The mine faces harsh criticism from an opponent, namely the Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA), which says the project will contaminate groundwater and that drilling will impact nearby dairy farms and blacken filters. However, Mr Bishop denies this criticism and said it’s not well understood how the mine sources its water.

“We don’t actually take any water from the local area, we pay a significant amount of money to take recycled water from the Toowoomba Council.

“I refute anybody who says we have a negative impact on groundwater.

New Hope Group CEO Robert Bishop said it was excellent news to finish the week.“It’s been a long eight months of dealing with the government departments since the third Land Court hearing, which was held at the end of last he said. “We’re not quite there yet, we still need the associated water information needed for the associated water licence has been with Minister Butcher’s department for some years now and we’re hoping the government supports its existing processes like Minister Stewart’s department did and a quick decision is made.”

“It’s important to understand Acland has been mining for twenty years with no groundwater issues and we’ve had more than a handful of technical experts support that it has no impact.

“We’ve actually got an award-winning dairy farm which operates next door to the“Itmine.has no issues obviously as it’s award-winning, and again we’ve had no issues with groundwater for local farmers or the local community.” -Continued on page 11.

“We want to make sure employers have access to the skilled workforce they need.”Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said Queenslanders aged under 25 could continue to enrol in 26 free TAFE programs and 139 free apprenticeships programs up to 30 June 2023 and pay no course fees.“Since August 2018, 56,000 Queenslanders have undertaken programs in sectors including health, community services, hospitality, building and construction and education support with TAFE Queensland and other providers delivering their training free of charge,” Ms Farmer said. “Our significant investment is already delivering, including our free TAFE initiative, with an increase of 85.5% in new apprenticeships and trainee commencement over the last two financial years, which is critical with the current labour shortages. “With 83.9 percent of TAFE graduates going on to employment or further study after completing their training it’s further proof of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to delivering good jobs, better services and a great lifestyle for Queenslanders.”Accordingto the State Government, some of the top courses undertaken includes education, health, childcare, carpentry, hairdressing, engineering, community services and electrical and mechanical trades. For more information about free TAFE and free apprenticeships for under 25s, visit www.qld.gov.au/ skillspower/

The State Government has extended its free TAFE and apprenticeships for under 25s program to upskill Queenslanders and combat the labour shortage.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the initiative, which has already helped 56,000 Queenslanders get the skills and training employers value, was due to end in September but will be extended until June 2023.“Queensland’s unemployment rate is at 3.8% and we know that means employers need workers to fill the good jobs that are still there,”she said. “For many people, that may mean upgrading skills and training which is why free TAFE is so important.

This year is the 80th anniversary of the Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA), which, in its initial stages, was only formed as the Women’s Land Army in December 1941 after the Japanese entered World War II.

Dorothy dressed in her AWLA uniform. didn’t get the dress uniform. Dorothy Wilson (later Weise and our Mother) joined the AWLA in Victoria as a full time member after she turned 21 and remained working among flax at Lake Bolac for the duration of the War, which ended on August 15, 1945. The production of flax was one of the most important products during theItwar.was used for all sorts of clothing and equipment from coats to parachute harnesses, ropes and tarpaulins and even to cover gliders used to transport troops.Today, August 31, 2022 would have been our Mum’s 99thShebirthday.always had the desire to reach 100 yearsold, but fate never intended it so as she was dealt a cruel blow on October 15, 2007 when she suffered a lifechanging stroke which left her partially paralysed. From that day forth, she never spoke another word for the next long and agonizing 3 years and 8 months until she passed away on June 9, 2011 in her 87th year. R U OK? Day

Spend this Thursday morning (1st September) at the Oakey Information Centre playing trivia. Starting at 10am and going for roughly one hour, drink some tea and coffee provided by the lovely volunteers at the Information Centre as you’re put to the test! You can come in a group or by yourself, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet some friendly faces.

Construction is officially underway on the Queensland section of Inland Rail, with Charlton-based company Interlink SQ beginning its contract to relocate various utilities last week.

Study Toowoomba is a membership-based body for international education and training.. Cr Sommerfield has represented the Council on the Study Toowoomba Management Committee since 2020 and has held a previous role in the education sector. “I sincerely thank Michele for her contribution to Study Toowoomba prior to, and during her tenure as Chair,” she said.

Cr Sommerfield new chair of Study Toowoomba

Toowoomba Regional Councillor Nancy Sommerfield was recently named the new Chair of Study Toowoomba, replacing TAFE Queensland Southwest Corporate Solutions Director Michele Berkhout in the role.

“Now that the international borders are open again it enables great opportunities, ripe for harvesting.“Ilook forward to working closely with the other Committee members to drive improved outcomes in this space.”

The Committee will focus on three strategic pillars – promoting the Toowoomba region to future international students through destination marketing, ensuring the international student experience in Toowoomba exceeds expectations and increasing industry and community engagement with international students. It is governed by a volunteer Management Committee, made up of representatives from UniSQ, TAFE Queensland, Downlands College, Concordia Lutheran College and TRC. Cr Nancy Sommerfield.

Make sure to come on down to J.L.C Real Estate in Oakey next Thursday 8th September to celebrate R U Ok? Day. R U OK? Day is our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life.

Researchers from Australia’s National Science Agency (CSIRO) are piloting the release of a fungus from Columbia to help landholders tackle the weed. Flaxleaf fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) is a fastspreading weed from South America that damages cropping and grazing areas across Australia and impacts the livelihoods of many primary producers. CSIRO weed ecologist Dr Ben Gooden said flaxleaf fleabane was one of the most difficult-to-control weeds in grain cropping systems.“Itis estimated to affect nearly three million hectares of land in Australia and cause grain crop revenue losses of more than $43 million each year,” he said. “As flaxleaf fleabane has developed resistance to some herbicides, we hope that the biocontrol agent will be effective in reducing its populations across the country.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said iron deficiency affects one third of the world’s population, with those most at risk being infants, children and teenagers, who are growing rapidly, and pregnant women, who need iron for increased blood levels and to build their baby’s iron stores.

