“We have decorated the store and counter,” she said. “We also have a donation box on the counter for customers to put money into, which we will send off

Have your say on Do you want to E-scooters and E-bikes work in Council?

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on a six-month trial for an e-scooter and e-bike hire scheme in Toowoomba. Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Committee Portfolio Leader Cr Melissa Taylor has asked members of the public to bring forward any feedback they have by 12 August. “Around Queensland, E-scooters and other E-micromobility devices

like E-bikes, are becoming popular as an affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transport,” she said. “We want to gauge if they will be an appropriate transport for our community. “Using the survey on Council’s Your Say page,

we’re keen to hear from all members of the community and their views. “This includes current users, potential users of the proposed hire scheme and those within the community with any concerns about the project for Council to take into consideration as the trial is developed. “There are options for residents to contact the team if they’re not able to provide feedback via the website, including at popup information stands in the CBD over the coming weeks. “Feedback will be used by Council to help shape the proposed E-micromobility trial. “If there is interest from the community and potential suppliers are identified then we will consider a trial, possibly beginning at the end of this year.” Consultation is now open and available until 12 August 2022. Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is implementing a new training program which aims to upskill locals and help them get temporary and casual jobs in Council. TRC is calling for expressions of interest for a new in-house casual and temporary employment pool (TEMPO Pool). Finance and Business Strategy Committee Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the TEMPO program aims to address the number of vacancies within Council’s workforce. “In the current market there is a lot of competition for jobs and we need to ensure we’re doing everything we can to attract potential suitors to our organisation so we can continue delivering quality outcomes for our community,” he said. “We are looking for people for both our indoor and outdoor temporary employment pools. “The ideal candidate should have some background in the relevant field, be highly motivated, readily available and have a willingness to learn. “Council will provide

training to develop or upgrade skills to increase employability with our organisation. “At its core, this is a community outreach program. “We understand our Region demographics and know there are a lot of people who are struggling to find work and remain disadvantaged. “We particularly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with a disability, migrants, mature age jobseekers, school leavers, people re-entering the workforce after a lengthy absence and veterans to apply.” TRC Finance and Business Strategy Portfolio Leader Cr Kerry Shine said as one of the biggest employers in the Region, the program was an opportunity for local job seekers to get a foot in the door. “TEMPO isn’t designed

to train people from scratch. “Applicants should have some background in the relevant area and a positive attitude is a must,” he said. “Participants who successfully complete the training and demonstrate high performance throughout the program may have the opportunity to join Council’s pool of casual and temporary employees. “We see this as a great way to help our community get back into the workforce after a particularly challenging couple of years.” For more information on how you can apply, visit the Council website or call them on 131 872 between 8.30am to 5.15pm Monday to Friday. Applications for the Administration and Customer Service Pool and the Outdoor Pool close early Ausust.

My first column since the federal election is a great opportunity to thank you, the people of Groom, for allowing me to serve you again in our nation’s parliament. The election result was heard loud and clear and there is much work to do. Under Peter Dutton’s leadership, we are already reasserting our LNP values.

Our new pension plan is to double the income threshold for aged and veteran service pensioners before losing payments. Employers are screaming out for workers, and this will help alleviate the labour shortages businesses are experiencing in almost every sector.

We should do everything we can to ensure our senior citizens and veterans maintain dignity through their

continued contribution to our workforce. Our plan allows pensioners to better manage their financial position and gain more reward-for-effort.

Australia faces many challenges, including inflation, cost of living, and interest rate rises. I will be working hard with Peter Dutton to deliver credible policy, with real solutions, to the fundamental problems our nation faces. I’ll keep working hard for you,

Last week, fire crews and paramedics responded to a reported bathroom fire in Oakey. A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said they received a call at 11.07pm on Tuesday 19th July and sent paramedics to the address on Cooper Avenue, Oakey. However, no patients were reported at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said four fire crews arrived at the scene at about 11.15pm. The fire is being treated as not suspicious and crews were able to extinguish the fire within minutes of arriving.

Construction was halted and the site was sitting abandoned for some time, but the new Oakey service station has finally opened its doors to the community. The new service station provides fuel to both car users and trucks, and has a PieFace drive-through. Progress seemed to be back underway at the beginning of the year, which saw the closure of a section of OakeyPittsworth Road. According to the Queensland Traffic website, these works started on the 24th March and were expected to be completed by 17th June 2022. With rehabilitation of the site ongoing, Bridge Street Quarry Development Advisory Committee Chair Cr Kerry Shine said it was important to advance discussions with the State Government to progress the proposal further. “This is a long-term dream that will require substantial funding in order for us to reach the full potential of what can be achieved on this site,” he said. “To make sure we’re in a position to take advantage of any funding opportunities that may arise, Council will organise a delegation to visit the Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport, Stirling Hinchliffe and the Director-General for Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, John Lee. “While the State Government has previously shown interest

