Qantas takes flight training a step further
Australia’s international flag carrier, Qantas has taken another significant step forward to take pilot training beyond its Training Academy at the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport. Queensland is now home to five of Qantas’ state of the art flight simulators. Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick joined Qantas CEO Alan Joyce to open the new Qantas Flight Training Centre at Brisbane Airport. Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the airline has a proud history of aviation training, opening its first ever flying school in a tin hangar at Eagle Farm in 1927. “Aviation has advanced significantly since those days and so too has pilot training,” Mr Joyce said. “We are pleased this state-of-the-art facility in Brisbane will mean a pilot can start their career at the Toowoomba Pilot Training Academy, complete their training at the Brisbane simulator centre and then embark on a Qantas Group career flying from their Queensland home base to everywhere from Longreach to Los Angeles.” The Treasurer said the opening of the new facility was another demonstration of Queensland’s growing aviation Young pilots are undergoing their first training at the sector that is attracting jobs and investment from interstate Qantas Pilot Training Academy at Toowoomba Wellcamp and overseas into Queensland. Airport before they move on to the simulators which have “The Q in Qantas proudly stands for Queensland, as it has just opened on the Brisbane airport precinct. for more than 100 years since the company was founded in Winton in 1920,” Mr Dick said. “The industry has been impacted severely over the last couple of years by COVID-19, but as we unite and recover, it’s technology and facilities like this which will play a critical role in our economic recovery. “Our partnership with Qantas to deliver their new Flight Training Centre brings extra aviation training capability to Queensland and creates new employment opportunities for training pilots and simulator technicians, including 18 new direct operational jobs.” “This suite of flight training simulators reinforces Queensland’s pre-eminence as a destination of choice for the aerospace and aviation support industries “In a state as vast as Queensland, with our proximity to Asia and the Pacific, aviation industries are a natural fit. Our government is determined to make the most of our competitive advantages when it comes to attracting aerospace companies and aerospace jobs, right across Queensland. “These simulators mean Queensland-based flight crew don’t have to leave the state to complete their ongoing training. “The Q400 simulators will train pilots who help fly vital regional Queensland routes and the 767 freight aircraft simulator is the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere. “The 787 and 737 simulators will also be in demand for pilots who will come from Australia and across the AsiaPacific region. “Their presence here will mean more pilots visiting Queensland, which means more business for accommodation and hospitality businesses. The centre has capacity to train up to 900 pilots each year.”

Great recognition for former Cambooya Shire public servant Continued from page 1 Tony McDonald would personally respond to midnight calls of overflowing pipes or cattle on the road, frequently attend traffic accidents or flooded roads, plant flowers and trees at the Greenmount Park and build play equipment at Cambooya Park. For many years he helped organise the Anzac Day service at Greenmount by closing roads and putting out chairs. He would often take councillors on bus tours of the region, explaining current works and future plans. Current Toowoomba Region Councillor and former Mayor of Cambooya Shire, Carol Taylor fondly remembered these trips. Mr McDonald also would often just hold public forums and community consultations ensuring all stakeholders were appraised of important decisions. Outside his work, Mr McDonald also coached junior soccer and cricket team, led church youth groups, and served with distinction for many years as president of the P&Cs for both Rangeville State School (1987-1994) and Centenary Heights State School (1994-1999, 2009-2013). He also has been a Justice of the Peace since 1988, Treasurer of Gipps Street Church of Christ since 1989 and was a member of Cambooya Queensland State Emergency Service from the 1970s to 1990s. After leaving Toowoomba Regional Council, he worked for Harrison Infrastructure Group, Lockyer Valley Regional

Cattle and lamb slaughter rates lift
Despite reports to the contrary, there have been some strong processor numbers to start 2022. While lamb and cattle slaughter numbers are below 2020 and 2021 levels so far this year, circumstances are improving. Changes to the national definition of a close contact and isolation rules for abattoir workers have seen the weekly kill numbers improve this week. Cattle slaughter improved 50 per cent this week to 62,000 head while lamb slaughter rose by 100,000 head this week to 319,000 head. These numbers are encouraging, although cattle slaughter is down 28 per cent and lamb slaughter down 29 per cent from the same week last year. Looking at specific states and species provides a slightly more nuanced picture of the situation: - In Western Australia they are processing 46,264 head of lambs, above 2020 levels and only slightly below 2021 levels; - Weekly lamb slaughter in New South Wales is 100,886, above the 98,000 head recorded in 2020 when the state was still in drought; - In Tasmania, the 7,434 head of lambs processed is above the weekly slaughter of both 2020 and 2021.

Fall armyworm active in the local region
The spread of Fall armyworm across Queensland’s agricultural regions is continuing and the local area is not escaping the pest. The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has received reports of Fall armyworm on the eastern Darling Downs, affecting mainly sorghum and maize crops, since 2020. A DAF spokesperson said during the current 2021-22 spring and summer, Fall armyworm (FAW) activity on the eastern Downs has increased in intensity as the season has progressed. “Although many early maize crops had very low or no FAW infestation, most crops planted in December 2021 and January 2022 have an infestation,” the spokesperson told On Our Selection News. The Department is recommending that producers should monitor crops for signs of damage leading to defoliation of the crop, particularly during crop emergence and establishment. “Crop loss is most likely if seedlings are chewed off at the base by larvae that have not been detected,” the spokesperson said. “The latest advice about the impacts and management of fall armyworm on key crops can be found on online at www.business.qld.gov.au/industries/farms-fishing-forestry/ agriculture/crop-growing/fall-armyworm” An overview of Fall armyworm activity across the state of Queensland along with information which will assist crop producers with identifying Fall armyworm caterpillars and crop damage can be found on online by going to thebeatsheet.com.au

Although the threat of COVID-19 nearly saw the Cambooya Australia Day celebrations postponed or held behind closed doors, quick decision making by the committee saw the event go ahead with changes made to reduce risk. The event was streamlined into an hour-long affair that was prompt and well organised, with those talking including the Master of Ceremonies Graeme Lotz, Cr Carol Taylor and Ambassador Brendan Bernier. There was live music performed by Cambooya duo Ronnie and Johnny, a coffee van and the Lions Club handed out cakes. Understandably, crowd numbers were well down on previous years as older people and those at risk opted to stay at home for their own safety and the weather was far from ideal. Wyreema Community Hall and Felton Hall were the only nominations in their categories. The other nominees for Citizen of the Year were Rebecca Knudsen, Carol and Shannon Priebbenow and Tony Anderson.
