Chamber of Commerce Brimblecombe Road committee returned works to start soon

Local resident Bec Meacham will continue her role as Oakey Chamber of Commerce president after she was re-elected to the position in front of a large crowd at the Oakey RSL last Tuesday night.

Guest chairperson Adair Donaldson (second from left) with the continuing Oakey Chamber of Commerce committee of treasurer Shane Williamson, president Bec Meacham, secretary Carla Jervis and vice president David Cooper. Business owner, David Cooper, was re-elected as vice president as well as Carla Jervis continuing as secretary and Shane Williamson accepting the role as treasurer. Mrs Meacham thanked the committee for its support over the past year. “Thank you for the incredible work you do for the Oakey Chamber and for our community,” she said. “Thank you for being passionate advocates for our town and always stepping up when things get difficult.” She also highlighted the work of fellow community groups in achieving change and progressing Oakey. “I am soo grateful for the volunteers in this community,” Mrs Meacham

said. “I celebrate your success and I also see the struggles. “I see groups achieving amazing things with soo few volunteers. “I see volunteer burnout, I know of the sleepless nights and the lost time with family. But my goodness we achieve soo much for a small community.” Mrs Meacham said the Chamber is looking forward to a bumper year which is set to include workshops, networking events and the return of Santa Fair. She said residents should keep an eye out for the launch of the Why Leave Town program made possible thanks to a Toowoomba Regional Council Economic Development grant.

Safety upgrades at the Warrego Highway and Brimblecombe Road intersection are set to commence next month and will provide a safer journey for local residents. Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said $2.75 million would be spent to improve safety at the intersection. “The upgraded intersection will allow enough space for vehicles turning right into Brimblecombe Road to move out of the path of eastbound traffic,” Mr Joyce said. “The improvements will reduce the risk of repeating the tragic rearend crashes we’ve seen in the past.” Queensland Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the upgrades would be welcomed by both locals and heavy vehicle operators. “The project will widen the intersection and install a dedicated, right-turn lane for vehicles to safely move out of the flow of through traffic before turning into Brimblecombe Road,” he said. “It will also provide increased visibility for vehicles turning out of Brimblecombe Road. “The recent crashes have earned this intersection

Member for Groom Garth Hamilton said the intersection is in dire need of safety upgrades. an unfortunate reputation, and the increased safety will be a relief to many locals.” Member for Groom Garth Hamilton said he is excited to see that the works have a start date. He said the tragic fatal crash which killed a mother and daughter in October 2018 as well as the countless near misses and minor crashes made the upgrades a top priority. “It has taken a lot of work with the State Government to get that upgrade scheduled,” Mr

Hamilton said. “Absolutely everyone in the area and everyone who remembers that incident, everyone who drives that road will be very happy to see that work done. “It is something we are committed to and something that we have been pushing for and I will be amongst the first people there the moment it is completed.” Works are scheduled to start in August and be completed by February, weather permitting.

TO THE PAST

History of No. 2 Cherry Street

In December 1898, Heinrich Richard Schreyer, Oakey’s first saddler, purchased Sub. 1, Portion 129 from Thomas Joseph Allen.

This Sub comprised the three re-subdivisions along Cherry Street, Oakey from the main street to Connelly Lane (now Lorrimers, Wonderley & Hall and

CrossFit Gym). In April 1909, he sold re-subs two and three and kept re-sub one where he lived. He retained this allotment until December 1946 when he sold it to Clifford and Mary Dornbusch who had decided to open a small engineering and welding business in Oakey. The business grew and during the early 1950s, the house was shifted to 19 Old Toowoomba Road (now 51 Lorrimer Street) which remained their home. The existing three steel buildings were constructed to cover the entire block. In October 1973, the stock and plant were sold and the business closed. The sheds were purchased by Les Bourke, an

auto electrician, who rented them out. Sometime in the early 1970s, a lot of street numbers throughout Oakey were changed, hence this block became No. 3. On Thursday, July 18, 1974, a new business venture opened in Oakey at 3 Cherry Street trading as “The Attic” and was managed by Mrs Jeanette McConnel of Toowoomba in conjunction with her father, Mr Baden Rush (grandfather of actor Geoffrey Rush) who was well known in Oakey and surrounding districts where he had business and farming interests for 45 years. They sold some new furniture as well as old. Consulting surveyor, Bryan McConnel (Jeanette’s husband), extended his

Bowenville has their sights set on Ekka glory

After COVID-19 prevented them from showcasing their skills last year, the talented Bowenville State School students alongside teacher Fallon Wise are hard at work perfecting their cheese making abilities ready to enter their products in the Ekka next month. The students will be entering blue cheese and camembert products into the Student Made Cheese competition at the Ekka. The primary aged students will compete against schools from across the district including some high schools. With blue cheeses, named ‘Bowen Blue’ and ‘Bluey’, and camembert, titled ‘Bert’ and ‘Creamy’, the Bowenville team hopes to top its third place in 2018 and match the success of fellow student Jimmy Finch who took home a first with his 171kg pumpkin earlier this year.

