In a win for the Oakey community, the funding will allow the Toowoomba PCYC to employ two specialist youth workers full-time for the next two years. This means beloved
program coordinator and youth worker Kat Medland will continue to work in Oakey. General Manager at New Acland Mine, Dave O’Dwyer said he was happy to announce New
Hope Group’s partnership with the PCYC for the next two years. “We’re here today not so much to talk about the mine and New Hope, but to talk about the PCYC and the community here in
Oakey,” he said. “It’s definitely not a publicity stunt and I object to it being called a publicity stunt, but we’ve always been really strong in the community.” - Continued on page 3.

Man drink drove for asthma puffer
Shane Seaton pleaded guilty in the Oakey Magistrates Court to a single charge of drink driving. On 19th June 2022, Police caught the driver of a Holden Commodore in Goombungee with a BAC of 0.102, which is above the middle alcohol limit. Mr Seaton’s lawyer said the 61 years old man is not an alcoholic by any means and simply got carried away. Mr Seaton provided a character reference and a letter from his Doctor to support him. “Mr Seaton suffers depression and emphysema and is an asthmatic,” his lawyer said. “He was at a trivia night in Goombungee and went to his car to retrieve his asthma puffer,” he said. “But when he realised his puffer wasn’t in the car, that’s when he made the mistake of driving home to get it. Magistrate O’Callaghan acknowledged that Mr Seaton has completed a defensive driving program and that he also needs his licence to receive medical treatment at hospital in Toowoomba. She gave him a $600 fine and suspended his licence for six months.

Man breaks DV order, busts victim’s lip Anthony Chase pleaded guilty to four charges at the Oakey Magistrates Court last Friday. Mr Chase was charged with two counts of drug driving, contravening a domestic violence (DV) order and breaching probation. Early last year, he was caught by Police once with cannabis in his saliva and another time with both cannabis and methamphetamine in his system whilst driving. Additionally, he was not complying with his probation order in September 2020. In February 2022, he contravened a DV order by visiting the protected person’s address in Goombungee at about
9.15pm. A neighbour called Police and alleged they heard the female victim saying, “stop hitting me” and that they could hear furniture being thrown around. During the ordeal, Mr Chase allegedly attempted suicide by taking an electric razor into the shower. At one point he placed his hands over the female’s mouth to stop her from yelling and alerting the neighbours. She suffered a bleeding lip which Police witnessed when they arrived. A lawyer representing
Mr Chase said his client experienced an unstable childhood and suffers from PTSD which he was diagnosed with after a serious truck crash. He said that at the time of the incident, both he and his partner where using methamphetamine, but now they are both clean from the drug. “He’s come before the court today a different man than he was before,” his lawyer said. Magistrate Kellie O’Callaghan convicted Mr Chase with twelve months probation, a disqualified licence for three months and a $250 fine.
Young mum caught with meth
Addison Terry-Morriss pleaded guilty in the Oakey Magistrates Court to possessing a dangerous drug and possessing utensils associated with a dangerous drug. On 10th June 2022, Police executed a search warrant at a local address and discovered 0.17 grams of methamphetamine along with plastic straws and a plastic pipe. Ms Terry-Morriss is a 19
years-old Oakey resident who is now mum to an eight months old baby. Her lawyer explained how Ms Terry-Morriss grew up with parents using methamphetamine and that it was

time, it gives you a bit of relaxation to know you’ve got a future out here.” Sgt. Crisp said without this last-minute funding, the Oakey program would’ve certainly closed. “We will now have a second Kat and have two workers out here, and I’ll supplement them with staff from Toowoomba… so it’ll get bigger and stronger. “We recently had a big community day with over 400 people attending. “You quite often hear that Oakey is the forgotten neighbour and we’re trying to fill that hole. “Our goal working with New Hope is to make these kids more productive, keep them in school and get them a job. “And through my programs we can get them a driver’s licence and then potentially get them a job on the mine. “That’s what youth development is all about – let’s take the kids from where they are now to productive citizens.” Program Coordinator for Oakey Connect Kat Medland said she was speechless when she found out she could stay here working with the youth in Oakey. “I was shocked and I just wanted to tell the rest of Oakey when I found out, but I couldn’t,” she said. She said youth development and engagement is the best way to help young people stay out of trouble. “You build a rapport and a relationship with the

