A 30-years-old man from Pierces Creek has been arrested and charged with trespass, stealing and wilful damage offences at a Toowoomba Regional Council works depot on Kingsthorpe Haden Road, Haden.
Last Sunday, Police responded to information that a person had entered the secured yard at the worksite and was observed moving around near a backhoe parked at the site. When Police from Goombungee, Oakey and Highfields arrived at the scene, the offender had fled on foot into an adjoining paddock.TheToowoomba Dog Squad also attended and used a police dog to track and arrest the offender. The offender’s vehicle was located nearby and after further investigation, it was determined that the offender was also responsible for additional offences in the Oakey area in the past few weeks. The Officer-in-Charge at Goombungee Police Station Sergeant Mick Lingard said after being arrested the offender was held in custody and is due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

In my fifth year as President of the Oakey Show, it is a pleasure to invite the community to attend the show on this Saturday the 27th of August. A different date has led to a different program for the show, however the committee has worked together to bring an entertaining event for all ages to enjoy.

Early in the year when the decision was made to postpone the show, the process began to choose another date, with our Annual Team Penning already on this date the committee decided to add to this popular event. This weekend will be the first time the Marsh Pavilion will be open for the public to enjoy.
I am sure you will be impressed with this fabulous building and its benefits. The Marsh Pavilion is where you will find the market stalls. The 114th Oakey Show will be opened at 10am by our 2022 Rural Ambassador Mrs Alex Peters.
Three new Life Members will receive their Life Membership badges from our Patron Mrs Kathie Lange during the opening. Entry to the show this year is only $5 per person, with under 12 years free. I hope you can attend the show on Saturday and have a great day out at the 2022 Oakey Show.

Last Friday, St Monica’s and Oakey State School banded together to host a giant Under 8s Day event.
I have recently attended the National Homelessness Conference in Canberra. The message is that the housing crisis cannot be solved by simply throwing more money at it. This is a nationwide problem, and it will require all levels of government working together to solve it. As Deputy Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Economics, I will make sure that Groom’s issues are being listened to in Canberra. I will continue listening and working hard for you.
“This shows we are reachable and that we care for all of our regional townships,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said. “It also sends a clear message we are invested in these areas and that we want to hear the issues which are most important to our residents in those communities.“Having meetings in the smaller communities would provide an opportunity for school groups and residents to interact with us more and it would allow for individuals in those areas to give delegations to Council.”

“Three lucky winners will be chosen to travel to Parliament House in Canberra with their guardians to present their speech.”Mr Hamilton said first speeches come in all shapes and sizes, and the competition allows students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to express their political views by submitting a 90-second speech.

“A Member’s first speech is a longstanding tradition that provides an opportunity for them to speak about issues they are passionate about,” he said. “The ‘My First Speech’ competition gives students the perfect opportunity to have their say on issues close to their heart. “The competition encourages students to imagine themselves as newly-elected Members.
The number one issue people have been raising with me as I travel around our region is housing. Whether it is housing affordability or housing availability, there isn’t a corner of Groom that is not affected by the crisis. Young people are struggling to save a deposit, rental property vacancy rates are at all-time lows, and empty nesters have very limited options for downsizing.

“We all get feedback about not being accessible enough so we need to look at ways we can change this as we genuinely want to hear from each community member in the Toowoomba Region,” she said. “The effects of COVID have been felt right across our Region and the impacts of the pandemic have restricted some of our planned community engagement.”Atthe Ordinary Meeting of Council last week, Councillors unanimously supported a motion for a report to be presented in October, which would outline a variety of options and officer recommendations for additional engagement of Councillors into regional communities.Aspartof this report, Council will investigate the proposal of conducting quarterly Ordinary Meetings of Council in regional townships.

Sadly, the crisis is also driving up the incidence of homelessness in Groom, especially amongst women aged 55 and above. When access to safe and secure housing is unavailable, it can impact a person’s health, employment, and relationships.
Federal member for Groom Garth Hamilton is encouraging all students to enter the Commonwealth Parliament’s ‘My First Speech’ competition.