Senate motion backs New Acland

A motion put forward by Tasmanian Liberal Senator Jonathon Duniam narrowly succeeded in the Federal Parliament recently moving that the Senate call on the Queensland Government to approve all outstanding applications relating to New Acland Stage 3.

POST

Senator Duniam who is Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries and Assistant Minister for Industry Development moved the motion at the request of Queensland Senator Paul Scarr. The motion noted that coal mining at Acland has employed locals for over 92 years and helped support the town of Oakey over that time as well as the current project waiting over 14 years for an answer. “If Stage 3 of the mine proceeds the mine would

provide secure employment for 481 full time employees,” the motion continued. “The Queensland state government is refusing to issue a mining lease or water licence for the Acland mine extension until court cases are resolved, a test they have not applied for other coal mines in Queensland, “Already more than 200 coal miners have lost their jobs thanks to Queensland Government delays, and more face the sack at the end of July as the mine is forced into care and

maintenance, “Businesses in Oakey are struggling because of the reduced economic activity at the mine.” The motion ended by asking for the Senate to support calling on the Queensland Government to issue the mining lease and water licence to New Acland which would, “save jobs and protect the future of the town of Oakey”. Senators present at the vote supported the motion 26 to 25. The narrow win was

Innovation at Oakey Beef

A group of over 20 people attended the recent Oakey Chamber of Commerce breakfast which featured a tour of the Oakey Beef Exports facilities. Continued from page 1 Local business owners, community representatives, Toowoomba Region Councillors and Member for Condamine Pat Weir toured the facility on Thursday. Mr Coleman said the new cold room facility extends the storage and processing capacity of the plant, increasing the capacity by about a third. The new facility can accommodate both frozen and chilled products. “Like a lot of the facilities, we didn’t have enough room for the chilled and frozen products. That was our biggest restraint,” Mr Coleman said. He said one example of the increase in capacity since commissioning the new building is that the company is now storing 61,000 cartons of frozen goods up from 26,000 cartons with more room to increase this figure. Mr Coleman said the

technology is some of the best in Australia and provides opportunities for staff to upskill and move away from more manual labour tasks. He said the new system sees cartons move through the boning room and offal rooms into storage via conveyor belt. He said when a carton is needed, the system moves it to the robotic area which packs the cartons into pallets ready to be loaded. “Before we were picking up the carton seven times, now the aim is to pick it up once or zero. So it is all robotic or conveyer,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing what Justin [Caldwell] and the team has put together. “It’s a huge difference. It’s a saving to the plant of about 40 units of labour. But I can guarantee that 40 units will be gobbled up somewhere else in the plant, so no one has lost their job here.

“We have three guys who have been trained up to run the robot system. “There has been people here who have increased their wages from this system. Anyone who wants to step up can.” Mr Coleman said while this system isn’t a first, the integration of both chilled and frozen in one facility is a big innovation. “In Australia there is only two or three plants that have done this type of system,” he said. “The frozen side is the normal part but what we have done here in Oakey is do a chilled side as well, which I don’t think anyone in Australia has done.” Mr Coleman said this large scale project is not the end for Oakey Beef Exports. He said owners, NH Foods are keen to use more technology throughout the plant. “We are at the stage now we’re looking, we have

two robots now and we are looking at where else we can get robots in the system like the kill floor and boning room to help us,” he said. Mr Coleman said the increase in automation at the plant will not impact employment levels at the site. He said if anything, the increase in rain and cattle numbers means there will be a need for more staff. “The cattle herd is starting to rebuild,” he said. “I think by the end of 2022 we should start seeing some really good numbers again and by 2023 we will be having that many cattle we won’t be able to process them.” Oakey Beef currently has about 740 employees and this will push out to about 800 when cattle numbers improve. “This will be better for the wider community and for the town,” Mr Coleman said.