“The PCYC reached out looking for support and they went to state and federal looking for support through their usual channels and couldn’t get it,” Mr O’Dwyer said. “We’re really proud to have stepped in and provided them with certainty for the next two years. “We’re also in talks right now with the PCYC about how else we can help out as well, not just financially, but also through interaction with the mine and helping out with some of their programs.” Youth club manager for Toowoomba PCYC Sergeant Cam Crisp said he was thankful for New Hope coming to the party at the eleventh hour. “We’ve been out here for a year and half in the Oakey community doing good things,” he said. “We have been advocating for funding for quite some time. Sgt. Crisp said it was tremendous news for Oakey and the young people out here, and that it’s great news that there’s potential for funding beyond two years. “In the world that I live in, most contracts are twelve months. “Which means you’re working for six months, then you’re working for six months to get the contract renewed. “Two years is just good news. “It basically takes the pressure off, so rather than chasing my tail all the
kids, you see them all the time, you see them at the skatepark, you pull over and have a chat with them and see how everything’s going.” Kat said she wants to continue running the existing programs, including the weekly box out sessions, girls groups, ladder program (which transitions year 6s to year 7) and the fitness challenge. “Mainly the Breaking the Cycle program, which aims to help young people get their licence because a lot of people out here don’t have transport or access to get to Toowoomba,” she said. Kat said she has aspirations to introduce and implement a mental health program. Over the past 20 years, New Hope Group has donated more than $7 million to local community groups, including to schools in the Oakey District, the Lions Club of Oakey, Goombungee Golf Club, Oakey Chamber of Commerce and Oakey Hospital. “Our track record of providing social and community support to many, varied community groups over the past two decades speaks for itself,” New Hope Group said. “We are grateful for the encouragement of our many supporters and we intend to continue to proudly support the Oakey and Darling Downs communities.”

Mirror TO THE PAST History of “Euston” town and station
Edmund Morey, aged 20, met the Tyson brothers at the Lachlan River in 1846 when he was droving 1000 head of cattle towards the South Australian border in search of good pastoral country.
This is Edmund Morey’s original homestead that was built on the banks of a lovely billabong near the Murray River in 1848 and is still standing today. - Photo, Valerie Weise-Young
Following in the steps of Sturt and Mitchell, Edmund travelled to the area and established “Euston” station. A township sprung up nearby on the Murray River and by 1853 the town became an important outpost in this area of New South Wales. It became an important port during the days of the riverboat trade and was also a major river crossing with a punt which carried people, vehicles and goods across the river. The considerable trade resulted in a Customs House being established for stock movements and

trade and the town was proclaimed in 1885. During this period, considerable pastoral development took place and the town grew to support two hotels, a wharf, police station and about fifty houses. One interesting feature of Euston was the establishment of a eucalyptus oil processing plant. It is claimed that this product was the first distinctively Australian product sold on the world market. The end of the riverboat trade, however, signalled a decline in Euston’s fortunes
and the completion of the road and rail bridge accentuated this. Nearby Robinvale, on the Victorian side of the river, is now the main town. The Euston-Robinvale Customs House Museum is a tourist attraction on the Sturt Highway. “Euston” station derived its name from the stately mansion in Suffolk, England, called “Euston Hall” and owned by the Earl of Grafton. Euston is also one of the oldest townships in New South Wales. The story is to be continued next week... - Valerie Weise-Young

Josh Arnold pays visit to Jondaryan State School
With Jondaryan State School’s 150th Celebrations just around the corner, the students collaborated with Josh Arnold of Small Town Culture in June to write a song and produce a video which will be shown at the school’s Open Day and Reunion on Saturday, September 3rd. The students enjoyed working with Josh and putting words in the song, as well as going to the Jondaryan Woolshed to do some filming. Lyrics incorporated life on the Darling Downs, from the rich black soil to the native wildlife we may encounter, to past generations and the woolshed, whilst looking to the future and the growth of our school. We hope that many past and present students, staff and community members come along to the school’s Open Day and Reunion. The new school gates,

