Police chase ends in Oakey

A 25-years-old Stafford Heights man has been charged after an alleged violent theft of a vehicle at Taringa along with a string of other alleged offences across the state while he was fleeing from police. The events happened across South West Queensland between Sunday 10th April and Tuesday 12th April. The man has been charged with unlawful entry of a vehicle for committing an indictable offence at night (using violence), disabling in order to commit an indictable offence (Taringa), armed robbery (using personal violence) and unlawful use

of a motor vehicle. A 19-years-old woman was in a Toyota Landcruiser in Taringa when, at about 2am on Sunday, she was approached by a man who asked her for directions. It is alleged the man then physically assaulted the woman, grabbing her by the neck and strangling her several times and pulling her out of the vehicle. The woman was able to

fight and run away, but it is alleged the man then stole the Toyota Landcruiser. It is alleged the vehicle is linked to a string of offences across South West Queensland, including fuel drive-offs in Rolleston, Alpha, Longreach and Dingo. Police are also investigating an incident on Monday 11th April where at about 6pm, the

The next day, Tuesday 12th April, at 2.40pm police were called to reports of a man in a Toyota Landcruiser driving dangerously at Dulacca in Western Queensland. Allegedly, the vehicle was swerving into oncoming traffic causing other motorists to take evasive action in addition to which the driver of the vehicle pointed a firearm at a passing vehicle. Officers pursued the vehicle until Chinchilla where the pursuit was abandoned due to safety concerns. A second tyre deflation device was successfully deployed at Warra and allegedly when police attempted to intercept the Landcruiser, it collided with a police vehicle before continuing along the Warrego Highway. The vehicle was intercepted on Oakey Connection Road at Oakey, where the man was taken into custody. Anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage is urged to contact police.

TO THE PAST

Charlton Speedway’s 45th Anniversary

Downs Speedway Club started earthworks on the site of its proposed track at Charlton in June 1975.

Club president John Wagner had a meeting between speedway representatives and Jondaryan Shire Councillors at the site on June 2 to discuss aspects of the project The Council had approved the Club’s proposal to establish a speedway complex on 28 acres of land about 7 miles from the centre of Toowoomba in the Jondaryan Shire. On the previous Sunday, Club members had erected about 32 chains of fencing around the property. The Club had applied for a grant under the Regional

Employment Development scheme to help finance the track. The cost of the project, including eating and toilet facilities and lighting would probably be about $80,000. Mr.Wagner said the aim was to have the track and facilities ready for use by the Carnival of Flowers in September 1975. That didn’t happen, as the Charlton Speedway was only officially opened with a speedway meeting on Saturday evening, April 23, 1977. Even then, grandstands

and seating hadn’t been provided and patrons had to sit on the grassed viewing mounds. Now there are bigger fish to fry and plans are afoot for a $170 million Motorsport and Entertainment Precinct at Wellcamp by the Wagner Corporation. There will be some changes to Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support payments and services for Anzac Day.

All service centres and most phone lines providing Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services will close on Monday 25 April. Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen said self-service options would continue to be available during this period. “Our Express Plus mobile apps, phone self-service lines and online accounts are the easiest way to do business with us,” he said. “I encourage people to check their reporting dates on our website, through their Centrelink online accounts or via phone self-service.

The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day has attracted nominations from 120 horses this year which will compete across a wide range of events including ridden classes, classes in the plough ring, events which will see the heavy horses teamed with magnificently restored horse drawn vehicles and obstacle course events which showcase the strength and agility of the heavy horses. Entries have been received from some of Australia’s most highly regarded owners and breeders of heavy horses who will travel to Gatton from the Mid Coast area of

programme of classes and demonstrations outside the main ring including farrier competitions. This old age traditional skill is always of interest to many. Entertainment across the weekend will be provided by local Lockyer Valley performer Boyd Ridley who has garnered a following of fans with his easy listening performance style. Food and coffee will be available on the grounds from a number of food vans and a large number of stalls will be on site to browse. The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day is the longest running heavy horse event in Australia having begun in 1978 on a property in Coolana, before moving to Marburg and then to Gatton in 1992 to its current home at the Showgrounds. The event is solidly supported by the local community and as a result of sponsorship, hard working volunteers and a progressive committee the Gatton Field Days definitely look set to be an important feature on the heavy horse calendar for many years to come. Grants available for farmers to manage pests and weeds

Grants of up to $2 million are available for farmers to access safe and effective chemical solutions. The funding can help to manage priority pests and diseases that damage crop and livestock. The final round of the Australian Government’s eleven year assistance grants will provide farmers with the priority agvet chemicals they need to improve productivity.

The Federal Government has committed $25.7 million over eleven years from 2014 to 2024 to help farmers gain improved access to agvet chemicals. Since the program began in 2015, 208 grants totalling $13.9 million have been awarded. In 2020, estimates

Cattle owners are urged to look for signs of lumpy skin disease after recently confirmed cases in cattle in Indonesia. Lumpy skin disease is a highly infectious skin disease that affects cattle and water buffalo. It causes painful body lesions and impacts animal production. The disease is caused by a poxvirus and animals can become infected when bitten by insects including flies, mosquitoes and possibly ticks. The disease does not infect people. If lumpy skin disease does enter Australia, early detection is vital to rapidly contain the disease and limit its impacts. Symptoms include a fever over 41 degrees, watering eyes, increased nasal and salivary secretions, loss of appetite, reduction in milk production, depression and enlarged superficial lymph nodes. Within the first two days of the onset of fever, skin nodules of 2cm to 5cm in diameter develop, particularly on the head,

The significance of ANZAC Day Anzac Day is one of the most important days in our national calendar.

It is a time to reflect on the contribution made by past and present service personnel who have displayed great courage, discipline and self-sacrifice in choosing a life of service to their country and

community. While Anzac Day is forever linked to the ANZACs who died on 25th April 1915, we commemorate all of our service personnel who have served and died for

this great nation. Army Aviation Training Centre personnel look forward to the opportunity to reconnect with the community in Oakey and across the Darling Downs as we commemorate Anzac

Day together. We also have a special flypast of Army Aviation aircraft at these locations (timing is approximate and will be updated on our Facebook page closer to Anzac Day).

Causes of obesity in pets Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder seen in cats and dogs.

It’s estimated that over 40% of Australia’s pets are overweight. If your pet is overweight, they can develop all kinds of health problems, such as painful arthritis, heart disease, breathing difficulty, diabetes and even bladder cancer. For your pet the excess weight and the resulting health problems can mean less play time and depression. Here are some easily identifiable causes of weight gain in dogs: OVERFEEDING Dogs with unlimited access to food understandably eat more than they need. OVEREATING Many commercial foods are loaded with salt and fat. This improves taste, which means your dog will want to gorge. FEEDING HABITS Feeding table scraps and “people food” can lead to obesity. LACK OF EXERCISE Too much food and too little exercise. AGE Older, less active dogs are prone to weight gain. If you have noticed that
