performance on FAW populations, under local conditions and in various crops. The latest advice about the impacts and management of fall armyworm on key crops can be found on the fall armyworm web page at business.qld.gov.au/ fallarmyworm

2020 by Elva and Len Fanning Well Twenty-Twenty was a bust; Can’t wait for it to bite the dust. Fires, floods, disease, and pestilence, Straight out of the old Testament. ‘Unprecedented’ times they say, So often, it’s now a cliché. Borders closed, loved ones forced apart. No cruise ships from our ports depart. The media has been bizarre, All reaching for a Walkley Star. Keep your distance, wash your hands. Be sure everyone understands. This virus can’t infect our shores. Stay home, alone, behind closed doors. When you must venture out, Be sure to cover your snout. COVID has proved belligerent. This year was vastly different. We quietly observed ANZAC Day; Candles at dawn in driveway. Seeing anyone was so rare; ‘Face-time’ became the way to care. Our hearts broke for Victorians. What a yarn for historians. Still celebrations did tick by, Reminding us how time does fly. Absence does make the heart grow fonder; More so when feet can’t wander. Elva and I are getting older; I wish I could say “and bolder”. Our normal life is quite mundane. In ISO we did not complain. The Oakey RSL turned eighty six, Gathered we all from one point five, to mix. The Oakey Bowls Club on Oakey Creek; At one point five we still had a meet. If we learnt anything this year. It is to cherish those we hold dear. For you and yours, our prayer is this, “That we meet again to hug & a kiss. Very Merry Christmas everyone. May God bless twenty-twenty-one.

Oakey koala Pat habitat thriving WEIR MP
The Oakey Urban Landcare group had no break over the Christmas and New Year period, undertaking regular watering and one planting at the local koala habitat to ensure the trees survive into 2021. Oakey Urban Landcare president, Trevor Cockburn, said the trees are growing well despite the stretches of dry weather and heat wave temperatures experienced late last year. “Overall everything came through very well. We have noticed some new shoots which is good to see,” he said. “We have been watering the habitat as much as we can and this has helped the trees survive. “We did have to plant about 35 replacement trees and remove ones that were damaged, probably by kangaroos.” Mr Cockburn said the group is preparing more trees to be planted into the habitat later this year. He said this will most likely occur in April or when the weather cools down. The habitat is structured in a corridor featuring lines of koala food trees to enable the animals to safely move through the area surrounding Arthur Shooter Park. It includes land off Beale and Stanley Streets and Oakey-Kelvinhaugh Road.

PREPARING FOR A NEW YEAR “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” Romans 12:12. As we look back on the challenges of 2020 so many people are hoping and praying for better things in 2021 but maybe we also need to stop and be grateful for where we are, too. I remember once reading about a prayer group who provided support for each other by regularly listing their concerns and then praying about them with a partner. Sometimes new partners were found by putting the lists in the centre of the group. One week the leader asked people to find a list they would like to work on with a partner. Everyone retrieved their own list and most thought that their ‘problems’ weren’t as hard to solve or bear as other members’ were. Wishing everyone all the best for 2021. We know every year has its ups and downs. May we learn and grow from the challenges we face and see better outcomes as a result. - June Evans, Anglican Church

Local boy competes QCWA to award dance bursary to local student for Darling Downs
The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) invites dance students from the Darling Downs to apply for a 2021 bursary worth $1,000.
A regular with the Oakey Cricket Club for several years, local student Sonny McCormack has taken his sporting skills further afield representing the Darling Downs and South West (DD & SW) region in the Ian Healy Cup. Held earlier this month, the Cup pits Under 12 representative sides against each other in a round robin competition played at several Brisbane fields. The DD & SW side played well, finishing second in its pool at the end of the five day competition.
The bursary is open to male or female students of any age who are accepted or enrolled to study dance at a tertiary level in 2021. Applications close on January 31. Students must have an address in the area covered by the Darling Downs Division which includes Toowoomba, Beauaraba, Crows Nest, Goombungee, Highfields, Kingsthorpe, Middle Ridge, Oakey and Upper Lockyer/ Withcott.
