New mural embodies Bunker’s Hill

At Bunker’s Hill State School, a past student has combined his talents with current students to create a big, bold and colourful mural that encapsulates all the elements of life at the school.

Earlier this year during the Art Show, students were given the opportunity to help paint the mural in the multipurpose building.

The mural was designed

by Connor Byrd who was a former student of Bunker’s Hill and has just graduated Year 12 at Harristown State High School.

It was created by Connor to commemorate all the special memories that he held from being a student at Bunker’s Hill.

The bright, vibrant mural showcases Connor’s amazing artistic talents and Bunker’s Hill School is appreciative of his talent and generosity as he donated his spare time and efforts in creating this amazing mural.

Cambooya Landcare Committee re-elected

In the absence of other nominees, the existing Committee of Cambooya Landcare Association Inc was elected to continue at the Annual General Meeting held at Felton Hall.

The committee consists of Kate Reardon-Smith as Chair, Ian Whan as Vice Chair, Glenn Knight as Secretary and Hugh Reardon-Smith as Treasurer.

The proceedings started with Dr Adam Frew from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) giving a fascinating presentation about the relationship between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, their affect on plant growth and defence against insect attack.

After a light supper, the Chair reported on Cambooya Landcare’s activities.

Mrs Reardon-Smith thanked the other members of the executive and all members of Cambooya Landcare Association for their support and spoke about what the group has been up to in the last year.

“Our main funded activities this year have been two federal government Communities Environment Program projects,” Mrs Reardon-Smith said.

“The first of these enabled us to fence and revegetate areas USQ’s Dr Adam Frew presenting at the Cambooya within the property boundary on four properties adjacent to Landcare AGM. the roadside reserve on or linking to the Toowoomba-Karara Rd (Cambooya-Felton section).

“The other funded similar works along drainage lines

on three properties in Emu and Sandy Creek catchments to

enable management and maintenance of groundcover during

drought to protect areas from erosion.

“These projects are almost complete, and we thank those

involved for their enthusiasm and efforts in putting up fences,

planting trees and sending through pictures of their finished

works.

“I’d also especially like to thank Lisa Hanlon and Felton

Produce for managing the orders for fencing gear and the

Peacehaven Nursery at Highfields for accessing and providing

us with over 650 seedlings of species native to our area for the

projects.”

Council ‘confident’ about current housing supply

At a recent briefing, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) told the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce and development industry figures that the region remains well placed to supply new housing lots for at least the next five to 10 years.

TRC Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said attendees were updated on information that included an overview of the South East Queensland Regional Plan, (covering the Toowoomba urban area), and associated growth monitoring data from Department of Treasury statisticians and TRC planners.

“Council is confident there is no imminent shortage of zoned land for residential development,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.

“Our primary focus centres around work to establish a Growth Plan to overcome challenges for our growing region and delivering on opportunities, especially around major jobcreating projects.

“There are currently 13 separate housing estates that have additional stages being completed with some offering blocks of land for sale ‘off-the-plan’’.”

Grants available for agritourism

New grants are now available to assist farmers establish or expand their operations into agritourism and share where Queensland’s high-quality food, fibre and foliage comes from and how it is produced.

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

The Friday night Christmas function went off very well with a very good crowd despite the threat of rain which held off long enough for all to enjoy. Santa arrived on time with some very excited children receiving a gift. The barbecue with sausages and beef patty burgers with salad were great as were the profiteroles and ice cream. This week it will be John’s beef and spinach cottage pie, made to an old family recipe. Meal costs will be $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12. The face painter and balloon twister showed off their skills with many children disguised as unique characters also carrying around some great balloon art. Multi-draw raffle winners were Rachel Walker, Michael O’Neill, Wayne Streeter, Gemma Smith and Judy. The $100 note raffle was won by club stalwart Mick O’Neill. The members’ draw this week, worth $50, was won by member number 24 Joyclyn Mauger who was there, so took home the prize. This week the members’ draw will kick off at $20. There were a number of children playing tennis on the night as well and the courts will be open and free to use as always this week.

