Wyreema comes together
Over 400 people made their way to Bracknell Lodge in Wyreema for the Bush Chooks N Roosters Campfire Cook Off, raising $15,000 for Tony’s Community Kitchen. Rebecca Knudsen, owner of Bracknell Lodge, said the event was more than what she had hoped for. “Our community and supporters from all over were absolutely incredible, the day was extremely fun and a genuine sense of camaraderie could be felt during the entire event,” Mrs Knudsen said. “I would like to say a massive heartfelt thank you to all who supported us in our efforts to raise much needed funds for emergency accommodation for homeless families in our region. “We as a community can achieve so much together and this is the first step in our mission of making serious change for those in need.” The Campfire Cook Off competition saw teams that came from far and wide compete for the $1,000 prizemoney. Each team required samples for a minimum of 100 guests consisting of a meat, vegetarian side, and a bread or damper. The winners were Jodi and Kerry Harrold of the Leigh Home Mavericks team who had travelled all the way from Emerald. The Leigh Home Mavericks were not going to leave anything to chance, arriving the day before with absolutely everything they might need including their own sheets of corrugated iron for wind breaks. The couple kindly donated the prizemoney back to Tony’s Community Kitchen. They also won the competition for the best one dish of any choice event for their chicken katsu, which was judged by Kat from Foodie Shots and Carmel Tulloch. The child and adult competition, popular with the kids and supporters, was won by David and Charlotte Bagnall. Mrs Knudsen said there is not enough words to say how grateful she is to all those who have supported Bracknell Lodge. “I look forward to sharing our venue with the community
for more charity events in the future,” Mrs Knudsen said. “Wyreema and surrounds is an amazing community and they will always have our heart and our support.” In addition to the cook off, guests had a lot to see and do including live music, market stalls and food vans. After the success of the Bush Chooks N Roosters Campfire Cook Off, Ms Knudsen said they plan to make it an annual event to be held on the same weekend each year, the last of August. In the meantime, Bracknell Lodge will be expanding its repertoire to other kinds of events, with an Op Shop Ball to be held on 11 December, with Baker Boys Band set to perform. To keep up to date with events at Bracknell Lodge, visit the ‘Bush Chooks N Roosters’ Facebook page. More photos on page 8

You might think bushfire management just involves hazard reduction burns in our parks, bushland and trails, but we can reduce hazards in lots of different ways. In 2021, we’ve undertaken the following bushfire mitigation activities: • development of fire trails in Millmerran and Crows Nest areas • upgrade of fire trails in Jubilee and McKnight Parks • replacement of infrastructure at Cressbrook and Perseverance Dams • facilitating hazard reduction burns on our land in Millmerran and Crows Nest • manual hazard reduction (slashing and vegetation management) and • community bushfire awareness activities in Toowoomba and Millmerran. 2021 LEYBURN SPRINTS
750HP Nascar to hit the track Supercar ace Brodie Kostecki will bring to Leyburn the 750-horsepower 59# STP Ford Fusion Australian star Marcos Ambrose drove to an historic victory in NASCAR’s elite Nationwide series at Watkins Glen International Raceway, New York, in 2008. Kostecki is not shy about what he plans to do in the sedan. “They’re gonna feel the ground shake when this thing lights up,” he said. “The STP NASCAR will be awesome to see and hear at Leyburn, even though it’s built for running on far bigger and faster tracks in America.” He’ll do two demonstration runs on the second day of the weekend Sprints, Sunday 12 September, and will be on hand to show fans around the car when it is on display. Kostecki is the only person in Australia owner Brett “Crusher” Murray has entrusted to drive the car. Murray said he is excited that the fans at Leyburn will be the first in Australia to see the Fusion run in public. “It’s truly an awesome thing to drive and the noise is earth-shattering. While there is an amazing entry list for this year’s Leyburn event, I don’t think there will be anything louder or tougher than the #59 Fusion.” It will be a highlight of a packed weekend of competition and motoring entertainment at the community-run Sprints, to be held on the weekend of 11-12 September.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL
BOOK WEEK Well it’s that time of year again! Family members have been building up to this very day.
Last week was BOOKWEEK! Students at Wyreema made a massive effort with their costumes this year. We had students ranging from the ever popular Harry Potter to the classic Bruce Bogtrotter, from the famous book ‘Matilda’. We were so very lucky to have our kindy friends from Wyreema Early Education join us. They were adorable. Even the staff jumped on board this year going with the theme of the ‘Little Miss’ characters. Staff and students are already busy planning for another great book week next year. Get ready Mum’s and Dad’s!

Wattles lose first final

The Wattles Warriors are down but not out in the 2021 Toowoomba Rugby League finals series after a 40-16 loss to Valleys Roosters at home in front of a huge Clifton crowd. The rampaging Roosters had the better of the finish to add another win to their six game undefeated run. Valleys are current premiers and a win over Goondiwindi on Sunday will see them ease into the 2021 Grand Final as they lift a gear chasing ‘three from three’ premierships. Wattles, without injured player/coach Travis Burns, enjoyed the bulk of possession in the first stanza but failed to convert it into points to be trailing on the scoreboard 4-12 at half time. Lee Group Electrical player of the round Dwayne Duncan intercepted in the fifth minute to run 70 metres before handing the ball to Valley’s winger Alex Hinch to score to have the visitors ahead 6–0. Wattles continued their good field position after the try and eventually, a Ryan Stevens pinpoint kick for his winger Jake Meddleton found the mark to get Wattles on the board 4-6. Valleys were rarely in Wattles half in the first forty minutes, but when they were, Valleys made them pay. Sam Cocker broke through some feeble defence to get the score to 4-12 at half time. The Warriors started the better in the second half, Ryan Stevens scoring after five minutes. He chased a kick in Valleys dead ball area and scored with inches to spare. Only a couple of minutes later, one of Wattles’ best, Matt Duggan scooted up the middle to find his co-captains, Dale Perkins and Ryan Duggan who combined to get the Warriors in front for the first time in the match 16-12. Once Valleys got the ball and held onto it for consecutive sets of six, they started to get on a roll. They scored the next five tries to confirm their place against Goondiwindi in next weekend’s Major Semi-Final. Wattles’ defence let them down in the second half. Injuries on the bench did not help, being a game that required all 17 players to compete for 80 minutes. Valleys 40 defeated Wattles 16 (Jake Meddleton, Ryan Stevens, Ryan Duggan tries Matt Duggan 2 goals) RESERVE GRADE In a tough semi-final rivals Warwick and Wattles gave the crowd a wonderful contest at Kuhls Road Reserve at Highfields on Saturday. Early in the match, the scores were locked at six-all, that score holding for most of the match until two late tries by Wattles sealed the win. Warwick did snatch the lead 8-6 after a Jeremy Jerome penalty in the second half. Wattles’ centre Brenden Wilson’s try near full time summed up the result, Wilson was in excellent form across the match. Wattles 16 (Darby Peardon, Mitch Bourke, Brenden Wilson tries Lachlan Henry, Thomas Morris goals) defeated Warwick 8. TRL Minor Semi-Finals – Saturday, 4th September at Platz Oval, Clifton: Under 18 Valleys vs. Warwick 2.15pm; Open Women Newtown vs. Valleys 3.45pm; Reserve Grade Highfields vs. Wattles 5pm; A Grade Wattles vs. Highfields 6.30pm - Glyn Rees