More rain to come with a possible 3rd La Niña

According to latest modelling from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), increased rainfall is expected to persist into November with the BOM forecasting a fifty per cent chance of a third La Niña to return in 2022. The BOM has said that all five climate models surveyed are forecasting for the negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) weather pattern to persist until November. A negative IOD occurs when there is a warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern Indian Ocean on Australia’s west coast, coupled with westerly winds driving increased cloudiness in north-

western Australia. A negative IOD will deliver a higher chance of increased rainfall west of the Great Dividing Range for eastern Australia, setting up and supporting favourable grass and pasture availability into the key growing season of spring. As a result of the wetter than average spring and warmer air temperatures

following winter, a negative IOD will provide an opportunity to improve the finished quality of livestock prior to sale. Improved weight gain performance, finished quality of stock and optimal grazing conditions that will be supported by this increased rainfall will continue to underpin Australia’s herd rebuild and flock growth across the eastern seaboard.

Be on the lookout for these livestock diseases

Biosecurity Queensland is encouraging livestock owners including those with cattle, buffalo, camels, sheep, goats, deer and pigs to be prepared and on the lookout for lumpy skin disease (LSD), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and African swine fever (ASF). While LSD, FMD, and ASF are not present in Australia, if introduced, they pose a significant impact on production, businesses and families. Livestock owners are reminded that feeding pigs food that contains or has been in contact with meat, eggs and untreated cooking fats and oils (swill feeding) is illegal, as it can spread animal diseases. This is a timely

reminder after viral fragments of FMD and ASF were confirmed in a small number of products in Australia which were tested as part of routine surveillance by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Owners are strongly

advised to look for and know the signs of LSD (cattle and buffalo), FMD (cloven-hoofed animals) and ASF (pigs) and to report any suspect cases to your veterinarian and the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 immediately.

Trooper Sally Campbell: Army recruit and chef extraordinaire! Trooper Sally Campbell began her career training as an Aviation Groundcrew Aircraft Support (GCAS) trainee at Oakey’s Swartz Barracks base in early May this year. Trooper Campbell has been in the Australian Army for one year and three months now and said her favourite aspect has been the support and friendliness she’s experienced. “I do like the structure that is here,” she said. “You’ve always got someone you can talk to and ask questions who has the experience and will help you. After working in several jobs that were not a great fit, she said joining the Army has been “like a breath of fresh air for me.” “I like the community aspect of it all. “You come in here not knowing anyone and next thing you know, you’re walking down the road and asking everyone how they’re going today. “One of my mates who I met at Kapooka like a year ago and haven’t seen since, I saw him last week and we clicked just like that! “I love that aspect where you make friends and family all over the country.” Trooper Campbell left school at age sixteen after completing year 10 and moved to Sydney for work. However, half-way through she changed her mind about becoming a flight attendant and enlisted in the Australian Army. “I love every day of my job, even when it’s raining! “And I love all the cool experiences I’ve had, like getting to drive big trucks and working with dangerous goods and the qualifications I get from

that. “Eventually I want to become an Aircrewman. “I think it’ll be an amazing job, especially when I got to see them assist in the floods earlier this year.” Trooper Campbell said she wants to show her gratitude for her time at the Army Recruit Training Centre - Kapooka and in the Indigenous Pre-recruitment Program. “I would also love to have the opportunity to go back to Kapooka and be an instructor. “I had really good instructors… I kind of want to just pay that back. “If I didn’t do the Indigenous Pre-recruitment Process, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. The Indigenous Prerecruitment Program incorporates Indigenous recruits from all three services (Army, Air Force and Navy) into a three week camp and prepares them for life at Kapooka where recruits are trained to become soldiers. “The Program shows Indigenous recruits the different standards of dress, how they have to iron them and look after them, their drills and you learn a little bit about each service. “It just gives you that extra step before going into actual basics. “It’s more in-depth [than Kapooka] because it’s a smaller group and you can do one-on-one. “It shows you the history of past Indigenous personnel in Defence and

how they’ve contributed and how the Army are doing things to incorporate cultural stuff. “Most people who are Indigenous who join Defence haven’t had that structure before. “This just gives you that extra little step so it’s not so much of a culture shock when you go into Kapooka. “It was definitely a confidence booster for me. “I’m really hoping I get the chance to go back and give back what they gave me. Originally from Bundaberg and a hospitality family, she spent eleven years in the industry, working in Bundaberg, Ipswich and Sydney. Her mum was previously a chef in the Army and Trooper Campbell said that she served as part of her inspiration to enlist. “I had a few family members in Defence, so I knew it was always an option for me. “I will be aiming to become a Sergeant later in my career because I plan on staying longer than my four years.” When she’s not working on the base, Trooper Campbell loves to cook! “I don’t go to the mess, which a lot of people find shocking. “It’s just, I like to cook and I prefer my own cooking because I can spice things up and do crazy stuff. “I cook my own lunch, breakfast, dinner, sweets… whatever I’m feeling I just cook it up.”