THE PERFECT STORM Dear Editor, Over the last few years there has been industry concern around the availability of development land within Toowoomba.

As of mid November there were 110 lots on the market within Toowoomba.

With around 50 lots per months being sold it won’t be long before the current supply comes to an end.

Coming into early 2022 lots currently being developed have been pre-sold.

Westbrook completely sold out and no more areas are available for development.

Many other suburbs are facing the same situation.

There are some development applications in for further areas of Toowoomba but these will take some time for approval process, development conditions, tendering, construction, and final approvals to be completed.

There will be a shortage of land being developed in Toowoomba for several months in 2022.

This shortage may affect our construction industry, our economic position, and add further pressure to our ever growing accommodation crisis.

The housing crisis may get worse... Much worse... Before it’s gets better.

The challenge is for local, state, and federal government’s to work together to fast track regional solutions.

MT KENT OBSERVATORY VISIT Do you know what an exoplanet is?

Students from Year 4 and 5 at Cambooya State School do after a recent visit to Mt. Kent Observatory.

The students visited the local observatory which is Queensland’s only professional astronomical research facility.

It is a state-of-the-art facility which USQ researchers and students are using for ongoing planet discovery work. USQ uses this site to support NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) project and to date it has discovered more than 100 exoplanets.

The students spent time with two members of the USQ team to learn about what was located at the site and how these facilities are used.

The students were able to stand inside a dome and observe how a telescope works and moves in the dome.

Both members of the team talked through the TESS project and how it is being carried out in partnership with NASA. The belief is that every star you can see in the sky likely has at least one planet.

Greenmount Anzac Day Committee

A meeting was held last week to discuss preparations for Greenmount’s Anzac Day ceremony in 2022.

Toowoomba Regional Council Community Development Officer Sarah Rossiter wished to thank all community members that attended the committee meeting.

There were representatives present from Greenmount Returned Soldiers’ Memorial Hall and Greenmount State School as well as local residents.

The committee is looking for more people to become involved with organising the event.

The next meeting will be held on Monday 31 January at 6pm at the Greenmount Hall and all are welcome.

Emu Creek State School

RUNAWAY BAY SCHOOL CAMP The 3-6 class held its annual school camp at Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre.

Our students worked with camp instructor Zoe in a variety of team bonding activities to enhance their communication skills and team work.

A camp favourite is always stand up paddle boarding with all of our students rising to the challenge and standing on the board to paddle down the river.

Students also enjoyed an obstacle course, low ropes course, beach games, archery, indigenous games, initiative games, photo scavenger hunt, pool games, night time activities and beautiful nutritious food.

Emu Creek is a great place to grow!

SPORTING SCHOOLS Over the past 7 weeks, Touch and Rugby League local legends Jada Ferguson and Shenae Ciesiolka have been delivering the Sporting Schools Touch program to our Year 4 / 5 and Year 6 class.

Emu Creek kids learn about Carers

Last Friday, students from Emu Creek State School were provided with an opportunity to learn about the role of Carers.

The opportunity was facilitated through a visit by Tammy Conway and Dylan Haaijer from Wellways Carer Gateway who taught the school community about the supports available for Carers.

A Carer is someone who provides assistance to a friend, neighbour or family member with day-to-day activities like administering medicine, grocery shopping or meal preparation.

Carers are an integral part of Australia’s health system providing an estimated 2.2 billion hours of care in 2021.

Carer Gateway, the new federally funded support service for Carers was launched across the region Tammy Conway and Dylan Haaijer from Wellways with Emu Creek students. earlier this year.

Carer Gateway gives Carers access to a range of free local services and supports designed by Carers, for Carers to help them in their caring role.

Wellways Australia has been entrusted with delivering these services in the local community.

Wellways has been working with Carers for the past 40 years and has long recognised that Carers require support in their own right.

Do you or someone you know provide support for a loved one? This person may be a Carer.

The challenge is that most people do not see themselves as a ‘Carer.’

Ms Conway said Wellways has a wonderful team of staff who are here to support and help, working towards a bright future where everyone has the support they deserve.
