Woolshed future still uncertain

The future of the ten Jondaryan Woolshed staff and countless volunteers remains uncertain after the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) last week approved a decision to wind up the Jondaryan Woolshed Pty Ltd and take over operations of the historic facility. Council will continue managing operations at the facility until it receives and considers the results of the Building and Safety Assessment Report which is expected to be presented to Council in late 2021. Finance and Business Strategy Committee Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said Council would work closely with staff and volunteers to ensure the transition runs smoothly. “Council is aware this is a complex transition process and wishes to assist the staff and volunteers of the Jondaryan Woolshed through this time,” Cr McDonald said. “Council and the Board will work together to ensure appropriate decisions are made in relation to existing staff, following consultation with them.” Cr McDonald said the Board, which currently consists of three people, proposed to step down and take the role of a strategic advisory group. “Council has agreed to this request and is pleased the current members of the Board want to continue being involved as the shared knowledge from this group will no doubt be valuable as we move forward,” he said. “This is the best

possible outcome for the Woolshed, its staff and volunteers and the Board while Council undertakes a building and safety assessment. “The building and safety assessment will also present us with an opportunity to look at the best operating model for this facility as we move forward. “There is a general agreement the existing business model may no longer be the best fit for this facility and as such, we will need to speak with the local community and potential business partners, to look at what could be a better fit.” Cr McDonald said the transition means the Woolshed won’t be taking more event bookings. “There are number of event bookings already

TO THE PAST

The return of ‘The Attic’ The original “Attic” which was conducted by the McConnels & Baden

Rush vacated the premises at 3 Cherry Street, Oakey by 1977, around the same

time that Baden Rush sold the present “Burrendong” property to Dr Eric Donaldson. In the same year, another business, also trading as “The Attic” opened in 108 Campbell Street (the old fruit shop), the owners being Joan Crighton and Lillian Staal (nee Crighton). They specialised in ladies’ and children’s wear, jewellery, materials and all sewing needs, McCalls patterns, macrame and Berlei undergarments. They were also a book exchange. During the period that they operated in Campbell Street, 3 Cherry Street was being used by the owner himself, Les Bourke, selling second-hand furniture as well as carrying out his auto electrician work in shop 1 of the complex.

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

In later years, part of the building was used by John Mercer, gas and electrical repairer and installer as well as John McLay, refrigerator and airconditioner service.

Old fashioned service meets modern edge at Ray White Rural Oakey

With their new premises officially opened at the corner of Campbell and McDonald Streets, Oakey residents Geoff and Julie Byers are now well established local business owners with Ray White Rural Oakey providing a friendly face and wide variety of professional and technologically savvy real estate services for Oakey district residents, from property management to rural, commercial, residential and clearing sales. Geoff and Julie said it has been eight months since the they opened the business, first from their kitchen table, then moving to a building on Middle Street before taking over their current location which was formerly owned by Oakey identity Dr EAF McDonald. They said the addition of the new signage put up on Friday signals the end of the long journey from an idea to reality. “To have the location in place and to put our big signs up has been great,” Geoff said. “We wanted the signs to be something that stood out and something that is

new and modern. Yes, the building is old but we want it to be fresh and alive,” Julie added. “We have also kept some of the old fashioned charm and features as well.” Born and bred Oakey resident Geoff said the local community has also backed the venture. “The locals have been very supportive of the business,” he said. “I’m born and bred in Oakey, so it helps that I have the local knowledge and background.” Geoff said he believes it is their customer service and old fashioned values alongside the local

It also helps that they are committed to the community on a personal level, through the Goombungee Show Society and sports clubs, as well as a professional level,” she said. BRIGHT FUTURE FOR OAKEY MARKET Geoff and Julie said the real estate market in Oakey is very positive with

potential buyers coming from across the country to look at local real estate. “Oakey is growing. It is still very affordable for people to come and buy,” Geoff said. “We are seeing a lot of out of towners and people from afar wanting to come to buy. “We’ve had people from Inverell, from Singleton,

Coffs Harbour, from north and west Queensland. “Now, we just need more listings. We’ve got buyers waiting, so we need more to offer them.” Anyone needing locallyfocused real estate services is invited to call into Ray White Rural Oakey’s new location or give them a call on 4670 9685.

It’s our goal and it’s what we are doing,” he said. Geoff said it has always been one of his long term goals to join the real estate industry and he took about six years to plan the venture to ensure he did it right. “It’s always something I have been passionate about. I like real estate and I always had,” he said. “We are in a good spot and with the development that is around the area, I think Oakey is just prime to continue to grow. We want to be part of it.” The Byers have employed a team of other well respected community members including property manager Tamara Mickleborough and Errol Luck who handles rural and residential sales. Julie said Tamara and Errol have been a big help in getting the business off the ground. “They’re both great and bring their own level of local knowledge and

Young judges, New local Agtech Hub connects paraders finals farming industry with innovation postponed

Agricultural Shows of Australia regrets to inform that the national finals for young judges, young paraders and rural ambassadors will be postponed, and will not be held at the Royal Queensland Show in August as planned.

Following a meeting of the working groups and organising committees of Agricultural Shows of Australia and the host body Queensland Ag Shows last week, the unanimous decision was made that the national finals would not be conducted in conjunction with the 2021 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka). Queensland Ag Shows confirmed that the Queensland State Young Judges and Paraders, Rural

Ambassador and Showgirl competitions will continue as normal at the Ekka. This announcement affects the state winners who were eligible as national competitors in the young judges competitions for poultry, alpacas, Merino sheep, Merino fleece, meat sheep breeds, dairy and beef cattle, paraders in dairy and beef cattle competitions and rural ambassadors. The joint committees will reconvene on 6 August.