Vehicle crashes into tree at Aubigny
A male in his 50s was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital after a single-vehicle crash on O‘Brien Road at Aubigny last week. A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service said the crash happened last Wednesday, 13th July, at 6.19pm. A male patient in stable condition was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital with a suspected
shoulder injury. Oakey Police attended the scene and said the crash is still under investigation. Police said the man, who lived locally, sustained minor injuries and was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Three drink Petition to keep buildings at drivers caught the Jondaryan Woolshed
Over the past fortnight, Oakey Police caught three drink drivers, with two in the low-range and one in the middle-range alcohol limit. Senior Constable Warren Scheff said both of the lowrange offenders, a male in his 30s and a male in his 60s, blew a 0.50 which is on the cusp of the legal limit. It was on Saturday 9th July that Police caught a male in his 60s in the
middle-range BAC. Police remind the community to be mindful of how much you are drinking before getting behind the wheel because you can still be fined even if you are equal to the legal limit.
Car hits cow
Last week, a driver hit a cow on Kelvinhaugh Yalangur Road near the Oakey Army Base. Oakey Police said the single vehicle involved in the crash was towed from the scene and the driver only sustained minor injuries, not needing to be transported to hospital. Police said the location of the crash was near where a man died in floodwaters
just over six months ago. They said the cow was black and the crash occurred at nighttime, making it difficult for the driver to stop in time. Senior Constable Warren Scheff said it would have been very hard to see the black cow against the black road at night.
P-plater nearly 40km over
Oakey Police caught a P-plater driver travelling 139 kilometres per hour in a 100 km zone. The driver was travelling along the Warrego Highway between Kingsthorpe and Oakey last week when detected by Police. Senior Constable Warren Scheff said with the new
increased fines, the driver would be facing a $1,078 fine. The driver was driving just 1 kilometre below the next fine bracket which would have seen them lose their licence for six months.
24 Hour patrols to stop stolen cars
Oakey Police have begun conducting 24 hour patrols to combat the number of stolen cars in the local region. Last week, Police began the 24 hour patrols and successfully located a few stolen cars over Thursday and Friday. Senior Constable Warren Scheff said the recovered
cars were stolen from Toowoomba and found in Oakey. Police remind residents to ensure their cars are locked at all times and that keys are kept hidden.
Oakey man Douglas Doelle has started a petition demanding that the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) does not relocate any of the buildings on the Jondaryan Woolshed site to Highfields, with Council stating no decisions have been made yet. Mr Doelle said this petition is about getting answers and making sure that TRC is being transparent. “Highfields get everything,” he said. “And these buildings were donated to the people of Jondaryan. “You can’t just take them away. The petition to Council includes two demands: 1. Stop the Toowoomba Regional Council from moving any buildings or items from the display of the Jondaryan Woolshed site to Highfields or any other location outside of Jondaryan. 2. Additionally, we want the Jondaryan Woodshed open before Christmas 2022. If there’s any safety issues with any of the buildings, surely they can be fenced off. Mr Doelle said he became aware of the Council’s plan after speaking with Deputy Mayor Geoff McDonald at the Kingsthorpe Councillor Visit last month. “I asked him about it and his only answer was that two of the buildings didn’t suit the Jondaryan Woolshed display and that nothing had been finalised yet. “It’s not fair for the buildings and parts of the display to be taken away from them and given to the Highfields community. Mr Doelle said the second demand will ensure tourism and money is brought back to the town. “The Woolshed brings a lot of tourism to the town and local area and I’ve spoken to people recently who have driven from Brisbane trying to see it, but it’s closed. “Also the local community should be able to go back and visit the site. “We visited for that morning tea, so why can’t we go back?
Principal petitioner Douglas Doelle has been visiting and speaking with residents in surrounding towns. TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said the Council is committed to re-opening the facility in the near future and that no decision has been made to move any displays at this point in time. “Toowoomba Regional Council, in conjunction with the Friends of the Jondaryan Woolshed and other key stakeholders, is developing an appropriate operating model for the woolshed into the future,” he said. “There is still work to be done in determining what the reopening looks like for visitors and the community. “No decisions have been made to move any displays at this point in time. “While TRC intends to review the myriad of displays at the woolshed, the priority to this point has been on the operating
model with a full and comprehensive review of displays yet to be undertaken.“ Friends of Jondaryan Woolshed Secretary Graham Turner said the group has not been part of any discussion regarding moving any of the buildings. “It has never been considered that any buildings were to be shifted nor ever mentioned in any discussions within
this process,” he said. “Also I would doubt the economic rationale behind shifting buildings, given the cost of shifting and relocation. “The steering committee is also working towards the progressive reopening of the site and there has been a lot of volunteer and often unrecognised work done well before January 2022 striving to realise the full re-opening of Woolshed site.”

Doctors’ stark FMD warning GRDC headed for Pittsworth
Australia is on high alert with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) just next door in Indonesia and doctors are warning to “throw your thongs away” if you’ve been overseas to Bali recently. The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) is calling on everyone who has been or is planning to travel to Indonesia to be extremely cautious when returning to rural communities. “FMD is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs,” RDAA President Dr Belot said. “Unfortunately, if it gets on to a farm, this results in all of the livestock being euthanased and the carcasses burned. “This is clearly devastating to the owners,
extremely damaging to their mental state and health, and would have a huge impact on their local rural economy and community. “When I’m not at work I help out on our beef farm. “We have spent seven years breeding up our herd – a fraction of the time of many other farmers – and I know that if we had to slaughter our livestock we would be completely heartbroken. “Aussie farmers have been doing it tough for so many years now, between drought, fires, floods and

COVID. “The very last thing they need is the added stress of a potential exotic disease outbreak, or much worse… an actual one. “While Australia has strict biosecurity protocols to prevent high risk materials, such as contaminated equipment or clothing, animals and animal products, it is essential that we all take these seriously when returning home. “Anyone returning to Australia after visiting a farm or interacting with livestock abroad should www.topp.com.au www.topp.com.au

declare this upon their return, so steps can be taken to remove the risk of transmission through contaminated clothing or dirty shoes. “If you’ve just been to Bali, don’t bring any animal products back, throw your thongs away, and stay off the farm until your clothes have been washed and shoes disinfected. “If you are a farmer, be hyper-vigilant with people who come into contact with your livestock and make sure they haven’t been in Bali or anywhere else in Indonesia for at least a week.” Anyone keeping or working with cattle, sheep, goats or pigs should be aware of the signs of FMD, which includes blisters on the mouth and drooling or limping animals. If livestock exhibit any unusual signs, call their veterinarian or Australia’s Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.