Last week, the critical contribution of Australian beef as a nutritional powerhouse fuelling sustainable diets and the wellbeing of communities across the world was in focus during World Iron Awareness Week.

or

In Australia, the WHO estimates that anaemia caused by iron deficiency (IDA) affects eight per cent of pre-school children, twelve per cent of pregnant women and fifteen per cent of women of reproductive age.Because the body can’t make iron on its own, it gets it from the food we eat. Popular sources of iron include iron-fortified breakfast cereals, poultry, fish, spinach, tofu and red meat.Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said Australian beef provides twelve essential nutrients recommended for good health, with an average 150 gram serving (raw weight) of lean red meat providing an excellent source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12. It also delivers more iron than other animal proteins such as chicken or fish. MLA explains how there are three simple ways to promote sustainable eating, while continuing to enjoy the taste and nutritional benefits of Australian beef: - Maintaining a healthy weight by eating all foods in recommended amounts - Improving diet quality by eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods to promote health and wellbeing-Reducing household food waste by purchasing, cooking and serving only what you need. universities, industry, and investors.Theprogram provides a pathway for industry to pilot and test solutions that can help them lower their carbon industryConceptdeploymentguidancereceivewillSelectedemissions.companieshaveachancetograntfundingandforsuccessfulofProof-of-projectswithanpartner.Applyatthislink https:// lowcarbonqld.com/program before September 11, 2022. Flaxleaf fleabane grows up to one metre and is a prolific seed producer. Each plant can produce over 100,000 seeds and these can disperse long distances with the help of wind, water, animals, and vehicles, explaining its rapid spread not just within local districts but into southern and western cropping and grazing regions in recent times. The Grains and Research Development Corporation (GRDC) was one of the supporting organisations for the GRDCresearch.Manager Weeds Dr Jason Emms said grain growers had been battling flaxleaf fleabane for many years as the weed competes for soil water across multiple stages of the crop cycle, which directly impacts production. “A biocontrol agent for this problematic weed is very exciting as it may help to reduce overall populations when integrated with existing weed management strategies,” he said. This research is generated from the project ‘Underpinning agricultural productivity and biosecurity by weed biological control’ and is supported by AgriFutures Australia, through funding from the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as part of its Rural R&D for Profit program and co-investment from CSIRO, GRDC and NSW Biocontrol Taskforce. Landholders wishing to Flaxleaf fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) Puccinia cnici-oleracei attacking a weed. participate in the biocontrol release program should register their interest with theAsCSIRO.release sites are strategically selected across the weed’s range, CSIRO will provide the rust fungus and clear instructions to land managers wishing to introduce the rust fungus to areas with high flaxleaf fleabane infestations. Landholders will be asked to monitor the fungus and how it establishes and will report back to CSIRO on the impact it has on flaxleaf fleabane. If you would like to register your interest in the biocontrol release program, email fleabanebiocontrol@ csiro.au

This afternoon, the Queensland Farmers Federation (QFF) is hosting an online Zoom session addressing weather risks, how to interpret BoM data and how parametric insurance may be able to help prepare your farm business for managing severe weather conditions.

Landholders now have a new biocontrol tool to help fight one of Australia’s most challenging agricultural weeds, flaxleaf fleabane. where scientists studied it extensively to determine if it would be safe to introduce to Australia as a biocontrol agent. “Our research found the fungus can only infect flaxleaf fleabane, while all non-target plant species tested were resistant to it. “Based on this research, the fungus is deemed to be safe and has been approved by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for introduction to Australia.”

He said there will be additional infrastructure built to support the soon-tobe upgraded railway line to Brisbane.Mayor Antonio described the approval as welcome news and stated that the Oakey community deserves a decision.“Iampleased to see the uncertainty around the future of the project is almost over,” he “Councilsaid.has great faith in the future of Oakey and is confident that the proposed resumption of New Hope Group’s operations will underpin an even brighter future for the wider Oakey community.”However, Oakey Coal Action Alliance’s Paul King said the group will continue the fight to stop the mine from“Thisreopening.isasdisturbing as it is disappointing,” he said, “We will not give up - we cannot give up - and we will prevail. We must. “This is not the end, just the end of the beginning of this fight.” Mr Weir said he was concerned with the potential for another legal battle to start.“We know it’s coming, the opponents have said they will lodge appeals and keep this tied up in court for as long as they can,” he said.“They don’t need to win, all they need to do is tie it up in court as the premier said she will not approve this until all court action is finalised. “This will breath life into this community, who so desperately needs it. “If this is not followed through, this is very simply a cruel hoax on the people of Oakey.“This has been tied up in court, land court, judicial reviews, on legal technicalities that have been dismissed and we are back to where we are on the same conditions that were there years ago, so this is a legal warfare.“Sonow we could have the EDO (Environmental Defenders Office), who is funded by the state government, running a legal battle against the state government - that’s where weMrstand.”Bishop agrees that the biggest obstacle for the mine is getting caught up in legal cases, not following environmental requirements. “I don’t think the environmental aspect has been the thorn in our side, I think there is an ideological minority group which have opposed us,” he said. “We live in a democratic society and that’s fine, but I think there’s got to be a point at which the department’s need to move on and make a decision.“Ithink from our perspective, environmentally we are a very responsible operator.