Grant for cotton market diversification

The Australian Cotton Shippers Association (ACSA) and Cotton Australia (CA) have received a $692,456 grant from the Australian Government to develop and implement a strategy for market diversification.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said the grant would play an important role in coordinating a plan for the future of the cotton industry. “This grant will establish a long-term strategy for market diversification for the entire cotton industry,” he said. “This will explore as many options as possible to make Australian cotton a fibre of choice for textile

manufacturers. “It will look at markets with huge growth potential, like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam; it will also look at consumer education through digital platforms. “The more consumers, brands and retailers understand about the sustainability and quality of Australian cotton, the more they can make informed decisions when buying,” Mr Littleproud said.

He said Gillis’ is now not using methamphetamines which he become addicted to at just 16 years of age and is working to wean himself off cannabis. Magistrate O’Callaghan took into account Gillis’ commitment to changing his life choices and family circumstances when sentencing him to two months imprisonment suspended for nine months, a $250 fine for breaching probation and an additional six months of probation. She said if Gillis’ offends in the next nine months he will have to serve the prison term.

Bradley Gillis pleaded guilty to five bail breach offences ranging in dates from January 11 this year to June 27. He also admitted to being in possession of 27 grams of cannabis, a glass pipe used for the smoking of a dangerous drug and possessing a knife in a public place on January 27. He also pleaded guilty to an older charge of possessing a glass pipe used for the smoking of a dangerous drug on October 1, 2020. Magistrate K. O’Callaghan also added to the list one count of breaching probation which relates to Gillis’ pledge not to commit further offences while on probation for previous charges. However, drivers can hold their phone or a wallet with a phone in it when the car is stationary to: - produce a licence or other document as required by a police officer; - pay for goods and services (eg. at a drivethrough); or - enter a road-related area like a car park. They can also use a phone hands-free when it’s in a pocket of their clothing or in a pouch that

Although opened by Brideson’s in 1938, the final standing shed is a newer addition, built some time in the late 1960s to house the pigs up for sale. Oakey Men’s Shed president John Greenhalgh said the group was approached by Riverina to remove the structure. He said the iron roof and hardwood frame are still in very good condition considering their age. “There is no rust in the iron and the wood shows no sign of rotting,” he said. “It shows how well people made things in the old days.” Mr Greenhalgh thanked Riverina for letting the group use the resources. He said they hoped to either create new items or re-sell the pieces with all funds going to support their organisation. Secretary Graeme Garvis said he remembered the impact the yards had on Oakey community when they were operating. “You couldn’t get a park in town,” he said. “The place was full of people who had come to take part in the pig and calf

Service to country and community

In her day job Corporal Miranda Lucas is an instructor at the Rotary-wing Aircraft Maintenance School (RAMS) where she imparts her knowledge, and significant operational experience, to the future tradespeople of the Australian Army Aviation capability.

Outside of these obligations she also volunteers with the Rural Fire Service in a role she has enjoyed for the past three or so years. Prior to living in Oakey with her husband Michael, Miranda was posted to the Navy’s 808 Squadron in Nowra where she began serving her community as well as her nation as a volunteer firefighter with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. She commenced her training in May 2018 and by August was actively fighting fires on the South Coast. “I had just worked all day with Army and went straight home to get changed and go help with property protection,” Miranda said. “We spent the next 12 hours trying to keep the blaze at bay and managed to save a house from being burned down.” Despite being completely exhausted the feeling she got from helping was “incredibly rewarding”. In 2019/20 Miranda was again called upon to protect her community from the devastating bushfires,

working as a Fire Fighter at the Basin View Fire Brigade. “We were working to try and redirect the fire away from residential areas, so we were fighting right in its path,” she says. Even if, at times, it seemed a lost cause, Miranda and her husband Michael continued to fight until they were no longer required. “We spent weeks in smoke, helping people evacuate, back burning where we could and seeing first-hand the destruction,” she said. With that spirit of service at the forefront of her mind the first thing Miranda did when arriving in Oakey was apply to join the local Gowrie Little Plain Rural Fire Brigade – a role she loves as is it, “gets you out there with the families who need help.” When asked if she will ever stop, she says that, “there may be times when I need a break, but so far I’ve managed to still be involved despite surgery, deployments and moving.” “So I think I’ll find a way to give back some way or another.”

Continued from page 1 Oakey Show Society president Judy Byers highlighted the work of Di Marsh and her family who progressed the project from an idea to completion. She said Di was the driving force in the committee’s success with a grant application of over $214,000 from the Regional Agricultural Shows Development Program. “This grant has been the largest and most detailed application that our life member and grant writing expert Di Marsh had ever attempted on our behalf,” Mrs Byers said. “On behalf of the Oakey community, thank you Di for your hard work and passion.”

Cr McDonald said the pavilion is result of the combined efforts of the Oakey community and businesses. “It’s great to have a local contractor, local builders, local suppliers alongside local supporters and volunteers who put their time, energy and effort to make sure this project is successful,” he said. “This is quintessential of Oakey, people coming together to help each other out. Never in my wildest did I ever imagine such an honour,” she said. “The pavilion will be an enormous asset for our Society and has been a huge project for our small committee. “It has taught us many valuable lessons along the way including patience, persistence, bravery and that slow and steady wins the race.” Mrs Marsh thanked engineers Michael Matthewson and Jason Edge who provided advice throughout the process. She also commended the work of local business Coops Construction who built the structure in just four months despite periods of
